COMMENTATOR: The player not allowed in the front court but is everywhere

:00:00.:00:18.

normally, he is ubiquitous. That is a key position libero. Italy had a

:00:19.:00:35.

win in straight sets of this event in the London competition four years

:00:36.:00:41.

ago, battering the United States and played the Brazilians in the semi

:00:42.:00:45.

and were beaten in that. They went on to win the bronze medal match

:00:46.:00:47.

against Bulgaria. The Iranians get us under way in the

:00:48.:00:59.

quarterfinal match in Rio. A semifinal place is on offer. Another

:01:00.:01:17.

good serve. Always looks severe bomber but this man is a demon from

:01:18.:01:29.

the baseline. The Italians have a chance to attack. We will see a lot

:01:30.:01:34.

more of that from the player with Russian roots, very much wearing the

:01:35.:01:40.

colours of Italy now. He is a passionate character. He is an

:01:41.:01:45.

aggressive character, and they need that.

:01:46.:02:07.

That adds to his tally, 28 spike of the competition.

:02:08.:02:25.

And the opportunities spilled out of the hands. They kept it going. Good,

:02:26.:02:32.

strong rally early on, and into the net. Italy score. Zaytsev read that.

:02:33.:02:38.

It was a desperate move in a sense, because he was the only one on that

:02:39.:02:42.

side of the net and had to move to his right. And the chance goes for

:02:43.:02:56.

Iran. Ebadipour comes to the back, and that is him. What a piece of

:02:57.:02:58.

receiving. Iran have the serve. That is critical, to maintain the

:02:59.:03:18.

service of vantage. It was a good score, all about that split-second

:03:19.:03:21.

decision-making. Iran have kept it going. Finally, the finish.

:03:22.:03:33.

Brilliant defence from Iran. But not for long.

:03:34.:04:00.

Birarelli has missed the game and a bit, so we will let him off. He

:04:01.:04:05.

missed the game against Mexico and suck out the game. Actually, he was

:04:06.:04:09.

ready to go, but never came on against Canada.

:04:10.:04:21.

That is a formidable spiking technique Zaytsev has. Great reach

:04:22.:04:27.

and break power in the follow-through. When he came on

:04:28.:04:37.

against Canada in the last match, it was a different game altogether.

:04:38.:04:46.

There is something of the streetfighter about Zaytsev. Lovely

:04:47.:04:59.

celebration. In a sense, a dream team. They feel, having been the top

:05:00.:05:04.

team in their group, they want to build this now. That is the blocking

:05:05.:05:13.

machine. Zaytsev, and a thumping serve. Too much on it. That is

:05:14.:05:17.

always the danger when you go for that power serve rather than the

:05:18.:05:21.

floater. You have got to judge it to perfection. Even players the quality

:05:22.:05:28.

of Zaytsev get it wrong. Even stevens early on here. Cheap point

:05:29.:05:36.

given up straightaway. Iran offering the serve back to Italy.

:05:37.:05:54.

A series of missed cues here by Italy.

:05:55.:06:09.

The captain is so precise, never hurried. Juantorena knew exactly

:06:10.:06:20.

where that was going. Cross court, in the corner. No way anyone was

:06:21.:06:30.

going to get near that. Monday but perfectly, Juantorena. If you

:06:31.:06:33.

recognise the name, it is not surprising. His uncle was a famous

:06:34.:06:40.

Cuban. Iran response right away. That is a costly rotation. He may

:06:41.:07:01.

kiss the ball, but he has kissed the point goodbye. Service faults being

:07:02.:07:09.

traded in this opening set, getting off to the best possible start is so

:07:10.:07:20.

important. Straight into the net again. In terms of it going over,

:07:21.:07:26.

not even close. This is cheap from Italy. It goes back to the old word

:07:27.:07:36.

that is familiar in volleyball, momentum. Keep it going. Nothing

:07:37.:07:46.

builds confidence like winning. Italy are into the lead once more.

:07:47.:07:59.

But no opportunity to build daylight between themselves and the Iran for

:08:00.:08:02.

the heavily fancied Italians. Receive, set, Spike. All done so

:08:03.:08:14.

quickly. Marouf is the smallest man on the

:08:15.:08:55.

court. The Italian serving is misfiring here. Already, that is

:08:56.:09:01.

five service faults from the Italians. That is half of the

:09:02.:09:08.

Iranian tally. It is poor from them. They are all square here.

:09:09.:09:24.

That is poor from Simone Giannelli. The spike was fired straight at him.

:09:25.:09:58.

Off the block. I don't think there was a block on it. It came out wide.

:09:59.:10:15.

No surprise to see a time-out being called. The Italians are not having

:10:16.:10:28.

it there in way in this first set. -- they are not having it their own

:10:29.:10:30.

way. That is a dangerous game when you

:10:31.:11:20.

have got Zaytsev operating like that. They isolated that Blocker,

:11:21.:11:31.

Ebadipour losing out in that head to head with Zaytsev. Italy back in

:11:32.:11:42.

control. Zaytsev wants more of the block.

:11:43.:11:49.

Thunderous from Zaytsev. They had two blockers there. But he knew what

:11:50.:11:56.

he was doing, aiming almost to get off the block.

:11:57.:12:14.

Down the line, beautiful. No response to that, and I was only one

:12:15.:12:25.

block there anyway. Those super slow-mo 's enhanced the spectating

:12:26.:12:30.

of any sport, let's be honest, but in volleyball, you get a real sense

:12:31.:12:33.

of the reach of these players, the heights they can get to. Well

:12:34.:12:40.

defended by the Iranians. And then Italy with another set, and a

:12:41.:12:45.

finish. They thought they had done enough in that first phase attack,

:12:46.:12:54.

but credit the Iranian defending. Juantorena timed it to perfection.

:12:55.:13:07.

That is a free pass now. Can they put it away? Good block. The

:13:08.:13:16.

overpass came straight back for Italy, and they didn't kill it.

:13:17.:13:32.

Filippo Lanza at full stretch there. The Iranian captain, Marouf, experts

:13:33.:13:40.

set, multi-award-winning. It is his unhurried approach which calms

:13:41.:13:45.

Mahmoudi and others, who can get quite emotional. Back on level

:13:46.:13:59.

terms. Repeatedly, it is a deceiving server. It swerves and dips and

:14:00.:14:12.

spins. It is not always easy to dig. Top stuff from Iran. There is the

:14:13.:14:25.

captain. It was simple, and they split the block on the Italian side

:14:26.:14:28.

of the net, Birarelli completely isolated.

:14:29.:14:41.

Birarelli, the captain, doing what he can do. Piano could be joining

:14:42.:14:59.

soon. Here is Piano. That is an ace. Wonderful. If he finds his range,

:15:00.:15:07.

Iran could be struggling. We see it so often. It is difficult

:15:08.:15:31.

enough to win a point in volleyball and get your serve back. But when it

:15:32.:15:38.

is given up as easily as that, it is difficult.

:15:39.:15:44.

Though, well, they all left it for one another on the Iranians side of

:15:45.:15:51.

the net and the Italians have caught a break. Expecting the Spike and

:15:52.:16:00.

this time they played something different. Just out. There are

:16:01.:16:10.

challenges allowed at these Rio Olympics. They have the Hawk-Eye

:16:11.:16:18.

cameras. Italy going for it. Felt it was in, why not give it a go? Well

:16:19.:16:23.

through the match. Two challenges per set, was it in or out? That's

:16:24.:16:28.

the decision facing the Hawk-Eye officials. Did the serve land in or

:16:29.:16:38.

was it in Sao Paulo? That was out. Well worth it, but that means, as

:16:39.:16:42.

you can see, they just have one challenge remaining. If they'd won

:16:43.:16:49.

it, they would still have two. Playing it safe with the serve, and

:16:50.:16:57.

when they get the serve right, running onto it, having something of

:16:58.:17:08.

a purple patch, beer rarely. Isolating the blocker, which is key

:17:09.:17:14.

to killing the attack. The set and the Spike off the block and the

:17:15.:17:20.

Iranians have scored. Not the deepest of Serbs from Birarelli. --

:17:21.:17:25.

serves. Another strong serve. Doing what he

:17:26.:17:51.

does best, coming in from the wide right wing position, is a yet

:17:52.:18:02.

serve -- Zaytsev. You can mix it up, he can go crosscourt, but it is

:18:03.:18:10.

knowing when to drop in the subtlety as well. Italy on serve and Iran

:18:11.:18:16.

have scored, with Italy getting a taste of their own medicine. When

:18:17.:18:26.

they stick together, there is little comeback. The best blocker but also

:18:27.:18:34.

a mighty finisher too. That's a good serve, it was out by not very much.

:18:35.:18:46.

The temptation to go for the challenge. Italy can increase the

:18:47.:18:56.

lead if they go further ahead. Zaytsev going big and into the net.

:18:57.:19:04.

At this stage in the set, it becomes, as much as anything, a

:19:05.:19:15.

battle of nerves. The little floated serve, Italy set and they've just

:19:16.:19:19.

gone into the believe again. That's what it means. We are seeing Oleg

:19:20.:19:27.

Antonov coming on now. One of the replacements, the substitute player

:19:28.:19:31.

who played a lot of the game against Canada and by the end he had found

:19:32.:19:35.

his rhythm, especially with his serve, which is why he's been

:19:36.:19:40.

brought on. If he picks up where he left off against Canada, Iran may be

:19:41.:19:45.

on the back foot. Great top spin on that server. That's a good score

:19:46.:20:05.

from the Iranians, my -- my -- ten Faye again. -- Mahmoudi again.

:20:06.:20:20.

Oh, Mahmoudi. Down the side. What a brilliant pass, absolutely

:20:21.:20:33.

brilliant. It was a good set as well. The buzzer sounds, Italy

:20:34.:20:41.

time-out. Not surprised. Three more scores are required here, to take

:20:42.:20:47.

the set. 22-21, Iran are on serve. It is a

:20:48.:21:37.

bad -- Ebadipour deserve, skimming the net. They'll take that. -- to

:21:38.:21:55.

serve. Italy are to serve. If they keep the standard up it's going to

:21:56.:22:04.

be some match. Giannelli to serve again. A good serve as well. Second

:22:05.:22:11.

contact and the third and it just cannoned off the shoulder. Zaytsev.

:22:12.:22:23.

Iran, edging closer. The top scorer of the match, Mahmoudi. You can

:22:24.:22:34.

understand the furrowed brow of the captain, Birarelli. That wasn't the

:22:35.:22:41.

finish that Zaytsev wanted, but off the block, the dig that and happen.

:22:42.:22:56.

Zaytsev will be disappointed. Perhaps getting a touch lucky there.

:22:57.:23:02.

But they have the serve and if it is a clean ace they will have set

:23:03.:23:09.

point. Dear me, not the time for another service fault because Iran

:23:10.:23:17.

have set point. Interesting times inside the Americans Ennio here. Two

:23:18.:23:28.

-- Maracanazinho. Whenever they are approaching

:23:29.:23:46.

something important in the set, an comes Mahdavi. This is dumping

:23:47.:23:53.

difficult -- on comes. Italy breathing a sigh of relief. That

:23:54.:24:01.

depth, it wasn't the easiest dig. So, the first set, you have to be

:24:02.:24:05.

two scores clear to take the set. It is in play, the key part. Oh,

:24:06.:24:22.

what a block from Zaytsev. That was mighty. Ghafour, only just on the

:24:23.:24:32.

court, letting fly, but Zaytsev blocked it outstandingly well. Just

:24:33.:24:45.

to disrupt here, Iran call a time-out.

:24:46.:24:54.

How far have they come over the last few years? Climbing up the world

:24:55.:25:03.

rankings, taking Poland, I watched the match, they were outstanding.

:25:04.:25:06.

They had match points before Poland and could have closed it out for an

:25:07.:25:12.

historic first Olympic victory. Instead they squandered their match

:25:13.:25:16.

points and eventually, Poland took them out. So now, Italy, with the

:25:17.:25:26.

captain, Birarelli serving for the first set. Continuing off the block.

:25:27.:25:36.

Trying to go down the line and off the block from the Italian defence,

:25:37.:25:46.

Ghaemi. Saving one set point. It's a case of thinking clearly under

:25:47.:25:54.

pressure. Again it is the running serve and it is a deep one. Italy

:25:55.:26:01.

receiving it well, Zaytsev. Iran get it. The team in white get it for

:26:02.:26:12.

another set point. Well played, gaffe or -- Ghafour.

:26:13.:26:22.

If this serve is good... Ghaemi going strong into the net, another

:26:23.:26:38.

one going for glory and another set point has been squandered. Italy

:26:39.:26:43.

have gone level. They have the chance to push forward for their own

:26:44.:26:48.

set point. And here is the man to do it. Is over. It seemed to bobble

:26:49.:27:05.

over the net. And off the block, Ghafour strikes again for the third

:27:06.:27:06.

set point. Zaytsev, has this set slipped away?

:27:07.:27:25.

It was a risky league. They've just got it right. Back court, the

:27:26.:27:33.

Italian defence. -- risky leave. Here come the changes. Playing here

:27:34.:27:50.

as a wing spiker, but he has a good serve. He has been brought on to do

:27:51.:27:55.

a job. That is a floater and it is too long. You could see what he was

:27:56.:28:01.

trying to do. Iran, the defence moved aside to let the ball drop.

:28:02.:28:06.

Making the right decision. What's that phrase, you had one job. He

:28:07.:28:15.

didn't make it there. Mahmoudi here for Iran. Iran are on their fourth

:28:16.:28:28.

set point. Defending, and that finished by Italy, wow. 28-28, went

:28:29.:28:39.

who is going to blink first, this is key. If Italy were to get ahead, how

:28:40.:28:47.

would Iran react? The more experienced international

:28:48.:28:53.

competitors. That was a good dig by Zaytsev. And Juantorena. They have

:28:54.:29:10.

the serve. That first dig in defence from Italy was crucial because Iran

:29:11.:29:15.

were playing catch up in the rally. Italy enjoying the set and finishing

:29:16.:29:21.

the point. So it is a second time out here.

:29:22.:29:36.

Very experienced, in charge of the national teams of Spain, Poland and

:29:37.:29:43.

Germany. Coast in Italy, Greece and Poland. A wealth of experience --

:29:44.:29:53.

coached in. And they are benefiting, the way that they have beaten some

:29:54.:29:57.

of the top teams, although they are up against it now. Quarterfinals,

:29:58.:30:05.

Italy with the second point. Ooh, just going down, pouncing up over

:30:06.:30:17.

the net. He knew what he wanted to do, Birarelli but the ball didn't

:30:18.:30:21.

fall where he landed. Iran were up against Cuba earlier in

:30:22.:30:35.

the tournament. They are bedding in for the long haul.

:30:36.:30:47.

Can they finish this set of? This could be a scramble.

:30:48.:31:11.

The captain, Emanuele Birarelli. And for all that effort, Iran have

:31:12.:31:19.

suffered a first set defeat. Italy pushed all the way, and you can tell

:31:20.:31:23.

there was relief as much as joy when that ball landed on the Iranian side

:31:24.:31:34.

of the net. DAN WALKER: amazing stuff at the

:31:35.:31:38.

Maracana Xenia Knoll. Italy take the first set. I know they were

:31:39.:31:41.

celebrating as though they had won the match, but we could well be in

:31:42.:31:45.

for a long night here on BBC Four, because this is best-of-5 and you

:31:46.:31:49.

can see how evenly matched they are. Stay with us, we will get back for

:31:50.:31:53.

that. I know lots of you have sinned through messages on social media,

:31:54.:31:56.

asking about the guy on each side with the different coloured shirt

:31:57.:32:03.

on. I will explain the role of the Libero. But let's just bring you the

:32:04.:32:11.

BBC Four day 12 headlines. In the men's football, Brazil beat

:32:12.:32:16.

Honduras 6-0 in the semifinal. They go into Saturday's gold medal match,

:32:17.:32:20.

where they take on Germany, who got the better of Nigeria by 2-0.

:32:21.:32:27.

We all know it's not been a great Games for Team GB's boxers, and

:32:28.:32:32.

Savannah Marshall today lost in her quarterfinal against her nemesis,

:32:33.:32:36.

Nouchka Fontijn. Nicola Adams and Joe Joyce are the only two GB boxers

:32:37.:32:43.

who remain. We have seen a lot of Rajiv Ouseph

:32:44.:32:48.

on BBC Four, and he was also out today at the quarterfinal stage of

:32:49.:32:53.

the singles badminton. He lost 2-0 to Denmark's Viktor Axelsen.

:32:54.:33:00.

On the track today, there was another stumble, but Mo Farah

:33:01.:33:03.

produced the goods once again. He managed to finish third and goes

:33:04.:33:08.

into the final of the 5000 metres. He will be going for his fourth

:33:09.:33:13.

Olympic title in the final tee up to the 10,000 metre gold he won the

:33:14.:33:17.

other day and the two golds from London four years ago.

:33:18.:33:23.

And Charley Hull is in a good position after the first round of

:33:24.:33:29.

the women's golf here in Rio. 3-under par round for her today, and

:33:30.:33:36.

she is three off the lead. Now, on BBC One right now, you can

:33:37.:33:42.

see that Team GB are in a very good position in the fourth quarter of

:33:43.:33:46.

their semifinal against New Zealand. 3-0 up, so the bronze medallists

:33:47.:33:51.

from four years ago set to be into the gold medal match. They will be

:33:52.:33:55.

taking on the Dutch, who came through their semifinal against

:33:56.:33:59.

Germany. We will try and bring you that, I imagine, on BBC One over the

:34:00.:34:07.

next few days. Now, cool Delta sent a message

:34:08.:34:10.

saying, watching the volleyball, came in halfway through. What does

:34:11.:34:13.

it mean that they have a member of the opposition on each team? It is

:34:14.:34:18.

not that. The player with a different coloured shirt is called

:34:19.:34:21.

the Libero. There are slightly shorter than some of the other

:34:22.:34:24.

significant units on those volleyball sides. They are the free

:34:25.:34:29.

player. They are restricted to being a back row player. They cannot

:34:30.:34:38.

complete an attack. They may not serve. They are not allowed to block

:34:39.:34:42.

real attempt to block, and they must wear a different coloured shirt from

:34:43.:34:46.

the other members of the team. And they are not allowed in that

:34:47.:34:49.

different coloured area by the net. Keep your eye on the Libero and keep

:34:50.:34:53.

your eyes on this one, because Italy took the first set. It is going to

:34:54.:34:58.

go all the way, I have a feeling. It is best-of-5 sets. Let's go back and

:34:59.:35:05.

rejoin our commentators at the start of the second set.

:35:06.:35:18.

COMMENTATOR: Good block. He is the best blocker. He was trying to go

:35:19.:35:35.

crosscourt, but Saeid had got his hand where he wanted it. Italy are

:35:36.:35:44.

looking to get off the mark. They manage it.

:35:45.:35:57.

A breakthrough in the world league of 2015 for the Iranians. Well, it

:35:58.:36:08.

is a risky manoeuvre at the best of times and it wasn't the best

:36:09.:36:12.

contact. It was almost like he took his eye off the ball, Seyed. He was

:36:13.:36:19.

given the window, but couldn't push through.

:36:20.:36:36.

That one worked, but Italy were reading it. A block against Seyed,

:36:37.:36:43.

magnificent. Again, thwarting Zaytsev. The jump, the height and

:36:44.:36:55.

reach over the net were perfect. It's not just about the block, it's

:36:56.:37:00.

arranging your hands so it turns into a kill. That was long.

:37:01.:37:20.

Juantorena, maintaining this top six rotation. Coming in for the kill was

:37:21.:37:29.

Ebadipour. The decoy was Seyed. That came wide off the block, I

:37:30.:37:54.

think. Just off the elbow of my roof. Well, like

:37:55.:38:12.

in any sport, it is a combination of technique and skill and a bit of

:38:13.:38:16.

luck, and that was the case there with that Italian score. Poor set,

:38:17.:38:31.

too close to the net. That gave every opportunity for the blockers

:38:32.:38:35.

to be ready, and then put pressure on Lanza, and they lost the point.

:38:36.:38:48.

Better set, and that is why you need a good set.

:38:49.:39:02.

What are they going to do? Goodness me, what force behind that serve

:39:03.:39:12.

from Zaytsev. That is superb. They need a bit of a lift here, and they

:39:13.:39:23.

need this man to provide it. He was an Olympic gold medallist for the

:39:24.:39:31.

USSR, his father. He was playing in Italy at the time, and Zaytsev was

:39:32.:39:35.

born there. And he's becoming a hero for Italy. It worked so well in the

:39:36.:39:48.

first set. Not on this occasion. The twists and turns by the Italian

:39:49.:39:54.

blockers, and the ball move go crosscourt, and Italy have a two

:39:55.:40:00.

break. Zaytsev has been the architect of this. He wanted the

:40:01.:40:14.

ace, but not that time. Too long. Looking for consistency in that

:40:15.:40:15.

power serve, but not finding it. A smile from Ebadipour. Absolutely

:40:16.:40:45.

brilliant. Try doing that at home. Absolutely superb, the plunge down,

:40:46.:40:46.

the dive and they win the point. They go for power, but of the block.

:40:47.:41:08.

When those arms are strong, the ball just ricochets. And in court as

:41:09.:41:17.

well. You're always expecting one team's level to drop-off and one

:41:18.:41:23.

side of the net to see a run of points. It hasn't happened in the

:41:24.:41:27.

first set or the second here. The Italians were pushed all the way in

:41:28.:41:31.

that opening set, and the second is going exactly the same, nip and

:41:32.:41:37.

tuck. Italy have the serve on this occasion. If you're hurting, you

:41:38.:41:48.

know the other people are hurting. Both sides were at it. Iran knows

:41:49.:41:54.

it's no good feeling sorry for themselves, they have to do it

:41:55.:41:58.

again. And once more, they are back in the front. Wow, 12 for Italy.

:41:59.:42:07.

That is 12 scores that have been offered to Iran here. That is a lot.

:42:08.:42:11.

If you're talking about winning gold medals, you need to cut that out.

:42:12.:42:16.

There is another service fault. That is three service faults in a

:42:17.:42:35.

row, two for Italy, one for Iran. Italy draw level. Some spectacular

:42:36.:43:03.

rallies, but this is intense competition. They know what is at

:43:04.:43:08.

stake, a place in the semifinals. For Iran, on their first Olympic

:43:09.:43:12.

appearance, this is an occasion to be treasured and also won if

:43:13.:43:15.

possible, against one of the top teams in the world.

:43:16.:43:26.

He has done it again, Seyed! Superb. Three men in a line, an Iranian

:43:27.:43:42.

wall, and the tallest, Seyed. Off his left arm, it drops down

:43:43.:43:45.

obediently, and they are back in front.

:43:46.:44:09.

Birarelli goes over. That was easy for Italy to receive, turn from

:44:10.:44:20.

defence to a fence, and then Birarelli kills -- from defence to

:44:21.:44:24.

fence. I thought that was going out of the

:44:25.:44:40.

arena! It is another service fault. One step forward, but Iran seemed to

:44:41.:44:46.

take two. No end in sight to this misfiring on the serve for Italy.

:44:47.:44:57.

Zaytsev! When that happens, volleyball is made to look easy.

:44:58.:45:10.

Incomes Zaytsev, the specialist. He goes crosscourt and Lancet. -- lands

:45:11.:45:15.

it. You've got to admired the

:45:16.:45:30.

partnership, he knows where he's going to be, Mahmoudi. Seyed was

:45:31.:45:40.

waiting. Making that part of the net his own, blocking and attacking.

:45:41.:45:50.

Take that. Birarelli, huge presence at the net. Standing over two metres

:45:51.:46:00.

tall. Time-out is not called by Italy. Piano, two of his eight.

:46:01.:46:11.

Clever, Colletti is just as good and Zaytsev, fantastic defence from

:46:12.:46:16.

Iran. The third contact must tip the ball over the net. Here come Italy,

:46:17.:46:24.

Iran still defending. The second referee intervened, there was a net

:46:25.:46:28.

touch which is why Italy have taken the point. A big point, that, as

:46:29.:46:35.

well. And so easy to get close to the net and touch it before you hit

:46:36.:46:46.

the ball. Over two decades since they last failed to make a Olympic

:46:47.:46:53.

semifinal in the men's Whalley ball. The right channel and he really

:46:54.:46:59.

found the finish, Mahmoudi smack volleyball. He was onto it in a

:47:00.:47:07.

flash, man moody. Two blockers, no problem. They covered the cross ball

:47:08.:47:24.

Ashya's -- Mahmoudi. Was that one of the Iranians attackers on the back

:47:25.:47:32.

line? Was the libero infringing as well? Rejected, so we stay as we

:47:33.:47:45.

were, 14-14. Fantastic value, great entertainment and we still possibly

:47:46.:47:54.

have four more sets to go. Zaytsev again, and the tip. Two touches says

:47:55.:48:01.

the referee. Just the hands possibly of Mahmoudi is not working in

:48:02.:48:08.

unison. Not just a question of picking it up and doing it again,

:48:09.:48:10.

the left-hand and the right-hand. So, we go again here at 15-14,

:48:11.:49:00.

neither team has had a lead of more than one. But this is the

:49:01.:49:10.

quarterfinal, the Olympic Games. A semifinal place is on offer against

:49:11.:49:16.

the United States. 15-14, Italy are on serve. This is going to be a lead

:49:17.:49:22.

of two for someone but the first time in the match. Great defence and

:49:23.:49:27.

I think it is, they thought they had scored off the block. Oh, 15-15, it

:49:28.:49:37.

has gone against the Italians, that's why you can see the animation

:49:38.:49:42.

on the sidelines. The code leading the fight, no surprise to see the

:49:43.:49:48.

challenge. -- the coach. They turned away in absolute conviction there.

:49:49.:49:58.

So, Italy claiming there was no touch, it went straight through the

:49:59.:50:01.

block and therefore they should get the point, not Iran. Not agreed, the

:50:02.:50:14.

referee has said that it was off the block. So, Ebadipour, 15-15. Take

:50:15.:50:28.

that, from Lanza. If the referee isn't going to help us, we'll help

:50:29.:50:35.

ourselves. Back court power, Buti was there as the decoy, there is

:50:36.:50:40.

Lanza. Only one in the block and no way he was going to beat back in

:50:41.:50:48.

that split second. A demonstration of exactly why the quality of the

:50:49.:50:53.

set has to be there for either side. A good, deep set has the attacker

:50:54.:51:01.

running on it from back court, plenty of follow-through. A better

:51:02.:51:06.

angle to aim it down and over the net. Here come the Iranians. Now

:51:07.:51:14.

there is a lead of two. 17-15, Italy on serve and they have set

:51:15.:51:18.

themselves up at the business end of the second set. That's super, really

:51:19.:51:29.

good net play, superb defence. Antonov has come on and has

:51:30.:51:32.

delivered. Maintaining the service again. It is good. The block is

:51:33.:51:43.

ready but so too is Lanza. And again, off the block, it is 18-15.

:51:44.:51:51.

The change has worked. Antonov comes on and it is two good Serbs in a row

:51:52.:51:56.

and what was one point is now a 3-point lead -- serves. And there is

:51:57.:52:04.

the buzzer. Iran needs to break the concentration, break the Italian

:52:05.:52:05.

momentum. First big challenge for Iran in this

:52:06.:52:51.

match. They've stayed with them until they were just partying at the

:52:52.:52:59.

end of the first set. Now, Oleg Antonov, as you may have guessed, he

:53:00.:53:06.

is Russian. It came back on the Italian side of the net and they

:53:07.:53:11.

kill it, four points clear. Very rare that we see no defence of the

:53:12.:53:17.

pup from Iran. Almost a free score. 19-15. -- the defence of Iran. The

:53:18.:53:31.

switch for Antonov. Just going for gold, but it was too long. Even so,

:53:32.:53:37.

it is a big move forward which is why Buti was so fulsome in his

:53:38.:53:43.

praise. Giving Antonov, young player making his way, although he is 28

:53:44.:53:49.

years old, starting his international career, a big boost.

:53:50.:53:57.

Coming back Woods off the blog, is eight serve getting what he and

:53:58.:54:04.

Italy wanted -- coming backwards off the block, Zaytsev. One of the best

:54:05.:54:14.

in the world, he seems to hang there and somehow mobilises that huge

:54:15.:54:20.

power through his arm. Giannelli, more confidence and it's the ace.

:54:21.:54:24.

Look at the speed, 100 kilometres per hour. They've made the break and

:54:25.:54:30.

they are going for the line. Talk about game management from the

:54:31.:54:34.

Italians. Never more than one school clear until we reached around 16 and

:54:35.:54:41.

then the coaches made the switch and Italy have really turned the screw.

:54:42.:54:54.

Leading by five. Given away. The service faults, we've seen a lot of

:54:55.:54:57.

it from Italy in the first set and they haven't eradicated the issue.

:54:58.:55:02.

Here they are, going back to their A formation in the face of adversity,

:55:03.:55:17.

the Iranians, it is Ghafour and Mahdavi coming on. That's caused

:55:18.:55:23.

problems for is eight serve. Very much advantage Iran -- it is

:55:24.:55:30.

Zaytsev. And they have taken the point. Again, it look like and

:55:31.:55:37.

innocuous and innocent serve, floated over but even Zaytsev

:55:38.:55:43.

couldn't deal with it properly, that is the skill of Mahmoudi. Deceptive

:55:44.:55:51.

in the air. The Italian lead was five, not any more. It was in, the

:55:52.:56:02.

Italians aren't happy about it. No, no, no, they say. They claim it was

:56:03.:56:07.

out and the referee agrees. You wonder if there is going to be a

:56:08.:56:15.

challenge. Can't believe it. The referee is absolutely adamant. No

:56:16.:56:18.

challenge. The backspin on that. It came along,

:56:19.:56:35.

23-18, the advantage is back to five here. Italy creeping towards the

:56:36.:56:41.

finish line in the second set. It's a big set, isn't it, 1-1 or 2-0.

:56:42.:56:48.

Psychologically, it will affect the team who have won the set. If it is

:56:49.:56:53.

Italy, just one more will be required. Kill block, here come the

:56:54.:56:59.

Italian team. So, the Iranians are back on serve. You can see the

:57:00.:57:06.

confidence growing and coursing through the Italian team. When

:57:07.:57:13.

they've made the break, the serves that previously were going too long,

:57:14.:57:23.

now the pressure is on Iran. It is set point, Italy. Juantorena, you

:57:24.:57:35.

knew from those cheers. The captain, Birarelli, who has the chance to

:57:36.:57:37.

close out the second set. Off the block. And off the blog, it

:57:38.:57:57.

is a simple, 25-19 and Italy, having been pushed to extra time, in the

:57:58.:58:03.

sense that they were pushed in the first set, this time they've done it

:58:04.:58:09.

in regulation -- lock. And Iran have just about pushed Italy in the

:58:10.:58:19.

second set -- block. Italy have the big-game experience and telling

:58:20.:58:25.

Serbs from Antonov. STUDIO: -- telling serves. Italy against Iran

:58:26.:58:28.

in the men's volleyball quarterfinal. We will be back for

:58:29.:58:34.

the third and possibly decisive set. Talking in the break about the

:58:35.:58:38.

importance of the libero, I just want to show you the work of

:58:39.:58:57.

Marandi. On BBC One while we showed you the volleyball, Team GB have

:58:58.:59:07.

been involved in the semifinal of the women's hockey and the good news

:59:08.:59:13.

is that they have won 3-0. They are into the gold-medal match. You can

:59:14.:59:18.

see what it meant. That game against the Netherlands, the number one

:59:19.:59:22.

ranked team in the world, will take place on Friday. 9pm, UK time. Team

:59:23.:59:29.

GB, led by Kate Richardson waltz, taking on the Americans after

:59:30.:59:35.

beating New Zealand come principally 3-0. A fewer early scares, New

:59:36.:59:45.

Zealand had chances -- a few. New Zealand, dejected, and the bronze

:59:46.:59:49.

medallists, Team GB, have a chance to go for the Gold Medal against the

:59:50.:59:55.

Netherlands. A lot of you getting excited about the arrival of the

:59:56.:00:00.

Copacabinmen and I can tell you that they are preparing the circuit

:00:01.:00:04.

training area. No sign of Antony Worrall Thompson but we'll keep out

:00:05.:00:08.

a close eye. Normally at this time we are preparing for the arrival of

:00:09.:00:12.

the bin men. If you are watching for the first time, they waved to us,

:00:13.:00:20.

they are called Raphael, Donatello, Pedro and Alejandro, so they are 50%

:00:21.:00:27.

there to being the Teenage Mutant Binmen. Tonight we thought that they

:00:28.:00:33.

had come. We recorded this 15 minutes ago. This is a brand-new

:00:34.:00:36.

development. Enter Sandman! This is the fellow who smooths out

:00:37.:00:50.

the sand on Copacabana and gives it a bit of a clean. Now, you do not

:00:51.:00:56.

get that at Copacabognor. Incredible scenes. We were thinking we might

:00:57.:01:00.

slow that down for you for some intense replay action. There you go!

:01:01.:01:08.

That, my friends, is slow motions and action. You do not get that on

:01:09.:01:18.

BBC One. -- slow motion sand action. If the Copacabinmen come, we will

:01:19.:01:21.

bring you news on that. Let's get back to the volleyball. Third set

:01:22.:01:30.

from the Maracanazinho. Italy 2-0 up. They have to win this at Iran to

:01:31.:01:38.

keep the match going. Let's pick up the commentary.

:01:39.:01:53.

COMMENTATOR: Maybe we are going to see the Italians mixing it up here.

:01:54.:02:02.

Cheap point given away. That was either going to be a brilliant

:02:03.:02:06.

serve, fooling everybody, or just disappear.

:02:07.:02:19.

Wow, so powerful from Filippo Lanza. You could see he was primed. Just a

:02:20.:02:40.

big leap. Italy into the lead already. Absolutely huge leap from

:02:41.:02:51.

Juantorena. Again, it is the confidence game.

:02:52.:03:09.

Oh, that was super from Zaytsev. Absolutely brilliant. The best

:03:10.:03:18.

players improvise, and that is what Zaytsev did there. He made up for

:03:19.:03:22.

his error earlier. He pushed into the back the court. Not only did he

:03:23.:03:31.

get it over, he placed it and won the point. That is why you look to

:03:32.:03:38.

your defensive specialist, the libero, and say, you should have

:03:39.:03:42.

been factoring that in. It didn't happen for Iran. You just

:03:43.:03:53.

wonder if this entire fixture now is slipping away from the Iranians. You

:03:54.:04:03.

talk about the intensity of the match. If you have done it again and

:04:04.:04:08.

again like the Italians have, it asks a lot of the body and mind to

:04:09.:04:10.

keep so alert. Well, when it works, it really

:04:11.:04:30.

works. My roof again, swooping like a swallow. It is like a football

:04:31.:04:34.

match. Maybe a smaller team could keep pace for 70 minutes, and then

:04:35.:04:39.

in the last 20, the more experienced team starts to make that experience

:04:40.:04:42.

and expertise tell. There is a screen of players waiting

:04:43.:05:13.

on the Iranian side, trying to camouflage where the ball might go.

:05:14.:05:18.

The point, of course, is to get over the net. That is not what Ebadipour

:05:19.:05:29.

managed. Zaytsev has his knee braces on.

:05:30.:05:40.

Iran get the nod. It can often be more down to luck than judgment as

:05:41.:05:54.

to who wins the point. Off the block. Italy are back in the

:05:55.:06:14.

ascendancy. Clever by Giannelli. The block was close. He could have set

:06:15.:06:25.

it. It went off Seyed's head! They all count. But that was not what

:06:26.:06:30.

they were expecting, and it paid off.

:06:31.:06:38.

Good placement, Ghafour. And brilliant by Marouf.

:06:39.:07:02.

That was the expression which said it all.

:07:03.:07:20.

Oh, brilliant! Giannelli, and again, it's that speed of thought at the

:07:21.:07:59.

net. ", Kill. He went for the spike of the previous point. This time, it

:08:00.:08:03.

was the left arm over. To execute that crosscourt spike,

:08:04.:08:39.

you have do stand pretty much side on. Off the block, so Iran are

:08:40.:08:48.

edging back. Zaytsev, thank you very much indeed.

:08:49.:09:13.

Slapped that one away. Receive and kill. Move and fire. Zaytsev, just

:09:14.:09:24.

down the right of Marouf. Wow, that looked to be going out but

:09:25.:09:47.

was just off the block. They have found the accelerator, but there is

:09:48.:09:50.

a red light from the coaches. Big trouble for Iran if Italy start

:09:51.:10:42.

to move away. Just in, not by much. It just lands

:10:43.:11:10.

on that red line. Zaytsev is not sure, because he turns around and

:11:11.:11:18.

wants confirmation. Another absolute storm as a serve. When they get that

:11:19.:11:29.

serve right, boy, it looks good. Zaytsev, right-wing spike again of

:11:30.:11:35.

that block to make it look easy. Iran are reeling. They are making

:11:36.:11:43.

the changes. Ghaemi is coming back. Just trying to freshen it up. You

:11:44.:11:47.

sense that this is their sixth game on their Olympic debut. They have

:11:48.:11:52.

played outstandingly well. They are learning all the time, but now they

:11:53.:11:56.

are coming up against hugely experienced teams, players who have

:11:57.:12:02.

been around and played top-level international volleyball, and it is

:12:03.:12:03.

telling. Good swing. Not even Juantorena

:12:04.:12:18.

could keep that up. Yes, two sets down, but still having their

:12:19.:12:21.

moments, Iran. They just need more moments like that. That is not

:12:22.:12:33.

going to help their cause, their big Spica, Mahmoudi, taking a breather.

:12:34.:12:40.

They need all their big players at the moment. Good decision-making at

:12:41.:12:46.

the net from Ghafour. But Italy take the point. Maybe the

:12:47.:12:58.

second official spotted a net touch. The Birarelli, two metres tall and

:12:59.:13:28.

still gets the ball off the floor. This was brilliant from Birarelli.

:13:29.:13:34.

He gets there, but to keep it in play is a different skill entirely.

:13:35.:13:39.

We know Zaytsev is a full on customer. And he is there with the

:13:40.:13:53.

spike. Zarini is one of the guys they brought on to provide some

:13:54.:13:54.

fresh legs here. The Italians started in Atlanta in

:13:55.:14:13.

1996. They medalled only wants at the Olympics, in 2008. What a serve!

:14:14.:14:21.

Absolutely outstanding. Completely deceived everyone. Even his

:14:22.:14:24.

team-mates didn't know where that was going. In a hurry to get this

:14:25.:14:27.

done and dusted, Italy. Time-out. Silver medal in Atlanta for Italy,

:14:28.:14:54.

bronze in Sydney, Silver again in Athens. So they have had their fair

:14:55.:14:58.

share of gold medal match heartbreak. Fourth in 2008, and back

:14:59.:15:05.

on the podium with a bronze at Earls Court in London. Don't talk to them

:15:06.:15:09.

about the gold medal. They have never won it, and that is their big

:15:10.:15:13.

target here, having made such a great start and now heading towards

:15:14.:15:18.

the semifinals, seemingly. Maybe this could be their Games.

:15:19.:15:25.

What a good serve, skimming the net. Lanza with the chance to finish and

:15:26.:15:38.

down the line it goes, 17-10. Iran must feel they are treading through

:15:39.:15:42.

concrete at the moment. Everything seemed to work at one stage, Italy

:15:43.:15:47.

took those two sets but they pushed them all the way. Here, they are

:15:48.:15:53.

being left behind, like the marrow from one who thought he was on

:15:54.:15:56.

course for the Gold Medal but the more experienced companion decides

:15:57.:16:06.

to click on -- the marathon runner. It is the familiar change for Iran

:16:07.:16:13.

in an adversity. Zaytsev still gets it wrong. It was long. Never mind,

:16:14.:16:24.

they'll kick on. 17-11, Iran back on serve. It's a long way back for

:16:25.:16:37.

Iran. Waving the flag is. -- flags. The referee confirming 18-11. Lanza,

:16:38.:16:41.

a mighty swing. And here comes ros seeny -- Rossini.

:16:42.:17:03.

Floater, that's not a good one. Not at all, they've just dropped off,

:17:04.:17:13.

the Iranians. Again it seemed such a simple serve but it caused

:17:14.:17:21.

confusion. You don't get the sense of the swerve that the players can

:17:22.:17:31.

put on it. Iran, up to 12. Well played, Ghafour. Has the ball in

:17:32.:17:41.

hand. Isolating the blocker, Juantorena.

:17:42.:17:51.

It is one point two score for Italy. He is so important for them, that is

:17:52.:18:19.

why they were worried in the game when he landed awkwardly on his

:18:20.:18:25.

ankle against France, early on. He carried on, he didn't want to miss

:18:26.:18:30.

that because previously they had been whitewashed against France,

:18:31.:18:34.

losing the last five matches, but that start has been built. Antonov,

:18:35.:18:43.

the key player from the second set. Just at the net. Zaytsev comes. But

:18:44.:18:57.

he doesn't conquer. Good block. Buti returns but if you look at the

:18:58.:19:01.

sadistic 's, 32 points scored between Zaytsev and Juantorena --

:19:02.:19:11.

the statistics. It has been too piecemeal from Iran. What a good

:19:12.:19:18.

serve, but it's just out. The line judge had his flag down. Looking at

:19:19.:19:24.

it, isn't he, really staring it down. Are we going to the video?

:19:25.:19:33.

Juantorena is saying it is out, he left it, it is out. Off-balance

:19:34.:19:47.

there. 22 playing 14 now. Italy are up against the semifinal and if you

:19:48.:19:55.

listen carefully you can hear keys jangling. The first three sets.

:19:56.:20:02.

Italy are on course here to take their place in the last four with

:20:03.:20:08.

plenty to spare. OK, service fault again, that's the mistakes of the

:20:09.:20:16.

first set again but the advantageous is still seven. What has Seyed got

:20:17.:20:29.

in the armoury? Strong, off the block. Juantorena taking another

:20:30.:20:37.

point and Italy are almost there. Two more points. The first to 25 or

:20:38.:20:46.

two points clear. Lanza back, the wing Spica. Presence at the net.

:20:47.:21:01.

Italy defending it, they are at the net again, Juantorena to try and get

:21:02.:21:06.

things going. Iran is scrambling, this will be some save if they can

:21:07.:21:14.

win the rally. Close to the net. Zaytsev in. Here they are with nine

:21:15.:21:20.

match points, Italy are on the verge now of cementing their place in the

:21:21.:21:23.

last four where they will face the United States. The US, as we know,

:21:24.:21:31.

clean sweep against Poland earlier. Russia against Brazil or Argentina

:21:32.:21:40.

in the other semifinal in the men's volleyball. Juantorena, is this

:21:41.:21:52.

going to be? Strong serve. Iran set, they will have to wait a bit longer,

:21:53.:21:58.

24-16, Iran is Irving. It sounds like they have an advantage -- Iran

:21:59.:22:04.

serving. It isn't like tennis unless it is a really belting serve. That

:22:05.:22:15.

was too long. He can't believe it. I think it is hoped more than

:22:16.:22:24.

expectation. It was a mighty swipe. Oh, no, what a way to bring it. The

:22:25.:22:31.

Iranians captain who has done so much to entertain and drive forward

:22:32.:22:37.

his team, his service fault hands the match to Italy, 3-0. It looks

:22:38.:22:48.

easy, especially in the set. If you ask Zaytsev or Juantorena or

:22:49.:23:04.

Mahmoudi. Without him on the court, Iran were not the same proposition.

:23:05.:23:12.

Gradually wearing them down. It's another semifinal for Italy at the

:23:13.:23:23.

Olympic Games. STUDIO: Great stuff in the volleyball in the marathons

:23:24.:23:32.

Ennio. Iran merely pushed the Italians -- really pushed. As

:23:33.:23:39.

Jonathan was saying, Italy, once again into the last four --

:23:40.:23:45.

Maracanazinho. So many of you enjoyed that. We are going fair at

:23:46.:23:52.

2am, but if you really want to see some intense volleyball, that's the

:23:53.:23:56.

best way to put it, Brazil against Argentina in the fourth

:23:57.:24:00.

quarter-final, that will be on the Red Button and also on the website

:24:01.:24:05.

and app. My editor is listening, may be we can show you the best bits of

:24:06.:24:10.

that tomorrow. Yes, we will. I'm making decisions for him. So many of

:24:11.:24:16.

you have enjoyed the volleyball. Diving and taekwondo in a moment. We

:24:17.:24:23.

have a crowd here, good evening, everybody. Are you all Brazilians?

:24:24.:24:34.

ALL: yes! Are you happy with your team? Yes. Are you going to win the

:24:35.:24:43.

final? No! Nice to see you enjoying yourselves. In case you missed it,

:24:44.:24:49.

Brazil beating Honduras 6-0 in the semifinal. Germany getting the

:24:50.:24:56.

better of Nigeria 2-0 and our German friends, enjoy your corn on the cob,

:24:57.:25:01.

gentlemen, it only costs ?1 50 and it is very tasty. We have some

:25:02.:25:08.

diving and taekwondo coming up later. I enjoy reading your messages

:25:09.:25:14.

through the evening, I'm glad so many of you enjoyed the coverage, it

:25:15.:25:19.

means a lot to us here. Steve Collins says that after the

:25:20.:25:23.

brilliant slow motion sand smoothing, any chance of some other

:25:24.:25:26.

slow motion activity on the beach? We will find out. The hashtag many

:25:27.:25:38.

of you are using is Copacabeachcomb, which I wish I had thought of all

:25:39.:25:44.

stop someone saying we should draft in Richard Attenborough. Somebody

:25:45.:25:49.

else says that they are ill but they are watching the volleyball and

:25:50.:25:55.

loving it, the saga of the binmen is putting a smile on their face.

:25:56.:26:07.

Daniel says that they have sand combers on the Isle of Man. Ten

:26:08.:26:13.

minutes ago during the deciding set in the volleyball, the boys were

:26:14.:26:16.

back and doing a magnificent job on the beach. Let's look at them going

:26:17.:26:22.

past. It was our favourites, Raphael, Pedro, although I don't

:26:23.:26:26.

think Donatello was there. There they are. They had the night off

:26:27.:26:31.

yesterday, we had some different binmen. The boys are back and they

:26:32.:26:37.

do a magnificent job. I think that's a new tractor. It's lovely, lovely

:26:38.:26:42.

to see them. We chat with them every day. Doing a great job on the beach.

:26:43.:26:49.

Getting a lot of binmen in the UK contacting us as well, we were

:26:50.:26:54.

talking to build yesterday about the fact that he thinks there going to

:26:55.:27:01.

be some kind of bin Olympics in years to come, some kind of

:27:02.:27:07.

discipline. He said that in Sunderland, his crew have been

:27:08.:27:12.

training, the bin bags throw, the garden wall hurdles and the snatch

:27:13.:27:20.

and hide, apparently! If you were a bin man or in the woman, maybe you'd

:27:21.:27:25.

like to get in contact and we'll have some new faces -- bin woman. We

:27:26.:27:32.

have some brand-new people joining us. Get training. I've not seen

:27:33.:27:38.

these chaps before. This is the beach drag. Always popular. There is

:27:39.:27:47.

a poodle as well. Did he come here last Wednesday? Hold on. Hold your

:27:48.:27:55.

horses. Anthony Watt old Thomson has just arrived, he is on the end, he's

:27:56.:28:00.

getting his trainers on -- Anthony Walker Thomson. Great to see him

:28:01.:28:13.

again. He claims to speak no English, but we all know that it is

:28:14.:28:19.

actually Antony Worrall Thompson. I think that is nine consecutive

:28:20.:28:23.

nights of doing circuit training. Credit to the man, that is

:28:24.:28:28.

impressive. Well done, AWT. We always say, no AWT, no party. We

:28:29.:28:36.

don't really say that! Shall we have some diving? Jack Laugher has been a

:28:37.:28:42.

real success in the games, winning the Silver Medal in the three metre

:28:43.:28:47.

springboard and the Gold Medal a week ago with Chris Mears in the

:28:48.:28:51.

synchronised three metre. We have some ten metre platform diving, the

:28:52.:28:58.

preliminary part of the competition. We have Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow

:28:59.:29:01.

trying to get through the preliminaries into the final. Let's

:29:02.:29:03.

show you how they got on. Strong finish from Tonya, not her

:29:04.:29:24.

best finish but it is good enough and clean enough and she has

:29:25.:29:32.

progressed through -- Tonia. We wanted safe passage through to the

:29:33.:29:37.

next round. Tonia safely through. Well done, Tonia. Good work today.

:29:38.:29:44.

She will be better in the semifinal. Not her very best. She is

:29:45.:29:52.

comfortably through. We can safely assume she is there. Fabulous

:29:53.:30:06.

effort. Not quite keeping the splashdown, I don't think that's

:30:07.:30:11.

good enough for Sarah. Disappointing for her, strong take-off, losing her

:30:12.:30:15.

feet a little bit. Just not quite keeping the splash down. She needs

:30:16.:30:22.

to be close to 300 points I think to make it through to the semifinal.

:30:23.:30:27.

She will be 20 point shiner of that. Yes, she is. Oh, dear.

:30:28.:30:33.

Thankfully, Tonia Couch got into the semifinal. We will pick up with her

:30:34.:30:42.

later. Afterwards, and understandably disappointed Sarah

:30:43.:30:46.

Barrow spoke to Helen Skelton. Sarah, hard. There are two is to

:30:47.:30:51.

look at that - one is disappointing, but then it rounds off the heck of a

:30:52.:30:56.

fight to make it into that team. Definitely. I am disappointed not to

:30:57.:31:00.

make the semi. My ultimate goal was to make the final. But like you

:31:01.:31:07.

said, it has been such a hard fight. Not getting selected for the singer

:31:08.:31:11.

and then having to change my mind set and do my individual dives again

:31:12.:31:15.

and come back from a horrible injury, my goal was to get here in

:31:16.:31:22.

first place. My parents are so proud that I achieved that, and that is

:31:23.:31:26.

fine for me. Tell us about that injury. Some of the commentators

:31:27.:31:30.

were saying doing those dives must have been painful. How difficult

:31:31.:31:34.

have the last couple of years been? Really difficult. In the World

:31:35.:31:39.

Championships, I did those dives with stress fractures. Both my shins

:31:40.:31:43.

were cracked. That is hard in itself, but when you are with

:31:44.:31:46.

asynchronous partner, sometimes you do it for the other person. When you

:31:47.:31:52.

are on your own, day in, day out, getting through those dives is so

:31:53.:31:57.

hard. My legs have not worked as well as they did before the trial is

:31:58.:32:01.

back at home. I have hit the border couple of times. It has not been

:32:02.:32:06.

great. It has just been hard to get through each session. But in the

:32:07.:32:15.

competition, they didn't hurt. You have hinted at retirement. Is this

:32:16.:32:24.

the end of your diving career? I am just going to take tonight. I'm

:32:25.:32:30.

going to go back home a rethink, see what happens. Lots of people are

:32:31.:32:36.

very proud of you, Sarah. Tonia, European champion. You guys have won

:32:37.:32:41.

medals at Commonwealth is back, at Europeans, at World Cups. You have

:32:42.:32:44.

done a phenomenal amount for the sport. You must be proud. I am

:32:45.:32:50.

proud, and I am proud of Tonia for coming fifth today. The medal is not

:32:51.:32:55.

out of reach. You fly the flag for young women. As a sports fan, thank

:32:56.:33:00.

you for all you have done. She should be proud. And a timely

:33:01.:33:04.

reminder, as we see Sarah Barrow upset at what happened in the diving

:33:05.:33:07.

preliminary, it is about getting inspired. These Olympic Games do it

:33:08.:33:13.

for so many people. We were hearing about Adam Peaty, who won the first

:33:14.:33:17.

gold medal of these Games. It was Adam Peaty four years ago who was

:33:18.:33:22.

seeing an old schoolmate of his competing at London in 2012. That

:33:23.:33:26.

gave him the kick up the backside he needed to get back into training and

:33:27.:33:29.

sort himself out to come here and have such an amazing Games not only

:33:30.:33:33.

for himself, but for his family and Team GB. Via the BBC website, you

:33:34.:33:40.

can go to the Get Inspired site. Through there, you can access any of

:33:41.:33:45.

the clubs that are playing an Olympic sport where you can compete

:33:46.:33:50.

in some of the sports. We have had lots of people enquiring about

:33:51.:33:54.

sailing, rugby sevens, taekwondo. That is a really good facility. It

:33:55.:34:00.

might be for you or for your kids. It might be about finding the next

:34:01.:34:04.

generation of Olympians. There aren't genuinely people watching now

:34:05.:34:09.

on BBC Four, I know we are having a bit of fun with things going on on

:34:10.:34:12.

the beach, but there are people watching now who four years down the

:34:13.:34:17.

line might be Olympians themselves, and that is genuinely inspiring.

:34:18.:34:21.

That is why the Get Inspired section of the BBC website is a great place

:34:22.:34:25.

to go. If you are watching and thinking, I want to have a go at

:34:26.:34:29.

that. We turn our attention to taekwondo now, because over the next

:34:30.:34:33.

few days, there are some real Team GB people you should be looking out

:34:34.:34:37.

for. Jade Jones was the gold medallist and champion in the

:34:38.:34:41.

Olympics from four years ago in London. She starts the defence of

:34:42.:34:45.

that total at 2.30 tomorrow. She is under the 57 kilo category. She

:34:46.:34:51.

takes on the Moroccan. She is the overwhelming favourite to defend the

:34:52.:34:56.

title she won four years ago. Her housemate fights in the heavyweight

:34:57.:35:00.

category on Saturday. She has a great chance as well. She is the

:35:01.:35:03.

current world and European champion. Hopefully, she can add an Olympic

:35:04.:35:09.

title to that. And the winner of the bronze in London four years ago, he

:35:10.:35:14.

fights on Friday. None of those are in action tonight, but we are going

:35:15.:35:17.

to bring you one of the semifinals from a different weight category,

:35:18.:35:24.

the under 49 kilo category. We are going to see Mexico take on Serbia.

:35:25.:35:30.

Before we see that, let's give you a quick guide to how taekwondo works.

:35:31.:35:43.

Taekwondo originate in Korea and combines combat and self-defence

:35:44.:35:47.

techniques. It became a fully fledged Olympic sport in Sydney in

:35:48.:35:51.

2000. Each contest has three rounds of two minutes and a competitor can

:35:52.:35:56.

win on points or if their opponent is unable to continue. Points are

:35:57.:36:00.

awarded for permitted, accurate and powerful blows to the opponent's had

:36:01.:36:05.

an body. Attacks to the body can be made using a fist or foot, but an

:36:06.:36:08.

athlete can only use their feet to strike the area above the collar

:36:09.:36:13.

bone. Punches to the head and attacks to the spine are not

:36:14.:36:16.

allowed. The only techniques permitted our kits ready athlete

:36:17.:36:20.

uses the area of the foot below the ankle, and punches, where the

:36:21.:36:23.

athlete uses the knuckle part of a tightly clenched fist. Scoring

:36:24.:36:28.

differs depending on where or how an athlete has attacked. One point is

:36:29.:36:31.

awarded for a valid attack to the body protector, but if the attack is

:36:32.:36:36.

turning or reverse kick to the body, it is worth three points. An athlete

:36:37.:36:39.

will receive three points for illegal kick to the head, and if it

:36:40.:36:44.

is a turning kick, it achieves the maximum four points. After the three

:36:45.:36:47.

rounds, the competitor with the most points wins the match, but in the

:36:48.:36:52.

event of a tie, a golden point over time round is held in which the

:36:53.:36:55.

first athlete to register a point wins the contest.

:36:56.:36:58.

So let's go to the Carioca Arena 3 in Rio and the semifinal in the

:36:59.:37:13.

under 49 kilo category. COMMENTATOR: Here comes Itzel

:37:14.:37:18.

Bastidas, looking confident. She has had a taster of what is to come. I

:37:19.:37:24.

think she will be coming out all guns blazing. Let's see how she

:37:25.:37:32.

fares against Serbia's Tijana Bogdanovic. Tijana Bogdanovic looks

:37:33.:37:41.

much more composed. I was impressed with her focus in her previous

:37:42.:37:45.

fight. She didn't let the challenge of faze her. What a challenge it was

:37:46.:37:51.

as well. That was an incredible fight. It looks like she is the more

:37:52.:37:56.

focused. But every athlete prepares in their own way, so don't

:37:57.:38:07.

underestimate Itzel Bastidas. And she will not be underestimating

:38:08.:38:13.

Bogdanovic by any means. The referee is getting things ready to rumble.

:38:14.:38:30.

It has been bubbling away nicely. And the super young Serb, Tijana

:38:31.:38:41.

Bogdanovic. Making sure the helmet is securely on. You don't want it

:38:42.:38:47.

sticking up to high. Often with athletes with longer hair as well,

:38:48.:38:52.

that does push the head guard up even further. But all the protective

:38:53.:38:59.

equipment is in place. Bogdanovic tries to flick a head shot up. So

:39:00.:39:07.

flexible and so fast. Bogdanovic is looking down slightly. Some of the

:39:08.:39:13.

athletes have almost been looking towards their opponent's eyes. You

:39:14.:39:17.

cannot for a second take your eye off the legs. That is where most of

:39:18.:39:21.

the moves will come from. You make an interesting point in terms of

:39:22.:39:26.

athletes liking to look eye to eye, some at the shoulders, some at the

:39:27.:39:31.

waist. But as you said, you have got to watch the feat. Both ladies are

:39:32.:39:41.

focused here, in this first round. Almost there from Bogdanovic. She

:39:42.:39:53.

went for the head shot. Bogdanovic hopping forward.

:39:54.:40:04.

Both fighters seem to have the measure of one another.

:40:05.:40:18.

The crowd cheering on the Mexican, who almost land they had shot.

:40:19.:40:33.

A little power gauges appearing on the bottom of your screen. If you

:40:34.:40:42.

land with enough power, a sense in the souls of the feet will score

:40:43.:40:46.

automatically, but you need impact. It has been a powerful opening. Very

:40:47.:40:53.

impressive, but neither was able to score in the first round. They only

:40:54.:40:58.

have a minute to recover. It is stop-start between rounds. It is a

:40:59.:41:08.

long day for these fighters. We can hear the words of the Serbian coach.

:41:09.:41:14.

It is a very long day. You have two win, compose, fight, recover. Talk

:41:15.:41:23.

me through the way in. What happens? I know in some sports, it is a few

:41:24.:41:28.

hours before, but in taekwondo, it is the day before. Yes, in

:41:29.:41:34.

taekwondo, you get to have a few days of recovery. That is often

:41:35.:41:40.

needed. How much, how many killers do you reckon they have put on since

:41:41.:41:46.

yesterday? Not as many as us in the commentary box! Huge moments in the

:41:47.:41:56.

semifinal of the Olympic Games, final at stake. The Serb,

:41:57.:42:04.

Bogdanovic, is in red. And you know what colour the Mexican is in.

:42:05.:42:26.

When both fighters have one leg in the air, they are able to generate

:42:27.:42:30.

so much power from the back leg. Bogdanovic changing stance, trying

:42:31.:42:47.

to draw her opponent in. And good tactics from the Mexican. There is a

:42:48.:42:53.

clashing of styles at the moment, and indeed legs. It is getting a bit

:42:54.:43:04.

scrappy. They need to maintain that composure.

:43:05.:43:13.

They are scrapping for a spot in the Olympic final. The under 49

:43:14.:43:28.

kilograms contest is very much open. The Chinese champion is out. The

:43:29.:43:32.

Croatian is also out. The Mexican and Serb will know that the draw is

:43:33.:43:34.

opening up nicely. So much at stake. A picture perfect shot. The Serb

:43:35.:43:56.

steals a lovely three points. Talk about timing. That one gives her

:43:57.:44:02.

opponent something to think about going into the final break before

:44:03.:44:14.

the third round. Right on the buzzer,

:44:15.:44:14.

as you say. We see it from the overhead shot. It shows the distance

:44:15.:44:31.

it has to travel. Look at the accuracy, flicking onto the face.

:44:32.:44:41.

Flexibility and force. Just about catches with a big toe, but it is

:44:42.:44:45.

enough for the sensor to make contact. She will be dancing tonight

:44:46.:44:55.

if she can get into an Olympic final. Bastidas, from Mexico, has to

:44:56.:45:05.

produce something big here. Bogdanovic is really composed. Good

:45:06.:45:09.

defence behind that front leg. When you hold your leg up like that, it

:45:10.:45:18.

leaves no space on either side. The Mexican is finding it difficult to

:45:19.:45:27.

find a space. We are going to see the tempo in this round picking up.

:45:28.:45:32.

Bastidas has to find something now. She cannot be content to sit back

:45:33.:45:36.

and allow Bogdanovic to control the fight. You are right, the tempo is

:45:37.:45:44.

important for the Mexican. She has to change stance. She's falling a

:45:45.:45:47.

bit short. Power punch from the American and

:45:48.:45:58.

feedback leg. Blocked by Bogdanovic, not allowing the clean contact. The

:45:59.:46:15.

Olympic Games final coming here. Tijana Bogdanovic slipping back

:46:16.:46:18.

here, avoiding the drop kick from Bastidas. What a battle this is

:46:19.:46:27.

turning out to be. We know things can change quickly, the Mexican will

:46:28.:46:30.

have to do something quickly now. Such an intense workrate all stop --

:46:31.:46:41.

workrate. Great response from Bogdanovic, that's what happens,

:46:42.:46:46.

timing and the perfect counter kick. Perfect timing with 20 seconds left

:46:47.:46:51.

on the clock, Bogdanovic is in a commanding position with a 6-point

:46:52.:46:57.

lead. Serbia have had an Olympic champion. Tijana Bogdanovic taking

:46:58.:47:05.

another headshot to close a fantastic third round. She's into

:47:06.:47:12.

the Olympic Games final. What chance for Serbia winning to repeat that?

:47:13.:47:21.

Bogdanovic, in with a shout, she's into the final. There you go, the

:47:22.:47:29.

first bit of taekwondo action we've shown you from these Games. Day 12

:47:30.:47:34.

and plenty more to come, loads over the next few days and we'll bring

:47:35.:47:39.

you Jade Jones, who is on tomorrow. A bit of an update for those of you

:47:40.:47:45.

who haven't been following the Maria de Sezar hen do saga. She turned up

:47:46.:47:54.

on a hen do and we invited her on, we had a chat and it went bananas

:47:55.:47:59.

and it's been watched, somebody told me, something like 16 million

:48:00.:48:04.

people. She's been doing interviews, her family have been asked, her

:48:05.:48:12.

fiance is and Belo Horizonte. Yesterday, her mother showed up and

:48:13.:48:18.

she gave us a beautiful invitation to the wedding on September 17. She

:48:19.:48:22.

said she would send her husband to say hello and he arrived, Ivan was

:48:23.:48:29.

here a few moments ago. He said his English wasn't good enough to come

:48:30.:48:34.

on TV. I tried to persuade him, he was a lovely man, cycling home. He

:48:35.:48:39.

thanked me for the coverage, his daughter has been excited. He says

:48:40.:48:44.

he has had interview requests and the rest of the family as well, it

:48:45.:48:49.

has been a big story over the last 24 hours, in Brazil as well, the top

:48:50.:48:54.

two on social media, in all of the papers. American journalists have

:48:55.:49:00.

been ringing up the family as well. The bottom of the story is that fail

:49:01.:49:05.

a nice family, she was having a hen do and has become a part of the

:49:06.:49:12.

magic -- they are a nice family. Hold on, right on cue, the binmen

:49:13.:49:20.

are back. Come on, boys, yes! You know it makes sense. Copacabinmen,

:49:21.:49:27.

what a magnificent job they do. They've been the stars of our

:49:28.:49:32.

coverage on BBC Four. Antony Worrall Thompson is here as well, this is

:49:33.:49:36.

like Ghostbusters when they cross the stream is! He's just going to

:49:37.:49:42.

come in now, here he is, doing his work. He's been training for nine

:49:43.:49:50.

days straight. What he doesn't realise, so many people in the UK

:49:51.:49:54.

are delighted to see him turn up every night, it puts a smile on

:49:55.:49:58.

their faces and perhaps without knowing it he has been the real

:49:59.:50:02.

superstar of our coverage. We have asked him for an interview but he

:50:03.:50:07.

says he is just here to interview and he says that his name is

:50:08.:50:15.

Raphael. Who knows? Jade Jones, we said that she won the Gold Medal and

:50:16.:50:19.

she is the favourite to defend that title. Before the Olympics we got a

:50:20.:50:21.

word with her. COMMENTATOR: You little beauty! The

:50:22.:50:37.

teenage kicking superstar from North Wales is the Olympic champion.

:50:38.:50:42.

That's it, the well champion. Is a lot of what you do today trying

:50:43.:50:57.

to programme the subconscious so that anything that happens, you can

:50:58.:51:04.

react? Yeah definitely, it is a totally new system, we haven't been

:51:05.:51:10.

used to going that way, it is harder to score. Going high on the punches,

:51:11.:51:14.

we've had to completely change our game. I watched you train, sparring,

:51:15.:51:23.

hitting each other, defending with pads, now I want to go to your house

:51:24.:51:28.

because you are housemates, you lived together, you are friends. Is

:51:29.:51:37.

that all right? Yeah. How is it, living together because you have

:51:38.:51:43.

literally come from a session? It is good that we are different, if it

:51:44.:51:48.

was a house of 57s I wouldn't get too close because they are opposite

:51:49.:51:55.

ends of the weight we can help each other out. It is just you two here?

:51:56.:52:05.

Yeah. The question is, why do you have two fridges? She is the

:52:06.:52:07.

heavyweight! LAUGHTER I can see you are definitely focused

:52:08.:52:20.

on Rio, lots of food. Can I see where you chill out? Jade, four

:52:21.:52:27.

years ago, London 2012, Olympic champion, did you expect that? It

:52:28.:52:33.

was like the journey going to the Olympics, it was fast, I came to the

:52:34.:52:40.

academy in 2010, only two years before and no one expected me to go

:52:41.:52:45.

to the Olympics. It went so fast and six months ago I was picked and I

:52:46.:52:50.

gave everything I had in training and I believed I could win, I was

:52:51.:52:55.

going there to win. But when I did it I felt a bit lost, so much

:52:56.:53:02.

pressure, I felt so lost. But now I'm in a good place, I'm just trying

:53:03.:53:09.

to get to do it again, really. Have you had to try and fall back in love

:53:10.:53:15.

with taekwondo? Yeah definitely. There are times, there is a hard

:53:16.:53:20.

loss, you don't want to do it any more, it is so hard and I'm not

:53:21.:53:27.

enjoying it. But I go back to why I did it as a kid, I love taekwondo

:53:28.:53:32.

and I wanted to win. You don't know why you want to win, you want to

:53:33.:53:37.

win. And Bianca, was it difficult, Jade winning a gold, she is

:53:38.:53:40.

obviously your friend, you are pleased she won but for you, you

:53:41.:53:46.

couldn't compete? It wasn't nice at all. We lived together and I was

:53:47.:53:51.

training with her and the next minute I broke my leg and Jade went

:53:52.:53:59.

and won the Olympics but I can't do nothing about that. It can happen. I

:54:00.:54:06.

can take it one way, I could hate her, but I take it the other way,

:54:07.:54:11.

look at what she's done, I can do the same thing. It feels even more

:54:12.:54:17.

special. This is our chance to both get a gold together. It could be a

:54:18.:54:26.

big few days for the taekwondo housemates. We will show you Jade

:54:27.:54:32.

Jones and Bianca over the next few days. That first semifinal in the 49

:54:33.:54:38.

kilo category. The other semifinal, who else goes through, this is him

:54:39.:54:49.

of South Korea. Let's go back for the second semifinal. COMMENTATOR:

:54:50.:55:00.

What a massive moment for Kim So-hui, the 21-year-old marching

:55:01.:55:07.

into the arena. The semifinal of the under 49 kilograms grouping.

:55:08.:55:15.

Yashmina Aziez, the French fighter. What a force she is. 25-year-old

:55:16.:55:30.

from Lyon. In terms of which of these fighters has the advantage in

:55:31.:55:33.

height, it must go to Yashmina Aziez. 5'8" compared to five feet

:55:34.:55:44.

five, Kim. We are looking at a three inch difference, about three

:55:45.:55:49.

centimetres. Fairly substantial. It may play a part. It will definitely

:55:50.:55:55.

play a part, as we've seen so far. Who's going to stand the tallest in

:55:56.:56:00.

this battle? Yashmina Aziez. Her coach there. Conrad Jenkins, the man

:56:01.:56:09.

in the middle, from Jamaica. I think this is a gym in this competition.

:56:10.:56:15.

The first day of taekwondo in Rio. -- this is a tremendous competition.

:56:16.:56:24.

Both of these women mean business, the final is at stake. Kim So-hui is

:56:25.:56:29.

in blue and Yashmina Aziez, her French opponent, front and centre.

:56:30.:56:40.

Kim So-hui is much quicker off the mark and good footwork. Both

:56:41.:56:48.

fighters getting the measure, working out the distance. The first

:56:49.:56:54.

attack coming from Yashmina Aziez of France.

:56:55.:57:04.

Kim So-hui is being very patient. As you said, the first attack. The

:57:05.:57:15.

footwork, so ballistic and athletic. -- balletic. Good fake as well,

:57:16.:57:27.

pretending to move. The Korean is so adept at changing the timing of the

:57:28.:57:36.

opponent by faking. Aziez missing. Kim coming in a bit more at the

:57:37.:57:41.

moment, I would like to see. Not challenging at all, she is waiting,

:57:42.:57:46.

looking for the opportunity. The shorter of the two, Kim So-hui would

:57:47.:57:50.

like to work from the close distance, so faking, trying to draw

:57:51.:57:54.

the taller fighter. A good opening so far for Aziez. A big occasion,

:57:55.:58:03.

the Olympic semifinal. Both fighters leaning back. It is Kim So-hui's

:58:04.:58:13.

footwork and her faking that is putting the pressure on Aziez who

:58:14.:58:20.

has worked the harder. Kim just staying far enough back out of

:58:21.:58:25.

range, looking to avoid any punishing kicks. The master of

:58:26.:58:32.

distance, Kim So-hui. Nothing to separate them on the scoreboard.

:58:33.:58:38.

Clash of styles there. I feel like Kim didn't really get into the first

:58:39.:58:42.

round. She's going to need to issue is going to score some points. Aziez

:58:43.:58:47.

is the one who was looking for the opportunity.

:58:48.:59:17.

Play to your strengths, advertising there. The French contingent, they

:59:18.:59:31.

have something to cheer about. Kim So-hui, so patient and calm come on

:59:32.:59:35.

the back foot. What will she produce here in the second round of the

:59:36.:59:40.

under 49 kilogram semifinal? Faking first and footwork burst, the style

:59:41.:59:47.

of the Korean. Aziez trying to come forward. The kick was well blocked.

:59:48.:59:59.

-- footwork first. Kim is trying to get inside, to get a bit closer.

:00:00.:00:05.

Trying to find her range. She isn't being allowed in very much. Aziez

:00:06.:00:13.

has the longer limbs, keeping Kim So-hui on the back foot. Intense

:00:14.:00:21.

battle so far. A battle for territory. Kim So-hui firing in a

:00:22.:00:30.

little turning kick. Eyes wide from Aziez, she's having to focus

:00:31.:00:31.

resolutely here. Olympic final at stake, no one wants

:00:32.:00:38.

to make a mistake. Difficult for Kim So-hui now to get

:00:39.:01:09.

onto the front foot. An understandable impasse here. The

:01:10.:01:17.

Olympic Games final beckons. Good footwork from Kim So-hui. Good

:01:18.:01:22.

response from Aziez. So close. Aziez is beginning to miss a few

:01:23.:01:49.

here. You have to wonder whether this work by Kim, who is just moving

:01:50.:01:56.

backwards and forwards, leaves as is doing all the hard work. She is now

:01:57.:02:01.

the more fatigued fighter. Absolutely. Kim So-hui is happy to

:02:02.:02:07.

put the pressure on and draw out the response from Aziez. For that

:02:08.:02:13.

reason, she has found that back leg turning kick on two occasions.

:02:14.:02:17.

Hasn't found the scoreboard, but getting closer. As you say, much

:02:18.:02:28.

management is so crucial, using that energy. But we know Aziez has the

:02:29.:02:42.

flexibility. Last bit of encouragement both coaches.

:02:43.:02:51.

Who is going to be on the podium later? So much to be decided here.

:02:52.:03:05.

Do you think they will be thinking about the final already, or are they

:03:06.:03:08.

focused on winning this? Kim So-hui again going back to that

:03:09.:03:29.

patient style, try to shut down the moment.

:03:30.:03:39.

They are cancelling each other out at the moment. A mistake from Aziez

:03:40.:03:48.

almost left the door open. You mentioned the energy expended by

:03:49.:04:13.

Aziez. She is under pressure. There is the back leg turning click again.

:04:14.:04:17.

-- turning click. A consistent pattern emerging. There

:04:18.:04:32.

is a sudden death round. Whoever scored first would win, but you

:04:33.:04:37.

would fancy the same here as we get into the last stages. The time is

:04:38.:04:47.

ticking away here. Who is going to commit? They will

:04:48.:04:59.

have two commit to a sudden death round now. Whoever scores the first

:05:00.:05:09.

point is into the Olympic final. Change of tactics now in terms of

:05:10.:05:13.

the type of kick they choose to go for. It is very much on the length

:05:14.:05:19.

of kick. Every kick is a different length and covers a different

:05:20.:05:22.

distance. You have to pick the right one. Kim So-hui has been defensive

:05:23.:05:27.

and hesitant. Does she go for it now? Does she stick or twist? Aziez

:05:28.:05:33.

has the flexibility. Don't discount the punches as well. Conrad Jenkins

:05:34.:05:44.

separates them. Gold medal territory now. Well blocked by Kim So-hui in

:05:45.:05:54.

blue. Kim So-hui almost scored. Lovely

:05:55.:06:16.

block from Yashmina Aziez, the French fighter. This has been so

:06:17.:06:21.

difficult to separate the two of them.

:06:22.:06:33.

As is really putting on the pressure now. Kim So-hui is beginning to rock

:06:34.:06:38.

under the pressure. Back leg turning kick from Kim

:06:39.:06:57.

So-hui, and she is into the Olympic Games final. Composure, patients and

:06:58.:07:08.

precision. That little power shot underneath the guard. Excellent from

:07:09.:07:12.

Kim So-hui. She played a very patient waiting game, and it paid

:07:13.:07:17.

off. There you go. More taekwondo for you

:07:18.:07:21.

over the next few days on BBC Four. In a moment, we shall be live at the

:07:22.:07:25.

table tennis. We promised you some amazing action, China taking on

:07:26.:07:29.

Japan in a gold medal match for the men's team event. They play five

:07:30.:07:36.

different matches across the different doubles and singles. We

:07:37.:07:40.

will join them shortly. But we have another guest, live in the beach

:07:41.:07:45.

bureau on BBC Four. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to

:07:46.:07:50.

Deb Murray, Samantha Murray's mum. Those of you who remember 2012,

:07:51.:07:55.

Samantha Murray was one of our pent athletes who won silver four years

:07:56.:07:59.

ago, and she starts the modern pentathlon tomorrow. Let's get an

:08:00.:08:02.

insight into the mother's point of view. How are you feeling before the

:08:03.:08:09.

first of a few big day tomorrow? Very excited and very proud, full of

:08:10.:08:13.

anticipation. We can't wait to see what will happen. Anything can

:08:14.:08:18.

happen in pentathlon. It is such an unpredictable sport. You have the

:08:19.:08:24.

unknown element of the horses, and you have so many competitors, whose

:08:25.:08:32.

form can vary from day to day depending on many different aspects.

:08:33.:08:38.

So it is a really nerve-wracking experience. We can take you back to

:08:39.:08:46.

four years ago. This was when your daughter crossed the line four years

:08:47.:08:50.

ago for the silver. You will come into shot in a minute for a hug.

:08:51.:08:54.

What if that mother- daughter moment like? In London as well, it must

:08:55.:09:01.

have been incredible. It was just amazing. In front of a home crowd

:09:02.:09:10.

are so many spectators and so much support, I don't think you could

:09:11.:09:15.

ever match that again. Here in Rio, I know there have been issues. Yes,

:09:16.:09:22.

people have been watching and saying, why are people not going to

:09:23.:09:25.

the events? We have been speaking about this a lot to some locals.

:09:26.:09:30.

There are various reasons. One is the cost of the tickets. One is the

:09:31.:09:34.

fact that if it is not football, it is hard to get Brazilians enthused

:09:35.:09:39.

about things, and the locals have also told us that sometimes, we have

:09:40.:09:42.

a very British viewpoint on these things. Here, if Brazilians feel

:09:43.:09:46.

they are not going to win, they are not interested. It is all those

:09:47.:09:50.

things combined. That could be why some events have not been well

:09:51.:09:56.

attended. It might be interesting tomorrow, because Marquez, who won

:09:57.:10:00.

the bronze in London, is a strong contender. So the Brazilians may get

:10:01.:10:05.

behind her. We have been talking a lot about getting the next

:10:06.:10:09.

generation into things. Remind us of how the modern pentathlon works. The

:10:10.:10:14.

fencing is the first event, which starts tomorrow. Yes, the fencing is

:10:15.:10:22.

tomorrow. And the competitor, there are 36 competitors and they all fans

:10:23.:10:28.

each other. Each hit the point. Then you accumulate points throughout the

:10:29.:10:33.

rest of the day. Then you go on the swim. Ordinarily, the five events

:10:34.:10:38.

are in day, but in Rio, because of the lighting and the length of the

:10:39.:10:43.

event, they put the fencing on one day and the rest of the elements on

:10:44.:10:50.

the Friday. On Friday, you carry on with the swim, 200 metres freestyle.

:10:51.:10:55.

Samantha is a strong swimmer, so we are hoping for a good swim, possibly

:10:56.:11:01.

an Olympic record. We will have to see. A bit of pressure! After the

:11:02.:11:09.

swimming, you go onto the riding. And it is unknown horse. It is 12

:11:10.:11:15.

jumps. You get 20 minutes to warm up. During that warm-up, you can

:11:16.:11:21.

jump the horse four times, and that's it. So anyone who knows about

:11:22.:11:25.

horses knows that that is quite a challenge and you have to use a lot

:11:26.:11:30.

of skill. We have seen Charlotte Dujardin, and she has had a long

:11:31.:11:35.

term relationship with Valegro. They know the horse and the horse feels

:11:36.:11:38.

safe, which helps when you are trying to get that horse to do the

:11:39.:11:44.

business. Absolutely, it is a completely different relationship.

:11:45.:11:47.

You have the bond with the horse very quickly and make judgments. So

:11:48.:11:53.

it is skilful and tactical. Once you have completed your eventing round,

:11:54.:11:58.

you then go onto the combined run shoot event. The run shoot event is

:11:59.:12:03.

shooting with a laser pistol. It used to be an actual air pistol in

:12:04.:12:10.

the olden days. But now it is a laser pistol. That is to encourage

:12:11.:12:15.

grassroots participation. Obviously, a laser pistol is much safer. And it

:12:16.:12:24.

is good fun. So you come the 300 metre run with the laser pistol

:12:25.:12:30.

shooting. -- you combine them. You visit the shooting range four times

:12:31.:12:36.

in the course of your three K run. And your heart rate increases. That

:12:37.:12:40.

is the skill, you have do make your heart rate slowed as you approach

:12:41.:12:45.

the shooting range. I am amazed at how Samantha got into this. Was

:12:46.:12:50.

anyone in your family involved? We have been talking about getting into

:12:51.:12:54.

sport. How do you think, today I am going to be a modern pentathlete?

:12:55.:12:59.

Modern pad tabs on is a very quirky sport, but it is such good fun

:13:00.:13:04.

because it is so varied -- modern pentathlon. Sam was always a very

:13:05.:13:09.

active child. I am sure lots of people have active children at home.

:13:10.:13:13.

She used to go to running club and swimming club. And her grandma kept

:13:14.:13:21.

ponies, so she always messed about with ponies. Somebody approached her

:13:22.:13:29.

at a talent day and said you can run and swim really well. You know how

:13:30.:13:37.

to ride. Why not take up the other elements of fencing and shooting,

:13:38.:13:41.

and you could be a modern pentathlete? And it was at the time

:13:42.:13:46.

when Stacy Cook had just won gold in 2000 at the Sydney Olympics, which

:13:47.:13:49.

was the first time women had been involved in the sport. And Sam went

:13:50.:13:56.

along to this presentation and saw a poster of this defeat cook. She had

:13:57.:14:02.

the presentation and said, I want to be like that lady. She looks

:14:03.:14:09.

amazing. Steffi Cook is now part of the commentary for these Games.

:14:10.:14:14.

Exactly, so for Sam to meet her hero has been great. You don't decide

:14:15.:14:21.

you're going to be in pentathlon, it is something you acquire the skills

:14:22.:14:25.

to become. If you are a good runner and swimmer, look at the other

:14:26.:14:29.

disciplines, which are very technical, and you could also be a

:14:30.:14:34.

modern pentathlete. I was saying to my husband Tom Samantha's life as an

:14:35.:14:40.

athlete has taken her all over the world and you get to come to amazing

:14:41.:14:44.

places like this, whether beach is like sugar macro we have spent a lot

:14:45.:14:50.

of time on the beach, we know how good it is! The reason it is so

:14:51.:14:54.

smooth is because of the Beachcomber, but I will explain that

:14:55.:15:00.

later. It is an amazing place. So you have a fantastic life where you

:15:01.:15:04.

train as an athlete, you do varied sports that you enjoy and you get to

:15:05.:15:08.

meet wonderful people like yourself. Steady on! Let me ask you about the

:15:09.:15:21.

night before. Who feels it more on a night like to make? The competition

:15:22.:15:31.

starts at two o'clock, ten in the morning in Rio. I am all right now,

:15:32.:15:37.

but tomorrow I will probably be a total wreck. In London, we got to

:15:38.:15:42.

the combined event, and I couldn't actually watch. I was in the stadium

:15:43.:15:51.

and I was crouched on the floor. I couldn't look. And one of Sam's

:15:52.:15:57.

friends who was with her said to me, get up, she's about to win the

:15:58.:15:59.

silver medal! And made me watch. It is great because you are

:16:00.:16:11.

wondering passed, your husband came over and said, that is the mother of

:16:12.:16:18.

Samantha Murray. Pub quiz, she was the last Team GB medallist at the

:16:19.:16:24.

London Games, number 65 out of 65. That's right, a Silver Medal. Let's

:16:25.:16:29.

say hello to Steve as well. He's sorting his hair out. Nice to see

:16:30.:16:35.

you, I am Dan, this is your wife! From your perspective, is it a

:16:36.:16:42.

concern, are you cool, can you watch? Over the years, Debra has put

:16:43.:16:46.

the hard work in, clearly with Samantha. Yes, stand there and see

:16:47.:16:54.

what happens. Hope you have a fantastic day tomorrow and the day

:16:55.:17:02.

after, enjoy the fencing. A big clap to our Olympic parents. People

:17:03.:17:06.

probably think you are Gold Medal winners. I will milk it! Thank you

:17:07.:17:12.

and all the best two Samantha, we'll have to make sure that we cover it

:17:13.:17:19.

properly. Thank you so much. Samantha Murray will go tomorrow.

:17:20.:17:25.

10pm here, to lay your time, the first event of the modern

:17:26.:17:29.

pentathlon. Silver in London and she's had some good years, world

:17:30.:17:36.

champion in 2014 and in 2016 as part of Team GB she was the world silver

:17:37.:17:41.

medallist. The pedigree is there and hopefully she gets in the medals.

:17:42.:17:46.

Shall we go to some table tennis? This is the men's team Gold Medal

:17:47.:17:52.

matches, that is the best way to describe it, two of the great

:17:53.:17:57.

nations, China against Japan. China winning the first match, the best of

:17:58.:18:14.

five, we will join it now. Mizutani from Japan against his Chinese

:18:15.:18:23.

opponent. Match two. Let's join our commentary team. COMMENTATOR:

:18:24.:18:34.

Certainly looks like it, and Mizutani, the opposite, a lot of

:18:35.:18:36.

positive body language from him. On his feet, applauding Mizutani.

:18:37.:19:00.

Between them they've got the tactics right here. The manner in which

:19:01.:19:07.

Mizutani is playing, not afraid to have a go, topspin against topspin

:19:08.:19:16.

and he didn't back off. He had a weakness previously, allowing his

:19:17.:19:20.

opponent to dominate but here, he's holding his ground a lot more.

:19:21.:19:21.

Slugging it out with Xu Xin. He hasn't missed very many. High

:19:22.:19:41.

level of aggression that he's been playing with. Xu Xin just spinning

:19:42.:19:51.

the ball the bit more, not quite as fast as in the previous point,

:19:52.:19:54.

slowing it down, heavy topspin. Nice couple of points, giving Xu Xin

:19:55.:20:17.

a bit more hope in this second game. Mizutani has gone off the boil a

:20:18.:20:41.

little bit. Using the reverse backhand really well, brushing up

:20:42.:20:46.

the ball. The lead now, for Mizutani, down to one point.

:20:47.:21:01.

Good job, into the body. What a comeback here from Xu Xin. Drawing

:21:02.:21:09.

level, 5-5. Just missing the forehand topspin,

:21:10.:21:43.

Mizutani. The Chinese are so mentally tough, you look at their

:21:44.:21:49.

fitness and skill levels. 5-2 down, a lot of people would have lost

:21:50.:21:51.

confidence, but Xu Xin... That's a nice stroke back. Stopping

:21:52.:22:11.

what was a haemorrhage of points against him.

:22:12.:22:20.

After losing five in a row, coming up with that to level it at 6-6

:22:21.:22:26.

after having taken the first game. Good return of serve, reading the

:22:27.:22:48.

spin and pushing it back ever so tight. Mizutani tried to take

:22:49.:22:54.

initiative but it was such a good return, very difficult for him.

:22:55.:23:14.

That was a great serve, the second bounce was going to be around the

:23:15.:23:23.

baseline, Xu Xin didn't know whether to play long. In the end he has to

:23:24.:23:31.

flick over the table. Mizutani coming in with the forehand topspin

:23:32.:23:36.

down the line. Close one to call, 7-7.

:23:37.:24:09.

That was such an important point for Mizutani.

:24:10.:24:18.

He let it drop too long. Time-out. Clearly this isn't anything to do

:24:19.:24:30.

with momentum because there is no momentum in Xu Xin's favour at the

:24:31.:24:36.

moment, he clearly wants to talk to him about tactics and how to get in

:24:37.:24:39.

front of the topspin. Interesting time to call this.

:24:40.:24:59.

Perhaps it's because Mizutani was able to seal the opening game in a

:25:00.:25:03.

tight point for point type situation. To be honest, it's a

:25:04.:25:13.

relaxed and -- it's a reflection that the coach believes this is in

:25:14.:25:18.

doubt. Why else would he have called the time-out? There's no momentum.

:25:19.:25:28.

He just wants to reinforce the importance of play, how he can

:25:29.:25:29.

dominate the rally. Returning from the time-out. Very

:25:30.:25:47.

tight stages of the second game. Mizutani of Japan, having taken the

:25:48.:25:53.

first, now with a one point fatwa and teach -- one point and --

:25:54.:26:09.

advantage. That was a peach of a return, the placement was

:26:10.:26:13.

exceptional. Outright winner on the return of serve. Xu Xin again going

:26:14.:26:18.

around the backhand to play his forehand. Mizutani, two points from

:26:19.:26:26.

taking the game. Reverse backhand, the return of

:26:27.:26:47.

serve setting up the point that Xu Xin. Of course it will be Xu Xin to

:26:48.:26:57.

serves at the end of the game. Very big point coming up now.

:26:58.:27:08.

What a response from Xu Xin. You must admire how positively they are

:27:09.:27:18.

playing. This catches the edge of the table, you can see. Catching the

:27:19.:27:25.

edge of the table. He acknowledges his good fortune. By the finest of

:27:26.:27:33.

margins it is 9-9. He did well, Mizutani, returning the

:27:34.:27:57.

serve well, the strong forehand topspin, forcing Xu Xin away from

:27:58.:28:04.

the table and now we have game point for the 2-0 lead for Japan.

:28:05.:28:33.

That is terrific play from Mizutani. 11-9, he clinches the second game,

:28:34.:28:47.

it is 2-0. Really holding his nerve in the closing stages of the second

:28:48.:28:54.

game. Playing aggressively, a lot of self belief. There is the

:28:55.:29:01.

celebration, going to the 2-0 lead. The Japanese coach, he is delighted.

:29:02.:29:21.

Questions will be asked of Xu Xin. Mizutani could be the thorn in the

:29:22.:29:27.

side of the Chinese team. I would love to see the game between

:29:28.:29:31.

Mizutani and Ma Long, if we get to that stop very impressive

:29:32.:29:37.

performance by the 27-year-old. And the edge goes to Xu Xin. Hasn't

:29:38.:30:44.

had a lot of luck in this match. It has gone against him, but this time

:30:45.:30:53.

he gets it. It was two reverse backhand topspin 's that have won

:30:54.:30:55.

him the first two points. Super defence from Xu Xin, way back

:30:56.:31:09.

from the table. Heavy topspin from Xu Xin, Mizutani

:31:10.:31:49.

not getting his racket over the top. Got to get the bat over the ball to

:31:50.:31:51.

compensate for the spin. This time, good fortune favours Xu

:31:52.:32:17.

Xin. He was at full stretch there. Somehow managed to get his bat on

:32:18.:32:21.

the ball and then good fortune stepped in as the ball trickled over

:32:22.:32:26.

the net. Look at that, he is almost diving, looks like a goalkeeper

:32:27.:32:29.

going to save a penalty. Quite a turnaround in this third

:32:30.:32:38.

game. Two reverse backhand topspin --

:32:39.:33:14.

topspins. A good push from Mizutani. It is not

:33:15.:33:40.

often you see a push going as fast as that one. Took Xu Xin by

:33:41.:33:42.

surprise. The ball was a bit lower for Xu Xin.

:33:43.:34:09.

We have the Chinese women's team down, supporting the men.

:34:10.:34:30.

A bit of cat and mouse at the beginning of the point. Xu Xin

:34:31.:34:41.

launches into his trademark shot, overhit it.

:34:42.:34:56.

Top edge of the racket, slightly mistimed it. It looks like a

:34:57.:35:04.

terrible mess when the ball flies off, but it is just a fraction of a

:35:05.:35:09.

second out in the timing. The ball hits the top of the racket.

:35:10.:35:23.

A very different game, this one. The other two were very close, point for

:35:24.:35:32.

point. But Xu Xin now has a big lead.

:35:33.:35:55.

Rapid-fire rally, setting up game points for Xu Xin to get one game

:35:56.:36:05.

back. Xu Xin taking the third game.

:36:06.:36:20.

Japan's Mizutani leading 2-1. Best-of-5 matches. Interesting in

:36:21.:37:08.

that third game. Xu Xin got off to the start, won the first three or

:37:09.:37:12.

four points, and then it was one-way traffic. Mizutani has to forget

:37:13.:37:17.

about that third game and get back to how he played in the first two

:37:18.:37:21.

games. I am sure that is what the coach is telling him. The start of

:37:22.:37:33.

the fourth game is all important for both players. Xu Xin, of course, has

:37:34.:37:44.

to win the next two games. Mizutani just needs one of them. I thought Xu

:37:45.:37:50.

Xin played his best game of the three but arguably, Mizutani took

:37:51.:37:55.

pressure off of it. He wandered away from the table and didn't open the

:37:56.:37:58.

strongly as he did in the first two games. But I am sure the coach will

:37:59.:38:02.

be advising him accordingly. So much movement on that ball. It is

:38:03.:38:42.

a blow to Xu Xin to lose a point like that.

:38:43.:38:54.

Xu Xin returning with a reverse backhand topspin. Very skilful.

:38:55.:39:20.

Brilliant. First topspin on the diagonal. Mizutani whips it down the

:39:21.:39:37.

line. Great tactical play. In terms of that third game,

:39:38.:39:52.

Mizutani seemed to have a little lapse. He has been brilliant at many

:39:53.:40:00.

stages throughout this match. Even though he lost the point, I still

:40:01.:40:05.

felt he was trying to be positive. In the third game, I thought he held

:40:06.:40:10.

back a bit and played by his very high standards just a fraction

:40:11.:40:15.

negative. That is perfect, that is what he has to do. He has to be

:40:16.:40:20.

strong behind the service, keep the pressure on Xu Xin.

:40:21.:40:43.

The other interesting thing psychologically, if Mizutani can

:40:44.:40:49.

pull off this win, it would be remarkable. But then Xu Xin would

:40:50.:40:53.

have to go into the doubles with a defeat on his mind. It may unsettle

:40:54.:40:58.

the Chinese doubles pair. Here we are, talking about China being

:40:59.:41:03.

almost unbeatable, and Japan now find themselves in a very healthy

:41:04.:41:09.

situation. So much pressure on Xu Xin, with the immense responsibility

:41:10.:41:16.

of playing this singles. Didn't play in the singles event here at the

:41:17.:41:24.

Olympics. Started the tournament in this team event.

:41:25.:41:44.

Coming up with the goods in that point. Great slow motion of that

:41:45.:41:59.

forehand topspin. Good footwork to get around the backhand.

:42:00.:42:17.

A bit of good fortune for Xu Xin. Just caught the top of the net,

:42:18.:42:33.

trickled over. Massive points right here.

:42:34.:42:51.

Mizutani has to match Xu Xin for mental toughness here. I know the

:42:52.:42:59.

Chinese are tough. They have proved it time and time again. Being able

:43:00.:43:08.

to produce those sorts of shots in tight situations, under incredible

:43:09.:43:09.

pressure. You just feel the momentum now has

:43:10.:43:32.

shifted to Xu Xin. I think we are going to have a time-out called. Of

:43:33.:43:44.

course, if Xu Xin wins, then we go into the fifth and final game. That

:43:45.:43:51.

really will be pressure for both players. It is a lot of pressure

:43:52.:43:53.

now. Just a slight acknowledgement from

:43:54.:44:09.

Mizutani. He knows he was a bit fortunate. I suspect overall, the

:44:10.:44:20.

luck has been evenly distributed throughout this match.

:44:21.:44:49.

Oh, my goodness! Total commitment from Mizutani. It was good tactics

:44:50.:44:58.

from the Japanese player. That was the best shot of this match so far.

:44:59.:45:06.

Look at the side spin, taking the ball out even wider to Mizutani's

:45:07.:45:13.

forehand, but Mizutani didn't even bother to try. He was hoping to make

:45:14.:45:17.

a winner on that return. It wasn't to be.

:45:18.:45:40.

Xu Xin holding up under pressure here. Shrug off the shoulders from

:45:41.:45:50.

Mizutani. Trying to loosen up a little bit.

:45:51.:46:07.

Again, Xu Xin in with that rocket forehand topspin down the line.

:46:08.:46:16.

Really responded in this situation, coming up with some of his best

:46:17.:46:22.

play, deep in the fourth game. That's a good backhand. Going under

:46:23.:46:43.

the forehand side to play the backhand. Gives himself a slight

:46:44.:46:51.

lifeline here, but he's three points adrift, Xu Xin, with his final serve

:46:52.:46:53.

in the sequence of two. He was going after it. 9-5, he was

:46:54.:47:29.

up, now it is 9-7 and Mizutani with two serves. What a time to take the

:47:30.:47:40.

points with the Serbs. Two serves. -- serves.

:47:41.:47:45.

The reverse backhand, a lot of wrist going into that shot. Great

:47:46.:47:56.

composure from Xu Xin. Extraordinary effort from Xu Xin.

:47:57.:48:19.

Taking the fourth game, 11th-7, drawing level at 2-2, we will go

:48:20.:48:23.

into a decider. So, what a match. Xu Xin and

:48:24.:49:19.

Mizutani. I think the start of this deciding game is going to be

:49:20.:49:26.

crucial. Of course we must remember that Xu Xin lost the first two

:49:27.:49:33.

Games, 12-10 and 11-9, has won 11-3 and 11-7, so arguably the momentum

:49:34.:49:40.

is with him but it's amazing how many players bring it back to 2-2,

:49:41.:49:44.

you think they are going to run away with it and it doesn't happen. It's

:49:45.:49:48.

about their mental approach to the game. I still think that the

:49:49.:49:55.

gentleman is an -- the gentleman who is on the screen is the favourite.

:49:56.:50:02.

If Mizutani makes a good start, Japan can get back into this final.

:50:03.:50:16.

Good reaction from Xu Xin, after winning the opening point of the

:50:17.:50:24.

fifth and final deciding game. He wants to keep the momentum of having

:50:25.:50:30.

won the last two Games to level the match.

:50:31.:50:47.

Just launched into the backhand topspin. Xu Xin created a point

:50:48.:50:57.

winning situation, creating the rally so that Mizutani was away from

:50:58.:51:02.

the table. Look how far away he is. The backhand topspin. Big point,

:51:03.:51:10.

psychologically keeping him in the fifth and final game in the second

:51:11.:51:11.

match. What defence from Mizutani, early in

:51:12.:51:30.

the rally. But Xu Xin was able to put it away. What Mizutani mustn't

:51:31.:51:41.

think is that he won the previous point away from the table, it was

:51:42.:51:46.

wonderful to see but for every five points like that he's only going to

:51:47.:51:51.

win one out of the five. He can't rely on that, he must get close to

:51:52.:51:53.

the table. Exactly, taking the ball early,

:51:54.:52:09.

putting Xu Xin under a bit of pressure, he missed time the reverse

:52:10.:52:13.

backhand, getting the edge of his bat and look at the scoreboard, 2-2

:52:14.:52:18.

in Games and points, it couldn't be closer.

:52:19.:52:35.

How did Xu Xin stay in that point? If you see the replay, Xu Xin

:52:36.:52:45.

gambled, he ran around the backhand, there he goes, and Mizutani put it

:52:46.:52:51.

there. If he had gone down the line the way he has been doing, he would

:52:52.:53:00.

have won the point. Liu Guoliang, you'd think he was playing in the

:53:01.:53:05.

match! It's the Olympic final, it means everything. Liu Guoliang

:53:06.:53:11.

there, Olympic champion and world champion himself.

:53:12.:53:27.

The players will change ends when the first player makes five points.

:53:28.:53:35.

Xu Xin will be hoping it is at 5-2, it would be a big psychological

:53:36.:53:39.

boost for him to change ends with a 3-point lead. Mizutani needs a

:53:40.:53:46.

couple points in the opening points of the final game.

:53:47.:54:08.

Xu Xin, each point building pressure on Mizutani. Time-out called, 5-2.

:54:09.:54:20.

Xu Xin, the deciding game. 5-2, changing ends, the time-out. I think

:54:21.:54:26.

it's a good call because the momentum is definitely with Xu Xin.

:54:27.:54:31.

So a chance to regroup, take a break. Try and give him the advice

:54:32.:54:37.

that he requires. I think he knows what he has to do. Xu Xin is just a

:54:38.:54:44.

great player. You know what you have to do, but it is sustaining it to

:54:45.:54:49.

win the points, that effort, you can see that the strain is telling.

:54:50.:54:56.

Mizutani is looking a bit at a loss after those two points, looking

:54:57.:55:04.

skyward. Interesting to see Liu Guoliang's reaction to one of those

:55:05.:55:08.

points, he knows that this is a pressure point in the final, he

:55:09.:55:12.

knows that if Xu Xin loses, they will go to the doubles with Xu Xin

:55:13.:55:17.

knowing he has lost his singles. Even though he is 5-2 up, it is a

:55:18.:55:23.

pivotal moment in the final. What an encounter this is. The result is by

:55:24.:55:32.

no means a done deal. Mizutani is trailing 5-2 in the deciding game.

:55:33.:55:44.

Serve drifting long. Xu Xin pounced on it and what a strong forehand

:55:45.:55:58.

topspin return of serve. The body language from Mizutani, talking to

:55:59.:56:05.

himself, looking up, not looking nearly as confident. Four point

:56:06.:56:10.

advantage, Xu Xin. He must focus everything on the next point, not

:56:11.:56:15.

think about the fact that he was 2-0 up. That's a good return, keeping it

:56:16.:56:23.

tight. Xu Xin launched himself into it but it forced the error.

:56:24.:56:34.

This second match is a classic. It has had twists and turns. Are we

:56:35.:57:05.

about to see another? Looked like Mizutani was going to win, 2-0 up,

:57:06.:57:12.

Xu Xin wins the next two, takes the lead and now Mizutani is coming back

:57:13.:57:13.

at him. Tremendous stuff. That was a brave return of serve

:57:14.:57:28.

from Xu Xin. The long post, I was thinking he was going short or the

:57:29.:57:33.

flick. That's probably why I wasn't any good! Grapeshot, the depth, and

:57:34.:57:39.

the reaction from Mizutani says it all. -- great shot.

:57:40.:57:52.

It was the great reversed topspin from Xu Xin and then Mizutani

:57:53.:58:01.

stepped around with the counter forehand topspin. There's the

:58:02.:58:05.

reverse and there is the countertop spent. Mizutani, keeping his focus,

:58:06.:58:11.

trying to play as positively as he can. This can still be won by

:58:12.:58:24.

Mizutani. It's going to be tough. He looks a little bit stressed. You

:58:25.:58:28.

don't see that very often, Liu Guoliang. He's back on his feet, up

:58:29.:58:33.

and down like a jack in the box in the corner.

:58:34.:58:56.

Xu Xin keeping his composure. 8-5 in the deciding game.

:58:57.:59:29.

And the short play won by Mizutani, who now has two serves to come. What

:59:30.:59:42.

a time to take two points with your serves. Levelling the deciding game

:59:43.:59:50.

at 8-8. Can he do it? The first serve is coming up.

:59:51.:00:10.

Good play from Xu Xin, spinning the ball to three times and then he

:00:11.:00:15.

launches the rocket, coming forward with the reaction. Spinning up and

:00:16.:00:20.

then kicks. Good placement into the body of Xu

:00:21.:01:00.

Xin. The problem now for Mizutani, as he has to return the Xu Xin

:01:01.:01:05.

service, interesting to see the servers that Xu Xin will come out

:01:06.:01:09.

with. It will be looking to get a good top-spin behind the serve. I

:01:10.:01:13.

would be surprised to see a long and fast serve, but who knows?

:01:14.:01:43.

What a well-placed top-spin? Into the backhand. Much to the delay --

:01:44.:01:54.

much to the delight of the team in the corner. Lots of movement on that

:01:55.:02:02.

bench. Thrilled to see their man arrived at match points. 10-7.

:02:03.:02:39.

Mizutani, of course, now has his Serbs to come. He needs to be brave

:02:40.:02:57.

and he needs to be positive behind the server.

:02:58.:03:09.

It is all about what he can deliver right here, Mizutani. Two match

:03:10.:03:18.

points. That was a weak return of service. I

:03:19.:03:42.

do not like to say that about a world-class player such as Xu Xin

:03:43.:03:46.

but it looked up and it was mid-table and dispatched into his

:03:47.:03:51.

body. One match point remaining for Xu Xin. Talk about twists and turns.

:03:52.:04:17.

He has done it. He held his ground and stayed close to the table. He

:04:18.:04:25.

played positive table tennis, and he has reaped the reward. Showing the

:04:26.:04:33.

belief out here, Mizutani, staving off match points, staying alive in

:04:34.:04:40.

this match. What you sense is a pivotal match in this final. 2-2,

:04:41.:04:50.

10-10. Spin, top-spin, how clever was that

:04:51.:05:15.

from Mizutani? The ball dropped over the side of that able, he spun up

:05:16.:05:20.

the back of the ball and he brushed and the ball was fizzing with

:05:21.:05:26.

top-spin. After saving match points against him, Mizutani arrives at a

:05:27.:05:28.

match point of his own. He has gone down on his knees.

:05:29.:05:51.

Celebration for Mizutani, pulling off a huge upset here. Tense times

:05:52.:06:00.

at the end of that fifth game, he takes it 12-10 in the decider.

:06:01.:06:10.

Some brilliant table tennis action there and we will return to the

:06:11.:06:16.

gold-medal match with China taking on Japan. When- one so far and the

:06:17.:06:22.

men's double is up next. We are back on the beach. More excitement

:06:23.:06:27.

because the Copaca- binmen are back. Can you see them under the palm

:06:28.:06:31.

trees? Hopefully they will be strolling past us soon. It is guest

:06:32.:06:38.

night on BBC Four. Let me introduce you to Kenny and Andy? Can you tell

:06:39.:06:48.

when they are from? Where'er you originally from? Falkirk. Bathgate.

:06:49.:06:56.

You are wearing a kilt every day, explain why. We wondered what would

:06:57.:07:01.

be more fun, we follow the football as a Tartan Army so we thought we

:07:02.:07:05.

would come here and do it for real and we packed to kilts and steep

:07:06.:07:09.

pairs of boots and 21 T-shirts, one for each day. Yes, we have beachwear

:07:10.:07:16.

and kilts are matters it. How has it gone down in Rio? You do get a few

:07:17.:07:21.

looks here! Even here. The first couple of days it took three or four

:07:22.:07:25.

days to go down because it was photographs all the time but it is

:07:26.:07:28.

great because you are meeting Argentinians in Spanish and French

:07:29.:07:31.

and Japanese and they are getting pictures taken with us and we have

:07:32.:07:34.

pictures taken with them which is great. People watching back at home,

:07:35.:07:38.

there was a lot of talk of empty stadium and people coming because

:07:39.:07:43.

they were concerned the violence and security. You are saying how much

:07:44.:07:48.

you have been enjoying it, you seen of that? None whatsoever. There are

:07:49.:07:52.

places we have been to a decided not to stay very long but you can get

:07:53.:07:59.

that in London so it's not bad. You walk up and down here and there is

:08:00.:08:02.

loads of security and everyone feel safe, I feel safe. Ticket wise, not

:08:03.:08:10.

been great. Talk about the tickets. Amulets have you been to so far? Ten

:08:11.:08:18.

maybe. What's been the highlight? The road cycling is that highlight

:08:19.:08:23.

and we choose the highest in the steepest hill and we were there for

:08:24.:08:27.

the whole nine hours he met all the Spanish fans who were crazy for

:08:28.:08:30.

their cycling and they had flags out and everything and the highlight was

:08:31.:08:33.

running alongside Geraint Thomas in the final lap and shouting at him

:08:34.:08:36.

and motivating him and getting in going and I thought I did a great

:08:37.:08:40.

job and I was told five minutes later that he went round the corner

:08:41.:08:44.

and crashed and I felt really bad and I thought it was my motivation.

:08:45.:08:50.

You got into pumped up! I ran beside Chris Froome in my kilt and he

:08:51.:08:53.

looked as though it wasn't happening. And he asked me how

:08:54.:09:02.

Geraint Hughes was doing and I told him it was second. I run along side

:09:03.:09:08.

Chris Froome only talk to me! That is a pretty special experience. What

:09:09.:09:15.

have you lined up? We have tickets for Saturday night and the Mo Farah

:09:16.:09:22.

race. Hold on, the binmen are back! Nice to see you! Al, they are busy

:09:23.:09:28.

now. There you go! Wheel was get away from the Copaca- binmen. As you

:09:29.:09:37.

well know, these guys are stars. You are saying about tickets and trying

:09:38.:09:41.

to get to events in the next few days. We're going to athletics on

:09:42.:09:46.

Saturday to see Mel as if he can do it again it would be amazing. We

:09:47.:09:50.

will try our best to get tickets for hockey on Friday night but they were

:09:51.:09:53.

sold out on the website but we will keep trying and hopefully we will

:09:54.:09:57.

get them. There is a plan to get them but you are not sure yet. Yes,

:09:58.:10:01.

we did the same with rugby sevens and went on the first day and stayed

:10:02.:10:05.

in the second and went in the afternoon and then we had some GB

:10:06.:10:09.

jackets and we stayed for three to the light and session, told with the

:10:10.:10:14.

team. Security said it was time to go on we said we were waiting for

:10:15.:10:19.

the team and they went off and left our fund an hour later the gates

:10:20.:10:23.

opened and we strolled in and watch the evening session with friends and

:10:24.:10:27.

family, so thanks to Aldi for the great jackets! Other superstores are

:10:28.:10:34.

available! I was about to say that myself! Andy Murray, as well, you're

:10:35.:10:39.

both clearly very proud Scotsman. We came here and bought into the whole

:10:40.:10:43.

Olympic experience as the defending Olympic champion and you were there

:10:44.:10:47.

for that as well. What a special moment that was for him. You saw the

:10:48.:10:51.

emotion at match point against Juan Martin Del Potro. It was someone

:10:52.:10:58.

breaking and then breaking back and there were no 6-1 sets. Murray moved

:10:59.:11:03.

Juan Martin Del Potro everywhere he was out of his feet and it took a

:11:04.:11:07.

deep breath and he banged in ace down and it was him again. And it

:11:08.:11:12.

got to 6-5 and he broke to win it I do not think they could have

:11:13.:11:16.

continued. Four hours for four sets and you saw the end they grabbed

:11:17.:11:21.

each other and they wiped out. The Brazilian fans were great and they

:11:22.:11:25.

suddenly became British fans because of Argentina and Maradona was there

:11:26.:11:30.

to support Juan Martin Del Potro on Brazil didn't like that much and the

:11:31.:11:35.

atmosphere for those four hours was unbelievable. We follow Andy Murray

:11:36.:11:38.

and we have been to the Davis Cup final last year we go everywhere,

:11:39.:11:41.

absolutely brilliant to come here and see it. A couple of people

:11:42.:11:46.

watching on social media are remarking your T-shirt is on the

:11:47.:11:55.

wrong way round. Shall turnaround? A quick flash, but this is a really

:11:56.:12:05.

quick flash. I like the T-shirt, but I thought it wasn't appropriate

:12:06.:12:10.

viewing children and adults. Certainly not BBC One anyway! The

:12:11.:12:18.

BBC for its appropriate but you... What did you tell me earlier? My

:12:19.:12:24.

mother might not let me back in Scotland. You wouldn't get that on

:12:25.:12:32.

BBC One. We want to get social media involved tonight because Helen

:12:33.:12:36.

Glover is out in Rio tonight on the you know a hen do on BBC Four. She

:12:37.:12:41.

is out tonight we have tried to convince her to come down and have a

:12:42.:12:45.

chat with us before we go air at 2am. She says she is at a samba

:12:46.:12:49.

dancer tone with her and party friends at the moment. What can you

:12:50.:12:55.

offer the camera guys to get Helen Glover on television tonight. We

:12:56.:12:58.

will give her a personal Scottish Highland dance free of change --

:12:59.:13:03.

charge and maybe magic Mike Weir kilts.

:13:04.:13:08.

I think that's a good reason to come. If she is watching you might

:13:09.:13:13.

put off! Gentlemen, it's been a pleasure. I like the fact you can

:13:14.:13:16.

fit your phones in your sporrans, it's all there and taking care of.

:13:17.:13:20.

Kenny and Andy, thank you very much gentlemen. We will go back to the

:13:21.:13:24.

table tennis and the men's doubles final and as the binmen are back on

:13:25.:13:29.

the beach it is all happening. Japan against China at 1-1 and we returned

:13:30.:13:31.

to the Riocentro to pick it up. 1-1 after the singles in the

:13:32.:13:53.

gold-medal match. The doubles players have been decided. How does

:13:54.:14:06.

this affect the rest of the possibilities for this intriguing

:14:07.:14:12.

match? After that incredible performance by Mr Tani -- Mizutani,

:14:13.:14:27.

we know that Yoshi Muroya is a good player, but we have to back Ma Long

:14:28.:14:44.

here. They sent out Xu Xin in preference to playing at the top of

:14:45.:14:48.

the order, but he was dispatched, so there is a possibility that this

:14:49.:14:56.

match depends on this doubles. The two Japanese players on screen,

:14:57.:15:04.

Maharu Yoshimura and Koki Niwa have won two out of three, they won

:15:05.:15:09.

against Germany and Hong Kong, they have played strong opponents, and

:15:10.:15:14.

they have actually come through. Of course is

:15:15.:15:27.

a Zhang Jike and Xu Xin are ready. The Japanese pair are an established

:15:28.:15:42.

partnership, finalists in doubles on the world tour other Polish open and

:15:43.:15:47.

the Qatar open this year. So, a little more pressure than

:15:48.:15:56.

usual on the Chinese pair. Xu Xin just flicking off the end of

:15:57.:16:23.

the table. Perfect. Perfect execution of the flick, and Xu Xin

:16:24.:16:31.

straight through the back of the ball, read the spin well. Close,

:16:32.:16:38.

donations with a left/ right partnership, both combinations. I

:16:39.:16:44.

guess that will negate each other a little bit.

:16:45.:16:54.

Really getting the Chinese on the stretch. Great placement.

:16:55.:17:09.

Good top spin down the middle of the table from Xu Xin. I think the

:17:10.:17:15.

left-handed, right-handed combination tends to be one that

:17:16.:17:20.

countries are looking to develop, it tends to create a little more space

:17:21.:17:23.

down the middle of the table, as long as you get the footwork right

:17:24.:17:26.

and move back to your backhand side of the table, it opens up the table

:17:27.:17:29.

for your partner's forehand more often than not. What a backhand that

:17:30.:17:38.

from Maharu Yoshimura. Like a rocket. Delighted with that one, the

:17:39.:17:52.

Japanese coach. They will be delighted with the start they have

:17:53.:17:53.

had here. The Chinese pair have won so many on

:17:54.:18:18.

the tour, but the Japanese will be delighted with their start. The

:18:19.:18:29.

attack, aggressive. Zhang and Xu Xin have won three doubles titles on the

:18:30.:18:34.

tour this year alone. The served lifted long.

:18:35.:18:42.

And Xu Xin pounced on the opportunity to make that forehand

:18:43.:18:56.

topspin. That is a good top spin by Yoshi, they started strong. It is

:18:57.:19:16.

always tough when one player hasn't had such a spell on the tour. They

:19:17.:19:20.

are coming in cold. Oh, my goodness, the backhand from

:19:21.:19:45.

Maharu Yoshimura, the forehand popped up from Koki Niwa. Look how

:19:46.:19:55.

early he took the backhand topspin there, Yoshimura. Very flashy, Koki

:19:56.:20:07.

Niwa and Yoshimura. They are up four points.

:20:08.:20:14.

Five points in a row they have one, they now have game point.

:20:15.:20:34.

What an opening game! For Yoshimura and Koki Niwa, taking it for Japan

:20:35.:20:42.

11-4. They are on fire, they were on fire

:20:43.:20:48.

from the start of that game. In five minutes, taking the opening

:20:49.:21:09.

game in 11-4, very convincing. Can they sustain that level of play?

:21:10.:21:52.

Japan with the other hand, taking the opening game. -- Paul

:21:53.:22:06.

Great shot down the line from Yoshimura, he went straight through

:22:07.:22:12.

the ball, the drive smashed down the line. Of course, the two Japanese

:22:13.:22:18.

players are going out, being positive, going for the shots. They

:22:19.:22:26.

will be disappointed with that one. Yoshimura just pointing to his

:22:27.:22:30.

partner, basically saying, you did the business then, I let you down,

:22:31.:22:31.

that was the easy ball. Powerful and aggressive. The

:22:32.:22:52.

Japanese combination really dominating in some of these rallies.

:22:53.:22:57.

A very positive mindset they have. Good backhand topspin from Zhang,

:22:58.:23:30.

just came up the back of the ball, and China now lead 3-2. A signal

:23:31.:23:36.

there from Zhang, soap Xu Xin knows what serve his partner would like.

:23:37.:23:45.

That is a well-placed forehand topspin, out wide, played the angle

:23:46.:23:55.

well. Here it comes, out wide to Koki Niwa's forehand, he just watch

:23:56.:23:58.

as the ball go by. Zhang Jike and Ma Long just getting

:23:59.:24:23.

on top, they have a run of momentum and some bounce in their step.

:24:24.:24:34.

The Japanese coach encouraging his players here, he will be delighted

:24:35.:24:38.

with this situation at the moment. Koki Niwa just trying to play a

:24:39.:24:55.

strong backhand topspin on the diagonal, it wasn't quite there, but

:24:56.:25:00.

that is the sort of shots that the two Japanese players have to go for,

:25:01.:25:05.

chance there are if it comes off. Again, he was looking to topspin on

:25:06.:25:08.

the return of serve, Koki Niwa, changed his mind because it was an

:25:09.:25:13.

excellent serve, the second bounce was going to be on the table, so he

:25:14.:25:18.

had to play over the table and couldn't quite adjust quickly

:25:19.:25:26.

enough. So, it is looking like two quick games here. 11-4 for Japan in

:25:27.:25:31.

the first, and perhaps a similar score here. Amazing how things can

:25:32.:25:41.

turn around so quickly. The start of a new game.

:25:42.:25:49.

China serving at 9-3, second game, Japan having taken the first.

:25:50.:26:03.

Koki Niwa trying to flick out wide. Seven-game points for China. They

:26:04.:26:16.

get one back. Strong backhand from Yoshimura.

:26:17.:26:32.

That was a ridiculous shot! That was a 10-4 down shot, I might as well go

:26:33.:26:43.

for it. Just look at that. It shows he's got the talent.

:26:44.:26:52.

From 10-3 back to 10-6. Zhang Jike to serve now.

:26:53.:27:06.

And there is the second game, it 11-6 to China. Levelling the

:27:07.:27:16.

doubles, the third of the matches, at one game all. The overall match

:27:17.:27:19.

at one match all. One game all in this doubles match,

:27:20.:28:43.

China versus Japan. Third match of the team event gold medal match. And

:28:44.:28:52.

quite astonishing, the turnaround from the first game, which Japan won

:28:53.:28:58.

11-4 in five minutes, the second game going to China 11-6 in the same

:28:59.:29:05.

time, just totally different. It is amazing, it is the pair that got off

:29:06.:29:10.

to a good start that have dominated the game, in the first game, Japan

:29:11.:29:15.

got off to a flyer, China never got back into it, and the same happened

:29:16.:29:19.

in the second, it was 10-3 to China and Japan got a few points at the

:29:20.:29:24.

end. So I think the start of the game is so important for both pairs.

:29:25.:29:28.

If one pair goes ahead, the other pair seem to tense up a little bit.

:29:29.:29:32.

Doubles as a little more unpredictable than singles. And of

:29:33.:29:37.

course, these pairs have won big tournaments, but this will mean more

:29:38.:29:41.

than winning any tournament, this doubles, because whoever wins this

:29:42.:29:45.

doubles puts their team in a great situation for the gold medal.

:29:46.:30:12.

A good backhand down the line from Zhang Jike. The Japanese guys are

:30:13.:30:26.

taking their time. The Chinese coach is very animated on the bench,

:30:27.:30:35.

jumping up and down. I'm amazed he has gotten the adrenaline left. A

:30:36.:30:39.

flick off the line from Xu Xin hits the side of the

:30:40.:30:50.

table. Going for these smash their, Koki

:30:51.:31:06.

Niwa, it was a very good top-spin from Xu Xin and he managed to keep

:31:07.:31:10.

it quite low over the net as well. Let's have a look at it again. Here

:31:11.:31:15.

it comes now. Not as low as I thought but it still had a lot of

:31:16.:31:27.

top-spin, it was fizzing with spin. Zhang Jike will be disappointed, his

:31:28.:31:31.

forehand on the backhand side is normally very reliable body over its

:31:32.:31:37.

that one. In the lead, still anybody's game. A very different

:31:38.:31:51.

game this one, much closer, no one running away with it. 1-1 game. 5-5.

:31:52.:32:15.

The Japanese coach punching the air himself, a few points adrift, Japan,

:32:16.:32:27.

they are now one point up. Halfway through this third game. This is the

:32:28.:32:37.

first time they've been in the lead. It was 6-5, now 7-5. A good service

:32:38.:32:46.

-- the service there was not great from Xu Xin, it allowed Koki Niwa to

:32:47.:32:51.

play a strong top-spin. Koki Niwa will be disappointed, he

:32:52.:33:11.

had a chance there. Just throwing a lifeline to China. 8-5 down would

:33:12.:33:18.

have been a serious advantage for Japan. 7-6. Zhang Jike missing quite

:33:19.:33:25.

a few top-spin 's. That is a good top-spinner from Xu

:33:26.:33:57.

Xin, he was at full stretch there. We've seen the shot again in

:33:58.:34:02.

various, low over the net. Side spin. It was the side spin that won

:34:03.:34:09.

the point. Koki Niwa looking at his bat implies that there was that much

:34:10.:34:25.

side spin on the ball. Top-spin again and Zhang Jike would have been

:34:26.:34:29.

hoping to get the counter top-spinner and he stepped away from

:34:30.:34:32.

the table to give himself a little bit more time.

:34:33.:34:43.

Oh, that was a great backhander from Zhang Jike, stayed up to the table.

:34:44.:34:52.

Xu Xin set it up but it was well executed by Zhang Jike. There it

:34:53.:35:03.

comes. China, of course, will serve up the business end. A big point.

:35:04.:35:17.

Top-spin to top-spin, both coaches on their feet, a great rally. Such

:35:18.:35:26.

tight situations out here. One game all and is nine points all. Look at

:35:27.:35:28.

what they are coming up with. The most crucial moment arguably in

:35:29.:35:45.

the whole match, the overall match. A win here for Japan, they have to

:35:46.:35:49.

win two games here of course, but this one tightly in the balance.

:35:50.:36:06.

This time the trademark forehand top-spin from the backhand side, and

:36:07.:36:15.

well appreciated by the Chinese coach. All happening so quickly out

:36:16.:36:27.

here. A wonderful rally. Bringing up game point for China. Do you think

:36:28.:36:36.

he's pleased? He would be more pleased if his team can win this

:36:37.:36:48.

one. And they do. China are taking the third game 11-9. It was a

:36:49.:37:00.

beauty. They lead 2-1. The interesting that there was Zhang

:37:01.:37:04.

Jike fell on the rally of God of God of a couple of shots he would have

:37:05.:37:08.

been diving and scrambling on the floor. A tremendous game with great

:37:09.:37:14.

excitement and China now I think the favourites to take the doubles

:37:15.:37:18.

because I think Zhang Jike suddenly found a rich vein of form there. He

:37:19.:37:23.

had missed quite a few ?4 and he was, I think pretty nervous and

:37:24.:37:26.

suddenly at the end five or six points, just look at that. China

:37:27.:37:34.

leading 2-1, taking the third 11-9. The third game going to China 11-9.

:37:35.:38:12.

Not much in it. The start of the fourth game, China leading 2-1.

:38:13.:38:22.

An error from your shoe mirror. Of course, the way the order has panned

:38:23.:38:35.

out, the next game on is arguably a banker, or as much as you can have a

:38:36.:38:42.

banker with Jun Mizutani coming on at the end but if Japan lose the

:38:43.:38:45.

doubles then we have the master coming on, the Olympic champion

:38:46.:38:50.

coming on, so this is a must win for Japan. I just sense now that maybe

:38:51.:38:55.

the tide has turned and they needed to win a third game, we identified

:38:56.:39:07.

that. He is absolutely right, is the Japanese coach, on his feet and

:39:08.:39:11.

time-out. You really sense the change in momentum. They had their

:39:12.:39:18.

opportunities in that second game. They didn't quite get there, and now

:39:19.:39:24.

they have to get over the disappointment of that and also the

:39:25.:39:28.

Chinese pair are just playing with a bit more confidence, having that

:39:29.:39:32.

third game in their pocket. 3-0 in the fourth. It is a real credit to

:39:33.:39:43.

Japan, I have seen the Chinese coach get very excited before, but nothing

:39:44.:39:51.

like this. The adrenaline is working overtime for the Chinese coach.

:39:52.:40:04.

2-1, China was leading in the doubles and 3-0 in the fourth. It is

:40:05.:40:13.

always good to win the first point after the time-out, psychologically.

:40:14.:40:16.

If you're looking to break the momentum and you win a point then

:40:17.:40:21.

job done. Can they get a few more points now?

:40:22.:40:25.

They do. Two points on the trot after the time-out.

:40:26.:40:54.

Quite amazing really. The way that can happen. Zhang Jike and Xu Xin

:40:55.:41:05.

have a lovely flow in those opening points of that game. The bubble was

:41:06.:41:07.

burst by the time-out. 3-3. A great shot from Yoshimura, held

:41:08.:41:23.

his ground and played the top-spin. That is four consecutive points now

:41:24.:41:27.

for Japan, they are definitely back in this fourth game. A good top-spin

:41:28.:41:42.

from Xu Xin, came up the back of the ball, more top-spin than speed, very

:41:43.:41:46.

clever only there was the speed and the spin. If you keep playing the

:41:47.:41:55.

same shot you have to get the bat angle sorted but a you're varying

:41:56.:41:59.

the shot your opponents have to bury the bat angle. Backhand top-spin

:42:00.:42:10.

down the line. It was a good idea. Zhang Jike it started to step around

:42:11.:42:15.

the backhand, but it misses. Tactics were good. Execution not. A heavy

:42:16.:42:21.

backspin on the serve their from Xu Xin. He really came under the board.

:42:22.:42:25.

-- he really came underneath the ball, so it was fizzing with

:42:26.:42:30.

backspin. China are now back with a 2-point lead. Importantly with that

:42:31.:42:48.

momentum up on their side. A good push their by Yoshimura, suddenly

:42:49.:42:57.

went long and deep. Xu Xin is just holding his back a bit, he has had a

:42:58.:43:02.

history of back injury. He certainly pulled up after that shot. He looks

:43:03.:43:08.

uncomfortable as he stood after that. They time-out has been called.

:43:09.:43:24.

Definitely in some pain. Zhang Jike. Confirmation of the situation at the

:43:25.:43:32.

moment. Zhang Jike just doing a little bit of scratching. --

:43:33.:43:42.

stretching. So the youngsters, relatively speaking, 21 and 23 years

:43:43.:43:57.

of age. The two Chinese players, Zhang Jike 28, Xu Xin 26.

:43:58.:44:15.

Your thoughts on the timing of the time-out? I think potentially they

:44:16.:44:23.

are worried about the injury, I think Xu Xin saw Zhang Jike grimace,

:44:24.:44:33.

and he had up his sleeve,. Good topspin, just give him time to

:44:34.:44:36.

stretches back a little bit, unleashed that forehand topspin.

:44:37.:44:44.

Doesn't seem to be having any problems with the movement. The

:44:45.:44:48.

concern will be that he has had major problems with the back. A

:44:49.:44:54.

fracture in part of his spine in 2015.

:44:55.:45:08.

Good use of the wrists from Xu Xin, a little more topspin on the ball.

:45:09.:45:18.

The block not quite over the spin. So, China now with a useful 3-point

:45:19.:45:25.

lead, and it is the second serve in this sequence for Xu Xin. And the

:45:26.:45:33.

flick off the end of the table from Yoshimura, it was a brave thing to

:45:34.:45:37.

do. Time running out for the Japanese team. They must winless

:45:38.:45:42.

game to stay in it. 5-9. Match point for China. Zhang Jike

:45:43.:45:52.

and Xu Xin. That visit, a gentle celebration

:45:53.:46:16.

there, relieved to get through that one. Zhang Jike and Xu Xin winning

:46:17.:46:36.

that one three games to one, 11-5 in the fourth, and not an exuberant

:46:37.:46:40.

celebration after the emotions of that match. They've still got a lot

:46:41.:46:44.

of work to do out here. They did well after the time-out call by U

:46:45.:46:56.

Liang, and I think they won every point after the time-out, so it

:46:57.:47:00.

wasn't quite an anti-climax, but we thought it was going to be really

:47:01.:47:03.

tight, and China ran out fairly comfortable victors in that fourth

:47:04.:47:11.

game, but that was a big win for Xu Xin and Zhang Jike, and we now have

:47:12.:47:16.

another five-minute break, up to five minutes if the players want it.

:47:17.:47:24.

Confirmation of that result. Three games to one, 11-5 in the fourth.

:47:25.:47:35.

So, there you have it. We shall be back for the fourth game. We are

:47:36.:47:42.

with you until around about two o'clock. It looks like we have

:47:43.:47:47.

failed in our attempt to bring you Helen Glover, she is enjoying her

:47:48.:47:54.

hen do out in Rio. Number one in the good news, though, Copacabinmen has

:47:55.:48:03.

been trending on Twitter tonight. And you can see Laura and Pablo

:48:04.:48:10.

there, not the guy in the blue T-shirt, he is from Chile and he is

:48:11.:48:13.

selling flags, but Laura and Pablo are going to play a site tonight

:48:14.:48:20.

with their band Lynn and banjo. I have to get the name of this, I have

:48:21.:48:28.

to read you a little bit of this. Squeezy Orange has sent us

:48:29.:48:36.

Copacabanter the musical. You can find it on Twitter, I will half sing

:48:37.:48:37.

it is to you. Channel Barry Manilow.

:48:38.:48:54.

# They are the binmen, Copacabinmen, riding up and down the beach, no

:48:55.:48:58.

orange bin they couldn't reach # They wave at Walker, the bin man

:48:59.:49:01.

stalker # He should present the sport, but

:49:02.:49:06.

we'd rather here his bin report # The show has been fun and

:49:07.:49:09.

entertaining, and we want more # It is the Copacabanter

:49:10.:49:16.

# Olympic we sport should be scant # It is the Copacabanter

:49:17.:49:23.

# Beachcombing slow-mo, the future of TV shows, at the Copacabanter...

:49:24.:49:28.

And it goes on. APPLAUSE

:49:29.:49:36.

There are three versus! One is about Maria and one is about Antony

:49:37.:49:42.

Worrall Thompson. I will do it another time, but thank you very

:49:43.:49:46.

much to Squeezy Orange, who has clearly spent far too much time on

:49:47.:49:52.

that! We have our live musicians, Laura and Pablo. On BBC One at the

:49:53.:50:01.

moment, Usain Bolt going in the heats of the 200 metres, the final

:50:02.:50:05.

of that is tomorrow. You can also see Jade Jones tomorrow, and the

:50:06.:50:14.

triathlon as well with the Brownlees involved. There is a Bolt Countdown,

:50:15.:50:24.

you can finish with us, have a little music and finish with the

:50:25.:50:30.

Bolt Countdown, over on BBC One, how does that sound? Ore will be back

:50:31.:50:37.

tomorrow, but let's go back to the table tennis, and we have a bit more

:50:38.:50:44.

of China taking on Japan. I don't know whether you are just joining us

:50:45.:50:48.

whether you have been for hours, but if you are drifting off to sleep,

:50:49.:50:53.

wake-up! We are going back to the table tennis, China leading Japan by

:50:54.:50:58.

two games to one, we are into the fourth match now. If they win this

:50:59.:51:01.

one than the gold medal goes to China. This is the gold medal match,

:51:02.:51:07.

I'm not sure we will be able to stay with it for a duration, but you

:51:08.:51:10.

continue with it on the Red Button or via the sport app, apologies once

:51:11.:51:14.

again for that lame Barry Manilow thing, but I think we are all

:51:15.:51:18.

getting a bit carried away. Here is some table tennis.

:51:19.:51:51.

Playing for the gold medal in the team event, the final event on the

:51:52.:52:00.

table tennis programme for Rio 2016. China have never lost a team event

:52:01.:52:07.

in an Olympic competition, but they are being pushed in this one against

:52:08.:52:14.

Japan. This is the fourth match, China lead 2-1 in the overall match.

:52:15.:52:20.

Ma Long won his opening singles against Koki Niwa of Japan. Then Xu

:52:21.:52:35.

Xin lost to Jun Mizutani, and then the doubles which was not without

:52:36.:52:40.

its drama. Now we go into the fourth singles, with Maharu Yoshimura of

:52:41.:52:49.

Japan taking on Ma Long. Yoshimura ranked 21 in the world, 23 years of

:52:50.:52:54.

age, and it will be a tough task for him against the world number one.

:52:55.:53:01.

And the world number one is so strong in the team event. He

:53:02.:53:04.

actually was the youngest person to win a gold medal in the team event,

:53:05.:53:11.

and he won that back in Bremen in a team event, part of the Chinese

:53:12.:53:15.

team, an amazing performance, and here we are ten years later, he is

:53:16.:53:19.

the number one player in the Chinese team, he has put together a run of

:53:20.:53:23.

some 30 matches now, undefeated, so statistically speaking, Olympic

:53:24.:53:29.

champion, world champion, with an impeccable record in the team event.

:53:30.:53:33.

It doesn't get any tougher for Yoshimura then coming up against Ma

:53:34.:53:39.

Long, but you don't know what will happen, there are always surprises

:53:40.:53:43.

in sport, and that is what is so wonderful about the Olympics and

:53:44.:53:46.

sport itself, but this gentleman has a tough task in front of him.

:53:47.:53:54.

Match four of the gold medal final of the teams event. Ma Long to

:53:55.:54:02.

serve. Also, Yoshimura has to deal with the

:54:03.:54:13.

disappointment of the doubles that he has just played and lost.

:54:14.:54:22.

That is a fantastic shot, just steps around the backhand. So smooth. It

:54:23.:54:32.

just went like a bullet down the middle of the table, he looks like,

:54:33.:54:38.

even when he is leaning and looks off-balance, he plays with power.

:54:39.:54:42.

Just look at that return of service, unbelievable. Like many champions,

:54:43.:54:45.

he makes it look easy. Yoshimura showing good attitude

:54:46.:55:02.

there, fighting for every point. He needs to be brave, take a few

:55:03.:55:06.

chances, just hope that the luck goes his way slightly.

:55:07.:55:13.

The top spin backhand a little bit long. You Goolie

:55:14.:55:28.

Liang, the Chinese coach, looking a little more relaxed. He just has

:55:29.:55:38.

such tremendous confidence in this man.

:55:39.:55:46.

There were some very tight moments in the doubles.

:55:47.:56:01.

Just miss timed the service action there, I don't think the ball was

:56:02.:56:07.

thrown up as he would have liked, may be stuck in his hand a little

:56:08.:56:11.

bit. My goodness, what a great flick,

:56:12.:56:15.

textbook technique, top of the bands, elbow, wrist, through the

:56:16.:56:21.

back of the ball. Ma Long all over Yoshimura at the moment, 7-1.

:56:22.:56:42.

Right, we will leave it there on BBC Four this evening. This match

:56:43.:56:48.

continues on the Red Button and the website, so if you would like to

:56:49.:56:52.

know who will win the gold medal in the men's team table tennis, and on

:56:53.:56:55.

the other Red Button, depending on which stream you watch, you can see

:56:56.:56:59.

the bronze medal match in the beach volleyball. And then that will be

:57:00.:57:06.

followed by the gold medal match in the women's beach volleyball as

:57:07.:57:09.

well, and over on BBC One, the athletics continues. In about an

:57:10.:57:14.

hour, you will be able to see the final of the 100 metres hurdles with

:57:15.:57:23.

Tiffany Porter and Cindy Ofili representing Team GB. That continues

:57:24.:57:27.

on BBC One for the next few hours. But we are going to leave you with a

:57:28.:57:31.

bit of live music on BBC Four. And we have a big crowd, as well! Good

:57:32.:57:35.

evening, everybody! CHEERING

:57:36.:57:40.

Look at them all. They have assembled to see these two, this is

:57:41.:57:45.

Laura and Pablo, lovely to have you on. They will play us out tonight

:57:46.:58:00.

with a track called to make -- Los Imperios.

:58:01.:58:04.
