Day 12 BBC Two: 22.00-22.30 Olympics

Good evening and welcome to viewers on BBC Two. We are continuing our

coverage of the Rio Olympics and you are watching live Great Britain

against New Zealand in the semifinals of the hockey and if they

win this they will be through to the gold medal match. If you're watching

on BBC One we are about to leave you but join us immediately on two.

Twigg needs to get a decent stick on that. The danger isn't done yet.

Whitelock. Oh, goodness me, that has got Twigg a fully in the face as it

flew off the New Zealand stick. That is a really nasty one. There is

absolutely no reaction time for Georgie Twigg there, I think she has

taken it right in the mouth and possibly the nose. The doctor is

currently with Crista Cullen and Emma Batchelor is with her on the

floor. It can be brutal this sport. Shin pads and gumshield is, that's

about all the outfield players wear. Some of them wear a glove on some of

them don't. Georgie Twigg took the ball right in the face. The second

long injury delay of this quarter, following Crista Cullen 's injury

and exit to have some stitches put in potentially. There is a lot of

concern from the GB players. Also from the players in the stand as

well. They always talk about the squad of 31, so it is not just about

the 16 on the field but the people back based in Bish as well.

is on track at the moment, but there is a lot of hockey to be played.

Unsworth takes it back to Kate Richardson-Walsh. A nice cake from

Lily Owsley. That one ball by Kate Richardson-Walsh took five Kiwis out

of play. Helen Richardson-Walsh up to the baseline and a penalty corner

for Great Britain and that is what she was looking for. They are

heading for a referral. We want to see a foot. The video umpire is

asked to look at whether the foot is inside the circle or not. On the

line is asked -- classed as inside the day. -- inside the D. It is a

tough call, we know the umpires have different views available to them.

It hasn't worked out well at all for New Zealand. They have to defend the

penalty corner and they have lost the video umpire option. You only

get one shot and if it is wrong you lose that possibility. Great Britain

are now in their huddle. They do not have Crista Cullen on the field, who

would normally be involved in these situations. Georgie Twigg Will North

-- Georgie Twigg will ordinarily be injecting and she is off as well so

Shona McCallin has taken up the injection duties and Giselle Ansley

and Laura Unsworth are poised to have a pop at this penalty corner.

It is the fourth of the match for Great Britain.

Giselle Ansley drag flicks it and it comes off, and another option,

another opportunity now for Great Britain, penalty corner number five.

That is good running again. Giselle Ansley is looking, I imagine for the

deflection from Helen Richardson-Walsh and you can see a

flying in behind Webster. Shona McCallin returns to the penalty

corner injection spot. No change. Ansley and Unsworth.

Ansley, oh, diving, Helen Richardson-Walsh tempted to get her

stick on the ball. It is a touch from the New Zealand defence that

has taken the ball away from Helen Richardson-Walsh just at the last

minute. I think it is Brooke Neal on the poster who gets down very low

and it comes off her left glove. Hollie Webb restarts for Great

Britain and sends it via Kate Richardson-Walsh to New Zealand

stick. This is a dangerous looking break for the black sticks, they

have got three forward. Kate Richardson-Walsh is trying to tidy

things up. Hayward gets a bit of space and a free hit. Driven in.

Ansley is watching all of the way. Lily Owsley is hoping to get a

little bounce to help her on her way. She has taken up a forward

position now and was the target of that aerial ball. With GB currently

two players down they really are going to have to value possession

and keep the ball and try and work their way through the New Zealand

press. Play smart and play simple. Alex Danson is down on her knees.

Great Britain are two down from the squad. They still have 11 players on

the field but they are running out of reinforcements. Yes, it makes the

institution -- interchanges and substitutions a lot harder. It means

the players on the field will have to play longer spells and might not

be able to attack at the intensity they would like to, but we know

their team defence has been exceptional throughout this

tournament. New Zealand have a real head of tea -- steam here. Attack

again. Now just a little bit of relief from the constant pressure.

Great Britain can get their shape back. That was a poor attempted

aerial from Giselle Ansley, out of play, allowing New Zealand right

back inside Great Britain 's 23. This is Whitelock. Rose Keddell. She

takes it to the end of the circle. This is promising for New Zealand,

can they get a shot on? Wonderful defence tidied up by Great Britain.

The whistle blows, Great Britain 's ball. Fantastic defence by Hollie

Webb. You can't help feeling that this is the opportunity for the

black sticks if they are to get back in this game, it will be whilst the

GB squad is down two players. As I have said, these GB players have

worked so hard on their team defence and everyone is putting in a shift

including the forwards as well as those defenders. Hannah Macleod

finds Danson, who finds Unsworth but is surrounded by Kiwis. She unlocks

that New Zealand pressure and MacLeod is dealing with the next New

Zealand attack. They come down all right and they players forward.

Someone has lost their stick. It has come off the hand. Nicola White is

on the right. Well played, Nichola White. Deep into New Zealand 's

half. The good news is that Crista Cullen is having a chat with Karen

brown on the side of the field, she has got a baby now and then she is

ready to come back on the field. Hollie Webb 's delivery falls behind

the New Zealand baseline. Crista Cullen, with a new scar to show for

her hockey career. Enjoying the many that she has managed to get over the

years, to be honest, and a couple of broken thumbs as well, an absolute

warrior! McLaren, into the Great Britain circle. Outside of the

circle now. Huge boots is away, outside of danger. -- Maddie Hinch

boots it away. Sustained pressure from the black

sticks. Kate Richardson-Walsh finds Sophie Bray. Sophie Bray again. That

is great from Danson, good taken a good turn and a decent pass to

Townsend, who couldn't capitalise. New Zealand with players forward,

Maddy Hinch. She wasn't called upon in the end. Olivia Merry showed

little composure in the circle. Where was the call to her? It was a

great break by the black sticks and she has got all the time in the

world to actually take a touch, take a trap, there is absolutely no need

in that situation to have a swing with your back to goal.

Frantic play now as Great Britain endeavoured to hold onto this

slender lead. Alex Danson Hadar Goldin the first half and Great

Britain lead New Zealand by 1-0 and there is 1.5 minutes left in the

third period. New Zealand are in possession one more time. Maddy

Hinch off her line, can make clear it? Oh, calm and composed by

Susannah Townsend, with inch out of play. Hitch is another one who has

taken a sliding Olivia Merry. Really brave by Maddy Hinch. Even though

she has all the kit on, you can see a helmet comes off in the tackle and

she has taken most of the impact on her head but Susannah Townsend back

there and Giselle Ansley as well. Great defence by Laura Unsworth and

hinge. Whitelock slide it across to Pearce and McLaren on the right. A

brilliant tackle from Hollie Webb. A second piece of good news, Georgie

Twigg has reappeared and she is talking to Mike Rossiter, the

doctor. Last 20 seconds of the third

quarter. Sophie Bray. Involved in just about everything tonight, and

the ball bounced for Bray and Great Britain have one more chance. That

chance has passed now. The crowd are counting down to the end of the

third quarter. No change. New Zealand zero, Great Britain one. 15

minutes of hockey left to play in this semifinal.

Of course, the four-minute break once again. A lot of pressure on

Great Britain, and of course those two injuries, Simon, wouldn't have

helped the amount of pressure they have to soak up?

If you look at how deep they have been forced they are handling really

well defensively. Players will normally at this level rotate may be

every six or seven minutes to maintain the intensity and as soon

as you take two players out of that rotation for nearly ten minutes it

has percentage, maybe 5% impact on the physicality so as this game

stays tight all the way through, it is whether Great Britain have the

conditioning to maintain that defensive integrity as they get

pulled about in the latter stages. What we saw with those injuries is

just how brave you have to be to go and do what people do. You are in

gold so you were padded and protected, but outfield players have

it so difficult. You see in the penalty corners have

it so difficult. You see in the penalty corners have it so

difficult. You see in the penalty corners how they charge out to close

down the space. Yes, you are looking at incredibly strong and brave

athletes that are trying to defend space. The most impressive bit for

me is how they put their stick flat on the floor with a left hand on the

floor when someone is winding up for a cross or a crash ball in and your

fingers are in the way of the ball and it will come at 100 miles an

hour time after time and the mental strength it takes to put yourself

there because there is an Olympic medal on the line is immense. Great

composure from Eddie Townsend and Maddie Hinch. There were times the

ball was rolling towards them and she was coming stroking it away.

Where you impressed? I was impressed. It was like she was

kicking a ball in the park on a Saturday afternoon. Maddy Hinch is

one of the best goalkeepers in the world, if not the best, jihad

immense confidence in our inability. She is not arrogant but she does her

job all the time and that is what you need as a team, someone behind

you. She will deal with the ball when it comes in, no hassle. Whether

it is kick away or ass mother she takes it and gets back up. 20

minutes from the end of the game and what will they say? They have to

communicate well and the dangers they get fragmented as a defence New

Zealand can find the defences -- spaces between them. I think they

are fit enough to maintain it but if they do not do that first

And there are times when they can, but they have played at high

intensity 45 minutes, fatigue will be kicking in, it is whether it

affects the brain. Both teams need to be clear in their thoughts. And

now it comes down to desire. Great Britain are so close, surely they

will be all shouting to each other, just everything on the line. It is

as simple as that, everything on the line. They will want it so badly,

but they need to control that adrenaline and roll it forward,

composure, keep their shape, try to take another goal. 40 seconds till

the start of the fourth and final period, Great Britain leading New

Zealand 1-0 in this semifinal. Just 30 seconds away from the restart,

they will stick to the times. All the players happy to get the extra

break occurs of the warm temperatures this evening. Great

Britain 15 seconds away from a guaranteed Olympic medal. New

Zealand with it all to do. And now the Great Britain fans are starting

to raise their voices as we have a crescendo of noise heading to the

start of the fourth and final 15 minute period. We are under way.

Keddell down the left flank. New Zealand first to push, but Susannah

Townsend has done well. Danson loses out. Cocks, a little flick forward

to Keddell. Flynn is inside the circle, and it has gone behind. A

similar start. Georgie Twigg is putting ice on her mouth. It will be

interesting to see if she takes the field again, she would love to be

out there playing, but the doctor may say, we are not going to risk

it, another blow could rule you out of the next game. The Kiwis have

started this quarter as they did the third quarter, and it is about the

calmness of the mind. Danny Kerry, I wonder how calm his mind is at the

moment! Giselle Ansley just having a look

around. Now she sends it off down the line to Shona McCallin.

Alex Danson tried to get the stick in before the New Zealand Whitelock

was able to release her past. An aerial ball. Sophie Bray Mr attempt

to take it out of the night sky. New Zealand flashed it across in front

of Maddie Hinch in's goal, but Gemma Flynn was unable to get any stick on

ball. Stacey Michelsen as the ball went across the GB circle has every

right to put her arms out as if to say, where were you. Danson has

found Helen Richardson-Walsh, can she score?

WHISTLE Penalty stroke! Penalty stroke

awarded, Richardson-Walsh upended by the goalkeeper. A dangerous position

just in front of goal. I think it may be a yellow card, it was a

combination of Kayla Whitelock and Sally Rutherford. She bundled Helen

Richardson-Walsh into Sally Rutherford, she hits her head on the

deck, you can see the lump on Georgie Twigg's right-hand side of

her mouth. Helen Richardson-Walsh did miss one against Argentina the

other evening, putting it to the goalkeeper's glove side, and when I

spoke to her afterwards, she said, we were 3-1 up, it didn't really

matter. Well, this one does matter! Great Britain are 1-0 up. Helen

Richardson-Walsh will take the penalty stroke.

And scores! She has picked up a knock, Helen Richardson-Walsh, she

limped away after that penalty stroke, surrounded by her

team-mates. She will have to go off the field of play now, another

injury for Great Britain, another worrying casualties. But New Zealand

0- two Great Britain, under 13 minutes left in the contest.

Brilliance, Helen Richardson-Walsh, I'm hoping this is cramp and nothing

else, but we are only a couple of minutes into the fourth quarter, but

she has worked so hard, she doesn't need any help coming off the field,

so hopefully it is not a muscular injury, just cramp. It is a long way

back for the Kiwis now, 2-0 down with 30 minutes on the clock. She

was just involved in a heavy collision right in front of goal, so

she might have picked up a knock that the adrenaline was suffocating

for a while. Anyway, she is off the field of play. Kayla Whitelock will

miss the next five minutes following her yellow card. So, New Zealand a

player down. 11 versus ten. Unsworth, solid defending yet again

from Laura Unsworth. New Zealand continue to press.

Unsworth gets her job done once again, and New Zealand will not give

it up, heading towards that circle. And now the free hit just outside.

Of a New Zealand stick, and over the top.

Sam Quek has gone around her opponent, nice pass as well to set

up Alex Danson. Danson's pass was long to Hannah Macleod. And there is

Helen Richardson-Walsh, still has her stick in her hand. We will wait

and see if she plays any further part. The doctor again has an down

the tunnel, so Mike Rossiter is having a busy evening. The focus is

back on the pitch, even at 2-0 down, the girls know they have a big 11

and a half minutes to go. Sam Quek getting stuck in.

Said the entire legs of the field by Crista Cullen, brilliant aerial

taken by Sophie Bray. Braid penalised.

Lively looking running down the centre from McLaren. Hannah Macleod

from great written, Townsend, one of these dangerous, darting runs of

hers. Lily Owsley turns one way and on the other, down towards the

baseline. No need to force it from a British perspective. Townsend making

the right decision, give the ball to said a Lily Owsley ahead of her,

keep it wide, attacks the Kiwis down their baseline. Perfect pass to

Cullen, off a New Zealand stick. Nicola White chasing it down, with

Cullen in tandem. Aerial ball from New Zealand. Sam Quek has got plenty

of time to deal with that. Forward to Cullen, and fight again.

Under ten minutes left in this semifinal. New Zealand 0- two Great

Britain. A goal in the first half from Alex Danson, penalty stroke in

the second half from Helen Richardson-Walsh. That is the

difference between the two teams. Danson, a lovely flick from Danson,

and this is promising for Great Britain. Lily Owsley's turn, and a

penalty stroke again! Lily Owsley absolutely flattened, and she is in

a bit of trouble as well. I think she landed, the stick may have

caught her, and she is struggling for breath, probably winded herself.

A brilliant pass by Townsend, fantastic lead by Owsley. You can

just see it is almost a little whiplash injury for Owsley, really

well played, gets upended, and then has winded herself. Alex Danson

stepped up to take the stroke of a Great Britain. Danson, to put Great

Britain 3-0 in front. She has got it! Danson scores her second, Great

Britain lead New Zealand 3-0 with under nine minutes left to play.

Kayla Whitelock still sat on the side of the field as the New Zealand

captain, two penalty strokes have been scored while she is off the

field. Alex Danson going the same way as Helen Richardson-Walsh, Sally

Rutherford gets a stick to it, beaten by the speed, and you have

got to say... I'm not going to say it. Don't. I'm not. 3-0 is a good

score so far from great written. Great Britain with the opportunity

so far just to slow things down, keep possession. Slow burn, these

attacking constructions, they start at the back. They have lost

possession, Charlton goes for the aerial option, but she is taken down

calmly by Laura Unsworth, who finds Sam Quek.

Nice pass from Townsend to Bray. Eventually hassled off the ball.

Britain attacking again, it almost felt the Lily Owsley. The Nicola

White, I beg your pardon. Hollie Webb launching the latest attack.

You can see the hunger in the Great Britain eyes, they sense there are

more goals in this match, and that will send a message to their

opponents for Friday evening. Alex Danson decides to go backwards for a

few moments, all the way back to Sam Quek. Great Britain, remember,

playing for a place in the Olympic final. The Netherlands will be their

opponents if they hold onto this 3-0 lead and win this semi against New

Zealand. Great Britain versus the Netherlands, a mouthwatering fixture

for Friday, still seven minutes of hockey to be played here, and New

Zealand are continuing to press. Now, in about three minutes from

now, we will be heading back to BBC One for the conclusion of this

match. Because of all the various injuries and delays that have

occurred, we have switched channels, but we will be back to BBC One in

about three minutes from now. Cullen goes high. Out of play, a few

more seconds ticking off the remaining time. It is down to six

minutes and 13 seconds. Hannah Macleod beaten for pace there.

New Zealand are going to get a goal, they need to get it now or they will

run out of the options to get back on level terms. The umpire has blown

in Britain's favour. Hollie Webb signalling to Kate Richardson-Walsh

that she has got it under control. Sophie Bray, silky skills when she

is on the run. Bray plays it back to White, and it is black stick ball.

It has been to reflect fourth quarter by Britain as they go on the

attack again. McCallin might get shot here. Penalty corner awarded.

Helen Richardson-Walsh is clearly not going to be taking any part.

That looks dramatic, but it is probably just an ice pack they can

strap to her hamstring as we see the penalty corner being awarded again.

This is Great Britain's sixth penalty corner of the game. Georgie

Twigg is back on the field. She has got a huge lump on her right cheek.

She will inject this penalty corner. Unsworth lining up trap. Clever here

we go, that didn't work well at all. It missed Unsworth, bounced off

web's stick. That one has found Lily Owsley. Owsley covering the ground

rapidly. McCallin plays it back for her, bit of a miscommunication

there. Hollie Webb. Kayla Whitelock is back on the field for New

Zealand, and she is now playing as a high striker.
