Exeter City v Liverpool The FA Cup

Exeter City, been an interesting 112 years to say the least, Devon,

Brazil, Greece, wonky spoons. It's been a thriller. We're known as the

Grecians. Beware of Greeks bearing gifts, Liverpool. Have you ever

played Brazil? We have. We were the first team ever to play Brazil,

which is why they play like us. Seriously, we toured Brazil in 1914

helping to establish football out there. They put together their first

ever national side just to play us. You can thank us later. Famous

people have visited this Venerable stadium too. Uri and his mate Mike

dropped by in 200#2, quick cup of tea and a pasty. League wise it's

been up and down for the last couple of decades. A bit bent spoonish. But

we own our football club. During the wilderness years the Supporter's

Trust took over the running of the club, kept it going. Still in charge

today, proving that red is much better than dead. It's certainly

much better than green. The FA Cup back then as well, handing us the

Red Devils 2005, 0-0 at Old Trafford. United scraped through on

the replay, 2-0. The revenue helped keep the club going. A very big bank

indeed. I haven't even had time to tell you about dido the lucky

seagull or the best dressed gaffer in the Football League. I will save

that for nest time. Right now it's Liverpool's turn to add their bit to

our wonderful history. We certainly have all the

ingredients for a classic night of cup football. Exeter City have

reached the third round of the Emirates FA Cup for the first time

in 11 seasons. The Grecians face an injury-hit Liverpool side, still

finding their feet under the charismatic Jurgen Klopp, who's all

set for his first taste of the competition. Good evening.

Unfamiliar surroundings then for Jurgen Klopp and he's named quite a

few unfamiliar faces. It's Liverpool's fifth match in 14, could

an upset be on the cards? To enjoy it with us are Ian Wright and we

couldn't come here without Alan Shearer, could we? The FA Cup is a

huge opportunity for Exeter City, the small club. We've seen it many

times br. This club was saved many years ago when they played

Manchester United. Five fulltime staff. Their most expensive player

ever ?60,000. Their goalkeeper is the press officer. They're live on

the BBC against one of the world's greatest football clubs, accidents

get any better than that for a player for Exeter, does it? When

they see the Liverpool team, there'll be a bit disappointed, but

-- bit of disappointed, but when reality sets in, they will think, we

have one hell of a chance tonight. They have. When you see the team

later, inexperience in the Liverpool side, I think that when you consider

what it done for them, the amount of money they made from the FA Cup with

the Man United game, they've got another opportunity to get through

this round because, I think the Liverpool side, unless they really

show up and prove people wrong in respect of the players they've

picked, I can see a really tough night for Liverpool tonight. We have

all played in games like this in the FA Cup, coming to a small club. It's

not easy. At Arsenal, we played Yeovil. Everybody is nervous. I

scored a hat-trick! LAUGHTER

Calmed everybody down, went on to win the cup. But you are frightened

because they have nothing to lose and it could be a great night for

them. Not a game to lose, is it? Not for Liverpool. The pressure is right

on them. Discipline deed. Let's check on the teams then. Dan walker

is at pitchside. Let's start with Exeter:

Lee Holmes, you might remember once the ever youngest to play in the FA

Cup, aged just 15 years old at Derby.

Up front, Tom Nichols, their top scorers this season with nine. For

Liverpool, only a few familiar faces in their team line-up.

The back four, Jose Enrique, almost a year since he last played for

Liverpool. Two debutantes in Stewart and Kent.

And up front, Christian Benteke is one of only two players in the

starting 11 - he's not playing by the way - who's played more than

four times for Liverpool. It looks like Jurgen Klopp is a fan of the

young ones. Might be scraping the bottom of the barrel with that one.

A real lack of experience there. It's a gamble from their manager.

Understandable gamble when you look at all the injuries that they've

got. Also with the number of games they've got. Also Premier League

fixture next week. He's given a chance to the younger ones tonight.

He's given a chance to Benteke. How does he feel in that team with all

those youngsters? Captain as well. He has a Palacive point to prove --

massive point to prove tonight. Yeah, so it's almost like a

punishment! He wants to see what his attitude is like tonight. What do

you make to Klopp's stance here, throwing in the youngsters -

disrespectful to the competition? No, Al's mentioned the games coming

up and the injuries they have. When you boil it down, the players have

an opportunity in respect of the FA Cup doing something to get them

through this round so they can get the boys back, the main boys, get

them back. Because as hard as this is going to be for them, Benteke,

this is going to be a massive game for him, if he stands up and is

counted and show the boys and lead by example really. It's a tough

game. It's never dull when Klopp's around. He's made a real impact

already on English football both on and off the pitch.

If somebody want to help LFC, you have to change from doubter to

believer. COMMENTATOR: Benteke takes his time

before shooting and scoring. REPORTER: Do you think your team is

ready to fight for the league? Oh, please, are you crazy?

COMMENTATOR: It's in on the second attempt. This is the greatest league

in the world because teams like West Brom come and make it difficult for

the teams that have everything. The atmosphere in the stadium was the

best since I'm here. COMMENTATOR: He's caught Sakho. He's

a soft German I think it's first time they've said this about me.

COMMENTATOR: It's 3-0. I hope some people did something better on this

Sunday when watching this game. The hammers. Maybe it's more my second

name than soft. COMMENTATOR: 2-0 and Liverpool have

no answer. It's not a day for being disappointed. It's a day for being

angry. We get dirty afterwards, that's not a problem u, don't have

to watch your clothes by yourself. Better than a boring start. You've

been a busy boy for the last three months, your first experience of the

FA Cup. First experience for some of your players as well. There must be

some in that 11 that you haven't even seen play yet? No, on video I

saw them playing. Kevin Stewart here since two days. Kent trained a few

session was us together. That's true, not all of them I saw a lot.

But it's the situation and special problems. They need special

solutions, that's what we try to do. So tonight we are here. But these

boys know each other. A lot of them play together in the youth. If they

want, this is the future of LFC. So tonight it's not the most easy

situation because they didn't train often together, but FA Cup, yeah,

lifts from special stories, usually from the smaller clubs, we'll say,

so in our situation we have to try everything to go to the next round.

We do it with this team. Is it a gamble then from you? No, no chance

to gamble. I didn't want. The only team I could present tonight. We are

always in talks with medical department and so, we had to react

on our situation. It's not usual that you have this situation on

centre halves. That's why we have to react and yeah, we did it. You have

rest aid few players with big -- rested a few players with big games

in the league as well. Nobody's resting. They all do what they have

to do after these intensive weeks. Nobody is resting. They all are

recovering to be in the best shape. The game today came too early for

them. That's the thing. They all have different problems. So, we

decided this thing. Have you ever done a pre-match interview in a tea

room before? For sure. You cannot imagine where I played before by

myself. It's nice, everything here what you need. I was looking out for

my cup, but there's no cup with my name, I'm sorry. There might be an

FA Cup at the end of the season. I hope it's coffee inside here. Sue

That's the magic of the cup right there.

We are contract wally obliged to say that at some point. There's Benteke,

the one really recognisable face. One or two others coming back from

injury at Liverpool. The focus is on him this evening. He has to prove

himself. Hae has. -- he has. To get the best out of Benteke, we saw at

Villa here, you have to put crosses into the box. When you do, he is

awesome in the air, as we know. He proved that at Aston Villa and 32.

?32.5 million suggests that he has that in his locker. It works in both

ways really. He has to get in the box, but also Liverpool have got to

put crosses into the box, like that. He is a threat. He's menace. He can

cause all sorts of problems. It's a two-way situation. To get the best

out of him, there's no point of playing him if you're not going to

put good balls into the box. We were talking about the fact that because

he's playing in this game, Klopp might not be sure about him. What's

wrong with him? People are saying about his link-up play, you know, to

get people into the game and you know, maybe his finishing, the

ball's bouncing off him. I was coming up on the train with a couple

of Liverpool fans, they weren't caning him, but they're not happy.

They're not seeing it yet. This is the kind of game, if it goes the

other way for any more in a game like this, where they don't see

enough out of him, it could work out bad for him. There's a big question

being asked tonight. One place they have experience is at the back with

the goalkeeper. Mignolet is not in. Bogdan's been around, but he's had

hairy moments as well. I spoke to their manager, Exeter, Paul Tisdale,

in the week, this is where he feels he can cause Liverpool problems.

Irrespective of whether it was Mignolet or Bogdan. Get balls into

the box, because they are susceptible when balls come in,

whether it's defenders or the keeper coming and flapping at crosses. Shot

stopping, that's a different matter. He's very good at that, I think. But

don't be surprised if you see Exeter raining in balls at every

opportunity, good balls in. That's exactly what they should be doing.

You watch some of the clips there on a decent pitch, he should be

catching them Even more so when you have an inexperienced back four who

haven't played much together. In contrast to Liverpool, Exeter have

plenty of experience in the squad. Matt Oakley was a losing Cup

Finalist with Southampton in 2003. Clinton Morrison has scored goals in

the Premier League. Mark's been to meet them.

Did you think that moments like this weekend were gone? Yeah, I think you

always think that, when you get to my age in my career, I was at home

and I was like, jumped off the chair, thinking, "Could be the last

time to play against a team like Liverpool. It was good for me and

especially the lads." You, Jamie McAllister, Danny Butterfield, Matt

Oakley, all in the twilight years. What's that a combined age of 200?

We found a very good team in Arsenal in the final in 2003, it blew our

bubble. I have the medal. It's a bag I keep with my under 21 caps. It's

special for me. Love playing football and match day is the best

day of the week. Until I lose that buzz, I lose my fitness, and my

pace... LAUGHTER

What are you laughing at? Nothing. This year Liverpool, last year

Warrington, that must be a horrendous low. We took some stick

after that game. It will hopefully be us on the other side trying to do

that to Liverpool. It's more of an embarrassing feel as an individual

as well as a club. It takes its time to get that out of your system. It's

certainly a feeling that we hope to be passing on to the Liverpool

players. Plenty of previous with Liverpool. Loads of previous. I

think I've scored like five goals in six or seven and I've always had

friendly banter with the Liverpool fans. They're a great clubs. It's a

privilege to play a team like Liverpool. It's easy to talk about

upsets. Does any little bit of you fear a drubbing? No. Footballers

don't think like that snrchlts No, I don't think you can fear a drubbing.

It's a possibility it could ha. We certainly feel at St James' Park we

can get a result. They're not going to enjoy it. I think the pitch has

taken a battering in two, three weeks with the weather. It's not

playing great. They'll be training on perfect pitches. We've been

training on nothing. Hope flit weather's bad on -- hopefully, the

weather's bad on the night and that gives us a little advantage. It has

to be said - well it doesn't, but I'm going to - Exeter aren't

bringing form into the game. They've lost four times in the league aft

beating Port Vale. There is Paul Tisdale, possibly the best dressed

gaffer in English football and maybe he's due a bit of luck in this

competition, having won just four FA Cup ties in ten years at the club.

That makes him the second longest serving manager in English football

after Arsene Wenger and he's been speaking to Dan Walker. Paul, this

club have been involved in great nights in their history,

opportunities for another one this evening? Definitely. I mean, it's

the FA Cup, anything can happen. We've just got the team sheets.

Liverpool don't have their strongest side. I don't know a great deal

about their team - Join the club! The thing is they are Liverpool

players and wearing the Liverpool shirt. We know what we have to do to

play our best, that's what we'll concentrate on. It's a great

opportunity tonight. People who have seen Exeter play, those who

regularly watch League Two, will know you're not a hoof it and chase

team. How do you get your players to play with freedom, despite the

occasion. That's part of the manager's craft, surely. We work on

it all week. You get it right sometimes and not others. We are a

different club. This is an opportunity to show that we're

different and we can play our game. It will be a good atmosphere

tonight. It's a good old-fashioned football stadium. I hope Liverpool

have a very unfomentable night. Are you able to enjoy nights like this?

I've been asked that question all week, yes, I have. There's a lot of

interest. That's a high quality problem. Ian Wright is in the studio

tonight. He wanted to say to you, he loves your clobber. Thank you very

Terrific hat. That's for sure. I love his hat. Great longevity. He

has been here a long time. He mentioned about he negotiated a

contract for the tea lady and stuff. He's one of those that he's right in

amongst it. It means a lot to him this club. I think that they've got

a great opportunity with the way it's worked out for them tonight.

Not only the pitch. Jurgen Klopp was saying the pitch would be a

leveller. We have to have a bit of Leeway on him because of the pitch

but that's what the FA Cup is about. Who might cause problems for

Liverpool? You have to look at the centre forward, 22-year-old Tom

Nichols, nine goals this season. He's been at the club since he was

11 years of age. We mention crosses. We are showing two of them here. If

they get them in, he can do that. Decent in the air, decent finish on

him. Exposure here, I like this. Then the income tax one as well. --

then the next one as well. No panic, lift it over, nice. You have Enrique

playing in the centre, if they get the ball in there, with the fact

that the communication will be tough - And they have bags of experience.

Sclul. -- absolutely. You have to think the lack of match practice

chances. Couldn't get in the Villa team. You're worried. You have to

worry about that. There's no shortage of famous Exeter fans. We

found two! Here's the other one. Hi, Liverpool is one of my favourite

places in the world. Today they're coming to play soccer against

Exeter, which is where I'm from. Here's my message of good luck to

Exeter City. The greatest team on earth. You can do it. Thanks for

that. Their latest album is Head full of Dreams. You pinched my line

there, he's got a head full of dreams. You said it better than me,

that's for sure. Just a few minutes from kickoff and Dan's caught up

with the man who opened the show with us, the other famous fan.

Yeah we thought we'd give you the opportunity to talk us into the

game. We've heard from Gary, Eastern and Allan. They know nothing! You're

a fan, what does this mean? The fans have been here for hours already

It's a very big game. The talk on the stand in a minute is whether we

want a win or a draw. Are you getting carried away? We don't think

we're going to lose. It's a possibility obviously, but a draw

might be nice because we get an away day at Liverpool. What would it mean

for this club, special Friday night, millions watching at home, packed

stadium as well, to beat a team like Liverpool, even though they're not

playing a full side? There's about 10,000 people here. Normally it's

4,000. It means an awful lot. They're making a big noise. We've

got a good team. We play at a different level, we're aware of

that. We have a manager who knows how to make players play. We have a

lot of academy players playing. They play a beautiful, on the ground

game, it will be fun to test it against 57 million on the park and

32 on the bench, even with their reserve team. You fully believe that

this can be your night - It's a win or a draw. It is! You heard it from

the man himself. You said everyone's been here for a while. If we can

swing the camera round, this lot have been in here for a full hour,

singing, dancing, getting ready, if it goes their way, maybe we could

have a bit of heaven in Devon tonight.

All exciting stuff. What is it, a win or a draw for Exeter? No other

option aparentsly. I think they have a fantastic opportunity. When they

looked at that team sheet, initially they'd have been disappointed

because the players want to play the big-name players. But when reality

sets in, they'll think, you know what, we've got a chance tonight.

We've got one opportunity to make a name for ourselves tonight and with

the crowd here, behind them, we're all here, the BBC, expecting an

upset, brilliant. Will they cause an upset, both of you? Yes. I think so

as well. Do you? Yes, I do. There they are. The two teams are in the

tunnel. Here we go. The first third round cup tie of 2016, it's Exeter

COMMENTATOR: Thanks Gary. Welcome everyone to round three of the

Emirates FA Cup. For many, this is one of the best weekends of the

football season and it all starts here with what is a classic

concoction, lower-league side at home to one of the great names of

the game and the game will be played on a surface that, well, it's not

quite Hereford and Halifax of yesteryear, it's not going to play

as pristinely as those Liverpool are used to in the Premier League. As

has been said, anything could happen. Liverpool's experienced trio

are about to lead them out of the cramped tunnel at St James' Park.

Christian Benteke captaining them for the night. Adam Bogdan and Jose

Enrique tucked in his r behind him. -- tucked in behind him. Liverpool

fielding a hugely inexperienced side tonight. Finally, the match

officials. They've crept through the two sets of players to lead them out

onto the turf. There won't be as much turf on there by the end of the

evening. This is one of the most atmospheric

grounds in the lower leagues. The big bank has a big reputation. It is

absolutely jam packed tonight. Jurgen Klopp has been making himself

at home. We heard him say in his playing career in Germany he might

have seen grounds of a similar nature to this. We saw him engaging

in lively conversation with Grecian the lion, Exeter City's mascot.

The average age of the 11 is down to just over 22. Average squad number,

34 and a bit. Two of the most stylish managers

around, although Jurgen Klopp has gone for the tracksuit look pretty

much ever since he came to this country. He was very much a jumper

and jeans man in the Bundesliga. Matt Oakley and Clinton Morrison,

Exeter with more familiar names on their bench than most of Liverpool's

starting line-up. David Noble is a key player tonight.

I like an old, experienced player and I think he's the passer, the

play-maker and could be crucial in their creativity this evening. Then

this young man, Bradley Smith, impressed with him with the games

I've seen in the Europa League, tenacious, good crosser of the ball,

loves to get forward and we'll see him flying down the left-hand side.

A fascinating game this evening with the changes Jurgen Klopp has made.

It's become a real difficult game for these young lads tonight. I

expect a close encounter. Stuart Atwell is the man in charge. He's

already referred the League Cup tie at Sunderland at the end of August

for Exeter. It was 6-3 that night. It was 3-3 at halftime

Er It is a game that's had that sort of feel, the whole of this city is

getting behind Paul Tisdale's team. That's how this club is, since 2003,

it hasn't got an owner. It's been run by a Supporter's Trust.

Everybody gets involved. They are a model to follow. Exeter will just

wish their recent form had been better, four straight defeats amidst

their own battle with injuries. They've seen a number of senior

players ruled out. Every vantage point taken. This is

great, a proper throw-back. We're all set with Liverpool to get

the action under way. They're in their change strip of all white

tonight. Exeter in their red and white striped shirts. How will

Liverpool's young line-up deal with an FA Cup third round tie that has

all the ingredients for an upset? Connor Randall, his third

appearance, two in the Capital One cup this season.

Free kick for Liverpool. Huge moment for some of these young

players to put on that Liverpool shirt, especially the local lads,

for the first time, an amazing feeling and something they will

remember for the rest of their careers and a great opportunity for

them. He arrived at Exeter from Peter

Brough. He was at Aston Villa as a junior. He finds Lee Holmes. He has

the beating of Randall. A cross by Kent. Good tracking by the young

winger. In a hurry to get the ball moving again. It was played too

hurriedly. Looking to spring Sinclair away again.

Properly hamstrung by what team he could pick this evening. No doubt at

all, he says, that this was the team he had to pick. Especially with the

fixtures they have coming up. One or two maybe should have played tonight

but we will see, these lads are obviously talented. They have

ability. Here is Noble. Enrique. He plays the ball out with a

deflection. I was thinking of the likes of Joe Allen who has not had

many minutes. Milner has just got back. He knows his players better

than I do. He is with them every day. He has the periods of those

talented players on the bench. -- he has the experience will stop it is a

nice question, those two. -- experience. Could not keep the ball

in Liverpool's possession. Plays it back to bog down. Passes when there

is not so much time as that will have to be precise tonight. No

risks, no silly mistakes. Looking for Reid. That will easily get

through to Bogdan. One of the reasons Liverpool signed him was

because of his performance for Bolton against Liverpool last

season. It was a terrific performance. That was a little bit

too close. Jose Enrique looks disdainfully at Tom Nichols. Here is

Benteke again. He gifted the ball back. He had the strength to hold

him off. He then presented it to tailor. -- Taylor. He had to be

switched on to keep it away from Reid. That will be a free kick. Nice

bit of skill by Teixeira. Really nice bit of skill. Just before that

we saw the obvious pace of Nichols against Enrique. That will be

something to watch. If he keeps being asked to turn around and run

back to his own goal, he has not played a lot, well, he has not

played at all. He will not be at his sharpest. He has played for the

under-21 side full of a brawl in central defence this season. When

you put together a back four at short notice, there is an experience

in there, and there will be miscommunication. He is an

experienced player so he should take responsibility. Holmes has a look.

Jordan Moore-Taylor, 20 years old. It is a Liverpool throw. Randall. It

would not run for Sinclair. That is Alex Nicholls, rather, Tom Nichols.

That was a good tackle by Teixeira. The Portuguese has it again, finding

Benteke. Sinclair. He had to win it. Benteke was just a little bit

stronger. It does not cost his team, though. Lovely plate, turning around

the corner. Nice little linkup between him and Sinclair.

Lee Holmes given plenty of time on the ball. It should be tidied up and

cleared and it is by Brannagan. Sinclair gets onto the return.

Benteke and Teixeira are over to his left. He cannot get to that. It is

overdone by Teixeira. Sinclair, there was a moment where he could

have played it into Benteke and he was crying out for it. You have to

make a conscious effort to get the ball in the box when you have space

and time but he decides to cut back and be more intricate. Those are the

moments when you have to get the ball in the box and let Benteke use

his power, especially against players at this level who are so

much bigger and stronger and more experienced. Straight out of play by

Bobby Olejnik. Fascinating in the warm up, I was surprised to see

Jurgen Klopp doing some phases of play, attacking movements with

Benteke. Obviously because they haven't played together. It is

something I don't think I've ever seen before. Interesting approach on

match day by Jurgen Klopp. There was no foul. They can build again. Reid

is running here. And in front of Jose Enrique. He plays it across to

Nichols. Exeter City strike first in the FA Cup third round. It was an

easy goal too. St. James' Park is jumping. Although the Exeter

management team remains as calm as they can. Their team has started.

Are they back to glory? Scored by Tom Nichols who gets his 10th of the

season and it is the one that he will cherish the most. It's that

space behind Enrique that I talked about earlier, he hasn't got the

legs or the pace. Keep putting it in there. This time it is Reid who

outdoes him. Super ball across the box and what a calm finish by

Nichols on his weaker foot. It is a brilliant finish. He scored last

weekend against Dagenham Redbridge. He also scored in the

first round at Didcot. This one is against Liverpool.

A little bit of uncertainty. Jordan Moore-Taylor tidies it up by putting

it behind. That is the good final end product. That Smith possesses

with his left foot. Great ball across. Brannagan. He will take the

Liverpool corner. It might work even though it doesn't look like a good

one. It is Smith with the effort. It is stopped right under the nose of

Olejnik. He had this day Khan with Ryan Kent

closing. -- he had to remain calm. Kent was recalled from a loan spell

at Coventry. It's a decent comeback at Exeter

this, by Liverpool, starting to knock it around for the first time

in the game. It was a good reaction. Exactly what you would expect.

Sometimes you get a bit more relaxed when you go a goal down because you

have nothing to lose. It is going in from Smith. It's a good block by the

defender. Exeter will be delighted with the start they have made. It's

easier when you are standing or sitting here, but the pace that they

have upfront is going to cause him problems. Ryan Kent is pretty pacey

himself. He manages to squeeze it through the legs of Alex Nicholls.

There might be shot for Ryan Kent here it almost deflects for Benteke.

It does come to Sinclair. Liverpool are level. Well, that didn't take

long. Jerome Sinclair scores his first senior goal for Liverpool.

Exeter just couldn't get the ball away. It's a bit of a lucky goal

actually. Benteke just gets a touch there. At sixes and sevens, no one

demanding it. It's a good finish. And a good touch by Benteke. He

maybe could have got a penalty. It is a calm finish by Sinclair and

Liverpool get back into it straightaway. It really has been an

excellent reaction by Jurgen Klopp's team. Almost as if they needed

Exeter to score to really get themselves in the game. A big moment

for Jerome Sinclair. There was a lot of speculation about whether he has

an Anfield future. He is in the final year of his current deal. He

has been linked with moves away. Maybe this is a bit of window time

for him today. He has made his mark. Kent keeps it in. Ryan Kent with the

shot. Stewart has Brannagan calling for it

on the edge of the box. That is a clever ball by Brannagan to Benteke.

Olejnik thought about coming to try to catch it. It is put behind. More

pressure from the rubble, good, patient build-up. Jurgen Klopp will

be delighted by the reaction of these young players, even if it was

a touch fortunate. Smith's corner. Stewart was trying to get onto it.

Trying to find Kent. Put away by Noble. What a turnaround. The

celebrations were still going on behind Bobby Olejnik's goal. Yes,

they seem to leave it to each other. Nobody wants responsibility for the

equaliser. A big boost for the young lads of Liverpool. Trying to regain

some confidence and a foothold in the game. Especially for that young

man. Liverpool's youngest ever player when he made his debut at

West Brom just over three years ago, six days after his 16th birthday.

The path of football has not exactly run smoothly for him since then,

this is his fourth game. He has been talked about a lot from long time

but he has not hit the heights people expected. Sometimes young

players take a while to develop. That goal could be a springboard for

him. He certainly took it well enough. Looking at some of the

Liverpool players making their debut, Stewart and Kent tonight. It

was on this day in 1997 that Jamie Carragher made his debut for the

rubble. I can't see any of the trio starting tonight playing 337 times

for the club! Teixeira has impressed when he has

had the ball. Yes. Sinclair. He took his goal. Teixeira has found the

ball again. It is deflected. It came off Brown. Another Liverpool corner.

Good feet from Teixeira. Really good skill. Confidence on the ball. I was

speaking with a friend of mine at Brighton when he was there on loan

and he was impressive there. Ryan Kent is waiting to collect it after

round came in the first 12 minutes. Tom Nichols striking first four

not get his head up to see him and he took too long and it's an Exeter

City goal kick. Coming down the left-hand side with Bradley Smith,

we talked about his willingness to keep getting forward. The Exeter

team are struggling at the moment. Allowing Liverpool the easy get out

ball to him down the left-hand side. Here is Tillson. It is sliced. You

may recognise his surname, he is the son of Andy Tillson who was a player

at Bristol Rovers for a long time and a short time the assistant to

Paul Tisdale here. I once played cricket with Paul Tisdale for the

Lord's Taverners and I have to say that he bats as stylishly as he

dresses. He made 50 odd in that game which is 50 more than me. It's a

good job you're a good commentator! Lets not get into that debate!

CHUCKLES Jose Enrique is forced to put it out

of play. Noble nearest to the thrower. Tries

to come across for it. He gets it clear. It's a strain -- strange

touch by Benteke but he finds a team-mate. Stewart was making a

powerful run past Jerome Sinclair. We have talked a lot about the youth

in the Liverpool team. Brad Smith 21, Teixeira and Stewart are 22,

quite old to be just getting into the team. It's a combination of bad

luck and circumstance sometimes. The demands for success means that you

can't risk teenagers any more really. Now is the time for some of

these lads to make a stake otherwise they will have to move on somewhere

else and try to get some first-team experience. You can't play in the

reserves, under-21 football for too many years. Exeter's throw. Straight

to Jordan Moore-Taylor. He has got plenty of time. Kent had to be quick

and he was. And then he is taken out by Noble. Not a particular Noble

challenge liked Oriel it is good play actually. -- not a particularly

Noble challenge! He was impressive whilst on loan at Coventry. You can

see that he has got talent. They have had a good teacher in Tony

Mowbray. He plays good football. Yes. When players go out on loan

from a big club it is important that they go somewhere with a similar

philosophy. Brad Smith with the Liverpool throw in. Exeter took the

lead in the ninth minute and since then most of the game has been

played in their half. Randall is on the move. He will stay

forward for the throw in conceded by Jordan Moore-Taylor.

Stewart is bundled over. It was more of a collision than a challenge. Tom

Nichols responsible for it. There is a chance for Cameron

Brannagan to find a telling ball in. This is a great opportunity to get

some quality in for Benteke. He plays it short. Something different.

Not the best to edges but he recovers well. It is not a bad

effort. It is still a strange choice when you have the pen -- the power

of Benteke. I would put it in the box every time. That is on. When you

have a quality that Benteke has got area league, you have to get the

ball in the box. There was some question about whether Olejnik got

his hand to that. That was Randall's claim. That was not the best

clearance with his feet although it has come off for Exeter. Foreword by

Alex Nicholls to Tom Littles. Foreword comes Ribeiro. It is

stopped by Tiago Ilori. Well, Tom Nichols' pace causing problems

again. -- played forward by Alex Nicholls to Tom Nichols. When he was

coming through at Sporting Lisbon he was said to be the quickest to come

out of the academy. When you think that they have had Ronaldo and Nani

in there. That is a fair point. Illori climbs to headed away. The

flag is up. Just talking about Tiago Ilori. It's an interesting case in

point, ?7 million when Liverpool brought him from Sporting Lisbon in

December 2014, he has been on loan in Spain and was in France last

season and nowhere near the Aston Villa first team this season. It is

curious. Quite a few transfers at Liverpool have been curious in

recent years. They have brought in players who have never really done

anything. That is one aspect of the club that Jurgen Klopp will want to

tweak a little bit. They have not had enough success in the transfer

market, it's as simple as that. Their injury problems, particularly

in defence, you would expect to see Jurgen Klopp dipping into the market

this month. The problem is finding the quality of players that you want

because good players usually don't leave clubs at this stage. He

certainly was not impressed with that bit of quality. Randall closes

down. The problem Exeter have had since scoring is that they play an

obvious 4-1- 3-2 and it means they are really narrow. The full-backs

are always on and it's an easy get out ball. So they might have to

tweak that a little bit otherwise they will be under a lot of

pressure. Tom Nichols wins them a free kick here. Wearing number ten,

they do have an orthodox winger on the field to bring some width. This

will be all about, it would seem, Woodman getting the ball into the

middle. I would not blame them at all. Nicely lifted by Craig Woodman.

The referee could not see a great deal through the crowd but his

assistant helped him out. Goalkick. It's a decent ball in actually. Just

teasing the keeper who does not come. I think it was Jordan

Moore-Taylor who plays it wide. He cannot quite get over the ball. The

president of the FA Greg Dyke is here alongside the clapping Exeter

chairman, Taylor. The Exeter chairman, but it is

purely a figurehead role because the club is run by supporters trust and

it has been for 13 years, this is its 13th year now.

Jose-Maria. Benteke. Nicely down to Kent. Taylor gets in his way. Noble

away. Tiago Ilori finds Brannagan. He was trying to just knock the easy

ball upfield and it was cut out and he can't stop Exeter from breaking

the first time but he does the second time.

Reid almost gets onto it. Noble has. Liverpool's defence seemed a little

slow to react there. David Noble wasn't, he was quick enough. Crosses

into the box causing problems again. I'm not sure if Noble is claiming a

penalty therefore the late challenge. I think it was well after

the ball had gone. But it was another positive move down the

right-hand side for Exeter. Where they have already some joy. The lads

in the studio were talking about Liverpool's vulnerability on

crosses. Even when they have got everybody fit they struggle at

times. Exeter have caused problems for them already this evening with

good balls into the box. It seems strange to see Jurgen Klopp

who we have seen at brassieres Dortmund and Anfield, with the tops

of houses in the background! That is why we love this tournament.

Brad Smith is on now. They are so narrow in midfield. Despite the lack

of space Teixeira uses it well. He has done well with that touch.

Randall has gone round the outside. Kent needed to use him, really.

Ilori missed it. That is a good run by Kent. There

are three waiting for him. Brown steers it away for Exeter. That is a

superb pass. Great run, but what a pass. The first time we have seen

his vision and creativity. A good ball into the box. It is played over

the crossbar by Troy Brown this time. Not really under significant

pressure, but Exeter are. Another good ball in, Brannagan again. A

couple of little glimpses of what he can offer as an attacking force

going forward and in midfield. Brannagan's corner. This time it is

away from danger. Jose Enrique. Benteke got his head

on it but only to flick it behind. We have started our third round at

Exeter. Football Focus tomorrow comes live from Eastleigh at ten

He did enough, but it was more Randall's own doing that led to the

break down of the Liverpool attack. Still a party atmosphere right

around St James' Park. Why wouldn't it be? This is the first time Exeter

have been in the third round since 2004/05 and that famous draw at Old

Trafford, 11 years ago today. Amazing result. I remember it well.

They've got to try and sort this problem out. The full backs are

getting the ball high up so easily they're just on the back four.

That's probably what they're talking about, what he was talking about

there. Until they solve that, they are going to be having less of the

ball than Liverpool, for sure. Kevin Stewart has been neat and tidy when

he's had the ball, a holding man for Liverpool.

A tight spot for that to come off, it might have done though.

Exeter City 1, Liverpool 1, in the Emirates FA Cup third round. 11

minutes to go until halftime. He's lost his boot. One on target

each. One goal each, 100%. That's probably about a fair reflection on

the first half, though Liverpool have had the better possession. I

think Moore-Taylor was trying to stall for time a bit. His team-mate

had lost a boot. And with the pitch being as it is, you're going to get

those type of passes. A lot more brown than green than there was at

kickoff. I'm surprised anybody, anywhere in

the country will be surprised to learn it was raining in Devon today,

probably most other places today. Takes you back to when you were

playing. Yes, it does. It's where you learn your trade, take a few

whacks along the way, test your control. There's nothing wrong with

going a bit longer, back to front, earlier.

When the pitches are like this, it's no disgrace to try to play to your

bigger target men or play behind for the quicker runners. Perhaps under

scrutiny on crosses, Bogdan, after his mistake at Watford just before

Christmas, his Liverpool Premier League debut. Didn't go that well,

did it? Enrique, well out of the first-team

picture at Liverpool. Hasn't played since the Fourth Round against

Bolton last January. Surprised me a little bit. I always thought he was

a talented fullback, good footballer, OK, not the most mobile.

They've only got Moreno really that's played in that position for

most of the season, I thought maybe could have pushed him a little bit

more. Obviously, he hasn't been training well enough or been fit

enough to push Moreno. Opportunity for him now, though, with the big

games coming up in the next week or two. He's had a fair few problems

with his knees has Enrique. Brad Smith seems to have taken over

from the Spaniard in terms of deputising for Moreno.

Exeter leading and playing with all the enthusiasm and adrenaline that a

night like this, in front of their home crowd would give them. Then

Liverpool took control for 15, 20 main i.s now it's an -- minutes. Now

it's an even contest. I couldn't agree more. Teixeira has been a

plus. He's shown really nice touches and confident play on a poor pitch.

Brad Smith down the left-hand side has been a constant outlet for

Liverpool. As the halve's worn on, I think young Brannagan's started to

show his quality. Exeter have done well as well. They've broken well.

They've caused problems getting in the wide positions, especially down

the right-hand side. Deflected. Not significantly enough

to force Olejnik all over the place. He got down to save. Yeah, it's a

decent effort. I'm not sure if it came off Sinclair or Brown.

Took the momentum out of the shot. Liverpool's two experienced

substitutes are enjoying their night out in deepest Devon. I think

they'll be hoping the young lads can put on a performance and win the

game and that they're not called upon.

That skewed awkwardly into the gloves of Olejnik. I say that on the

basis that if they are called upon, you'd think Liverpool would be in

trouble. It's wide! Christian Ribeiro coming

in from right back. That must have been close. Oh, it was close. Well

worked down the left-hand side, that was. What a quality cross this is

from Holmes. He's come in from the right back position, Ribeiro. Oh,

you're talking a foot, maybe less. Another quality cross causing

problems for Liverpool. Lee Holmes has been good down the left side,

when he's got good possession of the ball he can put good quality into

the box. Tom Nichols has impressed. Lee

Holmes has when he's had the chance. To -- chance to.

Exeter well and truly in this. For sure. Just as we predicted, it's

close. It's going to be tight. Ribeiro claims he was blocked. The

assistant referee couldn't have been better placed to agree with him.

Yeah, it's Teixeira. I'm not sure he did too much wrong there if I'm

honest. A tad fortunate to get a free kick. A wonderful opportunity

to put another quality ball into the box. In trouble, that young defence.

Last Saturday, 2-0 defeat at West Ham for Liverpool. Two goals from

crosses. Perhaps the comparison isn't a fair one with two different

teams on the field. No, it isn't. But if someone's putting quality

balls in, it's hard to go fend against. It's an obvious tactic -

defend. The fans behind the goal trying to

spur Exeter on to even greater efforts from the break.

That will be a corner. Rnchts done well the last ten minutes, Exeter.

Little triangles, round the edge of the box. Getting higher up the

pitch. Only Tom Nichols in the penalty area

at the moment. They need the ball first.

Liverpool fans behind the goal. Not the sort of setting they're used

to in following their team. You'd be surprised, those fans have been all

over Europe. There's worse places than this. Bogging about's

struggling. It's gone in. Straight in.

On the stroke of halftime, Exeter have the lead again.

And Adam Bogdan has been beaten direct from a corner.

Unbelieverable. Unbelievable. Unbelievable goal. Lee Holmes

straight in. The goalkeeper's made an awful mess

of it. He has. You're right. There is a little bit going on with

Nichols and him on the line. You've got to be stronger. Liverpool hit

back straight away again? You can't be bullied by a striker, smaller

than you, weaker than you. Get one of your defenders involved and push

him out of the way. He claimed he was fouled against

Watford as well. I don't think he has any sort argument there. None of

his team-mates joined in. The under-pressure Hungarian keeper

again. What an end to an intriguing first

half at St James' Park. It's ended as it started with Exeter in front,

first time round they weren't in front for long. Tom Nichols scored

in the ninth minute. Jerome Sinclair equalised. What an end to the half.

Lee Holmes. STUDIO: That was all right, wasn't

it? What an exciting first half. Exeter have given themselves a real

chance. Absolutely fantastic first 45 minutes of cup football. I was

just about to say at halftime, if they hadn't have scored, that will

they regret missing the two big chances they had. They've done

everything right in that first half. Showed great passion for it. The

crowds up for it. It's been a brilliant 45 minutes. Quite an

initiation for some of these young Liverpool players. I think so. They

would have been pressed a lot more, I thought. They have had a lot of

space to play in. 60% possession in the first half. They've only had two

shots on target. They're not really doing too much to trouble Exeter,

for me. We highlighted the importance of crosses before the

game. Blimey, if ever there was evidence that suggested that was

right, this was it. . We also highlighted that Liverpool have to

put crosses into the box. That ball has to go in there, as we said

before, it doesn't go in and it turns into nothing. Look at the

difference between Liverpool and Exeter. Right land side, almost

identical position. Good ball in and that is one hell of a finish, it

really is to slot that into the corner, it's ewe Paddy Ashdown. Run

-- it's superb. The manager said to me, they're going to get the ball

into the box because Liverpool has problems. That show that's. Good

management. They didn't hold the lead for long, three-and-a-half

minutes. It was one of those, they must have still been on a bit of a

high. It was a mistake. They have to clear it there. To be fair,

Sinclair's taken it well. He's reacted quickly. You look at the

centre half, I think Brown, that's got to go. There it is, just go,

clear your lines. You get punished. Sinclair's done well to react has

edid to punish them. -- as he did to punish them. One player has to take

responsibility and get rid of it. Don't mess around in the 18-yard

box. They had a couple of chances, Exeter. What about this. It's an

unusual goal. It's gone pretty much straight in from a corner. We

highlighted the fact that the keeper might be weak at crosses. It's a

good ball in, but it's a massive mistake from the goalkeeper. I know

he's under pressure. He's not putting him under too much pressure.

It's a massive error. Big mistake. We highlighted balls into the box

because whether it's him or Mignolet, they have problems dealing

with them. This is what Exeter should be doing. They should put

more balls over the top to Nichols to run in the back of Enrique. But

that is brilliant play from the Exeter squad and manager. They've

looked at Liverpool's weaknesses. You can tell, at every opportunity

that's what they're doing, putting balls into the box. Liverpool cannot

defend them. We have one or two more examples of exactly that coming up

now. This was a really good

opportunities. Oh, what a chance, yeah. We're sat here thinking this

is it. He's onto it quickly, but anywhere else on the pitch, if

that's a pass in the middle of the park, afterwards the referee goes

back to that. It's the follow through, though. He gets the ball.

But I hear what you're saying, but that could be a foul. But I think

he's had the chance to hit the shot. I don't think it matters. It's

irrelevant. If that's in the mid. Park, the -- Middle of the park, the

referee pulls that back. Ribeiro header as well was close. That was a

super cross. Super cross. When this gets laid out to him, he's just fed

that in. Look at this. Beautiful. I think it's come down low for

Ribeiro. He's trying to get into the goalkeeper's post there. He's

stooping down for it. All he has to do there is get anything on target

there. Anything on target for this goalkeeper you're going to cause him

problems. He's very nervy. That is another great chance. We're

thinking, put those chances away. That goal was so important as well.

Liverpool we know Klopp likes to play a high-pressing game, get his

players attacking, how do you play against that? One of the ways is

because they commit so many men forward into the high press, you can

see both the forwards go there, Sinclair, Benteke goes. This is how

you get round it, or one of the reasons, kick it long. Look how many

players are out of the game. The two forwards, four midfielders are out

of the game. They can't get back. All a sudden, because of one long

pass, you're now into the Liverpool final third and you're getting a

ball into the box. It's brilliant play also from Exeter. Are you

advocating long-ball football? No, I'm not. You don't have to do that

all the time. This is one of the ways. No, don't say that. Yes, we

are advocating it in this particular game against this particular

Liverpool side. They're not just a long ball team, Exeter. They can

play football. It's a difficult pitch to do it on. That's one of the

options how to get round the press. It's all to play for. Our next live

FA Cup football comes on Sunday: two of the Premier League's top four go

head to head and Spurs take on Leicester. It's a repeat of the 1961

final which featured a young Welshman, who would go on to become

a Tottenham legend. Gareth Bale they call him the Welsh

dream to score in a Wembley Cup Final. Here was this young Welsh lad

doing it. The linesman had his flag up and offside. That was the end of

my dream. Bob was in the penalty box, he was lethal. Bobby Smith

seized his chance. Goal! For Spurs that goal was just what the doctor

ordered. It was a great header for Terry Dyson, a player who scored

important goals. The proudest footballer on earth as he ran up to

the Royal Box to receive the cup from the Duchess of Kent. Spurs had

won the double. When we started going on the tour down Tottenham

high road, well, it was just, amazing everywhere we went, well

hundreds of thousands of people along the Tottenham high road. I'll

never forget it, just amazing. It was just something which I dreamt

about and now I've achieved it, and hey, how good is that? It's really

good, Cliff. Lovely how the players in those days ran up the steps at

as a chairman do you want a draw. If I had a pound for every time

somebody said that, I wouldn't need the draw. It would be lovely to get

something out of the Graham. The intention ridge -- out of the game.

The intention originally was to put on a good show for the club and the

supporters on and off the pitch. If we get something out of it that's a

bonus in every sense of the world - financially for the club, it would

be a huge boost. You know in this game, you see Paul, when that goal

goes in he doesn't get excited. I don't often jump up, at the end is

time. You're happy at halftime? Very happy. This man is nervous. When you

were dreaming last night, were you 2-1 at halftime? 3-1 at halftime.

No, it certainly wasn't. I was impressed the way Dan hit his mark

there. The little Blue Squre there. Jurgen Klopp at halftime is going to

be concerned. What should he do? First, he's got to tell his full

backs to get closer to both wingers, stop that ball coming into the box.

Then, they might have a chance of getting back into this game. From

Exeter's point of view more of the same. If they ever wanted any

confidence and belief it know that they can get something out of this

game, then look at that 45 minutes and think they've got one hell of a

chance. He's an animated soul. He is. He's always smiling but you tend

to think there's a grimmace underneath all of that. There is at

the moment. Absolutely. His team's got their work cut out. The Exeter

boys know they have a good chance. It's been a fantastic game. I'm

loving it. The Liverpool team already out there. I mean Exeter

perhaps not going to come out at all. There he is, Tisdale. He'll be

very happy. I wonder whether Klopp as been in there and sent them out

early because he is so angry. It will be hard for him to say too much

because as we know, there's a lot of young, inexperienced boys out there.

So this is a great learning curve for them. If they can pick it up

quickly, get a grasp of it, have a feel for first-team football, they

can only improve their performance not only here tonight but for the

future also. We saw Ade there who said definitely either a draw or a

win. He's got half a chance. The longer they can keep it like this -

we're saying that, it could have been 3-#1, easily, if they can get

it to the last couple of minutes and they're still 2-1, even if Liverpool

score, they can't lose. I think the one of the positives for Liverpool

is Kent in the first half. He got the ball. He was pacy. He ran at

players, tried to get the ball in the box. Showed great enthusiasm. He

was a plus point in the first half. Danny Murphy pointing out the fact

that Liverpool were getting joy down the flanks because Exeter were

playing so narrow. Will he adjust something there, Tisdale? I think

he's got to. They're not getting on the ball as much as they could do.

Like when you consider Liverpool had 60% possession in the first half, a

lot of that has to do with the fact that the full backs had so much

possession. They've had the ball in those positions but not done a lot

with it. The crowd are loving this and so are we. Hope you are too.

rude to keep your guests waiting. Exeter plan on carrying on being not

particularly welcoming for the next 45 minutes. Paul Tisdale with a

lovely turn of phrase in the week leading up to this game, "a high

quality problem". Haven't his team given Liverpool one. Liverpool came

out early. I've been thrown out of dressing rooms early with the lads

to get out there and sort yourselves out. You run around and get

yourselves going. They're standing chatting. Any way.

Can't afford to stand around now with Exeter leading by 2-1. Just to

put a little bit of thought on what that might mean tonight. If they

keep it that way, they haven't reached the Fourth Round since the

1980/81 season. In that Fourth Round back then, that was also the last

time they beat a side from the top division. It was Gary Lineker's

Leicester. Although Mr Lineker didn't play. Oh, that's why! The

lads in the studios made a good point. Liverpool had good

possession, but they've got to get the ball in the box more. It was

man who will get them back into it for sure. One of Exeter's best-known

Did Reid have to throw him over the hoardings? Perhaps not. No. No, he

didn't. The intention is there and that is

the main thing. He could have put it in ten yards before because Benteke

made a good run again. The problem is that when you fast with the ball

it is difficult to produce good quality. He needed to slow down a

little bit. Olejnik away. Played out. The mistake by Alex

Nicholls. Well, here is the moment that gave Exeter the lead for the

second time in the game. Horrendous error. No excuses. You have got to

do better. I'm surprised there was no man on the post. I do seem to say

that a lot these days when I'm watching football. But a man on the

spotlight on Bogdan, there have been questions about whether he is the

right man to stand by for Simon Mignolet if he's injured. He's not

at the moment. Mitty is certainly needs better competition to push him

more because he has certainly not been good enough. There are

questions about him. Huge questions. I would be amazed if Liverpool don't

have a new keeper by the start of next season to be honest. It goes

through to Bogdan. Ten minutes played in the second

half, make that 11, and still no difference in terms of Liverpool

comeback this time. Smith keeps it in but gives it to Nichols. That's a

nice touch by Jamie we eat. Can he feed Tom Nichols? Not quite. Exeter,

we talked about in the first half. Enrique using the pace of the

That will go out. Paul Tisdale is I think contemplating a change. David

Noble's race is run. I would not take him off. He has quality and

he's calm on the ball and he will keep possession. I don't know about

his fitness levels but he still looks fine and his quality on the

ball is evident. Tom Nichols with a run into the box. Lee Holmes has won

the corner for Exeter. And Exeter are on top in terms of the current

state of the game and the scoreline right now. Half an hour to go, 2-1

down, Exeter. I'm amazed he hasn't brought an substitutes. What is the

point of bringing Adam Lallana? At least this one should not curl

straight in. But goes Pedro Chirivella. -- and he goes.

debate it has been given as an Exeter throw in. I expected Exeter

to be on the back foot in the second half but it has not been the case at

all. Is that the Exeter positive mindset but also Liverpool

deficiencies? I would not say deficiency Matt is a clear lot of

these lads have started a game for the first time and there is a

nervous energy that comes with that. From him too? Yes. And Exeter, you

can see their quality, that's it cup final. -- this is their cup final.

He is getting to grips with him, outside the area. He was holding him

off and finally could not any longer. It's not just it but it

looks as though it might be a yellow card for Ilori. Will the referee go

to his pocket? Maybe not. He gets his body in really well. There is

not much in it to be honest, probably the right decision. A

little bit sloppy, defending, by Ilori. Just to confirm there was no

start since November and he played pretty well and might have scored

Very close to it. Both very close to being offside and one or both of

centre-back in emergencies. We might have to see him there again in the

against the run of play but what a finish it was from the young lad. It

is a slip here. Not the best clearance but didn't he take it

half and it's a super finish. Instinctive finish from the

fortunate but what that should do now is give them the confidence in

to play behind him more often. Often.ive would imagine they'll be

taking him off shortly. He just can't move. I will draw your

attention to the fact that Liverpool with making their third change. It's

19-year-old Joe Maguire who is the latest Liverpool debutantes. It is

Thiago Ilori who's had to make way. He had to. He's a liability. He

couldn't move. A Manchester lad. Three Manchester

lads in the side. He's been on Liverpool's books since he was nine.

That's all right then! Ojo fouled. You could hear the

Liverpool fans behind that goal appealing. Troy Brown penalised. He

has a little kick at him there. That's the right decision.

Can you hear the Liverpool fans now. From thinking about an enormous

shock, they can now be thinking about winning it in the last 12

minutes. Benteke will have to play the full 90. All substitutions

played. Smith at the moment delivering

Liverpool from upset. Quite a lot too high by Kevin

This is not over yet. It is still Exeter's night because you heard

what their fans were saying before the match, draw or a win. A draw

would feel like a win. Maybe not in the circumstances having led for so

long. There's another substitution coming on. I don't know what he's

going to do tactically. There must be something in his head thinking do

I go with five at the back and five in midfield and keep what we've got

and get to Anfield. Do we leave the two up top and try to get the

winner? I know what I'd be tempted to do.

Here is the third Exeter change. It's going to be Lee Holmes, the man

who lit the tie up with his goal direct from a corner. He started the

second half beautifully too. He's had a good game, another one. A man

who was once a boy when he started in the FA Cup. He was at the time

the youngest prayer in the FA Cup proper at Derby at 15. He has his

place taken by Joel Grant. He scored three goals since signing for Exeter

at the summer, all away from home. Now would be a very opportune time

to start scoring at home. The ideal scenario is a draw. You could

theoretically beat Liverpool and get a team from a lower leagues in the

next round. Sheyi Ojo has looked lively. He's

done well since he's come on. He's made a difference.

Liverpool have played all their substitution cards. Here we go

again, injuries for Liverpool. This is what happened at Stoke on Tuesday

with Kolo Toure finishing the game when he ought not to have done.

Struggling with a hamstring, which meant that he missed tonight's game.

Can Brad Smith carry on till the end now? Back to his feet at least, as

those fans look on nervously. He seems like a tough lad to me.

On a heavy pitch, legs are tiring on both sides. They are. Credit

deserves to be given to the young lads at Liverpool and Exeter,

because they've certainly all put it in, all contributed. A wonderful

You would think with all the fixtures that Liverpool have

mounting this month, a replay would be all they need.

Well even more so that you put someone like Lallana on to give the

magic to win the game. It's baffling to me at 2-1 down for so long that

he didn't bring him on. Then at 2-2 he didn't bring him on then because

he had already made the substitutions. I suppose he trusts

the young lads. He'll say that. Especially if they get a result.

Whether it's a replay or a win. He can go home reasonably happy knowing

that they're still in the cup. These young Liverpool players might

well get a run out in front of the cop, too. Yes, some of them for

sure. Still time for either side to find a

winner, though the game has broken down somewhat.

For what it might bring to this club, I'd like to see Exeter get

their day at Anfield. I think they deserve it. I think the financial

rewards it would bring would be beneficial, hugely beneficial to

everybody at the club. They will make ?144,000 from this game being

televised live. If you get through the third round, it's almost half

that again. That sort of money at this level of

the game makes a massive difference. 11 years ago those two games against

Manchester United did effectively save the club from disappearing all

together. It's not just about the money, though. The chance for these

lads to go to Anfield and play at such a wonderful stadium. Brad Smith

again. Fancied his luck. Why not. I like him. I like his confidence.

First time I saw him play, I liked him. He's got a tenacity about his

play. He has a real confidence in the way he goes forward. He tries to

make things happen. I like him a lot. He's another one who nearly got

away. He only resigned for the club in November after failing to agree a

deal last summer. Really? Does Anfield beckon for the League

Two team? Or is there still a chance of going straight into the Fourth

Round on their own? They've got four minutes minimum. Olejnik saw that

developing. Sheyi Ojo set off like a train.

Spotted the danger well there. The goalkeeper has had a good evening as

well. Brilliant from Brannagan, absolutely

superb. Tracked the run, last minute, exactly what you want your

midfielder to do. Exeter corner.

This is going to sounds ridiculous, I'm an Exeter player, if we win this

game, I miss out on the opportunity at playing at Anfield.

I don't think any of them are thinking that. No, I know they're

not. It's just me, isn't it? They're thinking Fourth Round. They're

thinking headlines, the glory of beating one of the greatest names in

the game. It will be one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history.

Fouled. Well, we have played nearly two minutes of injury time. Your

nomination for the man of the match. An easy decision. I think Tom

Nichols has been absolutely superb from minute one. He's shown quality.

He's shown endeavour. He's been a real threat. I think he'll be

playing at a higher level very soon. He's a super talent. He deserved his

goal. Man of the match for me tonight. The man who scored the

first goal of this season's FA Cup third round. Brad Smith has scored

the latest but couldn't get through there. An Exeter free kick. One

thing we won't expect from any Paul Tisdale team is for them to try and

run down the clock. He has been quoted as saying in his ten years at

the club he has never once uttered the words, "Take it to the corner."

Well, that's a bit silly, if I'm honest, but each to their own. There

are times when that definitely needs to happen.

Exeter fans taking it to the end. Moore-Taylor clears it. It took an

eternity for them to get it clear. You could sense the relief in the

ground when he kicked it out of play.

Can't be long now. Heading towards the last half minute

or so. That's the minimum, isn't it. Somehow they sometimes find a bit

extra sometimes. And it's finished at St James' Park,

all square between the League Two team and the Premier League giants.

11 years ago, Exeter took Manchester United toe a replay -- to a replay.

The money made from the two ties kept the club in existence. Things

aren't quite so draft thick time, but a trip to Anfield will feel like

a lottery win to start the new year. For Liverpool, another game in this

crowded January with so many players missing, it is far from ideal, but

they have learned something about the future tonight. Jurgen Klopp's

kids are all right. Exeter City 2, Liverpool 2.

STUDIO: Not a bad start to the Emirates FA Cup third round weekend,

a cracking cup tie and a night to remember in the West Country, what a

fabulous effort by Exeter and a marvellous result. They've got

themselves a replay at Anfield. They showed Great Endeavour and tactical

ladder and thoroughly deserved the replay. A brilliant 94, 95 minutes

of football, whatever it was, from start to finish, it was

we do any way, we're old enough to, 11 years ago what it did for them

then when they drew Manchester United. Liverpool, the experience

the kids will get from this game tonight, you can play under 21 games

or you can play in League Two for whatever, but the experience will

get from this will carry them on the rest of their careers. A great

normally this full, but different class for the last four, five games,

which we haven't won. Credit to them. Atmosphere was unbelievable.
