Third Round Highlights - Saturday The FA Cup

Good evening.

Exeter set the tone for the Reds FA Cup third round last night,

by holding Klopp's kids to draw, and we have 25 more matches

for you with plenty of drama guaranteed.

In the studio, a man whose overhead kick for QPR it's part of FA Cup

folklore and an FA Cup winner in Mark Lawrenson.

One game didn't survive the weather - Newport against Blackburn -

and there was real concern at the ground of the only non-league

team left in the competition - Eastleigh.

The aptly named Silverlake Stadium was treated to all manner of drying

treatments, some more successful than others,

before their match against bottom of the Championship Bolton

was finally given the go-ahead.

Tony Husband donned his wellington boots and squelched his way

to the commentary box.

Hundreds of volunteers, some of them Bolton fans,

have helped get this game on.

There were numerous pitch inspections by the referee

through the morning, and finally the go-ahead,

but parts of the surface are a cause for concern.

The home manager Chris Todd can call upon plenty of league experience.

I'm not going to pull any punches, we really did.

I know from my own experience as a player, I've been on the end

of a couple of giant killings, this was never going to be an easy

tie to negotiate.

away with it still in the hat and we have managed to do it.

It was only at 1:30pm the game was given the go-ahead

and the pitch wasn't great.

I know what Jurgen Klopp would have made, he was moaning about Exeter,

he wouldn't have liked that.

You must have played on worse pitches in your time?

Yes, I was smiling when Neil Lennon and said it was a great leveller.

Believe me, that's the way it used to be.

difficult, nothing like the billiard tables you look used to playing

on and it took Bolton a while to get going.

Eastleigh made the most of conditions early

on and they certainly used the pitch to their advantage.

You see it in non-league all the time.

The National League side plate adapted to the conditions well

and went out with a game plan.

Chris Todd, the manager of Eastleigh, has told them clearly,

get the ball wide, get balls into the box and see what Bolton can

do it and early doors they did that really well.

Bolton looked uncomfortable on a lot of occasions.

They could have scored one or two goals before they actually did break

the defence and get in.

Again, you can see no other force in the minds of the players,

get it in the six yard box.

Very direct.

This one is a peach of a ball by Reason,

great, great area to aim for and Dervite doesn't know

what to do.

He is not sure what is behind him.

He sticks a lead out and it goes into the back of his net and it's

a great start by the Eastleigh.

Confident, there wasn't a huge gulf between them at all.

In the second half you could see Bolton getting to grips

with conditions and causing problems for Flitney,

who had a fantastic game.

Yes, you have to give credit to Neil Lennon,

he said it was too boggy, really bad conditions and we need

to start playing it longer and more direct and they did that really well

and started asking questions of Eastleigh defends,

time and time again.

For whatever reason, Flitney didn't feel like he wanted

to let the ball go in the back of his net and made some

absolutely fantastic saves.

Really difficult as well, keepers will appreciate this,

Fantastic ability, deserves all the plaudits he will get.

He was understudy at Fulham and has had a real journey since then,

he's in his early 30s.

What this competition does, you start wondering why those kinds

of players and fair, when they were in what was done

Premier side.

Absolutely, you hear stories like that all the time

and for whatever reason it's not worked out for them,

they've ended up going down a few divisions and enjoying the football

and thinking why should I stride so much to get back there when I'm

enjoying my football.

I don't want to be a stick in the mud, but we need to talk

about conditions a bit more because it didn't always work

for Eastleigh, did it?

There were moments where perhaps the ball might have travelled

further were it not for conditions.

They have carved out a fantastic opportunity,

a good save for the goalkeeper when it looked like it would go over

the line, and with a slick pitch that had a great chance

of going over the line but it stuck in the mud and the player recovered

well, you can see him, number 31, he cleared the lines.

That's one occasion when the pitch went against the home side.

One excited gentleman entered the field of play.

The other thing is Bolton will be glad of the replay,

because of their financial difficulties as much as Eastleigh.

We know Eastleigh will benefit massively from the replay,

which came because of this.

round romance, you'll enjoy this next crop of matches.

We'll start at the Hawthorns, where Tony Pulis picked a full

strength West Brom side to face Championship Bristol City -

in the hope perhaps that they wouldn't appear quite

so close to the top of the running order on Match Of The Day.

of their last FA Cup success in 1968 that may be why Pulis wanted to play

We wanted to win, we did win, a fantastic feeling.

It's been a season of struggle for these two,

which for a club like Peterborough is a lifeline.
