Final: Arsenal v Chelsea The FA Cup

Arsenal. They are coming out to present the trophy. They wave to

both sets of fans. There is the FA Cup that they are all chasing this

afternoon. Such a strong favourite, Chelsea, quite unusual. Chelsea

against Arsenal, you would think it would be quite even. That doesn't

block to be the case, prior to playing? Not at all. Particularly

with the problems Arsenal have got, defensively, also with the attack

that Chelsea have in Costa, Pedro, Hazard, I think they will go for

them in the first 15 or 20 minutes and target that. Big Sol looking in

good shape. Looking very regal! Proud moment for those two. How

should Chelsea approach the game? Like they have done the rest of the

season? You can't underestimate it, Conte is right, Arsenal can hurt

you. If they can stop the ball is getting into Hazard, Pedro, Costa,

they have a chance. Chelsea have to keep doing what they have done all

season. When Chelsea have their spell, with this makeshift back

three, I'm not sure how Arsenal will keep them out. I haven't seen that

all season. Yes, they did well against City in the semifinal,

Arsenal rode their luck a little bit, I don't think Chelsea will give

them the opportunity to do that. They have too much quality, too many

players, playing well. It will be tough for Arsenal, given the

defensive problems. How do they cope with that? That is what they are up

against. When you have guys with the ability of Sanchez, Ozil, Welbeck,

on the day they can produce the goods. That is always the danger for

Chelsea. What have Chelsea been doing for the last six or seven

days? Have they been partying too much, have they taken their eye off

the ball? I doubt it, but there is the small possibility. Still a

special thing to win? And credible, it's still got the magic. It's been

a good year for the FA Cup and you can sense that. It looks like we are

getting close to the official proceedings.

Well, the teams are in the tunnel and we are almost ready for them to

walk out. Just time to get a view predictions in. Going with Arsenal?

Absolutely. Heart or head? A mixture. A big game, David and

Goliath atmosphere for the players and I think they have to show what

they are made of. I think a lot of it depends for the club. They need

this. Can convey either man that wins the double? It is within

touching distance and I think they have the players. Great support for

both sides. Two big clubs about to go out. Chelsea, I think there will

have too much going forward for that makeshift Arsenal back three. The

final of the FA Cup. Arsenal against Chelsea, with Danny Murphy and Guy

Mowbray. Good afternoon, everyone. We are all

set for the 136th FA Cup final. First played at a cricket ground,

around which gathered 2000 spectators, paying admission of a

selling dilemma Curt Schilling to see two teams of amateurs, playing

with 2-2-6 formations. All very different now, as the finely tuned

professionals of Arsenal and Chelsea performing front of 90,000.

Fundamentally, it is the same event. After this sorrowful week, perhaps

there is something to come from a whole nation gathering to enjoy the

most traditional of sporting occasions. The first minute's

tradition says the dignitaries being introduced to the two sides by the

respective captains. His Royal Highness, the Duke of Cambridge,

President of the essay, making -- President of the FA, making

acquaintance with Arsenal's players. The Duke of Cambridge, joined by

Greg Dyke, said Tim Clark, the President of Emirates airlines, and

John Nixon, the chairman of the Challenge Committee. Prince William

is an Aston Villa fan, but said he grew up surrounded by Manchester

United and Chelsea fans. No doubt some of his friends have given him

the lowdown on some of the players he is meeting now.

The two most successful FA Cup teams of this century are well used to

this. Now they come and wait, will stand for the national anthem, led

by Emily Haig, backed by the band of the Royal Logistics Corps.

You can maybe see the fireworks going off in the background, adding

to the heat inside the stadium on what is already a stifling Wembley

afternoon. Antonio Conte leads his players down

the line of Arsenal players. Let's look at the line-ups. David Ospina

plays instead of Petr Cech. Mertesacker captains the Gunners in

his first start all season will stop if his experience could help, Rob

Holding could be the lucky charm, Dave won the last 11 he has played

in. Sanchez is back after a hamstring injury, Danny Welbeck

preferred to Olivier Giroud in attack. Chelsea, you can probably

recite this side. Courtois, behind David Luiz, Gary Cahill, making up

for his missing of the game through injury last time. It is a forward

three that scored 51 goals between them this season.

You only get to referee the FA Cup final once in your career. This

year, the honour falls to Anthony Taylor.

The standout name on the Chelsea bench, is it goodbye and farewell

for ever two John Terry? If he could come onto shore up the back line,

there is not a single defender amongst the Arsenal substitutes.

Danny Murphy is alongside me to enjoy the FA Cup final. Your

namesake, Danny Welbeck, leading the line for Arsenal? I'm a big fan.

Imperative, if they find themselves under the cosh, that when the ball

goes up to him, he holds it up, give the Arsenal players time to join in

and make some attacks. Eden Hazard is sure to be a threat with his

trickery. The Arsenal back three has never played together before? And

unbelievable talent, getting better and better. His fitness levels have

been superb. I am surprised Arsenal have matched them in this formation.

With his pace and trickery on the break, he will find those gaps. I

would have gone with a solid four, myself. Hazard is the Player of the

Season for me, with Kante, for sure. Before the kickoff it's time to pay

our respects to and show our support for all those killed or injured and

the hundreds, thousands who have been selfless in their actions of

assistance since the atrocity in Manchester on Monday night. Wreaths

to be laid by the Duke of Cambridge, by Greg Clarke the FA chairman and

by the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

Thank you, Wembley! A poignant mix of respect, remembrance, pride and

defiance. It's an all-London FA Cup Final. It

is Arsenal against Chelsea at the traditional home of football,

Wembley Stadium. It will be Chelsea to get the action

under way. First kick of the ball is Diego Costa's. Chelsea end the

campaign as double winners? Or can Arsenal just bring a bit of light

back to their supporters, who feel they've had a bad season, having

finished outside the top four for the first time in 20 years.

I suppose, first of all, the main focus will be let's have a look at

how this Arsenal back three is shaping up. Yeah, well Chelsea will

want to test them early. They'll want to test them early

because they haven't played together. Mertesacker's first start,

it's unbelievable really. It will be fascinating to see how they do get

that connection and understanding which is so difficult, even when

you're playing together every week. Oxlade-Chamberlain had a terrific

semifinal here against Manchester City, playing on the other side of

the field. Mertesacker has been out for so long

with a knee injury. He has been on the bench a handful of times this

season in the FA Cup. Came on early on in the second half because of

goodbye's -- goodbye's Gabriel's injury last

weekend. What sort of a game is the undoubted

gifted German, Ozil, going to have? It's a positive start from the

Gunners. They're having good possession. Chelsea obviously doing,

are dropping off exercise which they must have talked about. They're not

pressing too high, which is fine. They quite like that Chelsea. They

did it at Anfield. They're happy to sit back and play on the counter.

Probably at their most dangerous actually.

A corner for Arsenal. Here's where Per Mertesacker could be really

useful. Good play from Sanchez. He's a wonderful footballer. Stats this

season have been incredible. He's the one that can make the difference

for Arsenal in the big games. An easy first claim of the match for

Thibaut Courtois, who is in a hurry to find Kante.

Sanchez is in to score, the flag is up though. Oh, no, it's a goal. He's

not offside. Ramsey didn't get involved because he realised. It's

going to be a goal. Anthony Taylor will go across and have a word with

Gary Beswick, the assistant referee. My instinct is the same as yours.

It's a goal. Whether he gives it or not, it's a goal. Poor play from

Chelsea as well. They were lethargic. Lost out of a couple of

50/50s in front of us. He's got to give the goal. Ramsey looked as

though he was about to touch the ball, then realised he would have

been flagged offside. Then the flag went up. It is 1-0 to Arsenal!

Inside five minutes, Alexis Sanchez amazing Wembley record goes on.

Five goals in five appearances here for Arsenal. He's scored seven in

six all tolled. And he's given the Gunners the lead. The Chelsea

players are arguing. There's nothing to argue about. You'll see it here.

Sanchez plays the first ball. Comes off him again. Maybe they're calling

for handball, I'm not sure. He's certainly not offside. Ramsey must

have got the call from Sanchez in the nick of time. I think he

probably realised himself. This is more the contentious bit, the

handball. A lot of ex-players I know and players who still are playing

don't like the rule, but it's there. Therefore it's a goal. I'd like to

see the handball again. In terms of the offside, there's nothing to

argue about from Chelsea's point of view. There's the first bit of FA

Cup Final drama! Alexis Sanchez gives Arsenal the early advantage.

Chelsea were guilty of switching off. What's the first rule, play to

the whistle. Another bit of drama now with Diego

Costa, perhaps unsurprisingly getting involved. I don't know what

he's doing Costa. It's a foul. He's got the free kick. As he lands he

has a little kick. It's a foul from Holding. He's got hold of his shirt.

Takes him over. You watch Costa. Swinging the lag. Yeah, but there's

no need to do it. Nothing too drastic. Right leg comes over.

You'll see it now. He missed him because he wasn't there. He's a bit

lucky. Headed over the top. By that man, Diego Costa. Costa

Great start for Arsenal. What a game now. Great start to the FA Cup

Final. This time the flag is up in

Chelsea's favour. Just before the goal, Chelsea had a great

opportunity to have a breakaway. Messed it up a bit. They lost the

50/50 and all of a sudden they're a goal down. It was Diego Costa again

who seemed to barge into N'Golo Kante inadvertently.

It's the first time that Chelsea have been behind in the FA Cup all

season. It didn't take long. He got away from the first attempt

to stop him. He couldn't get past the second. There is going to be a

yellow card. For Ramsey. I wonder was it for the

Monreal one or for Ramsey earlier on? For Ramsey. He tried to pull him

back and didn't actually succeed. I think that's good refereeing. Has to

book him. The intent was there. Wasn't Monreal. It was Ramsey who

got booked. Courtois with a slip nearly allowed

Welbeck in. Chelsea aren't settling at all. No, they've not started

brilliantly. They've given up possession a little bit. They won't

panic though. Arsenal are gaining confidence,

that's for sure. In a big game, early in the first ten minutes, you

want to get a few touches, feel your way in. Then you get a goal, of

course, all of a sudden, you've got a spring in your step and everybody

wants the ball. Flag is being waved. Handball

against the Arsenal full-back turned right sided midfielder, as he's been

for the last few games. This suits him this role more than before. He

can fly forward knowing he's got the cover. It's suited Alex

Oxlade-Chamberlain, of course, he's having to play on the other side,

which is a little bit unfamiliar for him. When you're right footed you

want to be on the right-hand side. But he's very adaptable, super

athlete. Not a great start to the Chelsea

owner's evening. Chelsea have won nine of 11 major finals played since

Roman Abramovic took over the club. A really good move from Arsenal that

was, sharp, incisive. What we're used to seeing at Arsenal when they

play their best football. Chelsea need to wake up a little bit. Not

got out of the blocks. Safely back to David Ospina. Antonio

Conte, understandably his usual animated self, early on. Trying to

get them to press, up the pitch, don't blame him. Arsenal, injuries

or not, you can't let them have possession. They are good

footballers. Well, Sanchez and Ozil have started

really well. They are two big players, getting on the ball, nice

touches, confident. Granted, we are only 12 minutes in.

Ozil looked in the mood. He didn't quite get the timing right behind

Aaron Ramsey. Mertesacker, he will want that ball

to come that way all afternoon. That will suit him.

Really good challenge by Azpilicueta, but Chelsea didn't keep

the ball very long. Arsenal are bossing command of the football. It

is possession that Chelsea are struggling with, sloppy passes,

touches. Sanchez wound up the big one.

Courtois knew it was always going to be too high. Quite a few in the

Arsenal and were getting ready to get off their seats to celebrate

another. Superb play from Sanchez. Hell of a strike. A fraction high.

He is an absolutely brilliant footballer, Alexis Sanchez. If he

does leave Arsenal, I can't think of one club that wouldn't want to take

him. Maybe Barcelona. With all the talk of Arsenal's defensive

problems, it was imperative that the main men at the other end, namely

Ozil on Sanchez, were firing today. They are certainly doing that so

far. Costa's effort is smothered by

three. I think it was Monreal, but it was terrific defending.

Hazard's first chance to get involved in the action. Diego Costa

has been involved plenty, if not always for the right reasons. I've

watched Chelsea a few times this season where they haven't been

overly impressive. But they have moments in matches, and players.

What a chance for 2-0! Cleared off the line by Cahill to thwart Mesut

Ozil! Bad touch. What a huge chance for Ozil. He didn't really connect

with it properly. But Arsenal will come again. Cahill, to prevent

another opportunity. They lug heavy legged. I don't know what they've

been doing. This is a bad touch, taking it away from himself. Still

managed to get it on target, but no pace. I think the deflection from

David Luiz helped. A Miss hit shot, turning it a good

pass for Ozil. Customary good tackle from Kante,

but it will be an Arsenal throw. Just scuffs it a little bit. His

touch touch him away from goal. He wanted to take it inside himself.

Great game, end to end. Well, that particular moment was, Chelsea's

first chance, but Arsenal could have gone two, there. A slip from Ozil.

That little passage sums up the Chelsea's start. Sloppy again.

Arsenal, Sharp. Bringing the ball back, keeping the ball well.

Somebody has to get them going. Middle of the park for Chelsea.

He is the man to do it. At a difficult one, this team have been

so dominant. The Fabregas is the type that can control the tempo of

the play. Kante and Matic are both defensive minded, if you like.

Sanchez is giving us a bit of everything he's got.

It is all Arsenal in the FA Cup final. At the moment, they don't

know what to do with Sanchez and Ozil. They are coming in from the

wings, in pockets. The wingbacks are not going with them. Too many

chances. Off the post! Somehow, it bounces

off Ramsey and goes behind. What a chance! They are wondering what

happened, the other end the ground. Good ball in. Welbeck, good head.

Twice, it hits the post. Welbeck almost in again. It was Azpilicueta

that was in his way. He thinks it should be a Chelsea free kick, it is

a goal kick. Kicked him in the back, that's why. It comes off the post,

and Ramsey puts it back onto the post. White Rock you don't see that

very often. Peeled away from Marcos Alonso pretty easily.

Chelsea are riding their luck at the moment.

That will go down in the statistics as Arsenal hitting the post twice.

None of us called this. Fair play to the Arsenal players.

A tester for Azpilicueta, but it will not be caught by Alexis

Sanchez. He has now scored in five games in a row, 34 the season, all

told. The man for the big occasion, goals in the FA Cup quarterfinals,

semifinals and final. It is not just about his talents.

It's about his work ethic, the tenacity he shows, trying to win the

ball back for his team. I like his passion when he gets angry and

frustrated. It doesn't stop working hard. He can play in different

positions, but he is a matchwinner. A game changer.

Can they keep him, I suppose that is the bigger question. There is

reportedly a huge contract offer on the table. Another year left of his

current deal. Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Manchester United,

the usual suspects are circling. That is the most space Chelsea have

found in an attacking area. Great opportunity to cross, overhit it.

Easy cross, roll it into his path, he doesn't have to break his stride.

It looks like a Chelsea bench in shock at the moment. John Terry

can't take his eyes off it. They are not used to being behind in games.

They are not used to being dominated and at the moment they are.

Arsenal arms in the air, but the flight has stayed down. -- flag.

Mertesacker's long legs to Arsenal's rescue. Great tackle.

Chelsea, back in their own half after the first real spell of

pressure we have seen from them. It's hard, when you are being

pressed. Just like that, Danny Welbeck. He is great, Danny Welbeck,

really is. Just looking at Ozil on Sanchez,

coming in off those Lions, into the pockets. The movement is fantastic.

-- coming in off those lines. Arsenal free kick? Yeah, but it

doesn't matter they have given a free kick. It is tempo, tenacity,

closing down. It's trying to get your team back into the game. I

think Pedro has been the only one that has been really at it from the

start. He was a Spanish cup winner three times with Barcelona. He won a

lot with them. Scored here in the Champions League final against

United. Certainly did, six years ago tomorrow. The opening goal of the

2011 Champions League final. They are deep, Chelsea. Just calling

for calm from his wide man. Running the show out there, the number

seven. Here saying, we are winning, if they want to drop off, let them

play. It is up to them to get it off you. What he is saying his, relax,

keep it like this. But not like that.

Mertesacker is often the rated for his lack of pace, but he was quick

enough there. Also a semifinal goal-scorer, also

an unlikely one. Some said that they rode their luck

against Manchester City. But today, 25 minutes in, there has been

nothing fortunate about their performance so far. The result, that

we can see on our screens. Mertesacker doesn't have to get up

as high as anybody else. And Welbeck was just caught by Kante. I don't

think that is a booking, but that is exactly, when you're trying to get

out, you need your striker to be strong and hold up the ball. He gets

his body between the ball and Kante. It is a free kick, not a yellow

card. People get obsessed with yellow

cards nowadays, every foul should be a yellow card. Try and win the ball

still. Sometimes it's genuine. Purely by showing eagerness,

harassing, pestering, he's managed to get Arsenal a throw-in.

Oxlade-Chamberlain relishing this opportunity. Missed the 2014 final,

injured. He played only a minute in 2015 against Aston Villa after

another injury. For a player of his talents, he's certainly not played

enough minutes. It's a big day for him. He's started well.

A good save by Ospina. Diego Costa had got the better of Rob Holding.

It was Ospina who came out to block him.

He's hurt himself. I don't think it was anything other than an attempt

to win the ball. Great ball. He makes contact there.

He's trailing that leg. He's actually deflected up that way.

Antonio Conte was getting excited about a chance. Mamma Mia. It never

quite developed. Ospina did get caught by Costa's leg as it

rebounded up towards his forehead, but it was all purely accidental.

Here's an irony, all that talk about Petr Cech or David Ospina. Eyebrows

raised when the vote went to the Colombain. Petr Cech gets ready in

case he's needed any way. He's hardly been tested. He was

quite sharp there off the line. Courtois stops him. It needed the

assistance of Cahill yet again on the goal line. He's got to square it

to Ramsey. It's a tap-in. He either doesn't see him or he

thinks he can score himself. It's an easy side foot across the goal.

Should have been someone attacking that. Look how far forward Cahill

is. Can Chelsea seize their moment?

Great positional play. Good ball in from Alonso as well.

Ozil pulled off the ball by Marcos Alonso.

Arsenal's throw. This is a really enjoyable FA Cup Final. We've had a

great half an hour. Sanchez, I'm thinking he can see Ozil. Outside of

the right foot. Doesn't see him. Welbeck nice and patient. Good

little ball, that is. Gets lucky there.

One touch, he could have done it once, but Ramsey could see him.

He tried to get across Azpilicueta in front of him. He was impeded by

the Chelsea man. Arsenal free kick, chance to put the right ball into

the box again. We talked about movement off the ball earlier.

Welbeck is one of the best of that for me. With Ozil and Sanchez

getting into clever little positions and Chelsea players not sure whether

to go in or drop off, Welbeck is always going to be willing to go

down those channels. That's why I think he got the nod.

It had to be put behind by Courtois. He had to run round it a little bit.

He didn't want to take it on his right foot, but he was calm. He got

a good shot off, make the keeper make a save. Well controlled, that

volley. He normally hits them a bit better

than that. Yeah, he had to run round it, so he didn't give himself the

time. As much as he could do with that, I think. Another corner.

Look how quickly Chelsea go. 5 v 4 this is.

Good touch on that by Monreal. Talked about Mertesacker, but Nacho

Monreal has been brilliant too. Costa is shoved unceremoniously off

it by Holding. The thing is Arsenal winning 1-0, played brilliantly for

half an hour. They've got a corner. They don't get the first ball. Then

the keeper is out to the edge of the box and it's 5 v 4. That can't

happen. Pedro's ball won't cause any

problems. No, that's poor. Actually the first ball - actually he's done

OK. Antonio Conte has missed out on the double before. He never

I was listening to him before the game, what he said makes a bit of

sense, in that, the fact they've won the league and already had a good

season, they can relax a little bit. Arsenal desperately need to win this

trophy. It can add a little bit of something to your performance. We're

seeing that. We are indeed. It's worth saying, though Chelsea

have been a bit sloppy - Arsenal get lucky. They've made Chelsea look

sloppy at times with their pressing and willingness to get after them.

Look at Welbeck again, sliding in to try and keep Arsenal on the move.

Always, always gives everything he's got. Plays the role he's given for

the team, whether it be wide or central.

There's a slip from Welbeck. Sanchez had to do it by himself. He had to,

yeah. He had no choice. He made the wrong run, Welbeck, for me. He

should have gone out to go in. Not that I know much about great runs as

a striker. But he's got to be nearer the goal. Another good move, though.

Running off the ball from Sanchez. The willingness to run behind

without the ball. Sanchez didn't help either. Losing their footing on

the slick, sweaty surface. He held on, invited Azpilicueta to

keep on pushing into him, hence the Arsenal free kick. Never for the

life of me understand why defenders do that or players in general. I do

not understand it. Why you would try and win a ball that's at the corner

flag? Ridiculous is being nice. Just leave him. There

-- him there. Sanchez put off by Pedro. He's the

man who's made the difference in rather strange circumstances, one of

the more curious opening FA Cup Final goals. Yeah, I think that

there is maybe what some of the Chelsea players were fuming about.

There. Not sure. Sanchez just on the edge of the box

and now pressing there on his own, two of them. I'd love to know what

he eats. He's put everything into it when he

perhaps didn't need to. Subtle I was the key. He went for the sizzler.

The sizzler. A good move for that man Hazard, of course, instrumental.

Just sat up as he hit it. He'll be disappointed because he's a very

good finisher, Pedro. Little bit better from Chelsea. More patient

with the build up there. Ospina is the noise from the fans behind his

goals. Chelsea had to get better, that's

for sure. Ospina will come for, that not cleanly. Mertesacker tried to

duck out of his way. I think he's saying, chill, I want a

breather, I haven't stopped running for 39 minutes. He's been absolutely

sensational. Who was at fault there, Ospina or Mertesacker? I think, I

prefer a keeper to try and come and make the odd mistake than not to

come at all. Oxlade-Chamberlain loses out to

Moses, but recovers. But not in the right way. A tackle that was

straight into foul territory. Moses was on the front foot, already

trying to win it back. In the first 20, 25 minutes, he was just standing

off a little bit. It is when Chelsea have ball that they have looked like

there has not been any crispness in their pressing.

The flag didn't go up, so it must have been an infringement for a push

and pull that was not appreciated. It could have been Diego Costa? It

could well have been. Think it was on Ramsey, at the edge of the box.

The referee deserves a mention I think he has done all right in the

first half. He dealt with the big situation as best he can, went to

talk to his assistant and got the information. That was huge, inside

five minutes. I suspect the sort of moment a referee wouldn't want in

their FA Cup final. No, no. He knows if he gets it wrong he will be

hammered. But you can only make the decision after the conversation,

based on the facts you have seen, and I think he did that. He took his

time, he went over. Chelsea will say handball was the main issue. That

could be an issue. We get the luxury of having screens

that here. He gets a split second. We are moving into the brave new

world of video assistance, and we can have further discussion about

that. We were going to put you up for it.

No, thanks. Marcos Alonso hasn't had a very

comfortable afternoon, but he has done well there.

He felt chopped down by Ozil. I thought he got the ball, good

decision. Mesut Ozil, running back and making tackles. You know Arsenal

are on top, when that is happening. That's good, good desire. Exactly

what you want. Might have got away with it. A relevant, anyway. The

fact is that he is trying. Yes, it's a foul.

There is nothing wrong with making fouls. I think fans will forgive you

a lot if they see that. I think it was the kind of the challenge. Sod's

law, I was just praising him and he got one wrong. You see more of the

pitch as you come in, and the options get easier for you.

Sometimes when you play centrally, as a ten, it becomes more difficult

and you can get more isolated. Heyman Sanchez have around, the

touch has been good. -- him and Sanchez have been roaming, the touch

has been good. Conte might be thinking of a

formation change. You might think that is weird, considering how well

they have done with it this season. A free kick for Chelsea just outside

the box. Pedro clipped, as he made his way in.

He caught him, maybe it is an accident. No, that is a foul. A push

in the back as well. Good spot, Mr Taylor. A good chance for Chelsea to

more less end the half. We have seen Alonso score from these types of

positions before. You want your keeper to keep his

position, keep the wall night Anne Begg.

That was always too high, never coming down. Chelsea have been

brought back down to earth in the first half, in the FA Cup final. It

has been a terrific performance, to a man. Crisp with their passing,

creative. On chances, they should be more than one up. Let's face facts,

Chelsea have got away with it. In the last few weeks, there has only

been champagne flying in the Chelsea dressing room at half-time. I know

it's not like it used to be, that there might have been teacups in the

old days. I'd be tempted to get Fabregas on the pitch, for sure. It

is half-time. It is Arsenal's half. There might be a tinge of regret

that they haven't added to the one goal that Alexis Sanchez scored for

them within five minutes at the start of the match. Welbeck had a

chance, Mesut Ozil had a chance, Ramsey hit the post and the ball

bounced back to him off the post. As the half wore on, Chelsea have

started to assert themselves in the game as well. What a second-half we

should have for you at Wembley. At half-time, it is 1-0.

What a belting first half. Arsenal have the lead, they got off to a

cracking start. They did everything that we didn't expect? They have

been bright, energetic. They have been much, much better than Chelsea,

sharper, quicker. They got the goal that I thought was a little bit

fortunate, which we will look at, I am sure. The only one disappointment

from an Arsenal point of view is that they are not three or four up,

because they should be. Chelsea have been partying for ten days, it looks

like they had been drinking constantly. They have not started

whatsoever, they have been terrible. The downside for Arsenal is not just

the fact they are not two or three goals ahead, the fact that Chelsea

cannot perform as poorly as that in the second half, you would have

thought? We spoke about Chelsea having to keep on doing what they

have been doing, they have done the opposite. Static, spaces in the back

three that Arsenal have been able to get into. Every ball that drops,

Arsenal are there first. They need to change the intensity and again,

they are too lethargic. Early doors. If I was going in half-time, in the

dressing room, I would be disappointed. They had a couple of

chances to put this away. You say that, but the goal itself, it does

look like handball, doesn't it? I think it came off his knee and had

his hand. His hand is in a position where you are thinking, should his

arm be there? I thought it would have been very harsh!

To be honest, it does. It is where the referee is. He's only five yards

away from that incident. The linesman obviously thought it was

offside, but he didn't say... Well, neither of them. The offside is a

great decision, copyright. But I think that speaks for itself. It

should not be offside. The referee is in a good position. I

am trying to see the bit where it hits his knee? Well, it's

nerve-racking. They have missed chances. It did, you are right! I

take it back, I apologise. You make your own luck. You make your own

luck by pressing like they did. It was a long wait for them. It was a

strange celebration, given the circumstances.

They have to continue that pressing. Chelsea will get better. We have

seen Arsenal trying to get through the lines, into cost.

You talked about the chances, let's look at some of them.

Ozil got in down the side, wonderful clearance from Gary Cahill?

Wonderful pass. I thought his touch, it took him a yard too far to get a

proper connection. Yes, there is a little bit of a tackle. A great

clearance from Gary Cahill. That was one of numerous chances that they

should have put away. Danny Welbeck, we saw him nearly got in on the end

of that. I suppose if there is one thing that is missing from the game,

it is the lack of finishing sometimes? You feel he is getting in

his way a little bit. He didn't need his feet, there. But I'm thinking,

please, do that again. He has done brilliantly there. You can see Aaron

Ramsey thinking, I just need to get something on this. It came off

deposed pretty quickly. Danny has been playing well, he has caused a

lot of problems. He hit them on the break. Great energy to get there,

from where he started, the edge of his own box, to get into that area.

It caused the Chelsea back three so many problems, is running Sanchez,

Ozil and Welbeck in particular. It was a poor touch. Just has to square

that for a tap in. When the ball comes back to him, I can't

understand why you need another touch. There. Just get it on target.

That touches only going to bring a goalkeeper or defender closer to

you, you just have to get it on target. Chelsea got into the game,

latterly, not in the way they have done so many times this season. The

first glimmer of a chance was one that fell to cost? It is because of

Arsenal, how they have defended. When they have lost it, they have

backed off and made it hard to get through them. Diego Costa, that is

his strength and resistance. He is in the right position, Ospina, and

gets out. Good save. Pedro, this is a great chance. Those are the

positions that they need to get into.

He doesn't come, Pedro gets a touch. He will not be happy with that,

you've got to keep it down. We have said that Chelsea are nowhere near

their best, very untidy at times? Slow, lethargic, too deep. Allowing

Arsenal players to have too much space. Cost is trying to urge his

team-mates forward, saying, it's far too easy. You're giving top players

the chance to get their head up, pick passes. When they do that, they

will create chances. Sloppy. They gave the ball away once, they gave

it away again. All of a sudden, Arsenal are into the back three. It

was a constant of the half. Again, take a touch. One of the back three

have to come out and put him under pressure. You can't allow them that

much time and space on the ball. If that doesn't improve on the second

half, Arsenal will go on and get more chances. They will probably

score more goals. Nowhere near good enough from Chelsea. How do you

explain a team that has played so consistently well all season, so

organised and disciplined, suddenly performing badly in the first half?

It can happen to any team. They won the two weeks ago and it's not easy

to keep that momentum. Chelsea have been very static. Arsenal have been

brilliant. You can't take anything away from them. Arsene Wenger has

got it spot on? At the moment, yes, everything is working for them.

Danny Welbeck is doing a great shift upfront. I haven't been deleting --

they haven't been too tested at the back. That has been some criticism,

you might be wondering why Chelsea players are not wearing black

armbands. We have been told that they actually have them and

completely forgot to put them on. It was an error and they will be

wearing them in the second half. There have been more than 3000 goals

scored since the first FA Cup qualifying round. We are not going

to show you all of them. Pick your favourite from this lot.

Let's get Ruud Gullit's thoughts op the first half. I know you were

listening intently to what they were saying in the studio. You agree with

what Frank was saying about the way Arsenal has approached this, clever

from Wenger in the first half. Yeah to mirror the tactics of Chelsea. It

suits them. The difference between Chelsea and Arsenal is Arsenal try

to press high so that they couldn't have an easy build up. Chelsea

didn't know what to do. In the end, they were in control. The most

important players is Sanchez and Ozil, who play between the lines.

For the first half hour, it was all Arsenal. Then Chelsea started to

push forward a little bit. Then you can see their players, Pedro and

Hazard, all of a sudden into the game. It's all about little details,

who's going to make the goal? Who's going to do it? After half an hour,

I thought maybe Arsenal would make the second. Now, after the rest that

they have, Chelsea needs to play quicker and needs to press up high.

Do you think Chelsea have relaxed a little too much after winning the

Premier League, is that part TV? I just thought that they -- Is that

part of it? They just thought OK, Arsenal need to have the prize, they

mirror their tactics. In tween these lines, Ozil and Sanchez, they played

really well. They didn't know what to do. They had to go back all the

time. They created chances. All of a sudden, Chelsea woke up. A little

bit too late. But they woke up. Now in the end, last 15 minutes, a

little bit better. Ruud is confident of a 2-1 Chelsea win. More

information on the black arm bands not worn by Chelsea in the first

half. Apparently they were picking up their kit. There was a discussion

about whether to wear the tracksuit tops, presumably because of the heat

on the pitch at Wembley, the discussion continued about the

tracksuit tops and they simply forgot to put the black arm bands

on. We have been told that will be rectified in the second half. It was

second half. You have to expect that Chelsea will improve. They've got to

get every player ten yards further up the pitch, starting with that

back three. They've got to start moving the ball a little bit quicker

also. If they don't, then expect one or two changes within ten minutes.

That man there, he scores regularly, had eloves this place. Sanchez lit

the first half up. Best player on the pitch by a mile, change of

direction, now for Chelsea it's character. They've had it their own

way a lot this season. Can Arsenal hang on? I hope so. I haven't seen

much of it in the past. If they're going to do it in a game, this is

one the to do it against a good Chelsea side. Let's rejoin Danny

Alexis Sanchez with his fifth Arsenal goal at Wembley extends his

record as the Gunners' leading scorer at this stadium. Two ahead

now of Mark Overmars and Ian Wright, with three each.

The record continues, there has never been a goalless FA Cup Final

at Wembley. Six have finished goalless after 90 minutes. Who

knows, we might go with a bit of additional time today. Yeah, we

could well do. I agree with the boys in the studio. The Chelsea side have

to improve their levels. The intensity and ball retention.

Pedro has shown plenty of energy himself in the first half. A gree

completely. -- I agree completely. The one who's got himself about,

press and made some runs. First Chelsea change when it comes will be

interesting. Often he's the way that makes way for Willian. I will be

amazed if it were him today. You were talking at halftime about

you could see Chelsea changing their formation as the half develops?

Possibly. He doesn't usually do that. But the wing-backs have been a

little bit ineffective today. You could drop Alonso in. You could get

another creative one on the pitch then, Fabregas, even Willian. Matic

is probably, as the game goes on, ineffective in terms of defence,

because they need to get back into it.

We think about Arsenal changes, their defenders know they are likely

to go the distance because there are no like-for-like replacements on the

bench. That's true. Coquelin, I've seen him at centre-half, that's not

ideal, of course. Pedro went for goal. Mertesacker

stretched out a leg. He manipulated the ball really nicely, Pedro.

Mertesacker's positional play was excellent. Got the block.

Clearance not the best. That brings a Chelsea roar from the stands.

Ospina those. Well just about. Yeah better play from Chelsea. Pedro

causing problems again. Costa doing well. Kante, I think a little

deflection as it went through. Yeah, Xhaka.

Bad ball from Ozil. He shouldn't give it him there.

Per Mertesacker is having a captain's game for Arsenal. It is a

goal kick for Arsenal. He's been absolutely outstanding. His

positional play, his timing of some of his tackles. Considering he

hasn't started - is that right? Not a single game this season?

Absolutely unbelievable performance. He enjoys the FA Cup. His last goal

came in the final two years ago against Aston Villa. It's just how

long he can last, I suppose. I don't know how hard he's been training,

but matches is what gets you fit. Be honest with me, Danny, this is the

FA Cup Final, these things happen. Did you have an inkling that we

would have one of those stories today? No. You thought he'd

struggle? I thought he might a bit, yeah. He might yet. I can't lie to

you. Try and look all clever. I never look clever! Sound clever. I

did suggest that Sanchez would have to be at his very best. He certainly

has been that. It's been a mix. Chelsea have not been at it. This

isn't the Chelsea performance we're used to seeing.

Mertesacker gets it further away. The two men we talked about, Ospina

and Mertesacker keep Chelsea out again. That was a good save. Didn't

quite get full pace behind that, Moses. Could have been a bit cuter.

Sometimes they may have to soak this up, especially in this second half.

Costa sees the whistle or hears the whistle go against him and just

manages to prevent himself from throwing the ball away. You can't

curb the words though. It might be good that Anthony Taylor, as far as

I know, isn't big on Portuguese. Six of one, half a dozen. Nothing in

that for me. He feels a bit - he's giving it me, I'm giving it him.

He's a big lad. This is the chance. I think Monreal

got a little touch on that, just took it towards the goalkeeper.

Still got to make the save, though. Certainly upped the tempo a bit,

Chelsea. As I was saying in the studio -- as

Al was saying in the studio, they have to get higher up the pitch.

Rob Holding, what an impact he's made since coming into the Arsenal

team. Nearly through to Welbeck. David

Luiz blocked it. Costa doesn't keep his feet and the

challenge from Holding. Chelsea free kick and it's going to be a card for

Rob Holding. That looked a foul. I think it was accidental.

I am wondering whether Hazard fancies the near post. Costa is

craftily trying to get some space for himself, with Holding next to

him. A corner, off the head of

Mertesacker. Better ball in, good pace, good area.

Red in there, not too much blue, but they are primed and ready to run in.

Two men overcome and that is a really good block.

Brilliant block, but a bad ball. He lifted it, just roll it. Azpilicueta

did his bit for Chelsea. Sanchez, his decision-making is so good.

Incredibly tenacious, as I've said. His goal-scoring, but his passing,

when he comes in off the left side, he always sees the runs and makes

the right choice so often. Mertesacker left it, maybe under

instruction from Holding, who heads it over his own crossbar. Working

well in partnership, the old and young. Dangerous area, not enough

men in the box. Hazard gave up on that. Was he

expecting the throw to be Chelsea's? I'm not sure. It was Arsenal's and

they have taken it. Welbeck did brilliantly and was rather crudely

taken out by Victor Moses. That will be a booking. He has done that well.

Bodies around him. Strong, powerful. Takes the pressure off, gets your

team up the pitch. I have to say, I agree with Frank in the studio,

Sanchez has been the best player on the pitch by a mile. The rest of the

Arsenal players are doing their best to catch enough their performances.

-- catch him up with their performances.

Just overdone. Easy for Courtois. Ramsey was never catch on that. I

would just be wary of making too many runs forward, if I was Ramsey.

It is Granit Xhaka now that is doing the pressing of the field. That's

fine, if you have men behind you, come out and have a little press. As

long as you get back in. The longer this goes on this pitch, you have to

conserve a little bit. Pedro's shot is wide. It is because

Ramsey was still running back, exactly what I was talking about.

The spaces are created when midfielders come out of position.

The gap between defence, midfielders, they get too big.

Someone like Pedro, trying to give him the eyes and put it in the

corner. Yellow card, N'Golo Kante has got this one.

Four names in the book, two from each team. Ramsey, too quick for

him. It's not a card, is it? He's tried to win the ball. His 11th

caution of the season. Behind, that will be a corner.

Courtois can wipe his finger all he likes, that was clearly over the

line. -- wag his finger. The Arsenal fans believing this is their day,

with an hour played. Mesut Ozil's name has got a bit of

attention today. -- his mane. I suppose you are not the man to ask

about that? Very true, neither are you. Look at this from Hector

Bellerin. A tremendous recovery run from Azpilicueta.

He had time to put it back in. A great opportunity.

Welbeck couldn't quite get in front of Cahill. Arsenal having another

attacking go after sitting back in the second half? You expected

Chelsea to come out and up the tempo. Arsenal are now getting

themselves back in. Here is a change we knew was going to come at some

point. Cesc Fabregas was always going to get a run out at Wembley.

Like-for-like, Nemanja Matic makes way. Great cheers from Chelsea

supporters, quite the opposite from the Arsenal fans that used to cheer

his name. An Arsenal player for 303 games. 80 years. -- eight years.

What you will notice when he gets on the ball is Costa's runs will

change. He knows he can find him. A cup winner with Arsenal, a dozen

years ago. Ramsey, being an attacking force in

the game again. He's good at that, timing his runs.

Bellerin keeps it in, but only to find the gloves of Courtois. You've

got to pick your moments. If you are winning in a cup final against

Chelsea, look at him, trying to get back now.

The big friendly German, Per Mertesacker, getting in the way

again. Easily beat Cahill, but he has

beaten Welbeck with the past as well.

Fabregas stole the ball, and Diego Costa trying to help it on for

Pedro. Might it be that Per Mertesacker was, after all, just the

man to deal with Diego Costa? Well, he was calm. His positional play has

been great, his delivery, his passing out has been good.

Chelsea, not getting enough joy and dominance to stick with this

formation. Willian on the bench, you must be

fuming, the contribution he has made over the last couple of seasons and

he finds himself on the sidelines. He can have an impact, beat people,

score goals, and he is still bear watching.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is there as well. Coming in is Bellerin! Superb save

from Courtois. Superb move, as well. Pace and power of that break was

brilliant from Arsenal. And Chelsea reciprocate.

Hazard is going for gold. And it ricocheted off two Arsenal bodies.

Pedro, and the shot is wide, when it finally dropped for Fabregas. This

game is opening up. This is the Chelsea chance. Clever ball from

Moses. Good header, slashed wide by Fabregas.

Tried to side foot into the far corner.

Diego Costa, and just over his head. Exactly what I was talking about. As

soon as he turned, Fabregas, he was gone. He knows the ball is going to

come. If Chelsea were to get back into this, you would think Fabregas

would have something to do with it. There is your man, Willian. Before

today, he had started every round of the FA Cup for Chelsea.

Talking about Danny Welbeck, as you were, I know Arsenal fans have

gripes and groans, the Wenger out campaign, might it have been

different if he had been fit all season? Well, I don't know if he

would have made that much of a difference, but he would certainly

have improved results in some games. You do have bad luck as a manager,

sometimes. Over a period of time, the frustration of the fans, they

have not been competitive in Europe, try to win the league, this year,

the performances have just hit a low. In the big games, as well,

against the big teams. But not today. Not today, big performance.

It is hotting up in the field and in the seats.

Moses is down. Anthony Taylor had a really good look. A yellow card to

get Victor Moses, and that means his FA Cup final is over! What a big

decision that is from the referee. Chelsea down to ten, when some of

their supporters were thinking they were about to have a penalty. He is

not arguing, is he? If he has gone down, I don't know why. Yes.

I don't know what he's doing. Desperation? Cheating? In a way, it

is a great example of why you shouldn't do it. On the odd occasion

you get caught, you could have lost the cup for your team. It is not

about Victor Moses, it is about diving in general. This has now

given Arsenal a fantastic opportunity.

11 minutes between his two yellow cards. Chelsea with 22 minutes to

rescue this, a goal down and a man down. Victor Moses becomes the fifth

player to be sent off in an FA Cup Final. Chris Smalling was sent off

on the winning team last season. Different scenario for Chelsea at

the moment. They're going to have to dig so deep now. One of those

situations, wasn't it, he was more than likely to be the next player

that Antonio Conte substituted. Yeah, maybe, him or Alonso. I

thought Willian would have been on 10, 15 minutes ago. It is Arsenal's

final to lose. Welbeck lost the ball to Marcos Alonso. That will be a

free kick for Chelsea. I think in today's football, when so

many players do get tent off, there's -- sent off, there's not

enough work done on training pitches of these scenarios of ten versus 11

for long periods so players know what they're doing. Do we press? Do

we drop off? When we're winning or losing? We used to do it a lot as a

young lad at Crewe. They give you different scenarios of right, ten

minutes to go, you've got ten, you've got 11, this is the score

line. Change the score line the next day, next week, whatever. Instead of

just letting it happen naturally. Chelsea's second red card of the

season and both of those in the FA Cup. John Terry went against

Peterborough in round three. Brave decision because there would

be a few referees who would have played on and not sent him.

Sanchez has been waiting patiently to get involved in this move.

Oh, the whistle didn't go. Anthony Taylor, I thought he was putting it

to his mouth for a moment. It's high and wide. Sanchez is going

mad there. Absolutely mad. The reason is because trying to bend one

in from 25 yards. No nothing in that. No handball that from Cahill.

He's trying to bend one in from an acute angle, 25 yards, whatever it

is. Keep the ball. You've got a man over. Chelsea look tired. Pedro has

to leave the action early. On comes Willian. I know you think this is

overdue. I do, but not for Pedro. Because he's got the legs, the

energiant fitness to -- the energy and the fitness to make a

difference. Arsenal need to be more careful with

their passing now they've got the extra man.

You can feel the confidence oozing through the Arsenal ranks now. I

think we've felt it all day. Ozil perhaps a little overconfident

against Marcos Alonso. That will be a Chelsea free kick. It was terrific

defending. A good turn from Ozil. Didn't fancy it on his right. Alonso

read it. Deflected behind for a blue corner.

In the red corner, they're getting more and more excited by the minute.

I think a lot of Arsenal supporters, with the problems they've had,

Koscielny, all the defensive problems, didn't expect too much

today. David Luiz down after a collision.

He's all right. When I say Arsenal supporters, I mean all fans

probably. If I was asked and I fancied Chelsea hugely, especially

after the problems they've had. There is the Arsenal supporter, Stan

Kroenke, the two thirds owner of the club.

A man who fully backs Arsene Wenger, much to athe -- to the annoyance of

supporters. A statement from the owner saying that shares have never

been for sale. That was after records that an offer was made. We

will soon find out for sure what will happen with their manager. A

two-year deal, perhaps a sporting director. Arsene Wenger may have won

a seventh FA Cup by then. That man, Alexis Sanchez is more important.

Whoever is going to manage this team next season or two. Because it

doesn't matter how much money you get for him, you've got to replace

him. There's not many of him B -- him about.

Willian took that one full in the face.

The champions are giving it their everything with the ten men. Arsenal

1, Chelsea 1. I think it's an error, isn't it? It's a good move. Hazard

with awareness. Good awareness, good pass. Snip it's back in to Willian.

Clever little ball. I think it's taken a deflection. It gets a bit

tight there. It's come off Mertesacker.

I still think the keeper could do better. Watch the ball change angle.

He doesn't adjust. He should save it.

It's a mistake from Ospina. Diego Costa brings Chelsea back in the FA

Cup Final of 2017. There's a kiss of the badge from the player who's

widely touted to be leaving for the riches of the Chinese super league

in the next few weeks. What a parting gift, if that's what it

proves to be. Danny Welbeck off. He has given so much for the game. He

has been magnificent. Olivier Giroud, only Harry Kane in the

Premier League this season has a better goals to minutes ratio, that

Arsenal's French centre forward. They need one from him now.

They've got the extra man. They should have the ball for the

majority of the last 13, 14 minutes and whatever goes on.

Game on again in the FA Cup Final. Giroud pulling it back - Arsenal in

front once more! Aaron Ramsey scores for the Gunners! Chelsea's reprieve

is so short lived, they barely finish the celebrations.

I talked about Ramsey making runs into the box. They were 1-0 up and

being a bit cautious. With the extra man he knows he can go. Great ball

from Sanchez. Watch this from Giroud. He takes a risk that

someone's going to be in there. Your man Kante switches off for a second.

Ramsey goes on the blind side. A good goal from Ramsey. A great

timing of a run. Very much like Mr Lampard getting in the Boxall the

time, on the end of things. Chelsea -- Getting in the box all the time,

on the end of things. Aaron Ramsey has won an FA Cup Final for Arsenal

before, in extra time three years ago. Let's get it right. It's more

than they deserve. I came here like most today thinking Chelsea would

roll them over. They've shown spirit and guts. Chelsea haven't quite been

at it. But they've still had to play well. And put the miles in, show

quality, break play up. Chelsea not down yet.

You can't sit off, you've got a man extra.

Willian was held back. Free kick Chelsea. Card out again. It's Xhaka.

Willian always Goes on his right side there. Overdo it. Show him

inside. Got every right to be tired, by the way. The energy they've put

in, the Arsenal players. If they get pegged back again, they'll only have

themselves to blame. Couldn't quite get the direction.

But he got the freedom. He did. Set plays is a great advantage when

you've got a man down. You can even it up by throwing one extra and

leaving at the back and taking a risk. You've still got to stay with

your men, if you're the team with the extra man.

It's going to take a big effort from Chelsea now, huge effort.

Francis Coquelin. He can be really pleased with his performance in a

is your time? Are you still going? I'm out of breath doing this, you

know that? I was going to say, could you finish that long?

Trying something, and it was working, up to a point. You don't

need to. Willian has been fouled. Free kick for Chelsea and they have

got on with it very quickly. Willian will realise that and get up and go.

Diego Costa barges in! Straight against the chest of Ospina. That

might have just kept the club for Arsenal. Mertesacker makes a strange

decision. Seems sensible now, but let him have it. Scared of giving a

penalty away. Good save. Percentage decision, really, as a defender.

Whacked away by Monreal. In animated fashion, urging everyone of his

team-mates to get out of the penalty area. He is another one, he has been

absolutely superb. Talk about stepping up when you need your

experienced players. Ozil checks, hits the post! That was

the chance to seal it once and for all for the Gunners. How calm was

he, there? He has done everything right. But the last bit of it, hit

the post. Waits for him, beautiful shot, gives him the eyes. A trudge

to the corner flag, every step cheered by Arsenal. Chelsea have

thrown on Batshuayi. Diego Costa has gone off.

Chelsea's throwing. It shows you why the FA Cup is, for me, still one of

the best club competitions in the world. You can never predict. I was

here watching Wigan beating Manchester City in the last minute.

Today, I couldn't see this performance coming. I was a bit like

Iain Wright, even at half-time, you were thinking, can they hang on?

They have actually just been, for the whole game, to a man, superb.

Able to put one across, but Ospina will catch it and hold it for as

long as he possibly can. No, he won't, he will fire one forward.

Azpilicueta, reserves of energy to fend off Alexis Sanchez. A couple of

Arsenal boys telling beat goalkeeper not to do that again.

It was nearly a brilliant pass, but there was no need.

Arsenal are staying tightly packed in the middle. That is a good

challenge. His compatriot Marcos Alonso makes

sure he can't go any further. Going to the fans, asking them to make

some noise. When he got close to them earlier in the season, he got

an ear full. Football is like that. Quality can come and go, sometimes

you play well, sometimes you don't. That was a great block. Azpilicueta

find another leveller. When you think about what Mertesacker has

done, it is nothing short of remarkable.

This time, Ospina will hold it. Talking about Mertesacker not

starting a game all season and putting in a performance like this,

incredible. The young man next to him, Holding, Monreal, not really

his normal position. Batshuayi, to Keely into Alexis Sanchez. Arsenal

free kick. Every of those, the seconds tick by and Arsenal move

closer to winning the FA Cup final. There is my Man of the Match. Not

the most difficult one today. He is in, and it's going to roll

wide. I have been eulogising about a lot of the Arsenal players because

they have played so well. But Sanchez has been on a different

level. He is the one that has won the FA Cup. He is the difference.

Always the difference. Absolutely vital, if they can keep the lead.

Cahill cannot keep that in. Some Chelsea fans are heading for home.

They have had a seasonal celebration. They have only lost

five Premier League games. One of those was at Arsenal, it was the

catalyst for the 13 game winning run that followed, that led them to the

title. The irony! They should stay and clap the team.

They've had a great season. Today is not their day. Not yet.

Turned it inside to Ramsey, took too long to think about it.

Arsenal are going to take off your Man of the Match, Alexis Sanchez.

Having scored the first goal, inside five minutes, and set the tone for

an Arsenal performance that has their fans absolutely delighted. He

has been one of my favourite players for a long, long time. I'm glad he's

got his plaudits and applause, I should say, a standing ovation, if

it is his last Arsenal game. I'm amazed they have taken him off. If

Chelsea did sneak one in the last minute for two, you want him on the

pitch. Mohamed Elneny is on, with

instructions to set and hold what they have.

Coquelin, to carry it into the corner and carry Arsenal home.

Bellerin showed too much of that to David Luiz. Holding launches the

ball forward, and Courtois is out there to meet it. He will have to go

early and long, and decisive. That is four minutes of injury time.

Another one, won by Monreal. What is he doing!? That was for the

cup, but it is Arsenal's FA Cup anyway. A small smile on the face of

Arsene Wenger. A sporting handshake from the manager of the champions,

Antonio Conte. Arsenal have saved one of their best performances of

the entire season until last. Against all odds. Per Mertesacker is

once again and FA Cup winning captain. Stant

after all the trials and tribulations we have seen and heard

about Arsenal Football Club all season long, when it really mattered

at the very end, the Gunners have something left in their armoury. For

Arsene Wenger, it is an outright record. His seventh FA Cup triumph

as a manager. It beats the record of George Ramsey, the Aston Villa

manager, which has stood for so long. Now it is Arsene Wenger's.

stages it was apparent it could be Arsenal's day? It was a pleasure to

be here and witness a huge shock, in many ways. I know we have mentioned

a lot of individuals. But the team performance today, which we have not

said too often about this Arsenal team, a really good team

performance. Everybody working for each other for 90 minutes. No

Chelsea Dobell, just Arsenal delight. 2-1. -- double.

Arsenal are hardly a minnow, but it seemed that way today. So many

people expected Chelsea to go and complete the double. Arsenal have

won the FA Cup for a record-breaking 13th time.

No 44 Chelsea. Still no major win in a final as a manager for Antonio

Conte. What a stunning final it was. A fantastic game. Arsenal thoroughly

deserved to win. They were a yard quicker, a yard sharper than every

single Chelsea player through the game. I know Danny gave Sanchez Man

of the Match, that man I just saw there, Mertesacker, has not played a

game, 90 minutes, all season. He played today and was absolutely

magnificent. Iain, you are chuffed, Arsenal triumphed against the odds.

He has been very brave, Ospina, Mertesacker, he has come in and

answer the critics. The way they played, I know people say Chelsea

did not play as well as they could, but nobody before this game fancied

Arsenal. I didn't fancy them. I thought it was more heart than head,

like you said. But they've done it. I rarely have seen Arsene Wenger so

enthused. But you can see why? Yes, it is a huge thing. It will be

interesting to see what he does now. He looks like a young kid, which is

good to see. He has been under such pressure. We can hear from the

matchwinner, the second time he has scored a winner in our FA Cup final.

The matchwinner, you have done it again. Before the game, everybody

was saying Chelsea were the favourites. But you have won it,

your manager has won the seventh FA Cup, you've got the winner again? I

can't describe it. It's been an up-and-down season. To finish with

an FA Cup, it has to be a successful season to win silverware. To get the

winner again, I don't know, I love this competition. I love playing

here. I am delighted. The boys deserve it and I am happy for the

manager, for him to get another FA Cup. We are delighted.

An early goal, ten men in the second half for Chelsea. They make it

1-16789 Olivier Giroud got the ball to your left side here. What did you

think, get the ball in the middle and I'll be there? Of course, that's

my game. I love to make late runs in the box. I think he knew I would be

there and put it on a plate for me to score the winner. You mention

nice words there about your manager, Arsene Wenger. Do you want him to

stay, do you think he'll stay at the club? Of course, I do. He's been

fantastic for me. Fantastic for these players. He deserves this.

You've seen that, we changed the formation and we've had a lot of

success with it. Fair play to him. He's changed the system and it's

paid off. Hopefully he'll be here next season. Because we owe him a

Congratulations, your manager said I were a big -- you were a big match

player. What about the performance of the team today? A great

performance. We stuck in there, obviously, when they equalised and

it looked like things were a bit against us, but we dug deep and

Rambo got that goal and he's won us the final. Were you worried at 1-1,

be honest? You always worry in football. You never know what can

happen next. Obviously it's a game full of surprises. We dug deep. We

got the FA Cup once more. Aaron had lovely words for the manager wanting

him to stay, thinking he can build again. Is that echoed throughout the

team? Yeah, definitely. Obviously it's not for us to make the

decision. He makes the decisions as well as the people higher up in the

club. I can't really comment on that. Go and celebrate with the

fans. Congratulations. There is Arsene Wenger. I suppose it

begs the question again, we've been asking it for weeks and weeks, I

guess we find out on Monday. Does it make it an easy decision to stay or

to go? It's a good time to leave, isn't it, with winning, but it

probably motivates him to do better next season. Maybe so, I think them

not being in the top four will be something that he'll be very

disappointed about. Like people are saying at the start glosses over, it

a win is a win against a Chelsea side who were brilliant this season.

They didn't play their best today. Arsenal took full advantage and

played as well as they had to play to beat the Chelsea side. There it

is, most FA Cup wins for a man in charge of the club. Things have

changed over the years. He has taken over from George Ramsey at the top

of the leaderboard. A word on Chelsea, not at their best, one of

those days? One of those days. A game too far. They've been the

dominant team in the Premier League this year. Can you look at the two

weeks that they've had since they've won the title, have they took their

foot off the pedal. I don't think. So if you turn up at the final not

at it completely and not on your game, at this level, you're going to

struggle to win games. We've all played in games where there's a

lethargic feel to the performance. It's hard to shake off. It was 29

minutes before the first effort for them on target. Arsenal started the

game with real intent. Chelsea were too slow. They couldn't pick it up.

Arsenal deserve all the credit because they've been under huge

pressure. The manager's under huge pressure. They've put in one hell of

a performance for their football club today. Andy Taylor going up.

Obviously a key decision in the red card, which was right. None of us

want to see diving in football. Excellent decision there. Maybe the

first goal, handball we thought possibly. But overall he had a

decent afternoon. Brilliant I thought. Really controlled the game

well. It was a pivotal moment. When the referee blew the whistle, I

thought he'd given the penalty. He done well. He spotted that

brilliantly. It was the perfect decision to make. It was a great

decision because diving has been a huge subject in our game over the

last few months. For him to make that call in a game of this size and

get it absolutely right, it was the correct decision because it was

cheating. It was a brave decision. Yeah, he tried to cheat. He tried to

cona penalty for his team. The referee got it absolutely right. We

can hear with the man of the moment, Dan walker has got Arsene Wenger.

We are going to make our way off the pitch. Arsene, thank you for letting

us grab you for a few words. Talk us through the game from your

perspective. You said it wasn't about your winning seven FA Cups,

you said it was about the team. What about the team performance? We had

an outstanding performance from the first minute onwards. This team has

suffered and united and responded. I said last week which team would win

the Championship with one or two goodbyes and keep them together. I

think we are in a good way. They showed strength, unity and we played

spectacular football today again. Did you feel it was a gamble, we

talked about you had only played your fit defenders. Were you

worried? Of course. Per Mertesacker has not played one game. You trust

their intelligence and experience. The player has over 100 caps for

Germany. He did very well today. What does it mean to you,

individually now to be the only manager who's won seven of these

things? I'm very proud because you see what kind of time you have when

you want to win one, you have to go through the rounds. If nobody has

done it before, you know, I'm proud for having done two things what have

not been done is one the Championship without losing a game

and win seven FA Cups. It's not easy, believe me. Very quickly, two

more questions: What now for you? Everybody wants to know, will you be

at this club next season? I have always been very clear on that. We

have a vote meeting on Tuesday and I think, Wednesday, Thursday, it will

all be clear. Do you want to be here next season? I have always been

can't even read him! You look at him what he's saying, you can't read

what Arsene Wenger is going to do. You can certainly read that he's

hugely chuffed with that victory. So he should be. He's put a lot of

faith in his team. They have let him down over the years. In certain

games they show what they are capable of. This was another one of

those games. He deserves a lot of credit for turning that team out

today and that team giving him that performance. He had suspensions,

injuries. He went in with three at the back against a team that have

played three at the back very, very well for the vast majority of the

season. And they thoroughly deserve the trophy today. He still divides

opinion amongst Arsenal fans. Well, this will just paper over the

cracks? I think the imperfectessive thing about the team performance

today was off the ball. We know they've got quality on the ball. Off

the ball, they way they pressed. It looked organisationed. The question

is - can they reproduce that week in, week out next season. This group

of players, whether or not under Arsene Wenger. They need to produce

it regularly. Arsene Wenger is going up the steps. It's that moment to

receive the trophy. His team will be behind him. Let's rejoin Guy mobery.

future holds for the Arsenal manager. He's certainly made his

out from that interview, when he said one or two goodbyes he meant

good purchases, not goodbyes, not yet any way.

time, a man who has Masterminded cup success for his club. Every one of

the players, who are about to receive their medals and get the

chance to lift the cup high in the air, have played a quite brilliant

the other side. Surely, he will be the name that is spoken most by

with a knee injury. 37 minutes against Everton last Sunday, enough

to get him back in the groove to lead Arsenal to this. One of the

nicest men in the game. Nobody would begrudge him it. Per Mertesacker is

an FA Cup winning captain again for Arsenal. His is the FA Cup story of

the day, in many ways. His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge will

pass the cup to Laurent Koscielny, the regular captain and Per

Mertesacker, the oldest cup competition in the world, no team

has won it more than Arsenal! For a record 13th time. Arsenal, FA Cup

Club once again, FA Cup winners for a record 13th time. Overall they

deserved it, Alan. Absolutely. I don't think anyone can argue with

that. They were much the better team. They should have scored three

or four goals in the first half. They should have scored another two

or three in the second half, particularly when Chelsea had the,

were down to ten men in the end, the chances they had. They showed great

character coming back when Chelsea got their goal. Absolutely they

thoroughly deserve. It -- deserve it. Frank, a word on Chelsea,

overall, a fabulous season, one game's not going to completely spoil

that, but FA Cups are awful to lose. It won't feel like a fabulous season

tonight. In reflection it will be. They need to go away and appreciate

the season they've had, from where they were at the start of the

season, they would have taken the start of the season without a doubt.

When you get this close to the double, it leaves a slightly bad

taste now. They should take a lot from this year and build for next

year. Ian has broken a record this evening, 15 minutes now with a smile

on his face. LAUGHTER

I'm proud of them. I am. You wouldn't have found too many Arsenal

fans last night, when you consider who was missing, through suspension

and injury, who would have said Arsenal would have won today? No-one

was expecting Chelsea to be as poor as they were. You have to take

advantage of that. It all started with a terrific beginning from

Arsenal and a Sanchez goal, with obviously, a bit controversial,

handball we felt. Yeah, we all felt it was handball. The referee had a

very good view of it. The linesman flagged for offside. Of course, that

wasn't correct. But that is handball. The ref has a good view. A

very good finish from sarchl sank. -- Sanchez. Two hands by the looks

of it. They started very well. In a final, when you start and get your

nose in front at that point, it really changes the dynamics of the

game. It gives them confidence. They carried on playing the way they

started. Chelsea with Hazard, he's been brilliant all season. He didn't

play today. When the day is going against you, you need someone to get

you going. He didn't do that today. Sanchez Sergeant is a fantastic

player. Chelsea came out better in the second half. Once they were down

to ten men. That was his first yellow, Victor Moses then a blatant

dive. Only himself to blame. We don't want to see that kind of

rubbish. He doesn't seen make an attempt for the ball,

Oxlade-Chamberlain. It's cheating. He's expecting something. In the end

he's gone down with nothing. The referee deserves huge credit for

that. He got it spot on. That will carry a ban for next season. I'd

have thought. So -- thought so. Then against the odds really, wasn't it,

that back came Chelsea. Diego Costa managed to get on the act. You

wouldn't have expected this, Chelsea down to ten men. You always knew

they had a threat. The threat came. Willian comes on, sub, a decent ball

in the area. Costa does well, shows strength and balance. His hits it,

keeper has to save it. -- mis-hits it. He should be palming that wide.

He made one or two decent saves in the game. He had a couple that went

straight at him and you ride your luck. That one I was petrified. I

think we timed it something like 22 seconds from kickoff Ian and it was,

they were back in front. When Giroud came on, I was thinking oh, he's

taken off Danny. I was thinking, oh, my gosh. Then, he's come on and made

a brilliant run here. He's stretching them. Great run here.

That ball there, not sure we're going to see Danny Welbeck do that.

Arsene Wenger he's done it again, pulled something out. Loved the one

from Ramsey here. When you get the other side, Kante switches off and

it's too late to get back in. Ramsey does what he can do. I remember your

celebration was "Oh, my gosh!" What I like about Ramsey, he gets a lot

of stick, but he never hides. Always shows up for the ball, always plays

the way he believes he should. Delighted for him. Seven times.

Arsene Wenger. That's some achievement. Unbelievable. There he

is with Ruud Gullit. He won the cup, of course, as a manager as well for

Chelsea. Way back when, having a good conversation. I wonder if Ruud

Gullit knows what he's going to say! Everyone's been asking that question

for a long time now. These celebrations will go on and on. Just

looking at this there, Sanchez is just as important, a different

question, but he's very important. He will set a marker down. If he

stays and commits to the club, they might be able to bring other players

round him. If he leaves, how do you replace that? Absolutely. They'll

continue on the pitch. They're having their conversation. We've got

to bring you the result of the goal of the FA Cup tournament. I think

one goal from each round was selected. Matic led the vote and it

seems that the guys in the studio agree. It's hard not to. A

sensational goal in the semifinal against Tottenham. Brilliant strike.

Super strike. Keeper's got no chance. Brilliant goal. There were

some good goals. You liked one of them particularly. I think his name

was Julian something, really rotund little fella, really great strike.

You're thrilled Ian? I am. It's been a tough season. A very tough season.

I think it's going to be a tough summer. But that gives the fans

something to smile about. Does it make up for the season? I don't

think it will, but I feel that just like Chelsea have won the league and

they'll be on a downer now. Arsenal have won the cup, after a poor

season by their standards. Winning the league is ultimately what the

team sets out to do at the start of the season. That's what it's all

about. That's what Chelsea have to get back into their heads. Very

positive season for them generally. They've been fantastic all year.

They didn't play well today. They have to take what they've done this

season and take it forward. What it was was a cracking final. A

brilliant game. Really enjoyed it, end to end from start to finish. The

best team won it. Definitely. No-one can argue with that. That team

was... Arsenal, al! You deserve the final line. Ian, thank you very
