weekend kicks off with one of the

great fixtures in English football.

Liverpool versus Everton. That is

the view across Stanley park. A few

hundred yards separates the clubs.

We are at Anfield for the latest

chapter in this 124 year rivalry.

These clubs have lifted the FA Cup

on 12 occasions. Liverpool most

recently in 2006, and it was in 1995

when Everton last won at Wembley.

Liverpool have never beaten the

neighbours in an FA Cup tie at

Anfield, meeting four times

previously with every game ending in

a drawer, therefore Everton have not

won one either. Alan Shearer joins

us alongside two men who have tasted

cup success, Danny Murphy with

Liverpool and Peter Reid with

Everton. We can take a

The obvious talking point

for Liverpool is Virgil van Dijk, a

new signing, jump straight into the

team. What will he give to Liverpool

that they were missing?

He is a big

presence, a good footballer. People

have questioned his leadership

qualities. I have watched him and I

knows someone who knows him well and

they are not worried about that

aspect of his game. He was desperate

to play tonight. Jurgen Klopp had a

chat and he was all for playing. He

is not 100% in terms of minutes in

games where he wants to be but he

was desperate to play, which is

credit to him. I am looking forward

to see if he gets on two free kicks

tonight.

£75 million is a lot of

money for a defender and sends a

message about where Liverpool are.

I

think it does. When you look at the

priorities of Liverpool and all the

big boys in the FA Cup, this is

probably four out of five, with the

Premier League, the Champions

League, top four qualification and

this and the League Cup. This is why

it is important for Liverpool. For

Liverpool to have a good go in this

competition, good they have named a

strong squad. When you look at the

success Arsenal have had this

competition it is right to say if

Arsenal had not won the FA Cup,

Arsene Wenger might not be in a job

so that is how important it is for

Liverpool.

Manchester City have

probably won the league already,

these are special games, whatever

the competition.

It is a long time

since Everton have got a result

here. An FA Cup trophy. I love the

FA Cup. The first major trophy I won

and still the best, even though I

won titles. Everton, a massive game

tonight. I know Sam will keep it

tight. I hope we get on the front

foot when we get the ball. You know

what I mean.

You go way back with

big Sam and I am talking way back,

you played together for Bolton.

Is

Progress has stalled over Christmas

with no wins in four and questions

remain as to whether Big Sam's brand

of football can win over. Happy New

There is no doubt about that.

The problem has been coping with the

Christmas period. This is the fifth

game in 14 days. We have been

rotating the side. We had to cope

with injuries. And of course, that

has not brought many good results

over Christmas so hopefully today

the strongest side we have got plays

tonight and we have to try to win,

at some stage, whether it is in the

early part of the game, middle or

end, but stay in the game as long as

you can and try to score first. We

saw less to do that here. We have to

do our best to win on the night. I

do not think either of us would like

a replay with the amount of games we

have played this season.

Given the

fact these clubs have been involved

in classic FA Cup encounters, does

it mean we are in for a cracker?

You

will have to wait and see, we will

try our best. We will not be playing

open and expansive football and let

Liverpool play through us, which is

what they are capable of. We have to

keep a tight game early and when we

have possession, be very good in

possession tonight, use the ball in

the right areas and expose

weaknesses Liverpool have.

What they will not be doing is

playing open, expansive football! Is

it a good thing with Everton?

They

like attacking football.

He has had bad press. Remember at

Bolton, attacking players. It is a

struggle at the moment. It depends

what you have got. Liverpool have

pace and so it is not use playing a

high line. What I would say on the

other side, if you win matches,

score goals and Everton have not had

many chances recently. Besides

keeping it tight, have the threat.

They have had fewer shots than

anybody else but one player who has

delivered is Wayne Rooney.

It does

not matter how old you are, playing

in the middle of the park, number

10, four, you have to take a risk

and he is the best acid in the team.

Ideally, they need two of him -- and

he is the best at it in the team. He

has done terrific team well to get

the goals, playing the way they

have, and deserves great credit

because he has had ups and downs off

the field. He is a terrific

footballer, he is their leader. And

the fact he was not playing a little

bit of time earlier was ridiculous.

He will be crucial. It looks like

Everton is on the verge of signing

Cenk Tosun. He plays in Turkey. Bert

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, the

youngster, has a lot of ability but

is not adding the goals.

That will

come and what we have said, after

the success of so many England youth

teams, of which he was a huge part,

the under 20s winning the

tournament, they need chances and

this guy has had chances, 33

appearances, seven goals and been

involved in almost all of their

games. The first game this season,

setting up for Wayne Rooney. A

difficult position to learn at that

age when it is such a big club are

relying on you. Great pace running

in behind. He has someone who can

feed

in behind. He has someone who can

feed him in. Look at the first

movement, against Liverpool. A great

ball and without doubt a penalty. A

stupid foul to give away but he got

into that position. He did great to

get there. Brilliant to win the

ball. Chasing a lost cause but now

he has to pick up his head and play

someone in. That will come to him,

as will the goals. It is too much to

rely on him which is why Sam has

spent big money but he will get

better and learn

That is true. Plus it is a cup game

which makes it more special. Not a

lot of good things to do in January,

because of the weather but playing

under the floodlights at Anfield

against Everton is one of the best

things. We are excited about the

opportunity, it is cool. Everything

is there, two teams from one

wonderful city.

You have arrested

first-team players, in years gone

by, is this a sign you want to lift

the FA Cup trophy this year?

I

cannot remember we rested anybody.

We always made our mind up to win

the game and we had a busy schedule,

twice in the semifinal after the

Carabao Cup and we had to think

about who to use when. Of course,

nobody ever was rested. We picked

the players when they were able to

play.

You must be delighted to see

Virgil van Dijk wearing the red of

Liverpool tonight. No pressure

against a Merseyside rival!

Klavan

has played a lot. I thought about

it. There were issues. So Virgil is

fresh. Not 100% fine tuned that big

experience so there is no pressure.

It is a big opportunity and a joy to

play the first time in a wonderful

red shirt. He is looking forward to

it and of course we do. He should

not be that decisive tonight, he

only has to do the job.

Basic errors which at this level you

It started early on in the season.

Set pieces, nowhere near good

enough. This was the first game of

the season against Watford. Not one

coming into attack the ball. Zonal

marking. All over the place. A

problem for Liverpool. They have

shown up with Virgil van Dijk and

hopefully he will improve them and

if they get a new keeper, I do not

think they will be that far away.

Do

you like his football?

The way they

play? No! Of course! Allen is on

about the keepers. I like teams who

manage games. And having that

steeliness. In terms of expansive,

attacking play. Brilliant. It will

be so hard for Everton but the

steeliness to see you through the

game, it is one of them.

No Philippe

Coutinho. He is injured. Another

Brazilian has been impressive.

Roberto Firmino. He is appreciated

but not as much as he should be. He

has generally played up front. What

he does well is set the tone. He is

good in the air. His hold-up play is

good and he is adding goals. When he

first turned up at Anfield, he

looked heavy and there was doubt

about his pathetic ability but his

skill and desire... I think they are

better when he plays and his fitness

levels have got better. He gives

them a presence, which is probably

why there has not been an urgency to

get a striker and why Daniel

Sturridge is finding himself nowhere

near the team.

It must be brilliant

to play in a team,

chances. They are difficult to pick

up. With the number of players they

have, left, right, down the middle,

warm up and you are impressed with

the way Jordan Pickford moves the

ball around.

McCarthy swung it forward full study

did not reach Calvert-Lewin. There

seemed to be an apology for van

the right decision from the referee.

much more with it.

A big feature for

Liverpool. Counterattacking from

streaming forward. It did not come

to anything. He must be careful with

that.

going to try another run at

Robertson. He gets in the way of

double can progress with Milner and

obsessed with going for the line.

Van Dyke. Early days of course but

he looks well settled in. -- van

Dijk. As a central defender, now

quickly do you get used to new

players in quickly. I think he does

have star qualities. No doubt.

Minimise your mistakes, come here

and make your mark whenever you go

to a club. That is what you have to

do. Win trophies.

Everton only had 21% of the ball and

the game and did not do much

attacking. They are sticking to the

word of the manager and are having a

to do that as well tonight. Everton

are quite happy to sit back, sit

fairly deep.

necessary curl. Not the best effort

from Saadi Mane. We have seen

Mohamed Salah: min from that range.

I do not think he was cramped in

economy. Something tells me he had a

nice seat. Probably had a better

night's sleep than we did will stop

sure it is the right preparation for

a game of this size. Maybe it is

good for his confidence.

Just another late challenge. James

Milner was quick to come in and make

a point to his fellow Yorkshireman,

the referee.

A big weekend for his family. The

referee's Oldham brother will be on

duty for Bournemouth against Wigan

tomorrow. He'd just around too far

in front of Oxlade-Chamberlain and

just did enough to put the brakes on

before crashing into the Everton

fans.

Liverpool managed to bounce

the ball out. Can get on it. Needed

to make more of that. A slow start

for Oxlade-Chamberlain. Not for this

man. 23 goals already in all

competitions. I would be happy to

see him sitting there if I were an

Evertonians.

A slight groin injury

has caused him to be sitting out.

What a season he is having! Newly

Sigurdsson managed to get away from

Gomez, first time anyway. Awkward

for Matip that he adjusted well

enough. -- but he adjusted.

Calvert-Lewin will keep on chasing.

That was adjudged to have been by

Calvert-Lewin on van Dijk.

Just a

little bit too much on this from

Holgate. The quality must improve he

has time and space. Just needs to

find a better ball for

Calvert-Lewin.

That header by Holgate was not

certain. On two Lallana.

makes no mistake with that one. That

throwing was interesting how

Liverpool Flood and area. Firmino,

Mane and Lallana all coming over to

that area of the pitch. Possession

is closer than it was in the

December Derby. The ball is being

bossed by Liverpool.

I think Sam

Allardyce will be quite happy at the

moment. A bit of a blip recently.

There have just been the first few

mumblings about Everton tactics over

the last few games. You cannot argue

with the way he has reorganised

Everton and got them into being what

they needed. Now for the next stage.

I did like his words this week about

this game when he said it is a glory

game and you go out and seek the

glory for the latter is the FA Cup.

I suppose the platform is to be

disciplined. -- seek the glory and

the glory is the FA Cup.

Maybe Wayne

Rooney is the man to provide that,

though not with a ball like that.

Managed to thread it through to

It is Everton's turn to knock it

around with confidence.

They are

proving they can pass the ball.

They'd just need to go forward.

is why you need Calvert-Lewin to

have seen a lot of that this year.

It is not quite clicking, is it, for

likely to be van Dijk's. Not quite

clicking for Jurgen Klopp and not

quite getting going as a cup tie

yet.

The workload now for the

Premier League players is quite

phenomenal. Only last night did we

put the Premier League game down and

we're into a new competition. We are

tired watching.

Mind you, you want to win a trophy,

that is the thing. When you hang up

your boots, you want to have

something to show for it.

if someone is not being booked.

fourth official may have spotted

something the referee did not. He is

alerted to it now.

It is a long conversation. Holgate

suggestion that he spat. I do not

think so. I find that astonishing.

continue, as we were, although with

more edge than we had before. Maybe

the keeper. He made it so easy for

The other talking point out the

latter stages was Holgate on

Firmino. We are not sure what has

gone on because something clearly I

spat at him but it is clear he does
