It's one of New York's most iconic neighbourhoods,

0:00:060:00:08

but its future is in serious doubt.

0:00:080:00:10

On this week's programme, we'll find out why.

0:00:120:00:15

The challenges facing Chinatown - how rising rents

0:00:390:00:43

and relentless development are threatening

0:00:430:00:45

the culture of this Manhattan neighbourhood.

0:00:450:00:48

We drive through the wine tunnels of Moldova.

0:00:480:00:51

In Global Guru this week, where is the ideal South American vacation?

0:00:520:00:57

MUSIC SCREECHES TO A STOP, NEW RECORD BEGINS

0:00:590:01:01

And I'll be learning to be a DJ in the world's first

0:01:010:01:04

underwater nightclub.

0:01:040:01:06

MUSIC: "The Sidewalks Of New York" by Duke Ellington

0:01:120:01:17

Located on the southern tip of Manhattan,

0:01:350:01:37

Chinatown is one of New York's best-known neighbourhoods.

0:01:370:01:41

Hundreds of thousands of migrants have flocked here for centuries,

0:01:460:01:50

hoping to build a new life for themselves.

0:01:500:01:52

This part of New York has been influenced by Chinese culture

0:01:550:01:58

for many years, but things are changing.

0:01:580:02:00

A recent report has thrown up a real concern over the future

0:02:020:02:05

of Chinatown in New York, showing a population decrease of 7% since 1990.

0:02:050:02:11

Much of the blame falls on the recent relaxation of zoning rules -

0:02:140:02:18

rising rent and luxury developments are changing the culture

0:02:180:02:21

of the area, with many Chinese migrants simply priced out.

0:02:210:02:26

And there are also big declines in traditional businesses and tourism.

0:02:260:02:30

I met up with Wellington Chen, the executive director

0:02:300:02:33

of New York's Chinatown Partnership, to find out why.

0:02:330:02:37

So, Wellington, what has happened to Chinatown in New York?

0:02:370:02:41

Chinatown is going through a transitional cycle,

0:02:410:02:43

like many other groups that have preceded us.

0:02:430:02:47

We are trying to adjust to the best we can.

0:02:470:02:50

And do you see less tourists coming, or the business losing...?

0:02:510:02:54

Yes, after the tragedies of September 11th,

0:02:540:02:58

this was part of the frozen zone and it basically pushes...

0:02:580:03:02

It pushed the garment industry over a cliff.

0:03:020:03:05

It was already teetering, you know.

0:03:050:03:07

The garment industry was not competitive in terms

0:03:070:03:09

of the worldwide market

0:03:090:03:11

and so that dispersed a lot of our workers

0:03:110:03:17

to the other boroughs.

0:03:170:03:19

A number of businesses in Chinatown point to the tragedies of 9/11

0:03:230:03:27

as a turning point for the area, with some companies never recovering.

0:03:270:03:32

THEY SPEAK IN CHINESE

0:03:320:03:35

Wilson Tang's family have run the Nom Wah Tea Parlor for over 60 years -

0:03:350:03:39

their proximity to the World Trade Center saw a big decline in business.

0:03:390:03:44

But he's been working hard over the past few years to make

0:03:440:03:47

the restaurant relevant for modern Chinatown.

0:03:470:03:50

When I took over three years ago, it was kind of

0:03:500:03:54

rebuilding the brand and starting from scratch again.

0:03:540:03:57

What have you done to keep this place up,

0:03:570:04:01

keep it up with the times?

0:04:010:04:02

Well, that's a really good question.

0:04:020:04:05

So, three years ago, the one thing I knew was social media

0:04:050:04:11

and you know, everyone had a Facebook page.

0:04:110:04:16

That's really what got the word out.

0:04:160:04:19

If I had to think back on, like, "How did this come about?" -

0:04:190:04:22

it was through Facebook.

0:04:220:04:24

So if you hadn't have been on Facebook

0:04:240:04:25

and through social media, that wouldn't have happened?

0:04:250:04:28

Yes, it would have been like a different game.

0:04:280:04:32

Wilson's restaurant is a great success story for Chinatown,

0:04:320:04:35

but, for many, staying in Manhattan is financially not an option.

0:04:350:04:39

So where are Chinese residents and businesses now?

0:04:410:04:44

And what about new arrivals?

0:04:440:04:46

Well, according to the latest American Census,

0:04:540:04:56

Flushing in Queens has seen a 93% increase in Chinese

0:04:560:05:01

residents during the ten years to 2010,

0:05:010:05:03

whilst Manhattan's Chinatown population was decreasing.

0:05:030:05:08

Packed full of traditional restaurants and small businesses,

0:05:080:05:11

to many, this is now the beating heart

0:05:110:05:14

of the Chinese community in New York.

0:05:140:05:16

So far, though, very few tourists head here.

0:05:160:05:20

But could the promise of authentic food and traditional goods be

0:05:200:05:23

enough to tempt tourists to leave Manhattan and head into Queens?

0:05:230:05:28

If I would have more time - I have just four days in New York -

0:05:280:05:31

of course I would visit Queens and also the Bronx,

0:05:310:05:33

but time is too short.

0:05:330:05:36

Where is Queens? I don't know.

0:05:360:05:38

We only stay at Manhattan, so we go to Chinatown,

0:05:380:05:43

-Central Park, voila, all the tourist things.

-Yes, I would.

0:05:430:05:47

But I've never heard about Chinatown in Queens, so...

0:05:470:05:51

but I would be interested.

0:05:510:05:52

Whilst the challenges remain great,

0:05:550:05:57

Wellington insists that residents and businesses alike will work together

0:05:570:06:01

and fight to keep this little part of China in Manhattan alive.

0:06:010:06:06

What's the future of Chinatown?

0:06:060:06:08

I have no doubt, I am an optimist,

0:06:080:06:10

I have no doubt that Chinatown will be here...for a long, long time.

0:06:100:06:15

The question is, really, the degree and success -

0:06:150:06:19

the vibrancy of it.

0:06:190:06:21

And that's something that we are taking very seriously.

0:06:210:06:25

Ade Adepitan in New York's Chinatown.

0:06:340:06:37

And if you're thinking of heading there soon,

0:06:370:06:39

here's a few things you might want to know before you book your trip.

0:06:390:06:43

MUSIC: "Can I Kick It?" by A Tribe Called Quest

0:06:440:06:46

Take a trip to One World Trade Center,

0:06:480:06:51

due to open later this year -

0:06:510:06:53

New York's tallest building will offer unrivalled views

0:06:530:06:56

and serve as a monument to 9/11 for tourists and residents.

0:06:560:07:01

For great sunrise and sunset views, head to Hoboken, New Jersey,

0:07:030:07:07

where you can see a great sweep of Manhattan.

0:07:070:07:09

You ever been in an old-timer gang fight?

0:07:110:07:14

If money is tight, many comedy clubs put on free nights

0:07:140:07:17

when you can see up-and-coming performers.

0:07:170:07:19

Pack your running shoes - on the weekend,

0:07:210:07:24

the Central Park drives are closed to traffic

0:07:240:07:27

and become huge open-air running, biking and skating tracks.

0:07:270:07:30

Let's start this week's travel update with...

0:07:370:07:42

In Moldova, everybody makes wine.

0:09:000:09:02

Ciotca has been making wine since she was 13,

0:09:020:09:06

just like Moldovans have done for more than 4,000 years.

0:09:060:09:09

They've only recently started making GREAT wine.

0:09:090:09:11

I hope and I think we are getting better.

0:09:110:09:14

For decades, the USSR treated Moldova as its personal vineyard,

0:09:240:09:27

at one point, making this tiny nation the seventh-largest

0:09:270:09:30

wine producer on Earth.

0:09:300:09:32

Since Soviet rule,

0:09:320:09:33

state-run Milestii Mici winery sells the world's largest wine collection,

0:09:330:09:37

about 65,000,000 litres in a 200km limestone cave system.

0:09:370:09:42

That you can DRIVE through!

0:09:430:09:45

If you look just in front of us, you see

0:09:470:09:50

-that's a walled door on wheels. This may close and open.

-Awesome!

0:09:500:09:54

Of course everything was hidden

0:09:540:09:56

and no-one could realise that something behind the wall.

0:09:560:09:59

'Milestii Mici has a number of hidden treasures.

0:09:590:10:02

'Like this secret door - a throwback to Soviet prohibition

0:10:020:10:05

'from 1985 to 1987, when the government physically

0:10:050:10:09

'destroyed Moldovan vineyards and crippled its wine industry.'

0:10:090:10:12

-This was to hide wine from the government, right?

-Yes.

0:10:120:10:15

-But isn't this government-owned?

-Yes!

0:10:150:10:17

So the government was hiding wine from the government?

0:10:170:10:20

This is the story, just a legend, of course!

0:10:200:10:23

About 35km south, state-owned winery Cricova holds

0:10:230:10:27

the world's second-largest wine collection.

0:10:270:10:29

It stretches through 120km of tunnels

0:10:290:10:32

and reaches depths of 80m underground.

0:10:320:10:34

Bottles from his collection...

0:10:420:10:44

Can you drink a bottle of Goering's wine?

0:10:440:10:46

-No!

-I would get some sort of sick pleasure from that!

0:10:460:10:49

'Despite its wide collection,

0:10:490:10:51

'including private stores for Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor

0:10:510:10:55

'Angela Merkel, Cricova is most famous for its sparkling wine.'

0:10:550:10:59

After experiencing the history of Moldovan wine,

0:11:090:11:12

I was curious to see what its future holds,

0:11:120:11:14

so I headed to the Stefan Voda region,

0:11:140:11:16

and acclaimed boutique winery, Et Cetera.

0:11:160:11:18

We have wine country, but we forgot about our wine...

0:11:180:11:22

..our local indigenous varieties.

0:11:230:11:25

Et Cetera is only the second winery to reintroduce Feteasca Neagra, a local variety

0:11:250:11:30

that disappeared from the Moldovan landscape during Soviet

0:11:300:11:33

control, when quantity of wine was of much bigger concern than quality.

0:11:330:11:37

This is something I would say between Cabernet Sauvignon

0:11:370:11:41

and Merlot.

0:11:410:11:42

To be honest, I don't how it's supposed to be,

0:11:420:11:45

because I never tried the perfect Feteasca Neagra. I would love.

0:11:450:11:49

A Russian ban on Moldovan wine in 2006 forced Moldovan

0:11:510:11:55

wineries like Et Cetera to start making better wines

0:11:550:11:58

for European tastes.

0:11:580:11:59

Another wine embargo from Russia in 2013 has local vineyards

0:11:590:12:03

continuing efforts to improve their product.

0:12:030:12:06

Only those willing to make the journey to Moldova will

0:12:060:12:08

discover the secrets of the world's most unique wine destination.

0:12:080:12:11

MUSIC: "Rock DJ" by Robbie Williams

0:12:170:12:21

Still to come on the programme...

0:12:210:12:23

RECORD SCREECHES TO A STOP

0:12:230:12:25

Do you want to learn that one?

0:12:250:12:27

-How do I do THAT?

-OK, let's teach you that one!

0:12:270:12:29

I'll be testing out my DJ skills at an underwater nightclub

0:12:290:12:32

here in the Maldives...

0:12:320:12:34

And what are the real chances of seeing Northern Lights?

0:12:360:12:40

Welcome to the slice of the show

0:13:110:13:12

that tries to make your travelling life easier.

0:13:120:13:15

Let's start with Richard Long, who says...

0:13:150:13:18

Now, if the astonishing hilltop palace complex of Machu Picchu

0:13:280:13:32

is top of your list, then you need

0:13:320:13:34

to get yourself to the ancient Inca capital of Cuzco,

0:13:340:13:37

most easily reached via the Peruvian capital, Lima.

0:13:370:13:41

If you're in reasonable shape, let me recommend the Inca Trail,

0:13:410:13:45

possibly the world's most exciting high altitude hike

0:13:450:13:49

along a pedestrian highway, created six centuries ago.

0:13:490:13:53

It leads you to Machu Picchu, from where you can explore

0:13:530:13:57

the rest of the Sacred Valley, refreshingly free from tourists.

0:13:570:14:01

Now, you might take a glance at the map

0:14:010:14:04

and decide that the beach element can easily be solved by picking somewhere

0:14:040:14:07

on Peru's Pacific coast,

0:14:070:14:09

but I strongly recommend you choose

0:14:090:14:11

the Atlantic instead, for warmer weather

0:14:110:14:13

and a stronger resort culture.

0:14:130:14:16

Next, let's call up Wilson Loo, who's in Singapore at the moment, but

0:14:160:14:21

I understand you're planning something of

0:14:210:14:23

a great railway adventure.

0:14:230:14:25

I am going on the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Beijing.

0:14:250:14:30

Where should I stop on the way?

0:14:300:14:32

That's much better than going straight through.

0:14:320:14:35

The first essential I suggest

0:14:350:14:37

is Yekaterinburg, which is

0:14:370:14:40

the first city on the Asian side

0:14:400:14:42

of the Ural Mountains.

0:14:420:14:44

Next, Irkutsk, in eastern Siberia,

0:14:440:14:47

is a beautiful city called the Paris of the East

0:14:470:14:51

and gives access to the wonderful Lake Baikal.

0:14:510:14:55

And since it's your best chance, probably,

0:14:550:14:58

of reaching Ulan Bator,

0:14:580:14:59

the capital of Outer Mongolia,

0:14:590:15:01

spend a couple of days there as well

0:15:010:15:04

before you finally reach

0:15:040:15:06

the capital of the People's Republic of China.

0:15:060:15:09

Now, for each edition of Global Guru,

0:15:090:15:11

there always seems to be one subject that stands out in the e-mails,

0:15:110:15:15

tweets and Facebook messages and this time, it's the northern lights.

0:15:150:15:19

Good question, Eleanor,

0:15:260:15:27

and one I've been puzzling over, too.

0:15:270:15:29

Only one way to find out about the chances of seeing the aurora borealis

0:15:290:15:33

and that's to ask the rocket scientists at NASA,

0:15:330:15:36

who know more about space than most of us.

0:15:360:15:38

Jeff Newmark of NASA assured me

0:15:380:15:40

that we are in a good spell,

0:15:400:15:42

which began in 2012

0:15:420:15:44

and will continue this year and next.

0:15:440:15:47

After that, you could wait anything

0:15:470:15:48

up to 11 years, says Jeff.

0:15:480:15:50

Let me add that the northern lights in my experience are fickle in the

0:15:500:15:54

extreme - even if you maximise your chances with a northerly location

0:15:540:15:59

and a long, clear night, there's no guarantee they'll come out to play.

0:15:590:16:03

Finally, Mimi Tanaman got in touch with a very specific question.

0:16:030:16:07

Well, there's an early flight at 5.05 in the morning between these

0:16:160:16:19

two great Pacific Northwest cities which is scheduled to get in

0:16:190:16:23

shortly before six at a fare of around 75.

0:16:230:16:26

Chances are, this would work fine, but if there is a delay,

0:16:260:16:30

you could miss the New York connection and since you'll be

0:16:300:16:33

travelling on separate tickets, that could prove stressful and expensive.

0:16:330:16:37

So I suggest taking the train the night before

0:16:370:16:39

to Seattle's King Street station and in the morning,

0:16:390:16:43

take the first Central Link train out to the airport.

0:16:430:16:46

That's all for now, but if you've got a travel question, I'm here to help.

0:16:460:16:50

Just e-mail [email protected]

0:16:500:16:54

and I'll do my very best to find you an answer.

0:16:540:16:57

From me, Simon Calder, the Global Guru,

0:16:570:17:00

bye for now and see you next time.

0:17:000:17:01

MUSIC: "Nothing But The Beat" by David Guetta

0:17:050:17:09

Now, most people come to the Maldives to swim,

0:17:220:17:24

sun themselves and maybe do a bit of snorkelling,

0:17:240:17:27

but at this island resort, you can also learn to become

0:17:270:17:30

a DJ in what is claimed to be the world's first underwater nightclub.

0:17:300:17:34

So this place is called subsix

0:17:370:17:40

because it's six metres underwater in the Indian Ocean.

0:17:400:17:43

Can you hear that?

0:17:430:17:45

That glugging noise? It's like the water lapping against the sides.

0:17:450:17:48

It feels like I'm walking into the belly of a whale.

0:17:480:17:52

MUSIC: "Rock DJ" by Robbie Williams

0:17:520:17:55

But apart from that, it's quite eerie and surreal,

0:17:550:17:58

I can't hear any music.

0:17:580:18:00

I guess it is 11 o'clock in the morning,

0:18:000:18:02

so I don't expect it to be rocking just yet!

0:18:020:18:04

Oh, wow! This is amazing!

0:18:070:18:10

SO James Bond!

0:18:100:18:11

The club was actually constructed on dry land

0:18:190:18:22

and then lowered into the ocean.

MUSIC: "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke

0:18:250:18:28

-Hi.

-Hi! You must be Andrew. Carmen.

0:18:300:18:34

So what is it like,

0:18:340:18:35

being a DJ at the world's first underwater music club?

0:18:350:18:39

It's pretty good! Don't have to wear a snorkel, but it's all right.

0:18:390:18:42

# I got, you got We got everybody... #

0:18:420:18:46

OK, this is a kind of off-the-wall thing to learn on holiday...

0:18:460:18:50

Yes, it's not the most expected, like, lesson that you'd do.

0:18:500:18:54

# I'll be quite polite

0:18:540:18:56

# But when I rock the mic I rock the mic right... #

0:18:560:18:59

Wow, well, this looks a bit more complicated than I'd imagined.

0:18:590:19:02

-No, it's fine, don't worry. Shall I walk you through it?

-Yes, please.

0:19:020:19:05

-# But if you're selling it

-Selling it, selling it

# It's all right... #

0:19:090:19:11

So you've got the tunes each side,

0:19:110:19:13

we've got the two decks,

0:19:130:19:16

that one controls that side, this one controls that side.

0:19:160:19:19

You've got these guys here,

0:19:190:19:22

that controls the speed of the record.

0:19:220:19:25

So, like, up and down, faster and slower.

0:19:250:19:28

So here, we're going to play Robin Thicke, big tune.

0:19:280:19:31

# Everybody get up... #

0:19:310:19:33

Here you go - try these on.

0:19:330:19:35

# I don't want to rock, DJ

0:19:350:19:38

# DJ

0:19:380:19:40

# But you're making me feel so nice... #

0:19:400:19:43

-Now I feel like a DJ!

-OK, so here you go.

0:19:430:19:47

-How do I do that?!

0:19:580:20:00

Let's teach you that one. Get this one playing...

0:20:000:20:03

-Get ready to press play on that.

-What? I've got to press play twice?

0:20:030:20:06

You've got to spin this and then you're going to press play there. OK?

0:20:060:20:10

NEW TRACK PLAYS

0:20:140:20:15

# Everybody get up...

0:20:150:20:17

# Whoo! #

0:20:190:20:21

So, as a test of my new-found skills,

0:20:210:20:23

Andrew has agreed to let me DJ a set night at the club.

0:20:230:20:27

I don't really feel prepared after just a one-hour lesson!

0:20:270:20:33

-OK, I'm slightly nervous about tonight.

-You'll be fine.

0:20:330:20:36

-What are some top tips?

-Just don't be afraid to go cheesy.

0:20:360:20:40

What if I mess up the whole, you know...?

0:20:400:20:42

That's fine, you've got your spinback nailed. Yeah!

0:20:420:20:46

Just got to have the confidence.

0:20:460:20:48

If all else fails, just buy them a round.

0:20:480:20:50

# Eat, sleep, rave, repeat Eat, sleep, rave, repeat

0:20:500:20:54

# Eat, sleep, rave, repeat Eat, sleep, rave, repeat... #

MUSIC: "Stayin' Alive" by The Bee Gees

0:20:590:21:02

I'm greeted by a room full of very sedate people!

0:21:020:21:05

Maybe they've had too much sun?!

0:21:050:21:07

OK, so the aim of tonight is to get these Chinese tourists dancing.

0:21:070:21:12

OK...

0:21:120:21:14

I can see some head-nodding, some foot-tapping...

0:21:180:21:20

I think you need to go cheesier.

0:21:200:21:22

What's cheesier?

0:21:220:21:24

How about that?

0:21:240:21:25

# Everybody get up... #

0:21:280:21:30

SHE LAUGHS

0:21:300:21:32

You got them up!

0:21:320:21:34

# Heh, heh, heh, heh

0:21:350:21:38

# Heh, heh, heh

0:21:380:21:39

# Oh! Heh, heh, heh

0:21:390:21:41

# Whoo! #

0:21:410:21:42

-So, how did I do?

-I thought you did really well.

0:21:450:21:48

-You need to work on your counting.

-Yes, I'm not very good at counting!

0:21:480:21:52

It was like one, nine, off-beat, in-beat!

0:21:520:21:55

MUSIC: "Rock DJ" by Robbie Williams

0:21:550:21:59

-You got there, though. You got there.

-I got them dancing!

0:21:590:22:02

That was the main thing! They were conga-ing!

0:22:020:22:06

# I don't want to rock, DJ

0:22:070:22:11

# But you're making me feel so nice. #

0:22:110:22:15

Well, it was a fun night,

0:22:150:22:17

but I think I'll leave it up to the professionals!

0:22:170:22:19

Well, that's all we've got time for in this edition of the programme...

0:22:190:22:22

And don't forget to join us next week,

0:22:260:22:28

when Christa Larwood heads to the beautiful but troubled Guatemala

0:22:280:22:31

to discover if the Central American country's reputation for violence

0:22:310:22:35

is standing in the way of becoming a world-class tourist destination.

0:22:350:22:39

What's truly astounding about this place is that

0:22:410:22:44

there are these ruins spread everywhere,

0:22:440:22:46

some of the best I've seen in the world, and yet...

0:22:460:22:49

There's no-one here.

0:22:490:22:51

If you'd like to get in touch,

0:22:520:22:54

the e-mail address is on the screen now and don't forget,

0:22:540:22:57

we're all over social media like Facebook and Twitter.

0:22:570:23:00

But from all the team here in the Maldives,

0:23:000:23:02

it's goodbye and see you next time.
