It's one of New York's most iconic neighbourhoods, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
but its future is in serious doubt. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
On this week's programme, we'll find out why. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
The challenges facing Chinatown - how rising rents | 0:00:39 | 0:00:43
and relentless development are threatening | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
the culture of this Manhattan neighbourhood. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48

MUSIC: "The Sidewalks Of New York" by Duke Ellington | 0:01:12 | 0:01:17
Located on the southern tip of Manhattan, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
Chinatown is one of New York's best-known neighbourhoods. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
Hundreds of thousands of migrants have flocked here for centuries, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
hoping to build a new life for themselves. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
This part of New York has been influenced by Chinese culture | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
for many years, but things are changing. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
A recent report has thrown up a real concern over the future | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
of Chinatown in New York, showing a population decrease of 7% since 1990. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:11
Much of the blame falls on the recent relaxation of zoning rules - | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
rising rent and luxury developments are changing the culture | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
of the area, with many Chinese migrants simply priced out. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:26
And there are also big declines in traditional businesses and tourism. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
I met up with Wellington Chen, the executive director | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
of New York's Chinatown Partnership, to find out why. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
So, Wellington, what has happened to Chinatown in New York? | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
Chinatown is going through a transitional cycle, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
like many other groups that have preceded us. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
We are trying to adjust to the best we can. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
And do you see less tourists coming, or the business losing...? | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
Yes, after the tragedies of September 11th, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
this was part of the frozen zone and it basically pushes... | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
It pushed the garment industry over a cliff. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
It was already teetering, you know. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
The garment industry was not competitive in terms | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
of the worldwide market | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
and so that dispersed a lot of our workers | 0:03:11 | 0:03:17
to the other boroughs. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
A number of businesses in Chinatown point to the tragedies of 9/11 | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
as a turning point for the area, with some companies never recovering. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:32
THEY SPEAK IN CHINESE | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
Wilson Tang's family have run the Nom Wah Tea Parlor for over 60 years - | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
their proximity to the World Trade Center saw a big decline in business. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:44
But he's been working hard over the past few years to make | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
the restaurant relevant for modern Chinatown. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
When I took over three years ago, it was kind of | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
rebuilding the brand and starting from scratch again. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
What have you done to keep this place up, | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
keep it up with the times? | 0:04:01 | 0:04:02
Well, that's a really good question. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
So, three years ago, the one thing I knew was social media | 0:04:05 | 0:04:11
and you know, everyone had a Facebook page. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:16
That's really what got the word out. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
If I had to think back on, like, "How did this come about?" - | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
it was through Facebook. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
So if you hadn't have been on Facebook | 0:04:24 | 0:04:25
and through social media, that wouldn't have happened? | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
Yes, it would have been like a different game. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
Wilson's restaurant is a great success story for Chinatown, | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
but, for many, staying in Manhattan is financially not an option. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
So where are Chinese residents and businesses now? | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
And what about new arrivals? | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
Well, according to the latest American Census, | 0:04:54 | 0:04:56
Flushing in Queens has seen a 93% increase in Chinese | 0:04:56 | 0:05:01
residents during the ten years to 2010, | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03
whilst Manhattan's Chinatown population was decreasing. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:08
Packed full of traditional restaurants and small businesses, | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
to many, this is now the beating heart | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
of the Chinese community in New York. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
So far, though, very few tourists head here. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:20
But could the promise of authentic food and traditional goods be | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
enough to tempt tourists to leave Manhattan and head into Queens? | 0:05:23 | 0:05:28
If I would have more time - I have just four days in New York - | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
of course I would visit Queens and also the Bronx, | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
but time is too short. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
Where is Queens? I don't know. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
We only stay at Manhattan, so we go to Chinatown, | 0:05:38 | 0:05:43
-Central Park, voila, all the tourist things. -Yes, I would. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
But I've never heard about Chinatown in Queens, so... | 0:05:47 | 0:05:51
but I would be interested. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:52
Whilst the challenges remain great, | 0:05:55 | 0:05:57
Wellington insists that residents and businesses alike will work together | 0:05:57 | 0:06:01
and fight to keep this little part of China in Manhattan alive. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:06
What's the future of Chinatown? | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
I have no doubt, I am an optimist, | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
I have no doubt that Chinatown will be here...for a long, long time. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:15
The question is, really, the degree and success - | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
the vibrancy of it. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
And that's something that we are taking very seriously. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:25
Ade Adepitan in New York's Chinatown. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
And if you're thinking of heading there soon, | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
here's a few things you might want to know before you book your trip. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:43

Let's start this week's travel update with... | 0:07:37 | 0:07:42
In Moldova, everybody makes wine. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:02
Ciotca has been making wine since she was 13, | 0:09:02 | 0:09:06
just like Moldovans have done for more than 4,000 years. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:09
They've only recently started making GREAT wine. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:11
I hope and I think we are getting better. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
For decades, the USSR treated Moldova as its personal vineyard, | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
at one point, making this tiny nation the seventh-largest | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
wine producer on Earth. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
Since Soviet rule, | 0:09:32 | 0:09:33
state-run Milestii Mici winery sells the world's largest wine collection, | 0:09:33 | 0:09:37
about 65,000,000 litres in a 200km limestone cave system. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:42
That you can DRIVE through! | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
If you look just in front of us, you see | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
-that's a walled door on wheels. This may close and open. -Awesome! | 0:09:50 | 0:09:54
Of course everything was hidden | 0:09:54 | 0:09:56
and no-one could realise that something behind the wall. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
'Milestii Mici has a number of hidden treasures. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:02
'Like this secret door - a throwback to Soviet prohibition | 0:10:02 | 0:10:05
'from 1985 to 1987, when the government physically | 0:10:05 | 0:10:09
'destroyed Moldovan vineyards and crippled its wine industry.' | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
-This was to hide wine from the government, right? -Yes. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:15
-But isn't this government-owned? -Yes! | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
So the government was hiding wine from the government? | 0:10:17 | 0:10:20
This is the story, just a legend, of course! | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
About 35km south, state-owned winery Cricova holds | 0:10:23 | 0:10:27
the world's second-largest wine collection. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:29
It stretches through 120km of tunnels | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
and reaches depths of 80m underground. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:34
Bottles from his collection... | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
Can you drink a bottle of Goering's wine? | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
-No! -I would get some sort of sick pleasure from that! | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
'Despite its wide collection, | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
'including private stores for Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor | 0:10:51 | 0:10:55
'Angela Merkel, Cricova is most famous for its sparkling wine.' | 0:10:55 | 0:10:59
After experiencing the history of Moldovan wine, | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
I was curious to see what its future holds, | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
so I headed to the Stefan Voda region, | 0:11:14 | 0:11:16
and acclaimed boutique winery, Et Cetera. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:18
We have wine country, but we forgot about our wine... | 0:11:18 | 0:11:22
..our local indigenous varieties. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:25
Et Cetera is only the second winery to reintroduce Feteasca Neagra, a local variety | 0:11:25 | 0:11:30
that disappeared from the Moldovan landscape during Soviet | 0:11:30 | 0:11:33
control, when quantity of wine was of much bigger concern than quality. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:37
This is something I would say between Cabernet Sauvignon | 0:11:37 | 0:11:41
and Merlot. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:42
To be honest, I don't how it's supposed to be, | 0:11:42 | 0:11:45
because I never tried the perfect Feteasca Neagra. I would love. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:49
A Russian ban on Moldovan wine in 2006 forced Moldovan | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
wineries like Et Cetera to start making better wines | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
for European tastes. | 0:11:58 | 0:11:59
Another wine embargo from Russia in 2013 has local vineyards | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
continuing efforts to improve their product. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
Only those willing to make the journey to Moldova will | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
discover the secrets of the world's most unique wine destination. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
MUSIC: "Rock DJ" by Robbie Williams | 0:12:17 | 0:12:21
Still to come on the programme... | 0:12:21 | 0:12:23
RECORD SCREECHES TO A STOP | 0:12:23 | 0:12:25
Do you want to learn that one? | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
-How do I do THAT? -OK, let's teach you that one! | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
I'll be testing out my DJ skills at an underwater nightclub | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
here in the Maldives... | 0:12:32 | 0:12:34
And what are the real chances of seeing Northern Lights? | 0:12:36 | 0:12:40
Welcome to the slice of the show | 0:13:11 | 0:13:12
that tries to make your travelling life easier. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:15
Let's start with Richard Long, who says... | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
Now, if the astonishing hilltop palace complex of Machu Picchu | 0:13:28 | 0:13:32
is top of your list, then you need | 0:13:32 | 0:13:34
to get yourself to the ancient Inca capital of Cuzco, | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
most easily reached via the Peruvian capital, Lima. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:41
If you're in reasonable shape, let me recommend the Inca Trail, | 0:13:41 | 0:13:45
possibly the world's most exciting high altitude hike | 0:13:45 | 0:13:49
along a pedestrian highway, created six centuries ago. | 0:13:49 | 0:13:53
It leads you to Machu Picchu, from where you can explore | 0:13:53 | 0:13:57
the rest of the Sacred Valley, refreshingly free from tourists. | 0:13:57 | 0:14:01
Now, you might take a glance at the map | 0:14:01 | 0:14:04
and decide that the beach element can easily be solved by picking somewhere | 0:14:04 | 0:14:07
on Peru's Pacific coast, | 0:14:07 | 0:14:09
but I strongly recommend you choose | 0:14:09 | 0:14:11
the Atlantic instead, for warmer weather | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
and a stronger resort culture. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:16
Next, let's call up Wilson Loo, who's in Singapore at the moment, but | 0:14:16 | 0:14:21
I understand you're planning something of | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
a great railway adventure. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:25
I am going on the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Beijing. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:30
Where should I stop on the way? | 0:14:30 | 0:14:32
That's much better than going straight through. | 0:14:32 | 0:14:35
The first essential I suggest | 0:14:35 | 0:14:37
is Yekaterinburg, which is | 0:14:37 | 0:14:40
the first city on the Asian side | 0:14:40 | 0:14:42
of the Ural Mountains. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:44
Next, Irkutsk, in eastern Siberia, | 0:14:44 | 0:14:47
is a beautiful city called the Paris of the East | 0:14:47 | 0:14:51
and gives access to the wonderful Lake Baikal. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:55
And since it's your best chance, probably, | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
of reaching Ulan Bator, | 0:14:58 | 0:14:59
the capital of Outer Mongolia, | 0:14:59 | 0:15:01
spend a couple of days there as well | 0:15:01 | 0:15:04
before you finally reach | 0:15:04 | 0:15:06
the capital of the People's Republic of China. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:09
Now, for each edition of Global Guru, | 0:15:09 | 0:15:11
there always seems to be one subject that stands out in the e-mails, | 0:15:11 | 0:15:15
tweets and Facebook messages and this time, it's the northern lights. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:19
Good question, Eleanor, | 0:15:26 | 0:15:27
and one I've been puzzling over, too. | 0:15:27 | 0:15:29
Only one way to find out about the chances of seeing the aurora borealis | 0:15:29 | 0:15:33
and that's to ask the rocket scientists at NASA, | 0:15:33 | 0:15:36
who know more about space than most of us. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:38
Jeff Newmark of NASA assured me | 0:15:38 | 0:15:40
that we are in a good spell, | 0:15:40 | 0:15:42
which began in 2012 | 0:15:42 | 0:15:44
and will continue this year and next. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:47
After that, you could wait anything | 0:15:47 | 0:15:48
up to 11 years, says Jeff. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:50
Let me add that the northern lights in my experience are fickle in the | 0:15:50 | 0:15:54
extreme - even if you maximise your chances with a northerly location | 0:15:54 | 0:15:59
and a long, clear night, there's no guarantee they'll come out to play. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:03
Finally, Mimi Tanaman got in touch with a very specific question. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:07
Well, there's an early flight at 5.05 in the morning between these | 0:16:16 | 0:16:19
two great Pacific Northwest cities which is scheduled to get in | 0:16:19 | 0:16:23
shortly before six at a fare of around 75. | 0:16:23 | 0:16:26
Chances are, this would work fine, but if there is a delay, | 0:16:26 | 0:16:30
you could miss the New York connection and since you'll be | 0:16:30 | 0:16:33
travelling on separate tickets, that could prove stressful and expensive. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
So I suggest taking the train the night before | 0:16:37 | 0:16:39
to Seattle's King Street station and in the morning, | 0:16:39 | 0:16:43
take the first Central Link train out to the airport. | 0:16:43 | 0:16:46
That's all for now, but if you've got a travel question, I'm here to help. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:50
Just e-mail [email protected] | 0:16:50 | 0:16:54
and I'll do my very best to find you an answer. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:57
From me, Simon Calder, the Global Guru, | 0:16:57 | 0:17:00
bye for now and see you next time. | 0:17:00 | 0:17:01
MUSIC: "Nothing But The Beat" by David Guetta | 0:17:05 | 0:17:09
Now, most people come to the Maldives to swim, | 0:17:22 | 0:17:24
sun themselves and maybe do a bit of snorkelling, | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
but at this island resort, you can also learn to become | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
a DJ in what is claimed to be the world's first underwater nightclub. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:34
So this place is called subsix | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
because it's six metres underwater in the Indian Ocean. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:43
Can you hear that? | 0:17:43 | 0:17:45
That glugging noise? It's like the water lapping against the sides. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:48
It feels like I'm walking into the belly of a whale. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:52
MUSIC: "Rock DJ" by Robbie Williams | 0:17:52 | 0:17:55
But apart from that, it's quite eerie and surreal, | 0:17:55 | 0:17:58
I can't hear any music. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:00
I guess it is 11 o'clock in the morning, | 0:18:00 | 0:18:02
so I don't expect it to be rocking just yet! | 0:18:02 | 0:18:04
Oh, wow! This is amazing! | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
SO James Bond! | 0:18:10 | 0:18:11
The club was actually constructed on dry land | 0:18:19 | 0:18:22
and then lowered into the ocean. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:23
MUSIC: "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
-Hi. -Hi! You must be Andrew. Carmen. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:34
So what is it like, | 0:18:34 | 0:18:35
being a DJ at the world's first underwater music club? | 0:18:35 | 0:18:39
It's pretty good! Don't have to wear a snorkel, but it's all right. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:42
# I got, you got We got everybody... # | 0:18:42 | 0:18:46
OK, this is a kind of off-the-wall thing to learn on holiday... | 0:18:46 | 0:18:50
Yes, it's not the most expected, like, lesson that you'd do. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:54
# I'll be quite polite | 0:18:54 | 0:18:56
# But when I rock the mic I rock the mic right... # | 0:18:56 | 0:18:59
Wow, well, this looks a bit more complicated than I'd imagined. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
-No, it's fine, don't worry. Shall I walk you through it? -Yes, please. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
-# But if you're selling it -Selling it, selling it | 0:19:05 | 0:19:09
# It's all right... # | 0:19:09 | 0:19:11
So you've got the tunes each side, | 0:19:11 | 0:19:13
we've got the two decks, | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
that one controls that side, this one controls that side. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
You've got these guys here, | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
that controls the speed of the record. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:25
So, like, up and down, faster and slower. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
So here, we're going to play Robin Thicke, big tune. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:31
# Everybody get up... # | 0:19:31 | 0:19:33
Here you go - try these on. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35

Andrew has agreed to let me DJ a set night at the club. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:27
I don't really feel prepared after just a one-hour lesson! | 0:20:27 | 0:20:33
-OK, I'm slightly nervous about tonight. -You'll be fine. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:36

Maybe they've had too much sun?! | 0:21:05 | 0:21:07
OK, so the aim of tonight is to get these Chinese tourists dancing. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:12
OK... | 0:21:12 | 0:21:14 | |
I can see some head-nodding, some foot-tapping... | 0:21:18 | 0:21:20
I think you need to go cheesier. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
