The biggest global sporting events of 2017 are coming to London.

And, with them, the greatest athletes on the planet,

all competing for gold at the World ParaAthletics

and the IAAF World Championships, London 2017

and one of you is going play a massive part.

One lucky Blue Peter viewer will get to design both mascots

for the London 2017 Championships.

Oh, yes!

The winning designs will be made into the official mascots

that will rub shoulders with the likes of Mr Usain Bolt,

Jonnie Peacock, Hannah Cockcroft and Mo Farah.

Judging your entries are two gold-medal winning superstars.

Double Paralympic and triple World and European gold medallist

Richard Whitehead.

And Olympic triple World and European champion,

Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Not only will your designs be turned into the official mascots of

London 2017, and be seen all over the world by millions of fans,

you'll also get tickets to the Championships,

receive a VIP tour of the London stadium and come face-to-face

with some of THE best athletes in the world.

This is off the charts.

To win this amazing prize,

you need to come up with two original mascot designs.

One for the World ParaAthletics Championships

and one for the IAAF World Championships.

and write a paragraph explaining how you came up with your designs.

So, what are you waiting for?

It's time to get involved with something special!

-It's a tingle, it's a tingle!

The double happy dance, everybody. That's how excited he is.

Oh, Radz! You need to chill. We've got to go through the rules.

-I've got to talk about details.

-OK.

First of all you need to design TWO mascots.

They each need to have a name.

One mascot for each of the Championships.

The mascots need to get along and they need to encourage each other

-to try their best.

-You can't copy anybody else's mascot.

That would be silly.

You want it to be YOUR design that wins,

so it needs to be original and unique to you.

That also means you can't copy anything Blue Peter-y.

That's a new word. You can't copy the ship, the presenters or logo.

-In fact, any logo at all.

-Let's talk about more musts and must-nots.

You cannot favour a particular country with design or colour.

It must be bold, creative

and, in an off-the-charts way, in love with athletics.

-That's official.

-So many rules. This is one of the last ones.

You'll need to send it by post by 12 noon on February 10th.

That is really important that you get it to us on time.

If you're sending it in a large envelope, like the one I have here,

you will need a large letter stamp.

That's really important. You don't want to get it wrong.

You will be disqualified and we'll be upset.

Your mascot could be picked by the World ParaAthletics or the IAAF

World Championships London 2017, two of the biggest events on the planet.

This is very exciting.

You are an Olympic champion, a three-time world champion,

-How do you feel about it?

-Yeah, so excited.

This year I'm retired, so I won't get to compete.

To be on the panel with Richard

and picking the winner for the mascot is so exciting.

It's really good news for everybody else you've retired because they

have a chance.

Richard, not only have you won silver and gold at Rio,

you are a world record-holder in sprinting and long distance

and now you've set your sights on London 2017.

Yeah, London 2017. A big event. It's great that Blue Peter are involved.

There are athletes from the Olympic side - Mo,

Usain Bolt,

and obviously myself in the Para event.

-So hopefully I can bring back more silverware.

-We think you can.

Jess, will you be a scary judge?

What are you looking for with this competition?

-I'm not going to be a scary judge.

-Good.

We're looking for people to be really creative.

They've got to be bold,

they've got to love athletics and both mascots have to be friends.

-They've got to interact.

-We like that.

Hi, my name's Poppy.

I wanted to see some Olympians and Paralympians on Blue Peter.

My question is - athletes have their highs and lows.

What inspires you through your lows?

A great question, Poppy.

I am glad she wants to see more Olympians and Paralympians

on the television.

It's great. For me, when you are at your low,

you need to have lots of positiveness around you.

It's really important to have the positive people around you

to support you, to have more success.

Jess, a question for you from the cutest person on the planet, Evie.

Hi, Jessica. My name is Evie.

On my Purple Badge form I asked to see you as a guest on Blue Peter.

My question for you is

would you like your son Reggie to do athletics when he is older?

-Good question.

-Oh, I love Evie already!

I would love him to do athletics,

of course, but I'm not going to be a pushy parent.

I will guide him into sport gently. Thank you for your question.

And make him do lots of athletics.

This is where we cut to a shot of Reggie when he's 16 playing guitar

We begin with a classic Blue Peter world record attempt.

This is the record for the most badges pinned on a person

Fortunately, I'm allowed one quick practice to get myself ready.

-It must be scary doing it.

-As I try one of the 180-degree turns...

I thought that would be good then. He tripped straight into the water.

OK, Radzi, one last chance. Come on!

No matter how many times I see that, I still can't believe it happened.

And speaking of I can't believe it happened moments, I give you one of

the most famous challenges in Blue Peter's epic history - wing walking.

You will be standing on the wing and passing that baton.

So Lindsey is passing it to Radzi.

-They need to be so exact in their flying.

Let's not forget, I'm upside down.

I feel sorry for Lindsey having to go upside down.

Hi, I'm Jake, and on my Purple Badge form, I asked to see animation,

so here's a film about Kubo And The Two Strings.

My name is Kubo. This is my story.

Our enemies aren't far behind.

Your magic is the only thing that can protect us.

-You need to learn control.

-Release!

'Set in Japan, Kubo And The Two Strings tells the story of

'a young boy who goes on a thrilling quest to save his family.'

-Don't touch anything.

-He did it.

'What makes the film so special,

'it's created using something called stop-motion animation and I want to

'find out more, so who better to talk to than its director

'Travis Knight?'

-Travis, first of all, it's a pleasure to meet you.

-Likewise.

When I first saw the trailer to this film, I presumed it was CGI,

but it's not, is it?

No, most animated films these days are made in a computer

-but we make films in stop-motion.

-What actually is stop-motion?

It is simple, you have a puppet and the animator moves that puppet

one frame at a time, takes a picture with the camera.

They will move it a bit more, take another picture and on and on

and eventually you take enough images and put them together and it

looks like the thing is moving.

How long did it take to make the film doing it like that?

-It took us five years to make this movie.

-Five years?

Impressive.

In terms of the characters we have here, how do you start making them?

Are these made by machinery?

They are all made by hand,

so we start with clay to make the sculpture and then you make

the skeleton, which is always made out of metal.

So, Monkey, she's pretty squishy, you can see that she's soft,

but her face is actually hard. It's a replacement face.

The way we get the faces of these puppets is we have a series of

these different expressions and we take them off and put them back on.

Kubo's is more standard.

His hair is made out of human hair

that we can actually move one frame at a time and get it to look like

it's blowing in the wind.

'We know that some of you guys at home are big fans of

'stop-motion animation because you've sent us some.'

Two Blue Peter viewers who also love stop-motion are Daniel and Eleanor

and they have given stop-motion a go themselves.

They would love for you to see it.

-Look, a tropical island, guys.

-Can we explore?

I wish we could, but we have no time.

We have to get to the Arctic quickly.

-A shark trying to interrupt!

-Oh!

He's done it! He won!

That's pretty impressive. It's quite ambitious.

That was way more ambitious than the things I did early on.

'Daniel and Eleanor, you've impressed a Hollywood director.

'It just goes to show, if you send your creations to Blue Peter

'you never know who will see them.

'And there's no way I'm leaving here without having a go myself.'

Could I use stop-motion to maybe raise Kubo's hand,

raise the badge up and we'll get to see that on the show?

-You bet.

-Amazing.

-Give it a shot.

All you have to do is grab his arm, give it a nudge and he'll move it.

OK. It really is subtle.

Your instinct is right, you are animating the hand and keeping

the base stable, that is what we do as animators all the time.

I'm really afraid of knocking it over!

'And the result? Not bad. Now I just need five more years!'

That was amazing, almost as amazing as Daniel and Eleanor's film.
