Rachel Yankey, top international footballer

0:00:440:00:47

and all-round sporting superstar.

0:00:470:00:50

But when Rachel's not scoring goals for her team,

0:00:500:00:54

she's playing with the Footy Pups.

0:00:540:00:57

THEY CHEER

0:00:590:01:01

Hi, everyone. We're all warmed up, so it's time to get moving.

0:01:030:01:07

Today, on my team, we have...

0:01:090:01:11

Number one, Emily.

0:01:110:01:13

Fantastic, Emily!

0:01:140:01:16

Number two, Dan.

0:01:170:01:18

Oh, nice dribbling, Dan!

0:01:200:01:22

Number three, Paige.

0:01:220:01:25

Oh, I like that, Paige!

0:01:250:01:26

Number four, George.

0:01:270:01:29

Well done, George!

0:01:310:01:32

Number five, Erin.

0:01:330:01:35

Fantastic dribbling, Erin!

0:01:350:01:37

Number six, Finley.

0:01:380:01:41

Woo, look at that, Finley!

0:01:410:01:43

Also joining us are Footy Pups, Rex and Rozzie.

0:01:430:01:46

So, that's today's team.

0:01:480:01:50

CHEERING

0:01:500:01:52

-OK, guys, gather round. It's team-talk time!

-ALL:

-Yay!

0:01:520:01:56

Today, we're going to look at cricket.

0:01:560:01:58

It's a sport you play in teams with a bat and a ball.

0:01:580:02:02

Cricket is quite different to football,

0:02:020:02:04

so I've invited along a friend to tell us a bit more.

0:02:040:02:07

Niall O'Brien -

0:02:080:02:10

international cricketer, superstar batsman and wicketkeeper.

0:02:100:02:15

When Niall's not playing for Ireland...

0:02:150:02:18

he's playing with his county cricket club.

0:02:180:02:21

Hi, Niall. Thanks for joining us.

0:02:220:02:25

-Thanks for having me.

-Can you explain cricket to us?

0:02:250:02:28

Yeah. Cricket is like football. There's two teams.

0:02:280:02:31

One team bats and protects the wicket,

0:02:310:02:34

while the second team bowls.

0:02:340:02:36

The wickets are three poles with two pieces of wood on top, called bails.

0:02:360:02:40

It's like a goal in football.

0:02:400:02:42

A bowler tries to hit it and the batsman defends it.

0:02:420:02:45

Wow! Sounds exciting.

0:02:450:02:47

So, we strike the ball with our bat, instead of our boot.

0:02:470:02:50

Is there a special way to hold the bat?

0:02:500:02:52

If we place one hand on top of the handle, second hand underneath,

0:02:520:02:56

and you can see we've got two Vs.

0:02:560:02:58

-That's how we hold it.

-OK. Brilliant. Shall we have a go?

0:02:580:03:03

Let's see if we can make those Vs with your hands. Well done.

0:03:030:03:07

-Excellent!

-What are the three things to remember when batting?

0:03:070:03:11

We need to make sure we lift the bat up, not too high.

0:03:110:03:14

Step towards the ball and swing through.

0:03:140:03:17

-So, Niall's set us up with a game. What do we need to do here?

-OK.

0:03:170:03:21

The aim is to keep the ball on the ground,

0:03:210:03:23

line ourselves with the ball and hit it through the arch.

0:03:230:03:27

Great start from the team!

0:03:270:03:29

Lift your bat back, step forward and then swing your bat forward to hit.

0:03:290:03:34

Yeah!

0:03:340:03:36

Brilliant stuff!

0:03:360:03:37

See that power?

0:03:370:03:39

Nice!

0:03:390:03:40

Dan lines it up. Lovely!

0:03:400:03:43

Focus your eyes on the ball.

0:03:430:03:45

-Yeah!

-Yes!

0:03:450:03:47

One V, two Vs, OK? That will give you control.

0:03:470:03:51

Emily takes a swing.

0:03:510:03:52

Nicely done!

0:03:520:03:54

That's a good shot!

0:03:540:03:56

Whilst these guys keep practising, here's a reminder for you at home.

0:03:560:04:01

Raise your bat, step forward

0:04:010:04:04

and swing the bat forward to strike the ball.

0:04:040:04:08

Now, we have a challenge.

0:04:090:04:10

Throw the ball to your partner who needs to bat it away.

0:04:100:04:14

Off you go!

0:04:140:04:15

Good bowl from Dan.

0:04:150:04:17

Great hit!

0:04:170:04:19

-Yeah!

-Yeah!

0:04:190:04:21

Keep your eyes on the ball,

0:04:210:04:22

so you can get the timing right of when to swing for it.

0:04:220:04:25

Lovely stuff!

0:04:250:04:27

Too early. Step into it.

0:04:280:04:30

Great advice, Niall.

0:04:310:04:33

Awesome!

0:04:330:04:34

Brilliant, Emily! High five on that one!

0:04:370:04:40

Oof! Good catch!

0:04:400:04:42

-Well done, Rex!

-Thanks, Rozzie! Cricket is fun, isn't it?

0:04:420:04:47

Remember that time Freddie taught us how to play?

0:04:470:04:50

Ha-ha! Oh, yes.

0:04:500:04:51

Welcome to Pupton Park, where the Cheer-fleaders

0:04:540:04:57

have turned the ground... into a cricket pitch?!

0:04:570:05:00

Woo-hoo!

0:05:000:05:02

-Agh!

-Woo-hoo! Hee-hee!

0:05:020:05:05

Huddle up, Pups!

0:05:050:05:06

Today, you're going to play a game

0:05:060:05:08

of cricket against the Cheer-fleaders.

0:05:080:05:11

But we've never played cricket before!

0:05:110:05:15

Oh! This looks scary!

0:05:150:05:18

Don't worry, Pups.

0:05:180:05:20

Cricket uses some of the same skills we use in football.

0:05:200:05:23

And, look, I've made a cricket scoreboard

0:05:230:05:26

out of some bits of wood I found in my shed.

0:05:260:05:29

Isn't she beautiful?

0:05:290:05:32

Oh!

0:05:320:05:33

In cricket, one team bowls the ball, to try and hit these bits of wood,

0:05:350:05:40

called a wicket.

0:05:400:05:41

The other team protects the wicket, using their bat to hit the ball.

0:05:410:05:47

The batting team works in pairs.

0:05:470:05:49

When they hit the ball, they score points, known as runs,

0:05:490:05:53

by running from one wicket to the other! Woo-hoo!

0:05:530:05:57

What fun!

0:05:570:05:58

Agh!

0:06:020:06:03

If a fielder catches the ball before it bounces,

0:06:030:06:08

the batter is out.

0:06:080:06:10

The batter is also out if the bowler hits the wicket with the ball.

0:06:100:06:15

Ah, wow! Let's play!

0:06:150:06:18

Oh, can I bowl first?

0:06:180:06:19

Sounds like a Puppy Plan!

0:06:190:06:22

Ha-ha-ha!

0:06:260:06:27

Being wicketkeeper is just like being a goalkeeper -

0:06:270:06:31

I get to practise my catching and guard the wicket.

0:06:310:06:34

Ooh! The ball's a bit smaller, though.

0:06:340:06:36

Hee-hee-hee!

0:06:360:06:37

Oh!

0:06:370:06:39

You won't catch any cricket balls here, lad.

0:06:390:06:42

That's what I'm hoping!

0:06:420:06:44

Woo-hoo!

0:06:450:06:46

Catch it, laddie! Agh!

0:06:480:06:50

-Oh!

-Argh! Oh! Argh!

0:06:500:06:54

I'm supposed to chase the ball! The ball isn't supposed to chase me!

0:06:540:06:59

Yippee! Four runs!

0:07:000:07:03

Argh!

0:07:070:07:09

Woof! Ha-ha!

0:07:090:07:10

Nice catch, Benny.

0:07:100:07:12

Pickles, stay still.

0:07:140:07:17

-Huh?

-I'm trying to hide from the ball!

0:07:170:07:20

Ooh!

0:07:200:07:21

Oh, what a howler!

0:07:210:07:23

Three more runs! Woohoo!

0:07:250:07:28

Those Fleas have been rushed off their feet,

0:07:280:07:31

scoring an impressive 60 runs.

0:07:310:07:33

Now, it's the Pups' turn to bat, but what's Rex wearing?!

0:07:330:07:37

Ha-ha!

0:07:370:07:38

This'll stop that naughty ball from hitting me! Ha-ha!

0:07:380:07:42

Whoa!

0:07:420:07:43

Oof!

0:07:430:07:44

Do you need a hand up, Rex?

0:07:440:07:46

No, thanks. I'm just going to stay right here.

0:07:460:07:51

First in to bat for the Pups is Geraldine.

0:07:510:07:53

Allez! Woo, woo, woo!

0:07:570:08:00

Well done, Geraldine. That's one run.

0:08:010:08:04

Now, it's my turn.

0:08:040:08:07

Yah!

0:08:070:08:08

Oh! Mind my beautiful scoreboard!

0:08:080:08:12

Geraldine is running,

0:08:160:08:18

-but a Flea fielder has hit the wickets and she's out!

-Oh!

0:08:180:08:22

And as Benny goes in to bat, the score is now...erm...

0:08:220:08:26

Oh! Hang on a minute! Oh!

0:08:260:08:29

..60 runs to the Fleas

0:08:290:08:31

and 16 to the Pups.

0:08:310:08:33

-Yeah!

-Woof!

0:08:330:08:35

-Out!

-Oh!

0:08:350:08:39

-Oh!

-Do you want me to bat next, Rex?

0:08:390:08:42

Thanks, Rozzie.

0:08:420:08:44

Freddie, can I, uh, miss my go? I don't want that ball thrown at me.

0:08:440:08:48

Oh, that's what the bat's for, laddie.

0:08:480:08:51

You use it to deflect the ball,

0:08:510:08:53

just like you do with your foot in football.

0:08:530:08:56

Watch Rozzie.

0:08:560:08:57

Quick! Run, Pickles!

0:08:590:09:01

-HE GASPS

-Look out!

0:09:030:09:06

I'll save you!

0:09:060:09:08

-Oh!

-Argh!

0:09:080:09:10

Great shot, Rex. You saved me and my scoreboard!

0:09:100:09:15

Uh, does that mean I can go for tea now?

0:09:150:09:19

No, I think it's your turn to bat.

0:09:190:09:21

Uh-oh!

0:09:210:09:23

Whoa, whoa!

0:09:250:09:27

Oof. Huh? Hmm.

0:09:270:09:29

Oh, Rex!

0:09:290:09:31

You're meant to hit the ball with your bat, not your tail!

0:09:310:09:34

Use the bat? Of course!

0:09:340:09:37

Oh! Yah!

0:09:380:09:40

Don't forget to run, Rex!

0:09:400:09:42

Oh, yeah.

0:09:420:09:44

Ha-ha-ha! I think I'm getting the hang of this!

0:09:460:09:49

And as the match continues,

0:09:510:09:53

Rex and Pickles are the perfect pair,

0:09:530:09:55

scoring run after run!

0:09:550:09:57

Agh!

0:09:580:09:59

This is no place for my precious scoreboard!

0:09:590:10:03

Oh!

0:10:030:10:04

Looks like the Pups and Fleas have 60 runs each,

0:10:040:10:07

which means the Pups only need one run to win the match.

0:10:070:10:11

Yah!

0:10:150:10:16

-Ah! We've done it!

-Oh, I want to keep running!

0:10:190:10:23

Hee-hee-hee-hee!

0:10:230:10:25

Oh, at last, my scoreboard is safe!

0:10:250:10:30

Oh!

0:10:300:10:31

Oh! Whoa!

0:10:310:10:34

You!

0:10:340:10:36

Rex and Pickles have scored another six runs...

0:10:360:10:39

-BOTH:

-Bow-wow!

0:10:390:10:41

..meaning the Pups have won!

0:10:410:10:43

-Oh!

-HE SOBS

0:10:470:10:49

-FLEAS:

-Use your bat like a football boot!

0:10:490:10:51

When you hit the ball, just swing and shoot!

0:10:510:10:54

Go, go, go...

0:10:540:10:57

-Cricket bats!

-ALL CHEER

0:10:570:11:00

Oh, well done, Rex!

0:11:000:11:02

Huh? Whoa!

0:11:020:11:04

-Oh, scones!

-ALL LAUGH

0:11:040:11:08

Oh, Rex!

0:11:080:11:10

There was no need to be scared

0:11:120:11:14

of that cricket ball in the end, was there, Rex?

0:11:140:11:17

No, I just needed the bat to help me strike it.

0:11:170:11:20

-BOTH:

-Hi, Rachel!

-Hi, guys.

0:11:200:11:23

R-R-R...Rachel, what have you got there?

0:11:230:11:26

Huh? Oh, it's my bat friend.

0:11:260:11:29

Rex told me to bring him along.

0:11:290:11:31

Rachel, I meant your cricket bat, not a real bat!

0:11:310:11:35

-THEY LAUGH

-Oh, silly me!

0:11:350:11:39

Do you guys remember how to bat in cricket?

0:11:390:11:42

Raise your bat, step forward

0:11:420:11:46

and swing the bat to strike the ball.

0:11:460:11:48

-OK, guys, who fancies a game?!

-ALL:

-Yeah!

0:11:500:11:54

So, I've split you up into two teams.

0:11:540:11:56

We've got the Reds.

0:11:560:11:57

-Reds, can I have a cheer?

-ALL:

-Yay!

-Brilliant!

0:11:570:12:01

And we've got the Blues.

0:12:010:12:02

-Blues, let me hear you cheer! ALL:

-Yay!

0:12:020:12:05

Let's take a look with the Footy Pups, to see how to play.

0:12:050:12:08

Come and have a look.

0:12:080:12:09

To play this game, you need to bat, bowl and run.

0:12:090:12:12

A player from one team throws the ball to a player

0:12:120:12:15

from the other team who is batting.

0:12:150:12:18

They must strike the ball,

0:12:180:12:19

and if they do, they run back and forth to score a point.

0:12:190:12:23

If a ball hits the batter's wicket, they cannot run.

0:12:240:12:28

Oh!

0:12:280:12:29

After two balls, the team-mates batting and bowling swap over.

0:12:290:12:33

The winners of this game are the team who score the most points.

0:12:330:12:38

-Three, two, one...

-WHISTLE BLOWS

0:12:380:12:40

Both teams look ready. Oh, it's a huge hit from Erin!

0:12:400:12:44

Emily's got her work cut out to get that ball, as Erin scores a point.

0:12:440:12:48

Have another bowl, Emily. Swing your arm back.

0:12:480:12:51

She strikes again. Oh, she nearly forgot to run.

0:12:510:12:54

Sensational! Another point scored!

0:12:540:12:57

Good effort, well done!

0:12:570:12:59

Wait until he gets there, Finley.

0:12:590:13:02

-Finley bowls.

-Go, go, go, go!

0:13:020:13:05

-BOTH:

-Go, Dan! Go, Dan!

0:13:050:13:07

Dan, well done!

0:13:070:13:09

Finley lines up another.

0:13:090:13:11

Oh, he's got the wicket!

0:13:110:13:13

Paige is next bowling and George for the Blues batting.

0:13:130:13:18

Lift the bat up, step forward and swing through.

0:13:180:13:21

Wow, nicely done, George!

0:13:210:13:23

-Run, George! Run, run!

-And George scores a point.

0:13:230:13:26

A quick fastball from Paige, but he gets it.

0:13:260:13:29

-Paige runs to get the ball.

-Well done!

-Well done, George!

0:13:290:13:32

WHISTLE BLOWS It's all over. Let's have a replay.

0:13:320:13:36

The Blues were brilliant at batting.

0:13:360:13:38

They hit ball after ball and scored point after point.

0:13:380:13:41

Time for the Reds to bat. It's Erin bowling to Emily.

0:13:410:13:45

-Great hit!

-Run, Emily! Up and back!

0:13:450:13:47

That ball's trying to get away from Erin.

0:13:470:13:49

-BOTH:

-Emily! Emily!

0:13:490:13:51

Keep your eyes on the ball.

0:13:510:13:53

It's a short one, but she gets it

0:13:530:13:55

and is ready to run back and forth to each wicket.

0:13:550:13:59

Well done!

0:13:590:14:00

-Next batsman in.

-Dan bowls out to Finley.

0:14:000:14:03

He gets it away.

0:14:030:14:04

Good shot!

0:14:040:14:05

And he scores another point for the Reds.

0:14:050:14:08

-BOTH:
