-We start tonight by wishing a

-happy birthday to a special lady...

-..who won the hearts of the nation

-at the Abergavenny Eisteddfod.

-Do you remember this woman?

-Helena Jones captured the hearts of

-the nation on the Eisteddfod stage.

-She's just reached 100...

-..and we're wishing her a happy

-birthday at one of her six parties!

-A massive happy birthday to Helena.

-She was one of the highlights

-of Abergavenny Eisteddfod.

-Speaking of the Eisteddfod, we're at

-one of the summer's final festivals.

-It's Festival No 6 at Portmeirion.

-Before 8.00pm, we reveal the winner

-of our photography competition.

-Keith Morris is the judge

-and joins us in the studio.

-As you can see,

-he's been busy for hours.

-A TV or iPad will be on its way to

-you before the end of the programme.

-We're joined by the cartoonist,

-Sion Tomos Owen.

-You've been working on Pobol y Cwm.

-Yes, that's right.

-They filmed for a week at

-Tylorstowm.

-I've been to the Welsh Valleys

-with the actor, Jeremi Cockram.

-We visited seven places that Jeremi

-wanted to see.

-Dr Rhian Meara also discusses

-the British Science Festival...

-..and a brand-new project.

-Yes, that's right.

-I've been creating a new vocab.

-October marks 50 years since one

-of the darkest and saddest days...

-..in the history of

-the South Wales Valleys.

-On the morning of Friday 21 October,

-116 children and 28 adults died...

-..as a coal tip collapsed and

-engulfed the local primary school.

-The Aberfan Disaster has been etched

-into the memory of the Welsh nation.

-To commemorate

-the 50th anniversary...

-..S4C commissioned Sir Karl Jenkins

-to compose a song...

-..along with the Chief Bard,

-Mererid Hopwood.

-It'll be performed at a concert

-in October.

-I was a seven-year-old boy

-and I'll never forget the images...

-..of people digging

-with their bare hands.

-I wanted to create something

-on S4C to remember Aberfan.

-It would reflect the event but also

-show light and hope for the future.

-I arranged to meet Karl...

-..and persuaded him to write

-a cantata to commemorate Aberfan.

-It was exciting, humbling but

-carried a great responsibility...

-..in writing something

-that would resonate with people...

-..who were survivors,

-siblings or parents.

-Ian suggested that I work with the

-fantastic poet, Mererid Hopwood.

-She was the perfect companion

-for this journey...

-..that was both harrowing but also

-uplifting at the same time.

-The title of the piece is

-Cantata Memoria: For The Children.

-It's for those children

-who lost their lives...

-..but the survivors too

-who are now adults.

-We're all children at heart.

-The teachers and adults who lost

-their lives were also children.

-I was in the school

-as an eight-and-a-half-year-old.

-I was seriously injured and

-unconscious for most of the time.

-When I was brought out,

-I was placed with the dead bodies...

-..until someone thought

-they saw my foot move.

-I was re-examined, was still alive

-and taken to hospital.

-It obviously has an effect on how

-you move forward from that point...

-..and taking the positive

-out of that...

-..it's an important part for me

-to be doing what I do now...

-..to maintain the memorials of

-those who died on that fateful day.

-It isn't historic fact but a poem

-that speaks from the heart.

-It wasn't easy to do at first glance

-and it was a great responsibility.

-Residents of Aberfan have heard it

-and their response is encouraging.

-It's a fitting tribute...

-..to the strength of the spirit

-of humanity to rebuild itself...

-..from such shattering events

-as occurred in Aberfan 50 years ago.

-It's a piece for children

-and celebrating childhood.

-All that the nation remembers

-forms part of our identity.

-Aberfan was horrific but

-an important event to commemorate.

-It's a crucial part of our history

-as a nation.

-I hope it commemorates the event...

-..but also stands alone

-for many years to come...

-..and reflects the hope

-felt by Aberfan after this disaster.

-The 50th anniversary concert is at

-the Millennium Centre on 8 October.

-Those who follow Pobol y Cwm

-..have enjoyed watching additional

-scenes that have yet to be screened.

-They were filmed in the Rhondda as

-Sion White returns to the Valleys.

-when I was young and it was amazing.

-I thought it was one of the

-seven wonders of the Rhondda!

-There's the Hanging Gardens

-of Babylon...

-..so this is one of the

-hanging streets of the Rhondda!

-..an art teacher

-at Ferndale Grammar School.

-It's looking up the valley.

-It was painted from the base of the

-valley and we can see this street.

-Yes, I was the presenter

-of Pobol y Rhondda.

-It was aired earlier in the year.

-It was a so popular that

-we've had a second series.

-How did all come about

-with Pobol y Cwm?

-I was called by the makers

-of Pobol y Cwm...

-..and they told me about

-a special series of programmes...

-..that they were going to make

-in Tylorstown.

-I was told that Jeremi

-is from the area...

-..and he chose six or seven sites...

-..that meant something to him.

-The areas helped me with my work on

-Pobol y Rhondda.

-What was the feedback like

-on social media?

-There's been a lot of retweets.

-We can see that those people

-who have viewed the tweets...

-..are from all over the UK.

-These scenes are also quite positive

-for these areas.

-In our third video...

-..we went to the tip at Tylorstown.

-Jeremi was born in Ferndale.

-He now lives in Nelson.

-We could see both those areas

-This week, Helena from Brecon

-celebrated her 100th birthday.

-Yesterday, Daf Wyn spent the day

-with Helena, her family and friends.

-The year of 1916

-was an important year in Wales.

-Lloyd George

-became the Prime Minister.

-The National Library in Aberystwyth

-opened its doors.

-It also saw the birth

-of Helena Jones.

-She's the performer who captured

-our hearts at the Eisteddfod.

-Today, in Rhayader, there's a party

-to mark her 100th birthday.

-This was Helena's fifth party.

-The family came to the Elan Valley

-as it's very close to her heart.

-We last met at the Eisteddfod

-but you've recently had a birthday.

-Five and five cakes too.

-Your diet has gone

-out of the window!

-We had a lunch with her

-on her birthday.

-She has celebrated with the WI

-and had a garden party yesterday.

-She's here today and wants a tour

-of the Elan Valley as she loves it.

-I lived in the Elan Valley and

-was a teacher in the village school.

-I met my husband in the Elan Valley.

-I'm so happy

-to return to this place.

-You received a card from the Queen

-but how many cards have you had?

-Erm... 150!

-Have you recovered from gaining

-celebrity status at the Eisteddfod?

-No, I don't think so.

-I won a trophy at the Eisteddfod

-in 2013 and there wasn't any fuss.

-You had more attention because

-of your special birthday this year.

-She helps everyone and still

-does things with the Eisteddfod.

-She helps my children

-with their Welsh...

-..and wants them to compete

-What is your role in the festival?

-There's a lot of events for me

-at the festival.

-I've got a lecture on Thursday.

-There's also a guided tour

-for the deaf.

-We've also got an event

-on Thursday night at Ty Tawe.

-There's also going to be

-a family day on Saturday.

-It's all for free.

-The week's events are usually aimed

-at young adults...

-..but all are welcome.

-There's also a special launch

-of a new project.

-I'm a working on a new project

-to create some new vocabulary.

-It's for the deaf.

-The terms can be very complicated

-in Welsh and English...

-to sign language!

-You have been learning for years.

-passed my exams...

-But what happens when the bell tolls

-for the final time at these schools?

-Heledd Gwyndaf visited a community

-in Pembrokeshire to discover more.

-in Newport, Pembrokeshire.

-The Dinas Cross school has been

-transformed into Bara Brith.

-Elin Jones from Barry

-has fulfilled a dream...

-..and gone back to her first love.

-I finished school

-and went to college to study food.

-This was followed by three years

-at a restaurant in France.

-I got a totally different job

-when we moved back.

-We moved here 14 years ago and

-I worked for the RNLI until October.

-I put a plan together and

-now find myself in the old school.

-The village lacked a cafe

-or somewhere to meet for coffee.

-The hall had been renovated and

-the criteria called for more usage.

-I put together an idea

-and presented it to the trustees.

-The Bara Brith Cafe isn't the only

-thing in the building.

-The hall welcomes

-up to ten clubs a week...

-..including yoga groups,

-Merched y Wawr, the WI and a choir.

-We make fresh cakes every day...

-..and there's a choice of pate

-or fresh sandwiches or baguettes.

-It changes daily so when it's gone,

-it's gone and I don't make in bulk.

-We have quiche and frittata.

-Today, we had crab and a Cajun

-chicken wrap that was made at home.

-It's all gone today so we'll make

-something from fresh for tomorrow.

-Was it a difficult decision

-to leave a secure job and do this?

-Yes, but I'd just turned 50

-and had to use this time and gamble!

-This venture showcases the work

-of local artists such as Len.

-I'm 90 so there isn't a lot of work

-for me to do now.

-These are small pieces of porcelain.

-It's lovely

-and can be very expensive...

-..but I don't charge a lot

-so they are a bargain price!

-It's a busy summer

-but why is it so popular?

-There's a great variety of unusual

-but delicious dishes.

-I often come here with my family...

-..but also with my friends to enjoy

-a relaxed coffee in the local area.

-It's a great place to socialize

-and important for the elderly...

-..who come here two or three times

-a week for a cuppa.

-This is ideal for people to meet

-and put the world to rights...

-..and the coffee is great too!

-It was lovely to see those cakes.

-Our summer photography competition

-always proves to be a massive hit.
