I'm Ricky. I live in Bristol.

0:00:020:00:05

By day, I work as an animator, which is lucky,

0:00:050:00:08

cos I love art.

0:00:080:00:10

I live for art.

0:00:100:00:11

I even dream of art.

0:00:110:00:13

I draw...

0:00:130:00:14

..I paint...

0:00:150:00:16

..I make things.

0:00:180:00:19

I hang out with my mates, Gavin, Michelle and Sarah.

0:00:200:00:25

Argh...!

0:00:250:00:26

Most importantly, I make ninja moves.

0:00:260:00:28

Some people call me the...

0:00:280:00:30

..Art Ninja!

0:00:310:00:33

Today, I'll show you how to make a nose-shaped tissue dispenser

0:00:340:00:38

that'll blow your socks off.

0:00:380:00:40

My dad helps me with an eye-popping drawing,

0:00:400:00:43

plus it all gets a bit spooky when I do some underground art.

0:00:430:00:47

Because today, it's...

0:00:480:00:50

ALARM BEEPS

0:00:540:00:56

Achoo!

0:00:590:01:01

It's a new day.

0:01:010:01:02

Time to get my ninja on.

0:01:020:01:04

And my clothes.

0:01:060:01:07

But today, I might need to pull a sickie.

0:01:300:01:33

I feel so sketchy.

0:01:330:01:34

Achoo!

0:01:340:01:36

Oh, but I can't be ill.

0:01:360:01:37

I've got to meet my friend Michael later

0:01:370:01:39

to do some fluorescent art with lights.

0:01:390:01:42

PHONE RINGS

0:01:420:01:44

'Hi, it's Mum!

0:01:460:01:47

'Hope you're OK. You're often sick at this time of year.'

0:01:470:01:49

She's not wrong.

0:01:490:01:51

And by sick, she doesn't mean good.

0:01:510:01:53

Mum's cool, but she's not that cool.

0:01:530:01:56

-Hi, Ricky!

-Hi, Dad.

0:01:560:01:58

-Mum's really worried about you.

-I know. She's still on the phone.

0:01:580:02:02

RICKY'S MUM BABBLES ON THE PHONE

0:02:020:02:04

She sent me round with a hot-water bottle.

0:02:050:02:07

And I've got some tissues for you as well.

0:02:070:02:09

Whoa, keep your distance! I don't want you to catch my cold.

0:02:090:02:12

-Can you throw me a tissue?

-Sure.

0:02:120:02:14

-Oh, can't open them! Can you help me, please?

-Yeah, sure.

0:02:140:02:17

Achoo!

0:02:170:02:19

Achoo!

0:02:230:02:24

You're going to have to stay in quarantine now.

0:02:260:02:29

Well, you might as well put the kettle on.

0:02:320:02:34

Blowing your nose...

0:02:370:02:39

SNOT fun, is it? And I've got some art that can help you with that.

0:02:400:02:44

The Art Ninja nose-shaped tissue dispenser!

0:02:450:02:48

It's great and I'm SNOT kidding!

0:02:480:02:50

I've got a big piece of cardboard

0:02:510:02:53

and I'm going to draw around a tissue box.

0:02:530:02:55

I'm going to roll it up onto its end towards me.

0:02:580:03:02

Now, I'm going to draw around the edges of three sides.

0:03:020:03:05

And then, on the edges here,

0:03:070:03:09

I'm going to draw the profile of a nose, nice and big.

0:03:090:03:13

It's important to make these match. So, once you've cut it out,

0:03:180:03:21

you can fold it in half and make sure they're symmetrical.

0:03:210:03:23

Then, I'm going to draw around my box here

0:03:230:03:26

and make a strip of card

0:03:260:03:27

one-and-a-half times the length of the tissue box.

0:03:270:03:30

There! Looks about half again.

0:03:300:03:32

Now I'm going to cut them out.

0:03:330:03:35

Snippy-snippy...

0:03:370:03:38

Now you need to score along these lines

0:03:390:03:41

and I'm going to use a ruler for that.

0:03:410:03:42

It's a bit safer than using scissors.

0:03:420:03:44

I'm scoring so I can fold these parts of cardboard back more easily.

0:03:440:03:48

Turn it over.

0:03:480:03:49

Just see if the tissue box fits inside.

0:03:490:03:51

There we go, perfect!

0:03:530:03:54

It needs to have a little bit of wiggle room so you can take it out.

0:03:540:03:58

Now, this strip is going to be the bridge of the nose

0:03:590:04:02

and the underside here.

0:04:020:04:04

And what have you got here?

0:04:040:04:05

Nostrils.

0:04:050:04:06

So, we need to cut some holes in this strip, just a couple of ovals.

0:04:060:04:09

And if you've got square nostrils, by all means, draw square ones.

0:04:130:04:16

Or even triangular.

0:04:180:04:19

Now I'm going to put a bit of clay behind them.

0:04:190:04:22

Use a pencil to make a hole, so I can get my scissors in there.

0:04:220:04:24

Now I can start taping it together.

0:04:280:04:30

That's just going to hold it together while we put the bridge on.

0:04:350:04:39

OK, it's shaping up pretty well.

0:04:450:04:47

Now I'm going to stick some balls of newspaper on either side,

0:04:470:04:50

so it looks more like a nose.

0:04:500:04:52

There we go...

0:04:530:04:54

Right.

0:04:590:05:00

I'm going to cover it in a couple of layers of paper-mache,

0:05:000:05:03

so I've got a bowl of PVA glue and water mix,

0:05:030:05:06

two parts glue, one part water

0:05:060:05:08

and a nice pile of newspaper.

0:05:080:05:10

Paper-macheing, quite messy.

0:05:190:05:21

So, you should put some extra newspaper down first.

0:05:210:05:23

OK, good. Looking nice and covered.

0:05:300:05:32

Now, if you're doing this at home,

0:05:320:05:34

you'll need to wait for it to dry.

0:05:340:05:35

But I'm going to use my ninja skills.

0:05:350:05:37

Great, paper-mache's dry, nice and hard.

0:05:390:05:42

Now I'm going to do my nose, so I have the right colour paint here.

0:05:420:05:46

Mix up some colours to get the skin tone right for you.

0:05:460:05:48

Great, that's all covered.

0:06:030:06:05

Now you'll need to wait for yours to dry.

0:06:050:06:07

But I wait for nothing, I'm the Art Ninja!

0:06:070:06:10

Oh, look at that!

0:06:110:06:12

Took so long to dry, it's grown a moustache.

0:06:120:06:15

I've also added some detail here,

0:06:150:06:17

just to accentuate the nostrils.

0:06:170:06:18

And I've pierced the hole in the back

0:06:180:06:21

and put a bit of string to hang it up.

0:06:210:06:23

Now let's slide in our tissues...

0:06:230:06:25

SNEEZY does it.

0:06:260:06:28

Oh, yeah!

0:06:290:06:30

SNOT bad, that.

0:06:350:06:36

Ha-ha! Said "snot" again.

0:06:360:06:38

Achoo!

0:06:380:06:39

The nose-shaped tissue dispenser.

0:06:500:06:52

Have a blow at it today. I mean, go.

0:06:520:06:54

Achoo!

0:07:000:07:01

-Dad, you put the kettle on yet?

-No, I'm disinfecting.

0:07:020:07:05

-I hope you're wearing gloves, that's some strong stuff.

-Of course.

0:07:050:07:08

I've got your lilac gloves with floral cuffs.

0:07:080:07:11

They're not mine. Someone must have left them here.

0:07:110:07:15

I'm pretty sure that picture moves on its own.

0:07:200:07:22

It's almost as if...it's animated.

0:07:220:07:25

Oh, no...! Should I call an ambulance?

0:07:250:07:28

No, it's just an animation. A crumby one!

0:07:280:07:31

And you can make an awesome dunk stunt

0:07:310:07:33

with a pack of yummy biscuits, a cup of tea, some bendy wire,

0:07:330:07:37

some strong sticky tape and a camera.

0:07:370:07:39

And you can put it together in just three ninja moves.

0:07:390:07:43

Ninja move number one...

0:07:430:07:44

You need to set up your scene.

0:07:440:07:46

Now, I'm using this coffee table as my backdrop.

0:07:460:07:49

I've got myself a cold cup of tea here, ready to go.

0:07:490:07:51

And now I can start doing my animation.

0:07:510:07:53

So, I need to take a shot each time

0:07:530:07:54

my biscuit climbs up to the top

0:07:540:07:56

to jump off and do its death-defying stunt.

0:07:560:07:59

I need to make sure that these biscuits here

0:07:590:08:01

react when he's getting ready to jump,

0:08:010:08:03

because there's quite a lot of suspense in this.

0:08:030:08:05

So, every time I move the pink biscuit a tiny amount,

0:08:070:08:10

I take a photo and then, when I edit all the photos together,

0:08:100:08:13

it'll make it seem like they've moved.

0:08:130:08:15

Obviously, I have to eat a few wafers as I go. It's only fair!

0:08:150:08:19

Ninja move number two...

0:08:200:08:22

It's time for the death-defying stunt,

0:08:220:08:24

so I need to attach some wire to the back of my biscuit.

0:08:240:08:26

And I'm using some sticky tack, along with some strong black tape.

0:08:260:08:30

And then, I need to attach the other part of the wire

0:08:300:08:32

to this tin up here.

0:08:320:08:34

And I'm going to conceal where it's actually attaching to it.

0:08:340:08:37

Get him into position.

0:08:370:08:38

And then I'm going to move the camera

0:08:380:08:40

so I can hide where it's attached to the back of the biscuit.

0:08:400:08:43

There we go, sneaky-sneaky.

0:08:430:08:45

Now, I've hidden where it attaches to it.

0:08:450:08:47

It means it's easier to paint it out.

0:08:470:08:48

So, take a couple of shots.

0:08:480:08:50

Now I'm going to take this out of the way

0:08:500:08:51

and I'm going to shoot a clean picture

0:08:510:08:53

without the biscuit or the wire in it.

0:08:530:08:55

And this is known as a plate.

0:08:550:08:56

It means that I can paint out the wire afterwards

0:08:560:08:59

and make it look like the biscuit's really doing a stunt.

0:08:590:09:02

It's always good to get a mate to help out.

0:09:020:09:04

This is my mate, Rich.

0:09:040:09:06

Ninja move number three...

0:09:080:09:10

Compile your frames in an animation app.

0:09:100:09:13

There's loads of free editing apps, like the one I'm using,

0:09:130:09:16

available online for your PC or tablet.

0:09:160:09:18

Now, I've painted out all the wire, I've added some sound effects,

0:09:190:09:23

and I think it's time to take a look at the finished piece.

0:09:230:09:25

CRUMB roll, please...

0:09:250:09:27

Oh?

0:09:310:09:32

Ah-ha...!

0:09:320:09:34

Oh?

0:09:340:09:36

Ah...!

0:09:360:09:37

Urgh!

0:09:370:09:38

DRUM ROLL

0:09:380:09:39

Yippee...!

0:09:390:09:42

Urgh!

0:09:420:09:43

Oh...

0:09:430:09:44

Argh!

0:09:460:09:48

MUNCHING

0:09:480:09:49

Argh...!

0:09:500:09:52

Oh, yeah.

0:09:520:09:53

It looks well good. Looks just like he's doing a stunt dive.

0:09:530:09:56

I think it looks so good, I'm going to make another one.

0:09:560:09:59

Oh...!

0:10:000:10:02

They're all gone.

0:10:020:10:03

PHONE RINGS

0:10:060:10:08

'Hi, Ricky! It's Mum!'

0:10:120:10:14

It's your mum!

0:10:140:10:16

-I know.

-'Your dad must still be there.

0:10:160:10:19

'I hope he's not caught your cold.

0:10:190:10:20

'Ah-ah-achoo!

0:10:200:10:22

'Oh, seems like I've caught it, too.'

0:10:220:10:24

Wow. That fibre-optic phone line really is powerful.

0:10:240:10:28

'Anyway, if your dad is there,

0:10:280:10:30

'you can tell him that all this is still to come....

0:10:300:10:32

'Optical illusions may lead to confusion

0:10:320:10:34

'when you add to your body of work,

0:10:340:10:36

'you book in some painting with a library card

0:10:360:10:38

'and make some truly underground art that is a real highlight.

0:10:380:10:42

'Ricky, get well soon and send Dad home soon.

0:10:420:10:45

'Please, don't involve him in your Art Ninja nonsense. Bye!'

0:10:450:10:49

Of course not, Mum.

0:10:490:10:50

-Hey, Dad, can you help me with something?

-Yeah, love to.

0:10:500:10:53

I've got a germ of an idea.

0:10:530:10:56

-Achoo!

-Urgh!

0:10:560:10:57

Sorry. I'm going to need some felt-tip pens for this.

0:10:570:10:59

Let's just check if these ones are all working.

0:10:590:11:02

Draw a line there.

0:11:020:11:03

That's nice. Nice orange one.

0:11:040:11:06

Yeah, going all right.

0:11:080:11:10

Yeah, going strongly. Great.

0:11:100:11:12

Dad, can you draw around me with this pencil?

0:11:120:11:14

I'd love to.

0:11:140:11:15

On this massive piece of paper?

0:11:150:11:17

-Yeah, go on, then.

-Cool.

0:11:170:11:18

If you can take the end of that...

0:11:180:11:20

Right, going to lay down.

0:11:230:11:25

Start drawing around me, then.

0:11:260:11:27

This is the kind of art I like.

0:11:300:11:32

I'm feeling a bit poorly today, so it's good to lay down.

0:11:320:11:35

That tickles!

0:11:360:11:37

Tickles!

0:11:370:11:38

Nearly there.

0:11:390:11:40

This is weird. This is weird.

0:11:420:11:43

Weird.

0:11:450:11:46

-All done.

-Great.

0:11:470:11:48

Oh, yeah.

0:11:490:11:50

You can't see it properly yet, but now...

0:11:500:11:53

I want to do some freaky art, inspired by artist Bridget Riley.

0:11:530:11:57

She was famous for pictures like this. It's called op art.

0:11:570:12:00

Op for optical illusion.

0:12:000:12:02

I hope you're not copying me, Ricky!

0:12:020:12:04

In the '60s, people copied me in both art and fashion

0:12:040:12:07

and I got very angry.

0:12:070:12:09

It's all right, Bridget. Imitation is the highest form of flattery.

0:12:090:12:12

So, I'm drawing a nice line across here.

0:12:140:12:16

Why are you doing this?

0:12:180:12:19

I want to turn this 2D image of me into a 3D piece of op art.

0:12:190:12:23

So, at the moment, drawing lines across,

0:12:230:12:26

keeping them pretty much parallel to each other.

0:12:260:12:28

And then, when I hit one of the lines here from our drawing,

0:12:280:12:30

I'm going to raise it up,

0:12:300:12:32

to try and make it look like it's raised up off the paper.

0:12:320:12:34

I see what you're doing now.

0:12:340:12:36

Now I... Pay close attention, Dad!

0:12:370:12:39

-Cos in a minute, you're going to have to help me.

-OK.

0:12:390:12:42

I've hit the pencil line, so I can do a bump.

0:12:430:12:45

Tell me when I can start, then.

0:12:450:12:47

Be patient, I'm nearly there.

0:12:470:12:49

We're trying to get it on, so we can both do it at the same time.

0:12:510:12:54

In Bridget Riley's abstract work,

0:12:570:13:00

she liked to use strips of high-contrasting colour.

0:13:000:13:02

-So, why don't you get started on the next one?

-OK.

0:13:020:13:05

Now, we're going to put two new lines in between here.

0:13:050:13:07

So, when you draw your red line,

0:13:070:13:09

-make sure you leave room for the last colour.

-OK.

0:13:090:13:11

And do straight along.

0:13:110:13:13

-Try and keep it as parallel to my lines as possible.

-Yes.

0:13:130:13:15

And then, when you hit the line you drew around me,

0:13:150:13:18

just raise it up, like this

0:13:180:13:20

and make it look like it's 3D.

0:13:200:13:21

-OK.

-Don't let me down.

0:13:210:13:23

I wouldn't dare.

0:13:230:13:24

Lots of people say that Bridget Riley's work

0:13:260:13:29

made them feel a little bit sick.

0:13:290:13:30

But, seeing as I'm already feeling poorly,

0:13:300:13:32

I think it's fine if I'm doing it.

0:13:320:13:34

Right, I might start doing the red from down here, too.

0:13:360:13:40

-I'll meet you in the middle.

-OK, sounds good to me.

0:13:400:13:42

If you were going to have a go at this at home,

0:13:490:13:51

I'd recommend starting with something small.

0:13:510:13:53

But, if you've got friends and family around to help you out,

0:13:530:13:56

go big.

0:13:560:13:57

Your outline drawing makes you look like a fine figure of a man.

0:13:570:14:01

All right, Bridget. Making me blush!

0:14:010:14:04

Oh, no, just running a fever...

0:14:040:14:06

And now, let's run the footage more quickly.

0:14:080:14:11

Is it making you feel a bit weird?

0:14:120:14:14

It's making my eyes go a bit funny.

0:14:140:14:16

Yeah...! Nice.

0:14:190:14:22

-Do you mind holding it up for me?

-Yeah, sure.

0:14:230:14:26

Oh, wow! That looks amazing!

0:14:270:14:29

-Yeah!

-Oooh...!

0:14:300:14:31

An optical illusion picture!

0:14:380:14:39

Try one yourself.

0:14:390:14:40

It's Bridget-Riley-good!

0:14:400:14:42

Oh, we're feeling a little better.

0:14:490:14:51

-Nearly ready to face the world.

-Ricky!

0:14:510:14:53

Ricky! Ricky!

0:14:530:14:55

I said nearly ready.

0:14:550:14:57

What do you guys want?

0:14:570:14:58

What can you make with shaving foam?

0:14:580:15:01

Shaving foam? I think I'll SHAVE that for another day.

0:15:010:15:04

Oh...!

0:15:040:15:05

Ricky, what can you make with a feather duster?

0:15:050:15:09

A feather duster? Although that TICKLES me, not right now.

0:15:090:15:12

Oh...!

0:15:120:15:14

Ricky, what can you make with these?

0:15:140:15:17

I pick you.

0:15:170:15:18

Yay...!

0:15:180:15:21

So, what are your names?

0:15:210:15:23

Hi, I'm Amelia.

0:15:230:15:24

-I'm Tamia.

-And I'm Jaya.

0:15:240:15:26

And where are you guys from?

0:15:260:15:28

We're from Manchester.

0:15:280:15:29

Awesome!

0:15:290:15:30

I love Manchester. So, what have you guys got for me today?

0:15:300:15:33

Can you make something out of old library cards?

0:15:330:15:37

Library cards?

0:15:370:15:39

I've got an idea that will get you guys shouting.

0:15:390:15:42

Not in a library, though. You've got to be quiet there.

0:15:420:15:44

Let me just grab my stuff...

0:15:440:15:46

I'm back.

0:15:470:15:48

I've got some paper, some paint, got a tissue.

0:15:480:15:52

I need that for cleaning up.

0:15:520:15:53

And my old library card.

0:15:530:15:55

I'm going to use my library card to make a cityscape,

0:15:550:15:58

by scraping paint along the paper.

0:15:580:16:00

Need quite a lot of it on there.

0:16:020:16:04

What's your favourite city?

0:16:050:16:07

Manchester!

0:16:070:16:09

Obviously.

0:16:090:16:10

Have thin and thick buildings.

0:16:100:16:12

So, I'm just scraping the paint along, using the edge of the card.

0:16:130:16:17

Obviously, when you do it, you can do any skyline you want.

0:16:170:16:20

I'm just going to keep topping up paint on the card

0:16:200:16:23

and turning it round to make sure I spread out the paint equally.

0:16:230:16:26

OK, I've got the silhouette of my cityscape done.

0:16:260:16:30

-Do you want to see how I'm getting on?

-Yes, please!

0:16:300:16:32

-Wow...!

-Think it's looking good?

0:16:330:16:35

-It looks cool.

-You ain't seen nothing yet.

0:16:350:16:38

Let's put some lights on, by using a little bit of white and yellow.

0:16:380:16:42

I've also got some red and blue.

0:16:420:16:43

I'm going to use the corner, rather than the whole thing.

0:16:430:16:46

Now, I'm just doing quick dashes with it.

0:16:480:16:51

Do some strips there.

0:16:520:16:53

This picture's shaping up to be a kind of New York skyline.

0:16:530:16:56

Lots of lights on.

0:16:570:16:58

It's not very good for their energy bill.

0:16:590:17:01

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with that. Going to add a little bit of yellow.

0:17:020:17:05

Just do some dashes here and there.

0:17:080:17:10

Going to put some red in there now, as well.

0:17:110:17:13

Just putting little injections of colour where there's a lot of black.

0:17:140:17:18

Let's go for some blue.

0:17:180:17:20

You can use any colour you like.

0:17:200:17:22

Right, I think my picture's coming together now.

0:17:250:17:27

Maybe this city's on, like, a river.

0:17:270:17:29

A little shimmer down, like that.

0:17:300:17:32

All the lights are reflecting in the water.

0:17:320:17:34

Right, I think I'm there.

0:17:370:17:39

Do you guys want to have a look?

0:17:390:17:41

Yes!

0:17:410:17:42

Time for the reveal...

0:17:420:17:43

'I can't wait to see your cityscape.'

0:17:430:17:46

Wow...!

0:17:460:17:47

What would you guys give it out of ten?

0:17:470:17:49

Definitely 33!

0:17:490:17:52

33? That's amazing!

0:17:520:17:54

Do you know what?

0:17:540:17:55

That's made me feel so much better, I think my cold's gone away.

0:17:550:17:58

I'm really happy with my library card cityscape.

0:17:580:18:02

Thanks, Amelia. Thanks, Tamia. Thanks, Jaya. Goodbye!

0:18:030:18:05

Bye! Thank you!

0:18:050:18:07

Wow! That's one pretty city!

0:18:120:18:14

See if you can do the same with an old library card.

0:18:140:18:17

Here's a quick art tip.

0:18:200:18:21

My nose feels too big with this cold,

0:18:210:18:23

so I'm going to show you how to proportion a cartoon body.

0:18:230:18:26

So, start by drawing four lines, equal distance apart.

0:18:260:18:29

And these are going to be guides.

0:18:310:18:33

Just done them in pencil. Grab a pen...

0:18:330:18:35

In the top one, I'm going to draw the head.

0:18:350:18:37

Cartoon characters have big heads

0:18:370:18:39

and this means that you can draw the body and the leg section

0:18:390:18:42

the same size as the head.

0:18:420:18:44

So, in total, your character will be three heads high.

0:18:440:18:47

Just draw some glasses on.

0:18:470:18:49

In the second area, I'm going to draw the body.

0:18:530:18:56

I'm going to make sure the arms are roughly the same length as the body.

0:18:560:19:00

Now, the legs...

0:19:070:19:08

And then, I'm going to draw the knees,

0:19:150:19:16

just halfway between the feet and the hips.

0:19:160:19:18

And in a few simple steps, my cartoon character is in proportion.

0:19:180:19:22

There's a quick art tip.

0:19:240:19:25

Why don't you add this to your body of work?

0:19:290:19:31

Hey, you there!

0:19:360:19:38

This guy's always on telly.

0:19:380:19:40

He thinks he's got the world in the palm of his hand.

0:19:400:19:42

Here's something you'll just have to own.

0:19:420:19:45

A unique piece of art.

0:19:450:19:47

It's a picture of your fingerprint!

0:19:470:19:51

I was right about the hand.

0:19:510:19:52

And worry not, although it's a massive fingerprint,

0:19:520:19:56

you won't need a big hand.

0:19:560:19:57

Here's how you make it...

0:19:570:19:59

You'll need a tray, some paper and an inkpad.

0:20:000:20:05

Now you need to make a fingerprint.

0:20:060:20:08

With a photocopier or computer,

0:20:130:20:16

enlarge to make the fingerprint fill an A4 page.

0:20:160:20:19

Gigantic!

0:20:210:20:22

Next, you'll need some PVA glue, with a nozzle, preferably.

0:20:230:20:27

You must apply the glue to the print.

0:20:280:20:31

Ensure you follow the lines of the fingerprint very carefully,

0:20:310:20:35

to make sure they are all covered.

0:20:350:20:37

The glue application may take some time.

0:20:380:20:41

Phew!

0:20:410:20:42

Grab some glitter and sprinkle liberally over the glued lines.

0:20:450:20:49

Once your print is covered with glitter,

0:20:520:20:54

shake off the excess glitter onto the tray.

0:20:540:20:58

Mesmerising!

0:20:580:20:59

Shaky-shaky!

0:21:000:21:01

Finally, get a frame and attach it to your fingerprint picture.

0:21:030:21:08

Perfect!

0:21:100:21:11

The fingerprint picture!

0:21:130:21:15

Available on a hand near you!

0:21:150:21:18

Wow! Have to get my hands on one of those.

0:21:210:21:24

Bye!

0:21:270:21:29

Oh, hey, Dad. I didn't realise you were still here.

0:21:290:21:31

That was your mate Michael just called.

0:21:310:21:33

Something about art with light...?

0:21:330:21:34

Oh, yeah, it's fine. I know all about that.

0:21:340:21:36

Oh, and it's in a cave.

0:21:360:21:37

A cave?

0:21:370:21:38

That's not good, if you've got a cold.

0:21:380:21:40

But you know what? I feel like I'm on the mend.

0:21:400:21:42

You've got a bit in YOUR cave...

0:21:420:21:44

Hey, I can do it myself! I'm a grown-up.

0:21:460:21:48

He may be a grown-up, but he's still my little Ricky.

0:21:480:21:52

I can hear you.

0:21:520:21:53

So embarrassing!

0:21:530:21:54

Ninja skills!

0:22:090:22:11

Do you know what? I'm not so sure about this cave thing.

0:22:110:22:14

I'm glad I brought my torch with me.

0:22:140:22:16

Whoa...! It's darker in here than I thought. And colder.

0:22:220:22:26

Achoo!

0:22:260:22:27

I thought I got rid of those.

0:22:270:22:30

Where's Michael?

0:22:300:22:31

Michael?

0:22:350:22:37

Michael!

0:22:370:22:39

I'm here to do some art with light!

0:22:390:22:41

Michael?

0:22:420:22:44

That was a good echo.

0:22:440:22:45

It was, wasn't it?

0:22:460:22:48

Wasn't it? Wasn't it? Wasn't it?

0:22:480:22:50

Wasn't it? Wasn't it?

0:22:500:22:52

I'm so scared right now...

0:22:540:22:56

And what's that over there?

0:22:570:22:59

Oh!

0:23:130:23:14

-Oh, Michael, you scared me out of my skin!

-Hey, Ricky.

0:23:140:23:17

You been crying?

0:23:170:23:18

No, no, no. I've just got a bit of a cold.

0:23:180:23:21

Well, let me show you something that'll send shivers down your spine.

0:23:210:23:24

Oh, wow!

0:23:250:23:27

Spooky!

0:23:270:23:28

That looks like a skeleton in this cave.

0:23:280:23:30

-I think we should go.

-Chill out, man.

0:23:310:23:33

It's just some light painting I've been doing.

0:23:330:23:35

Michael Bosanko is well-known for making art with light.

0:23:350:23:39

Here's some of his previous work...

0:23:390:23:41

-Do you want to help?

-Yeah.

0:23:410:23:42

We'd better get our ninja on!

0:23:420:23:44

Art Ninja!

0:23:510:23:52

Art Ninja?

0:23:520:23:54

Strike a pose.

0:23:540:23:55

OK, Michael, what is light painting?

0:23:590:24:01

Instead of using paint and brushes, we're using torches and light.

0:24:010:24:06

OK. But we don't have a canvas.

0:24:060:24:08

No. No, we don't.

0:24:080:24:09

We're going to use three-dimensional space.

0:24:090:24:11

So, how do we know we've made a picture?

0:24:110:24:13

We're going to use a camera

0:24:130:24:14

and any light we paint with is going to be captured on the sensor

0:24:140:24:17

at the back of the camera.

0:24:170:24:18

-So, we've got our lights...

-Yeah.

0:24:180:24:20

-We've got our camera...

-We have.

0:24:200:24:22

I guess it's time for action.

0:24:220:24:23

We're going to need total darkness, so turn the lights off.

0:24:250:24:29

Go!

0:24:290:24:30

Because it's so dark, we're going to use our thermal imaging camera,

0:24:300:24:33

so you can see from our body heat what we're doing.

0:24:330:24:36

We're going to be opening the exposure for a few minutes.

0:24:360:24:39

And then, when we're done, we'll close the exposure.

0:24:390:24:42

This is awesome! I'm drawing a picture in the air!

0:24:420:24:45

OK, I think I'm done.

0:24:460:24:47

OK. Lights on. Come and have a look at the result.

0:24:470:24:50

Ah, yeah! He came out really well.

0:24:500:24:53

I drew my glasses on and even though I was writing Art Ninja backwards,

0:24:530:24:57

it came out all right.

0:24:570:24:58

I think that, with your guidance,

0:24:580:25:00

we can do something bigger and better.

0:25:000:25:01

-OK, let's do it, yeah.

-Let's do it!

0:25:010:25:03

OK, Michael, if we're going bigger, is there anything else we need?

0:25:030:25:06

Yeah, we're going to need a lot more torches.

0:25:060:25:09

This is cool.

0:25:090:25:10

Yeah. I made this.

0:25:100:25:11

LED strips.

0:25:110:25:13

Lovely.

0:25:130:25:14

I'm going to just illuminate part of the background with this.

0:25:140:25:17

-Oh, wow!

-Nice?

-Love it!

0:25:190:25:21

Oh, yeah.

0:25:210:25:23

Place that somewhere on the floor in front of the camera, please.

0:25:230:25:27

-That's your position.

-Yep.

0:25:280:25:29

Let's do it.

0:25:290:25:31

Lights off?

0:25:310:25:32

Yes, please.

0:25:320:25:33

So, I guess this line of light you're tracing

0:25:350:25:37

is making a picture frame?

0:25:370:25:39

Indeed.

0:25:390:25:40

I've got a trick up my sleeve.

0:25:450:25:47

A secret weapon?

0:25:470:25:48

A secret ninja weapon.

0:25:480:25:50

So, what you up to there, then, Michael?

0:25:510:25:53

I'm drawing a skeleton.

0:25:530:25:55

Michael's secret weapon is gloves with lights on the fingertips.

0:25:550:25:58

He's using them to trace a skeleton in the air

0:25:580:26:02

and it's all going to be captured by his camera.

0:26:020:26:04

I'm going to use this red wire to create a texture along the ground.

0:26:040:26:08

It is a bit like painting with invisible ink, isn't it?

0:26:080:26:11

Yeah.

0:26:110:26:12

You have to try and remember where things go.

0:26:120:26:15

The final touch... I'm going to throw some light onto the rocks.

0:26:150:26:20

Oh, wow, that green background's rad!

0:26:200:26:23

I can't wait to see the finished picture.

0:26:230:26:25

And we're done.

0:26:250:26:26

Amazing.

0:26:260:26:27

So, I'm just going to turn the exposure off.

0:26:270:26:29

How's it looking?

0:26:290:26:31

Here we go...

0:26:310:26:32

Oh, wow!

0:26:340:26:36

A skeleton painting a picture of a skateboarder. It's truly rad!

0:26:370:26:40

Look at it, it's amazing!

0:26:450:26:47

And even the pillar's all lit up. It looks like he's standing right here.

0:26:470:26:51

Good work, Michael.

0:26:510:26:52

-Yeah, well done, Ricky. Excellent.

-Thanks, dude.

0:26:520:26:54

Well, that was a bit of LIGHT relief.

0:26:550:26:58

And my cold has completely disappeared.

0:26:580:27:00

Oh...

0:27:020:27:03

Michael's disappeared, too.

0:27:040:27:05

Michael?

0:27:070:27:08

Michael!

0:27:080:27:10

Ow! That was my foot, Ricky!

0:27:130:27:15

Sorry!

0:27:150:27:16

From lightsaber to screensaver, in just two clicks.

0:27:220:27:26

Today has taught me a valuable Art Ninja lesson.

0:27:260:27:30

If you make art in a cave, it can give you a fright.

0:27:300:27:33

But it's better with a friend and a handy torch light.

0:27:330:27:36

I'm so glad I got rid of that stinking cold.

0:27:370:27:40

I'm now ready for more Art Ninja adventures.

0:27:400:27:42

Fighting fit, in fact.

0:27:420:27:44

Achoo!

0:27:440:27:46

My cold's back!

0:27:460:27:47

Argh...!

0:27:470:27:50
