On today's show, we're going to have our minds read. I'm not. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
He's not getting through these. Yes, same. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
He'll never get through this. Doesn't matter. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
Anyway, nobody actually knows what you are thinking. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
The wee cup of tea that you were thinking about, Radzi. Oh, thanks. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
How did he know? | 0:00:18 | 0:00:19
CHEERING | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
Hello. How are you doing? | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
We're having a Bonfire Night party in the studio. I'm writing my name. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:45
You're doing a great job. Lindsey is back. Yay! | 0:00:45 | 0:00:49
I'm so happy to be back. I missed you two. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
We had a great time without you, to be honest. Hey! I'm only kidding. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:56
Stop it. We've got an amazing fireworks display | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
by the British champions, no less. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
I get involved setting up... well, an even more special display | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
which you'll see later on in the show. That is so cool. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
We're going to be catching up with our Autumnwatch buddies and they're | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
going to be telling us what's coming up later on Autumnwatch. Can't wait. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
It's also the next part in my gymnastics challenge | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
when I get to meet some inspired tumblers and get my fitness | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
put to the test. Make sure you're watching then. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
But, first, though, "Remember, remember, the 5th..." | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
Have you forgotten? Yeah. It's November. Ah! | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
Don't worry, Radz, fear not, because here to talk all things memory | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
and mind-reading is Colin Cloud. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
There he is. Hello, Colin. Welcome to the show. Please take a seat. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:40
Thank you very much, guys. So, Colin, life must be good. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
You're on your solo mind-reading tour. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
You're in The Illusionist on the London stage. I am. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
But, if you are really a mind-reader, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
what am I thinking right now? Right, it doesn't quite work like that. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
It's more about me getting people to give off information without them | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
being aware they're even doing it. Wow! | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
Now, this is quite strange to us because we normally have an earpiece | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
in our ears with the producers telling us what's coming up next. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
They've cut us off completely because you want us to not be able | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
to hear anything for what you're going to demonstrate. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
Yes, it's easier for me sometimes | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
to show you what it is I do than try to explain it. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
It's not psychic, it's very much a mix of mind magic | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
and brain science to get you to give this off. What I'd love you to do... | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
We'll do it quite quick, so I might not be accurate with all of you | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
but I'll be as quick as I can. Could you please think about... Don't say. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
..a celebrity that most people would know or a place in the world. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
Think about a memory, not anything you put out on social media, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
nothing you've written about anywhere. Something only I know? | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
Only you know, yes, and could you please for us, Lindsey, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
think about a thing you would love to do with Blue Peter. OK. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
That you haven't done yet, but say nothing out loud. OK. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
We'll start with you. Hold your hands out. Yeah. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
Face me and imagine there's a computer keyboard right here. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
Don't move your fingers, focus on just | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
the name of the celebrity, whoever it is in your mind. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
You've never told me who this person is. Never, no. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
Think about them right now. Focus on the last name. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
Imagine typing the first letter. Don't move your fingers. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
Imagine typing the second letter. Was that an R? The second name. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
Is it an R, the second letter? It's got an R in the last name. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
That's perfect. Go to near the end. It's quite a long... | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
Eight letters in the surname. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
What?! Yes. Yes. Surname. Was it Grimshaw? Oh-h! | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
It was. Hey! No! Behave yourself! | 0:03:17 | 0:03:23
It must be Nick Grimshaw, yes? | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
Oh, my goodness! Yes. How? That's so genuine because we had no idea | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
what you were going to do. Yes, he did. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
I'll tell you what, we'll try very quickly with yourself. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
You've got something in mind that you would love to do | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
with Blue Peter, yes? It's made up. Made up, perfect, so... | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
Put your hands up like this. Put your hands over my eyes. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
Lindsey, if there's any part... | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
You don't know this is coming up. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:48
Any part of what you're picturing in your mind, | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
could you imagine any part of it you could act out? | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
Act it out now. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
As quickly as you can without even thinking. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
Just imagine acting it out. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:58
And just say done when you've done that. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
I know I'm putting you on the spot. OK. Done. OK, put your hands down. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
So, OK, at this is good. I saw the end of that. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:06
You reacted like that kind of makes sense but not really | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
and you didn't stand up, you sat down, | 0:04:09 | 0:04:10
so you're now putting your hands here as well. What am I doing? | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
So your hands were out like this, something like this. Yes. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
And you sat forward, so this motion or movement involved and it's | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
something you want to do with Blue Peter, Blue Peter orientated. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
Is it parachuting? Yes. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
But you were thinking about someone specific as well. Stop it. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
Is that right? Yeah. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
Tell me, what's your favourite genre of movie? | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
What type of movies do you like to watch? I suppose... Beyonce. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:37
Shut up! I wrote this down earlier. You're kidding. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:41
You got me to write this. Parachute with Beyonce. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
And that's exactly what you are thinking? Yes. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
And you didn't tell me this. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:48
How did you know that? Do we have time to do one more thing | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
with Barney? Stop it. You've got a memory in mind, yes? | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
You guys all know each other incredibly well. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
You guys are going to interrogate Barney. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:57
They don't know this story. It happened before I met them. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
I'm going to ask you to keep saying the word yes. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
You guys are going to ask any questions. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
You just keep saying the word yes. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
Even if it's a lie, keep saying the word yes. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
So you guys just ask him a random question about the memory. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
So yes regardless of what they ask. Were you a child? Yes. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
Was it in the garden? No. Oh, sorry, yes. Good. It's hard, right? | 0:05:14 | 0:05:19
Keep saying yes. Was it a painful experience? Yes. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
Is it to do with some kind of sport or physical activity? Yes. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
One more question each. Good. Does it involve a bike? Yes. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
Interesting. One more question. Is your family involved? Yes. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
OK, so it's not family. But when you said bike, | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
you kind of looked down like it was a bike but not a bike exactly. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
Is that right? Something like a bike? | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
And I still saying yes? You can answer truthfully now. Yes. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
OK, so I might not get that right. Is there a friend? | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
She said family, but it's not family, it's just a friend. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
Yes, one person. Yes. Um... Focus on their name. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
You're thinking nickname. You bit your lip there. Get lost! | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
Focus on just the first letter of the name. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:58
Keep saying yes. Is it an A, the first letter an A? Yes. B? Yes. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:03
C? Yes. D? Yes. Oh, back up there, it's D. Is it D? | 0:06:03 | 0:06:09
It's not a bicycle, | 0:06:09 | 0:06:10
but it's some kind of little digger or some kind of thing | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
you're riding about and it's not David, it's a nickname. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:17
Duck. How close am I? That's as close as I'm going to get, | 0:06:17 | 0:06:21
but you guys did all the questioning so well done, you. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
My best meet at school was called Ducky and I was riding a trike. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:28
Oh, you said bike, you were so close. That's amazing. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
That's absolutely... | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
Colin, you are amazing and to prove how amazing you are, | 0:06:34 | 0:06:36
you are going to set Radzi a challenge today, aren't you? Yes. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
You think anyone can kind of improve their memory. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
Absolutely. So we're going to test that with Radzi now. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
You're going to go outside. We've got 20 items lined up. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
Look at Barney's face. Barney's in shock so I'll do this bit. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
We've got 20 items lined up. You're going to go and memorise them, Radz. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:52
And we're going to test you at the end of the show. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
You know Barney never gets speechless. Let's do it. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
Go and do your challenge. That was amazing. | 0:06:57 | 0:06:59
You should believe that you're able to do this, because if you | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
put stress on your brain, | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
it's going to clam up and this will not work. OK. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:06
You need to relax, that's so crucial here. And we will start. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:11
It's quite straightforward. Look at all these! | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
So the first object we have here is a crown. Yes. This is number one. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:19
Now, when you think one, one sounds like the word sun. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
One and sun, they sound similar. You with me? Yes. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
So now when you look up to the sky, you think one sun. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
You look up at the sky, instead of the sun, you now see a crown. OK. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:31
So if you can count to one, look at the sun, | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
you've now got crown stuck in your head. Yes, I do. Easy with one. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
What we're going to do is not just one object, | 0:07:36 | 0:07:38
we're going to do it with all of these objects. Hang on. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:43
Colin, how long do I have to remember these? You have ten minutes. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
That's not long at all. It really is not. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:48
Shall we get cracking? Let's go for it. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:50
Barney, Lindsey, it's over to you. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
We don't... We can't believe it. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
Anyway, while Radzi's out there training his brain, | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
we can talk to you about when he was training his body recently. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
He's got a gymnastic challenge and today he's got some expert help. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
Have a watch. I don't what to say. That was ridiculous, ridiculous. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
'I'm preparing for my latest big Blue Peter challenge | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
'to perform a floor routine here in Glasgow | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
'at the World Gymnastics Championships | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
'in front of 6,000 people.' | 0:08:15 | 0:08:17
You've genuinely got me excited. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:19
After being set my challenge by a British gymnastic superstar, I am now | 0:08:19 | 0:08:23
well into my training with my coach Rob Payne and he is pushing me hard. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:28
Good lad. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:29
He knows just how far I have to go before I'm ready for my performance | 0:08:29 | 0:08:34
and he wants me to understand too. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
So, to help me find out exactly how well I'm doing, | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
plus allow me to see just how I measure up against the guys | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
who will actually be competing in Glasgow, | 0:08:42 | 0:08:45
I've come to a very special place indeed. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
Welcome to the English Institute of Sport in Lilleshall. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:55
one of whom is this guy, | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
Kristian Thomas, holder of Olympic bronze and Commonwealth gold medals. | 0:08:57 | 0:09:02
He knows exactly what it takes to be an elite athlete. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
How difficult is the training? | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
To get to a level of being able to do 30 hours in the gym a week, | 0:09:08 | 0:09:12
it takes years and years and years of just gradual building up, | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
so it is a tough sport to do, however it's also such | 0:09:15 | 0:09:17
an enjoyable sport to do, doing things that nobody else can do. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
What makes up the perfect gymnast? | 0:09:20 | 0:09:23
I'd probably say that'd be strength, flexibility, balance and also power | 0:09:23 | 0:09:27
are probably the most important aspects to being a gymnast. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
It's unbelievable. Seeing Christian get put through his paces, | 0:09:30 | 0:09:34
makes me realise just how far I'm off his level. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:36
And suddenly my challenge feels very real indeed. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:41
Gymnastics is a sport that anyone can get involved in, | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
whatever your ability. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
But to see how I compare to the very best, | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
Christian's coach Rudi has lined up some tests for me. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
The first measures strength. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:55
Leg strength is really important for a gymnast, | 0:09:56 | 0:09:58
especially on a floor exercise. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
It enables them to put maximum power into the tumbles | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
so that they can fit in multiple twists and somersaults. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
To test my leg muscles, we're going to do a box jump. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
From a standing start, you jump as high as you can onto a box. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
And Christian is going to show me how it's done. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
Wow! | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20 | |
He's just jumped 135 centimetres from a standstill. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:25
That's like jumping over a horse! | 0:10:25 | 0:10:27
Oh, well done. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:33
I managed to jump 105 centimetres. So my training is paying off. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:37
But when it comes to Christian's level, | 0:10:37 | 0:10:39
well, you can see for yourself. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:41
But how does this strength test help me with the floor routine | 0:10:41 | 0:10:44
I have to perform in a few months' time? | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
The height these guys tumble at | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
is because they can harness all the muscles at the right time, | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
at the right speed. And I think that this helps to create | 0:10:51 | 0:10:54
that kind of action on the tumbling floor. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:57
But there's something else Rudi has spotted. | 0:10:57 | 0:10:59
And it's about my confidence. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:01
You looked at it and thought, "It looks a bit high." | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
So challenge yourself, a bit more aggression | 0:11:03 | 0:11:05
and maybe you could be close to getting those toes on there. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:08
Thanks, Rudi. Now it's time for test number two - speed. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:12
So speed is really important, especially for the floor exercise. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:16
You need maximum amount of speed | 0:11:16 | 0:11:18
so that can then help us with the explosive tumbles. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:21
We're going to see how fast I can run over 20 metres, | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
compared to Christian. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:26
My best is a respectable 3.43 seconds. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:32
But Christian's explosive legs cover the distance in just 3.01 seconds. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:38
And in competition, he'd be expected to go under three seconds. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:42
So what I like to see for you to get improvement | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
is just to get those first couple of steps | 0:11:47 | 0:11:49
a little bit more dynamic, a little bit faster. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
So speed is vital for my routine. But we're not done yet. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:56
The last thing we need to look at is diet. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
Diet is really important to an elite-performing gymnast, | 0:11:59 | 0:12:02
because it helps the muscles recover when they're sore | 0:12:02 | 0:12:04
and it fuels the body for the day. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:06
And, as you might have guessed, | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
mine isn't quite as healthy as Christian's. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
So I start off with a bowl of one of my favourite cereals here, | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
which is chocolate covered. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:16
And then for a classic Radzi dinner, | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
I've got lasagne here with a little bit of salad, to be fair. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:22
So I have got some eggs, some chicken here. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:24
I've got lots of vegetables. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
Dinner, I'd have something like fish. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
How much of a difference would having a diet | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
much more like Christian's help me? | 0:12:32 | 0:12:33
Oh, it would definitely help your energy. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:35
It would help you train building up to that big day up in Glasgow. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
I'm sure, on the day, you want to perform to the best of your ability. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
Absolutely. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:42
And a very well-balanced diet will go a long way | 0:12:42 | 0:12:44
to help you achieving that. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
Loads of food for thought there. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:48
I've just got a few months to improve my strength, speed, confidence | 0:12:52 | 0:12:57
and diet if I'm to succeed at the World Championships. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
Will I be ready in time? | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
This is Radzi. Of course he'll be ready in time. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
His body's definitely ready. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:08
What about his brain, though? | 0:13:08 | 0:13:10
Well, he's working on that at the moment out the back with Colin. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
How far has he got? That's ten items. He's got ten more to go. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:15
Quite good. But he's got to learn all 20 of those. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
They're really random, as well. That's a hard live test. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
It's not long before he's back in here for us to put him to the test. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
So good luck, Radzi. Let's head this way. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:24
Because next week it is, of course, our Children In Need Spectacular. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:29
We're so excited about it and we want you to get involved, | 0:13:29 | 0:13:31
because it's Blue Peter. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
So we need you to make your mask and make your mark. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
You've been cutting and sticking and gluing and pasting | 0:13:36 | 0:13:38
and doing all those lovely things to be creative. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:40
Lewis from Aberdeenshire has sent this mask in. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
It's a multicoloured, technicolour sort of mask. I love it. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:45
And to raise money for Children In Need, | 0:13:45 | 0:13:47
he's going to be washing relatives' cars. That's good. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:50
I'm sure his relatives will appreciate that. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:52
This is from Poppy, who's ten. She's sent in this one. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:55
It's glittery. It's fabulous. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:57
It's even got little feathers that shimmer. | 0:13:57 | 0:14:00
And she is going to be dressing and doing a crazy little dance-off. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:03
Amazing. I like the sound of that, Poppy. I hope you win. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:06
Now, a lot of people say the country is a really big place. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:08
It's not. We've got the entire country in our studio here. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
As you can see, full of spots. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:12
And that's because, when you send us one of your masks, | 0:14:12 | 0:14:15
we'll mark your spot with a dot. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:16
Now, we want this to be loads more spotty, don't we? | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
So that means we need loads more hero masks. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:22
Maybe you can do them at school, send them in with your class, | 0:14:22 | 0:14:24
but you haven't got long. You need to do it ASAP. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:26
You've got until Thursday, 12 November. So maybe do it right now. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:30
Well, wait until after the show. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:32
And then get them into the post. | 0:14:32 | 0:14:33
Send them to us, because we want to feature them on our show. Don't we? | 0:14:33 | 0:14:36
We do. Speaking of heroes, Radzi is mine. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
He's been working so, so hard on this gymnastics challenge. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:41
But you know what? Even from time to time, | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
Blue Peter presenters still need a bit of inspiration. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
My challenge to perform a floor routine | 0:14:46 | 0:14:49
at the World Gymnastic Championships in Glasgow is just weeks away. | 0:14:49 | 0:14:53
And I've been working really hard with my coach Rob | 0:14:53 | 0:14:55
to perfect my technique. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:57
Big effort in the warm-up. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
Keep nice and tight. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:02
But not only do I have to do a faultless routine, | 0:15:02 | 0:15:06
I have to do it in front of 6,000 people. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:09
So I need some advice on performing in front of large crowds. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:13
So who better to speak to than Blue Peter legend Matt Baker | 0:15:13 | 0:15:17
and gymnastics legend Beth Tweddle? | 0:15:17 | 0:15:20
You probably recognise Matt from presenting The One Show. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:23
But when he was younger, as well as being a Blue Peter presenter, | 0:15:23 | 0:15:26
he was also a junior British gymnast. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:29
And as for Beth, well, she's only the most successful British athlete | 0:15:30 | 0:15:34
in the history of the sport, | 0:15:34 | 0:15:35
winning European, World and Olympic medals. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:37
I've just got to start by asking, | 0:15:39 | 0:15:40
what is it actually like to perform in front of thousands of people? | 0:15:40 | 0:15:44
Every gymnast gets nervous. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:46
We look quite controlled and composed but, actually, | 0:15:46 | 0:15:49
our stomachs are doing a hundred somersaults. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
But once you step off onto that podium, you'll love it. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:54
When I'm training, I get that feeling of, | 0:15:54 | 0:15:57
"I can't do it. I just can't do it." Believe in yourself. | 0:15:57 | 0:16:00
Think about where you've come from and look at that progression | 0:16:00 | 0:16:02
and think, "You know what? | 0:16:02 | 0:16:04
"I've come this far. How far am I going to get in the next few weeks?" | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
Well, guys, genuinely, it's been an absolute pleasure. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
And I'll see you in Glasgow. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:11
Those guys are legends. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:15
But I want to learn more about how I can improve my performance, | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
so I've come to visit a very special project in London. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
The young people that come here specialise in acro tumble, | 0:16:22 | 0:16:26
a mixture of circus skills and gymnastics. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
The project is funded by Children In Need | 0:16:29 | 0:16:31
and it's a great way for young tumblers | 0:16:31 | 0:16:33
from the local area to meet up. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:35
What would you think if I were to do three moves and you were to judge me? | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
ALL: Yeah! | 0:16:40 | 0:16:41
Thank you very much. Please, be kind. | 0:16:41 | 0:16:44
First up, the pike headstand. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:46
I hope you're impressed. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:53
They seem to be. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:55
Next, it's time to show off my balance. | 0:16:56 | 0:16:58
This looks quite simple, but it's surprisingly difficult. | 0:16:58 | 0:17:02
And this is a move I've sort of invented, so I hope you like it. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:10
So, what did they think? | 0:17:17 | 0:17:19
You looked like a swan that was, like, floating on water. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:22
Your posture was, like, straight and you balanced really well. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:27
The descent was clunky. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:29
Impressed? Well, almost. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:33
Now it's time for them to show me what they can do. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:35
Cartwheels, balance and some epic towers. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:39
These guys love what they do. They really enjoy it. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:46
And that is what I'm going to remember when I do my performance. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:49
I've got to enjoy it. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:51
The opportunities the young people get from this project | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
wouldn't be possible without the support and funding | 0:17:54 | 0:17:57
from Children In Need. | 0:17:57 | 0:17:59
For those that come, it's an inspiring place. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01
Its main focus is to bring young people together in a positive way | 0:18:01 | 0:18:06
and stop any feelings of loneliness. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
I love coming to meet my friends. | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
It's given me confidence, as well. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:14
This is quite a busy area | 0:18:14 | 0:18:16
and it's good to be in a safe and secure place. | 0:18:16 | 0:18:19
Before, I used to be really quiet | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
and I used to not speak to anyone. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:23
And now I talk too much! | 0:18:23 | 0:18:24
It does change your lives. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
It's a very good opportunity for us. It's a good experience. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
And we all thoroughly enjoy it | 0:18:30 | 0:18:32
and we'd like it if you can keep it going. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
The performers here have made me realise how important places | 0:18:36 | 0:18:40
like this are and how money raised by Children in Need | 0:18:40 | 0:18:42
can make such a big difference to people's lives. | 0:18:42 | 0:18:46
And now our finale. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:48
The human pyramid. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:50
Guys, high five? | 0:18:50 | 0:18:51
ALL: No! | 0:18:51 | 0:18:52
It's so nice to see the difference your money makes. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:56
Thank you so much for getting involved. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:58
Don't forget to keep sending your hero masks in. You know the address. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:02
I want to say a personal thank you to Robert Payne as well. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:06
You are a diamond. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:08
Radzi might have the body but does he have the brain? | 0:19:08 | 0:19:11
Please welcome Colin and Radzi back to the studio. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:14
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:19:14 | 0:19:17
OK. So, you were set a challenge | 0:19:17 | 0:19:19
to improve Radzi's memory in just ten minutes, | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
and you have had to learn 20 items. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:25
You look confident? | 0:19:25 | 0:19:27
I don't know how I feel, because I have looked at 20 items. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:30
We will find out if I know then. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:32
We are going to use a top of the range deluxe number generator. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:36
It's a bowl with some ping-pong balls in. | 0:19:36 | 0:19:39
OK, the numbers, we're going to pick some out. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:44
You have to tell us what item corresponds to what number. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:47
Ready? Here we go. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:48
Your first number is 13. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
13 was a skirting board, | 0:19:51 | 0:19:54
and that has lots of sunglasses, | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
which look like they belong to Elton John, because they have petals | 0:19:57 | 0:20:00
on the outside of the frames. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:02
Sunglasses with stuff on the frames. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:05
Let's see if you're right. Lindsey? Yes! | 0:20:05 | 0:20:07
Well played. First one down. Next one. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:10
The next number is number seven. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:12
Seven, I look up to heaven and I see angels, and they are all... | 0:20:12 | 0:20:20
Now, what are they doing? | 0:20:20 | 0:20:22
They are... | 0:20:22 | 0:20:23
Um... | 0:20:23 | 0:20:24 | |
You said wearing. That's all I'm going to say. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:27
Yes. What are they wearing? | 0:20:27 | 0:20:30
40 seconds left, Radz. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:32
Can I come back to it? | 0:20:32 | 0:20:33
Yeah. Course you can. Go for another one. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:35
We are going for number five. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:37
Number five is jive, | 0:20:37 | 0:20:40
and what a dance, but little... | 0:20:40 | 0:20:44
I think... | 0:20:44 | 0:20:46
Oh, is it geese? | 0:20:46 | 0:20:48
Is it geese...? Let's have a look. Lindsey, are they geese? | 0:20:48 | 0:20:51
Oh! You can have that, you can have duck. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:54
Back to number seven. | 0:20:54 | 0:20:56
Seven is heaven. There are angels. They are up in the air. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
They are doing something very specific. Do they have a digger on? | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
No, they don't have a digger. They've... | 0:21:02 | 0:21:04
I think we have to go to Lindsey and see what it is. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:07
Can you show what it is? | 0:21:07 | 0:21:09
It's a sombrero! Angels wearing sombreros. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
He even tried it on backstage. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:15
But that isn't bad, to have that amount of time. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:17
And the fact that he's got them in order, | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
not just remembering what is there | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
but the actual numbers they correspond with. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:24
If I knew you were going to score, I would have done so much better! | 0:21:24 | 0:21:28
Colin, thank you so much for being here. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:31
Thank you very much for your time, guys. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:35
If you want to learn some mind tricks or test your own brain power, | 0:21:35 | 0:21:38
check out the Blue Peter website. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
You can find the link on there. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:42
You get some top tips as well from Colin himself. Absolutely. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:45
Thanks again, guys. Brilliant. Lindsey. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:48
That was amazing. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:50
Speaking of memorable experiences, | 0:21:50 | 0:21:52
there's been loads this week on Autumnwatch. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:56
So, we thought, you know what? It's time to go green! | 0:21:56 | 0:21:59
Hopefully! There it is. | 0:21:59 | 0:22:03
So, it's the last show tonight BBC Two, eight o'clock. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06
Now we can go over to find out how our guys are doing. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:09
Yes, they always look cosy. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:11
Good to see you. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:15
Let's start by talking about your highlights of the week, please. | 0:22:15 | 0:22:18
One of the highlights for me has been the spectacle | 0:22:20 | 0:22:23
of barnacle geese. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:25
That is what we came here for. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:27
The entire population of barnacle geese arrive here in autumn. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:32
This year, record numbers. 40,000. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:34
We've watched them as individuals as well. | 0:22:34 | 0:22:37
This particular one is auditioning for the circus. | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
I like a good conservation story. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:43
The dormouse is in decline over much of the UK | 0:22:43 | 0:22:47
because their woodland habitat is being fragmented. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:50
But we were working with the People's Trust for Endangered Species | 0:22:50 | 0:22:54
to look at a way that we might join that habitat back together. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:57
I don't want to give away the secret but I can tell you that it works. | 0:22:57 | 0:23:00
That's good news. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:02
My most exciting time has to be | 0:23:02 | 0:23:04
I went up to the tiny island of Rum off the west coast of Scotland | 0:23:04 | 0:23:08
to watch the magnificent deer rut. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:11
Though they've been studying these deer for years and years, | 0:23:11 | 0:23:14
they've got no idea what they did at night. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:16
So I used my thermal camera to investigate what they were | 0:23:16 | 0:23:20
doing during the night, and we discovered some brand-new science! | 0:23:20 | 0:23:24
It genuinely is fantastic. So cool. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:28
Barny mentioned it's the last show. What has it got in store for us? | 0:23:28 | 0:23:32
One amazing thing is about starlings. | 0:23:34 | 0:23:37
We wanted to show them doing the murmurations, | 0:23:37 | 0:23:40
when you get tens of thousands of them all flying around, | 0:23:40 | 0:23:43
but they didn't do it this year. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:45
But we noticed our starlings were doing something amazing. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:49
Normally, they just make a starling noise, but listen to this. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:53
BIRDSONG | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
That starling is mimicking an owl. | 0:23:56 | 0:23:58
That's a blackbird. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:01
And that one was mimicking a jackdaw, | 0:24:04 | 0:24:06
so they are not making starling noises, | 0:24:06 | 0:24:08
they are copying the other birds, which is really confusing. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:12
I love it! Cheeky old birds. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
We know there is something we need to remember tonight | 0:24:14 | 0:24:16
because it is Bonfire Night. | 0:24:16 | 0:24:18
Is there something we need to do with our pets? | 0:24:18 | 0:24:20
If you have cats or dogs or rabbits in your garden, | 0:24:22 | 0:24:26
from this point onwards, | 0:24:26 | 0:24:27
you really should be thinking about bringing them indoors. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:30
I've got a couple of dogs. Itchy and Scratchy are my poodles. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:32
They don't mind fireworks at all. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:34
We used to put them indoors, but we found that they weren't | 0:24:34 | 0:24:38
freaked out so we could take them into the garden and watch, | 0:24:38 | 0:24:41
but that's unusual. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:42
Most people's pets can get very upset, so please bring them in, | 0:24:42 | 0:24:45
and if you can, have someone with them all the time, because they | 0:24:45 | 0:24:48
don't like being left on their own. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
BARNEY: That's brilliant. | 0:24:51 | 0:24:52
MICHAELA: I have a Jack Russell called Toto. | 0:24:52 | 0:24:54
BARNEY: Sorry, that's me jumping in. It's hard with a two-second delay. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:58
But we have to move on to our amazing fireworks display. | 0:24:58 | 0:25:00
Have a great live show tonight, guys, and we'll see you soon. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
It is Bonfire Night. You've got to see this display of champions. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:09
Welcome to Victoria Park in Southport. | 0:25:10 | 0:25:12
It might not look like much | 0:25:12 | 0:25:14
but in a few hours' time, this place is going to explode into life. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:19
Literally. | 0:25:19 | 0:25:21
This is the setting for the British Musical Firework Championships. | 0:25:21 | 0:25:26
But these fireworks don't just have to look good. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:28
Each display is set to music, | 0:25:28 | 0:25:30
which means that the timing is absolutely crucial. | 0:25:30 | 0:25:34
And we have given one team taking part a very special challenge. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:37
All we need is a tune. | 0:25:37 | 0:25:39
I know. What better music to set fireworks to... | 0:25:39 | 0:25:42
Oh, sorry. And what better music to set fireworks to than this? | 0:25:42 | 0:25:46
THE BLUE PETER THEME TUNE PLAYS | 0:25:46 | 0:25:48
The Blue Peter theme tune! | 0:25:48 | 0:25:50
The person masterminding our firework theme tune challenge | 0:25:50 | 0:25:53
is Trevor, a former British champion, | 0:25:53 | 0:25:56
which means he can do this. | 0:25:56 | 0:25:59
Your job is to try to make these fireworks fire to music. | 0:26:06 | 0:26:10
How do you even start with that? We listen to the piece of music, | 0:26:10 | 0:26:14
and we look for symbol clashes or guitar riffs, | 0:26:14 | 0:26:16
and then we can put a firework in to match that. How do you time it? | 0:26:16 | 0:26:20
We can do it on a software package on the PC. | 0:26:20 | 0:26:23
Along the bottom, we have the music file | 0:26:23 | 0:26:26
and these white dots are where we have moved a firework into position. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:29
When it plays, | 0:26:29 | 0:26:30
it gives us a visual representation of exactly how the show will look. | 0:26:30 | 0:26:33
It takes the team a whole day to set up the display. | 0:26:33 | 0:26:37
So, it's all hands on deck. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:39
We need a stake in the ground here, well pushed in. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:41
He's well pushed in. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:43
Then we will have a couple of these, one each side, | 0:26:43 | 0:26:45
so these labels tell us where it sits in the field | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
and which pin in the rail for the firing system | 0:26:48 | 0:26:51
that it needs to go into so it ignites at the right time. | 0:26:51 | 0:26:53
These things at different angles, they will fan out for the chorus? | 0:26:53 | 0:26:57
Yes. And they'll get channelled into one system? | 0:26:57 | 0:27:00
Yeah. A master controller, if you like. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:03
I think we are done for now, | 0:27:03 | 0:27:05
so we just have to wait until it gets dark. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
I will go and find the master controller and press the red button! | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
Don't press it! I won't, I promise... | 0:27:11 | 0:27:14
EXPLOSION | 0:27:15 | 0:27:18
It's going to be awesome. | 0:27:18 | 0:27:19
Let's see what is happening on next week's show. | 0:27:19 | 0:27:22
Children in Need spectacular. | 0:27:22 | 0:27:24
We will be breaking the world record. | 0:27:24 | 0:27:25
Pudsey will be there, he's excited, that's why he is dancing. | 0:27:25 | 0:27:29
It's my gymnastics performance as well so make sure you are there. | 0:27:29 | 0:27:32
As well as that, the Vamps. Enjoy the fireworks. | 0:27:32 | 0:27:36
See you next week. | 0:27:36 | 0:27:37
Subtitles by Ericsson. | 0:27:42 | 0:27:45 |
