Coming up, there's a feathery feeling on Blue Peter this week. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
Keep watching to see some very cute owls. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
Barney's feeling explosive as he learns how to blow up buildings, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
safely of course. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:13
And singing sensation Tich is going to be here | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
performing for you. That's all on today's Blue Peter. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
CHEERING | 0:00:34 | 0:00:35
Hello! | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
Yes! Well, the clocks have gone forward, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
-which means you have even longer to play out after your tea. -Yes! | 0:00:39 | 0:00:43
And someone who's definitely got a spring in her step is Emily | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
who's made this fabulous 3D picture of flowers. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
-That is SO good. -In fact, we like it so much, | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
it's going to take pride of place right there. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
I love it, Emily, thank you very much for sending us that. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
-Now, Barney's not here today. -Aww! | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
-But don't worry, he's back next week! -Yeah! | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
-I miss Barney, actually. -I... Do! | 0:01:01 | 0:01:02
No, I've got to admit, I do a little bit | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
but don't worry, Radzi, we're about to see his little face. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
And that's because last week, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:08
Barney went to a block of flats just near the studios here | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
to find the answer to a very difficult question. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
And that is, how do you blow up a 13-storey, 9,000 tonne building | 0:01:13 | 0:01:18
without damaging the houses around it, that are just metres away? | 0:01:18 | 0:01:22
The answer is, not very easily! | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
The Falcon Court building in Manchester. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
9,000 tonnes of concrete. And it's 35 metres high. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
It really is a huge part of the skyline here. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
When the tower block was built 40 years ago, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
it was a modern and exciting place to live. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
But in 2014, it's past its best, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
so the local council has decided to demolish it | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
to make way for new, more modern homes. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
Yep, they're going to blow it up. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
But how do you demolish something so large | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
while protecting the houses that are just metres from the blast? | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
If you've every played with one of these, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
you'll know how just easy it is to make something fall over. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:06
Oops! Yeah. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
But if it goes THAT wrong, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:09
it could have disastrous consequences for the houses around it. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:14
Ah! That's better. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
So a successful demolition should fall neatly in on itself, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:21
like these Dundee tower blocks did back in 2011. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
But not all demolitions are executed as precisely as that. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
In 2009, the demolition of this Turkish factory | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
went dramatically wrong. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
Martin Smith is the man in charge of the safety | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
of the Falcon Court demolition. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:38
Do you like what I've done with the place? | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
I do, yeah, it's really good. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
it looks like we're in what used to be someone's home. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
It would. This would have been one person's flat | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
with a doorway just behind us here. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
You can see, we've started our pre-weakening process | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
to remove some of the structural elements of the building. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
The explosives do some of the work, but by pre-weakening it, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
that does the rest. | 0:02:58 | 0:02:59
The demolition team have drilled holes in the walls | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
that are supporting the weight of the building, to make it less stable. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
The team will then place explosives on three floors, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
blasting away walls that help keep the building standing. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
The idea being that, once they go, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
the already pre-weakened building should fall in on itself, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
leaving a neat pile of rubble. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
It's three weeks before demolition day | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
and the team are about to carry out a test blast on one piece of wall. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
I would love to see some explosives going in. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
Could you do that for us? | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
John is an expert in blasting big buildings. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
This is the explosive. It is filled with PETN, the white powder. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
What does PETN stand for? | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
Pentaerythritol tetranitrate. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
Did you write that down? | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
We are going to put one length of purple. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
We will make the weak spots and this is the just tool to take it out. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:51
All yours. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:52
By carrying out a test blast, John will be able to see | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
if his plans for the overall demolition are accurate. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
They look a bit like the pick and mix sweets at the cinema. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
But I wouldn't eat one of those, though. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:03
On the demolition day itself, | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
using too little explosive might not topple the tower block. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
Too much, and it might explode everywhere, | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
causing damage to the surrounding buildings. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
What do you want to see when we come back into the building? | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
We'll give it ten minutes after the explosive's gone off | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
to let the proverbial dust settle. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
But we expect to see a big bag of the concrete | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
and when we cut it open, | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
there'll be a big section of the wall missing | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
and the concrete that was there is sat in the bottom of the bag. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
It's time for us to leave and see if John has got his sums right. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:35
If you see anything in that period when I'm quiet | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
that may need to stop, shout, "Stop, Stop!" OK? | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
Are we all ready? Good to go? | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
Fire now. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:44
EXPLOSION | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
I wasn't expecting that! | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
That was louder than I expected. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:50
You didn't give me a warning about that one, did you? | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
After a few minutes, it's safe to go back in and have a look. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
That wall has effectively gone now, hasn't it, what was there before? | 0:04:56 | 0:05:00
So how do you know now how successful the blast was? | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
We'll cut open the geotextile | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05
and clip open the chain-link fence beneath and when the debris spills | 0:05:05 | 0:05:10
out, it will tell us the explosives have done the job as we wanted. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:15
Would you call that a successful test? | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
I would call that very successful. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
Three weeks on, it's demolition day. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
The finishing touches are being made to the building | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
while teams from the local council | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
are evacuating the homes of local residents. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
It's not because the building's going to fall on top of theirs, | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
it's just a precaution, | 0:05:34 | 0:05:35
to make sure they're safe and away from the blast | 0:05:35 | 0:05:37
but if that building falls down the way it should do, which it will, | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
it's just going to drop. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:41
At a safe distance away, there's an excited crowd watching | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
and I'm being allowed inside the exclusion zone. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
I'm actually getting really excited. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
Everything's moving pretty quickly now. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:51
I'm with Martin and John, ready for when they push the button | 0:05:51 | 0:05:54
to bring the block down. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
Century 9, receiving, over? | 0:05:56 | 0:05:58
'Loud and clear.' | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
And it's not just the homes we have to worry about. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
We've placed two cameras at the base of the building. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
Let's hope John's got this one right, or they might get crushed. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
Ten, nine, eight, | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
seven, six, five... | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
CROWD JOIN IN: Four, three, two, one! | 0:06:16 | 0:06:21
Fire now! | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
BOOM! | 0:06:23 | 0:06:26 | |
WHOOPING | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
Have you ever seen anything like that?! | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
Look at the dust cloud coming over here. Wow! That's incredible! | 0:06:39 | 0:06:44
Four years to build it. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:45
Four seconds to demolish it. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47

MUSIC: "Push The Button" by The Chemical Brothers | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
# Push the button! # | 0:06:54 | 0:06:56
That was brilliant! | 0:07:09 | 0:07:11
Here comes the dust. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:12
HE PURSES LIPS AND BLOWS | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
Oh, I'm so jealous! That looked like | 0:07:17 | 0:07:18
a really exciting day for Barney, the crew and the local community, | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
and if you saw one of cameras there on the day | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
that got covered in rubble, this is it. It survived. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
How good is that? Now follow me this way, it's the Big Badge Wall. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
As usual, it's covered in your brilliant post. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
Thanks very much for sending it in. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:34
I had to mention this from Clifton in Chesterfield. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:37
It's a book and it's got Blue Peter, it's got absolutely everything in it | 0:07:37 | 0:07:41
and even at the very back, there is a CBBC Quiz. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
-We've got to do that later. -We will do that later on! | 0:07:44 | 0:07:48
Nia is from Cardiff and we are all aboard the Blue Peter ship. Aye-aye! | 0:07:48 | 0:07:53
We love it. This is from Charlotte, she's ten and she's done us three | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
but Barney's got a little camera, and if you look carefully | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
on the top left, there's an owl. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
There's going to be more from those later. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
I like it. I love this from Ella. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:05
She has made all of the replicas of the Blue Peter badges. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
But we can't send Ella a Blue Peter badge. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
Why? because she didn't include her address! | 0:08:11 | 0:08:13
If you do send us post, make sure you include your address. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:16
Someone who did include their address was Daniel. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
This is brilliant. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:19
He's done a Blue Peter Bot, Barney's controlling the robot | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
there's a poem with it, it's brilliant, | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
and he got a silver badge for it | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
because it's your second piece of great work. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
And this is from Nicholas, who's 11. He's done an environmental picture. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
Again, as well as all the other animals, | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
there's another little owl. We like that very much. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
It's earned you a green badge. Well done. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40

# Blue Peter badge? | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
So you're saying there is more than blue, then, that me and you've got? | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
Yeah, there's... | 0:09:19 | 0:09:20
.. as well as the blue one. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
Wow. You must have worked really hard, especially for that gold one. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
Yeah! | 0:09:25 | 0:09:26 | |
Er, no, I just borrowed 'em. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28

# This is the one that you've probably all seen before, right? | 0:09:30 | 0:09:33
# But "how do I get one?" is doubtless what you want to know | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
# Well, it's as simple as sending something into the show | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
# Could be a poem or a story, serious or silly | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
# Could be a picture that you've done, specifically for Lindsey | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
# Got a great idea? Stick it in an e-mail or letter | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
# And in return you could be rewarded with this handsome treasure... | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
I've already got one, but I've written this really good rhyme. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:53
Funny you should say that, because if you send something in | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
-a second time, you could get a silver badge. -Wow! | 0:09:56 | 0:09:58
Yeah, and look at it gleam. | 0:09:58 | 0:09:59
Except, technically, you can't get any cos you're over the age of 15. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:03

# The environment, conservation or nature... | 0:10:24 | 0:10:26
What's this about a sports badge, I think I heard you say? | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
It's fairly self-explanatory, Stephen - clue's in the name! | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
# This one's only available in summer and to get it, in short | 0:10:31 | 0:10:34

Now. You might have guessed, it is time for our feathery feature. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:45
This is Mumble. We will meet him properly later. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
Before that, do you know what? | 0:11:48 | 0:11:49
This is the first time I've ever been this close to an owl. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:52
But for Jake, who's 11, meeting a bird of prey like this | 0:11:52 | 0:11:56
is just part of his everyday life. Check this out. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
Hi, I'm Jake and I look after real live birds of prey. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:04
This is what it's like being me. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:06
My family run a bird of prey centre. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
I help out after school and at weekends. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
As soon as I get home, | 0:12:12 | 0:12:14
I get changed, grab a bite to eat and head over to the centre. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:19
We have over 50 different species of birds here, | 0:12:19 | 0:12:24
including owls, | 0:12:24 | 0:12:26
storks and eagles. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
But my three favourite are... | 0:12:30 | 0:12:32
Peregrine falcons are the fastest bird in the world. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:35
They can even catch other birds in mid-air. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
Kestrels have amazing eyesight | 0:12:38 | 0:12:40
which helps them catch small animals like mice and voles. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
Vultures wee on themselves on hot days to help keep them cool | 0:12:45 | 0:12:49
and to kill off bacteria. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:50
One of my jobs is weighing the birds. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
If they're too heavy, they can't fly. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
If they're too light, | 0:12:57 | 0:12:58
they don't have the energy and the strength to fly. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:01
This one is overweight. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:05
But this one is just right. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:09
It might look like a glamorous job, | 0:13:11 | 0:13:13
but I also have to clean out the feathers and poo. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:15
I also show people around the centre | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
and tell them facts. Say hi, everyone! | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
ALL: Hi! | 0:13:22 | 0:13:23
'There is a lot for me to do. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:25
'But don't worry, I have my mum, dad and my two sisters - | 0:13:25 | 0:13:30
'Daisy and Lily.' | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
'My dad has been working with birds of prey for 30 years. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:38
'And as I get older, he is training me too. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
'One day I would like to run a centre just like him.' | 0:13:41 | 0:13:44
DAD: ..here at the centre, all part of our show. | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
At the weekends, we put on shows, | 0:13:47 | 0:13:51
where we fly the birds for the public. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:54
Those birds are kites, | 0:13:54 | 0:13:55
they're the oldest species of bird of prey in the world. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:58
I do have other interests. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:01
I'm learning to play the guitar. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:04
ELECTRIC GUITAR RIFF RECORD SCRATCHES | 0:14:04 | 0:14:07
Well, I said I was learning. | 0:14:07 | 0:14:09
At the moment, I am hand-rearing a ten-day-old owl. | 0:14:10 | 0:14:13
It's living with me while it's cold outside. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:18
Blue Peter viewers have sent in questions for me. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:22
Star Stone Peach Octopus says... | 0:14:22 | 0:14:24
"How do you know when one or more birds are ill?" | 0:14:24 | 0:14:27
They act differently, and sometimes they won't fly | 0:14:27 | 0:14:31
and they just won't eat. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
Violet Puffy Spangle says... | 0:14:33 | 0:14:35
"If you could be any bird, which one would it be and why?" | 0:14:35 | 0:14:40
Probably a Ruppelle's griffon, | 0:14:40 | 0:14:42
because they soar higher than planes. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:44
Siam Fuzzy Puma asks... | 0:14:44 | 0:14:46
"Who is your favourite celebrity?" | 0:14:46 | 0:14:49
David Attenborough, because he works with wildlife around the world. | 0:14:49 | 0:14:53
Star Stone Whirling Hamster asks... | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
"Has a bird ever pooped on you?" | 0:14:56 | 0:14:58
One day I was cleaning an aviary and two baby turkey vultures | 0:14:58 | 0:15:03
were on a perch and one directed it | 0:15:03 | 0:15:07
right at me, and it went right down my face. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
Star Stone Creative Cheetah wants to know... | 0:15:10 | 0:15:12
"What is your favourite bird and why?" | 0:15:12 | 0:15:14
Funny you should ask that. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:16
This is one of my favourite kestrels. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:18
She's called Whisper. I have to wear a special glove | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
so her talons don't dig into me. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
And this is a pouch where I keep her dinner. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:26
You feel like flying today, Whisper? | 0:15:26 | 0:15:28
I like Whisper because I love the way she acts with me. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:38
I hope you've enjoyed seeing what it is like | 0:15:46 | 0:15:48
to work with birds of prey. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:49
And this is what it's like being me. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
Do you know what? Hearing Jake's story about bird poo, | 0:15:53 | 0:15:56
I'm hoping our next guests are on their best behaviour. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:58
Normally we give them a big round of applause, but today just a quiet one, | 0:15:58 | 0:16:02
for Mumble and Atka with Carole and Vicki. Hello! | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
Thank you so much for coming in today. Oh, Mumble's getting excited! | 0:16:05 | 0:16:09
So, Carol, what type of owl is he? | 0:16:09 | 0:16:11
He is a European eagle owl, one of the largest of all owls. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:15
-Although he's actually quite a small male. -Oh, really? | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
The females are much bigger. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:19
I thought he was really heavy, what about Atka? | 0:16:19 | 0:16:21
Atka's a bit heavier than Mumble, a couple of pound more. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:26
-And what type of owl is she? -She's a female snowy owl. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:30
Are we likely to see them in the UK? If I looked out my window... | 0:16:30 | 0:16:33
You wouldn't see Atka. They live in colder climates. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:36
ATKA HOOTS | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
They live in, like, the Outer Hebrides, Iceland... | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
But you could see an eagle owl, | 0:16:41 | 0:16:42
there are a few pairs in this country. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:44
How old are Mumble and Atka? | 0:16:44 | 0:16:47
Mumble is coming up to five, and Atka is three. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
-And how old will they get? -They can live 30 years plus in captivity, | 0:16:50 | 0:16:55
but in the wild, it can be as little as three years. | 0:16:55 | 0:16:58
So why are they good predators? | 0:16:58 | 0:17:02
They've got fabulous eyesight, and their hearing is very good. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:07
Certainly, with the barn owl, they are totally silent in flight. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:11
These can be quite big, but they don't make a lot of noise, | 0:17:11 | 0:17:14
so their prey doesn't hear them coming. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:16
It seems strange they hunt at dusk or dawn, is it not harder to see? | 0:17:16 | 0:17:21
Different owls have different colours of eyes, | 0:17:21 | 0:17:25
and that denotes whether they are nocturnal or diurnal hunters. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:28
Some hunt when it goes dark, some hunt when it's getting light. | 0:17:28 | 0:17:32
If you look closely at Atka, has she got two different eyelids? | 0:17:32 | 0:17:36
Yeah, they have what's called a nictitating membrane | 0:17:36 | 0:17:40
which helps them to clear their eye and when they're flying | 0:17:40 | 0:17:44
it's like a visor, really. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:46
It just protects their eye. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
They've got one that protects it | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
and one that's a bit like a windscreen wiper. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:52
Yeah, they don't blink as much with the full eyelid, | 0:17:52 | 0:17:54
but you will see that one quite often. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:56
I think we've actually got that in slow motion. | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
That is amazing, two eyelids. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:03
You've brought some eggshells in with you today, | 0:18:03 | 0:18:06
what is this little one? | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
An English barn owl egg. | 0:18:09 | 0:18:10
-And this big one? -And that one is a European eagle owl. | 0:18:10 | 0:18:13
-Wow, so this one grows into Mumble? -Yes. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:17
What do they eat when they're just little babies? | 0:18:17 | 0:18:19
Their parents will bring them mice, voles, small animals like that. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:25
The parents will tear it up and feed the chicks, | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
until they're old enough to eat the full animal themselves. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:32
OK, let's do some owl myth-busting. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
-I have heard that they can turn their heads 360 degrees, is it true? -No. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:39
-Aww! So how far? -Just past 180 degrees, | 0:18:39 | 0:18:43
but they can turn it different ways as well, | 0:18:43 | 0:18:45
so they can look upside down. | 0:18:45 | 0:18:47
They've got a lot of extra vertebrae in their neck | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
because they need to be able to see a lot. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:53
Their eyes are fixed in their skull, so they can't look | 0:18:53 | 0:18:56
side-to-side like we can, which is why they need to turn their head. | 0:18:56 | 0:19:00
And owl myth number two is that they're wise. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:05
-They have to be really clever, yes. -Oh, yes. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:09
Just to be able to survive, they have to be alert all the time. | 0:19:09 | 0:19:15
Survival isn't easy for them, so they need to be clever. | 0:19:15 | 0:19:18
-So they are wise, Mumble's a wise old owl? -Yes. | 0:19:18 | 0:19:20
-MUMBLE HOOTS -Not particularly old, are you? | 0:19:20 | 0:19:23
He can hear us speaking about him! | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
Thank you very much for bringing them in today. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:27
I just knew meeting these owls was going to be a hoot. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:30
CAROLE AND VICKI LAUGH Get it? Over to you. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:32
That there was a Barney Harwood joke. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:36
Now, it is time to welcome to Blue Peter - | 0:19:36 | 0:19:37
put your hands together, make some noise, for Tich! | 0:19:37 | 0:19:40
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:19:40 | 0:19:42
-Welcome to Blue Peter. How are you? -I am very well, how are you? | 0:19:42 | 0:19:45
I am very, very good. | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
It is probably fair to say your pop career has just skyrocketed, | 0:19:47 | 0:19:50
with four million hits online, | 0:19:50 | 0:19:52
you've been touring with the likes of Olly Murs, Little Mix, | 0:19:52 | 0:19:54
One Direction, how on earth are you feeling at this point? | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
I am so lucky, I am so happy. | 0:19:57 | 0:19:59
It is an absolute honour to be able to share the stage | 0:19:59 | 0:20:02
with such amazing artists. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:04
-And just live the music dream. -Exactly. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
A little bird tells me that you're a bit of a fashionista? | 0:20:07 | 0:20:09
I love fashion, I always have done. | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
I love going through the magazines, picking out different styles, | 0:20:12 | 0:20:16
I love experimenting with colours and different shapes. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:19
-Yes, it is a big hobby of mine. -Well, you will love this, then. | 0:20:19 | 0:20:23
We will be showing you how to make one of these T-shirts. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:27
All of the instructions and details are on our website... | 0:20:27 | 0:20:30
Now, you may have seen something similar to this with tie-dying, | 0:20:34 | 0:20:37
but this is much less messy, and in my opinion, much cooler. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:42
You need a plain coloured T-shirt, plastic cups, | 0:20:42 | 0:20:46
coloured permanent markers, a paintbrush, | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
elastic bands, and the important part - | 0:20:49 | 0:20:51
make-up remover, but this is the liquid, and not the lotion. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:56
First, Tich, we have to place a plastic cup in between the T-shirt. | 0:20:56 | 0:21:01
Then you take an elastic band and wrap it | 0:21:01 | 0:21:04
-round the rim of the cup. -What? | 0:21:04 | 0:21:06
That becomes our canvas. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:08
Simply repeat the process and choose a pattern of your desire. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:13
-I have gone... -Very nice. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:15
..for the three across the top, much like my favourite crossword. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:20
-What have you gone for, Tich? -A diagonal, | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
I wanted to spread the design throughout the whole T-shirt. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:26
I like it, but while we do that, there are loads of questions | 0:21:26 | 0:21:29
the viewers sent in, I think Lindsey's going to ask them. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:31
-We've got loads for you, Tich. -Oh! -So we'll just dive straight in. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:35
The first one's from Green Sweet Giraffe, he says... | 0:21:35 | 0:21:37
"What gives you inspiration for your songs?" | 0:21:37 | 0:21:39
Inspiration for me comes from real life things. | 0:21:39 | 0:21:43
-I guess my songs are like a diary. -I like it. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:47
Ruby Sprinkles Shark says... | 0:21:47 | 0:21:48
"What's your favourite song to dance to?" | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
I think anything from when I was growing up, really. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:55
-I love Britney Spears. -Yes. -Backstreet Boys. -Nineties. | 0:21:55 | 0:22:00
-Good pop music. -And Smiling Chimp says... | 0:22:00 | 0:22:03
"What would you do if you weren't a singer?" | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06
I think I would aspire to be a chef. Or a baker... | 0:22:06 | 0:22:10
or a candlestick maker! | 0:22:10 | 0:22:13
I like what you did there. Poetry as well as a singer! | 0:22:13 | 0:22:17
Now, it gets a bit messy at this point, | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
worth putting a newspaper underneath. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:22
We need to drip this onto the colours, | 0:22:22 | 0:22:26
we are not pouring it. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
-And then we will work the colour in with the paintbrush. -Oh, wow. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:32
-You can possibly see the colours begin to run. -Oh, dear. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:38
-Tiny drip. -Tich, yours looks good. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:42
I like how you've mixed the colours, | 0:22:42 | 0:22:44
that looks really cool. TICH LAUGHS | 0:22:44 | 0:22:45
Now, there is also something I should have possibly said - | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
not to put too much on, otherwise it might look like that! | 0:22:48 | 0:22:52
-It looks good! -Can I just say, it was meant to be a happy star. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:57
-Well, it's a something star. -Now it's a star in the night sky. | 0:22:57 | 0:23:02
Once you have done this on all three of the cups, wait for it to dry | 0:23:02 | 0:23:07
for two hours, pop off the elastic bands, take the cups out, | 0:23:07 | 0:23:10
and then you will end up with T-shirts which look like those. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
How good do they look?! | 0:23:13 | 0:23:15
You might also get permanent marker on your fingers, | 0:23:15 | 0:23:18
so you can use warm, soapy water. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:19
The T-shirts, if you want to wash those, | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
hand wash them in cool water, do not put them | 0:23:22 | 0:23:24
in the washing machine, the colour will go everywhere. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:28
If you have done one, take a photo and send them to us. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:31
We love when you get involved with our makes. It's... | 0:23:31 | 0:23:33
We'll try and put as many photos as possible online. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:38
It's time to take a look at what you've done so far. Wow! | 0:23:40 | 0:23:43
-That is exceptional work. -Lovely, really nice. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
Something which you are exceptional at is singing, and we're | 0:23:46 | 0:23:49
going to be seeing you in just a few moments. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:51
-Thank you so much for coming to visit us. -Thank you. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:53
Now, whilst Tich goes and gets herself ready, | 0:23:53 | 0:23:55
here's what is coming up next week. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:57
The three of us will be taking on a dance challenge | 0:23:57 | 0:24:00
with the cast of CBBC show The Next Step - you are going to love it. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:04
And we will be showing you how to make these Easter egg nests. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:09
And I will be facing | 0:24:09 | 0:24:10
one of my biggest fears, it is fish. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:13
And I absolutely hated them, they were terrifying! | 0:24:13 | 0:24:16
