-Hi, folks. Welcome to Brain Freeze! -It's time to reveal... | 0:12:44 | 0:12:48
-Today we're asking where do clouds come from? -Clowns? | 0:12:51 | 0:12:55
-I'm sure everyone knows they come from the circus! -Not clowns, clouds! | 0:12:55 | 0:12:59
Oh, whoo! | 0:12:59 | 0:13:01
As we all know, water occurs as a liquid and a solid, | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
-but it also occurs as a gas called water vapour. -That's news to me. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:07
You see, water floats around us | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
all the time, in the form of tiny gas particles. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
As the sun heats water on the earth, | 0:13:13 | 0:13:15
these particles rise up in a process known as evaporation. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:19
Up, up and away! | 0:13:19 | 0:13:20
As they rise up, they bump into other small particles called aerosols. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:25
Aerosols are tiny little bits of dust and salt | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
and other stuff floating around in the air. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
As the air gets cooler, water vapour sticks to the aerosols, | 0:13:30 | 0:13:33
forming droplets, | 0:13:33 | 0:13:34
and these droplets eventually come together to form clouds. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
-This is called condensation. -Heh! | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
And there was me thinking they were made of candyfloss! | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
We'll be right back after this break. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:45

Welcome back, Brain Freezers. So, Dr Knowles, condensation. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
Where were we? | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
Well, as the air continues to rise and cool, | 0:14:23 | 0:14:25
clouds begin to merge and grow, | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
and as the droplets within the clouds start to stick together, | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
they become too heavy to resist the pull of gravity, | 0:14:30 | 0:14:33
and fall to Earth as precipitation. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:35
-Precipi-what now? -Precipitation. | 0:14:35 | 0:14:38
-Snow, sleet or rain! -We know all about rain, don't we, Colin? | 0:14:38 | 0:14:42
SAD PIANO TUNE, THUNDER | 0:14:42 | 0:14:45
This water then collects in oceans, rivers and lakes, | 0:14:45 | 0:14:48
ready to start the process all over again. We call this the water cycle. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:54
So, hang on. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:55
You're saying it's the same water going around and around and around? | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
Exactly! | 0:14:58 | 0:15:00
In fact, the water in your glass could be the same water that | 0:15:00 | 0:15:03
a dinosaur drank millions of years ago! | 0:15:03 | 0:15:06
Blech! I knew it tasted a bit funny! Keh! | 0:15:06 | 0:15:09
Anyway, folks, there you have it. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:11
So now you know how clouds are formed. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:16
And they are not, I repeat, not made of candyfloss! See you next time! | 0:15:16 | 0:15:21
