I have this little sister Lola.

She's small.

And very funny.

Lola is excited because she is going to find out

her part in the school play about the seasons.

You know, Charlie,

I am sure Mrs Hampton is going to choose ME to be the sun.

You see, the sun is very nice.

It is warm and helps things to grow and makes people happy.

And the sun is always there

all of the seasons, all of the time.

And that means the sun will be in the play from the very beginning

all the way through the middle until the very, very last end.

Mrs Hampton MUST choose me to play the sun.

But, Lola, there are lots of parts in a play about the seasons.

What about a summer strawberry?

-That would be just as much fun as being the sun.

Don't be silly, Charlie.

There are far too many other strawberries.

And what if I get squished?

There's only ONE sun and that is ME.

But, Lola, what if Mrs Hampton doesn't choose you to play the sun?

But Mrs Hampton hasn't given you a part yet.

she will see that I have to be the sun.

And the things I need to make a beautiful sun costume are -

Mum's yellow gloves and her scarf with all the feathers.

Face paints and stickers.

Dad's big hat.

My school leotard.

And yellow tights.

Please, Charlie, do not come into the bedroom

cos I'll be very, very, extremely busy.

See? Without autumn, we wouldn't have any of those things.

I'm a boring, brown autumn leaf.

-And I don't like brown.

-But, Lola, in autumn leaves change colour.

And then they fall from the trees.

Yes, hundreds and millions and trillions of them.

-Anyone can be a leaf, Charlie.

-If I was in the school play,

I would definitely, definitely want to be a leaf. Definitely.

Why, Charlie?

-They're so boring.

-You're joking, aren't you?

Leaves are not boring, Lola. Look.

Leaves keep animals out of the sun.

So the animals are not so hot.

That's not all, Lola. Leaves make beds for birds.

(That must be their best job.)

And, Lola, leaves are very useful when it rains

cos they make umbrellas for insects and creepy-crawlies.

You know, that is very useful.

And, Lola, leaves change colour

from green to yellow to orange to deep red, purple

and maroon and chestnut.

You know, Charlie, that is a very nice thing about a leaf.

I am a chestnut leaf.

These are really extremely special, aren't they, Charlie?

Yes, Lola, they are.
