0:00:260:00:30

Hi, I'm JB

0:00:300:00:31

and welcome to Down On The Farm.

0:00:310:00:33

In autumn, it's time to make sure everything's working

0:00:330:00:36

well on the farm before winter.

0:00:360:00:37

While I get things sorted here,

0:00:370:00:39

let's see what Storm is up to.

0:00:390:00:41

Today, we're in Norfolk and we've come to a very special place.

0:00:490:00:53

Where are we, guys?

0:00:530:00:55

ALL: A maze!

0:00:550:00:57

A maze is like a massive puzzle

0:00:570:00:58

with lots of paths that you

0:00:580:01:00

have to find your way through

0:01:000:01:01

and we are going to meet Farmer Richard today

0:01:010:01:04

to find out what he grows here.

0:01:040:01:05

Let's go, guys.

0:01:050:01:06

Farmer Richard's left some clues to help us figure out what he grows.

0:01:100:01:15

Storm, what's that?

0:01:150:01:17

It says that this plant is a crop that is a type of cereal.

0:01:170:01:20

What do you think that could be?

0:01:200:01:22

Corn!

0:01:220:01:24

Carrot, pumpkin...?

0:01:240:01:26

Great guesses, guys.

0:01:260:01:27

Well, we'll have to find Farmer Richard

0:01:270:01:29

to find out if we're right.

0:01:290:01:31

I think he's this way.

0:01:310:01:32

Storm, look, a clue!

0:01:380:01:40

Let's take a look.

0:01:400:01:42

What does it say?

0:01:420:01:43

It says...

0:01:460:01:47

What do you think that could be?

0:01:500:01:52

-Corn.

-Oats.

0:01:520:01:53

Well, we'll have to find Farmer Richard

0:01:530:01:55

to find out if we're right.

0:01:550:01:56

Let's go!

0:01:560:01:58

Look, there's a clue!

0:02:040:02:05

Well, let's see what is says.

0:02:080:02:09

..but it's not quite the same.

0:02:170:02:19

What do you think it could be?

0:02:190:02:21

Popcorn.

0:02:210:02:22

Wheat.

0:02:220:02:25

They're great guesses, guys, but I still have no idea. Let's go.

0:02:250:02:30

-Look!

-Look!

-Hello, everyone.

0:02:360:02:39

ALL: Hi, Farmer Richard!

0:02:390:02:41

Now, I'm so glad we've found you

0:02:410:02:42

because we've been trying to work out what it is you grow here.

0:02:420:02:46

It's actually a plant called maize.

0:02:460:02:48

So this is a maze made of maize?

0:02:480:02:51

Yes, it is, exactly.

0:02:510:02:52

That is so clever but what is maize?

0:02:520:02:55

So, it's a type of corn. This is what it looks like.

0:02:550:02:58

It's actually different to corn on the cob that you'd normally

0:02:580:03:01

buy in the shops.

0:03:010:03:02

The plants grow about two metres tall, which is

0:03:020:03:04

taller than most grown-ups are and then the cobs actually

0:03:040:03:07

grow on the plant themselves.

0:03:070:03:09

And now it's autumn, what happens to all these crops?

0:03:090:03:12

So soon we'll harvest the plants

0:03:120:03:14

and we use the maize to feed our cows over the winter.

0:03:140:03:17

-So there's no waste?

-Nothing is wasted.

0:03:170:03:19

Thank you very much for teaching us all about maize.

0:03:190:03:22

I've had an a-maize-ing day!

0:03:220:03:23

-What about you guys?

-Yeah!

0:03:230:03:26

Well, while we try and find our way out of here,

0:03:270:03:30

why don't you find out about autumn nuts?

0:03:300:03:33

ALL: Bye!

0:03:350:03:37

In autumn, lots of different trees produce nuts,

0:03:380:03:42

like these acorns, which grow on oak trees.

0:03:420:03:46

The nuts fall to the ground when they are fully grown

0:03:460:03:49

and can make great food for wildlife,

0:03:490:03:52

as long as creatures can manage to

0:03:520:03:53

break through their hard shells.

0:03:530:03:55

Some animals, like badgers and deer,

0:03:580:04:00

have really strong teeth and jaws.

0:04:000:04:03

They can use these to crack the shells open.

0:04:040:04:06

Squirrels chew nuts,

0:04:080:04:09

often breaking shells in half,

0:04:090:04:12

while tiny dormice slowly nibble

0:04:120:04:15

a neat hole in hazelnuts.

0:04:150:04:18

Many birds use their sharp beaks

0:04:180:04:20

to peck or prise nuts open.

0:04:200:04:22

This bird is called a nuthatch.

0:04:230:04:25

It uses its beak a bit like a hammer or drill, pushing

0:04:260:04:30

nuts into cracks in tree bark to hold them steady while it works.

0:04:300:04:34

Some chaffinches have noticed that passing cars are smashing

0:04:360:04:39

beech nuts open on a road.

0:04:390:04:41

These smart birds just have to gather them up, saving time

0:04:410:04:46

and energy on a cold, autumn day.

0:04:460:04:49

We've come to a wood carving festival in the Scottish Highlands.

0:04:550:04:58

People have come from all over the world to take part in a

0:04:580:05:01

competition where the only tool they are allowed to use is a chainsaw.

0:05:010:05:07

A chainsaw is a tool used to cut trees and wood.

0:05:070:05:11

It has lots of sharp teeth that go round

0:05:110:05:13

and round a blade very quickly.

0:05:130:05:15

Hello, I'm Alice.

0:05:150:05:17

I'm a chainsaw carver from the Highlands

0:05:170:05:19

and today I'm going to carve

0:05:190:05:20

a fairy-tale castle.

0:05:200:05:23

Hi, my name is Josh, I'm from Canada

0:05:230:05:24

and I'm soon to be carving

0:05:240:05:26

this large Sitka spruce behind me

0:05:260:05:28

into a lovely bench.

0:05:280:05:29

Hi, I'm Jonathan, I'm from Harrogate

0:05:300:05:32

and today I'm going to be carving a kelpie,

0:05:320:05:33

which is a Scottish water horse.

0:05:330:05:35

Each competitor is given a tall log from a sustainable forest.

0:05:360:05:40

They have just four hours to carve a design.

0:05:400:05:43

Carving wood with a chainsaw is very noisy and dangerous

0:05:450:05:49

and can only be done by adults who know how to use a chainsaw safely.

0:05:490:05:53

But there are other ways to carve wood.

0:05:550:05:57

-We just whittle away like that. OK?

-This is Steve.

0:06:020:06:06

He's teaching these children to carve wooden sticks using

0:06:060:06:09

a potato peeler.

0:06:090:06:11

This is called whittling.

0:06:110:06:13

We made lots of small cuts in the wood.

0:06:150:06:17

We always peel away from ourselves.

0:06:210:06:23

I peeled all the bark away.

0:06:270:06:30

We rub them smooth with sandpaper.

0:06:300:06:33

We put a capercaillie on top.

0:06:350:06:37

ALL: Finished.

0:06:420:06:43

And time is up at the chainsaw carving competition too.

0:06:450:06:49

Alice has made a beautiful castle.

0:06:490:06:51

Wow, look at Josh's bench!

0:06:530:06:55

It's got owls on it.

0:06:550:06:56

And look at Jonathan's amazing kelpie.

0:06:590:07:01

The leftover wood will be used for firewood and pet bedding.

0:07:030:07:07

What a great festival.

0:07:090:07:11

What's that whisper in the trees?

0:07:160:07:18

It's the sound of autumn leaves

0:07:200:07:23

Swishing, rustling, crisp and dry

0:07:230:07:26

They flutter as a breeze sighs by.

0:07:280:07:31

HOOT

0:07:310:07:32

What's that screeching in the dark?

0:07:320:07:35

It's a tawny owl making its mark

0:07:350:07:39

Telling rivals to keep away

0:07:390:07:42

"This is my patch and I'm here to stay."

0:07:420:07:45

Now, what's that tiny, snuffling grunt?

0:07:480:07:52

It's the sound of a hedgehog on the hunt

0:07:520:07:55

Sniffing around for autumn bugs

0:07:550:08:00

Before it curls up somewhere snug.

0:08:000:08:03

I'm in Gloucestershire today to meet Farmer Peter on his sheep farm.

0:08:080:08:12

I'm told he has something interesting to show me.

0:08:120:08:15

I think I can hear him coming now.

0:08:150:08:16

-Hi JB. Welcome to my farm.

-Thanks, Peter.

0:08:210:08:25

What's this you're sitting on?

0:08:250:08:27

This is a quad bike.

0:08:270:08:28

Quad is another name for four and this bike has four wheels.

0:08:280:08:31

-It helps with lots of my jobs.

-That must be handy on such a big farm.

0:08:310:08:35

It is. My sheep live in fields all the way over there.

0:08:350:08:38

It's quite far to walk so I use this to get there quickly.

0:08:380:08:41

-Do you think I could have a go?

-Yes.

0:08:410:08:44

I've got one you can try in a field safely. Follow me.

0:08:440:08:47

There are three important parts you need to know about, JB.

0:08:540:08:56

Firstly, the throttle makes the bike go.

0:08:560:08:59

The brakes make it stop and finally,

0:08:590:09:02

the tyres have lots of grip for driving through the muddy fields.

0:09:020:09:05

Throttle...

0:09:050:09:07

Brakes...

0:09:070:09:08

Tyres.

0:09:080:09:09

Firstly, you need to practise driving nice

0:09:090:09:11

and slowly in a straight line.

0:09:110:09:13

Can you drive over to that bucket and back?

0:09:130:09:14

I'll give it a go.

0:09:140:09:16

It's time to start practising so I can get used to the controls.

0:09:220:09:26

-You have to be able to turn too, JB. Try driving in a big circle.

-OK.

0:09:360:09:40

A circle is a bit trickier but I think I'm getting the hang of it.

0:09:470:09:51

OK, JB. I think you're ready to come and help me on the farm.

0:10:000:10:03

-These are my sheep, JB.

-And what's that on the back of your quad bike?

0:10:110:10:14

It's a feeder. I pull it along with the quad bike and it drops the food.

0:10:140:10:18

-Do you want to see how it works?

-Absolutely.

-OK.

0:10:180:10:21

Using the quad bike, Peter can feed the sheep quickly,

0:10:290:10:32

spreading the food around the field.

0:10:320:10:34

We have to drive nice and carefully among the sheep.

0:10:360:10:39

Well, that's all the food out for the sheep, JB. You rode really well.

0:10:440:10:47

Thanks.

0:10:470:10:48

It was fun learning and seeing

0:10:480:10:50

how you use the quad bike on your farm.

0:10:500:10:53

While we ride back to the farmhouse,

0:10:530:10:54

why don't you find out how to make some fun autumn art from trees?

0:10:540:10:59

When you're outside this autumn...

0:11:050:11:07

You could try to do tree rubbings.

0:11:080:11:11

Find a tree.

0:11:110:11:13

Put the paper on the bark and colour over the top with crayon.

0:11:130:11:19

A pretty pattern will show up, just like the one on the tree.

0:11:190:11:23

You can try this in different colours and with different trees.

0:11:240:11:28

Enjoy being out and about.

0:11:290:11:31

Lots of people like to start the day with a bowl of cereal

0:11:370:11:41

and a big splash of milk.

0:11:410:11:42

But how are breakfast cereals actually made?

0:11:420:11:46

This is Carl, who works in a cereal factory.

0:11:460:11:49

In a factory like this one, different types of cereals are

0:11:490:11:52

made everyday by combining lots of ingredients that are grown on farms.

0:11:520:11:56

Today the factory is making a cereal using oats

0:11:570:12:01

and pieces of dried coconut.

0:12:010:12:03

First, the bags of ingredients that have come from the farms are cut

0:12:050:12:08

and tipped into special containers.

0:12:080:12:11

The containers are put into this tumbler.

0:12:110:12:14

It spins around until the ingredients are mixed

0:12:140:12:16

together perfectly.

0:12:160:12:18

Next, the ingredients are spread out evenly onto a conveyor belt.

0:12:200:12:25

The cereal is cooked in this really long oven.

0:12:250:12:28

The oats have turned a lovely golden brown.

0:12:360:12:38

When the cereal has cooled, some other ingredients are added.

0:12:410:12:45

Today, we're adding strawberries.

0:12:450:12:47

This machine weighs out the ingredients

0:12:500:12:53

so that every bag of cereal has a perfect mix.

0:12:530:12:56

These bagging machines pour the cereal into bags...

0:13:030:13:06

..which then go into boxes.

0:13:080:13:10

The boxes are loaded onto the lorry. Who knows?

0:13:130:13:17

One of these might end up on YOUR breakfast table.

0:13:170:13:21

Storm and I had a great time today. We hope you did too.

0:13:250:13:28

If you want to have fun with your own farm,

0:13:280:13:30

go to the CBeebies website

0:13:300:13:32

to play the Down On The Farm game.

0:13:320:13:34

See you next time. Bye!
