Hello! I'm JB and welcome to Down On The Farm. Summer is here.

0:00:300:00:34

Farmers are busy outside making use of the warmer days

0:00:340:00:39

and there's lots of work to do.

0:00:390:00:41

So while I help out on this farm,

0:00:410:00:43

why don't you find out what Storm is up to?

0:00:430:00:46

In Summer, I love to be outside eating fresh, crisp salad.

0:00:560:01:02

Now, you can have it in a sandwich, or with your dinner,

0:01:020:01:05

but my favourite way to have it is in a big bowl, all to myself.

0:01:050:01:10

At this farm in East Lothian, they grow lots of leafy vegetables that

0:01:120:01:16

are used in salad and Farmer Martin has asked if I can help today.

0:01:160:01:21

-Hi, Martin!

-Hi, Storm!

0:01:250:01:26

Welcome to the farm. We've got a busy day ahead.

0:01:260:01:29

We're making 300 bags of salad.

0:01:290:01:32

300 bags of salad?!

0:01:320:01:33

-That's right. Would you like to help?

-I'd love to.

-Let's go!

0:01:330:01:38

So, these are the vegetables that we're going to be picking today.

0:01:410:01:46

That's right, Storm.

0:01:460:01:47

These are Mizuna leaves and they were only planted a few weeks ago

0:01:470:01:51

-but they're ready to be harvested now.

-A few weeks ago?

0:01:510:01:54

-So they grow quick.

-They do.

0:01:540:01:55

There are lots of leaves to pick,

0:01:550:01:57

so James, Saul, Bryony and Hero have come to help us.

0:01:570:02:01

Well, these ones look really tall, don't they?

0:02:010:02:04

Shall we harvest some of them?

0:02:040:02:06

That's a big bunch.

0:02:070:02:09

Grab this little clump here. That's it.

0:02:090:02:11

I'll slice it off...carefully.

0:02:110:02:14

-There we go.

-I've got a big bunch.

0:02:140:02:16

A dainty wee bunch for you. Here we go.

0:02:190:02:22

Now we need to put all the leaves into bags to make salads.

0:02:270:02:31

We mix the Mizuna with lots of other leafy vegetables.

0:02:330:02:37

Have you got some pak choi for me? In it goes.

0:02:370:02:40

Wow. Excellent.

0:02:400:02:42

They look great, don't they?

0:02:450:02:47

That'll be a good salad.

0:02:470:02:48

All bagged up and ready to go.

0:02:480:02:51

Now it's off to the packing shed to put our salads into boxes with

0:02:530:02:56

lots of other fruit and vegetables.

0:02:560:02:59

When the boxes are ready, they are handed over to the delivery men,

0:02:590:03:03

who take them in their vans, straight to the customers' houses.

0:03:030:03:08

I didn't realise how much work went into preparing salad.

0:03:090:03:13

There is a lot and we do it every day.

0:03:130:03:15

You've worked really hard, so here's a couple for you to take away.

0:03:150:03:19

Thank you very much. Now, while we relax after a busy day,

0:03:190:03:23

why don't you find out more about what bees do in summer?

0:03:230:03:26

Summer is a very busy time for bees.

0:03:260:03:30

They visit lots of summer flowers to drink nectar,

0:03:300:03:34

a sugary liquid made by the flowers.

0:03:340:03:37

This gives the bees the energy they need to fly back

0:03:370:03:40

and forth to their nest or hive.

0:03:400:03:42

Honey bees also collect nectar to make honey.

0:03:440:03:48

They store their honey in honeycombs to eat in winter.

0:03:480:03:52

Pollen is a powder made by flowers.

0:03:530:03:56

It is often yellow or orange.

0:03:560:03:58

Many bees gather pollen to eat or to feed to baby bees.

0:04:000:04:04

It is very good for them.

0:04:040:04:06

This honey bee has collected yellow pollen

0:04:070:04:10

in special hairs on its back legs.

0:04:100:04:12

These are called pollen baskets.

0:04:120:04:15

By filling their pollen baskets, many honey bees

0:04:150:04:18

and bumble bees can gather lots of pollen in one trip,

0:04:180:04:22

saving time and energy.

0:04:220:04:24

Back at home, they carefully store the precious pollen for later.

0:04:250:04:30

-In the summer...

-It's fun to look for insects.

0:04:360:04:40

We're making a bug hotel.

0:04:410:04:43

-ALL:

-Let's go!

0:04:430:04:45

A bug hotel is something you can build with different

0:04:480:04:52

materials that lots of insects like.

0:04:520:04:54

Now everybody, where are we going to put this hotel today?

0:04:560:04:59

Can we put it down by the pond?

0:04:590:05:01

Why down at the pond?

0:05:010:05:03

Because that's where all the minibeasts are.

0:05:030:05:06

And why do we need to build it on the flat ground?

0:05:060:05:09

So it doesn't tip over.

0:05:090:05:11

Just like a hotel for people, a bug hotel has walls

0:05:150:05:18

and different floors.

0:05:180:05:20

This one is made out of recycled wooden pallets

0:05:200:05:23

but you could make one in a shoebox.

0:05:230:05:25

Now the walls are ready,

0:05:270:05:29

we need to collect things to fill the hotel with.

0:05:290:05:32

Bees like plant pots.

0:05:360:05:38

We need to collect lots.

0:05:380:05:40

-BOTH:

-We're collecting sticks.

0:05:420:05:44

We're rolling up cardboard for bugs to hide in.

0:05:460:05:50

Great job, everybody.

0:05:530:05:55

We've collected lots of nice things for the minibeasts.

0:05:550:05:58

Now all we need to do is put them into the hotel.

0:05:580:06:01

There are sticks for the spiders and ants...

0:06:030:06:06

..tubes for centipedes to hide in...

0:06:070:06:10

straw that ladybirds like because it's nice and dry...

0:06:100:06:14

and plant pots and flowers for the bees.

0:06:140:06:18

Got it in? Well done.

0:06:180:06:20

Oh, the bees are going to have a good home there.

0:06:210:06:24

-ALL:

-Finished!

0:06:240:06:27

Now we've finished the hotel, what can we do now?

0:06:290:06:33

-ALL:

-Look for bugs!

0:06:330:06:35

That's so big. Whoa!

0:06:460:06:50

While we look out for insects visiting our bug hotel,

0:06:500:06:53

you can enjoy our poem about flying high.

0:06:530:06:57

High in a summer sky, I see birds fly by

0:07:020:07:06

As they dart and loop, hover and swoop

0:07:060:07:10

I wish I could do that

0:07:110:07:13

High in a summer sky, bright kites catch my eye

0:07:160:07:20

As they sway in the wind, dip and rise up again

0:07:200:07:25

I wish I could do that

0:07:250:07:27

High in a summer sky, soaring planes pass by

0:07:280:07:33

As they paint the sky white, I smile with delight

0:07:330:07:37

I wish I could do that.

0:07:370:07:39

I've come to a farm in Herefordshire,

0:07:450:07:48

which has a special name. It's called a stud farm.

0:07:480:07:51

Can you guess what animals they have here?

0:07:510:07:55

HORSE NEIGHS

0:07:550:07:56

That's right, horses!

0:07:560:07:58

-Hi, Farmer Anne!

-Hello!

-What is a stud farm?

0:08:010:08:04

A stud farm is where we breed horses.

0:08:040:08:06

The foals go from us and they go all over the world.

0:08:060:08:09

Well, it sounds like a busy place. Can I help out today?

0:08:090:08:13

Yes, I've got two helpers back in the yard.

0:08:130:08:16

-Let's go and join them.

-Fantastic. Let's go.

0:08:160:08:19

-Hi, Ella. Hi, Evie. BOTH:

-Hi, JB.

-So, what can I do to help?

0:08:260:08:32

We need to feed the stallions.

0:08:320:08:34

And what's a stallion, Anne?

0:08:340:08:36

A stallion is a male horse that can father foals.

0:08:360:08:39

Oh, so they're the dads!

0:08:390:08:41

-Yes, that's right.

-And so what do we feed them?

0:08:410:08:45

-They eat sugar beets.

-And nuts.

0:08:450:08:47

Cool. Well, let's get feeding.

0:08:470:08:49

Sugar beet gives the horses energy.

0:08:490:08:52

There we go.

0:08:520:08:53

The horse nuts have lots of bits to keep them healthy.

0:08:550:08:59

So we've got our sugar beets and our nuts.

0:08:590:09:02

I think it's time to get mixing, isn't it?

0:09:020:09:04

-How does it feel, girls?

-It feels squishy.

0:09:060:09:09

Now that that's all mixed up, it's time to feed the horses.

0:09:110:09:15

Come on, then.

0:09:150:09:16

I think he likes it.

0:09:180:09:20

Now that's the boys sorted, it's time to see the girls.

0:09:230:09:28

-So do the mums have a special name too?

-Yes, the mums are called mares.

0:09:280:09:33

-And the babies are called foals.

-Well, the foals are REALLY cute.

0:09:330:09:37

Now we need to go into the field to check the mares

0:09:370:09:41

and foals are nice and healthy.

0:09:410:09:42

We are safe to do this because Farmer Anne is an expert,

0:09:420:09:46

but you should always ask an adult

0:09:460:09:48

before going into a field with animals.

0:09:480:09:51

So who do we have here?

0:09:520:09:53

This is Melody.

0:09:540:09:56

And this is Stormy.

0:09:560:09:58

-And how old is Stormy?

-She's two months old.

0:09:580:10:01

She was born in the spring and she grows up in the nice summer

0:10:010:10:04

weather, and she'll have this lovely lush green grass to eat.

0:10:040:10:08

And how do we know if they're healthy?

0:10:080:10:11

She should have a very shiny coat.

0:10:110:10:13

And nice bright eyes.

0:10:130:10:15

Well, they look nice and healthy to me.

0:10:150:10:19

The other horses are looking healthy too.

0:10:190:10:22

The last job of the day is to exercise the show ponies.

0:10:230:10:27

They take part in competitions,

0:10:270:10:30

so they need to practise to keep the ponies and riders in top shape.

0:10:300:10:34

Well done, Ella.

0:10:340:10:37

Well, I've had so much fun here today on the stud farm.

0:10:370:10:41

-Do you think these guys have been great? BOTH:

-Yeah!

0:10:410:10:44

While we go back to the stables,

0:10:440:10:46

why don't you find out about being outdoors in the summer?

0:10:460:10:50

It's fun to play outside in the garden or park in summer.

0:10:530:10:57

When running around, you'll see lots of plants and flowers.

0:10:570:11:02

But these plants are stinging nettles

0:11:020:11:05

and, if touched, can give you an itchy rash, which hurts.

0:11:050:11:09

If you get stung by a nettle, look for a leaf like this,

0:11:090:11:12

called a dock leaf,

0:11:120:11:14

and rub it or keep it cool, but try not to scratch the rash.

0:11:140:11:19

Enjoy being out and about!

0:11:190:11:21

On warm summer days, it's fun to eat outside.

0:11:270:11:30

Daniel and Holly are getting ready to make some beefburgers with Becky.

0:11:310:11:36

It's time to measure the ingredients.

0:11:360:11:38

We need to put in flour.

0:11:380:11:40

We check it's the right amount with these scales.

0:11:400:11:44

Now we need to add some onions.

0:11:440:11:46

That's it, perfect.

0:11:480:11:50

What's our last special ingredient to make a beefburger?

0:11:500:11:54

-BOTH: Minced beef!

-Yes!

0:11:540:11:55

Ooh, that's all a bit squidgy, isn't it?

0:11:570:12:01

-Is it mixing time yet?

-Yes, I think it is.

0:12:010:12:04

Get your hands in and get mixing.

0:12:040:12:06

I've got everything from the bottom up to the top.

0:12:070:12:14

Let's make this mixture into some burgers.

0:12:140:12:18

-We make them into round balls.

-Not too massive. Good boy, well done.

0:12:180:12:22

-Squish, squish, squish.

-That's lovely.

0:12:220:12:25

This is going to be a good one.

0:12:250:12:27

That's it.

0:12:270:12:29

Let's squish them into patties.

0:12:300:12:33

That's right, Daniel. Nice and flat.

0:12:330:12:36

These look great. Let's clean our hands and get these on the barbecue.

0:12:360:12:41

-ALL:

-Yes!

0:12:410:12:43

Here are the burgers and some colourful vegetable kebabs.

0:12:440:12:48

This barbecue is super hot,

0:12:480:12:50

so make sure you stand well back

0:12:500:12:53

and an adult should always do the cooking.

0:12:530:12:56

It's sizzling hot.

0:12:560:12:58

I want that one.

0:12:580:12:59

The burgers must be properly cooked.

0:12:590:13:02

They're ready to eat

0:13:020:13:04

when they're hot all the way through with no pink.

0:13:040:13:07

-Right then, who is hungry?

-Me!

-Me!

0:13:070:13:09

-Who would like some veggie kebabs?

-Me!

-Me!

0:13:130:13:16

Can I have some more tomato please?

0:13:170:13:19

Why don't you try making some burgers or vegetable kebabs

0:13:190:13:23

for a barbecue this summer?

0:13:230:13:25

Storm and I had an amazing time today. Did you enjoy it too?
