It's my special magician's name.

Are you and Hop doing magic tricks?

I want to, Driver Dan, but Hip won't let me.

Only The Great Hipini can do magic

and my marvellous magic show is about to begin.

Now, I will make this carrot disappear.

I say the magic words -

And now it will reappear.

I can make a carrot disappear, too.

Good trick, Hop.

-But it's not a proper magic trick.

For my next trick, I will make something even bigger disappear.

But I will need a helper.

How about it, Great Hipini? Hop is really keen to join in.

As you can see, the Magic Cabinet is completely empty.

Step into the Magic Cabinet, please, Hop.

Now The Great Hipini will make her reappear.

It's time for a story.

It might be about a magic show.

I think it'll be about hiding.

-Or clever tricks.

-Yeah!

-Hooray!

-Who's ready for a story, then?

We are, Driver Dan! Is there one about a magician?

Hmm, I was thinking maybe... Aha!

I know just the book.

What's wrong, Driver Dan?

The book has disappeared. Oh, no, here it is.

It was just hiding. Is everyone settled and ready to listen?

Yes, Driver Dan.

-And all of you, sitting comfy and ready to listen?

-I'm ready.

This story is called Leon The Lonely Chameleon.

-What's a chameleon?

-It's a lizard that can change

the colour of its skin to match what it's sitting on.

Why does it do that?

To hide from bigger creatures that may want to eat it.

-That sounds like a great trick.

-It's a very clever trick.

This story is by Kate Henderson and the pictures are by Serena Curmi.

Deep in the rainforest lived a little chameleon called Leon.

Leon was amazing. He could change the colour of his skin

to make himself look almost invisible.

-So big animals can't eat him. Right, Driver Dan?

-Yes, Hop.

It was lovely living in the rainforest but Leon was lonely,

so he decided to go on a journey to find a friend to play with.

Quite soon, Leon saw a monkey swinging from the trees.

"Hello, monkey, would you like to be my friend?"

"Who said that?", said the monkey.

"How can I be your friend if I can't see you?" And he swung off.

"Never mind," thought Leon, and he kept looking.

-I see him, there on the branch.

-Well done, Hip. You found him!

Next, he saw a parrot flying through the sky.

"Hello, parrot, would you be my friend?"

"Who said that?", squawked the parrot. "How can I be your friend

"if I can't see you?" And she flew off.

"Never mind", thought Leon, and he kept on looking.

But each time he saw someone new, the very same thing happened.

Leon called out to a lion, then a bumblebee, then a giraffe,

but none of them could see him and none of them became Leon's friend.

"It's no use", said Leon sadly.

"I'll never find a real friend of my own."

Just then, he heard a little voice say,

"Hello, would you like to be my friend?"

Leon couldn't see anyone.

"How can I be your friend if I can't see you?", said Leon.

"I'm over here", said the voice,

which seemed to come from a beautiful flower.

As Leon looked closer he saw...

another chameleon!

"My name is Leona", said the lovely chameleon, looking up at Leon.

In no time at all, they were the best of friends.

Leon and Leona played together all day long in the rainforest.

Their favourite game was hide-and-seek!

-The end.

-That was a very happy ending.

I liked Leon and Leona.

Chameleons are very clever to hide so well.

Now it's your turn. Which bit did you like best?

Look at the lovely rain forest.

-I'm a chameleon!

-I'm hiding like Leon.

-Squawk!

-I'm being a parrot.

-Squawk!

-I'm flapping about.

-Roar!

-Now I'm a big furry lion.

-I'm being a giraffe.

-With a really long neck.

-I can't see Leon anywhere.

-Look, over there!
