-Story Time!

This story is called Doug, the Cleverest Dog in the World.

It was written by Diane and Christian Fox

and the pictures are by Christian Fox.

I have a dog. His name is Doug.

And Doug is the cleverest dog in the world.

Doug is so clever, he can do really long tricky sums.

He likes reading books with very big words in them.

And he's good at computer games. He's always doing things like that.

-Wow! A dog who's good at computer games! Amazing!

-Ha-ha!

But most of all, Doug likes me. And his dish

and his basket and his squeaky toy.

One day, a woman with a camera arrived.

She said, "Doug, you're the cleverest dog I've ever seen.

"I'm going to put your picture on the cover of every magazine."

And she did. And soon a man arrived, who said,

"Doug, I saw your picture in a magazine.

"I'm going to make you a film star."

And he did. Not long after, the Queen of the World arrived.

She said, "Doug, I've seen all your films and I love you.

"I'm going to take you to my royal palace to be my royal dog."

So Doug became the Royal Dog of the World.

And he and the Queen, the woman with the camera

and the man who made films

all lived in a huge castle with soldiers and flags.

They travelled in very long cars, had their own aeroplane

and wore sunglasses all the time.

Doug ate from a golden dish.

He slept in a golden basket and he had a golden squeaky toy.

But one day, Doug started to feel sad.

-I wonder why he's sad.

-We'll see.

So he told everyone he was going home.

The Queen of the World went off in a huff, the man who made films

stamped his feet and the woman with the camera burst into tears.

But Doug came home to me.

And his old dish. And his old basket. And his old squeaky toy.

Because he's MY dog. He's always doing things like that.

-The end. Well, did you enjoy that story?

-Oh, yes.

They gave the dog lots of things, but all he wanted was his friend.

That's because a best friend is the best thing in the world.

-Isn't that right, Hop?

-Yes.
