Episode 4 Escape from Scorpion Island

Last time, the girls faced a meltdown in Under Fire...

Lower the cannon. It's not going to reach! Oh...

Now, it's the boys' turn to battle against the island...

Jordan, remember - put it in, don't throw it!

..watched by the fiercely competitive girls.

The pressure's on them, because

they know how many they've got to get and they're really pressurised.

Only one team can win the island treasure.

It's a battle of boys versus girls.

This...is Scorpion Island.

Welcome to Escape From Scorpion Island - an island like no other.

You join us on day two as ten adventurers are battling it out

in two teams of boys and girls,

in a bid to escape the island on their final day.

We're still waiting to see

who's going to win today's island treasure.

Scorpion Island relishes in its splendid isolation,

and uses its natural world as its impenetrable defence system.

The island is teeming with life, its precious treasure.

In recent times, an adventurer came from far across the seas.

He was a fortune hunter,

whose mission it was to plunder the island of its legendary treasure.

He took on the island's challenges and succeeded -

but when he failed in his final escape, the furious island

mischievously captured the fortune hunter's spirit, and locked it away.

ANGUISHED SCREAM

Now, ten new adventurers must follow the path he created.

Their mission - to escape the island.

They must battle it out in terrifying challenges,

and the victors will win an island treasure.

The more that they win,

the greater advantage they will have in the final race to escape.

Earlier, the girls played the first round of the Island Challenge,

but before the boys take part in round two,

they're psyching themselves up at the fortune hunter's river camp

and coming up with a team chant.

Boys, boys...

Boys, boys, we make lots of noise...

We're trying to work on it a bit, trying to make it better if we can,

but at the moment it doesn't seem to be going right.

We are the boys, who make lots of noise...

We are the boys, who make lots of noise, we like our toys...

We are the best, better than the rest.

The "toys" bit, let's take it out. Cos we sound like children.

Meanwhile, the girls have returned to tree camp,

and have got their chant together.

THEY CHANT: Five, six, seven, eight.

We will beat the boys throughout, so those boys better watch out.

Our team chant is really good -

it's short, snappy, and actually says something about our team.

The boys are still trying to come up with THEIR rhyme...

-Boys forever...

-We stick together!

Boys forever, we stick together...

Shall we punch our fists, like - "Boys..."

Boys forever, we'll stick together!

Yeah. That's quite cool. OK, shall we do that?

ALL: Boys forever, we'll stick together!

The super-focused girls are already onto their team motto.

I think for a team pledge, we should do "Expect the unexpected",

-because girls are really random, I think.

-Yeah.

"Expect the unexpected."

We chose the motto "Expect the unexpected" because

we never know what's going to happen on the island

and what challenge we're going to face.

So we really have to be prepared for anything that's going to come.

ALL: Expect the unexpected!

THEY LAUGH

It seems the boys have given up completely -

but HAVE found a new team-mate.

What shall we name him?

-Spikey...

-Spike! Spike.

Spikey. Our new arrival.

The newest member to the boys' club.

Next up, it's the boys.

That's James,

Zach, Dylan,

Peter, and today's captain, Jordan.

Because the boys won the memory trial, they had the choice of

taking on the Island Challenge, Under Fire, first or second.

They opted to make the girls go first AGAIN.

Team captain, Jordan, I've just got one question for you.

Do you guys want to go first or second at the Island Challenge?

-Second.

-Second it is.

So they watched while the girls' captain, Jeremy,

did what Jordan will have to do in the boys' turn -

hanging above the amazing Venom Cascade,

trying to use a net to catch balls shot by team members

at a cannon ten metres below.

The boys didn't sound confident the girls would do well.

I don't think they'll get any.

And seeing some of Eleanor and Natty's early shots

go way over Jeremy, gave them some good ideas.

Look at where the cannon's facing -

it's not shooting that way, it's shooting higher than the cannon.

So you need to direct it lower than it actually is.

Oh, I have a really good idea! We should shoot low

so that we always can keep the net down.

Jeremy did make seven impressive catches,

but then it became clear that another part of this challenge

was Khadie and Lizzie having to haul her across

to deliver the ball into the collection tub.

So you've got to go fast in and out,

that's what's taking them the most time.

And the boys seemed certain they'd spotted at least one

time-saving tactic.

I think you should take the ball out of the net before you get to it.

Do what she's doing - she's putting her hand in to get the ball

before she gets there.

While putting the balls into the collection tub,

disaster struck Jeremy - as not once but twice

she dropped the balls in too hard, causing them to bounce back out.

Oh, there they are! See, it takes a long time for them to pull in.

As only the balls in the tub at the end of their turn counted,

this meant the girls' final score was five,

and having watched the girls' turn, the boys seemed sure

they knew what the key issues were.

The main thing is probably getting the aim right.

Yeah. And communication.

Cos everything can change during the game.

The question is, if things DO change during the game,

can the boys keep focused to beat the girls' score

of five balls in the tub, or match it in a quicker time?

You just know they're going to go all out to win,

and bag the latest island treasure, the cactus.

This is going to be an awesome second round.

So the boys are in position. Captain Jordan over the cascades,

Dilhan and Peter on the ropes, and James and Zach at the cannon.

Ready to load balls one at a time, prod them into place

and fire them up at their net.

So the girls got an impressive five balls in round one,

but will the boys keep up their winning streak and do any better?

It's time to find out.

-Guys, are you ready?

-Ready!

In three, two, one...

Off you go!

And they're away.

Zach's loading in their first ball.

Dilhan and Peter are adjusting Jordan's position.

And here it goes... No!

Oh, way to high. They're going to have to correct that.

Here they go again... Oooh, that was close.

Keep it there!

Jordan wants them to aim the same again.

And they have... And it's... Oh!

They almost got one, it was so close but wrong side of the netting.

None of the aspects of this game are easy.

Pulling will be testing, aiming is tricky...

and catching is ultra tough.

But the boys have managed to get on target really quickly

and this was their closest yet.

Centimetres higher, and Jordan would definitely have caught it -

but as it is, the ball smacks into the bottom of his net.

Maybe next time?

Put it down all the way, and then go up.

Aiming again... Far too high! No catch there.

Dilhan and Peter waiting on the sidelines,

but they can't do anything until a ball is in the net.

Jordan's repeating a tactic Dilhan came up with

while the boys were watching the girls' turn -

keep aiming it low.

But they're not doing it, that was too high again.

The pressure's on them, because they know how many

they've got to get and they're really pressurised.

Oh, no!

This was another great shot from James and Zach,

and Jordan was unlucky not to get it.

He twists the net to go for a swipe catch,

but hits the ball with the handle and accidentally bats it away.

While they were watching the girls, the boys thought this challenge

looked easy - but it seems to be proving tougher than they expected.

Still, if they can keep their aim and concentration,

they must get a catch soon.

Still no balls for the guys.

James and Zach don't seem to be listening to Jordan -

or perhaps they aren't in control of the cannon yet.

Khadie's looking nervous - but the more the boys miss,

the less chance they have of beating the girls' score of five.

Oh, and he's caught it!

Oh, no. That was amazing!

Jordan reacts so swiftly here, catching the ball between his legs.

It's impressive, but he doesn't transfer it into the net

before it drops down onto the cascades.

Well, it's a confidence booster if nothing else.

Oh - and that one's bounced up into Jordan!

They're going again...

And yes!

They've got one tennis ball. This could be quite close.

Now, Dilhan and Peter have to get him across.

Jordan, remember - put it in, don't throw it!

Will he learn from Jeremy's mistake, and place it gently in the bucket?

Oh, no - it's fallen out! He's done exactly the same thing as Jeremy!

So, James and Zach's aim is perfect this time,

straight into Jordan's lowered net.

And Dilhan and Peter haul him across really quickly.

Natty seems worried - but perhaps she needn't be,

as Jordan makes exactly the same mistake as Jeremy did

in the girls' turn. He drops the ball in too firmly,

causing it to bounce straight back out again.

Bad news - so at just over three minutes in,

the boys have yet to score.

Keep going! You can do it.

The boys really need to hurry now to get Jordan back in position.

Keep going!

Stop...!

As we saw in the last round, communication is key here.

Oh, but this looks like a communication breakdown.

Zach and James have just fired at Jordan's back.

Oh, and he's spinning himself back around.

Keep it down...

Put it up more!

This has been quite a few tennis balls now,

they haven't got one in the bucket. Not good.

And even worse is that Jordan's spun around AGAIN,

so he's not even facing the cannon.

Well, Jordan was ready for the mental test of the memory trial

but is the sheer physicality of the Island Challenge too much for him?

He gets so far out of position,

that for a while, he can't see the balls coming at him

and so making catches is impossible.

Then, just when he manages to wriggle back into place,

Zach and James shoot one straight at him!

It can't be good for his concentration

and his situation definitely looks bad for the boys.

With just less than half their time gone,

they're still on zero.

Come on, Jordan!

Oh, that was a good shot! They've got one in the net.

Now, can they get one in the tub too?

Dilhan and Peter are hauling him across.

Yes!

So they've got one in the bucket, that's good news.

Now they need four more, just to even the girls' score.

Zach and James shoot straight into Jordan's lowered net again,

and Dilhan and Peter get him to the tub really quickly,

but it's Jordan himself who comes up with a clever new tactic.

He uses the rope to lift the tub up,

so he can drop the ball in really gently.

So, Jeremy must now be wishing she thought to try this

oh-so-careful approach.

Still, the girls did get five in, so the boys have got a lot to do.

Oh, that was so close. It hit the rim of the net.

The boys were unlucky not to get a catch here.

It just bounces away - but they need more than luck now.

They need to get totally focused to get anywhere near

matching the girls' score.

-Oh, yes!

-They've another tennis ball in there.

This could go to the wire.

And it's in.

OK, that's two tennis balls in the bucket.

They need three more to tie and four more to win.

This is more like it, good aim, a careful catch,

speedy hauling and perhaps most importantly, careful placement.

Can they keep it up?

Come on boys, a little bit more this way.

I noticed the boys have developed an interesting technique,

pushing the cannon down and up at the last minute.

They've got another tennis ball now.

This will be the third one, this is getting close.

But with only three minutes left on the clock

they've still got a lot of work to do.

Keep pulling.

Yes, it's in.

That's three tennis balls in there - they need two more to tie,

three more to win.

And, after a very slow start,

it's beginning to feel that

they might actually have a chance of winning.

This is great stuff - but the question is,

can they move quickly enough to claw it back?

They're still wasting time.

This is good, we have a pretty good chance.

They're either getting it too high or too low, it has to be perfect.

The girls are starting to sound a bit defensive.

It must be so frustrating waiting to see if...

Oooh!

That was another quality catch -

but Jordan seems to be having trouble getting the ball out of the net.

Worrying stuff.

Come on, Jordan!

This could be a disaster.

Don't drop...

-He's got it...

-Put it in!

..and it's in.

This was a real rollercoaster ride of emotions -

a terrific catch and fast transfer, followed by an awful few seconds

when it seemed Jordan was never going to get the ball...

and then finally he drops their fourth one in.

Now, there's just over two minutes left -

is it enough for them to get two more catches, and the win?

Oh, that was so close!

It was the wrong side of the netting.

That was too HIGH!

But that was really close again.

-They wasted time.

-They need two more to win.

Speed IS an issue here, but they also need to keep their composure.

Well, Jordan doesn't look very composed.

He nearly caught that one on the rebound but that one's

-gone behind him.

-They have got another one in the net.

But they have to deliver it too and they are really running short

of time now. This is so tense.

There is one minute left.

He's got it in!

Incredible... In the last minute of their turn,

the boys have matched the girls' score of five.

Now, can they possibly get one more in

in the dying seconds of the game?

So it's neck and neck. They need one more tennis ball, and they've won.

That's far too high...

Yes!

JOHNY STARTS COUNTING DOWN

Time is up!

THEY CHEER

Time is up - and I've got that down as a tie.

That was so close,

because Jordan got a ball in the net...

but, he didn't get it in the bucket.

Exciting stuff!

If the boys had just had a few seconds longer,

they would surely have got their sixth ball in,

but, as it is, they ended up on five, the same as the girls.

So, what do the teams feel about all this?

-I think it went good.

-I think we did really good -

I even think we've beat the girls.

Oh... I feel so happy because it's a tie, and so...

I don't know who's going to win

but I'm really happy that we at least tied with them.

Oh, we did our best. I think that's as good as we could get,

we can't get any better than that. Everyone tried their hardest.

If Dilhan and Peter could have pulled a little bit faster...

I'm not saying that they weren't great -

they were really great, they were pulling me -

but if they had gone a little bit faster, we would have been able to

win that, hands down.

Well, Jordan, this was a challenge packed with "what ifs".

What if either team had got their aim in quicker?

And, what if balls hadn't bounced out of the collection tubs

or off the nets?

The way things turned out, it was really close.

Both team captains pulled off some solid catches,

and though there were some moments when communication broke down,

the girls AND the boys both delivered impressive performances.

The girls did make one more catch than the boys,

but also had one more ball bounce out -

while the boys were seconds away from getting their sixth ball in

so both teams ended up with final scores of five.

Well, the big question is, which team won?

Well, it all came down to the clock,

and who got their fifth ball into the tub quicker.

The girls did it at nine minutes and 22 seconds,

but the boys did it at nine minutes and THREE seconds.

And so, by the very narrowest of margins, they are the victors,

and will take the latest island treasure - the cactus.

While they wait to be summoned to the Island Fire,

the boys don't know if they've won or lost.

Like my mum would always say, if you win, you win - so that's brilliant -

and if you lose...

-Doesn't matter. You learn for next time.

-You learn something from it.

We've always got loads more days to try and...

And never put yourself down when you lose, or anything.

Don't take yourself too far,

take yourself responsible for everything...

So if we do lose the game...

And only give out criticism that you could take personally - like,

I couldn't take you saying to me, "You're rubbish",

so I'm not going to call you and say you were rubbish.

Even though you weren't rubbish. Nobody was rubbish.

It might hurt the person's feelings if you say,

"Well you were rubbish, I reckon you could have done better."

-Think how

-you

-would think.

I think if you wanted to say, "I think you could have done better",

say, "Next time, learn from this experience

"and try a little bit harder."

Break them down gently.

Don't just go... straight into the fact.

But we're not going to have to do that

-cos I'm sure everybody in this team is going to give it 110%.

-Yeah.

-ALL:

The sun sets after a merciless day.

The girls sit beside one of the

fortune hunter's relics, and as they wait for the results of the Island

Challenge, they all think they could have done a little better.

There was a bit of a communication breakdown between

the people shooting from

the cannon and the people below me to the right.

They weren't really talking much so,

if we got that fixed, maybe we would have done better.

Me and Lizzie were

pulling along Jeremy.

Eleanor and Natty

were trying to shoot the balls to Jeremy, and they weren't listening

cos we were trying to tell them to lift up a bit.

If we do win, we still have to focus on it but especially if we don't win

that's probably the reason why we are really going to have to talk

about it for the next challenge.

The issues with the communication

was actually not what we expected

because, when Jeremy was talking to Natty and Eleanor

that was good communication, with hand signals and things...

But then Khadie and I weren't, like,

so much involved with the communications - we would try and say

"The arm, move down the barrel", or...

"We need to move you a bit more, Jeremy."

With me being able to lip-read I think could have been helpful,

because my team-mate down on the pontoon with me

might not have heard what they said to her,

I would have been able to tell them.

THEY SHOUT INSTRUCTIONS

If we didn't win this challenge, I would feel like

I let my team down, because all this narrows down to the team captain,

and me being captain I really want my team to do well and I want them

to have full trust in me.

So, if we didn't win the challenge, I would be quite gutted and

I would feel like it's my fault.

Then again, I would also like to look into the future and say,

never mind, we can still catch up

cos this is only like, the second challenge.

Only one team has won today's Island Challenge,

and the island will reveal which team that is, at the Island Fire.

The only place where the

island communicates directly with the boys and the girls.

Welcome to the Island Fire. This is where all will be revealed about your

mission and most importantly where the island communicates with you.

Girls, how did you find your second day on the island?

Awesome! Brilliant.

-What was so good about it?

-It was fun.

-Drawing with the boys.

Drawing with the boys?! We'll find out a little bit about that later.

-Guys, how did you find your time?

-Immense, it was a bit patchy in

-some places though.

-What do you mean patchy?

There were a few nervous bits, and especially from me and James trying

to shoot the cannon but Jordan made up for those.

Well, I'm just guessing here but I bet you are all itching to find out

who has won the Island Challenge as well as the island treasure,

the second one, which is the cactus.

Now, today you took part in the challenge Under Fire.

Only the island knows who the winner is.

As you guys know, both teams collected five balls each

but I can reveal that one team collected the fifth ball

in their bucket quicker than the other.

that beat the island in Under Fire was...

Guys, well done, congratulations again.

One more thing I need you to do

for me though, you know the drill, only one of you can win this cactus

which represent survival in extreme conditions.

Every night at the Island Fire, only one adventurer from the winning team

can be awarded the treasure.

The island is keeping the reason why a closely guarded secret.

Because he was our captain today and

he captained us well and he also did the main part of the challenge.

He's the one that was catching all the balls and doing everything right.

Jordan, lots of praise being heaped on you. How does that feel?

-Pretty honoured.

-Good, well I hope you got your muscles ready

because I am about to give you the second island treasure for

being the most valued adventurer. Well done.

What an exciting day it's been for both of our teams.

The boys are well in the lead, with two island treasures.

But there are loads more island treasures out there

but who is going to win the next one - the boys or the girls?
