Hi, I'm Katy B and this is Hit The Stage

0:00:030:00:05

and I'm going to be taking a group of budding musicians

0:00:050:00:08

and giving them the chance to perform

0:00:080:00:10

on the biggest stages we can find.

0:00:100:00:11

MUSIC: "This Is What It Feels Like" by Armin van Buuren

0:00:110:00:15

Budding DJs go from playing their mum and dad's parties

0:00:160:00:20

to rocking the decks in major festivals,

0:00:200:00:22

singers from singing hymns in church to performing to sell-out crowds,

0:00:220:00:27

and song writers from sharing their songs with no-one

0:00:270:00:31

to playing to an audience of thousands!

0:00:310:00:34

Are you ready to hit the stage? We are!

0:00:340:00:36

THEY CHEER

0:00:360:00:38

# I keep on moving with the lights on

0:00:440:00:47

# So come on, baby... #

0:00:470:00:49

'I've been lucky enough to make a life

0:00:490:00:51

'out of doing something that I love - singing and performing.

0:00:510:00:53

'You may even know some of my hit singles.'

0:00:530:00:56

And now I'm in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

0:01:000:01:03

Why am I here? Well, it's simple. This year the city is

0:01:030:01:06

the UK's first ever City Of Culture,

0:01:060:01:08

which means there's loads of massive music events

0:01:080:01:11

happening all year round,

0:01:110:01:13

and I'm going to help some local kids to hit the stage.

0:01:130:01:16

'I won't be doing it alone,

0:01:200:01:21

'I've got two local musicians to help me out

0:01:210:01:24

'when I'm not around.

0:01:240:01:25

'Glenn, who loves hitting the stage himself

0:01:250:01:27

'when he's rocking out with his band.'

0:01:270:01:29

'The spark of creativity that they have'

0:01:290:01:31

reignites the spark that you have,

0:01:310:01:33

so I'm really looking forward to the eight months

0:01:330:01:35

and seeing where this is going to go.

0:01:350:01:37

D major...

0:01:370:01:38

'And Jenny, who likes to take things a bit more slowly

0:01:380:01:41

'when she's teaching students how to play the harp or sing.'

0:01:410:01:44

'It's really inspiring to think'

0:01:440:01:46

that these kids really have so much potential

0:01:460:01:48

so I'm really, really excited to see what they're going to come up with.

0:01:480:01:51

'I can't wait to get out there and meet them all. First up is Hannah.'

0:01:530:01:57

MUSIC: "I Don't Care" by Icona Pop

0:01:570:01:59

'When it comes to music, this girl really gives it some.

0:02:010:02:04

'She's got a big personality with such a big talent to match.'

0:02:040:02:08

I'm lovin' life.

0:02:080:02:11

# California girls We're unforgettable... #

0:02:130:02:16

'She lives for music.

0:02:160:02:17

'Up until now, she's been playing and performing covers -

0:02:170:02:20

'that means doing her own versions

0:02:200:02:22

'of songs that other people have written.

0:02:220:02:25

'But she has just started writing her own songs...'

0:02:250:02:28

'But while Hannah looks to have all the confidence in the world,

0:02:290:02:33

'there is one thing she just can't face.

0:02:330:02:35

I always think to play me own song, it's a bit of a risk it's...

0:02:350:02:39

It's always a bit of a risk, like,

0:02:390:02:40

are they going to like it, are they going to, you know...

0:02:400:02:43

Are they going to hate it?

0:02:430:02:45

I'm really excited to meet Hannah,

0:02:490:02:51

because apparently she's a brilliant song writer,

0:02:510:02:54

and I love lyrics, I love storytelling,

0:02:540:02:56

so I'm hoping that she sings them for me.

0:02:560:02:58

# I don't care, I love it

0:02:580:03:01

# I don't care... #

0:03:010:03:03

-Hello.

-How are you doing?

0:03:030:03:06

-Oh, thank you very much.

-I'm Hannah's mother

0:03:060:03:08

-Hi, Hannah.

-Hello.

0:03:080:03:10

I've heard so much about you!

0:03:110:03:13

It's just in here...

0:03:130:03:15

Oh, wow, cool.

0:03:160:03:18

Who's this guy with the guitar?

0:03:180:03:20

That's my boyfriend... But it's, like, been scrunched up

0:03:200:03:22

every time we fight I scrunch it up and throw it under me bed

0:03:220:03:24

and then when we make up then I stick it back up again!

0:03:240:03:27

THEY LAUGH

0:03:270:03:29

So I heard that you only started showing people your songs

0:03:290:03:32

not too long ago? Is that right?

0:03:320:03:35

Um, yeah that's... Yep.

0:03:350:03:37

Yep. Would I be able to hear one of your songs?

0:03:370:03:39

-Ummm...

-Please...

0:03:390:03:42

Go on, why don't' you go off and show Katy some of your...

0:03:420:03:45

-Oh...yeah

-Yeah?

0:03:450:03:46

-Yeah.

-Yeah!

0:03:460:03:48

OK... All right.

0:03:490:03:51

'Up until now the only people who've heard Hannah's songs

0:03:540:03:58

'have been the pop stars on her walls,

0:03:580:04:00

'but I think that if she can find the courage

0:04:000:04:02

'to start performing her own work in public

0:04:020:04:05

'it could be brilliant for her confidence.'

0:04:050:04:07

So, it's so mad to have you like in my room,

0:04:070:04:09

because, like, I've all your songs on my phone

0:04:090:04:13

and, like, it's just mad that you're, like, sitting here.

0:04:130:04:17

Well, hopefully I'll have some of your songs on my phone soon.

0:04:170:04:20

This is just really crazy, like...

0:04:200:04:22

So, what's this song called, then?

0:04:220:04:24

My...Musical Autobiography... So...

0:04:240:04:27

# Hi, I'm Hannah I can't sing that well

0:04:350:04:40

# If you told me a secret I'd never tell

0:04:400:04:44

# Unless it was to

0:04:440:04:46

# One of my best friends

0:04:460:04:48

# Let's get off the subject

0:04:480:04:50

# Hi, when I'm all grown up

0:04:500:04:53

# I want to rock the stage

0:04:530:04:55

# I want to get older but never age

0:04:550:04:59

# And I've a sad obsession

0:04:590:05:01

# With the lazy-eyed man called Russell Howard

0:05:010:05:04

# Oh-oh-oh

0:05:040:05:06

# Imma put on a show

0:05:060:05:09

# To show you

0:05:100:05:13

# Me...

0:05:130:05:16

# Let you hear my musical autobiography

0:05:160:05:18

# Oh, I want to put on a show... #

0:05:180:05:22

Her song-writing is great and I love her lyrics,

0:05:220:05:24

she's really funny, she's got a lot to say

0:05:240:05:27

and you can really see her identity through her lyrics,

0:05:270:05:29

you know, this... That song couldn't be about anyone else,

0:05:290:05:32

it was about Hannah, and I'm glad that she picked that one to play me,

0:05:320:05:35

because it really kind of gave me a sense of who she is.

0:05:350:05:38

# Oh, oh, oh-oh... #

0:05:380:05:41

SHE CHEERS

0:05:430:05:45

That's amazing!

0:05:450:05:47

Thank you.

0:05:470:05:48

What an amazing song to hear everything about you.

0:05:480:05:50

That's, like, brilliant.

0:05:500:05:53

When did you write that song?

0:05:530:05:54

A couple of months ago. But I never really played it anywhere,

0:05:540:05:57

I just... I was just kind of restricted, just playing in me room.

0:05:570:06:00

Yeah.

0:06:000:06:02

I always just kind of played it, like, in here...

0:06:020:06:04

And how do you write your songs? Just get the chords going

0:06:040:06:07

and then do the words afterwards...?

0:06:070:06:09

I have, like, a melody in my head

0:06:090:06:11

and then just put lyrics to it, just...

0:06:110:06:13

Usually start with a melody first

0:06:130:06:15

and then you put the chords around it?

0:06:150:06:17

-Yeah.

-OK, that's cool.

0:06:170:06:19

'This girl could really go places

0:06:190:06:21

'and we've got some exciting plans for her...'

0:06:210:06:26

DUBSTEP MUSIC

0:06:260:06:29

Next up of our Hit The Stage kids is Shay.

0:06:310:06:34

When this 13-year-old kick-boxing fanatic

0:06:350:06:38

is not perfecting his roundhouse kick,

0:06:380:06:40

he's busy becoming the City of Derry's next superstar DJ.

0:06:400:06:44

When you're playing dance music for all the people

0:06:480:06:50

and they're dancing, it kind of makes you happy,

0:06:500:06:52

because you know you're providing the music and you're...

0:06:520:06:56

You're making them dance, and making them be happy.

0:06:560:06:58

He persuaded his mum to buy him all the latest DJ equipment

0:07:000:07:04

so he could start mixing tunes and playing gigs,

0:07:040:07:07

but mum Sinead didn't realise just how loud DJs like to play.

0:07:070:07:12

Shay! Can you turn that music down! I can't have a cup of tea in peace!

0:07:140:07:18

He's just raring to get out of the bedroom

0:07:230:07:25

and get an audience up on its feet dancing.

0:07:250:07:28

So far, he's played birthday parties, family events,

0:07:280:07:31

and his local community centre, but this DJ has big dreams.

0:07:310:07:35

In the future I would like to do something really big,

0:07:350:07:38

like a festival, or just play in a really big club.

0:07:380:07:41

Today he's gearing up for his biggest gig to date,

0:07:410:07:45

supporting local dance-music legends Japanese Popstars

0:07:450:07:48

at one of Derry's best music venues, The Nerve Centre.

0:07:480:07:52

I'm impressed that Shay is already playing the best local venues,

0:07:530:07:56

but I'm even more impressed that he got this gig

0:07:560:07:59

by just going to the venue and asking.

0:07:590:08:01

It's true what they say, "If you don't ask, you don't get."

0:08:010:08:04

I was explaining to the man on the counter that I'm a DJ

0:08:050:08:09

and he said, "Would you like a gig?"

0:08:090:08:10

I said, "Aye." And the rest is history.

0:08:100:08:14

And now Shay has got his big gig, it needs big planning,

0:08:140:08:17

there could be up to 500 people at the event.

0:08:170:08:20

When you're DJing, you have to take a lot of things.

0:08:200:08:23

The few things that I like to do is make sure I have everything.

0:08:230:08:26

You know, list, check it - put it in me back pocket,

0:08:260:08:28

and when I'm leaving check it off again, make sure I have everything.

0:08:280:08:32

With everything listed and checked, it's show time.

0:08:320:08:35

DUBSTEP MUSIC

0:08:440:08:46

Shay is playing a blinding set,

0:08:500:08:53

the beats are right, the lights are perfect,

0:08:530:08:55

and the graphics are stunning,

0:08:550:08:57

but there's just one thing missing...

0:08:570:08:59

..a crowd to enjoy it.

0:09:030:09:05

I mean, the room, is like...

0:09:050:09:07

just looking into darkness, it puts you down a bit, kind of...

0:09:070:09:10

You do feel a bit less excited

0:09:100:09:11

when there's not a lot of people there.

0:09:110:09:14

I'm so disappointed for Shay,

0:09:140:09:17

it's such a shame that no-one was there to see him perform.

0:09:170:09:20

But he should know that dealing with knock-backs like this

0:09:200:09:24

is all part of learning how to succeed in music.

0:09:240:09:26

I remember gigs where I would play

0:09:260:09:28

and the only other people watching

0:09:280:09:30

were the other bands that were playing on the same night, so...!

0:09:300:09:34

You have to think of it sometimes as, like, good practice,

0:09:340:09:37

because you can think actually there's no pressure

0:09:370:09:40

but you're still in that environment, so by the time

0:09:400:09:43

people do get there, you're just, like, killing it.

0:09:430:09:45

'I'm going to make sure that next time Shay performs

0:09:470:09:50

'he'll have an audience to play to.'

0:09:500:09:52

Shay and Hannah are just two of the Hit The Stage group

0:09:550:09:58

that I'm going to be working with throughout the year.

0:09:580:10:00

We've got harp players,

0:10:000:10:02

fiddlers, pianists,

0:10:020:10:04

singers and drummers.

0:10:040:10:06

And Glenn and Jenny have already got the ball rolling.

0:10:060:10:10

So, I'm here at the Playhouse this morning,

0:10:100:10:12

to meet the kids for the first time as a group,

0:10:120:10:14

and I can't wait to hear them play their instruments.

0:10:140:10:18

MUSIC PLAYS

0:10:190:10:21

Hummm, I can hear them playing already...

0:10:210:10:23

Hi, guys. It's nice to meet you!

0:10:260:10:29

They don't know it yet

0:10:300:10:32

but I have plans for everyone to play together as a group,

0:10:320:10:34

but right now I just want to get to know them all a little bit better.

0:10:340:10:38

Ohhh!

0:10:440:10:46

So, what are you working on?

0:10:460:10:48

-We've been working on a duet together.

-Can I hear it?

-Yeah.

0:10:480:10:51

Oh, cool.

0:10:550:10:56

The spectrum is so wide, you know, which is brilliant,

0:11:010:11:03

because everyone's got their own identity and, um...

0:11:030:11:06

So that's really great

0:11:060:11:08

and everyone can kind of cheer each other on,

0:11:080:11:10

but at the same time it kind of makes my job difficult

0:11:100:11:12

cos I've got to kind of find a piece of music

0:11:120:11:15

where everyone can get involved and mix together.

0:11:150:11:18

So, I've just heard you all playing

0:11:190:11:21

and some of you have just started learning

0:11:210:11:23

and some of you have been playing for years,

0:11:230:11:25

but I just want to let you know that none of that matters

0:11:250:11:27

because these next couple of months

0:11:270:11:29

are all about giving you opportunities

0:11:290:11:31

that are going to blow your mind, inspire you,

0:11:310:11:33

and we're just going to have some fun from music.

0:11:330:11:35

Will you sing now, Katy?

0:11:370:11:39

-Ah! What do you want me to sing?

-Keep On Moving When The Lights Is On.

0:11:390:11:43

Yeah?

0:11:430:11:44

'I came here to listen to everyone else play,

0:11:440:11:47

'the last thing I was expecting to do was to have to perform myself!'

0:11:470:11:50

-Hi, girls.

-ALL: Hi, how are you?

0:11:500:11:52

Connor's just asked me to sing Lights On for you guys,

0:11:520:11:56

would you play the guitar for me, while I sing?

0:11:560:11:59

ALL: All right.

0:11:590:12:01

I've sung this song probably about 3,000 times in my life,

0:12:010:12:04

so, hopefully, I won't forget the words!

0:12:040:12:06

# Cos I will keep on going until they say so

0:12:110:12:14

# And even When they do

0:12:140:12:16

# It's so hard for me to go

0:12:160:12:18

# While them others at the cloakroom

0:12:180:12:19

# And some others out the door

0:12:190:12:21

# We can keep on going in the middle of the floor

0:12:210:12:24

# Yeah, I keep on moving with the lights on

0:12:240:12:28

# So come and play me just one more song

0:12:280:12:31

# I keep on moving with the lights on

0:12:310:12:35

# So you can't scare me with the lights on

0:12:350:12:38

# I keep on moving with the lights on

0:12:380:12:41

# So come and play me just one more song

0:12:410:12:45

# I keep on moving with the lights on

0:12:450:12:48

# So you can't scare me with the lights on

0:12:480:12:51

# Hey, yeah, yeah

0:12:530:12:59

# I keep on moving with the lights on... #

0:12:590:13:02

ALL: Whoo!

0:13:050:13:07

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:13:070:13:09

'Being put on the spot like that

0:13:090:13:10

'was as nerve-wrecking as any big gig I've played,

0:13:100:13:13

'but thankfully I had great talent backing me up on the guitar.'

0:13:130:13:16

'I've been thinking about Shay's talents too,

0:13:180:13:21

'and I think the time has come

0:13:210:13:22

'for him to know what it feels like to play at a big event.'

0:13:220:13:25

'But if Shay wants to make the big time,

0:13:280:13:30

'he is going to have to climb a mountain for real!'

0:13:300:13:34

-Told you you'd need Wellies.

-Yep.

0:13:340:13:36

'I've sent Glenn on a wet and windy mission

0:13:380:13:41

'to reveal news of a big opportunity.'

0:13:410:13:44

We're up a mountain, it's freezing,

0:13:440:13:47

it's windy and it's raining and muddy...

0:13:470:13:49

You're probably wondering why you're here?

0:13:490:13:52

-I am.

-Katy B's going to explain.

0:13:520:13:54

'Hey Shay, it's Katy. I'm stuck in the recording studio,

0:13:550:13:59

'but I'm taking a little bit of time out to tell you about your big gig.

0:13:590:14:04

'It might not look like much now,

0:14:040:14:06

'but in a few weeks, these muddy fields will be transformed

0:14:060:14:09

'into Northern Ireland's biggest music festival.

0:14:090:14:12

'All sorts of bands are going to be playing on massive stages,

0:14:120:14:15

'you are going to be up there with them,

0:14:150:14:17

'playing some of the biggest tunes too.

0:14:170:14:19

'I've managed to get you a slot

0:14:190:14:21

'just before a Radio 1 DJ Philly Taggart plays,

0:14:210:14:24

'so there's going to be a really big crowd.'

0:14:240:14:26

Looking out here, can you imagine

0:14:260:14:28

that this is going to be a massive festival?

0:14:280:14:30

Ah, no, I can just see a field.

0:14:300:14:33

'It means a lot that Katy B told me

0:14:330:14:34

'that I was going to be playing at a festival

0:14:340:14:36

'because it's something I've always dreamed about,

0:14:360:14:39

'and for the next four weeks

0:14:390:14:40

'all I'll be doing is just making me set, getting ready,

0:14:400:14:43

'getting prepared for everything. And hopefully it goes well.'

0:14:430:14:47

'Now, ever since Hannah played me her song

0:14:520:14:54

'it's been stuck in my head, it's so good.'

0:14:540:14:56

'But if she wants to fulfil her potential,

0:14:590:15:01

'she'll have to get out there

0:15:010:15:02

'and get used to other people listening to her own songs.'

0:15:020:15:06

'As a starting point,

0:15:080:15:09

'I've organised for her to be a support act at a local gig.

0:15:090:15:13

'If this goes well,

0:15:130:15:14

'there's no telling where she could be playing next!'

0:15:140:15:16

So, how do you feel about that?

0:15:160:15:19

Really excited, but, like, nervous.

0:15:190:15:21

I kind of feel like I'm going to melt.

0:15:210:15:24

So hope... Roughly how many songs are we talking about here?

0:15:240:15:27

-HE EXHALES

-I'd say about three.

0:15:270:15:29

Three. And are they all originals or...?

0:15:290:15:31

-All original.

-Oh!

-I don't know what you're so afraid of,

0:15:310:15:34

playing your songs in front of people.

0:15:340:15:36

It's... It's own original stuff and if, you know...

0:15:360:15:39

If somebody was to turn round and say, "That's not good,"

0:15:390:15:42

I'd be really... I'd be really hurt.

0:15:420:15:43

'Hannah's got a lot to think about,

0:15:430:15:45

'but if you fancy having a crack at writing a song yourself,

0:15:450:15:48

'here are some top tips.'

0:15:480:15:50

Lyrics are, majority of the time... Are the last things to be put down.

0:16:010:16:05

And the last things that are going to be finished usually.

0:16:050:16:08

We all sit down and discuss... we play each other little snippets

0:16:080:16:11

and we kind of work through them, which ones we like

0:16:110:16:13

and which ones we can all be excited about.

0:16:130:16:17

Usually, we will record it and then we will...

0:16:170:16:20

then put the vocals on top of it.

0:16:200:16:22

The best way to write a song is to write from the heart.

0:16:270:16:30

Always write from true-life experiences.

0:16:300:16:33

But everyone's different,

0:16:330:16:34

everyone likes to write songs about different things.

0:16:340:16:36

Things'll come, you'll experience something,

0:16:360:16:38

you'll get your heart broken, or walk down the street

0:16:380:16:41

and you'll see something happening, it will inspire you in some way.

0:16:410:16:44

You'll hear a new band or a new song...

0:16:440:16:45

Something will come along,

0:16:450:16:46

as long as you keep yourself surrounded by music,

0:16:460:16:50

then songs will always come, do you know what I mean?

0:16:500:16:52

It's an exciting morning in Shay's house,

0:17:170:17:19

details of the Glasgowbury Festival

0:17:190:17:21

have been published in a national newspaper

0:17:210:17:24

and not only will he find out what time he's on,

0:17:240:17:26

he'll be able to find out just how long he'll be playing for.

0:17:260:17:29

So, I'm hoping for a half-an-hour set, that would be the best,

0:17:290:17:33

I don't think they would give me any time over that.

0:17:330:17:36

Here we are. So I'm on for an hour.

0:17:410:17:43

And I'm on at half seven to half eight, so that's...

0:17:430:17:46

That's brilliant. Wasn't expecting to be that late,

0:17:460:17:48

or have that amount of time to play,

0:17:480:17:50

So that's... That's... I'm going to enjoy that.

0:17:500:17:54

I've no doubts about Shay's ability,

0:17:560:17:59

but he's got a big challenge ahead.

0:17:590:18:00

He should go straight to the top for a helping hand.

0:18:000:18:04

Shay is headed for London,

0:18:050:18:06

where I've arranged for him to meet Radio 1's very own Scott Mills.

0:18:060:18:11

Ah, it's a bit scary on trains,

0:18:130:18:14

it's like you're looking at something,

0:18:140:18:16

some trees or something, and just... Bam!

0:18:160:18:18

It's the first time

0:18:220:18:23

Shay has ever headed for the bright lights of the big city,

0:18:230:18:26

which makes it an adventure in itself!

0:18:260:18:28

I'm glad to get out of the Tube, it's a bit scary!

0:18:310:18:34

I didn't expect to see the actual red buses, or the...

0:18:380:18:41

black taxis. I thought that was just like a stereotype.

0:18:410:18:44

'Scott Mills is a DJing legend,

0:18:500:18:52

'he's done it all - from hosting his own Radio 1 show,

0:18:520:18:55

'to performing to thousands at festivals all over the world.'

0:18:550:18:59

He's a proper DJ.

0:18:590:19:01

'Great intro, Shay.'

0:19:010:19:03

Like, beat matching and everything!

0:19:030:19:05

-Oh, no. I can't even do that!

-I said that!

0:19:050:19:08

Oh, no. I've got to watch my back!

0:19:080:19:11

LAUGHTER

0:19:110:19:12

'Shay settles in to hear a bit of Scott's show

0:19:120:19:15

'before quizzing him on how to handle a festival crowd.'

0:19:150:19:17

How do you feel about DJing in front of a crowd?

0:19:190:19:22

Is it scary?

0:19:220:19:23

I used to really, really get scared,

0:19:230:19:26

but, um, the more you do it, the less scared you become

0:19:260:19:29

and it's actually really exciting.

0:19:290:19:32

Does it scare you?

0:19:320:19:33

Um...

0:19:330:19:35

sort of.

0:19:350:19:36

I think the adrenaline of when you get out there

0:19:360:19:38

and you see all those people, initially it will be scary,

0:19:380:19:41

but once you've started I think you'll be fine.

0:19:410:19:43

They're all there to have a good time,

0:19:430:19:45

so, you know, they're... It's going to be great, it's going to be fine.

0:19:450:19:48

'That's great advice from Scott,

0:19:480:19:50

'time for Shay to start preparing his festival set.'

0:19:500:19:53

It's a very skilled job.

0:19:570:19:58

He chooses the tracks

0:19:580:19:59

that he thinks will attract a crowd and keep them dancing.

0:19:590:20:03

He has to work out

0:20:030:20:04

what song is going to flow effortlessly into a another

0:20:040:20:07

by matching the beats in the song,

0:20:070:20:10

or the BPM as the DJs call it.

0:20:100:20:12

A set list is just completely different from a play list

0:20:120:20:15

on something like iTunes.

0:20:150:20:16

That's what most people think it is.

0:20:160:20:18

The music I make is very technical.

0:20:180:20:20

Not content with just picking the best tunes

0:20:200:20:22

and mixing them into each other,

0:20:220:20:24

Shay is able to add his own musical compositions,

0:20:240:20:27

which help improve his set.

0:20:270:20:28

There's a lot of work that I have to do before I'm happy with it -

0:20:280:20:31

and if you listen to it together with everything else...

0:20:310:20:35

HEAVY BEAT PLAYS

0:20:360:20:38

So, that's the kicking under the song. This is the kick you use...

0:20:380:20:42

I'm thinking about changing it.

0:20:420:20:44

At the touch of a button,

0:20:440:20:45

Shay can call upon a full orchestra of musical instruments

0:20:450:20:49

to enhance the sound of the tracks he's picked.

0:20:490:20:51

So, I'm thinking of this pattern, just simple. Just playing in.

0:20:530:20:58

So, usually I just play around with the drum patterns.

0:20:590:21:02

DRUMBEAT PLAYS

0:21:020:21:05

Just going to loop it to see if it sounds all right.

0:21:060:21:09

That sounds better.

0:21:110:21:13

Sounds better than just a plain four-four kick.

0:21:140:21:17

After two short weeks of practice,

0:21:210:21:23

it's the day of Hannah's first-ever gig.

0:21:230:21:26

But even budding pop stars have to go to school.

0:21:260:21:30

Haven't been able to concentrate at all today.

0:21:330:21:35

I'm really scared in case I forget the words or I forget...

0:21:350:21:38

If I, like, mess up the chords, if I, like... Just everything...

0:21:400:21:44

Just everything that could go wrong is going through my head.

0:21:450:21:50

When a girl is up against it, what she needs is her best friend.

0:21:520:21:57

-Catherine comes round to help with the preparations.

-Are you excited?

0:21:570:22:00

-A little bit.

-Top of the priority list is what to wear.

0:22:000:22:04

-Hannah?

-What?

0:22:040:22:06

You have half an hour to get ready.

0:22:060:22:08

Do you want Catherine to do your make-up?

0:22:080:22:10

She has half an hour before she has to go.

0:22:100:22:12

Please just wash your face,

0:22:120:22:14

put yourself into some pyjamas until you get your clothes on

0:22:140:22:18

-and do your make-up.

-OK.

0:22:180:22:20

Hannah is normally never, ever, ever, ever nervous, so it's kind of weird.

0:22:250:22:30

I've looked in the spare room, I've looked in the drawers,

0:22:320:22:35

I've looked in your wardrobe. Now, have you any idea where it could be?

0:22:350:22:39

Oh, look!

0:22:390:22:41

You see, that skirt isn't suitable.

0:22:410:22:43

-It is suitable.

-No, it's too clingy.

0:22:430:22:46

-It isn't.

-It is too clingy.

0:22:460:22:47

-It's not too clingy.

-It is too clingy.

0:22:470:22:49

Are you going to listen to her?

0:22:490:22:51

Listen to your mother. For once.

0:22:510:22:53

Oh she's... She's serious, Hannah

0:22:530:22:55

-Oh, dear, look who's here(!)

-BOTH: Ooooooo.

0:22:550:22:58

-I'm going to kill the two of you.

-Go away.

0:22:590:23:02

-SHE LAUGHS

-Hannah!

0:23:050:23:07

What!

0:23:070:23:08

Listen, it's time to go. Are you ready?

0:23:080:23:10

No!

0:23:100:23:12

As Hannah continues to wrestle with the all-important question

0:23:120:23:16

of "What's a girl to wear?", Shay's big day has arrived.

0:23:160:23:19

Glasgowbury is the largest

0:23:280:23:29

family-friendly festival in Northern Ireland,

0:23:290:23:32

with over 5,000 people of all ages

0:23:320:23:34

dancing to some of the biggest local acts,

0:23:340:23:36

and Shay is here to keep the party going.

0:23:360:23:39

He heads straight to the dance stage

0:23:430:23:45

to check out where he'll be taking to the decks

0:23:450:23:47

right before Radio 1's Phil Taggart plays a headline set.

0:23:470:23:51

Watching the other DJs at work,

0:23:560:23:58

and crucially, how the crowd are reacting to the music,

0:23:580:24:01

Shay makes a difficult decision.

0:24:010:24:03

I would say, looking at some of the DJs,

0:24:050:24:07

just by what they're playing and how the crowd's reacting,

0:24:070:24:10

-I want to change the set slightly.

-RECORD SCRATCHES

0:24:100:24:12

What did he say? Change his set list - at this stage?!

0:24:120:24:16

Let's rewind that!

0:24:160:24:17

-I want to change the set slightly.

-He really means it!

0:24:190:24:23

He is unpicking all of his hard preparation

0:24:230:24:25

and is going to start from scratch

0:24:250:24:26

to pick the tracks he hopes will attract and keep the biggest crowd.

0:24:260:24:30

I don't really want to be doin' it.

0:24:300:24:33

Because I have the set perfectly made

0:24:330:24:36

where I know what time they mix on and what time they mix out.

0:24:360:24:40

With just half an hour to go before he hits the stage,

0:24:400:24:44

he is taking a big risk!

0:24:440:24:45

It's all part of being a DJ, you have to take risks, in playing.

0:24:450:24:50

I'm just trying to know what everybody wants to hear.

0:24:500:24:53

Only a few months ago Shay was playing to an empty room,

0:24:570:25:00

but now he's preparing to play the biggest gig of his life.

0:25:000:25:03

The question is,

0:25:030:25:04

will he be able to make it up as he goes along, track by track?

0:25:040:25:08

ANNOUNCER: Ladies and gentlemen, your DJ for the evening -

0:25:110:25:15

give it up for Shay Whelan!

0:25:150:25:18

HEAVY DUBSTEP PLAYS

0:25:200:25:22

First track down, and the crowd are still dancing,

0:25:330:25:36

he's under pressure to keep this good start going.

0:25:360:25:38

It seems to be working,

0:25:470:25:48

Shay's last-minute music choices

0:25:480:25:50

are bringing more and more people to the dance stage.

0:25:500:25:53

It looks like he's really pulled it off. Go on, Shay!

0:25:540:25:57

Give it up for Shay Whelan!

0:26:100:26:11

CHEERING

0:26:110:26:13

Only 13. How sick was that?

0:26:140:26:18

Give it again, give it again, give it again!

0:26:180:26:21

This is the boy!

0:26:220:26:24

Never had a feeling like that before, so happy.

0:26:240:26:27

The set turned out perfect. Never been this happy in my life.

0:26:270:26:30

Ohhh!

0:26:300:26:32

'Having played a blinding set of brilliant dance music,

0:26:360:26:39

'Shay is finding out what it really feels like to be a superstar DJ.'

0:26:390:26:43

'When I came down I was signing autographs,

0:26:460:26:48

'getting hugs. Everything.

0:26:480:26:51

'Just everybody recognised me!

0:26:510:26:53

It's good to be recognised, that's what every DJ wants.

0:26:530:26:55

'It's what you need, just to be recognised.'

0:26:550:26:58

'But there's one part of being a superstar DJ

0:26:590:27:02

'that Shay is not entirely comfortable with.'

0:27:020:27:05

Go on, give her a kiss!

0:27:050:27:07

'And that even goes for his mum.'

0:27:100:27:12

'This was the best gig I've ever played,'

0:27:120:27:14

best type of day - sunny weather, outdoors.

0:27:140:27:17

Best reaction, best crowd - everything.

0:27:170:27:20

Next time on Hit The Stage,

0:27:250:27:27

will new-starter Evan hit the right notes?

0:27:270:27:29

HE SINGS

0:27:290:27:31

You probably pitched that a bit high.

0:27:310:27:33

-It was OK.

-No, it wasn't OK.

0:27:330:27:36

Will the group like my choice of song?

0:27:360:27:38

Everybody keeps saying that they sort of hear it all the time,

0:27:380:27:41

so it's played-out.

0:27:410:27:42

And will Hannah even make it to the stage...?

0:27:420:27:44

Everything bad that can happen I feel is going to happen...now.
