Hi, I'm Katy B and this is Hit The Stage | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
and I'm going to be taking a group of budding musicians | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
and giving them the chance to perform | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
on the biggest stages we can find. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:11
MUSIC: "This Is What It Feels Like" by Armin van Buuren | 0:00:11 | 0:00:15
Budding DJs go from playing their mum and dad's parties | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
to rocking the decks in major festivals, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
singers from singing hymns in church to performing to sell-out crowds, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:27
and song writers from sharing their songs with no-one | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
to playing to an audience of thousands! | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
Are you ready to hit the stage? We are! | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
THEY CHEER | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
# I keep on moving with the lights on | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
# So come on, baby... # | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
'I've been lucky enough to make a life | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
'out of doing something that I love - singing and performing. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
'You may even know some of my hit singles.' | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
And now I'm in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
Why am I here? Well, it's simple. This year the city is | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
the UK's first ever City Of Culture, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
which means there's loads of massive music events | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
happening all year round, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
and I'm going to help some local kids to hit the stage. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
'I won't be doing it alone, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:21
'I've got two local musicians to help me out | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
'when I'm not around. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:25
'Glenn, who loves hitting the stage himself | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
'when he's rocking out with his band.' | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
'The spark of creativity that they have' | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
reignites the spark that you have, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
so I'm really looking forward to the eight months | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
and seeing where this is going to go. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
D major... | 0:01:37 | 0:01:38
'And Jenny, who likes to take things a bit more slowly | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
'when she's teaching students how to play the harp or sing.' | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
'It's really inspiring to think' | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
that these kids really have so much potential | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
so I'm really, really excited to see what they're going to come up with. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
'I can't wait to get out there and meet them all. First up is Hannah.' | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57

'She's got a big personality with such a big talent to match.' | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
I'm lovin' life. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
# California girls We're unforgettable... # | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
'She lives for music. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
'Up until now, she's been playing and performing covers - | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
'that means doing her own versions | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
'of songs that other people have written. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
'But she has just started writing her own songs...' | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
'But while Hannah looks to have all the confidence in the world, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
'there is one thing she just can't face. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
I always think to play me own song, it's a bit of a risk it's... | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
It's always a bit of a risk, like, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:40
are they going to like it, are they going to, you know... | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
Are they going to hate it? | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
I'm really excited to meet Hannah, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
because apparently she's a brilliant song writer, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
and I love lyrics, I love storytelling, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
so I'm hoping that she sings them for me. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
# I don't care, I love it | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
# I don't care... # | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
-Hello. -How are you doing? | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
-Oh, thank you very much. -I'm Hannah's mother | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
-Hi, Hannah. -Hello. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
I've heard so much about you! | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
It's just in here... | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
Oh, wow, cool. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
Who's this guy with the guitar? | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
That's my boyfriend... But it's, like, been scrunched up | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
every time we fight I scrunch it up and throw it under me bed | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
and then when we make up then I stick it back up again! | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
THEY LAUGH | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
So I heard that you only started showing people your songs | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
not too long ago? Is that right? | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
Um, yeah that's... Yep. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
Yep. Would I be able to hear one of your songs? | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
-Ummm... -Please... | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
Go on, why don't' you go off and show Katy some of your... | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
-Oh...yeah -Yeah? | 0:03:45 | 0:03:46
-Yeah. -Yeah! | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
OK... All right. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
'Up until now the only people who've heard Hannah's songs | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
'have been the pop stars on her walls, | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
'but I think that if she can find the courage | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
'to start performing her own work in public | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
'it could be brilliant for her confidence.' | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
So, it's so mad to have you like in my room, | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
because, like, I've all your songs on my phone | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
and, like, it's just mad that you're, like, sitting here. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
Well, hopefully I'll have some of your songs on my phone soon. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
This is just really crazy, like... | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
So, what's this song called, then? | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
My...Musical Autobiography... So... | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
# Hi, I'm Hannah I can't sing that well | 0:04:35 | 0:04:40
# If you told me a secret I'd never tell | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
# Unless it was to | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
# One of my best friends | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
# Let's get off the subject | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
# Hi, when I'm all grown up | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
# I want to rock the stage | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
# I want to get older but never age | 0:04:55 | 0:04:59
# And I've a sad obsession | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
# With the lazy-eyed man called Russell Howard | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
# Oh-oh-oh | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
# Imma put on a show | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
# To show you | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
# Me... | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
# Let you hear my musical autobiography | 0:05:16 | 0:05:18
# Oh, I want to put on a show... # | 0:05:18 | 0:05:22
Her song-writing is great and I love her lyrics, | 0:05:22 | 0:05:24
she's really funny, she's got a lot to say | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
and you can really see her identity through her lyrics, | 0:05:27 | 0:05:29
you know, this... That song couldn't be about anyone else, | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
it was about Hannah, and I'm glad that she picked that one to play me, | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
because it really kind of gave me a sense of who she is. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
# Oh, oh, oh-oh... # | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
SHE CHEERS | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
That's amazing! | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
Thank you. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:48
What an amazing song to hear everything about you. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
That's, like, brilliant. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
When did you write that song? | 0:05:53 | 0:05:54
A couple of months ago. But I never really played it anywhere, | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
I just... I was just kind of restricted, just playing in me room. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
Yeah. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02 | |
I always just kind of played it, like, in here... | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
And how do you write your songs? Just get the chords going | 0:06:04 | 0:06:07
and then do the words afterwards...? | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
I have, like, a melody in my head | 0:06:09 | 0:06:11
and then just put lyrics to it, just... | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
Usually start with a melody first | 0:06:13 | 0:06:15
and then you put the chords around it? | 0:06:15 | 0:06:17
-Yeah. -OK, that's cool. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:19
'This girl could really go places | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
'and we've got some exciting plans for her...' | 0:06:21 | 0:06:26
DUBSTEP MUSIC | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
Next up of our Hit The Stage kids is Shay. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
When this 13-year-old kick-boxing fanatic | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
is not perfecting his roundhouse kick, | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
he's busy becoming the City of Derry's next superstar DJ. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
When you're playing dance music for all the people | 0:06:48 | 0:06:50
and they're dancing, it kind of makes you happy, | 0:06:50 | 0:06:52
because you know you're providing the music and you're... | 0:06:52 | 0:06:56
You're making them dance, and making them be happy. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
He persuaded his mum to buy him all the latest DJ equipment | 0:07:00 | 0:07:04
so he could start mixing tunes and playing gigs, | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
but mum Sinead didn't realise just how loud DJs like to play. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:12
Shay! Can you turn that music down! I can't have a cup of tea in peace! | 0:07:14 | 0:07:18
He's just raring to get out of the bedroom | 0:07:23 | 0:07:25
and get an audience up on its feet dancing. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:28
So far, he's played birthday parties, family events, | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
and his local community centre, but this DJ has big dreams. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:35
In the future I would like to do something really big, | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
like a festival, or just play in a really big club. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
Today he's gearing up for his biggest gig to date, | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
supporting local dance-music legends Japanese Popstars | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
at one of Derry's best music venues, The Nerve Centre. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
I'm impressed that Shay is already playing the best local venues, | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
but I'm even more impressed that he got this gig | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
by just going to the venue and asking. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
It's true what they say, "If you don't ask, you don't get." | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
I was explaining to the man on the counter that I'm a DJ | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
and he said, "Would you like a gig?" | 0:08:09 | 0:08:10
I said, "Aye." And the rest is history. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
And now Shay has got his big gig, it needs big planning, | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
there could be up to 500 people at the event. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:20
When you're DJing, you have to take a lot of things. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
The few things that I like to do is make sure I have everything. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
You know, list, check it - put it in me back pocket, | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
and when I'm leaving check it off again, make sure I have everything. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
With everything listed and checked, it's show time. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
DUBSTEP MUSIC | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
Shay is playing a blinding set, | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
the beats are right, the lights are perfect, | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
and the graphics are stunning, | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
but there's just one thing missing... | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
..a crowd to enjoy it. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
I mean, the room, is like... | 0:09:05 | 0:09:07
just looking into darkness, it puts you down a bit, kind of... | 0:09:07 | 0:09:10
You do feel a bit less excited | 0:09:10 | 0:09:11
when there's not a lot of people there. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
I'm so disappointed for Shay, | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
it's such a shame that no-one was there to see him perform. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
But he should know that dealing with knock-backs like this | 0:09:20 | 0:09:24
is all part of learning how to succeed in music. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:26
I remember gigs where I would play | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
and the only other people watching | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
were the other bands that were playing on the same night, so...! | 0:09:30 | 0:09:34
You have to think of it sometimes as, like, good practice, | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
because you can think actually there's no pressure | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
but you're still in that environment, so by the time | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
people do get there, you're just, like, killing it. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
'I'm going to make sure that next time Shay performs | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
'he'll have an audience to play to.' | 0:09:50 | 0:09:52
Shay and Hannah are just two of the Hit The Stage group | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
that I'm going to be working with throughout the year. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
We've got harp players, | 0:10:00 | 0:10:02
fiddlers, pianists, | 0:10:02 | 0:10:04
singers and drummers. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:06
And Glenn and Jenny have already got the ball rolling. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
So, I'm here at the Playhouse this morning, | 0:10:10 | 0:10:12
to meet the kids for the first time as a group, | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
and I can't wait to hear them play their instruments. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:18
MUSIC PLAYS | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
Hummm, I can hear them playing already... | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
Hi, guys. It's nice to meet you! | 0:10:26 | 0:10:29
They don't know it yet | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
but I have plans for everyone to play together as a group, | 0:10:32 | 0:10:34
but right now I just want to get to know them all a little bit better. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:38
Ohhh! | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46 | |
So, what are you working on? | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
-We've been working on a duet together. -Can I hear it? -Yeah. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
Oh, cool. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:56
The spectrum is so wide, you know, which is brilliant, | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
because everyone's got their own identity and, um... | 0:11:03 | 0:11:06
So that's really great | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
and everyone can kind of cheer each other on, | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
but at the same time it kind of makes my job difficult | 0:11:10 | 0:11:12
cos I've got to kind of find a piece of music | 0:11:12 | 0:11:15
where everyone can get involved and mix together. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:18
So, I've just heard you all playing | 0:11:19 | 0:11:21
and some of you have just started learning | 0:11:21 | 0:11:23
and some of you have been playing for years, | 0:11:23 | 0:11:25
but I just want to let you know that none of that matters | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
because these next couple of months | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
are all about giving you opportunities | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
that are going to blow your mind, inspire you, | 0:11:31 | 0:11:33
and we're just going to have some fun from music. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:35
Will you sing now, Katy? | 0:11:37 | 0:11:39
-Ah! What do you want me to sing? -Keep On Moving When The Lights Is On. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:43
Yeah? | 0:11:43 | 0:11:44 | |
'I came here to listen to everyone else play, | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
'the last thing I was expecting to do was to have to perform myself!' | 0:11:47 | 0:11:50
-Hi, girls. -ALL: Hi, how are you? | 0:11:50 | 0:11:52
Connor's just asked me to sing Lights On for you guys, | 0:11:52 | 0:11:56
would you play the guitar for me, while I sing? | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
ALL: All right. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:01
I've sung this song probably about 3,000 times in my life, | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
so, hopefully, I won't forget the words! | 0:12:04 | 0:12:06
# Cos I will keep on going until they say so | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
# And even When they do | 0:12:14 | 0:12:16
# It's so hard for me to go | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
# While them others at the cloakroom | 0:12:18 | 0:12:19
# And some others out the door | 0:12:19 | 0:12:21
# We can keep on going in the middle of the floor | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
# Yeah, I keep on moving with the lights on | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
# So come and play me just one more song | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
# I keep on moving with the lights on | 0:12:31 | 0:12:35
# So you can't scare me with the lights on | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
# I keep on moving with the lights on | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
# So come and play me just one more song | 0:12:41 | 0:12:45
# I keep on moving with the lights on | 0:12:45 | 0:12:48
# So you can't scare me with the lights on | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
# Hey, yeah, yeah | 0:12:53 | 0:12:59
# I keep on moving with the lights on... # | 0:12:59 | 0:13:02
ALL: Whoo! | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:13:07 | 0:13:09
'Being put on the spot like that | 0:13:09 | 0:13:10
'was as nerve-wrecking as any big gig I've played, | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
'but thankfully I had great talent backing me up on the guitar.' | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
'I've been thinking about Shay's talents too, | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
'and I think the time has come | 0:13:21 | 0:13:22
'for him to know what it feels like to play at a big event.' | 0:13:22 | 0:13:25
'But if Shay wants to make the big time, | 0:13:28 | 0:13:30
'he is going to have to climb a mountain for real!' | 0:13:30 | 0:13:34
-Told you you'd need Wellies. -Yep. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
'I've sent Glenn on a wet and windy mission | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
'to reveal news of a big opportunity.' | 0:13:41 | 0:13:44
We're up a mountain, it's freezing, | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
it's windy and it's raining and muddy... | 0:13:47 | 0:13:49
You're probably wondering why you're here? | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
-I am. -Katy B's going to explain. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:54
'Hey Shay, it's Katy. I'm stuck in the recording studio, | 0:13:55 | 0:13:59
'but I'm taking a little bit of time out to tell you about your big gig. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:04
'It might not look like much now, | 0:14:04 | 0:14:06
'but in a few weeks, these muddy fields will be transformed | 0:14:06 | 0:14:09
'into Northern Ireland's biggest music festival. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:12
'All sorts of bands are going to be playing on massive stages, | 0:14:12 | 0:14:15
'you are going to be up there with them, | 0:14:15 | 0:14:17
'playing some of the biggest tunes too. | 0:14:17 | 0:14:19
'I've managed to get you a slot | 0:14:19 | 0:14:21
'just before a Radio 1 DJ Philly Taggart plays, | 0:14:21 | 0:14:24
'so there's going to be a really big crowd.' | 0:14:24 | 0:14:26
Looking out here, can you imagine | 0:14:26 | 0:14:28
that this is going to be a massive festival? | 0:14:28 | 0:14:30
Ah, no, I can just see a field. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:33
'It means a lot that Katy B told me | 0:14:33 | 0:14:34
'that I was going to be playing at a festival | 0:14:34 | 0:14:36
'because it's something I've always dreamed about, | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
'and for the next four weeks | 0:14:39 | 0:14:40
'all I'll be doing is just making me set, getting ready, | 0:14:40 | 0:14:43
'getting prepared for everything. And hopefully it goes well.' | 0:14:43 | 0:14:47
'Now, ever since Hannah played me her song | 0:14:52 | 0:14:54
'it's been stuck in my head, it's so good.' | 0:14:54 | 0:14:56
'But if she wants to fulfil her potential, | 0:14:59 | 0:15:01
'she'll have to get out there | 0:15:01 | 0:15:02
'and get used to other people listening to her own songs.' | 0:15:02 | 0:15:06
'As a starting point, | 0:15:08 | 0:15:09
'I've organised for her to be a support act at a local gig. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:13
'If this goes well, | 0:15:13 | 0:15:14
'there's no telling where she could be playing next!' | 0:15:14 | 0:15:16
So, how do you feel about that? | 0:15:16 | 0:15:19
Really excited, but, like, nervous. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:21
I kind of feel like I'm going to melt. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:24
So hope... Roughly how many songs are we talking about here? | 0:15:24 | 0:15:27
-HE EXHALES -I'd say about three. | 0:15:27 | 0:15:29
Three. And are they all originals or...? | 0:15:29 | 0:15:31
-All original. -Oh! -I don't know what you're so afraid of, | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
playing your songs in front of people. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:36
It's... It's own original stuff and if, you know... | 0:15:36 | 0:15:39
If somebody was to turn round and say, "That's not good," | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
I'd be really... I'd be really hurt. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:43
'Hannah's got a lot to think about, | 0:15:43 | 0:15:45
'but if you fancy having a crack at writing a song yourself, | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
'here are some top tips.' | 0:15:48 | 0:15:50
Lyrics are, majority of the time... Are the last things to be put down. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:05
And the last things that are going to be finished usually. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:08
We all sit down and discuss... we play each other little snippets | 0:16:08 | 0:16:11
and we kind of work through them, which ones we like | 0:16:11 | 0:16:13
and which ones we can all be excited about. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:17
Usually, we will record it and then we will... | 0:16:17 | 0:16:20
then put the vocals on top of it. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
The best way to write a song is to write from the heart. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:30
Always write from true-life experiences. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:33
But everyone's different, | 0:16:33 | 0:16:34
everyone likes to write songs about different things. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:36
Things'll come, you'll experience something, | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
you'll get your heart broken, or walk down the street | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
and you'll see something happening, it will inspire you in some way. | 0:16:41 | 0:16:44
You'll hear a new band or a new song... | 0:16:44 | 0:16:45
Something will come along, | 0:16:45 | 0:16:46
as long as you keep yourself surrounded by music, | 0:16:46 | 0:16:50
then songs will always come, do you know what I mean? | 0:16:50 | 0:16:52
It's an exciting morning in Shay's house, | 0:17:17 | 0:17:19
details of the Glasgowbury Festival | 0:17:19 | 0:17:21
have been published in a national newspaper | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
and not only will he find out what time he's on, | 0:17:24 | 0:17:26
he'll be able to find out just how long he'll be playing for. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:29
So, I'm hoping for a half-an-hour set, that would be the best, | 0:17:29 | 0:17:33
I don't think they would give me any time over that. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:36
Here we are. So I'm on for an hour. | 0:17:41 | 0:17:43
And I'm on at half seven to half eight, so that's... | 0:17:43 | 0:17:46
That's brilliant. Wasn't expecting to be that late, | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
or have that amount of time to play, | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
So that's... That's... I'm going to enjoy that. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:54
I've no doubts about Shay's ability, | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
but he's got a big challenge ahead. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:00
He should go straight to the top for a helping hand. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:04
Shay is headed for London, | 0:18:05 | 0:18:06
where I've arranged for him to meet Radio 1's very own Scott Mills. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:11
Ah, it's a bit scary on trains, | 0:18:13 | 0:18:14
it's like you're looking at something, | 0:18:14 | 0:18:16
some trees or something, and just... Bam! | 0:18:16 | 0:18:18
It's the first time | 0:18:22 | 0:18:23
Shay has ever headed for the bright lights of the big city, | 0:18:23 | 0:18:26
which makes it an adventure in itself! | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
I'm glad to get out of the Tube, it's a bit scary! | 0:18:31 | 0:18:34
I didn't expect to see the actual red buses, or the... | 0:18:38 | 0:18:41
black taxis. I thought that was just like a stereotype. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
'Scott Mills is a DJing legend, | 0:18:50 | 0:18:52
'he's done it all - from hosting his own Radio 1 show, | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
'to performing to thousands at festivals all over the world.' | 0:18:55 | 0:18:59
He's a proper DJ. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:01
'Great intro, Shay.' | 0:19:01 | 0:19:03
Like, beat matching and everything! | 0:19:03 | 0:19:05
-Oh, no. I can't even do that! -I said that! | 0:19:05 | 0:19:08
Oh, no. I've got to watch my back! | 0:19:08 | 0:19:11
LAUGHTER | 0:19:11 | 0:19:12
'Shay settles in to hear a bit of Scott's show | 0:19:12 | 0:19:15
'before quizzing him on how to handle a festival crowd.' | 0:19:15 | 0:19:17
How do you feel about DJing in front of a crowd? | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
Is it scary? | 0:19:22 | 0:19:23
I used to really, really get scared, | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
but, um, the more you do it, the less scared you become | 0:19:26 | 0:19:29
and it's actually really exciting. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:32
Does it scare you? | 0:19:32 | 0:19:33
Um... | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35 | |
sort of. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:36
I think the adrenaline of when you get out there | 0:19:36 | 0:19:38
and you see all those people, initially it will be scary, | 0:19:38 | 0:19:41
but once you've started I think you'll be fine. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:43
They're all there to have a good time, | 0:19:43 | 0:19:45
so, you know, they're... It's going to be great, it's going to be fine. | 0:19:45 | 0:19:48
'That's great advice from Scott, | 0:19:48 | 0:19:50
'time for Shay to start preparing his festival set.' | 0:19:50 | 0:19:53
It's a very skilled job. | 0:19:57 | 0:19:58
He chooses the tracks | 0:19:58 | 0:19:59
that he thinks will attract a crowd and keep them dancing. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:03
He has to work out | 0:20:03 | 0:20:04
what song is going to flow effortlessly into a another | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
by matching the beats in the song, | 0:20:07 | 0:20:10
or the BPM as the DJs call it. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:12
A set list is just completely different from a play list | 0:20:12 | 0:20:15
on something like iTunes. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:16
That's what most people think it is. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
The music I make is very technical. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:20
Not content with just picking the best tunes | 0:20:20 | 0:20:22
and mixing them into each other, | 0:20:22 | 0:20:24
Shay is able to add his own musical compositions, | 0:20:24 | 0:20:27
which help improve his set. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:28
There's a lot of work that I have to do before I'm happy with it - | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
and if you listen to it together with everything else... | 0:20:31 | 0:20:35
HEAVY BEAT PLAYS | 0:20:36 | 0:20:38
So, that's the kicking under the song. This is the kick you use... | 0:20:38 | 0:20:42
I'm thinking about changing it. | 0:20:42 | 0:20:44
At the touch of a button, | 0:20:44 | 0:20:45
Shay can call upon a full orchestra of musical instruments | 0:20:45 | 0:20:49
to enhance the sound of the tracks he's picked. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:51
So, I'm thinking of this pattern, just simple. Just playing in. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:58
So, usually I just play around with the drum patterns. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
DRUMBEAT PLAYS | 0:21:02 | 0:21:05
Just going to loop it to see if it sounds all right. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:09
That sounds better. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:13
Sounds better than just a plain four-four kick. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:17
After two short weeks of practice, | 0:21:21 | 0:21:23
it's the day of Hannah's first-ever gig. | 0:21:23 | 0:21:26
But even budding pop stars have to go to school. | 0:21:26 | 0:21:30
Haven't been able to concentrate at all today. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:35
I'm really scared in case I forget the words or I forget... | 0:21:35 | 0:21:38
If I, like, mess up the chords, if I, like... Just everything... | 0:21:40 | 0:21:44
Just everything that could go wrong is going through my head. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:50
When a girl is up against it, what she needs is her best friend. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:57
-Catherine comes round to help with the preparations. -Are you excited? | 0:21:57 | 0:22:00
-A little bit. -Top of the priority list is what to wear. | 0:22:00 | 0:22:04
-Hannah? -What? | 0:22:04 | 0:22:06
You have half an hour to get ready. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:08
Do you want Catherine to do your make-up? | 0:22:08 | 0:22:10
She has half an hour before she has to go. | 0:22:10 | 0:22:12
Please just wash your face, | 0:22:12 | 0:22:14
put yourself into some pyjamas until you get your clothes on | 0:22:14 | 0:22:18
-and do your make-up. -OK. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:20
Hannah is normally never, ever, ever, ever nervous, so it's kind of weird. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:30
I've looked in the spare room, I've looked in the drawers, | 0:22:32 | 0:22:35
I've looked in your wardrobe. Now, have you any idea where it could be? | 0:22:35 | 0:22:39
Oh, look! | 0:22:39 | 0:22:41
You see, that skirt isn't suitable. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:43
-It is suitable. -No, it's too clingy. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:46
-It isn't. -It is too clingy. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:47
-It's not too clingy. -It is too clingy. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:49
Are you going to listen to her? | 0:22:49 | 0:22:51
Listen to your mother. For once. | 0:22:51 | 0:22:53
Oh she's... She's serious, Hannah | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
-Oh, dear, look who's here(!) -BOTH: Ooooooo. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:58
-I'm going to kill the two of you. -Go away. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:02
-SHE LAUGHS -Hannah! | 0:23:05 | 0:23:07
What! | 0:23:07 | 0:23:08 | |
Listen, it's time to go. Are you ready? | 0:23:08 | 0:23:10
No! | 0:23:10 | 0:23:12 | |
As Hannah continues to wrestle with the all-important question | 0:23:12 | 0:23:16
of "What's a girl to wear?", Shay's big day has arrived. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
Glasgowbury is the largest | 0:23:28 | 0:23:29
family-friendly festival in Northern Ireland, | 0:23:29 | 0:23:32
with over 5,000 people of all ages | 0:23:32 | 0:23:34
dancing to some of the biggest local acts, | 0:23:34 | 0:23:36
and Shay is here to keep the party going. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:39
He heads straight to the dance stage | 0:23:43 | 0:23:45
to check out where he'll be taking to the decks | 0:23:45 | 0:23:47
right before Radio 1's Phil Taggart plays a headline set. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:51
Watching the other DJs at work, | 0:23:56 | 0:23:58
and crucially, how the crowd are reacting to the music, | 0:23:58 | 0:24:01
Shay makes a difficult decision. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:03
I would say, looking at some of the DJs, | 0:24:05 | 0:24:07
just by what they're playing and how the crowd's reacting, | 0:24:07 | 0:24:10
-I want to change the set slightly. -RECORD SCRATCHES | 0:24:10 | 0:24:12
What did he say? Change his set list - at this stage?! | 0:24:12 | 0:24:16
Let's rewind that! | 0:24:16 | 0:24:17
-I want to change the set slightly. -He really means it! | 0:24:19 | 0:24:23
He is unpicking all of his hard preparation | 0:24:23 | 0:24:25
and is going to start from scratch | 0:24:25 | 0:24:26
to pick the tracks he hopes will attract and keep the biggest crowd. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:30
I don't really want to be doin' it. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
Because I have the set perfectly made | 0:24:33 | 0:24:36
where I know what time they mix on and what time they mix out. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:40
With just half an hour to go before he hits the stage, | 0:24:40 | 0:24:44
he is taking a big risk! | 0:24:44 | 0:24:45
It's all part of being a DJ, you have to take risks, in playing. | 0:24:45 | 0:24:50
I'm just trying to know what everybody wants to hear. | 0:24:50 | 0:24:53
Only a few months ago Shay was playing to an empty room, | 0:24:57 | 0:25:00
but now he's preparing to play the biggest gig of his life. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
The question is, | 0:25:03 | 0:25:04
will he be able to make it up as he goes along, track by track? | 0:25:04 | 0:25:08
ANNOUNCER: Ladies and gentlemen, your DJ for the evening - | 0:25:11 | 0:25:15
give it up for Shay Whelan! | 0:25:15 | 0:25:18
HEAVY DUBSTEP PLAYS | 0:25:20 | 0:25:22
First track down, and the crowd are still dancing, | 0:25:33 | 0:25:36
he's under pressure to keep this good start going. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:38
It seems to be working, | 0:25:47 | 0:25:48
Shay's last-minute music choices | 0:25:48 | 0:25:50
are bringing more and more people to the dance stage. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:53
It looks like he's really pulled it off. Go on, Shay! | 0:25:54 | 0:25:57
Give it up for Shay Whelan! | 0:26:10 | 0:26:11
CHEERING | 0:26:11 | 0:26:13
