It's time to meet today's dancing designer.

I'm Sophia, and I love to dance. But I've got no space to practise.

I need my own room.

Sophia needs more space to practise her dance moves,

so we're going to convince her mum and dad to hand over the keys to their house.

-Yes!

-She'll be creating her room with a funky designer.

-Are you happy with it?

-Yeah, it's really good.

Searching for ideas in fantastic places.

-Have you ever seen anything like this on a window before?

-No.

And keeping Mum and Dad on their toes.

Just put your whole body into it.

But can the team create

a dance studio Sophia will love in just four days?

-The team are on it.

-The team are sat around having a cup of tea.

12-year-old Sophia is a dancing queen with a problem - nowhere to practise.

Her bedroom is way too small for dancing,

and using the lounge is out of the question.

-Sophia!

-We've been waiting for this all day.

So she ends up practising her dance moves

in her mum and dad's room and in the garden.

And her dance costumes have taken over the entire house,

which older brother Billy hates.

-Sophia!

-I'm on my way to help Sophia find room to throw some shapes.

-Hello, Sophia. Can I come in?

-Yeah, sure.

-Thank you very much.

Oh, Sophia! It's really squashed, isn't it?

OK, so there's two beds. Which one's yours?

-This one.

-And this?

-My sister's, Katie.

-Your sister Katie sleeps here.

-So are all yours and Katie's stuff all in this room?

-Yeah.

-Where do you keep the rest of your stuff?

-Under here.

-Oh, crikey.

That's really packed in down there, isn't it?

Those are my clothes under there, because we have no room for a wardrobe.

Heavens above. Is there anything else you need from your space?

-Just somewhere to chill out so I can just have my friends round.

-Right.

-Is there space anywhere else in the house we could have a look at?

-The living room?

Decent-sized living room.

You have a minor problem that if you're watching television

and you're dancing in the middle, very annoyed Mum and Dad

-when you're in front of the television?

-Yeah.

-What other space have we got?

-There's the garden.

-Well, it's a decent sized garden, isn't it?

-Yeah, it's pretty big.

-What's this for?

-My dad was going to make it into a dance space,

but I couldn't really dance on it because it got really slippery.

What would you say, Sophia, if I got the I Want My Own Room team

to construct you a brilliant dance space out here in the garden?

-That would be really good.

-What do you think Mum and Dad would say?

-Well, I think they will like it in the end.

-We'll have to persuade them.

So, Sophia has nowhere to practise her dancing.

But I think we could create her very own dance studio in the back garden.

But will her mum and dad hand over the keys to the house?

Now, Mum and Dad, Sophia has shown me around the house, and you have to admit,

she's hardly got any room for dancing.

I mean, it's a really tight squeeze.

What we've done is measured out the available floor space

in Sophia and Katie's room,

halved it because there's two of them and recreated it over there.

And we'd like you to have a little dance in that space to see what it's like for Sophia.

So, lead the way. Go on, in you go, Mum and Dad. Don't hold back.

Have a look and decide which props and costumes you want to pop on.

Have you ever seen either of your parents in a tutu before, Sophia?

No! Well, maybe my dad.

That is a look! Oh, Dad! Loving it.

I'm just going to pop the tape across.

So, that is the exact space that Sophia has to dance in her room.

So, are you ready, Mum and Dad?

Are we going to get any breakdancing?

-Think they're good movers?

-No.

It's a little bit tight.

I think we might do some slow dancing in a bit.

-Now can you understand the problem that Sophia has?

-We can indeed.

It's very frustrating.

Dad, I think you should keep that wig and that headband.

-I think you might not get it back.

-He's so embarrassing!

Mum and Dad, do you agree to let Sophia redesign

your house and garden in any way she chooses to give her more space?

-Let's just go for it.

-Let's go for it.

-You know you've got to do it.

Yes!

Sophia now has control of her house and garden.

So, Mum and Dad are answering to her. But it's not for ever.

She has just four days before she has to hand back those house keys.

Helping Sophia create her unique practice space

is I Want My Own Room designer Michelle Ackerley.

Michelle will need all her skills

if she is to turn Sophia's weed-filled garden into a dream dance studio.

What can you imagine in the dancing space? What is going to be important to you in there?

A ballet barre, and a big mirror on the wall.

And a little mirror to put make-up on.

-And have you had a thought about colours?

-I love baby pink.

-Like your jumper?

-Yeah!

Sophia has loads of ideas, but to help her imagine how the room might work,

they mark out the space using some white sticks.

-Where can you imagine your chill-out area to be in this space?

-This side.

They use some of Sophia's stuff to represent the different areas of the room.

-What about your ballet barre? Where do you want that to go?

-There.

And as the stuff goes into the space, the room is taking shape.

-Are you happy with it?

-Yeah, it's really good.

Sophia has got her design off on the right foot,

but she needs even bigger ideas for her studio.

So Michelle is taking her to one of the country's top ballet companies.

Now, this building is less than a year old,

so it is state-of-the-art. What do you think?

It's really big and modern and cool.

-What you think of going to see one of the studios to get some ideas?

-Yeah!

After you.

This is the biggest indoor rehearsal space in Europe.

The rehearsal room isn't just a bare empty room.

It has some unique design touches.

-What do you think of this?

-It's cool.

-Have you ever seen anything like this on a window before?

-No.

-What do you notice about these ones?

-They move.

They move, so if you stand in a certain spot,

she is kind of like horizontal, and then she moves back.

-That's so clever, isn't it?

-Yeah, every way you see it, you see something different.

Michelle wants to show Sophia another design feature

that might be worth reflecting on.

When the ballerinas are practising, they keep the curtains closed

so they can concentrate on their form and not staring at themselves.

Once they've got all the moves,

they'll open the curtains and see what their expressions are like.

All you have to do is pull this curtain across,

and you've got your fantastic mirror behind it.

How would you feel having curtains and mirrors like this in your space?

It would be good, because I could see what I'm doing, and when I don't want to,

I can pull it across and work on my feet.

The design trip has already given Sophia lots to think about,

and to get some expert info, they've found technical director Andy.

So, Andy, what sort of advice could you give me for my dance studio?

The most important thing other than the ballet barres is the floor.

What you need is a sprung floor, so when you jump up and down,

it doesn't hurt your knees and hurt your ankles.

And natural light coming through the windows. It's great to dance in natural light.

After seeing the ballet company's rehearsal rooms,

Michelle has a clearer idea of the challenge facing her.

The thing about the room I'm dealing with is

it's not just going to be a dance space.

It's going to be an area to chill out in. And to display her costumes.

So to get some storage tips, it's off to the wardrobe department.

These costumes just look so amazing, don't they?

It's colourful, it's eye-catching,

and it would be lovely to kind of replicate this in some way

in your room. Take a look in here.

Oh, yeah. Cos I've got more than one pair of ballet shoes or tap shoes,

I can pop them in different slots, so whenever I need to, I just pull them out.

Coming to the dance studio has been really useful,

because it's where other professional dancers come and work,

so then I know what they do, and what I can do to make it better in mine.

While Michelle thinks about the finer details of the design,

Sophia is hop-skipping back to the house

to kick off work on her dream dance space.

Come on, everybody, let's get my dance studio started.

But there's just one tiny hurdle - a very messy garden.

Well, Sophia, you're the boss now, so take it away.

Mum and Dad, we really need to start clearing this garden,

so put these on and get to work.

Three, two, one, go!

Dad's getting into the swing of things,

but Mum is getting bogged down worrying about wildlife in the garden.

-I worry about the frog community.

-What are you chatting about?

-The frogs.

-Don't talk about the frogs, just clear.

-Save the frogs!

Is there a doctor in the house?

Tell me you don't care about squirrels.

-No.

-That's nuts.

-You're nuts.

What are you doing?

I'm changing my brand-new trainers

because I don't want to get them ruined.

-Look how white they are.

-You're such a wimp.

-Charming!

Good work, Dad.

Well, my dad's doing really good, but my mum's scared of all the frogs that might jump out on her.

I'm a dance mum, and I do sequins and I do costumes.

And I do pretty hair and make-up. This really isn't me.

Whilst the team gets stuck in digging out the space for the building,

we've sneaked off to a quiet corner

to have a look at how Michelle has tweaked Sophia's design.

I don't want to be rude, but is that it?

I knew you'd say that! At the end of the day,

this is going to be a dance area for you,

so Sophia needs a lot of space within the room

to practise her dance moves.

We're going to have your ballet barre along here so you can practise all your ballet moves.

We're going to have corner shelves,

and also a kind of costume area here.

The reason it looks so bare is because a lot of the things that we're having

are along the outside edges of the room,

which means the inside will be totally dedicated to you using it for your dancing.

-Has she missed anything out?

-No.

So, after the first day,

how is Sophia feeling about progress so far?

I think today's gone well, because we've got to a good stage

so we can start building tomorrow.

But there's no rest for the I Want My Own Room team,

who work hard into the evening to finish off the foundations.

So, dance-mad Sophia barely had space to perform a pirouette,

but now we've convinced Mum and Dad to hand over the keys to the house,

we're planning on creating a purpose-built dance studio.

But will Sophia be dancing in the aisles when she finally sees her very own room?

It's the beginning of day two, and the I Want My Own Room team

are up with the lark to start constructing Sophia's dream dance studio.

And they're not hanging around.

I'm really pleased with it so far. It's looking good.

For the duration of the building project,

Sophia and her parents are staying with relatives nearby.

They're on their way back to the house,

and Sophia has big plans for Mum and Dad.

Well, Sophia, what have we got in store for us today?

Well, I've got lots of jobs for you, so it should keep you busy all day.

Oh, no!

And there's a big surprise waiting for Sophia in the garden.

Oh, wow.

-Hey, Sophia, are you all right? What do you think?

-Brilliant.

-It's massive.

-It is. That's what I thought.

It's big, but it's far from finished.

To transform the building into a sleek dance studio,

the inside walls need to be lined with wooden boards.

The boards need painting, and that sounds like work for Mum and Dad.

I've got some rollers here for you two to do some painting on these boards.

Here you go, Dad. He you go, Mum.

Come on, Mum, put your back into it.

-Hey, steady, this is my bit.

-Put your whole body into it.

-That's it, Mum!

-My glasses are falling off!

-I don't care.

I think Dad is doing the best,

because he's really good at painting long bits,

but my mum is rubbish, because she's got small arms.

A long stride like that, do you get it? Yeah?

Try painting with these on.

With Mum and Dad put to work, Sophia can turn her attention

to a design feature she discovered on her trip to the ballet company -

the sprung dance floor.

She wants to create her own version in her studio,

so it's time to chat to carpenter Andy.

-How's it going, Andy?

-It's going good.

Just working on Sophia's dancefloor.

-Brilliant.

-What kind of dancing do you do?

-Ballet, tap and street dance.

-Yes?

What we are going to try and achieve is to take some of the pressure

off your knees and give you a little bit of bounce under your floor.

That is going to go under a board

and then we will have a floor finish on top.

-Do you think that will help your knees?

-Yes, it's good.

With work on the dance studio underway it is off to

Sophia's room to collect up some dancing memories

which Michelle wants to transform into a piece of art.

I thought it would be a nice idea to incorporate

all of that into a picture frame

-and then you can hang it up on your wall in your dance studio.

-Yes.

The first thing you need is a frame

and a coloured piece of card to stick all the things to.

I have got some pink card.

I'm going to place this on the back to act as a template

to stick everything on. The great thing about this

-is you can do it with absolutely anything.

-Yes.

-It's just a bit different.

-Yes.

A good tip for creating your picture is to start from the centre

and work out.

Sophia has chosen something very special for her centrepiece.

Her very first ballet shoes.

They could make a picture by themselves

if you put a frame around. They look great don't they?

The next stage is to stick things to the card to build up the picture.

There is no right or wrong way to do it. Just get stuck in.

-What do you reckon we do next?

-Put some tutu netting across here.

-Shall we do that?

-Yes.

-It is time for the moment of truth.

How has Sophia's memory box picture turned out?

With the funky picture finished it is time to see how

Mum and Dad are getting on with their painting.

It's not mine. I do not have time to stop.

The quality of Mum and Dad's work has not been very good

because they got coffee stains all over it

and there are loads of bits all over

and it is really patchy, the paint on it.

Luckily for Sophia, Mum and Dad have back up in the form of the

I Want My Own Room Team.

The team has finished building the structure of the studio

and are now working on laying the sprung dance floor.

There's just two days to go and still loads to do

but there does not seem to be much going on in the garden.

I think it is time we gave them a hurry up.

There is so many things still to attach on the walls,

to paint on the walls, to stick on. That will take time.

-Those are things you have to help with.

-We're not worried at all.

-The team are on it.

-The team are having a cup of tea at the moment.

To keep some design features secret, the family are now banned

from the back garden until the dance studio is finished.

But Michelle is confident she knows what Sophia wants

so she has flagged up another job for Mum and Dad.

You are going to be decorating the outside of Sophia's dance

studio with some lovely bunting.

All you have got to do is draw round these templates onto

the different pieces of material, cut them out

with our scissors and attach them to the bunting ribbon.

The person that does the best bunting decoration is the one

that Sophia is going to choose. It is all to play for.

-Are you creative?

-Definitely not.

-It is time to get creative.

inspired by her trip to the ballet company.

What did you think of the dance studio last time you saw it?

I did not expect it to be as big as it was,

but everything is going smoothly so far.

I've got my visions. When you mix and match colours... Don't look.

That looks fabulous.

Your Mum and Dad are at your uncle's house making the bunting.

Who do you think is going to be best at that, your mum or your dad?

I think my mum because she is more creative than my dad.

-No.

-That is what all blokes are like.

What does it mean to you to have your very own dance studio?

It will be life-changing because it is somewhere to practise

and chill out.

It will be brilliant.

My bunting line is that long, it has gone into the garden border.

I need to pull my bunting across like so.

My wife is known as the sequin queen.

Unfortunately I think she has become the dancing queen

because my work is far superior to hers.

I am just devastated.

Back at the house, pressure is mounting

for the I Want My Own Room Team.

I want to check that we are still on the right track.

There is one thing missing that will make you really disappointed.

What is that one thing? The ballet barre thing.

But I think that will be in there.

Try and get some sleep tonight, have lovely ballet-filled dreams

and tomorrow you are going to see your new room.

I'd love to say the team are organised and on schedule,

but I'd be lying. It's chaos!

Sophia and her mum and dad are less than 30 minutes away.

I'm feeling really excited to see my dance studio, I can't wait.

Just four days ago,

Sophia was a downbeat dancer with nowhere to practise.

But along came the I Want My Own Room Team

who put their best foot forward

and transformed the weed-ridden end of the garden

into a stunning dance studio.

With design features like a personalised mirror,

a sprung dancefloor,

and a space-saving fold up make-up area,

this room is completely unique.

But will it be a showstopping success or a flat-footed disaster?

It's time for Sophia to judge.
