'who designed their own rooms to see what happened after we left.

'Do they all still love their spaces?

'Or have any of them made big changes?'

It's fab, isn't it? Have you been using it loads?

This is I Want My Own Room, the show where you get

the room you deserve.

And, frankly, I think I deserve this room.

It's a lovely place to relax

and catch up with some of our favourite spaces.

It's been nothing but hard graft for me and the team, lately.

Anyway, enough about me. Do you remember Kathryn and Suzy?

These two budding starlets

had nowhere to practise their acting, singing and dancing.

So the I Want My Own Room cast jumped on the design tour bus,

and headed off to their family home.

'Meet Kathryn and Suzy.

'They're drama and music mad, but had nowhere to practise.

'The girls had to come up with alternative places to rehearse,

'and it just wasn't working.

'So we decided it was time to close the curtain

'on this shabby production, and went to see if we could help.'

-Hi, Lisa.

-Hey, come on in.

-Thank you very much.

'The girls took me on a tour of the house,

'and showed me the extremely cluttered spare room.'

Oh, my word. You were not kidding!

Definitely potential for practising and performing.

-Don't you think?

-BOTH: Yeah.

'The girls persuaded a reluctant Mum

'to hand over control of the house and keys.'

-OK, then. Make a good job of it.

-ALL: Yes!

'Kathryn and Suzy then got cracking

'designing the theatre room of their dreams,

'with the help of designer, Michelle Ackerley.'

Brilliant. That's a great idea.

'With only four days to finish the room,

'the girls gave Mum her own starring role...'

-I've made a hole.

-BOTH: A very small one!

'Cleaner-upper of all that junk.

'The design was finalised by Michelle and the girls

'and the show really was on the road.'

I really like it, yeah.

It's really good, and it's got everything we wanted in it.

'It was all go at the house,

'but mum still had to sort through all the junk cleared from the room.

'Meanwhile, Michelle had an idea to give their new space a facelift

-with some theatre masks.'

-Let's see what they look like.

'Michelle wanted to keep some of the design a surprise,

'so the family stayed elsewhere while the room was finished.

'It was all hands on deck - or stage? -

'as the team had just hours to complete the room

'before the girls returned.

'Finally, the room was ready for its opening night,

'but how did Kathryn and Suzy react?'

I didn't expect this. It's so much better than I thought it would be.

I really like it.

It's just amazing and unbelievable.

'It's been a while since I raised the curtain

'on Kathryn and Suzy's new room, so I thought I'd pop back

'to see how they're getting on.'

-Hello, there. I'm back.

-BOTH: Hello!

-Come on in.

So, what have you done to the room since I was last here?

We've added a bookcase and some shelves in.

And what about the chairs and stuff here?

We added more chairs in so we can have more audience.

-Do you still love it as much as before?

-BOTH: Yeah.

We're doing a play. Would you like to take part?

-Oh, that sounds fab! What would you like me to do?

-Be an alien.

'Before I make my stage debut as an alien,

'we get arty, making programmes for tonight's performance.'

So, what's your favourite thing about the room, Suzy?

Probably the stage area and the piano,

so we can do plays with the piano now.

I like the sofa, cos we can just come out and blob out.

What did you enjoy most about the I Want My Own Room experience?

Designing it's been the best, cos we knew what it's going to be like.

Seeing the room revealed and transformed completely

is just amazing.

And how have things changed for you since you've had your new room?

We didn't have any space to practise, before.

So we practise more, so we're much better at our instruments now,

and it's given us more confidence to do stuff in front of our friends.

In a land far away, known as Landanda,

a girl had spent many years with the face of an alien.

This was the unfortunate event after a visit from a spaceship.

Lisa has spent many years hidden away.

But her luck was about to change.

Little girl! Little girl!

Please can I talk to you? I've been transformed

into a hideous monster.

With a crash of lightning and a rumble of thunder,

Lisa returned to her former self.

Ah!

APPLAUSE

CHEERING

Well, I think that went really well.

The girls obviously love their room, so I think my work here is done.

Wait! Lisa, stop. You've got our mask. We want our mask back.

Oh, yeah, sorry about that, Suzy. There you go.

BOTH: We've got our own room!

I'm not sure what species of bird that is.

But one boy who would know is Elliot.

Elliot is mad-keen on bird watching,

but he had nowhere to look for his feathered friends in peace.

We thought it only fair to right that wrong.

Soon I'll be paying a flying visit to see how he's getting on,

but first, let's remind ourselves what happened

when the I Want My Own Room team descended on his home.

'Elliot is an avid bird watcher.

'But, sadly, he couldn't see any birds from his bedroom

'at the front of the house.

'The back of the house overlooks fields,

'where there are plenty of winged wonders for Elliot to observe.

'But sister Jess was not impressed with him using her room

'for his favourite hobby.'

Elliot, it's 7 in the morning, get out my room.

Mum!

'So we called in designer Ben Huckerby to find a solution

'to Elliot's dilemma.'

Tell me a bit about what you want to do in the space.

I need, like, an observation hut

so I can view the birds from the bush and in the trees.

'Ben and Elliot decided the garden would be a perfect place

'to build a bird hide.'

We could get really adventurous,

and perhaps even build it in the shape of a giant bird's nest.

How would that sound?

That'd sound... good. Yeah.

-And what was that?

-That was a blackbird.

'Elliot wasted no time pecking his parents' heads for change.

'And they got into a flap trying to help out.'

I don't know if it was the right idea, giving our Elliot the keys.

'Ben wanted to keep parts of the design a secret,

'so Elliot and the family flew the nest

'while the final touches were put in place.'

We've got a full team in this afternoon,

and hopefully we can really crack on.

I really hope so.

'The team were up at the crack of sparrows on the final day,

'but it wasn't long before Elliot and his family returned home.

from his hide in the garden, than he did in his bedroom?

-Hello, Elliot.

-How you doing?

-All right.

-Have you used the hide a lot?

-Yeah.

Loads. Like, every day, probably. Yeah.

So have you seen many more birds since you've had the hide?

I saw... Look, there. It's just gone under the hedge.

I did, I saw a warbler, so I was happy with that.

Brilliant. I can see you're listing all the birds you've seen

-up on your whiteboard, there.

-Yeah.

So, have you changed anything or added anything to the hide?

Yeah, I've got a bird table there. And my dad made the sign up there.

It says "Elliot's hide, 2011, designed by Ben."

Which is really good.

It's like a plaque to say when it was made, and all that.

So I really like that.

-And what do Mum and Dad think of it?

-They think it's brilliant. Amazing.

So do I.

'It's lunchtime for the birds, so we brave the rain

'and head outside.'

-Now, the weather is pretty bad today, isn't it, Elliot?

-Yeah.

-There are not many birds around at the moment, are there?

-No.

Do they not like the rain, birds? Are they a bit like us?

Yeah, kind of. Some birds come out, but not many.

Oh, there's one! What's that? Is that a heron?

-Where?

-Just gone round the corner, up there.

Oh, no. He's gone.

Quite a big wingspan. It might've been.

-And a sort of long beak.

-Yeah.

If you think back to how things were before you got the hide,

how has your life improved or changed since you got it?

I don't know how I coped, really. Cos it was dead hard.

It was, like, you couldn't even see any colours on the birds, really.

You could just see it hopping in.

I could identify them, but now it's a lot easier.

And the birds don't even know I'm there.

Is there anything you don't like, or you'd like to change?

No. Nothing at all.

Em... No.

I got my own room!

Elliot was lucky, as he had a whole new space built for him.

But a lot of the rooms we redesigned started life just full of clutter.

And clearing them proved no easy task

for some of those junk-loving parents.

Boo! Boo!

This looks like what was once a stick of rock.

SHE SIGHS: Well done.

-It is. Job well done.

-Well done.

-OK. Back to the house, then?

Now, I'm not one to blow my own trumpet...

But under the guidance of some very talented kids,

the I Want My Own Room team have created some amazing spaces.

One such room belongs to music-loving Jaya,

and I'm very excited to be going back

to see what's happened since we left.

And, in case you missed it, here's what happened

when we called in on Jaya and her family.

'Jaya is a budding musician and writer,

'but she had no privacy in her bedroom,

'as Dad kept his books in there, and Mum used it as a beauty salon.

My bedroom's been taken over by alien space invaders.

ALIEN NOISES

Otherwise known as my family.

'When Jaya finally did get some peace to practise her music,

'she was constantly being told to keep the noise down!'

Jaya! I'm on the phone!

'So, we convinced Mum and Dad that Jaya needed a room re-vamp.

'And they handed over the house keys.

'And, with the help of designer Michelle, Jaya was free to design

'a haven, where she could play music and write in peace.'

Jaya has come up with some fantastic ideas already.

This room is going to be amazing. I can feel it.

'Jaya loved being in charge for a change.'

Dad, you're going to fill in the holes with Andy.

Mum, you're going to be doing painting with Michelle.

'The I Want My Own Room team had to race against the clock

'to complete the room.

'But after all that work,

'did the room hit a high note with Jaya, or did it fall flat?'

Aw, Jaya. Your lovely room. Have you enjoyed using it?

Yeah, a lot.

Tell me about what you've changed. It's a bit different, isn't it?

Yeah. Well, I've put a few more clothes in it,

and put one of my wardrobes in. Added loads more clothes in there, too.

And I put some more of those up.

What do you like best about the whole room?

I think my writing area, because I love the magnetic wall.

And I love making up new sentences,

and I love writing really good stories to match up the sentences.

What do you think you've used most?

I think I use my music booth most,

because, like, practising my instruments

and blowing my trumpet.

Have Mum and Dad stopped complaining about the noise?

Yeah, a lot. They don't shout any more.

They might shout to serve my tea, or something,

or for me to go downstairs, but not anything else.

They keep asking, "Have you practised your instrument today?"

"Yes." They're like, "I didn't hear you."

What about, cos your mum was coming in every morning

and drying her hair in your room.

How's she coping without doing that?

-She's doing it in her own room, at last.

-And is that better for you?

Yeah, much better. She doesn't disturb me in my sleep.

'With Jaya singing the room's praises,

'I attempt to get a little bit musical myself.'

BAD TRUMPET NOISES

'Yeah. Enough of that.

'I think I'll try my hand at a bit of creative writing instead.'

-"Sausage" is just a good word, isn't it?

-Yeah.

Sang! I think "I sang in the funfair. I sang..."

Just can't seem to work out how to get in.

'Sometimes things are a bit of a tight squeeze.

Then you've got the mattress. I know Jake's a slim child,

Yeah, we were thinking that, actually.

Perhaps I shouldn't have worn my evening dress on a decorating site.

It's going to be fine.

I thought the grass stain was part of the design.

No, that is definitely not part of our design.

I've got the fear.

We get this wrong, and the red paint comes off the wall,

do you think the team might have, like, proper hissy fits?

I think they might cry.

I've just concentrated so hard my eyes are watering.

We were literally dancing with joy at the thought of helping

two very energetic sisters, Freya and Hattie,

create a design den to practise their hobbies in.

And these disco boots will soon be hot-footing their way back

to see what the girls have been making, sticking and doing

since we left.

'Freya and Hattie shared a room, but wanted more space to practise

'their hobbies of film making, sewing and Plasticine modelling.'

BOTH: We want our own room!

'We decided this creative duo needed help

'to fulfil their artistic potential, and paid them a visit.'

-Hello.

-BOTH: Hi!

How you doing?

-BOTH: Good. Come in.

'After a quick look around the house,

'we saw potential in the front room.'

I think we might have found our solution.

-Great.

-Yep.

'So, with Mum's approval, the girls got started

'on their dream design den.'

How about having a type of wallpaper which actually has sections in

that you can paint in, you can draw in, you could stick things on?

-That's a brilliant idea!

'The girls are passionate about their Plasticine model making,

'so Michelle took them to an animation workshop,

'which they loved.'

That is awesome! I like it when her tears come down her face.

'the thumbs up, so it was all go for the I Want My Own Room design team.'

Aw, I've got very fond memories of your room.

-Have you used it lots since we went?

-Yeah.

I made cushions, bunting, we've added things to the walls,

and we've drawn pictures and we've painted

and things like that, really.

-How about you, Freya?

-Movies with all our friends, they look brilliant.

We've had sleep overs. We've made loads more of Plasticine,

and we've done sewing, and we've done all sorts.

So what did you enjoy most about the I Want My Own Room experience?

-Freya?

-I think, seeing the finale bit.

I didn't know really what to expect, I was just really excited,

like, "I can't wait!"

And then as soon as you opened the door, just, like, "Wow!"

I liked everything, really, but, same as Freya,

I liked seeing the ending, like,

seeing what it was going to look like,

to see if I was going to like it.

But obviously I do like it, yeah. It's really good.

What's your favourite thing that's gone on the wall so far?

Em, well, there's a really cute picture of me

asleep, there.

FREYA LAUGHS

So I think that's probably my favourite one.

There's pictures of us all together,

and there's drawings and they all look really good.

I can't really choose one.

I like them. I think it's really cool that you can draw on your wall.

I like the way everyone's got their own, like,

everyone's drawn in boxes.

In the next couple of years, if everyone who comes here draws,

it'll just become full,

and all the high ones will get done by adults, and things.

So it'll look really good.

So it's almost like a picture version

of a visitor's book, isn't it?

Now, part of the experience, of course, was you got control,

and you got to order your mum around. Did you enjoy that?

That was really fun, but I know it's not going to happen again.

Cos she won't allow that.

But, cos I got that opportunity, obviously,

it was really good fun bossing Mum around.

Cos she couldn't really do anything about it.

And I don't think she enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed it.

Yeah, well, it's not very often you get to tell your parents

what to do, and make sure they do it,

and if they don't, they get told off.

It's usually the other way round. So it's been really good experience.

'I'm itching to have a go at the animation station,

'so the girls give me a mini lesson.'

OK, so. It comes on and you just click that little camera button,

and then it'll come down here,

and it'll say which number it is. So now it says 001, which is shot one.

So, are we going to have a bloke walking?

Shall we have him walking round here? There we go.

-You just need the first bit of him.

-Yeah.

How do you think you're going to use the room in the future?

I kind of want to be a producer when I'm older,

so having this animation set is really going to be useful to me.

I've heard there's a lot of stages to it,

so I'm just going to go through all the stages and see how I do.

Is there anything you'd like to change?

I don't think there is, really. I like everything about it.

There's nothing I'd change. I like it that much.

How about you, Freya?

There's nothing I want to change. It looks brilliant.

I didn't know what to expect, and it looks really, really good,

so there's nothing I would change.

Well, that's just a few of my favourite bits

from I Want My Own Room.

But, sadly, for now it's over.

It's been frustrating, it's been frantic, it's been fraught,

but most of all it's been fun.

And that's because they turned their dreams of new rooms into reality.

And, you know, in the end it wasn't that hard, so get designing,

and maybe you could get a new room, too.
