It's time to meet today's dramatic design duo.

-I'm Kathryne.

-And I'm Suzie.

-BOTH: And we love performing.

-But we've got nowhere to practise.

-And we need our own room.

Alas, poor Yorick...

Kathryne and Suzie need more space for their drama and music.

So we're going to convince Mum to hand over the keys to the house.

-I'm not sure.

-Go on.

-Go on.

They'll be sharing their plans with a top designer...

That's a great idea.

..searching for big ideas in amazing places...

-What do you think?

-..and keeping Mum busy.

-OK, I'm going.

But with just four days to transform the space,

can the team create a dream room for the girls?

Yo!

Meet 11-year-old Kathryne and her sister, 10-year-old Suzie.

They're drama and music mad,

but have nowhere to practise because their bedrooms aren't big enough

-and Mum is always working in the lounge.

-Sshh!

So the girls have to come up with alternative places to rehearse,

which is far from ideal.

'I'm heading to Kathryne and Suzie's house

'to see if I can find a space they can transform.'

-Hi, Suzie. Hi, Kathryne.

-Hi, Lisa.

-Come on in.

Thank you very much.

-I'm guessing from the sign it's your room, Suzie?

-Yeah.

So what's the bad thing about it?

Cos we like acting, dancing and singing,

there's not enough room to perform.

Go on, then, try and do a dance move.

Oh! You nearly bopped me on the nose.

I see your point. There is not much room in here for performing.

-Is your room any bigger, Kathryne?

-Slightly, yes.

Is this right for practising in?

Not really cos there's like a space here and a space here,

and it's not really square so we can't practise in it.

So is there anywhere else in the house that might be good?

Well, we have a junk room downstairs full of boxes.

Oh, my ears have pricked up. Let's go and see.

Oh, my word! You were not kidding.

Look at all this stuff. What is it all?

Well, it's basically old toys that we don't need, Mum's work.

-There's a lot of stuff in here.

-It's a waste of space, really.

This could be a really good room.

Definitely potential for practising and performing,

-don't you think?

-Yeah.

Let's go and chat to Mum and see what she says.

So, the girls have nowhere to act, sing and dance in their house,

but I think the downstairs junk room

would be a perfect performance space.

Time to see if Mum will agree.

The girls' rooms are lovely, but they're just not big enough

for dancing and acting and music and performance.

So we've had a little look at the junk room,

which is a junk room-and-a-half!

But it's a decent space and if we cleared that out

and got rid of all that junk, it's a great space for you

-to perform and dance and sing in, wouldn't it?

-Yeah.

Need to show you the problems the girls have,

so we would like you to perform a play for us.

It's a musical version of Romeo and Juliet. Your lines are in there.

So if you can rehearse in the living room and the kitchen

and do the performance in Suzie's bedroom, that' be great.

-You do that. We're going to watch TV, aren't we, girls?

-Yeah.

-Ah!

-Oh, Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?

-Ssh!

-Mum, we're trying to watch television, thanks.

-Sorry, sorry.

To twinkle in their spheres until they return.

-Mum! We're trying to make a cup of tea!

SHE SHAKES THE TAMBOURINE Soft, what light through yonder window breaks.

It is the east and Juliet the sun.

Enough, Mum, before you do yourself an injury

-I think we'd better cut there. That wasn't very good, was it?

-No.

Do you see the problem, can you understand us now?

Perhaps we ought to look at some alternative space.

Yes, shall we stop behaving like sardines and get out of here?

Phew, that's better, there's a bit of space out here, isn't there?

So, Mum, do you agree to let Kathryne and Suzie

redesign your house in any way they choose to give them more space?

-I'm not sure.

-Go on.

-Go on.

-OK, then. Make a good job of it.

-Yes!

-Yes!

Kathryne and Suzie are now in control of their own room,

and they will have Mum running around working for them.

But the girls have just four days before they have to

hand back the house keys.

Helping them transform the space is I Want My Own Room designer,

Michelle Attlee.

She's an accomplished artist with a head full of crafty ideas to turn

Kathryne and Suzie's junk filled room

into a supercalifragilistic showbiz space.

OK, girls, so this is the room we are going to be transforming.

Have you had any ideas so far of how you can see the room looking

or anything you definitely really want to include?

We did have an idea of having a little stage.

That's a great idea, that's a really great idea.

And where did you want it?

-Just somewhere that doesn't take up all the space.

-OK.

Is there anything else that you'd really like?

Maybe a chill-out space as well.

So after you've done your performances,

you've finished the scene,

-you can sit back on your sofa relax and you're done for the day.

-Yeah.

With the girls' ideas flowing,

Michelle starts to draw out a room plan.

Whereabouts on this floor plan would you like to have your stage?

-Maybe, like, there.

-Cool.

Then we could put the piano next to it

so we can play music whilst at the same time being on the stage.

-Two bean bags there.

-Brilliant, that's a great idea.

Its already feels like quite a nice space, when you walk in.

Very different to the kind of clutter that's in the room now.

Kathryne and Suzie have got their design to the first stage.

But if it's going to be a real show-stopper,

they will need to play around with the finer details.

So Michelle is taking the girls to a local theatre

to get some grand ideas.

OK, girls, I've brought you here to this beautiful,

traditional theatre.

This is a kind of really flamboyant theatre, there's

lots of different bits of detail in here which might be able to help you.

-What do you think?

-I love the peachy colours on the wall

because I think that's really pretty.

-Let's go see the theatre for more inspiration?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

-Come on.

What do you think?

-That's amazing.

-That's impressive.

This was made 127 years ago by two Victorian designers.

Perhaps maybe a bit too grand to incorporate all these design

elements into your room, but I think it really helps to give us

a lot more inspiration for our space.

You can see the statues, more statues.

-Yeah.

-I think a stage area in our room would be really

helpful for our rehearsals, so we can practise.

-There's lots of lights.

-Yeah.

Maybe if we had not so bright lights, maybe sort of

mellower lights so they didn't shine in your face.

-It's really bright!

-Yes.

-Yes.

-Right in the eyes!

What do you think of this backdrop?

-It's a good idea, yeah.

-I like that idea.

Relax, take in the scenery for a bit.

So is there anything you notice from this level that you like?

-The ceiling is beautiful.

-The ceiling is gorgeous.

It's very comfortable, isn't it? You can sit back, relax,

watch a nice performance on the raised stage and feel quite chilled.

The trip to the theatre has been a dream for the girls.

Coming to the theatre has been really helpful

because we've seen all the inspirational ideas here.

I think the theatre is amazing because

it's full of interesting things and lots of gold and everything.

But it's been a bit of a nightmare for Michelle.

Today was great, they've seen so many different things.

But now I'm slightly concerned it's not all going to fit with the room.

I'm dealing with a room that's long and narrow.

To make the stage fit in that type of space is going to be very tricky.

So that's the main thing that concerns me at the moment.

So while Michelle works on that little problem,

back at the house, the girls are raising the curtain.

Right, girls, I think it's about time you got Mum started, don't you?

-Definitely. Go and put these on and tidy up the room.

-Will do.

Three, two, one - go!

-OK, I'm going.

-Hurry up.

-Come on, hurry up.

-I'm really hurrying up.

Try harder then.

I've made a hole.

Very small one.

-You've hardly done anything.

-I'm trying.

Too much talk.

Moving boxes of old toys and books is all very well,

but when it comes to moving old washing machines, well,

even we're not that mean.

So wee called in some friendly local removal men.

Mum, you've got to get that upstairs now!

Quick, quick - cope!

After tweaking the girls' room design, Michelle is back

and her eagle eyes have spotted something interesting.

Whilst you guys have been sorting your stuff,

I came across your old theatre programmes.

I think these would be fantastic to keep within your room.

So I've got a cunning little idea and I'm going to use these for it.

-What do you think?

-That sounds really cool.

-Yeah.

And with the room finally clear, it's time for Michelle to

bring Kathryne and Suzie up to speed on the room design.

Talk us through what we've got here.

The room has been divided up into two areas.

It actually works better having the stage going all the way

across the room, because it gives you a bit more space.

You will also notice that I've put the piano here,

so it will actually be on top of the stage,

so you will be able to incorporate it in your performances.

-What do you think of that, girls?

-I really like that idea.

-You like the piano being on the stage.

-Yeah, I love it.

So you've got your performance area.

When you finish performing and you feel like chilling out,

you hop over to this side of the room where there will be some

kind of funky seating, perhaps.

So you've seen Michelle's plan,

are you happy the way she's tweaked your design?

Yeah, we are really pleased with it. I really like it.

It's really good and it's got everything we wanted in it.

Girls, I'm really pleased you've got the faith.

So drama-crazy Kathryne and Suzie

were cooped up trying to practise and perform in their bedrooms.

But now that we've convinced mum to hand over the keys to the house,

the girls are transforming a downstairs junk room

into a drama den.

But will the I Want My Own Room team receive rave reviews

when the curtain is raised on the girls' new room?

It's day two,

and the I Want My Own Room team are up early to make a start.

For the duration of the room transformation,

the family are staying at a secret location away from the house.

The girls are keen to get back,

and already have a plan for the day's jobs.

The first thing on the list is to paint the walls,

so we can get that out of the way.

I can't wait to do the painting in the room

and bossing Mum around.

I'm feeling a bit jaded, to be perfectly honest!

After yesterday's box-shifting! Yeah.

But there's no let-up for Mum.

Guess who has to paint the entire room with a white undercoat?

You'll be needing this.

Gosh, OK.

Oh! Only joking!

AND you'll be needing this

I'd better get on with it, I've got four walls and ceiling to do.

I'd better make a start on this, hadn't I?

-Otherwise I'll be here all day.

-You need to go much faster.

-Do I?

-Oh, gosh, OK.

-You've missed it all up here.

I can still see the plaster.

I might have to do two coats, that will be eight walls and two ceilings.

-The roller's the wrong way round.

-Oh, dear.

-You've missed that bit.

Mum's doing all right,

but she's only done half of one wall

and we need all four doing.

How am I doing?

-Not very well.

-Oh, dear.

And with Mum put to work,

the girls can concentrate on the finer details of their stage

with Stuart, who's going to build it.

So what is it you're looking for in your room?

-We are looking for quite a high stage.

-High stage.

And a hard surface so we don't slip.

What sort of sizes?

Quite a big size, but not too big and not too small, really.

So you want lots of big spaces, lots more work for me.

With Mum hard at work,

the girls have headed to the local park with Michelle.

She has an idea to give their new space

another funky facelift with some theatre masks.

I've done these as examples.

So if you are doing a lion-based performance

you could make something like this.

Or I've done an elephant as another example.

And they are really, really simple to make.

-So do you fancy having a go?

-Yeah.

First of all, choose your card

and then we can draw out some shapes.

I love that shape over there, Suzie, for the eyes. That looks brilliant.

The next stage is to cut the mask out

and strengthen it, using a paper plate.

Whilst the girls get stuck in,

back in the room,

painter Andy can't mask his disappointment with Mum's work.

I need it finished in about an hour.

I'd better go faster!

-I'll be out of a job, Beverley.

-Oh, yeah, great!

The way you're going!

With the masks fully decorated, the last job is to measure out

and tie on some elastic to hold them in place.

Well, the only thing left is to try the masks on.

Let's see what they look like.

Kathryne, your's just looks so theatrical.

Really impressed.

Suzz, wow, your's is just so wacky - I love it!

Time for the girls to check up on Mum's progress.

-Woah!

-Wow!

Oh, my gosh, you've actually made a lot of progress.

I thought after your rude comments this morning that

I'd better get a wriggle on and get a few walls painted, so here we are.

You've actually done really well, I'm seriously impressed.

-Yeah!

-The room is looking really good

and we are really excited to see the colours on the walls.

And they're not the only ones hard at work.

The I Want My Own Room team pull out all the stops

to try to stay on schedule.

There's just two days to go and from now on the girls are banned

from the room because Michelle wants to keep the design details secret.

But she is confident she knows what she they want,

and it all revolves around the stage.

-Look at that!

-My gosh!

I've not seen it since it's been put in, it looks brilliant.

Pretty strong glue, I reckon.

With all the dancing they'll be doing on it,

it's got to be pretty strong. OK, into the back.

-I love that blue shiny.

-It looks great, doesn't it?

I'm so pleased with it.

Do you know what, when I was 10 years old,

Michelle, I would have given anything for this.

-Come on, come and have a jig.

-Are we going to do a breakdance?

# You can't touch this.

While we clown around, Mum is on her way to the local village hall

where there's a big surprise waiting for her.

What are we going to do with all this lot?

It's all the stuff that came out of the room.

It all needs sorting through to decide what she wants to keep

and what she wants to get rid of.

OK, I'd better make a start, I suppose.

While Mum has fun with that little lot,

Michelle wants to talk about the theatre programmes from

old plays that the girls have either seen or been in.

So, we've made these funky shelves which are going to

go into your room. What I thought would be a great idea

is for you both to add your stamp on them.

So we've got some of your old theatre programmes over there.

All we're going to do is tear them up, grab some PVA glue,

squash it all on the inside here and stick it down.

It's really simple.

-It's a really good idea.

-It sounds really cool.

I'm going to leave you in Lisa's capable hands

and get back off to the room. I'll see you later.

So what did you think when you first found out you were going to

-be able to get a room of your own?

-We were really excited.

So Mum is down at the hall today sorting through all that stuff,

and there was a lot of stuff there.

How do you think she'll get on?

Very well with her stuff but not with our stuff

because she doesn't think we need it any more.

Is she organised or not organised?

-Organised.

-Organised.

She strikes me as an organised mum.

And I'm not wrong. Mum is on a roll... Again!

That's one small step for Mum, one giant leap for room kind!

But don't take your foot off the gas just yet, Mum,

you need to step on it!

Hi, I think I'm in trouble, I need the girls.

You haven't seen the room for a while because you're not allowed in,

but there's loads of activity, people going in and out.

-How do you think it's going in there?

-Really well

because I hear lots of drilling, that's a good thing.

-It's a good sign there's definitely something going on!

-Yeah.

Say when you go in and see the final room,

if there's something that's not there, will you be disappointed?

I really want the stage to be there

because that's what we really thought about.

You'll have to wait and see! There's a while yet.

We need to get these shelves finished.

And Mum needs to get her sorting finished.

She seems to be getting a bit sidetracked.

Oh, I wonder what she's got there.

A magic wand. I think I can probably use this,

for the next hour or so. This will get it sorted out.

It looks like mum has worked her magic. And the girls' ripping

and sticking has done the trick with their shelves.

Girls, you're brilliant.

Time to head down to the hall and check up on Mum's handiwork.

Is there something you're not telling us?

-SHE LAUGHS It's just one of those things you can't get rid of!

-What are these?

-I do indeed.

I was talking about the stepper, not the wig.

-Yes, I do use the stepper.

-Fancy those in your room, girls?

No.

After a close inspection of Mum's work, she's given a big thumbs-up.

And while the keep box finds its new home,

the girls are thinking about tomorrow.

I can't wait to see the room tomorrow,

I can't wait to see it finished.

It's nearly time to have a look, so I'm going to say good night

and go to bed. And then it will soon get here, won't it?

But the I Want My Own Room team can't rest until the job is done.

There's little things that seem to take ages.

There's lots of little fiddly bits which really eat up into the day.

Hopefully it will get done, but you just never know.

So it's the final day.

Pretty much everything is in hand.

So I'm just kicking back, waiting for the girls to get home.

Only kidding - it's crazy in there!

The team are feeling the pressure.

There's still loads to do, but not much time left.

The girls' brand new sofa has arrived

but it's looking a bit worse for wear.

-We've got a cover for this?

I thought the grass stain was part of the design!

No, that is definitely not part of our design!

-It doesn't look very comfy.

to do his thing, but he needs to work in complete silence,

which could be quite challenging for the I Want My Own Room team.

Kathryne, Suzie and Mum are on their way back to the house

and the room is far from finished.

I really can't wait to see the room because I'm really excited

and I hope Michelle has done a really good job.

It's going to be different to how we last saw it

-so I'm a bit nervous.

-I feel sick with excitement.

I have absolutely no idea what these girls have put in that room at all.

But I'm so excited to see it, it will be fantastic.

It's a last minute dash

to get everything ready for the premiere performance.

Just four days ago dramatic duo Kathryne and Suzie

were penned in performers with nowhere to practise.

But we decided their box filled junk room would be the ideal

showbiz space.

So Michelle and the I Want My Own Room team set to work

and created a theatre of dreams.

With neat touches like a changeable backdrop, a custom made props box

and a secret trapdoor - this room is a real show-stopper.

But will the girls think it's a grand opening performance

or box office flop when the curtain's raised?

Well, that was a crazy four days

but the girls have created a dream performance space which

I have to confess would be my dream room when I was 10.

I'm so impressed by the finished design of the room.

It's absolutely beautiful. The girls are going to love it.

If I could sum up the room in three words, it would be epic,

awesome and unbelievable.
