the show where you create your dream space

in your family home.

If you find sharing a room "sew" annoying,

if you need space away from your

"knit-wit" brother, sister or parents,

well, the I Want My Own Room team

can "tailor" a room to your needs.

Parents, zip it.

Because on this show, the kids are in charge.

Meet today's design-tastic duo.

I'm Freya.

I'm Hattie.

-BOTH:

-We want our own room!

Sisters Freya and Hattie

are being driven mad, having no space to get art-and-crafty.

-So we persuade mum to give them the keys to the house.

-Yay!

A top designer works on their plans.

-Are you ready to get your hands a bit dirty and start helping me out?

-Yeah!

They get ideas at an animation workshop,

and the girls take charge of the team.

-Telling a load of adults what to do.

-Keep working! No chit-chatter.

They're as happy as Larry.

With just four days to transform the space,

will the team be able to create the design den of their dreams?

Voila.

11-year-old Freya and 9-year-old Hattie love to make things.

Freya is a dab hand with a needle and thread,

and Hattie is a budding filmmaker.

The girls live with their older sister Ella,

who gets a room of her own,

and ceramics designer Mum,

who has masses of space to go potty with her pottery.

Even cats Lola and Rose have more space than Freya and Hattie.

And this creative duo have had enough.

BUMP!

It's clear to me

I need to help Freya and Hattie find a space of their own.

-Hello, how are you doing?

-Good.

-Are we allowed to have a look round?

-Yeah, follow us.

This is our room.

Do you know what? It's a lovely room, isn't it?

-It's just got all our old stuff in it.

-It's cramped.

It'd be nice to have more space for it.

Is there anything particular you'd like to do in the space?

Well, we can't make any of our Plasticine models.

We have to do it on the floor,

but then we're not allowed to get Plasticine on the carpet,

because you can't get it off,

and Mum's not particularly happy with that.

I've got loads of sewing stuff,

but there's no room to do it,

so I don't do it any more.

You've convinced me you do need more space.

Let's have a look round the house. Where shall we go first?

-The attic.

-The attic.

-This way.

These steps are very...

they're not really...

-Are they quite heavy to get down?

-Yes.

-We wouldn't be able to reach.

So you'd need somebody else to pull them down for you. That's not good.

-Let's see what else we can find.

-OK.

-After you.

What's this room used for officially at the moment?

It's supposed to be our playroom,

but it's not really worked out.

-That TV's rubbish. It doesn't work.

-What is this, next to it?

-That's off our car.

-Our old car.

-I'm assuming that's not yours.

-That's definitely not ours.

Do you know what?

-I think we might have found our solution.

-Great!

-Come on, then.

So Freya and Hattie don't have enough space in their bedroom

for all their arts and crafts.

The abandoned front room could be perfect,

but will Mum agree to hand over the keys?

Hattie, Freya, we've had a good look in your bedroom.

It's pretty cramped, would you say?

-Yes.

-Yeah, definitely.

-Not much room to do what you want to do?

-No.

-Nope.

-Not at all.

Mum, they haven't got much room in there, have they?

No, but they have got the front room downstairs.

That is true, but we had a look in there as well.

There's a lot of clutter in there, isn't there?

There's a bit of old car in there.

Is there? Really? OK.

What we've done, Mum,

to prove to you how much the girls really do need their own space...

OK...

We've gone into their bedroom, measured the available floor space,

cut it in half, cos obviously they share that space,

-and hat works out at 3.2 square metres.

-Right.

Which is exactly what we have here.

So just to show you how difficult it is to live and work

in that space, we've put a chair and your ceramics and things in there

for you to have a go at it.

How do you think Mum's going to do, girls?

Oh, here we go!

-Oh, the transfers are going on the floor.

-Right.

The head's come out! No, your head's out, you have to stay in,

-that's cheating. Now you're caught up in the tape.

-Ouch.

-Oh dear.

Arrgh!

This is so entertaining.

So, come on, honestly,

what's it like working in that enclosed space?

Horrible. Really horrible!

-Shall we let Mum come out now?

-Yeah.

-Come on, then, Mum.

-Thank you.

So, Mum, do you agree to hand over control and the keys to the girls?

Uhh...

-Yes.

-Those are your very own house keys.

Do you agree to let Freya and Hattie redesign your home

in any way they choose

-to give them more space?

-Um...

DRUM ROLL

Oh...I suppose so.

There we go, yes!

So, Freya and Hattie are now in charge of designing their own room.

They'll get to tell Mum what to do,

and it all needs to be finished in just four days.

I think it's about time I took you to meet somebody

who's going to make all your design dreams come true.

-How does that sound?

-That sounds amazing.

I Want My Own Room designer Michelle Ackerley

is an accomplished artist, and her wide knowledge of craft techniques

makes her the ideal person to help Freya and Hattie

change their tired front room into a fabulous new design den.

I just want to get a sense of what this room is going to be used for.

What is the most important thing you want to get out of this room?

For me, I want to be a producer, so I want to make films.

So would you like there to be some kind of video camera station

-or something to do with video?

-A computer area, yeah.

I'm really intrigued by these little Plasticine models.

Tell me a bit more about these.

In our spare time, we make little Plasticine things.

We actually managed to sell them at a festival,

it was where we made £7 off these little things.

-Did you really?

-And we only sold like five.

We need a space for you to display them, or store them

so they won't get squished.

They need a place like a little box that you can see them in,

-See-through, then?

-Yes, definitely.

So if you could pick three things that are most important to you...

One of them would be

a nice comfy place for all our friends to be here, like a sofa

and...just to chill out.

Somewhere so I can work.

This desk is rubbish. It's got nothing. It's small and cramped.

-Just to be somewhere where it's just our own space.

-Yes.

OK, girls, I think I've got a really good idea now

of the types of things you want in this room,

so are you ready to get your hands a bit dirty and start helping me out?

-Yeah.

-Definitely.

-Come on, then.

First, Freya, Hattie and Michelle put on protective shirts.

This design could get messy.

So, girls, we're going to paint an outline of our design on the wall.

As we're painting over this wall, it doesn't matter,

but I don't want you two going paint crazy on any walls in this house.

-OK?

-OK.

-Let's get started.

With the outline of the room complete,

Michelle needs the girls' help to plan the layout.

If the window's there, what have you got here?

Those two archway things.

So do you want to paint in an arch each?

-Yep.

-Just so we know where they are.

It's good that you've got two different colours there,

because that gives us an idea - one could be Freya's

and one could be yours, Hattie.

-That's a really good idea.

-That's a good idea, yes.

I know how creative you both are,

how you're so arts-and-craftsy, always making different things.

How about having a type of wallpaper

which actually has sections that you can paint in,

that you can draw in, you can stick things on.

-That's a brilliant idea!

-It's a really good idea, yeah.

So it would be your own custom-made wallpaper.

-So we could draw on it ourselves?

-Exactly.

But this design den

won't be complete without space for their biggest passions,

Plasticine modelling and filmmaking.

So, to get some ideas,

Michelle is taking Freya and Hattie on a grand day out

to the National Media Museum,

home to some of Britain's best-loved TV and film animated characters.

This is amazing. It's just so real.

It's so cute, and the little books,

you just go, "Oh, wow!"

Michelle has organised for the girls

to make an animated film of their own,

so she can see for herself

the best way to incorporate these hobbies into their design den.

So you have to decide what kind of hair you want on them,

whether it's a boy or a girl.

What do you think you'll have?

I think it's going to look good.

The girls have had practise

making their own models, but they've never made them move.

So with lights, camera and a laptop,

it's a chance to bring their characters to life.

Whoo!

And after all their hard work,

they watch the finished film.

- Ah, that's brilliant! - Yeah?

-Awesome. I like the way the tears came out.

-That's brilliant.

This has given me a really, really good idea

for something to incorporate into their room.

They're so enthusiastic about this.

I'm hoping I can make it work.

-The animation workshop...

-Was brilliant!

The animation workshop's been a hit,

and Michelle knows it's something she must include in the design den,

so while she finalises the girls' room design,

it's time to get things started back at the house.

Yes!

First job is emptying the room

so they can start turning it into their design den,

so Freya and Hattie need to make sure Mum clears everything out.

And they don't have any time to waste.

Right, Mum, we want this mess cleaned up!

Mum's dressed for the part,

but she's on a go-slow.

Stop time-wasting.

So Freya and Hattie have got big sister Ella in to help.

Yeah, brilliant.

-Ella, stop time wasting!

-No joking around.

Where do you want him?

Shush! Stop talking!

We don't have all day.

Mum can stack her stuff up for now, but later she'll have to work out

what she wants to keep, give to charity, or recycle.

-You're doing all right, aren't you?

-Well done, Mum.

-Thank you, Freya.

Oh, the...

-Jenga's gone.

-Was that me?

I think Mum's bottom might have knocked Jenga over.

Oh, this is cool, isn't it?

This is like a kind of 70s hippie gear, isn't it?

SITAR MUSIC

Peace and love, man.

We have got a few helpers.

Show a bit of love for the Mum, OK, and the old sister,

-and shall we get some people in to help them out?

-Yes.

-Yeah.

Good decision, girls.

This is a big job, so the I Want My Own Room team knuckle down

to get the room cleared.

With the room now empty,

Michelle is keen to get the girls' approval on the final design.

Girls, looking at this room,

can you believe how big it looks without anything in it?

-Amazing.

-It's really big.

-Shall we have a look?

-Yes.

This is kind of the basic layout of the room,

and the main thing you girls have spoken about

is wanting your individual space,

so we've got alcove one

and alcove two,

and these are going to be assigned to each of you.

I think it'll be really great,

cos we've never had our own thing, we've always had to share.

You also mentioned you want the room to be really comfortable,

so here we're going to have a kind of special seating area.

We're going to have customised wallpaper,

so they can get stuck in writing on the wall.

That should be a bit of fun too.

-Are you excited about, girls?

-Yeah, really excited.

-There's no words.

So Freya and Hattie have no space to get creative,

but we've seen the potential in the front room,

and have convinced Mum to hand over the house keys.

The girls have got animated over their design ideas.

That clutter-filled room has been cleared.

But there's still a lot to do

before the girls get the design den of their dreams.

It's day two, and there's lots to do.

As Freya and Hattie are in charge,

it's down to them to get this building party started.

There's work to be done!

-I hereby declare this room ready to be designed.

-Let the work begin.

It's a race against the clock to turn the front room into a den,

so the girls are keeping a keen eye on the team.

The girls are in their element.

Things aren't going quite as smoothly in the front room.

As Mum bumbles on, the girls carry on regardless.

That was my favourite fairy dress ever.

At this rate, there'll be no wallpaper to put the photos on.

I may have just ripped this.

Luckily for Mum, there's help at hand.

So the girls and Michelle take a look at their handiwork.

As the work continues in the front room,

Michelle has a creative treat for the girls.

I have brought along

some very special material

with some people you might recognise.

Oh!

Oh, that's so cute.

So what we're going to do is make some cushion covers.

And these are going to be put

-in your brand-new room later on.

-Yay!

Michelle has used photos of the family cats,

Lola and Rose, to create images

that will be purr-fect for the seating area of their design den.

Are you excited?

It's so good.

If you want to make your own cushions, you could use any image.

Cats, dogs, or what about Grandma?

So we can see that kind of fits...

fits the shape of the cushion.

Most high-street or online photo shops

can print your pictures onto material.

Once you've cut out the picture...

Great, so you've got your shape.

..Sew it together. You can hand-sew or use a machine.

And stuff them.

Yay!

Double cat complete.

Hmm, I might make one of those myself later.

-Shall we go and put them inside?

-Yep.

-Definitely.

-Come on, then.

And it looks like I'm not the only fan.

"Oh, I'm so amazing, look at me!"

As day two draws to a close, there's still a lot to be done

and the I Want My Own Room team worked late into the night.

It's day three and Michelle wants to keep some details a surprise,

so from now on, the girls won't see the room.

But they're confident she knows what they want.

We've already told her stuff that we like.

So how can she get it wrong?

No pressure then, Michelle?

The girls want mum to sort through the clutter from the front room.

We want this mess cleaned up!

There's no space in the house, so she's been sent to the town hall.

Mom has to work out what she wants to keep, give to charity or junk.

It looks like this could take some time.

Where do I start?

Argghh!

As mum trawls through the stuff, back at the house

Michelle has rescued some material from the front room,

to make some fun, fabric doorstops.

This is the first bit, this is going to be the head.

So you got a nice big monster head.

You've got your shapes drawn on the material,

all you need to do next is cut them out.

-Yay, I cut it all out!

-well done!

I did it.

Is mum being as productive?

Look, a broken egg cup. That might come in handy.

-OK, this is the sewing bit.

-Don't go too fast.

Yay.

Pebble. Some dead butterflies.

This is the heavy duty bit, a bag of sand.

The best thing to do is put it in little sandwich bags

and then put it into your doorstop.

Otherwise there might be tiny little holes in the material

and then it'll just leak everywhere.

I don't think that's going to get any more in. If I'm honest.

It's looking brilliant.

What has mum decided she's going to throw away?

I'm going to throw these things.

An old glove and a bit of scrap paper.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

These colourful characters can be used to keep

the door open, or closed if they want to keep out unwanted mums.

Over at the town hall, Mum has roped Ella in to help

and still isn't making much progress.

It's time for me and the girls to check up on them.

Hello Ella and mum.

I think we're doing quite well. I'm being quite hard.

It doesn't look like it.

OK, this is our box of remote controls. One, two, three...

There are on average four remote controls per household

in the UK and that means there are about 104 million remote controls in Britain.

That's a lot of channel hopping.

They might come in handy.

All going in the junk. Bye, remote controls.

It's obvious Mum needs a little help,

and while she's not enjoying sorting all this stuff,

I love a good rummage.

-Do you think it suits me? This is quite this season.

-Turn around.

What's your favourite food? "Sausages". Why are the sausages doing the can-can?

What else would you have in a cookery book?

Back at the house, it's all go

and Michelle's special seating area is starting to take shape.

Meanwhile, with the girls in charge, the family motor through,

with Freya and Hattie only allowing mum to keep a small amount to go back to the house.

The rest is for charity and recycling.

I'm glad it's done. I could do with a nice cup of tea now.

-Are you pleased with what you've seen so far?

-Yes. We made progress.

I know the room is going to be really good.

Everything has gone to plan, it's brilliant.

It's the end of day three,

but the work is far from over for the I Want My Own Room team,

as they work into the night.

HAMMERING AND DRILLING

It's the morning of the final day and it's all hands on deck.

Including mine!

Voila!

Michelle, it's the last day, it's all got to be done.

Are you confident it'll happen?

It has to, so I've just got to crack on with it.

It's the last day and there's still so much to paint.

It's easy enough painting it, but it just takes so much longer to dry.

There's still things to install, hang up,

stick on, loads of different things.

Some of the things left to hang are Michelle's solution to

Freya and Hattie's request to be able to display their Plasticine models.

Michelle is using clear plastic domes and small lights,

so they have pride of place in a dazzling wall display.

With the paint dry,

the pressure is on to get the finishing touches done.

It just seems to be a never-ending list of things to do.

I'm still remaining positive, but I am pretty stressed.

The pressure is really on!

There are shelves to go up, the alcoves need to be finished,

pictures, light and blinds have to be hung.

-A nice pink blind, mate.

-It's very pink, isn't it?

And I'm on brew duty.

I know I'm coming to disturb you, but strictly speaking,

-the deadline is in 15 minutes.

-Yeah, I'll have to go like the clappers

to get things done in 15 minutes.

Not sure the girls can wait that long.

-Can't wait, can't wait.

-I just want to run to the house and look.

Don't rush back just yet, girls.

The team still have to apply the finishing touches.

And I have some finishing touches of my own.

Now the wait is over, the girls can finally return home.

So, the big moment has arrived. Hattie, how are you feeling?

-Mum, I should ask you how you are as well?

-I'm just desperate to see it.

THEY SQUEAL

Just a few days ago, arts and crafts addicts Freya and Hattie

were creatively cramped in the clutter of the family's front room.

But with the girls in charge, mum ditched the junk

and the I Want My Own Room team worked around the clock

to come up with the design den of Freya and Hattie's dreams.

Michelle has given the girls their own individual workstations

so they can get creative without driving each other crazy.

When not busy making and doing,

they can hang out with friends in the comfy corner they'd wanted.

After seeing how much fun Freya and Hattie had

at the animation Workshop,

Michelle has a special surprise with a unique area

for them to make their own model movies.

Under the girls' guidance,

Michelle has made what she hopes is a perfect design den for them

but does it have that all-important wow factor?

No peeking, no peeking!

-OK, are you ready?

-Yes!

What you think?

-This is the best room I've ever seen.

-Ever!

-Look!

We've put some of the Plasticine models you've made, displayed them.

There's the bed so your friends can chill out

and maybe stay over on there.

It's got everything.

This is the best thing ever.

And you can do your sewing there.

Hattie, you got one very similar over there.

I'm going to explode in a minute, seriously. This is amazing.

-Oh, thank you so much.

-Do you love it?

What will mum and Ella make of the changes in the front room?

Oh my God!

Is it what you expected?

No, I didn't know what to expect.

I knew it was not going to be not expectedable - is that a word?

It is now!

-Michelle, thank you so much.

-I just want to cuddle you!

This room is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

This room is amazing!

What I initially thought was going to be really straightforward

soon became really challenging.

But the team cracked it,

turning a horrible old room into a beautiful design den.

I think Freya and Hattie are two of the happiest girls I've ever seen.

We look in magazines, we look in things like that,

we wished, we wished we had a room like that.

And what did we get?

BOTH: A room like that. It was amazing!

It's absolutely beautiful, absolutely brilliant.

I love it, absolutely love it.

BOTH: We got our own room!

Oh, it's so cute!
