Hey, guys. So I really hope you enjoyed our version of | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
Worth The Wait. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:33
So right now we're just going to talk a bit about the difference | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
between singing background vocal and singing lead vocal. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
We're going to give you a bit of a demonstration with the song. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
Jenny and I sing together on the bridge. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
So here it goes. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
# Sometimes it's all right to | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
# Follow the sunlight | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
# I'm going west, going west for the weekend | 0:03:53 | 0:03:58
# Going west, going west for the weekend | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
# And sometimes the sunset is | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
# Better when you know that | 0:04:06 | 0:04:10
# You're going west, going west for the weekend | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
# Going west, going west for the weekend. # | 0:04:14 | 0:04:18
OK, so one of the things that I like to do when | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
I'm singing background vocal is I like to make the sound | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
sort of more in my head voice and breathy, | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
cos I think that that makes it blend really well. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
-For sure. -It just sits really nicely on top. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
Yeah, and when singing lead, you have to be strong, | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
but you also have to listen to the person singing backup | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
because you want to blend, and the point of singing lead | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
isn't to sing necessarily stronger than the person singing harmony, | 0:04:45 | 0:04:50
but it's to emphasise the melody with conviction. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:55
Yeah, and one of the things that really helps me to blend is, | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
sort of, making sure that we're matching vowel shapes. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
-Yeah, that's important. -So that we're saying the words the same way | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
and then that makes the voices blend really well, | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
-and then it sounds kind of like one voice... -Yeah. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
..on two different parts. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:10
-Sounds really nice. -It sounds harmonic. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:12 |
