Episode 5 Meet the Pups

Today on Meet The Pups,

Bonzo, Biscuit and Betsy at six weeks old

are becoming ever more curious and unruly.

Their sense of smell is fully developed

and they're into everything.

The first excitement of the day is a new bed.

But will they work out what it is?

Bonzo is the first to investigate the mysterious new object.

Mysterious? Hardly a flying saucer.

The others soon join in.

The puppies have absolutely no idea at all

what this new thing is for.

And I don't think Mum, Lola, is about to show them any time soon.

It looks like they haven't quite worked out

that you're supposed to sleep in the bed,

not next to it.

Lola is teaching her pups mostly by watching them,

or so it seems.

She's letting them play fight

so they can work out who will assume top dog status in their pack.

But what will dad Morgan's role be in all of this?

Morgan is allowed into the pup pen now

but the owners will be keeping a keen eye on him.

He's noticed that Bonzo has somehow stolen his favourite squeaky toy.

This should be interesting.

Morgan, play nicely now.

Morgan has taken the toy back and is teasing Bonzo with it.

Is this him teaching his son a lesson?

BONZO WHINES

Oh, come on, Dad, that's not fair!

Right, well, you can have it.

But don't take it again without asking. OK?

It's squeakalicious.

OK, you can play with it for as long as you like.

Thanks, Dad.

Morgan, what are you doing in there?

Eh, nothing, darling. Just making...

Well, putting Bonzo straight, you know. That's all.

So anyway, time to go.

Hope you learned a valuable lesson there, you know,

about the pack thing.

Yeah, Dad. Oi, did you take my ball?

Oh, where did that come from?

Mama, Dada's got my ball again!

Well, that's a very interesting way of teaching

you've got there, Morgan. I think somebody needs

to go and take a long, hard look at themselves in the mirror.

No, Bonzo, not you! No, I meant your father.

WOOF! WOOF!

-Morning - time to rise up, singing.

Or, if you're a dog, sniffing.

Oh! Oh, dear. Oh, no.

Oh, the joy of having an advanced sense of smell.

Not surprised it smells strong to you, Lola, your...

Hang on, hold that thought. I think I can smell bacon.

As I was saying,

a dog's nose can be up to 1,000 times more sensitive than our own.

That is a lot of whiff for your sniff.

For a dog, smell is their main sense organ

meaning that Bonzo and the pups are not only smelling the bacon,

they're forming a scent picture in their brains,

one that they'll never forget.

And that's not the only scent the pups can smell in the kitchen.

The puppies are following their noses

and leaving chaos in their wake.

It seems this lot really can sniff out trouble.

It's a good job the owners are watching them day and night.

Morgan, what are you doing?

Eh...discipline!

Of course, yeah, I knew that.

Morgan is teaching Biscuit her place

by facing down her cheeky challenges.

When Biscuit submits,

by rolling over and exposing her belly and her throat like that,

she's saying, "OK, you're the boss."

It strengthens their bonds

and keeps order in the hierarchy of the family pack.

Oh, you make it sound so complicated.

We just play and that's how we learn!

Oh, I see!

Yeah, and I pee!

That's one for you to clear up.

Looks like there's lessons still to be learned.

But at least someone

seems to have worked out what the bed's for.

Having a puppy is a huge, time-consuming responsibility.
