Recycling My First

This is Logan and he is four years old.

What are you doing?

Logan likes to play with his trucks.

What do we put in it?

-Put bin rubbish in.

-They do. They put the rubbish in that, don't they?

-Do you want to come and see what is down here and have a play?

-OK.

Today, Logan is going to do something new for the first time,

but what will that be?

This is Logan's memory box.

It helps him remember all the exciting things that have happened.

See if you can spot what goes in it today.

Just in time.

It's bin day and Logan and his mum are putting out all the rubbish.

Pop it down. Stand back.

Look at all the different bins that need to be emptied.

Hi, Logan. Doing the recycling. Well done.

There goes the paper.

-Thank you.

-Is that ours?

Now it's time to empty the bin that is full of glass.

He's going to put the recycling in.

They use these bins for the recycling.

The driver has a surprise for Logan.

Do you want to sit in the wagon?

Do you want to have a look inside? Go and turn it off?

Logan gets to sit in the driver's cab.

Where do you tip it?

We go and take it up to a big building

and it gets taken and it gets sorted again.

So all the hard work you are doing, we use it again.

Logan, do you have any toys like this truck?

-A big one.

-You've got a big one?

-Yes.

-Does the back go up?

-Yes.

Does it push all the rubbish out? Do you pretend it's got rubbish in?

-Yes. I've got real rubbish. Cotton wool.

-Some materials.

-Glass.

-And paper. Yes.

The first thing to go into Logan's memory box is the recycling truck.

Don't forget to put the bins back, Logan.

Recycling is when we re-use things we no longer need.

We can recycle lots of things around the house, like paper, glass,

plastic jars and metal cans.

They can all be turned into something else.

It means we don't waste so many things.

Recycling is good, as it helps protect the world around us.

Logan wants to do his own recycling,

but he needs his own bins to put it in.

He's come to a place that takes everyday objects and reuses them.

This is Ruth and she helps make new things out of old things.

-Hi. Is there something that you are looking to make today?

-Bin monster.

Bin monster? Well, if you follow me,

I'll show you where all the stuff is that you will need.

Look at all this stuff. I'm sure you could make a bin monster with this.

The first thing Logan needs is a bucket to make his bins.

-Bins!

-Yes. Why don't you have the one with the handle?

-Pop some hair in it.

-What are you going to do with that, Logan?

We can always come and get some more after. Lovely.

Will you pop some in mine, please?

-What's next, Logan?

-Now I've got the beard.

-You've got the beard?

-It looks like you've found some eyes.

-We'll pop those in yours.

I wonder what Logan will use the cardboard for.

Now we have everything we need to build some bin monsters.

Spread your fingers like this. Let's make monster hands.

The hands will be made with the cardboard.

-No, that one is going to be for paper.

-Paper. This one paper.

So, which is this one? Metal or plastic?

-Plastic.

-Plastic. So that one is metal.

-Yes.

-OK.

Three eyes for the paper recycling monster.

-So many things that we can re-use again.

-OK, I've got a mouth.

Would you like the mouth?

He's got an open mouth.

And then a closed mouth.

Really sticky, aren't they?

Ruth comes to see what Logan has made.

That is for plastic bottles.

That's paper and that is metal, plastic bottles.

The monster's hair looks really funky.

-Shall we go and find some stuff to recycle?

-Yeah.

Good job, Logan.

I'm sure those recycling monsters will gobble up your rubbish.

The second thing into the memory box are the bin monsters.

OK. Now we've made your bins, which one was which again?

That one was plastic.

That one was metal

-and that one was...

-Cardboard.

-Yeah.

-We haven't got cardboard, have we?

OK. Where do we get cardboard?

-Toilet.

-Yeah, we find some in the toilet roll, don't we? OK, let's go.

Great. Get them. Let's put them in the cardboard monster.

Well done.

I wonder what is going in the second bin monster.

Some of my plastic planters.

-What's that?

-Plastic.

-There's one.

Brilliant. OK, come around here.

-Any more?

-There's one.

OK, great. Right, let's go and put them in the monster.

OK, put it in the plastic monster, the yellow one.

OK, so, we've got cardboard monster.

He's got some.

The plastic monster has got some.

-Has the metal monster got any?

-No.

-We have to find some metal for the metal monster, don't we?

-Let's go.

What do you think, where the metal will be? Where would it be?

-The kitchen.

-Brilliant. Let's go.

-OK.

-What comes in that tin?

-Beans.

Beans. Brilliant. And that's metal.

-Let's go and put it in the monster.

-No.

-No?

Come on. He's hungry. He's got nothing in him.

I guess the metal monster will be happy with that bean tin.

Gobble, gobble, gobble.

The third thing in the memory box is the recycling.

Logan has come to the recycling centre with his mum

to empty his bin monsters.

-So, we've come to do our recycling now.

-Yeah.

-Shall we do the cardboard first?

-This one.

-OK. Great. Oh, look.

That says cardboard.

Look at all these boxes.

-Right, shall we go and do the other things?

-Yep.

-Good lad.

Which monster will be next?

-The plastic or the metal?

-Ready?

-Tip them out.

-It's the metal.

Yeah. Brilliant.

Let's go and do the plastic. Last one.

OK, hard plastics.

Oh, good.

Now they are emptied, your recycling monsters can be filled up again.

I wonder where all the plastic goes from here.

In order that our rubbish can be recycled,

it all has to get processed.

That means separating everything into the right piles,

like metal and paper so it can then be turned into something new,

like tin cans and paper cups.

Logan has come to see where his recycling will end up.

As there are lots of big trucks,

Logan has to wear a hard hat

and bright vest so the drivers can see him.

Wow. This place is massive.

This is where they separate the general waste and recycling.

The first thing to get loaded up is everything that can't be recycled.

The man that's sat in it is going to pick that general waste

up in the bucket like he's got there now.

He's going to tip it in the top of the HGV wagon.

Ah, look. It's the recycling truck from this morning.

Let's see what they are doing.

The truck is emptying. Can you see what is coming out?

Milk bottles, cans, plastic bottles.

We put some milk bottles in at the tip, didn't we? We recycled.

-It's all in there now.

-It's going to start tipping. Wow.

That's right. All the plastics.

But wait, where are cardboard and paper?

Oh, wow.

Ah, they are in the other half of the truck.

Look how much paper there is.

-Do you think our egg cup and toilet rolls are in there?

-Yes.

-Yes.

Now it's been sorted, it's going to be made into new things.

The fourth thing in the memory box

is the truck from the recycling centre.

Today, Logan went recycling.
