This story belongs to Kirra and her Uncle Wayne.

0:00:210:00:26

It's a tiny tale about Uncle Wayne's life

0:00:320:00:35

and the things he used to do.

0:00:350:00:38

You watch this.

0:00:380:00:39

Look at those! Yee-hah.

0:00:390:00:41

Yogi... What's that?

0:00:420:00:44

Yogi?

0:00:470:00:48

There you go.

0:00:530:00:54

Now it's time for Uncle Wayne to share his memories,

0:00:580:01:01

and take Kirra on a journey of discovery.

0:01:010:01:05

Kirra and Uncle Wayne live on the east coast of Australia,

0:01:130:01:17

which is a big country

0:01:170:01:20

a long way from the United Kingdom.

0:01:200:01:22

Australia is famous for its many amazing animals -

0:01:220:01:27

cute koala bears,

0:01:270:01:29

jumping kangaroos

0:01:290:01:31

and the amazing birds!

0:01:310:01:34

Australia is also famous for its beaches

0:01:350:01:38

and its big, big waves,

0:01:380:01:39

which is great for surfers.

0:01:390:01:42

And Uncle Wayne is a surfer.

0:01:420:01:44

Look, he's standing on top of a surfboard

0:01:460:01:48

and he's riding the waves -

0:01:480:01:50

this is called surfing.

0:01:500:01:53

THEY LAUGH

0:01:550:01:56

Wayne is going to show Kirra his very first surfboard.

0:01:560:01:59

It looks very old, doesn't it?

0:02:010:02:04

So, Kirra, when I was young I learnt to ride the board,

0:02:040:02:08

and my dad made the board for me when I was really young

0:02:080:02:12

and I learned to ride the waves.

0:02:120:02:14

What's it made of?

0:02:140:02:15

It's made out of wood.

0:02:150:02:17

Look at these old pictures of Wayne

0:02:170:02:19

with his very first surfboard when he was seven years old.

0:02:190:02:22

Here he is having fun on the board

0:02:240:02:26

with his little brother Robbie.

0:02:260:02:28

Uncle Wayne's love of surfing and the ocean

0:02:280:02:31

came from his dad John,

0:02:310:02:33

who was a lifeguard on the beach in Australia.

0:02:330:02:36

Uncle Wayne's family have lived in Australia for a very long time.

0:02:360:02:39

They sailed here from England a long, long time ago.

0:02:390:02:43

The journey would've taken them several months.

0:02:430:02:47

Imagine being stuck on a big ship like this

0:02:470:02:49

for all that time!

0:02:490:02:51

Uncle Wayne's great-great-grandfather John

0:02:530:02:57

was actually born on the big ship

0:02:570:02:58

that brought his family to Australia.

0:02:580:03:02

Lots of people have been coming to Australia from the UK

0:03:020:03:05

and other parts of the world for a very long time.

0:03:050:03:09

Most people build sand castles on the beach,

0:03:230:03:27

but Kirra and Uncle Wayne are building a sand surfboard.

0:03:270:03:31

This beach is called Kirra Beach.

0:03:310:03:34

Do you know what's so special about this beach?

0:03:360:03:39

I'm named after it?

0:03:390:03:42

That's right! You're named after it.

0:03:420:03:44

And it's a very famous surfing beach.

0:03:440:03:46

-Did you know that?

-No. I never knew that.

0:03:460:03:49

Well, yeah. There's lots of good waves at Kirra Beach.

0:03:490:03:52

Look at those waves!

0:03:520:03:55

This beach is special to Uncle Wayne for another reason, too.

0:03:550:03:59

When I was about 11 years old

0:03:590:04:01

my father brought me here

0:04:010:04:02

and I went in a surfing competition.

0:04:020:04:05

My very first surfing competition.

0:04:050:04:07

What did you have to do in the surfing competition?

0:04:070:04:09

Well, you have to paddle out into the surf

0:04:090:04:12

and ride waves to the shore,

0:04:120:04:15

and whoever rides the waves the best

0:04:150:04:17

gets to go through to the next heat.

0:04:170:04:19

Uncle Wayne went on to enter lots more surfing competitions

0:04:190:04:22

as he got older,

0:04:220:04:24

and started winning trophies.

0:04:240:04:26

He learned how to surf bigger and bigger waves

0:04:260:04:29

and travelled the world entering surfing competitions.

0:04:290:04:33

I have won many trophies for surfing.

0:04:370:04:40

My most special trophy was becoming

0:04:400:04:43

World Long Board Champion in Japan.

0:04:430:04:47

Wow! It must be brilliant being a world champion.

0:04:480:04:52

Hey, Uncle Wayne, will I be able to jump on a surfboard?

0:04:520:04:56

Yeah, let's try that. That'd be fun!

0:04:560:04:59

Cool. A surfboard made from sand!

0:04:590:05:02

Yeah, you're on a wave now! Off you go!

0:05:050:05:07

Wooooh...!

0:05:070:05:08

Uncle Wayne doesn't just make surfboards out of sand,

0:05:100:05:15

he makes real ones, too.

0:05:150:05:17

Look at how brightly coloured they are.

0:05:170:05:20

Well, Kirra, this is Uncle Wayne's workshop.

0:05:210:05:24

This is where we make all sorts of boards.

0:05:240:05:26

We make long boards, and short boards.

0:05:260:05:29

Why are all the boards different sizes?

0:05:290:05:31

Well, people have different sized boards for different sized waves.

0:05:310:05:35

We make long boards for when the waves are small,

0:05:350:05:38

so people can have lots of fun.

0:05:380:05:42

Then the boards get shorter,

0:05:420:05:44

so we can do lots of tricks.

0:05:440:05:46

Surfboards have changed a lot over the years.

0:05:490:05:51

They used to be made from solid wood, which was very heavy.

0:05:510:05:55

People learned, by using lighter materials,

0:05:550:05:57

they could make the boards go faster.

0:05:570:06:01

They also added fins like this,

0:06:010:06:03

to help surfers control how they could move on the waves.

0:06:030:06:06

Sometimes when I build surfboards we paint them and put designs on them.

0:06:110:06:16

Would you like to paint one of the surfboards?

0:06:160:06:19

-Yeah, it'd be great fun.

-Yeah.

0:06:190:06:22

They are drawing their design onto the board first.

0:06:220:06:25

What colour are we going to do the wave?

0:06:250:06:27

-Blue would look nice.

-OK.

0:06:270:06:30

Now, put it on inside your lines, and paint the board.

0:06:300:06:34

That's a girl.

0:06:340:06:36

Good girl.

0:06:380:06:40

OK, that'll do. How about that?

0:06:470:06:50

What colour do you think we should paint the person, Kirra?

0:06:590:07:03

-Green.

-Wow, that'd look good, wouldn't it? There you go.

0:07:030:07:07

Kirra, you could come and paint boards with me any time you like.

0:07:100:07:14

Great!

0:07:140:07:16

Nice board, Kirra. Looking good.

0:07:160:07:18

Now it's time for Kirra's surfing lesson.

0:07:230:07:26

Look at the seagull.

0:07:330:07:34

You know, when I was a young boy,

0:07:410:07:43

surfing was a new sport in Australia.

0:07:430:07:46

How did you know what to do?

0:07:460:07:48

We'd watch other people ride the waves

0:07:480:07:50

and try to do what they did.

0:07:500:07:52

So, let's have a lesson.

0:07:520:07:54

-What do you think, Kirra?

-Yeah, it will be great fun.

-OK!

0:07:540:07:57

OK, Kirra, let's start this lesson.

0:07:580:08:01

First, I'll show you where to lie on the board,

0:08:010:08:04

then you can follow what I do, as I get back up. OK?

0:08:040:08:07

So get down on the board.

0:08:070:08:09

You lie on the board like that, OK?

0:08:090:08:12

You ready? Get down... and we lie on the surfboard.

0:08:140:08:16

Put your hands on the rail

0:08:160:08:18

and lie on the board like that. OK?

0:08:180:08:21

How does that feel? Is that good?

0:08:210:08:23

Maybe just go forward a bit more.

0:08:230:08:25

So we paddle, we put our hands out from the surfboard

0:08:250:08:28

and we paddle like that.

0:08:280:08:29

When we're catching a wave,

0:08:290:08:31

we put our hands on the rail there,

0:08:310:08:34

and we stand up slowly like that.

0:08:340:08:36

Put your back foot down, put your right foot down, and we stand up.

0:08:360:08:41

Whoa! How about that?

0:08:410:08:43

We're on a wave now.

0:08:430:08:45

And you ride the wave to the shore and then jump off like that!

0:08:450:08:49

There you go!

0:08:490:08:50

Well done, Kirra! You'll be surfing those waves in no time!

0:08:520:08:57

Nowadays, people surf in lots of countries around the world

0:09:010:09:05

including here in the UK.

0:09:050:09:07

But people started surfing on the islands of Hawaii

0:09:110:09:14

hundreds of years ago.

0:09:140:09:16

Hawaiian chiefs surfed big waves

0:09:160:09:19

to prove how powerful they were.

0:09:190:09:21

Surfing was made popular in Australia by a Hawaiian

0:09:220:09:25

called Duke Kahanamoku,

0:09:250:09:28

who won gold medals for swimming at the Olympic Games.

0:09:280:09:32

On a visit to Australia, Duke wanted to go surfing

0:09:320:09:35

but not many people surfed there back then,

0:09:350:09:38

so he made his own surfboard and showed people how to surf.

0:09:380:09:43

Soon lots of people in Australia knew how to surf

0:09:430:09:46

and love doing it.

0:09:460:09:48

Just like Uncle Wayne.

0:09:480:09:50

Nowadays, some daring dogs even learn to surf, too!

0:09:530:09:57

Woof woof!

0:09:570:09:59

Let's get back to the beach.

0:10:050:10:07

Wow, look at us!

0:10:120:10:14

We're ready to hit the water.

0:10:140:10:16

-Let's go, Kirra!

-Let's go!

0:10:160:10:18

Kirra is wearing a special wet suit to go into the water.

0:10:200:10:24

And there is Demi, the lifeguard,

0:10:250:10:29

just making sure everybody is safe.

0:10:290:10:31

Jump over those waves!

0:10:330:10:34

Good luck, Kirra!

0:10:370:10:39

Do you know how to do push-ups, Kirra?

0:10:400:10:43

Here, you're up on this little one.

0:10:430:10:45

Here comes the wave - she's on, and she's riding the wave!

0:10:450:10:49

Wow-wee! Fantastic!

0:10:490:10:52

Back out to sea to catch another one.

0:10:580:11:01

Well done!

0:11:020:11:04

Bit more practice, and you'll be as good as Uncle Wayne!

0:11:040:11:08

Kirra's back on shore with her daddy watching Uncle Wayne in action.

0:11:140:11:18

And away he goes!

0:11:200:11:23

Oh, there goes Uncle Wayne!

0:11:230:11:25

Look at that fancy footwork!

0:11:250:11:28

Here comes a wave.

0:11:340:11:36

And he is on his feet!

0:11:380:11:40

Uncle Wayne makes surfing look easy.

0:11:450:11:48

Oh, I wish I could go surfing in Australia.

0:11:580:12:00

Kirra, it's been great spending time with you,

0:12:070:12:10

teaching you about surfboards and all about the ocean.

0:12:100:12:13

'It was great fun.

0:12:130:12:14

'We blew some bubbles.

0:12:150:12:18

'We looked at your old wooden surfboard.

0:12:190:12:23

'We made a surfboard sand castle.'

0:12:260:12:29

It's looking good!

0:12:290:12:32

'We played in the sand.'

0:12:320:12:34

There you go.

0:12:350:12:37

'We painted a big wave on the board.'

0:12:370:12:40

Kirra, you could come and paint boards with me any time you like!

0:12:400:12:44

Great.

0:12:440:12:45

'Uncle Wayne gave me a surf lesson.'

0:12:450:12:48

So we paddle, we put our hands out from the surfboard

0:12:480:12:51

and we paddle like that.

0:12:510:12:53

Lay down at the back of the board.

0:12:530:12:55

'I went surfing.

0:12:550:12:57

'I caught some waves.

0:12:580:13:01

'I watched Uncle Wayne surf.'

0:13:030:13:06

Oh, there goes Uncle Wayne!

0:13:070:13:09

What's been your favourite part?

0:13:130:13:16

My favourite part was painting the surfboard.

0:13:160:13:19

That was great, wasn't it?

0:13:190:13:21

Remember we painted the little man on the surfboard?

0:13:210:13:24

He looked good, didn't he?

0:13:240:13:26

What was your favourite part?

0:13:260:13:28

My favourite part was when we were at the beach

0:13:280:13:31

and catching those waves!

0:13:310:13:34

Can I get a big hug?

0:13:370:13:39

What a fabulous heap of fun!

0:13:440:13:47

That was Kirra and Uncle Wayne's tiny tale

0:13:470:13:50

about being a surfer.

0:13:500:13:52

Now Uncle Wayne has shared his story with Kirra,

0:13:520:13:55

it's time for Kirra to start her own story.

0:13:550:13:59

Do you know someone with a story to share?
