-Kampala is the capital city.

-It is the source of the Nile,

-the longest river in the world.

-A poor country, its inhabitants

-living on less than 75 pence a day.

-The Newid Byd team - Iestyn, Luis,

-Ceri, Rachel and leader Arwel....

-..has reached the rural location

-of Kumi, to the north of Mbale.

-They have been given the task

-of building a goat shed...

-..which will set

-a good example for local farmers.

-The goats in Uganda

-are weak and fragile.

-Dolen Ffermio

-is trying to develop breeds...

-..that are bigger so that when

-it comes to selling the meat...

-..or the goats' milk...

-..they will get more money

-because the quality is better.

-It's an advantage

-that this shed is off the ground...

-..and that there are gaps in the

-floor for the poo and it has a roof.

-The water will then flow into the

-gutters and into a storage tank.

-We have no building experience

-but we learnt a few new skills...

-..while we

-were repairing doors in Mbale...

-..and building a bathroom.

-We met a group of women

-who had HIV and AIDS.

-We also met Madina and her family...

-..and observed her way of life.

-I admired her for being able

-to look after 15 children.

-Up to now we've worked with

-children and young people.

-Now we're working with animals.

-I thought we were

-going to be building a shed.

-A common garden shed

-is easy enough to build...

-..but it's not as easy here.

-Time is against us

-and it has to set a good example.

-The team is under pressure.

-The foundations and posts

-are in place.

-The floor is coming along nicely.

-What? Is it all over my face?

-It doesn't come off.

-Is my face black now? No!

-87% of Uganda's

-population live in rural areas.

-Most of them farm around five acres

-of land, which is a small area...

-..compared to farmers in Wales.

-Dolen Ffermio is keen to

-make the most of what they have.

-The team is building on

-Robert and Opio's family farmland.

-The family's background

-is incredibly sad.

-They have many children

-but some of them have died.

-Both the parents have HIV...

-..so our support

-is going to help them a lot.

-Our biggest challenge

-at the moment is the heat.

-It's difficult working

-in this intense heat.

-The shed is coming together now.

-The floor is almost finished.

-While the rest of the team

-continues with the building work...

-..Luis is going to learn more about

-the advantages of a good shed...

-..by visiting Moses

-on a nearby farm.

-He assists Dolen Ffermio's work.

-I have a total of 170 goats.

-Moses has created a model farm...

-..in order to show the community

-how the goats should be cared for...

-..and fed and so on.

-The goat is one of

-the best animals that can be kept.

-Moses runs a scheme whereby he gives

-a goat free of charge to farmers.

-Once it has bred,

-he takes back one of the kids...

-..while the family keeps the rest.

-A goat has three or four babies,

-so if they give one to Moses...

-..they get to keep three,

-and at 25 each...

-..that's 75 for the family

-to buy food or more goats.

-The other thing

-I wanted to tell you...

-..is that with the goats,

-they need better shelter.

-He's built four goat sheds.

-These sheds are functional...

-..because they're off the ground

-and the slats on the floor...

-..allow the droppings

-to fall through them.

-It also has a roof, so it

-stops the goats from getting wet.

-Air is able to circulate,

-so they get plenty of fresh air.

-Luis decides he can't leave

-without catching a goat for himself.

-It's harder than it looks.

-It's tricky.

-I've caught one!

-I think the trip will change me.

-For the better, I hope.

-I hope he'll appreciate

-there are people...

-..that are not as well off as him.

-I hope that will make him realize

-how lucky he is here.

-Hopefully he'll make a difference

-when he's out there.

-It's possible

-for one man to change the world.

-If everybody thought that way,

-then the world could change.

-If every individual

-did something to help someone...

-..then everyone

-is helping to change the world.

-Back on site

-and the shed is taking shape.

-The floor is in place

-and the roof is being assembled.

-But it's late afternoon...

-..and they must finish the roof

-before it gets dark.

-Today has been

-both a good day and a bad day.

-We had trouble

-finding the site this morning.

-The wood hadn't arrived on time...

-..and neither had the water tank.

-The man who was meant to help here

-was busy fetching things.

-I'm having fun but it's hard work.

-The nails and the wood

-are hard to work with.

-But we've

-actually assembled a frame now.

-I'm enjoying it but I'm not

-used to doing manual work like this.

-I'm finding it difficult at times.

-We're hoping to finish the roof...

-..but I can't see how we're going to

-complete it by the end of the day.

-The following day the team

-is keen to make up for lost time.

-They're intent

-on finishing the roof.

-I think we've managed to catch up.

-We're where we want to be right now.

-We have to persevere.

-We've finished the roof and

-we've almost finished the sides.

-It looks good enough for goats.

-I definitely think

-our building skills have improved.

-I'm certainly better

-at using a hammer.

-We're all

-working together as a team...

-..and things are

-quickly coming along.

-One of those helped by

-the Dolen Ffermio project...

-..is Robert and his family.

-They have three sons, the oldest

-of whom is Joseph who's 11.

-The family was given a goat as

-a gift from Dolen Ffermio in 2007.

-The goats have multiplied by now.

-So far I've kept this animal

-and I'm still having.

-So three goats.

-Dolen Ffermio

-has helped Robert and his family...

-..by giving him

-one goat to start with.

-It's helped him more than you think

-because the goat has bred...

-..and he's been able to

-sell the goats to buy a cow.

-The cow has produced a calf, and

-he's waiting for the calf to grow...

-..so that he can be bred.

-He's earning money

-by collecting animals.

-He hopes that the income generated

-from keeping the animals...

-..will pay for

-his children's schooling.

-What would you like to do as a job?

-HE INTERPRETS

-that he would like to be a doctor.

-to finish the shed on time?

-He said that he knows

-I'm quite a materialistic person...

-..when I'm at home -

-I like earning money and spending it

-on things I don't really need.

-I hope it'll change her so that

-she won't want so many things...

-..like make-up.

-I hope she realizes she doesn't need

-so many things and can live on less.

-It's a reality check

-to go to somewhere like that.

-It'll be easier to cope in Uganda

-because we know we're there...

-..to give something to the community

-that will benefit them.

-That's the purpose

-of the whole experience.

-The shed is almost complete with the

-most important part left till last.

-The team has created

-a water storage tank...

-..that will

-provide enough for the goats.

-The wives spend hours walking

-to the nearest well every day...

-..to fetch water for their animals

-as well as themselves.

-Rachel and Iestyn

-have joined them...

-..to see how difficult a task it is.

-How often do you do this?

-Five times. It's hard work.

-How much water

-do you use with the animals?

-About three jerry cans.

-Three jerry cans just for

-the animals? That's a lot of water.

-Gosh, this is heavy already.

-I can't pick it up out of the water.

-This is heavy. Whoa!

-They're all laughing at me now.

-but they do this every day.

-that's not a resort.

-can change the whole world...

-..but one person can influence

-others to change the world.

-and I have mud all over my face.

-just to keep the family going.

-for doing this five times a day...

-how ill or weak they must be.

-We've just done it once

-and we're sweating streams.

-I doubt I could do it again.

-Robert, the team positions a tank...

-..to collect rainwater

-from the shed roof.

-This water tank

-holds about 250 litres of water.

-The rainwater will flow down

-the guttering into the tank below.

-It's going to be

-a big help for the family.

-It hasn't rained here for

-almost 60 days - around two months.

-This will save them a lot of time

-and energy in this intense heat.

-It's the final day and storm clouds

-are gathering above the crew.

-They must finish the shed in time.

-They hurry

-to erect the sides, make a door...

-..and build a platform

-for the water storage tank.

-Mixing cement

-is Rachel and Iestyn's task.

-Just pretend we're making a cake.

-A sponge cake.

-You fold it in

-and just fluff it up a bit.

-The cake is ready for the oven.

-We need a blender.

-How does it go again?

-With time running out, they

-call on the locals to help them.

-Three full days of hard, physical

-labour in the sweltering heat...

-..and the shed is complete.

-Robert the farmer is pleased.

-For me, a good job.

-Nicely. And I congratulate them.

-All farmers from this place will

-come and see how we have done here.

-A good farm,

-a good house for my goats.

-One more job left to do.

-There's not enough space.

-I've enjoyed building this shed.

-It's been lots of fun.

-At first I didn't think

-it was possible to build a shed.

-At times we've had fun...

-..and other times we've found it

-really hard due to the heat.

-I'm proud of what we've built but I

-can't say I'd want to do it again!

-The reason for building it got us

-through when we wanted to give up.

-I never thought we could

-build something as good as this.

-We should be proud of each other.

-I think the goats

-will be very happy here.

-and it's off the ground.

-We've achieved

-what we set out to do.

-I won't say I enjoyed everything

-about it because that sounds cheesy!

-This has been the best project

-so far. I've had so much fun.

-I'm glad we completed
