Now, today we're going to find out how much sugar is in food.

I've got some leftovers from my lunch - there's some fish,

some dried banana, and some jelly bears which were a special treat!

You can't tell how much sugar's in each just by looking,

so I need something else to help me, and I have just the thing.

In these tubes is a chemical called potassium chlorate,

and we have to be careful, because when it mixes with sugar,

something very unusual happens! So, let's try our fish first.

Now, do we think there's any sugar in this fish?

ALL: No!

Well, let's see!

OK, I'm just gonna pop it into our test tube... Oh!

I'll just need the stirring rod, Gaby.

Oh!

There's no sugar in fish, and we know that

because nothing happened! Fantastic!

We're moving on to the dried banana.

Do you think there's any sugar in here?

ALL: No!

Well, I'm not sure. Let's have a look.

Oh!

Brilliant! There must have been sugar in the dried banana,

cos when it mixed with the chemical, it went up in flames!

Now, last but not least, let's try the jelly bear!

Do we think there's sugar in the jelly bear?

ALL: Yes!

I think you're right, so I might stand back, OK?

Go on, jelly bear!

Oh, here it goes!

Woo!

It's burning brightly, isn't it?

ALL: Yeah!

Isn't that brilliant? There must be loads of sugar in the jelly bear!

Oh! It's stopped!

After all that, it's stopped!

The jelly bear burned really brightly,

and it lasted longer than the banana,

so that tells us that the jelly bear definitely contains the most sugar.

We know sugar's bad for our teeth, don't we?

ALL: Yes!

-So no more jelly bears for me!

And we've got cat food and fish food.

From Mum's basket, we've found out

that we eat lots of different types of food.

But it's not just people that need food.

All living things need food, too.

But we still don't know why, so we should pay for this

Sorry we're late, we had to put petrol in the car.

That's OK, no worries at all. You see,

petrol is like food for your car. It's a fuel,

and you put fuel into something to give it energy to make it work.

I bought some sunflower seeds - mm, they're great as a healthy snack...

..and I also happen to have with me

a fan and a radio. So, let me see if the radio works.

Batteries have chemicals

that give out energy to make things work. Without batteries,

we need something else to make the radio work,

Food is our fuel. Without it, we wouldn't have any energy.

We found out most things need fuel to give them energy to work,

and humans need to eat, because food is OUR fuel.
