Super Ninja Skills Nine Minute Ninja

Time to get my ninja on.

And my clothes.

-Hi, Ricky.

-Whoa, who are you?

It's me, man. Keith Haring.

I was an American artist

and my earliest work was graffiti in subways.

Here's one of my famous pictures.

I became known for these bold figures and messages of love

and unity for all humanity.

Well, Keith, I'm going to unite your work

with something a little less human.

Right on, man.

So, I'm going to get myself some card and a pen from here.

And I'm going to draw the separate limbs and parts of an alien.

So, here's the head.

With three antennae.

Nice big, round body.

How many legs should we have?

Three legs?

Well, he is an alien.

There you go.

Now, I'll cut that out.

Remember to be careful when using scissors,

or get a sensible adult to help you.

I wonder if having three legs would make you better at football?

It probably wouldn't make you better at dancing.

I've kept my shapes quite boxy and bold

as this is of course inspired by Keith,

but you can do whatever you want with yours.

There we go.

And now I'm going to attach all the limbs using these split pins.

But first, I need to make some holes.

Use some modelling clay

and a pencil to push holes in all the alien's body parts.

And punching holes just makes it easier to get your split pins in.

So, slide them through.

And open them up on the back.

Repeat this until all the body parts are attached.

Because they are split pins

it means that you can move him round in lots of different, fun poses.

Right, I'm going to get some green paper and lay it down.

Then, I'm going to draw around him.

Because the card is raised slightly off the paper,

it's easier to draw around the alien.

Right, I'm going to cut him out.

I'm just cutting out the overall shape of him

and I'm going to go back and pick up these little recesses here.

Cool. Little green man looking good.

Now, I'm going to do another one on some blue paper.

Just going to make a new pose.

Maybe two legs down one leg up.

You might find it easier to Sticky Tack down your alien

when you draw around him to stop him from moving.

There we are.

Another alien figure.

Right, I could do with a couple more of these.

Maybe in some more colours.

So, I ninja myself some new ones.

I've got a lovely yellow one and a pink one too.

So, going to get myself a bit of backing paper...

..and start positioning them in a way that I like.

I kind of think that's a good look.

Then I'm going to glue stick them down.

All these cool poses we've made

really make the picture look like it's full of energy.

Having a party that's truly out of this world.

Once they're all stuck down,

draw around the aliens in black pen to make them stand out.

Right, so there we are. Look at these lot.

Nice and bright, black lines really making them pop out.

But they're missing that final Keith Haring touch.

And that's little lines here and there to accent the movement.

There we are.

Now, all it needs is a frame.

Isn't that great?

Little green men and women.

Well, and blue ones and pink ones and yellow ones.

Wow, Rick. Those people are out of this world.

Literally.

Here's a quick art tip.

How to add speech to your cartoon doodles.

So, the first stage is working out what your characters

are going to say and then leaving space,

so you can write it in afterwards.

So, I've drawn these guys here.

Little one of me getting my ninja on.

And I've left space at the top and down here where I want to put it.

Then when I come to actually write the text

I'm going to do it in capitals, so it's nice and bold and easy to read.

And over here, I'm going to write...

The next stage is to draw a circle round your text

and that just borders it off nicely.

And then a little tail to indicate who's speaking.

Now, on this one over here I'm shouting,

so I'm going to use a zigzag border to give it more energy.

And finally, you can enhance your drawings

by using text to create sound effects.

So, I'm going to put a nice big ka-pow up here.

In this one I'm using bubble writing.

There we go.

Here we go.

Got myself some Sellotape, some paper and card.

Coloured pens and scissors.

And of course a special straw.

What I'm going to do to begin with,

is I'm going to roll the paper round the end of the straw,

just to get a tube.

Here we go.

I'm going to sticky tape that together.

Here we are.

Now, I'm going to fold over the ends and then tape that down.

Put that to one side.

Now, I'm going to draw myself a superhero.

What superpowers would you have, Cory?

Super-strength.

Super-strength.

Nice one.

This is my superhero.

Why do superheroes always wear their pants over their trousers?

I think it's just the fashion.

Do the legs.

There we go.

And a cape.

And I'm going to put the little emblem in the middle.

I think he's going to be called Rad-Man.

Six-pack.

Red, blue and yellow are good hero colours, aren't they?

-Yep.

-Let's get colouring them in.

When I was younger, I had to put up with cheaper superheroes.

Such as Budget Boy.

His special power was getting money off things.

But don't worry, this superhero isn't going to be cheap,

he's going to be top of the range.

What colour should his bottoms be?

Erm... Blue.

Sounds good.

There we go.

What colour should his pants be?

Erm... Black, maybe.

Black. Yep. Black pants.

When you have a go, you can mix up the colours.

Shall we give him a yellow cape?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

Here. We can see him coming then.

Then I'm going to do the "Rad" bit here.

Make some yellow booties.

And I think I going to do his face pink,

cos I'd be pretty embarrassed if I had my pants on over my trousers.

OK, I'm going to cut that out.

And his legs.

And go round here on his hands, and his head.

There we go.

Now, I'm going to stick my little tube that I made to his back.

More sticky tape.

There we go.

Put the straw in.

All right.
