Time to get my ninja on. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
And my clothes. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:08
-Hi, Ricky. -Whoa, who are you? | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
It's me, man. Keith Haring. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
I was an American artist | 0:00:29 | 0:00:30
and my earliest work was graffiti in subways. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
Here's one of my famous pictures. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
I became known for these bold figures and messages of love | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
and unity for all humanity. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
Well, Keith, I'm going to unite your work | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
with something a little less human. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
Right on, man. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
So, I'm going to get myself some card and a pen from here. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
And I'm going to draw the separate limbs and parts of an alien. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
So, here's the head. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
With three antennae. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
Nice big, round body. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
How many legs should we have? | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
Three legs? | 0:01:06 | 0:01:07
Well, he is an alien. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:08
There you go. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
Now, I'll cut that out. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
Remember to be careful when using scissors, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
or get a sensible adult to help you. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
I wonder if having three legs would make you better at football? | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
It probably wouldn't make you better at dancing. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
I've kept my shapes quite boxy and bold | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
as this is of course inspired by Keith, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
but you can do whatever you want with yours. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:33
There we go. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:34
And now I'm going to attach all the limbs using these split pins. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
But first, I need to make some holes. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
Use some modelling clay | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
and a pencil to push holes in all the alien's body parts. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
And punching holes just makes it easier to get your split pins in. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
So, slide them through. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
And open them up on the back. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
Repeat this until all the body parts are attached. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
Because they are split pins | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
it means that you can move him round in lots of different, fun poses. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:08
Right, I'm going to get some green paper and lay it down. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
Then, I'm going to draw around him. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
Because the card is raised slightly off the paper, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
it's easier to draw around the alien. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
Right, I'm going to cut him out. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
I'm just cutting out the overall shape of him | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
and I'm going to go back and pick up these little recesses here. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
Cool. Little green man looking good. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
Now, I'm going to do another one on some blue paper. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
Just going to make a new pose. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:42
Maybe two legs down one leg up. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
You might find it easier to Sticky Tack down your alien | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
when you draw around him to stop him from moving. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
There we are. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
Another alien figure. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:58
Right, I could do with a couple more of these. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
Maybe in some more colours. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
So, I ninja myself some new ones. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
I've got a lovely yellow one and a pink one too. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
So, going to get myself a bit of backing paper... | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
..and start positioning them in a way that I like. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
I kind of think that's a good look. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
Then I'm going to glue stick them down. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
All these cool poses we've made | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
really make the picture look like it's full of energy. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
Having a party that's truly out of this world. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
Once they're all stuck down, | 0:03:29 | 0:03:30
draw around the aliens in black pen to make them stand out. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
Right, so there we are. Look at these lot. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
Nice and bright, black lines really making them pop out. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
But they're missing that final Keith Haring touch. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
And that's little lines here and there to accent the movement. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:48
There we are. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:53
Now, all it needs is a frame. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
Isn't that great? | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
Little green men and women. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
Well, and blue ones and pink ones and yellow ones. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
Wow, Rick. Those people are out of this world. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
Literally. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:06
Here's a quick art tip. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:11
How to add speech to your cartoon doodles. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
So, the first stage is working out what your characters | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
are going to say and then leaving space, | 0:04:16 | 0:04:17
so you can write it in afterwards. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
So, I've drawn these guys here. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
Little one of me getting my ninja on. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:22
And I've left space at the top and down here where I want to put it. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
Then when I come to actually write the text | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
I'm going to do it in capitals, so it's nice and bold and easy to read. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:31
And over here, I'm going to write... | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
The next stage is to draw a circle round your text | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
and that just borders it off nicely. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
And then a little tail to indicate who's speaking. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:45
Now, on this one over here I'm shouting, | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
so I'm going to use a zigzag border to give it more energy. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
And finally, you can enhance your drawings | 0:04:54 | 0:04:56
by using text to create sound effects. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
So, I'm going to put a nice big ka-pow up here. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
In this one I'm using bubble writing. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
There we go. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:06
It's a quick art tip. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:09
Ricky, what can you do with these? | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
What's your name, buddy? | 0:05:24 | 0:05:25
-I'm Cory. -Hi, Cory. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:27
Where are you from? | 0:05:27 | 0:05:28
I'm from Cardiff. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:29
Cardiff, yeah. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:31
So, what have you got for me today? | 0:05:31 | 0:05:32
Can you make some art with straws? | 0:05:32 | 0:05:34
Make something with straws? I can do better than that. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:36
I can make you a cartoon superhero. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
I'll just get my bits. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
Here we go. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:41
Got myself some Sellotape, some paper and card. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
Coloured pens and scissors. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
And of course a special straw. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
What I'm going to do to begin with, | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
is I'm going to roll the paper round the end of the straw, | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
just to get a tube. | 0:05:55 | 0:05:56
Here we go. | 0:05:57 | 0:05:58
I'm going to sticky tape that together. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:04
Here we are. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:05
Now, I'm going to fold over the ends and then tape that down. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
Put that to one side. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:16
Now, I'm going to draw myself a superhero. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
What superpowers would you have, Cory? | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
Super-strength. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:22
Super-strength. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:23
Nice one. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
Good choice. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:26
This is my superhero. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
I'd love to see your design for Super Strongman. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
Why do superheroes always wear their pants over their trousers? | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
I think it's just the fashion. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
Do the legs. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:39
There we go. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
And a cape. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:42
And I'm going to put the little emblem in the middle. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:45
I think he's going to be called Rad-Man. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
Six-pack. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
Red, blue and yellow are good hero colours, aren't they? | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
-Yep. -Let's get colouring them in. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
When I was younger, I had to put up with cheaper superheroes. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
Such as Budget Boy. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
His special power was getting money off things. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
But don't worry, this superhero isn't going to be cheap, | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
he's going to be top of the range. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
What colour should his bottoms be? | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
Erm... Blue. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:20
Sounds good. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
There we go. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
What colour should his pants be? | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
Erm... Black, maybe. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
Black. Yep. Black pants. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:36
When you have a go, you can mix up the colours. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
Shall we give him a yellow cape? | 0:07:41 | 0:07:43
-Yeah. -Yeah. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:44
Here. We can see him coming then. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:45
Then I'm going to do the "Rad" bit here. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:50
Make some yellow booties. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:54
And I think I going to do his face pink, | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
cos I'd be pretty embarrassed if I had my pants on over my trousers. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
OK, I'm going to cut that out. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:06
And his legs. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
And go round here on his hands, and his head. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
There we go. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:16
Now, I'm going to stick my little tube that I made to his back. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:20
More sticky tape. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:21
There we go. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
Put the straw in. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:29
All right. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:30
Do you want to see him? | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
Yep. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34 | |
What do you think? | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
That's awesome. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:37
He looks good, doesn't he? | 0:08:37 | 0:08:39
And then check this out. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:40
Ah, brilliant. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:50
What do you think of it? | 0:08:50 | 0:08:51
It's super! | 0:08:51 | 0:08:52
I'll give it 110%. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
110%?! | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
That's not even possible! | 0:08:57 | 0:08:58
Now, go to the website and get your ninja on. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
Art Ninja! | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08 |
