Flying Ninja Skills Nine Minute Ninja

Time to get my Ninja on.

And my clothes.

Here's a quick art tip of how to draw a flock of birds.

So we're going to start with the big bird at the front.

Its tail feathers.

Nice big beak.

And I'm going to do its wing, back, mid-flap.

And its feet back too.

Next, we are going to draw another bird, top left.

This one is going to be smaller as it's going to be in the distance

and I'm going to draw this one's wing, down, at the end of its flap.

Drawing the wings in different places

gives your flock a greater sense of movement.

And now finally, I'm going to draw

one more bird between the two of them, so medium size.

And this one's wings are going to be at the top of its body.

You can draw as many birds as you want.

Another one here.

And then I'm going to add a couple of action lines

just to make them look like they are drifting through the sky.

There we go, a quick art tip.

Hey, you there!

Seriously need a wash?

Well now, you can make bath time party time

with new bath-time ice cream.

Here's how you make it.

You need a bowl

and a spoon.

Put some baking powder in the bowl.

Add some citric acid - available from supermarkets or chemists -

to make it fizz.

Pour in some cornflour

and add some almond oil.

Mmm, nutty.

Drip that in.

Additionally, you will need food colouring.

I'm using grey

but you can use any colour you like.

Essential oil is...essential.

Smells good. Just a splash.

Now stir it all up until it is all mixed together.

Like this.

Using your hands, mould the mixture into a ball shape

until it looks like an ice cream scoop.

You can repeat to make different-coloured scoops.

Look at that!

Very cool.

Bath-time ice cream.

It looks nice enough to eat.

But don't, all right?

Who needs fancy-pants kit to animate?

Not me, I just need ninja fingers.

To make this nifty flip-book animation, all you are going to need

is some sticky memo notes,

a pen

and your imagination.

And you can make this animation in just three ninja moves.

Ninja move number one.

Take the last page of your sticky memo book,

that's where you're going to draw your first frame.

Now I'm going to be doing a motorcyclist jumping over

some of these rad little cars, so let's start drawing my motorcyclist.

Draw as its first frame, put a little helmet on this person here.

Safety first.

Then flick to the next page

and trace some aspects of your motorcyclist through.

But what I'm going to do is, I'm going to trace it slightly higher

so it looks like the engine's running

and they're bobbing up and down as the engine ticks over.

Just flick back between them like that.

And you can see that is starting to animate.

Ninja move number two.

You've got to continue to draw all your frames

through your sticky memo book all the way to the top.

Now this bit takes quite a bit of time so let's time-lapse.

In case you wondering, that's my mate, Rich, who helped me film this.

Right, once you've drawn all your frames, all you have to do,

flip the book from back to front to make the animation work.

You can see the little motorcyclists riding along.

I've even done a little bit of fumes coming out the back

to show the engine's running and a couple of skids.

Vroom! And something special for the stunt.

Ninja move number three.

Create the assault course for your motorcyclist.

So what I'm going to do is I'm going to have a little ramp over here.

Let's put some little cars in to jump

and then I'm going to have a little area for them to land on.

OK, let's test our bike.

If we flick the flip book and move it along the table at the same

time, it creates the illusion that the bike is actually driving along.

Yeah, it works. Now we are ready for the death-defying stunt.

Ninja fingers away.

-So, what is your name then?

-I'm Marco and I'm from Glasgow.

So, Marco, what have you got for me today?

-What can you make with an eraser?

-An eraser?

Well, normally with an eraser, we rub out pictures

but I think I can create one, I'll just go and grab my stuff.

Right, so I'm going to be drawing a picture with an eraser.

So I need something to rub out first, don't I?

So I'm going to do a wash across my entire page with some charcoal.

Get the whole thing nice and dark.

And I think I'm going to do an astronaut picture,

Cos what's nice and dark?

Space.

-So, Marco, do you believe in aliens and things?

-Yeah.

-What do you reckon they would look like?

-I think they would be green.

-They'd be green?

-Yes.

Yeah, it would be rude if they weren't green, wouldn't it, really?

Right, so, I've managed to make my paper nice and dark.

My hands are dirty.

Now I'm going to start drawing my picture by rubbing out the charcoal.

So we are going to start with the curvature of the Earth.

The sun just bouncing off it there.

I think I will leave some areas dark cos that could be like landmass.

And I'm going to rub out where the ocean should be,

because then it is like the sun is reflecting off the oceans.

-So, Marco, do you like space?

-I like the planet Mars.

You like the planet Mars, why is that?

-Because it starts with my name.

-Oh, good choice.

OK, so that is the earth there. Then we're going to do the moon.

When you have a go, you can make a picture of whatever you like.

The sky is the limit.

The sun bouncing off one side of it.

Do you know what, space needs the astronaut, doesn't it?

An astronaut is going to be floating around doing a spacewalk.

So, I'll start drawing an astronaut in here.

Just draw one arm. Yeah.

That's his oxygen pipe there going round. I'll start doing his legs.

If he's going to spacewalk or moonwalk, we need to have legs.

It is quite nice drawing in reverse.

And of course, let's just pop in a couple of stars.

-More than a couple of stars.

-OK, like a million stars.

Yeah, that'd be better.

I'm just going to use the charcoal to put a couple of darker areas in.

Let's put some creases into his space suit. Elbow.

-OK, Marco, you are ready to see it?

-Yes.

-Prepare for blast off.

Whoa!

-What do you think, do you like it?

-Yes, I do.

So what would you score it out of ten?

Hopefully, not an astro-NOUGHT.

Ten out of ten? Oh, yeah, that's an awesome score.

I think all the picture needs now is a lovely border to finish it off.
