-Oh, hey, Gavin. What have you got?

-Oh, your magazine, Chicken Weekly.

0:00:260:00:29

It must've been delivered to me by mistake.

0:00:290:00:32

You've not got my magazine at all, have you?

0:00:320:00:34

No, unfortunately,

0:00:340:00:35

Annoying Best Mates Monthly hasn't been delivered yet.

0:00:350:00:38

-Ha-ha, good one. Cheers, Rick. See you later.

-See you later.

Art Ninja.

0:00:420:00:44

Gavin's full of hot air, so let's make this awesome cel animation.

0:00:440:00:49

What I'm going to use is just a sheet of cardboard,

0:00:490:00:52

and I'm going to draw a border around it,

0:00:520:00:56

which is about the width of a ruler.

0:00:560:00:58

Right, I'm going to cut out the middle bit,

0:01:020:01:04

so I'm left with a frame.

0:01:040:01:05

Be careful with scissors. They can be sharp.

0:01:050:01:09

Now, you're going to need two of these,

0:01:090:01:11

-so I've just ninja'd myself another one.

-Ya!

0:01:110:01:14

Now, grab yourself some clingfilm and a glue-stick,

0:01:140:01:17

and give the frame a generous portion of glue.

0:01:170:01:20

Looks like enough.

0:01:240:01:26

OK, now the tricky bit.

0:01:260:01:28

Roll it out over your frame.

0:01:280:01:30

OK. Now, cos we used loads of glue,

0:01:330:01:36

it means we can stretch it out across this frame

0:01:360:01:40

without it suddenly sticking completely.

0:01:400:01:44

Look at that. Nice and taut.

0:01:440:01:45

Now, we want to put another good portion of glue

0:01:470:01:49

on the other side of the frame.

0:01:490:01:51

SWOOSH

0:01:510:01:54

Now, sandwich the clingfilm between film between the two frames,

0:01:540:01:58

like that.

0:01:580:01:59

Just stretch it around like this,

0:01:590:02:01

just to make sure it's nice and tight.

0:02:010:02:03

And there we are, your first frame...

0:02:030:02:06

ready for drawing on.

0:02:060:02:07

Now, this isn't a canvas, this is a cel.

0:02:070:02:10

It's what animators used to draw on.

0:02:100:02:11

Now, rather than drawing straight onto it,

0:02:110:02:13

I've drawn a little image, first, as a guide,

0:02:130:02:16

so that I don't muck it up and have to make my cel again.

0:02:160:02:19

Now, I'm just going to trace the guide on to the cel.

0:02:200:02:23

'I'm using a permanent marker to do this.'

0:02:230:02:26

A lot of seagulls in Bristol.

0:02:310:02:34

Great. Now I can paint it.

0:02:340:02:36

I'm putting yellow paper under the cel so that when I paint it,

0:02:360:02:39

I can see it more easily.

0:02:390:02:41

There we are.

0:02:410:02:43

SQUELCH

0:02:430:02:45

What I'm using here is acrylic paint,

0:02:450:02:48

which is pretty happy to put on anything.

0:02:480:02:50

SWOOSH

0:02:500:02:54

The great thing about this,

0:02:540:02:56

using cel, is that you could layer up a picture

0:02:560:02:58

and create a foreground and a background,

0:02:580:03:00

and if you were animating,

0:03:000:03:02

it meant you didn't have to redraw everything over and over again,

0:03:020:03:05

so what I've done here is drawn a lovely foreground.

0:03:050:03:10

So, this is a box made up of two of the frames -

0:03:100:03:12

one at the front and one at the back - and I wrapped

0:03:120:03:15

a piece of cardboard around three of the sides, but left one of them open

0:03:150:03:19

because that's where we're going to slide in our other cels.

0:03:190:03:23

And if we just slide my frame inside...

0:03:230:03:28

Look at that.

0:03:280:03:29

So, hot-air balloon, over the lovely rolling hills,

0:03:290:03:32

but it feels like it's in a bit of a void. It needs some background.

0:03:320:03:36

And I've painted some white clouds on a blue piece of paper,

0:03:360:03:40

and I've put sticky tacks on the corner,

0:03:400:03:43

and so when I stick it to the back,

0:03:430:03:45

if I ever want to change the weather, I can.

0:03:450:03:49

And there we are. Look how beautiful that is. Gives it real depth.

0:03:490:03:53

Now, this piece of art has a trick up its sleeve.

0:03:530:03:56

So, I've drawn some other frames.

0:03:560:03:58

We can see here how they work, sort of, one after the other,

0:03:580:04:01

so I'm just going to grab my tablet.

0:04:010:04:04

I've got on it some animation software.

0:04:040:04:07

Right, so my first frame is in place.

0:04:070:04:09

I'll just go for a frame.

0:04:090:04:11

-CAMERA CLICKS

-Nice.

0:04:110:04:13

Swap out my frame to the next one.

0:04:130:04:15

CAMERA CLICKS

0:04:160:04:19

So, on each of these frames, the bird,

0:04:190:04:22

he's moved just a tiny amount towards the balloon.

0:04:220:04:27

Oh, now he's bumped into it.

0:04:270:04:29

CAMERA CLICKS

0:04:290:04:31

Cool. Let's have a little look at it.

0:04:310:04:34

The air balloon cel picture - why don't you try it yourself?

0:04:350:04:40

SQUELCH

0:04:400:04:42

BOING

0:04:420:04:44

Oh, erm...

0:04:440:04:46

I'm a clay ninja,

0:04:460:04:47

and that's because I know this awesome technique that will

0:04:470:04:50

put bounce into any animation, and it's called -

0:04:500:04:53

dun-duh-duh-dun -

0:04:530:04:55

squash and stretch.

0:04:550:04:56

Here's how to work it in three ninja moves.

0:04:560:05:00

Ninja move number one...

0:05:000:05:02

It's time to do the squash.

0:05:020:05:04

Now, I'm going to be doing this with some clay and some wire.

0:05:040:05:09

-So, I just put the ball up here.

-CAMERA CLICKS

0:05:090:05:12

And then, make it go down towards the table.

0:05:120:05:14

'For each photo, paint out the wire

0:05:140:05:16

'using free online photo-manipulation software.'

0:05:160:05:19

And then, when it gets close to the table,

0:05:190:05:21

when it actually touches it, it needs to squash out to

0:05:210:05:24

absorb the impact, so it gets really squashed like that.

0:05:240:05:27

And the first movement should be a really big jump,

0:05:270:05:30

so it should go from round to quite squashed,

0:05:300:05:32

because it feels more impactful, like it had more velocity.

0:05:320:05:36

-There we go.

-CAMERA CLICKS

0:05:360:05:38

This is obviously the first part of squash and stretch -

0:05:380:05:41

so the squash. And then, squash it a little bit more.

0:05:410:05:44

-CAMERA CLICKS

-And each time you squash it in this

0:05:440:05:47

part of the animation, squash it a little bit less each time.

0:05:470:05:49

So, the first one is a big impact, and then a little bit more,

0:05:490:05:52

a little bit more. So it's kind of easing into it.

0:05:520:05:54

Ninja move number two...

0:05:540:05:56

Now we need to do the stretch part.

0:05:560:05:58

First of all, the ball needs to return to normal ball shape,

0:05:580:06:00

so just roll it into a ball.

0:06:000:06:02

Here we go.

0:06:060:06:08

-CAMERA CLICKS

-And then it starts to go long,

0:06:080:06:10

like a sausage,

0:06:100:06:12

and that's because we are trying to give the idea that it's

0:06:120:06:14

bouncing back away from the impact it just had.

0:06:140:06:17

-CAMERA CLICKS

-Bit more of a sausage.

0:06:170:06:19

And this first bounce has been quite aggressive.

0:06:190:06:22

It's a big squash and a big stretch,

0:06:220:06:24

because it's fallen from the highest point.

0:06:240:06:26

-There we go.

-CAMERA CLICKS

0:06:260:06:28

And as it raises up,

0:06:280:06:30

it slowly starts to form back into its normal ball shape,

0:06:300:06:33

so less of a stretch now.

0:06:330:06:35

-There we go.

-CAMERA CLICKS

0:06:350:06:37

And then, when it gets to the highest point,

0:06:370:06:39

back perfectly into a ball.

0:06:390:06:41

CAMERA CLICKS

0:06:430:06:45

Ninja move number three...

0:06:450:06:47

So, now we need to use our squash and stretch skills to move the ball.

0:06:470:06:51

If we're going to have a ball bounce

0:06:510:06:52

and then slowly come to a stop,

0:06:520:06:54

we need to decrease the amount of squash and stretch on each bounce.

0:06:540:06:57

This makes the whole thing look more real.

0:06:570:07:00

Let's take a look at the ball in action.

0:07:000:07:02

BOING

0:07:020:07:05

Hey, you, there.

0:07:060:07:08

Odd socks suck but they don't have to any more,

0:07:080:07:11

because you can turn them into the Sock Ninja.

0:07:110:07:15

'Here's how you make it.' Ugh.

0:07:170:07:20

'Stuff cotton wool in an old sock, and use hairbands or elastic bands

0:07:200:07:26

'to keep it in a mega-head for your Sock Ninja.

0:07:260:07:30

'Cut at the heel of your sock. Keep that. You'll need it later.

0:07:310:07:36

'Make some slices for the body and the arms,

0:07:370:07:40

'and use a needle and thread to sew them,

0:07:400:07:43

'stuffing with cotton wool as you go.

0:07:430:07:46

'Secure the hands with bands.

0:07:480:07:51

'Hello, there.

0:07:530:07:54

'Cut, sew, and stuff the other half of the sock to make legs,

0:07:540:07:58

'and then sew them on.

0:07:580:08:01

'Very springy.

0:08:010:08:03

'Using felt, cut out shapes to add detail,

0:08:050:08:08

'and use glue to attach them to your ninja.

0:08:080:08:11

'Stick on eyes,

0:08:130:08:16

'headband,

0:08:160:08:19

'ears,

0:08:190:08:21

'mouth and sash...

0:08:210:08:24

'to complete the full ninja effect.'

0:08:240:08:27

The Sock Ninja makes a great toy.

0:08:280:08:32

Now you no longer have to throw your odd socks -

0:08:320:08:36

unless you're using them as a ball, of course.

0:08:360:08:40

Ha-ha! That looks fun. Where can I get one?

0:08:400:08:43

WHOOSH AND THUD

0:08:430:08:45

Those 3-D tellies are good, these days.

0:08:450:08:47
