Heroic Ninja Skills Nine Minute Ninja

It's a new day.

I'd better get my ninja on.

And my clothes!

Other than being an art ninja, I've always wanted to be a superhero,

so I thought I'd try making one.

-BOTH:

-Ricky, Ricky, Ricky!

It's the ninja apprentices!

Ricky, can you make art with a fan?

I'll make art with anybody, they don't have to be a fan.

-BOTH:

-Oh!

Hi, Ricky!

Hey, it's Isabel Clifton from Hetty Feather.

I was thinking, what could Ricky make out of this bunch of keys?

Not much, I'm afraid.

Hey, what have these guys got?

Ricky, can you make art out of a soap bottle?

All right, I choose you.

-BOTH:

-Yay!

-So, what are your names?

-I'm Rahisa.

-And I'm Aniya.

So, where are you from?

-BOTH:

-Manchester.

Well, it's a great suggestion. I'll just go and grab my things.

So I've got some paints there.

A milk bottle.

Kitchen roll.

Some modelling clay.

Some special bits I'll come to later and, of course,

a trusty soap bottle.

Now, I'm going to turn this into a superhero. Or should I say...

A soap-erhero?

Right, take this bit off. Won't be needing that.

Now, what I'm going to do is I'm going to carefully

cut into the milk bottle.

Now, you might need some help at home because it's quite tricky,

and you need to be safe with scissors because I need this handle.

Don't need this bit.

I'm cutting right at the bottom of the handle on one end...

then leaving two bigger pieces of plastic on the other.

Here we go, just tidy this bit up.

This is going to be an arm for my soap bottle.

I'm going to need two of these, so I just ninja another.

-BOTH:

-Wow!

OK, I'm going to hold them to the

side of my bottle with some masking tape.

So, do you guys like to do art?

I like to draw cats. I'm quite good at drawing cats.

So did you by any chance design Aniya's T-shirt?

THEY GIGGLE

-No.

-No?

Right, now I'm going to stick a pencil

to the back of my soap bottle.

I'm just going to cover it in masking tape.

It kind of works like a quick papier mache.

It means that my paint will take to it better.

Going to make myself a stand now by cutting off 3cm

of my kitchen roll tube.

There we go.

And then, using some modelling clay, I'm going to take a little

pinch of it off because I'm going to use that for the hands.

And the rest, I'm going to stuff inside this little short cylinder.

I'm just adding these little bits of clay to the ends of the arms,

just to smooth them off.

Now I'm going to stick the pencil into the stand.

Perfect.

So, I know it doesn't look like much yet.

How can I make it look more like a superhero?

Add some bright colours, like red, yellow.

I'm going to take that as a cue to mix the two together

because I've got some orange paint here.

And I've mixed my paint with a bit of PVA glue,

just to thicken it up, so it sticks nicely to the bottle.

So my friend Sarah's managed to make herself invisible.

If you were invisible, what would you do?

Sneak up on people and...

scare them.

I love making people jump. Awesome.

So what I'm doing here is I'm blending the lighter colour orange

into the darker colour orange round the edges.

That's just to give it a nicer finish.

OK, now I'm going to move on to do the arms.

I want some good colour contrast, so I'm going to do those black.

Right, I'm going to paint the stand.

I'm just painting the base now.

By the way, if you are painting at home, like this,

I'd suggest putting some newspaper down to protect the top.

OK guys, I would have to wait for that to dry or you guys could

give me a hand with some ninja skills.

Oh, yeah, great ninja skills. Perfectly dry!

Now I'm going to add the lid for my head

and a couple of finishing touches that really turns

it into a superhero.

For that I've got a cape, which I've just cut out of some coloured paper.

I'm attaching it with a couple of pieces of double-sided sticky tape.

Got a special little utility belt,

where this hero keeps all of his gadgets

and also stops his trousers from falling down.

And finally, the chest emblem.

Mine's an R for Radman.

It's amazing.

-Yes.

This superhero also has the ability

to look after your jewellery.

Pretty sweet.

So it's a special little jewellery tidy.

It's a ten. We wrote it with invisible ink.

Dad always said he wished his superpower was to fly,

so I made it happen.

Gavin's left his spy box of tricks behind.

I wonder what else is inside.

Ejector seat spray. I'll give it a go.

Hmm, doesn't work.

Hi, Ricky. I'll just take a seat.

Sometimes it's like this picture follows me around the room.

That's because it's animated.

That was when we did the art with vacuum cleaners.

-That didn't suck.

-Nah.

That's when me and Gavin wore the same thing.

What's this?

Oh, that's the one from the future, where we transformed into robots.

What?!

-Don't worry, mate, it's just an animation.

Oh, and it had loads of this...

No, no, it's more like this...

So, to make this cool robot animation, you'll need...

A photo of your friends,

some paint, or some correction fluid,

some pens, a tablet or smartphone with animation app.

And you can put it together in just three ninja moves.

Ninja move number one.

You need to take a picture of you and your friend,

so I'm going to set it to timer.

Strike a robo-pose!

Sweet. Now we need to print it out.

Ninja move number two.

One of the good things to do is to stick down your picture

because you don't want it to move.

Now I can start animating.

I want the separate robot parts to come in one after the other

because if they all come in at once, you don't get much of a cool effect.

But if they come in gradually, it looks way more epic.

I'm using correction fluid, just because it dries quicker.

It means I can draw on it straight away.

Start by taking the first frame.

Right, I think I'm going to start with mine and Richard's waist.

And have the pieces sort of slide round, like that.

Now, with just a normal rollerball,

I'll start putting in a bit of detail.

You can sharp up the lines

because it kind of scratches away where it's a little bit loose.

Doesn't matter if it's rough because it's going to happen SO quick.

Right, take my second frame.

And now we can just paint over the top of that again with

the correction fluid.

I'm just repeating this over and over again

until we're all armoured up.

Take a frame every time you add more detail.

Let your imagination go wild

with whatever outfits you want to wear.

Ninja move number three.

I've shot all my frames on my tablet device,

but now to add something extra cool and do some sound effects.

Just try and find some interesting stuff from around the house

that you can record to make cool sound effects.

So I've got all my frames shot,

I've added some really cool sound effects that I recorded myself.

I think it's time to take a look at our mini masterpiece.
