-What's In The Egg?

-One sunny morning, Mrs Mwnci awoke

-from her favourite dream.

-The one where it rains bananas!

-She looked out

-at the jungle she loved so much.

-She knew every animal,

-insect and bird...

-..and she was even friends

-with some of the plants.

-The view was amazing!

-If you've never woken up

-in Mrs Mwnci's tree...

-..you're missing out!

-You can see waterfalls, tall trees,

-bright flowers and an egg.

-Just a minute! An egg?

-Mrs Mwnci saw something she'd never

-seen before - a huge egg!

-The strange egg

-was red, blue and orange.

-"Well! This is really strange,"

-thought Mrs Mwnci.

-"I wonder whom or what...

-..could have left such a strange egg

-all alone, in the jungle."

-"I wonder what's inside it."

-She grabbed a vine...

-..and she swung down

-to the forest floor to investigate.

-By the time she reached the glade

-where the egg sat...

-..a crowd had started to gather.

-There was an elephant there

-and a snake too.

-A hippo was walking slowly

-towards the egg.

-Some birds had been

-in the trees for a while...

-..partly because they were nosey...

-..and partly because they

-didn't like the look of the lion...

-..who was staring at them.

-Nobody knew what was in the egg.

-The elephant spoke first.

-"I have an idea!"

-she said confidently.

-"That's a big egg,

-and I'd say it's elephant-sized."

-"It's colourful too,

-so it must be an eleparrot."

-"An eleparrot? What on earth

-is an eleparrot?" asked Mrs Mwnci.

-"It's half elephant, half parrot,"

-explained the elephant.

-"It's almost as big as an elephant

-but it's covered in feathers...

-..and it has the wings and tail

-of a parrot."

-"It has claws too,

-so it can sit in trees."

-"It really is a beautiful creature."

-"What s-s-sort of tree would it

-s-s-sit in?" hissed the snake.

-"Quite a big tree,"

-replied the elephant.

-"It eats monkey nuts and bananas."

-"When it flies through the jungle,

-it trumpets loudly and clearly."

-"It can fly above the clouds

-with its huge wings."

-"That's not an eleparrot egg,"

-said the hippo...

-..who'd finally arrived in the glade

-and was slightly out of breath.

-"It's got to be a hippameleon."

-"Right!" said Mrs Mwnci.

-"Please tell us

-what a hippameleon is, hippo!"

-"The hippameleon is half hippo,

-half chameleon," replied the hippo.

-"It has the head and body

-of a hippo...

-..but it can change colour,

-like a chameleon."

-"I've never seen one of those,"

-said a ruddy-cheeked cockatiel.

-"That's because they're so good at

-changing colour to hide themselves."

-"They pick fruit from trees

-with their long, sticky tongues.

-"They love mud.

-Every amazing creature loves mud!"

-"That's true," said the elephant.

-"There isn't a hippameleon

-inside that egg," said the giraffe.

-"I know what's in it."

-"Do you really?" said Mrs Mwnci,

-rolling her eyes.

-"Yes! Anyone with an ounce of common

-sense knows what's in the egg."

-"It's a girark," said the giraffe.

-"What?" said the others.

-"The girark has a giraffe's body and

-a shark's head," said the giraffe.

-"There's a huge fin on its back

-and it eats whatever it wants!"

-"Hippameleons and eleparrots

-are its favourites."

-"Is there really such a thing

-as a girark?" asked the hippo.

-He was worried

-because he wasn't quick on his feet.

-"Yes-s-s," said the snake.

-"I've seen hundreds of them."

-"They only come out

-when it's raining...

-..and they can run like the wind."

-"Wow!" said the other animals,

-as they stared at the egg.

-"It's definitely an eleparrot!"

-said the elephant.

-"No! It's a hippameleon,"

-said the hippo.

-"It's obviously a girark,"

-sighed the giraffe.

-The animals started to bicker

-about what was in the egg.

-Some of them sided with the hippo

-and some sided with the elephant...

-..but very few animals

-sided with the giraffe.

-I don't blame them either.

-The idea of a giraffe with

-a shark's head is a bit frightening!

-"Excuse me," said Mrs Mwnci.

-"I think I know what's in the egg."

-"Having listened to everyone's ideas

-and having examined the egg...

-..I think I have the answer

-to this big question."

-"Then tell us what it is,"

-said the lion.

-"You've lived here

-longer than most of us."

-"If anyone knows,

-that's going to be you."

-"Well, I'm not certain

-but I think it's a gorritterfly."

-"Hmm! I wasn't expecting that,"

-said the lion.

-"What is a goritterfly?"

-"Please tell us!"

-"A gorritterfly

-looks like a gorilla...

-..but it has beautiful,

-butterfly wings," said Mrs Mwnci.

-"The gorritterfly flies around

-collecting nectar from flowers...

-..and eating bananas."

-"It makes its nest

-high in the trees."

-"It starts its life

-as a catermonkey...

-..then it emerges from a cocoon

-as a beautiful gorritterfly."

-The animals fell silent.

-Then, the hyenas started to laugh.

-The elephant joined in

-and so did the giraffe...

-..until the jungle

-was full of laughter.

-"Oh, you're laughing at me,

-are you?"

-"You believe in flying elephants

-and invisible hippos...

-..but not in gorillas with

-butterfly wings?" said Mrs Mwnci.

-"That's right, Mrs Mwnci,"

-said the lion.

-The lion was the king of the jungle

-and he was wise and kind.

-"We're all sorry for laughing,"

-roared the lion.

-Everyone listened to him.

-"Whatever is in this egg,

-we'll soon find out."

-"One thing's for certain, if we wait

-long enough, the shell will split...

-..and whatever's inside

-will come out."

-"We'll then finally find out

-what's inside the egg."

-"We must be patient,

-my jungle friends."

-And so, they waited patiently.

-Day turned to night

-and night turned to day...

-..and still,

-the animals sat around the egg.

-And then, finally, the egg

-started to move one afternoon.

-It shook, then it wobbled...

-..and eventually - crack!

-"Eleparrot!" said the elephant.

-"Hippameleon!" said the hippo.

-"Girark!" shouted the giraffe.

-Mrs Mwnci and her friends

-were very excited...

-..and they watched

-as the split became wider and wider.

-They all came closer

-and they peeped inside.

-What did they see?

-Well, what do you think

-was inside the egg?
