-A long, long, time ago...
-..according to some,
-there was a small country.
-Jimi Joblot lived there
-in a wooden and clay house.
-Jimi Joblot had nothing to do.
-When there's nothing to do,
-there's nothing to do.
-It must be said, wasting a whole day
-was silly, in Jimi's eyes.
-He thought, "Let's fill
-this empty day to the edges.
-"I could swim an ocean," he said...
-he couldn't swim.
-"Or fly in an aeroplane,"
-he shouted loudly...
-.."But I'd better not - aeroplanes
-haven't been invented yet!
-"I know," he said, "I'll fetch
-my tools and build a staircase.
-"I'll make it from the finest oak
-with plenty of steps...
-"..and a hand rail here
-and another there...
-"..getting longer and longer."
-He went into the forest
-and placed his tools on the ground.
-He measured all the wood
-using his large and small pencils.
-He smiled a wide smile
-across his face.
-Jimi Joblot was about to start
-building his staircase.
-He started the work
-with his sharpest tools.
-He used his plane, nails and hammer
-and whistled a happy song.
-One by one, with the greatest care,
-he built up, step by step...
-..until he'd built a steep
-staircase, much to his surprise.
-But somehow, the staircase
-wasn't enough for old Jimi.
-He wanted to go higher and collected
-more wood before continuing.
-This was now the focus
-of Jimi Joblot's life.
-As he turned every screw,
-what would I do without you?"
-Higher and higher he went -
-Jimi was so proud of his staircase.
-The staircase touched a cloud
-in the sky - incredible!
-The farmer walked by
-and shouted up the staircase.
-"Hello, Mr Joblot.
-Can I call you Jimi?"
-"Of course you can," replied Jim
-as he shouted down from the sky.
-The farmer pondered
-where the staircase would end.
-He left his cow and horse
-and started to climb the staircase.
-He said, "What's up there?
-It won't hurt to find out."
-He followed Jimi
-to see what he could find...
-..but back below,
-at the foot of the staircase...
-..the baker walked by.
-"How strange," he said,
-eating a tasty bun.
-"A staircase in the middle
-of the forest? This is exciting.
-"Now then, where does it go?
-I must investigate."
-He looked up high into the sky
-and started to climb the staircase.
-Gwenno the ballerina
-pirouetted into sight.
-the never-ending staircase.
-On the tips of her toes, she peered
-and saw the farmer and the baker.
-She said, "Can I join you
-on your journey up the mountain?"
-"Of course, Gwen," they replied.
-Off they went, higher and higher.
-But at the bottom of the staircase,
-the butcher appeared.
-What was going on up this staircase,
-He threw his sausages on his back
-and started to climb.
-As he climbed
-he wondered why he was climbing.
-The butcher climbed
-with his sausages...
-"What's going on up there?
-"How high does this go?"
-"We have no idea," said the farmer,
-the baker and Gwenno.
-Mr Butcher followed the other three
-The policeman saw the staircase
-and said, "Hello, hello, hello.
-"What's this? A staircase?
-"I must look into this.
-I must start climbing."
-The staircase was starting
-to fill up...
-..but there was still room for more.
-A brass band joined in
-with their instruments.
-They played their melodies,
-every verse and chorus.
-The melodic climbers
-asked the same question.
-"What's up there?
-Where will the staircase end?
-"We have no idea
-but we will follow you up."
-A rugby team joined,
-along with a bus of schoolchildren.
-A fire engine, a doctor and
-a little dog called Pero Deiniol.
-A fisherman, a binman and a teacher.
-A gardener from Llangrannog.
-A green lorry load of soldiers...
-..a plumber and a minister.
-Six nurses, five drummers
-and 15 dancing bears.
-They all climbed Jimi's staircase
-to find out where it went.
-They climbed through the clouds...
-..as the staircase continued
-higher and higher.
-Finally, they saw Jimi
-with a hammer in his hand.
-He was sawing and using the plane
-as he whistled happily.
-When he saw the following crowd,
-.."Oh, goodness me,
-please allow me to ask...
-"..what are you all doing here?"
-Everyone asked the same question
-"Where does this staircase go, Jim?"
-they asked in unison.
-Jim said, "I don't have
-an easy answer for you.
-"Since you're all so well-mannered,
-I'll tell you.
-"It's obvious to a genius
-and a clown.
-"Here is my answer.
-"This staircase, my friends,
-goes all the way down!"
-As the climbers tried to fathom
-what he had in mind...
-..Jimi started his descent
-after packing up his tools.
-Everyone followed him
-until they reached the bottom.
-Some were rather confused,
-some were rather upset or angry.
-But Jimi didn't mind,
-they had no reason to follow him up.
-As he headed for home, he said...
-.."I wonder what I'll do tomorrow?"
-If there's a lesson in this story...
-..a story and a half,
-..just make sure you take care
-when you decide what to do.
-Don't get lost
-as you pursue your dreams.
-Make sure you know where you're
-going and be happy with your choice.
-Unless you're Jimi Joblot -
-he's always heading upwards.
-He'll build a crazy staircase...
-..just because he can.
