-Taran was a goldfish.

-He lived in one of those plastic

-bags filled with water...

-..that you find in funfairs.

-From his bag,

-he could see the big wheel...

-..the helter-skelter

-and the ghost train.

-Each morning, he would wake up

-to the sound of the merry-go-round.

-Each night, he would fall asleep...

-..when the final light was switched

-off and everything was locked up.

-Taran was a fairground prize.

-One night, as spring turned to

-summer and the days became longer...

-..Rhys and his family

-visited the fair.

-They played the game

-and Rhys won Taran.

-Taran had the perfect life

-in his bowl on the table.

-He would watch Rhys and Jacob

-play their computer games...

-..and listen to Mam

-reading them a story every night.

-Taran would fall asleep

-and dream of the fair.

-One fine morning, Dad said,

-"This bowl is too small for Taran.

-"I've decided he should live

-in the garden pond.

-"There's more room for him

-in there.

-"He can even have friends

-to keep him company."

-"Will he be safe?" asked Rhys.

-"He'll be fine,"

-replied Dad confidently.

-"After all, he's a clever fish.

-"Clever fish are intelligent

-enough to swim at the bottom."

-Taran listened carefully

-and remembered....

-.."I must remember to swim

-at the bottom of the pond."

-The pond at the bottom of the garden

-was an excellent place to live.

-Clear water,

-green plants, shiny rocks...

-..and it was larger than the bowl.

-Taran could swim

-from one end to the other...

-..through the plants and reeds.

-He was having so much fun.

-Later that day,

-Taran had his first visitor.

-A large, fat toad.

-"Hello!" croaked the toad.

-"I am Caradog Hopfawr.

-Welcome to the garden.

-"Who, pray tell, are you?"

-"Hello, Mr Hopfawr. I'm Taran,"

-answered the little fish.

-"Glad to meet you."

-"It's lovely seeing a new face

-in the pond," said the toad.

-"Many fish have lived here.

-"Large fish. Small fish.

-"Colourful fish. Fat fish.

-"I come to say hello to them all."

-"Where are they now?" asked Taran.

-"They don't stay very long,"

-answered Caradog.

-"They don't learn

-to swim at the bottom."

-"Oh?" answered Taran.

-"It's crucial, Taran," said Caradog.

-"You must remember

-one important rule.

-"When you see a shadow

-darkening the water...

-"..you must swim

-at the bottom of the pond."

-Taran wasn't sure what Caradog

-Hopfawr or Mr Morgan meant...

-..but he did exactly

-as they told him.

-Throughout the summer,

-he swam in the pond.

-Sometimes,

-Caradog Hopfawr would appear...

-..and they'd play and laugh all day.

-But whenever a shadow

-darkened the pond...

-..Taran would swim at the bottom and

-wait for the shadow to disappear.

-Early one morning,

-towards the end of the summer...

-..Dad visited the pond

-at the bottom of the garden.

-He was carrying a large bowl.

-"I have a surprise for you, Taran,"

-said Mr Morgan.

-"Some company for you."

-Just then, he poured the contents

-of the bowl into the water.

-After a few seconds,

-a fish swam elegantly out of it.

-Taran couldn't believe his luck.

-"A new friend," he thought.

-"How exciting.

-We can do so much together.

-"I can't wait."

-He swam across the pond

-to meet the new fish...

-..which swam slowly

-through the reeds.

-"Hello,"

-said Taran to the colourful fish.

-"I'm so glad to meet you.

-"I'm Taran."

-"Yes, I'm sure."

-Taran didn't expect

-that answer somehow...

-..but he followed the fish

-and tried again.

-"Yes, um... well, whatever.

-"I'm a goldfish."

-"I know everything

-there is to know about you,"...

-..said the fish,

-cutting across Taran.

-"Mr Morgan and Rhys

-talked about you indoors."

-He looked down his nose at Taran...

-..or whatever fish have

-at the end of their bodies...

-..to show their disdain.

-"You were won in a fairground.

-Correct?

-"Just think - a fair.

-"I'm not sure if you're worthy

-to share a pond with me.

-"You see, my name

-is Goronwy ap Myrddin Wych III.

-"I'm an important fish.

-"We're valuable fish.

-"You can't win us

-in a fairground competition.

-"Look at my shiny head.

-"You see,

-we're better than goldfish.

-"I'm better than you.

-"This is my pond now.

-"If you do as I say...

-"..I might let you stay here

-as my servant.

-Poor Taran.

-He only wanted to be a friend.

-This was the worst day ever.

-Mr Look At Me Servants

-wasn't a nice fish at all...

-..but Taran persisted.

-"I'm sorry if you don't think

-I'm good enough for you.

-"Where the Morgans found me

-has nothing to do with anything.

-"You might be a shinier fish

-than me...

-"..but we're the same

-on the inside."

-"No, we're not,"

-replied Goronwy ap Myrddin Wych.

-He was right.

-Taran was a lovely fish

-on the inside.

-The other fish

-was nasty and unpleasant.

-"As you wish," said Taran.

-"But there is one important rule

-in this pond.

-"If you ever see a shadow

-darkening the water...

-"..you must swim at the bottom."

-"Rules?" said Goronwy.

-"You're telling me about the rules?

-"I don't listen to anyone's rules.

-"I won't swim

-at the bottom of the pond.

-"Only at the top, where everyone

-can see me shining in the sunshine.

-"I won't swim at the bottom.

-That's where you swim.

-"I won't swim as low as you."

-To prove his point,

-he swam to the top of the pond...

-..even though a large shadow

-appeared to darken the water.

-"And another thing," he said...

-Taran never found out

-what the other thing was.

-Just then, a heron,

-a large bird with a long beak...

-..dived down to the pond,

-grabbed Goronwy in its beak...

-..and flew away into the distance.

-Taran learnt two things that day.

-He learnt why he had to swim

-at the bottom of the pond.

-And he learnt that not everything

-that shines is pleasant or sensible.
