Should I always do as I'm told?

Well, it depends on what you've been told to do, I suppose.

Sometimes, it's for your own good.

Like being told to clean your teeth.

Or being told to wear your cycle helmet.

Hugo, I want you in your bed in ten seconds!

Or being told to be in bed by bed time.

But shouldn't they just ask me, not tell me?

Well, they could ask you, I suppose.

But then you could say yes or no.

Eurgh!

So, if they ask if I want to tidy up, I don't have to?

But if you never tidy, imagine the mess.

What about when you cross the road?

Mum tells me to wait. She doesn't ask me to wait.

Because she wants you to be safe.

And my sister and I always tell our puppy to sit.

We don't ask.

Because you want puppy to be safe, too.

And sometimes there are signs that tell you what to do.

Like warning signs.

Ouch!

So, lots of people tell me to do things -

things that are for my own good!

But what if someone tells me to do something that's not for my own good?

So, if I think it's wrong, or might hurt someone,

then it's OK to disobey them?

But sometimes your mum might tell you to do something

you don't want to do.

Like play with my baby sister. Boring!

But if your mummy is telling you, maybe you should do it?

OK, so, the things I'm told to do,

are things I have to do,

IF it's the right person telling me.

Wait a minute, Hugo,

that sign says your sister is too small to go on the bouncy castle.

So, if my parents tell me to do something I think is wrong,

what should I do?
