How can wolfbloods run so fast and for so long?

0:00:020:00:06

Why are their senses so intense?

SHE SNIFFS

0:00:080:00:10

And why is family so important to them?

0:00:100:00:12

It all comes down to the extraordinary wild wolves

0:00:140:00:17

that they share so many qualities with.

In this episode, we'll explore wolf intelligence and find out

0:00:540:00:57

how their cunning nature has played a part

0:00:570:00:59

in saving them from extinction.

0:00:590:01:01

Being a wolfblood does have its advantages.

0:01:080:01:10

They're extremely strong, lightning fast

0:01:100:01:13

and have super senses.

0:01:130:01:14

But it does have its drawbacks too.

0:01:140:01:17

It's not always easy for Maddy and Rhydian

0:01:170:01:19

to lead a normal teenage life.

0:01:190:01:20

They have to constantly have their wits about them

0:01:200:01:22

to stop people finding out the secret.

0:01:220:01:24

Because of this, they have to be able to think on their feet

0:01:240:01:27

and be very good at problem-solving.

0:01:270:01:29

Leading up to Maddy's first transformation,

0:01:290:01:31

she also had exams to think about

0:01:310:01:33

and in one of them, the pressure got too much and she almost transformed,

0:01:330:01:36

forcing Rhydian to come to her rescue

0:01:360:01:38

with a resourceful distraction.

0:01:380:01:39

Nice of you to show your face, Rhydian.

0:01:420:01:44

Now, settle down, everyone.

0:01:520:01:54

You have exactly one hour starting...

0:01:540:01:57

..now. You may open your papers.

0:02:520:02:55

Don't panic! Stay calm, everybody, please.

0:02:550:02:57

Maddy, it's over.

0:03:000:03:01

OK?

0:03:010:03:02

-SHE PANTS

-Keep calm. Deep breaths, yeah?

0:03:040:03:07

Rhydian Morris, you are in big trouble, young man.

0:03:100:03:13

So intelligence and problem-solving ability is clearly important

0:03:150:03:18

to wolfbloods if they want to keep their secret.

0:03:180:03:21

But is it part of their wolf-like abilities?

0:03:210:03:23

Well, actually, it could be,

0:03:230:03:24

cos wolves are known for being particularly smart.

0:03:240:03:26

So what makes them so clever?

0:03:260:03:28

They have big brains, 30% bigger than the average dog.

0:03:320:03:36

They have good memories and they have demonstrated the ability

0:03:360:03:39

to learn and apply knowledge.

0:03:390:03:41

There are lots of accounts

0:03:440:03:45

that illustrate this capacity for learning.

0:03:450:03:48

For example, during the heyday of buffalo hunting,

0:03:480:03:51

wolves apparently learned to head towards the sound of gunshot...

0:03:510:03:54

GUNSHOT

0:03:540:03:55

..then would wait while hunters skinned out the buffalo

0:03:550:03:58

and eat the abandoned carcasses as soon as the hunters left.

0:03:580:04:02

So how else does this intelligence benefit them

0:04:050:04:07

in their everyday lives?

0:04:070:04:09

Well, it's thought that it could help them to survive

0:04:090:04:12

in the diverse range of changing environments

0:04:120:04:14

that they make their home.

0:04:140:04:16

They may have become good at problem-solving

0:04:160:04:18

because of the variety of challenges they face

0:04:180:04:20

in the many different habitats that they live in...

0:04:200:04:23

..from frozen wastelands to dense forests.

0:04:240:04:27

And depending on where they are and what time of the year it is

0:04:290:04:33

their food sources vary hugely,

0:04:330:04:35

so they have to be able to decide what food they want to look for.

0:04:350:04:38

And that's when their excellent memories come in handy.

0:04:410:04:43

They learn from experience that herds of prey don't move randomly,

0:04:480:04:51

but visit their favourite feeding grounds

0:04:510:04:53

at certain times of year.

0:04:530:04:55

This knowledge is passed from one generation to the next,

0:04:550:04:58

and from year to year they can remember

0:04:580:05:00

where their prey should be at any time.

0:05:000:05:02

WOLF PANTS

0:05:030:05:05

It's almost as if they have some kind of mental map of the area

0:05:050:05:08

and the different prey sources that live in it.

0:05:080:05:10

All their prey items have their pros and cons

0:05:120:05:14

and working out what to hunt and when is vital to a successful kill.

0:05:140:05:18

They need this learned knowledge to help them select

0:05:200:05:22

the easiest prey to hunt at that time.

0:05:220:05:24

For example, they know that bighorn sheep are relatively small,

0:05:240:05:28

but they live in groups and have serious headgear...

0:05:280:05:31

..whereas animals like moose are much bigger but are solitary

0:05:340:05:37

and roam large territories.

0:05:370:05:39

This ability to make mental maps of their territories

0:05:430:05:45

and remember their prey's movements

0:05:450:05:47

is probably key to their success as predators.

0:05:470:05:50

So perhaps Maddy and Rhydian's problem-solving ability

0:06:070:06:10

is partly down to the fact they're wolfbloods.

0:06:100:06:12

But in their quest to keep who they really are a secret,

0:06:120:06:15

it's not always about solving problems.

0:06:150:06:18

Sometimes they have to be cunning too,

0:06:180:06:20

like when Rhydian was locked up in the police station

0:06:200:06:22

during the full moon,

0:06:220:06:23

Maddy and her parents had to think of a way to outwit the police

0:06:230:06:27

so they'd release Rhydian before he transformed.

0:06:270:06:29

They're keeping him overnight.

0:06:310:06:32

They can't.

0:06:330:06:35

-They can't!

-Hang on, Dan.

0:06:350:06:36

-If you run now, you can make it to the moor.

-And leave you?

0:06:360:06:39

Rhydian's going to be in that cell when the moon rises.

0:06:390:06:41

At least you can get away.

0:06:410:06:43

That's it!

0:06:450:06:46

You can get Rhydian out of there, Dad.

0:06:480:06:50

If you tell them what will happen if you don't.

0:06:500:06:52

What?!

0:06:520:06:54

You need to tell them...

0:06:540:06:55

I suggest you take your family home

0:07:050:07:07

and come back for this one in the morning. I'll show you out.

0:07:070:07:09

Very well. But there's something that you need to know.

0:07:090:07:12

Rhydian suffers from a psychological condition

0:07:120:07:15

known as clinical lycanthropy.

0:07:150:07:17

-He thinks he's a werewolf?

-Exactly.

0:07:170:07:20

It's a recognised psychological condition.

0:07:200:07:24

Every full moon he gets distressed, even uncontrollable.

0:07:240:07:27

And I'm not talking bad behaviour. I mean serious physical symptoms.

0:07:270:07:32

HE PANTS

0:07:320:07:33

Right, right. OK.

0:07:330:07:36

If you don't believe me you can talk to his psychiatrist.

0:07:360:07:38

Ahh!

0:07:380:07:40

HE GROWLS

0:07:410:07:45

Panic attacks, animal behaviour.

0:07:450:07:49

Growling.

0:07:490:07:50

HE GROWLS

0:07:500:07:51

Snarling.

0:07:510:07:53

Scratching at the door trying to get out.

0:07:530:07:55

HE ROARS

0:07:550:07:57

-I really don't...

-Rhydian is in your custody.

0:07:570:08:01

And now that you understand the full context of his behaviour,

0:08:010:08:05

if he comes to any harm in that room, it's your fault.

0:08:050:08:08

Inspector Bolton.

0:08:080:08:09

Please, release him into my care before he does any real harm.

0:08:140:08:17

Navigating teenage life may seem very different to a life as a wolf,

0:08:200:08:24

but, surprisingly, over the centuries,

0:08:240:08:26

wolves have had to outwit people a lot

0:08:260:08:29

and if accounts are to be believed, then they're pretty good at it.

0:08:290:08:32

In North America, wolves have been hunted throughout history

0:08:370:08:40

because they were known to kill livestock

0:08:400:08:42

and they were wiped out from huge parts of their range.

0:08:420:08:45

But despite widespread trapping, poisoning and shooting,

0:08:470:08:51

some individuals dodged the persecutors

0:08:510:08:53

and in the process they became local legends.

0:08:530:08:55

One of those legends was a wolf called Lobo.

0:08:570:08:59

GUNSHOT AND RICOCHET

0:08:590:09:01

Ranchers tried to kill him by poisoning carcasses,

0:09:050:09:08

but he didn't eat them.

0:09:080:09:09

They tried to kill him with traps and by hunting parties,

0:09:100:09:13

but these efforts also failed.

0:09:130:09:15

Eventually, a man called Ernest Thompson Seton

0:09:200:09:23

was offered a reward for capturing Lobo.

0:09:230:09:26

He subsequently wrote a book about this experience,

0:09:260:09:28

because Lobo was so successful at avoiding capture.

0:09:280:09:31

What initially started as a two-week job became an epic battle

0:09:330:09:37

which lasted months and ultimately changed the way

0:09:370:09:40

Seton felt about wolves.

0:09:400:09:41

He tried all methods of hunting him down,

0:09:430:09:45

but Lobo always managed to get away.

0:09:450:09:48

Wolf biologists believe that when you repeatedly trap

0:09:560:09:59

and catch wolves in a particular area, they get educated.

0:09:590:10:03

You teach them how to avoid getting caught.

0:10:030:10:05

So wolves like Lobo that survived being captured

0:10:070:10:10

learned from the traps, guns and the poison

0:10:100:10:12

that people were using to kill them.

0:10:120:10:14

Seton did eventually kill Lobo by capturing and killing

0:10:160:10:19

his mate Blanca, then tempting him in with her body.

0:10:190:10:22

WOLF WHIMPERS

0:10:240:10:25

Lobo's loyalty to his mate was his undoing.

0:10:250:10:28

He was the last wolf that Seton killed

0:10:280:10:30

and Seton's experience with Lobo permanently changed

0:10:300:10:33

his attitude to these incredible creatures.

0:10:330:10:35

His story of Lobo touched the hearts of many

0:10:370:10:39

and is thought to be partly responsible for changing views

0:10:390:10:42

towards the environment

0:10:420:10:43

and may have played a part in starting the conservation movement.

0:10:430:10:46

So although that is a sad story, it did have positive outcomes.

0:10:470:10:51

It shows that wolves have the capacity to be extremely intelligent

0:10:510:10:55

and that's important when it comes to catching their prey

0:10:550:10:57

and avoiding being caught themselves.

0:10:570:10:59

So it's not just teenagers who turn into wolves

0:10:590:11:02

that have to be cunning and clever.

0:11:020:11:03

-You have to get out of here, like, now.

-What? Why?

0:11:040:11:08

-I'm comfy.

-The blood test, you idiot. They'll see you're not human.

0:11:080:11:11

-WHISPERING:

-They'll find out you're a wolfblood.

0:11:110:11:13

-DOOR BUZZES

-Let me get the door for you.
