How can wolfbloods run so fast and for so long?

0:00:020:00:05

Why are their senses so intense?

0:00:060:00:08

And why is family so important to them?

0:00:100:00:12

It all comes down to the extraordinary wild wolves

0:00:140:00:17

that they share so many qualities with.

0:00:170:00:20

In this series, we'll uncover the truth about wolves

0:00:200:00:23

and reveal just why wolfbloods are the way that they are.

0:00:230:00:26

This is Wolfblood Uncovered.

0:00:260:00:28

In this episode, we'll find out how wolves are built

0:00:530:00:56

and discover how their super strength

0:00:560:00:58

and remarkable agility make them such adaptable predators.

0:00:580:01:01

Because Maddy and Rhydian are wolfbloods,

0:01:080:01:11

they have incredible abilities, which they need to be careful to control.

0:01:110:01:14

When they're around their friends and they see what they're capable of,

0:01:140:01:17

they definitely stand out from the crowd.

0:01:170:01:19

Sometimes they use these skills, like their fantastic agility, on impulse.

0:01:190:01:23

This happened when Rhydian avoided a minor disaster in the school playground.

0:01:230:01:27

Tom!

0:01:270:01:28

If she can hide from us when she wants, that means, when we see her...

0:01:330:01:37

It's cos she wants us too...

0:01:370:01:39

Oh, no. The window!

0:01:400:01:41

-Sam...

-Yeah?

-Go and get Miss Graham.

0:01:470:01:50

All you have to do is stop the ball going in the goal.

0:01:540:01:56

-Football really isn't my thing.

-Just play along, mate.

0:01:560:01:59

Didn't you hear what I said? Stop the ball.

0:02:020:02:04

Or are you too cool to dive?

0:02:040:02:06

-Do it again.

-Don't want to embarrass you.

0:02:060:02:08

-Do it again.

-Jimi, take the penalty.

0:02:090:02:12

APPLAUSE

0:02:180:02:20

-What do you think, Miss?

-I think we have a new goalie.

0:02:200:02:24

That was a pretty impressive save,

0:02:260:02:28

and Rhydian's classmates were very keen for him

0:02:280:02:30

to start playing football with them, cos,

0:02:300:02:32

although he had no training, he was more agile and better than

0:02:320:02:35

any of them could be, so would be a great asset to the team.

0:02:350:02:39

This is because he's got the agility

0:02:390:02:41

and physical capabilities of a wild wolf.

0:02:410:02:44

Wolves really come into their own when it comes to athletic ability.

0:02:440:02:48

Like Rhydian, they're very springy,

0:02:480:02:50

and, when running, can cover up to five metres in a single bound.

0:02:500:02:54

That's from here...

0:02:540:02:55

..to here!

0:03:000:03:02

For a moment, they become airborne.

0:03:050:03:08

As well as jumping a long way, they can also jump pretty high,

0:03:100:03:14

which can come in handy when they need to defend themselves.

0:03:140:03:17

But their impressive agility is most important

0:03:280:03:31

when it comes to finding food.

0:03:310:03:33

Wolves are able to live in a wide range of environments -

0:03:350:03:38

from deserts, plains and savannas,

0:03:380:03:40

to forests, mountains and swamps -

0:03:400:03:42

so they have to be able to negotiate a huge variety of terrains.

0:03:420:03:46

To find food in these varied places,

0:03:480:03:50

they have to be able to run, climb,

0:03:500:03:53

trot, and even swim.

0:03:530:03:56

If they're not running down gigantic musk oxen and imposing elk,

0:03:570:04:01

they're fishing for salmon, digging for insects,

0:04:010:04:04

or pouncing on small mammals.

0:04:040:04:06

So, how are these magnificent mammals built for this varied

0:04:080:04:11

and physical lifestyle?

0:04:110:04:12

They have lean bodies,

0:04:140:04:16

narrow chests,

0:04:160:04:19

strong backs,

0:04:190:04:21

and long, powerful legs...

0:04:210:04:24

..perfect for springing forward.

0:04:250:04:27

And they have quite amazing feet.

0:04:290:04:31

Their large and long toes take most of their weight,

0:04:350:04:38

rather than the entire soles of their feet.

0:04:380:04:41

This makes them similar to hooves,

0:04:420:04:44

which means that they can move quickly and quietly.

0:04:440:04:47

But, whereas hooves aren't always suited to uneven ground,

0:04:470:04:50

wolves' feet are.

0:04:500:04:51

That's because, as opposed to their back paws,

0:04:550:04:58

which have four toes, their front paws have five.

0:04:580:05:01

But that fifth toe doesn't touch the ground.

0:05:030:05:06

Instead, it's used for clasping, and enables them to grip varied

0:05:060:05:09

and bumpy ground.

0:05:090:05:11

And if all that wasn't impressive enough, their paws are also

0:05:130:05:16

slightly webbed and they're as big as our hands so act as snowshoes...

0:05:160:05:21

distributing their weight more evenly,

0:05:210:05:23

so they don't sink into the snow.

0:05:230:05:24

It's not just their body shape that makes them physically capable

0:05:270:05:30

and able to live in such a range of environments, they're also very

0:05:300:05:35

intelligent, with big brains, substantially bigger than most dogs.

0:05:350:05:39

And they have very versatile fur, with long guard hairs that repel

0:05:400:05:44

moisture and a thick woolly undercoat for insulation against the cold.

0:05:440:05:49

When it warms up in spring, a short summer coat grows,

0:05:490:05:52

which helps to keep them cooler.

0:05:520:05:54

So it makes sense that Maddy and Rhydian aren't like normal

0:05:550:05:58

teenagers, cos they can turn into these awesome animals.

0:05:580:06:01

But there's more to their abilities than just outstanding agility.

0:06:010:06:05

They're also super strong,

0:06:050:06:07

and super strength is something else which could easily give

0:06:070:06:09

the secret away, so they have to be careful not to lose their temper

0:06:090:06:13

or let their emotions get the better of them

0:06:130:06:14

when having disputes with friends.

0:06:140:06:16

This happened to Rhydian on his very first day at school,

0:06:160:06:19

when he was getting a bit bullied for being the new boy.

0:06:190:06:21

He almost blew his cover straightaway.

0:06:210:06:23

BOYS GIGGLE

0:06:230:06:24

I thought I smelled something funny.

0:06:240:06:26

Is that your lunch, Welshy?

0:06:260:06:27

I'm not even Welsh.

0:06:290:06:31

Oooh!

0:06:310:06:33

Got a problem, leek boy?

0:06:450:06:47

Argh!

0:06:490:06:50

What on earth is going on here?! Huh?!

0:06:550:06:57

-What are you doing?

-It's all right.

-Get out!

-Just breathe!

0:07:000:07:02

You have to get out!

0:07:020:07:04

Argh!

0:07:090:07:11

I'm so sorry.

0:07:140:07:16

HE GROWLS

0:07:290:07:31

HE GROWLS

0:07:410:07:43

Rhydian!

0:07:470:07:49

Rhydian's super strength was clearly evident in that scene.

0:08:280:08:32

He jumped higher than these lockers, pushed Jimi onto the floor,

0:08:320:08:34

and caused all that damage in the dark room.

0:08:340:08:36

So how strong are wolves, and why do they need this extreme strength?

0:08:360:08:40

Wolves are the largest members of the dog family,

0:08:460:08:49

and go for by far the biggest prey.

0:08:490:08:51

They often attack, kill and eat animals that are much larger

0:08:550:08:58

than they are, so, to bring them down, they need to be very strong.

0:08:580:09:03

In North America, they regularly take on buffalo.

0:09:040:09:07

Buffalo can weigh over a tonne.

0:09:140:09:16

That's the weight of a small car, so they're a formidable opponent.

0:09:160:09:19

Taking on prey as big as buffalo is risky,

0:09:220:09:24

but these wolves have learned from each other and know how to do it.

0:09:240:09:28

When they get close enough, they launch themselves forward

0:09:290:09:32

and grasp it with their extremely powerful jaws.

0:09:320:09:35

The force of their bite is incredible -

0:09:450:09:47

three times that of a human bite -

0:09:470:09:49

and much greater than even the strongest of domestic dogs.

0:09:490:09:52

They latch on with these ferocious jaws

0:09:540:09:56

and use their entire body weight to drag their prey down.

0:09:560:10:00

They're very resilient and won't give up easily.

0:10:020:10:04

Even though this animal has the capacity to trample them,

0:10:070:10:09

they're utterly determined to keep hold of it

0:10:090:10:12

and use all their might to stop it from escaping.

0:10:120:10:14

Wolves are so strong that they can take down animals

0:10:200:10:22

many times their size.

0:10:220:10:24

That's really impressive when you think that they weigh less than I do.

0:10:240:10:27

They're extremely agile too.

0:10:270:10:29

This strength and agility makes them brilliant hunters.

0:10:290:10:32

The wolfbloods have a lot of fun with these special skills,

0:10:320:10:34

and, when used in moderation, can make school life pretty interesting.

0:10:340:10:39

You coming, or what?

0:10:410:10:42

Stop where you are!

0:10:470:10:48

Stop him!
