I've been called "Voldemort" and "Witch", and stuff.

0:00:170:00:21

They call me Baldy, No Hair Freak...

0:00:210:00:24

"Oh, look, it's Chicken Skin."

0:00:240:00:26

I'm Holly, and I get called horrid names, too.

0:00:260:00:30

It's all because we look a bit different. But our bullies don't know what we've been through.

0:00:300:00:35

When I was 20 months old, I was badly burned.

0:00:350:00:39

There was a fire in our house and I was trapped.

0:00:390:00:42

A cigarette lighter caught fire to my pyjamas.

0:00:420:00:45

I pulled down the chip pan and it just went all over my head.

0:00:450:00:50

I was also burnt by a chip pan.

0:00:500:00:53

The scars from my burns have left me with bald patches.

0:00:530:00:57

I've decided to show them to you,

0:00:570:00:59

but normally, I hide them under my headband.

0:00:590:01:02

To try and look like everyone else,

0:01:040:01:06

I'm having special surgery to give me more hair.

0:01:060:01:09

So people won't call me names.

0:01:090:01:12

But whether my surgery works or not,

0:01:120:01:14

making friends with other children who have been burnt

0:01:140:01:18

will help me change the way I feel about myself.

0:01:180:01:21

I live in Manchester with my mum and dad, my sister Jade,

0:01:250:01:29

bothers Josh and Alex, as well as our two dogs, Taz and Kato.

0:01:290:01:34

In almost every way, I'm just like any other 12-year-old,

0:01:340:01:38

but my burn scars do make me look a bit different.

0:01:380:01:41

My accident happened at home.

0:01:410:01:44

The day of her accident... I was cooking in the kitchen.

0:01:460:01:51

Me and my sister ran into the kitchen and we sat on the oven door.

0:01:510:01:56

As she did so, she tilted the cooker, and the chip pan

0:01:560:02:00

-fell off the cooker.

-The chip pan fell on my head and my arm.

0:02:000:02:04

Then I rang her nana. She said to put her in a cold bath, which I did.

0:02:040:02:09

I bathed her down in the bath and then we rang for an ambulance.

0:02:090:02:14

The ambulance took her to hospital.

0:02:140:02:16

They didn't know how badly she'd been burnt,

0:02:160:02:19

so it was very scary.

0:02:190:02:21

My mum and dad said that I was very lucky to be alive,

0:02:230:02:26

because the burns were really bad.

0:02:260:02:30

An easy way to understand burns is by thinking of skin

0:02:350:02:39

as an onion with lots of layers.

0:02:390:02:42

The more serious a burn, the more layers of skin are damaged

0:02:420:02:46

and that's when you can become very, very sick.

0:02:460:02:49

All I can remember is my family used to come and see me every day

0:02:490:02:53

and that I had quite a few operations.

0:02:530:02:57

Although it happened a long time ago, you can still see

0:02:570:03:01

I had an accident, because my deep burns left me with scars.

0:03:010:03:05

The chip pan burned my arm here.

0:03:050:03:07

This one reminds me of a key, cos it's shaped like a key.

0:03:070:03:12

And I got burned on my head.

0:03:120:03:15

Hair can't grow on a scar,

0:03:150:03:17

which means I have bald patches on my head.

0:03:170:03:20

My scars do bother me.

0:03:200:03:22

It's even a big deal for me to show them to you.

0:03:220:03:25

Because I look different, people sometimes stare or make fun of me,

0:03:250:03:30

so I make sure I always cover my head.

0:03:300:03:33

When I go outside, I don't really like people to look at it

0:03:330:03:36

because they can say nasty things.

0:03:360:03:39

If I put a headband on, people think there's nothing there.

0:03:390:03:43

When I first started high school,

0:03:430:03:45

I felt happy cos I could meet new people,

0:03:450:03:47

but I also felt worried because I knew

0:03:470:03:50

that somebody would say something about my head.

0:03:500:03:54

People used to say that I had cancer

0:03:540:03:57

and that I'm the girl who has bald patches,

0:03:570:04:00

and it made me feel angry.

0:04:000:04:02

I'm not basically any different to them,

0:04:020:04:05

it's just what I look like.

0:04:050:04:08

But my three best friends are always there for me.

0:04:080:04:11

It makes me sad when people bully her.

0:04:110:04:13

I've known you since primary school, so I know what you've been through.

0:04:130:04:17

It's sad that people call you names

0:04:170:04:19

but they don't know what you've been through or anything about you.

0:04:190:04:24

When people pick on you it makes me sad and angry,

0:04:240:04:27

because they were upsetting you and I don't like seeing you upset.

0:04:270:04:31

You can't learn when people are bullying you,

0:04:310:04:33

cos it goes round in your head.

0:04:330:04:35

Instead of bullying you to find out about you,

0:04:350:04:37

they should just ask. It's not like you bite. Well, you might.

0:04:370:04:41

ALL LAUGH

0:04:410:04:42

If it happens, I just walk away.

0:04:420:04:45

There's no point staying, they'll just say something even meaner.

0:04:450:04:49

Being picked on because of how you look

0:04:500:04:53

can really knock your confidence,

0:04:530:04:55

but there's a place that tries to build it back up.

0:04:550:04:58

It's called Burns Camp.

0:04:580:05:00

-Are you looking forward to it?

-Yep.

0:05:000:05:02

-What are you looking forward to the most?

-Climbing.

-Climbing? What else?

0:05:020:05:08

Manchester Fire Service and the same medical team

0:05:080:05:11

who've looked after me since the accident

0:05:110:05:13

help organise the Burns Camp I'm going to in the Lake District.

0:05:130:05:17

Today, I feel happy and excited because it's going to be really fun.

0:05:170:05:22

You can be burnt on your face, arm, leg or your head

0:05:220:05:25

and nobody will say anything.

0:05:250:05:27

They know what everyone's been through so they won't pick on you.

0:05:270:05:31

They'll have been through a similar situation.

0:05:310:05:34

Who am I meant to sit next to on the coach?

0:05:340:05:37

Now we're about to set off, the idea of leaving my mum

0:05:370:05:41

suddenly seems really scary.

0:05:410:05:43

Make your goodbyes now, then we'll

0:05:430:05:46

take the kids down to the coach.

0:05:460:05:48

Have a good time and don't be frightened.

0:05:480:05:52

When we got here, I felt a bit homesick.

0:05:580:06:01

-I miss home.

-If you ever need someone to talk to

0:06:010:06:05

all you have to do is come and talk to me.

0:06:050:06:08

You're going to be all right.

0:06:080:06:10

But as soon as we get going, my nerves are washed away.

0:06:100:06:14

Today's better cos I don't feel homesick.

0:06:160:06:18

I'm sure we're going to have lots of fun this week.

0:06:180:06:22

Yeah!

0:06:220:06:24

It goes right up to the ceiling.

0:06:240:06:27

I'd give it a go but I think I'd only get halfway.

0:06:270:06:30

Climbing makes me feel strong and good about myself.

0:06:320:06:36

But what goes up must come down.

0:06:360:06:38

Hold on to the rope and let go. Just jump.

0:06:380:06:42

SHE SCREAMS

0:06:420:06:43

-See.

-That was hard!

0:06:430:06:45

It's great to talk to other children who know exactly how I feel.

0:06:450:06:50

It can be a huge burn, or can't walk,

0:06:500:06:52

or can't raise your arms, you're still all the same inside.

0:06:520:06:56

To be treated differently is unfair.

0:06:560:06:58

Robert is 14 and he is from Accrington.

0:06:580:07:01

When I was four years old,

0:07:010:07:03

I accidentally set myself on fire with a cigarette lighter.

0:07:030:07:06

I was burned from the top of my neck to the bottom of my chest

0:07:060:07:13

and then, like, on my arms.

0:07:130:07:16

People used to say, "Oh, look, it's Chicken Skin. It's Freddie Krueger."

0:07:190:07:24

And then I'd get into fights.

0:07:240:07:25

But after the first Burns Camp, I was probably less angry.

0:07:250:07:30

It did change me.

0:07:300:07:32

The older ones tell you to do this and that, and when you do it

0:07:320:07:36

you don't get bullied as much.

0:07:360:07:38

So it's been a lot easier since after Burns Camp.

0:07:380:07:41

The best thing about camp is you can meet new people

0:07:430:07:47

who've got the same burns as you, or different.

0:07:470:07:50

That's Leeah from Liverpool. She's 11 and has scars

0:07:500:07:54

just like me, but hers are hidden under her clothes.

0:07:540:07:58

When I was seven years old,

0:07:580:07:59

I got burned by a boiling hot pan of water...

0:07:590:08:02

which was really painful.

0:08:020:08:05

I remember when I got into hospital, I had freezing cold tea towels

0:08:070:08:13

all over my chest, and it was all blistered and all red.

0:08:130:08:17

I had an operation so they could cut the skin off the back of my leg

0:08:170:08:21

and then place it onto my chest.

0:08:210:08:23

I had about 160 stitches in my chest.

0:08:230:08:27

When I see all my mates wearing dresses, it makes me feel left out,

0:08:280:08:33

because I can't wear a dress in case it gets sunburned

0:08:330:08:37

and I end up back in hospital.

0:08:370:08:39

At Burns Camp, it's nice to meet all the different people

0:08:390:08:42

who have the same problems as me, like scars in different places.

0:08:420:08:49

No-one cares that I have a scar, they just want to be my friend

0:08:490:08:52

and they treat me like normal people would.

0:08:520:08:55

-I got mine when a chip pan fell on my head.

-Same.

0:08:580:09:01

The boy who had an accident just like mine

0:09:010:09:04

is 11-year-old Harry who also lives in Manchester.

0:09:040:09:09

When I was one-and-a-half, I pulled down the chip pan

0:09:090:09:12

and it just went all over my head.

0:09:120:09:14

It burnt right here. It's left loads of scars.

0:09:140:09:19

People call me names because of my burns.

0:09:190:09:22

They call me Baldy, No Hair Freak...

0:09:220:09:25

It's just really frustrating.

0:09:250:09:27

My burn doesn't affect me.

0:09:270:09:29

It's not stopping me from doing dance or anything I love.

0:09:290:09:34

Burns Camp helped me a lot.

0:09:340:09:36

You meet children who have similar burns to you, which is pretty cool.

0:09:360:09:40

What's it like being the only one at school that's been burnt?

0:09:440:09:48

-It feels kind of weird.

-Yeah.

0:09:480:09:51

Especially in PE when you have to get changed and everyone's watching.

0:09:510:09:55

-You're like the odd one out at school.

-Yeah.

0:09:550:09:59

-But here you just feel...even.

-Yeah.

0:09:590:10:03

I feel more confident, because you know you're not the only one.

0:10:030:10:08

Although it's hard to live with scars,

0:10:080:10:11

we all believe they have made us stronger.

0:10:110:10:14

Sometimes I feel proud of it,

0:10:140:10:16

because I'm different to everybody else and I stand out.

0:10:160:10:20

My burn doesn't affect me a lot,

0:10:210:10:23

it's not stopping me from doing absolutely anything.

0:10:230:10:28

I'm disappointed that my burns are where everyone can see them,

0:10:290:10:33

but proud that they've probably changed me for the better.

0:10:330:10:38

Our burns show we've gone through something really difficult

0:10:380:10:42

in our lives, and survived.

0:10:420:10:43

So compared to that, gorge walking is easy-peasy.

0:10:430:10:47

And what we do is climb over rocks and waterfalls.

0:10:470:10:52

Being at Burns Camp helps us take risks,

0:10:540:10:57

like splashing camp leader Simon. He splashed me back!

0:10:570:11:02

And I got very, very wet.

0:11:030:11:05

The water was very, very cold.

0:11:090:11:11

ALL SCREAM

0:11:110:11:13

The week has flown by and I can't believe it's nearly time to go home.

0:11:150:11:20

Now I'm packed. Last sock in.

0:11:200:11:23

I've had 100% a good time

0:11:240:11:26

and I'm looking forward to come back next year.

0:11:260:11:31

But there is one last thing to do.

0:11:310:11:33

Each of us has written down a wish to hang on a special tree.

0:11:330:11:37

If you all take one of the labels... It'll be somebody else's.

0:11:370:11:41

You might be helping somebody else's wish come true.

0:11:410:11:44

I wish my burns go away.

0:11:440:11:47

Even though we've had a great time here at Burns Camp,

0:11:510:11:54

many of us still wish we just looked like everyone else.

0:11:540:11:58

That's why I'm going to have surgery which I hope will give me extra hair

0:11:580:12:03

to cover up some more of my bald patches.

0:12:030:12:07

And I'll be happy because I'm going to be having more hair...

0:12:070:12:11

and I want more hair because then I can feel more like everybody else.

0:12:110:12:19

Down in Worthing, 14-year-old Stefanie

0:12:190:12:22

is having exactly the same surgery as me to give her more hair.

0:12:220:12:26

I'm Stephanie. I'm 14 years old.

0:12:260:12:28

I'm in Year 10 and in my spare time, I like to play pool with my dad.

0:12:280:12:32

I was burnt on my arms, my face and part of my back.

0:12:360:12:41

A fire broke out in our house and I was trapped

0:12:430:12:47

and there was no way of me getting out.

0:12:470:12:50

And then I remember my neighbour rescuing me with my dad.

0:12:500:12:55

And I was wrapped in a blanket and then taken to hospital.

0:12:550:12:58

And I was really ill and couldn't breathe on my own,

0:12:580:13:02

so I had to have a ventilator.

0:13:020:13:04

And I had a priest come in to say goodbye to me

0:13:040:13:07

and welcome me to heaven.

0:13:070:13:10

Like me, Stephanie was a fighter and slowly got better.

0:13:100:13:14

I spent ten weeks in hospital and had several skin grafts.

0:13:140:13:18

We had to take the skin from my legs

0:13:180:13:20

and put it onto my arms and back.

0:13:200:13:22

But also like me, she's been bullied just because she looks different.

0:13:220:13:27

People are mean because of the way I look, and they stare at me

0:13:270:13:32

and they think that I'm some monster or something.

0:13:320:13:36

Since Stephanie was a toddler,

0:13:360:13:38

she's had loads of operations to help her scars,

0:13:380:13:42

including three to give her more hair

0:13:420:13:45

using something called a tissue expander.

0:13:450:13:48

The tissue expander is like a balloon.

0:13:480:13:51

It's put under the skin on our head which is already hairy.

0:13:510:13:57

The doctors fill the tissue expander

0:13:570:13:59

with sterile water over a couple of months

0:13:590:14:02

to stretch it until it gets really, really, really big,

0:14:020:14:05

so there is more skin with hair on it.

0:14:050:14:08

When it's as big as it can be, the doctors empty the balloon

0:14:080:14:12

and then stretch the new hairy skin across some of our bald patches

0:14:120:14:16

giving us more hair.

0:14:160:14:18

Stephanie's first tissue expander operation

0:14:180:14:21

was when she was six years old.

0:14:210:14:24

Wow! See, I said our heads get really big.

0:14:240:14:27

The second was when she was nine.

0:14:270:14:30

Stephanie has just had another operation, and this time

0:14:300:14:34

her surgeon has put three tissue expanders under her skin.

0:14:340:14:38

My tissue expanders are there, there and over there.

0:14:380:14:41

And they're going to get very big, so it should be, like, out here.

0:14:410:14:45

So they're going to pull all my good hair forward to the front

0:14:450:14:48

and it might give me a fringe.

0:14:480:14:51

While Stephanie's balloons are getting bigger and bigger,

0:14:520:14:56

I am bracing myself for my very own tissue expander operation.

0:14:560:15:00

Like Stephanie, I've had tissue expanders before.

0:15:000:15:04

I had my first one when I was four years old,

0:15:040:15:07

and I had another two during primary school.

0:15:070:15:11

Before I had a tissue expander,

0:15:110:15:13

my hair was just a little strip through the middle and then down.

0:15:130:15:20

I had one here...

0:15:200:15:23

and it's full of hair now.

0:15:230:15:25

And now they're putting one here so it covers this side.

0:15:250:15:29

I'd like to have lots of hair and not just little bits.

0:15:290:15:33

This will be my fourth tissue expander operation.

0:15:340:15:38

And this time they're putting in two balloons.

0:15:380:15:42

There is a downside, though. Burnt skin is delicate,

0:15:420:15:45

so when my tissue expanders are in, I have to be very careful.

0:15:450:15:49

And I'm not a fan of being careful.

0:15:490:15:52

You know when you have your balloon put in next week,

0:15:520:15:55

you won't be able to do that, go jumping off swings.

0:15:550:15:59

-Yeah.

-Don't you?

-Yeah.

-And you have to be very careful with it.

0:15:590:16:03

-So, hopefully, you'll get a lot more hair.

-Yep!

0:16:030:16:07

-What do you think?

-Yeah...

0:16:070:16:11

Lots.

0:16:110:16:13

It's operation day. I have to get up really early.

0:16:230:16:27

So early, even the sun isn't up yet.

0:16:270:16:29

Holly, come on. Time to get up. We've got the hospital this morning.

0:16:290:16:34

-Come on.

-It's still dark.

0:16:340:16:37

Holly?

0:16:440:16:46

It's good to have the operation, because I'll have more hair.

0:16:480:16:52

And it's bad because...it hurts at first.

0:16:520:16:56

OK. So what you having done today, Holly?

0:16:590:17:01

-A tissue expander.

-How did you burn yourself?

0:17:010:17:04

-A chip pan fell on me.

-When was that?

0:17:040:17:08

-When I was 20 months old.

-I bet that hurt. Can you remember?

0:17:080:17:14

No, not really. Have you had lots of operations? Yeah.

0:17:140:17:17

All ready to go. Yes!

0:17:210:17:24

This is Dr Shah. She's been my surgeon since the accident,

0:17:240:17:28

and she'll be putting the two tissue expanders under my skin.

0:17:280:17:31

I'm going to expand this bit here.

0:17:310:17:34

I'm going to try and put one in here and one on that side.

0:17:340:17:38

They have to do my hair like this so it doesn't get in the way.

0:17:400:17:44

I don't think this style will be catching on, do you?

0:17:440:17:48

My hair's horrible.

0:17:480:17:49

Ouch!

0:17:490:17:52

I'm ready to go to theatre now.

0:17:540:17:56

I've never watched myself sleeping before.

0:18:000:18:03

Dr Shah draws on my head

0:18:030:18:05

so she knows exactly where she's going to put my balloons...

0:18:050:18:09

and then cuts the holes in my skin to squeeze them under.

0:18:090:18:12

I can't feel a thing.

0:18:120:18:15

All I have to do is sleep while Dr Shah works away,

0:18:150:18:18

but operation day is always stressful for my mum.

0:18:180:18:21

Holly is still in theatre.

0:18:210:18:23

I know they look after her and she's in safe hands,

0:18:230:18:26

but I'm still really, really nervous when she's down there.

0:18:260:18:30

Back in theatre, it's time for the tissue expanders.

0:18:300:18:34

Just a valve and that's the tissue expander and a connecting tube.

0:18:340:18:39

What we'll be doing is removing the air from the tissue expander.

0:18:390:18:43

Once all the air had been squeezed out, Dr Shah tests my balloons

0:18:430:18:47

to make sure they work by filling them up with sterile water.

0:18:470:18:51

My balloons have passed the test, so it's time to put them under my skin.

0:18:510:18:57

In goes one, sewn in snug.

0:18:570:18:59

Then another.

0:19:010:19:03

Another quick test... and we're done.

0:19:030:19:06

-Hi, there.

-Hello.

0:19:080:19:10

-Everything's gone OK.

-OK.

0:19:100:19:12

I'll see her in the morning and she'll go home.

0:19:120:19:14

-See you later.

-Bye.

0:19:140:19:16

I am now very relieved to know that it all went well

0:19:160:19:20

and she's in Recovery. I'm good now.

0:19:200:19:23

I've just woken up and I don't feel very well,

0:19:230:19:26

but I'm so glad to see my mum.

0:19:260:19:29

Now I'm back home, I'm feeling much better even if I don't look it.

0:19:290:19:34

Moving the skin at the top of my head to put the tissue expanders in

0:19:340:19:39

has made my eyes all puffy.

0:19:390:19:40

When I first came out of the operation I felt sick,

0:19:400:19:44

but now I feel better.

0:19:440:19:46

While MY balloons are settling in,

0:19:460:19:48

Stephanie's may have to come out early.

0:19:480:19:51

Yesterday, I found out that one of my tissue expanders

0:19:510:19:55

was trying to push through my skin

0:19:550:19:57

and I may have to have an operation today, which I'm really scared about.

0:19:570:20:02

That afternoon,

0:20:030:20:05

Stephanie had to have all three of her balloons removed.

0:20:050:20:09

The problem is our burnt skin is so fragile.

0:20:090:20:13

When I was told I had to have my tissue expanders out,

0:20:130:20:16

I was really upset cos I thought my whole operation was ruined

0:20:160:20:20

and I started to cry.

0:20:200:20:22

I wanted to be like everyone else,

0:20:220:20:24

have different hairstyles and wear my hair up without looking bald.

0:20:240:20:29

But after the operation, it didn't all go bad,

0:20:290:20:32

I got some of my hair back and it's still growing back now.

0:20:320:20:37

Back in Manchester, it's time for me

0:20:370:20:40

to start having MY balloons blown up.

0:20:400:20:44

We're here so I can have my balloons filled.

0:20:440:20:48

-Then my balloons can grow and then I get more hair.

-How are you today?

0:20:480:20:52

It's important to have more hair because... I can do more hairstyles.

0:20:520:20:58

It will be good, as well, cos...

0:20:580:21:02

..people won't call me names.

0:21:050:21:06

But now there's a problem with MY tissue expanders.

0:21:090:21:12

The wound has just opened up a little bit

0:21:120:21:15

so we need to make sure that that heals properly

0:21:150:21:18

before we can expand it.

0:21:180:21:21

Urgh!

0:21:210:21:23

Can you see it? It looks horrible.

0:21:230:21:26

The two holes in my head don't hurt, but they need to heal.

0:21:260:21:30

So it's time for some dodgy-looking medicine. Looks like poo!

0:21:300:21:34

SHE LAUGHS

0:21:340:21:36

MONITOR BEEPS

0:21:400:21:42

A month later, one of my balloons has to be taken out.

0:21:420:21:46

My head felt wet, so we had to go to the A&E.

0:21:490:21:52

They saw that it was badly infected

0:21:520:21:55

and I had to get one of my balloons out.

0:21:550:21:59

Two weeks after having one of my tissue expanders removed,

0:21:590:22:03

Dr Shah is checking the remaining one.

0:22:030:22:06

And if you expand it too soon,

0:22:100:22:12

then the tissue expander will just break through.

0:22:120:22:15

It is slow, but in the end, you're going to get there.

0:22:150:22:18

And how do you feel about that?

0:22:180:22:20

-Good.

-Good.

0:22:200:22:22

It's not as fast as I thought it would be,

0:22:220:22:25

because when I had the one in last time, they done it really fast,

0:22:250:22:29

but they have to be careful in case they stretch the skin too much.

0:22:290:22:32

It looks like I won't be getting any more hair any time soon.

0:22:320:22:37

So although we've never met before,

0:22:370:22:40

I've come all the way to Worthing on the south coast with my mum

0:22:400:22:43

to talk to someone who understands exactly how I feel.

0:22:430:22:48

-Hiya.

-Hello. Nice to meet you. This is Stephanie.

-This is Holly.

0:22:480:22:52

Why is it important to you to have tissue expanders?

0:22:580:23:02

Because I'd like to have more hair.

0:23:020:23:05

When people called me names, I felt quite angry,

0:23:050:23:08

so if I had more hair, they can't call me any more names.

0:23:080:23:12

People have called me the Girl With Cancer, Baldy.

0:23:120:23:16

I've been called Witch and Monster.

0:23:160:23:19

And once, one of my... she WAS my friend,

0:23:190:23:21

she called me Voldomort from Harry Potter.

0:23:210:23:24

How do you cope when people call you names?

0:23:240:23:27

I just let them call me names because I think they're stupid.

0:23:270:23:31

Why do you feel it's OK not to wear a headband?

0:23:310:23:35

I used to wear hats when I was much younger,

0:23:350:23:37

but I took them off after a while. I didn't think it was any different.

0:23:370:23:41

People treat us like we're different, but we're not, are we?

0:23:410:23:45

I don't think we're any different to anyone else.

0:23:450:23:48

We just look a bit different and that's about it.

0:23:480:23:52

BOTH LAUGH

0:23:530:23:55

Stephanie was inspiring,

0:23:590:24:01

because even though she was badly burnt on her head,

0:24:010:24:04

she still goes out in public without a headband or anything

0:24:040:24:09

to cover her head up.

0:24:090:24:10

That made me think that she was brave.

0:24:100:24:12

Even when we come to a busy place like this bowling alley,

0:24:130:24:18

Stephanie doesn't cover her scars.

0:24:180:24:21

And she still has loads of fun.

0:24:240:24:26

Yes!

0:24:260:24:27

After the chat we had yesterday,

0:24:310:24:34

I think, sometimes, I'll take my headband off.

0:24:340:24:37

I think you should. You should be proud of who you are.

0:24:370:24:42

This weekend, it was rally good talking to Holly about burns

0:24:420:24:46

and bullying, because I had someone to talk to

0:24:460:24:49

when I was younger, and I hope it really helped her.

0:24:490:24:51

When we're back in Manchester, we'll keep in touch with Stephanie,

0:24:510:24:55

because she's really strong and she doesn't let anybody put her down.

0:24:550:24:59

When I first started my tissue expander adventure,

0:24:590:25:03

having more hair seemed like the most important thing in the world,

0:25:030:25:07

but since meeting Stephanie,

0:25:070:25:09

I've learned not to let my bald patches hold me back.

0:25:090:25:12

Especially now I'm 13.

0:25:120:25:15

It's my birthday.

0:25:150:25:18

Today, I'm having a pamper party.

0:25:180:25:20

That's where you get you hair, make-up

0:25:200:25:23

and nails done, then you dress up.

0:25:230:25:25

HOOTER

0:25:250:25:27

Harry, Robert and Leeah from my own special burns club

0:25:270:25:31

are coming, and I'm hoping Stephanie will make it from the south coast.

0:25:310:25:36

You're gorgeous! Look at your eyelashes!

0:25:360:25:39

What do you think? Show your mum.

0:25:400:25:43

Surrounded by my friends and family, I think I'm finally ready

0:25:430:25:48

to take my headband off in public.

0:25:480:25:50

I got my hair and make-up done and it's really fun.

0:25:530:25:57

-Hooray! My new friend Stephanie's made it.

-Happy birthday.

0:26:020:26:05

-Are you having a nice day?

-Yeah.

0:26:050:26:08

-Your hair looks really nice.

-Thanks. How are you?

0:26:080:26:11

-I'm good, thank you.

-That's good.

0:26:110:26:13

-Stephanie?

-Yes.

-You're going to be next for make-up.

-OK.

0:26:130:26:15

Take your coat off and put it over there.

0:26:150:26:18

Meeting Stephanie made me realise it doesn't matter

0:26:180:26:22

what you look like, it only matters what you're like inside.

0:26:220:26:25

-Thank you.

-You're welcome.

0:26:250:26:27

It's really nice.

0:26:270:26:29

-Do you like it?

-Yeah.

0:26:320:26:33

I'm very proud of you today. You look absolutely beautiful.

0:26:350:26:40

-You're not a little girl, any more.

-No.

-No. Make your own decisions.

0:26:400:26:46

-I do anyway!

-I know you do!

0:26:460:26:48

ALL: Happy birthday, Holly!

0:26:480:26:51

It doesn't matter what you look like,

0:26:580:27:01

it just matters about your personality, that's who you are.

0:27:010:27:05

And it doesn't matter if I don't get hair as quickly as I thought,

0:27:050:27:09

because I'm proud of who I am and what I look like.
