I'm about to take part in the most important race of my life, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:24
but I'm facing an extra challenge. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
I have a lung disease called cystic fibrosis. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
I'm Cerys, and I love music. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
I'm preparing for the most important exam of my life. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
I have cystic fibrosis too... | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
-And breathe out. -SHE EXHALES | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
..and have my own big challenge - | 0:00:40 | 0:00:41
to take more responsibility for my medications. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:45
It's hard for us to do the things that other kids do. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
-We have loads of treatments. -SHE EXHALES | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
We sometimes spend weeks in hospital. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53

But we are determined not to let cystic fibrosis get in our way. | 0:00:56 | 0:01:00

This is my family - | 0:01:10 | 0:01:11
my mum, brother and dad. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
He's a runner too. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
I love running because there's always something to aim for - | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
to get a new PB or to try and win a race. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE I've joined a running club. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
We've been training really hard. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
In the summer, we do track and 1,500m, 800m, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
and, in the winter, we do seriously muddy cross-country, which is great. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:35
This is my room and these are my trophies, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
and I think this is the one that I'm most proud of | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
cos it's from the Brighton Mini Mile two years ago, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
which was then. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
I wasn't expecting to win it. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
I had never done any running before, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
and then I won and I was, like, flabbergasted, | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
and so, the next year, I entered it again, but I was a year older, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
and therefore in a higher age group, | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
and came second, which I was really proud of. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
This race inspired me to become a runner | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
and it's my last year at under-13. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07

This is the race I really want to win more than any other race. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
Obviously, because of my cystic fibrosis | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
I have lots obstacles to overcome, but I always carry on with training | 0:02:18 | 0:02:22
because I just don't want it to control my life. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
I just want to forget about it and move on. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
And...action! | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
I'm Cerys and I love music. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
Come on, now, go to bed. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
This is my mum... | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
A coiled spring! | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
..and this is my dad. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
I play three instruments - | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
the tenor horn, the piano and the trombone - | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
and these are my music certificates. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
Quite a lot of work has gone into all of these. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
I've been playing music | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
since I was tiny | 0:02:50 | 0:02:51
but I've got some big challenges ahead. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
I've got my Grade Five trombone exam coming up. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:57
Having CF, it's kind of like an extra obstacle for me to pass | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
because sometimes I can get out of breath quicker | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
playing my instruments than other people would, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
especially if I'm not healthy and I'm not well. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
On top of that, I've got a concert to prepare for, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
and there's an added pressure. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
On the concert day, I'll have to take quite a lot of medication, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
and this is the very first time I'll be doing all of it on my own. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
I have done bits of it before, but not for the whole day. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
I kind of know what to do - | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
it's just that responsibility, as well. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
So, as I prepare for the exam and concert... | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
..and I get ready for my race, | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
we can never escape our cystic fibrosis. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39

We were born with this lung disease. You can't catch it. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
People with Cystic Fibrosis - CF - look like everybody else, | 0:03:44 | 0:03:48
even though we have a very serious condition. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
It causes our bodies to create thick mucus in our lungs. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
This can make it hard for us to breathe. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:58
-HEAVY BREATHING -It can make us sick and tired | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
and sometimes we have to stay in hospital. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
There isn't a cure but there are lots of treatments we can do. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
These treatments keep us alive. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
If I'd, like, known what it was like without CF, | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
I'd probably feel a lot more, like, depressed all the time | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
but cos I, just, like... That's just how it is | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
and I don't really know what it's like not to have it, | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
it's just kind of, like, normal. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
I don't like having CF, but I can't let it beat me, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
and I want to life as normal a life as I can, as possible. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:36
'There are lots of things we have to do every single day | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
'to fight our cystic fibrosis, including using a nebulizer. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
'This machine turns my medicine into a mist | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
'which I breathe deep into my lungs. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
'It helps loosen the mucus that's stuck inside.' | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
It's quite boring and repetitive. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
'And that's just the start of it! Next, I do physio. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
'This is a series of lung exercises that shakes up the mucus inside, | 0:05:03 | 0:05:07
'and no, my mum's not hitting me - | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
'she's helping stop the mucus from settling and getting infected.' | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
Higher, higher. Good girl. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
'By the time I've got to school, | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
'I've already done an hour and a half's worth of CF-related things.' | 0:05:17 | 0:05:22
It wastes time and you can't, like, just be, like, | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
free like everyone else. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
I'm really happy because I've done my two sessions of physio | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
so I won't have to do any more for today. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:34
-Apart from this. -SHE SCREAMS | 0:05:34 | 0:05:36
I use nebulizers too, but my physio is a little bit different. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:42
Well, this is my physio vest... MACHINE RUMBLES | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
..and, basically, it shakes a lot and it's really loud, | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
erm, so, erm... HER VOICE VIBRATES | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
..and it, basically, just, like.. getting up all the mucus | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
and stopping it from settling right at the bottom of my lungs. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
It's really weird, and if I have it after I've eaten, | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
it makes me feel a bit sick, obviously. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
I have to do it twice a day, normally for about 25 minutes. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
It kind of, erm, aches, | 0:06:03 | 0:06:06
and it makes your back a bit achy and stuff after a while. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:09
I have to do some treatment before school | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
and then some after school, and it means I have to get up quite early. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:16
It's quite hard to fit around homework and things. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
We depend on a lot of other medicines too. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
And this is my medicine cupboard. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
# Yeah-eah-eah-eah Yo... # | 0:06:25 | 0:06:27
This is my Salbutamol inhaler. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
This one's my Creon tablets. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
This is Gaviscon... | 0:06:32 | 0:06:33
These are my Azithromycin tablets. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
-..my Movicol... -Salt tablets. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
..antibiotics... | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
Omeprazole tablets. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:40
..and this is my Montelukast... | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
Vitamin E tablets. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:43
..and this is my other antibiotics. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
Vitamin A and D capsules. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:48
This is my Domperidome... | 0:06:48 | 0:06:49
That goes in the nebulizer. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:52
..and this is probably the biggest pill I have to take, | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
and it absolutely stinks. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:56
The one I dislike the most is this one, which is my salt neb. | 0:06:56 | 0:07:01
It makes me gag and cough a lot whilst I'm having my physio, | 0:07:01 | 0:07:05
so I don't really like that. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
That's about 2,700 pills a month between both of us. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
Playing my brass instruments is like a treatment for my CF as well | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
because when I blow into the instruments, | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
it can help with my lungs and help it get any yuck off my chest, | 0:07:23 | 0:07:27
a bit like physio. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:28
I still need to do the physio treatment, just to make sure, | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
but the brass does help a lot. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
I love brass anyway. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:35
I still think I'd still play it if I didn't have CF. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
It's kind of lucky that playing brass instruments does help as well. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
'My best friend Evie is in my orchestra too. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
'She knows all about my cystic fibrosis | 0:07:46 | 0:07:48
'and how I want to do my own treatments on concert day.' | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
It's, like, a really big step | 0:07:52 | 0:07:53
because I'll have to take my nebulizer | 0:07:53 | 0:07:55
for the first time on my own. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
Would you come and help me with that? | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
Yeah, sure, I'll always be there for you when you need. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
As a friend, I need to know, like, correctly, | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
what I need to do with you, because I don't want to go wrong. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
Erm, well, I've learnt how to put my nebulizer together | 0:08:08 | 0:08:12
and do all the medicine and things, | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
but it would be really nice if you could just supervise me | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
-and make sure I don't feel lonely and just chat to me. -Yeah. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
OK, I'll just make sure that you don't feel nervous | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
about doing it on your own. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
OK, thanks. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:26
I haven't really told anybody at my running club about CF. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
I didn't really tell them | 0:08:33 | 0:08:34
because I just didn't want to make a big thing about it | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
and I just didn't really want to be, like, different from everybody else. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:40
'But, as my big race approaches, I've decided it's time to | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
'tell my friend and running partner, Betty, | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
'so we're heading out for a pizza.' | 0:08:47 | 0:08:49
Yeah, they've got better players but... | 0:08:50 | 0:08:52
'OK, I've got to spit it out.' | 0:08:52 | 0:08:54
-..there's something about the way they play. -'Here goes nothing.' | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
-I have a chest condition called cystic fibrosis... -Oh. | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
..and, if I get a cough or something, | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
it can get really bad really quickly. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
Then, sometimes, I have to go into hospital to get... | 0:09:05 | 0:09:07
To have, like, more... Erm, like... | 0:09:07 | 0:09:09
-Attention and, just, yeah... -Yeah, like more antibiotics and things. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:13
How did you get the condition? Were you just born with it? | 0:09:13 | 0:09:16
Yeah, it's genetic, | 0:09:16 | 0:09:18
so, like, if one of my parents has one of the genes... | 0:09:18 | 0:09:20
-Oh. -..and then my other... | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
and then my other parent also has it, then it's quite likely that... | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
-You'll... OK. -Yeah. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
'I was really, really nervous before I told Betty about CF, but' | 0:09:27 | 0:09:31
I think it went well. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:32
I like the way she, kind of, didn't make a big deal about it. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
Like, she was curious, but it wasn't like a huge thing. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
'It feels good to have told Betty about my condition, | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
'but the one thing I'd love to do, but can't, | 0:09:42 | 0:09:44
'is sit and chat with someone who actually has CF - | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
'someone who knows what it's really like.' | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
It's not a good idea for two people with CF to meet | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
because there's a risk of cross-infection. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
This means we might pass bugs to each other, | 0:09:56 | 0:09:58
which could make us ill, | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
so, no matter how much we want to meet... | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
..cystic fibrosis will always get in the way. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:05
'But Cerys and I have found a solution - | 0:10:06 | 0:10:09
'we'll chat through our computers!' COMPUTER BEEPS | 0:10:09 | 0:10:11
Here we go! | 0:10:11 | 0:10:13
Hello. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:14
Hi. How are you? | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
I'm good. How about you? | 0:10:16 | 0:10:18
Yeah, cool. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:19
'It's great to speak to someone dealing with the stuff as me.' | 0:10:19 | 0:10:23
Do you have to go into, erm, hospital that much? | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
Erm, well, the last time was about a year ago, | 0:10:26 | 0:10:30
a year and a bit ago. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
How about you? | 0:10:32 | 0:10:33
Erm, well, I went in just before Christmas. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:36
Were you in hospital over Christmas, then? | 0:10:36 | 0:10:39
Erm, no, it was just before, luckily, | 0:10:39 | 0:10:41
so I got back from hospital | 0:10:41 | 0:10:42
just to have the last two weeks of school | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
before Christmas holidays. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:45
Do you find it hard to go on sleepovers and stuff | 0:10:45 | 0:10:48
and, like, fitting it around, like, treatments? | 0:10:48 | 0:10:50
Yeah, last time I went on a sleepover, | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
I had to do physio, | 0:10:53 | 0:10:55
and all my friends wanted to know, | 0:10:55 | 0:10:57
like, what it was and why I was doing it | 0:10:57 | 0:11:01
and yeah, it's quite hard to fit it in. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
Does CF make you, like, determined to do better? | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
I think so, yeah. What about you? | 0:11:07 | 0:11:08
Do you think that as well? | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
Yeah, like, cystic fibrosis isn't going to beat me. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:12
'After speaking with Cerys, I feel more determined than ever.' | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
Are you ready to go, Dad? | 0:11:19 | 0:11:20
Yeah, I'm ready. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:21
'Dad is helping me prepare for my big Brighton race. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
'In one way, cystic fibrosis really motivates me to go running - | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
'it's just such great treatment for my chest.' | 0:11:35 | 0:11:39

I'll time you, and then we'll do it again and again and again, | 0:11:43 | 0:11:47

-BELL RINGS -Hello, Mrs Williams, is it possible | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
you can send Cerys down, please? | 0:13:02 | 0:13:04
She's got a hospital appointment this morning. Thank you. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:07
'Today, I've got to leave school and go to the hospital for clinic. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:11
'Every eight weeks, I meet with my team of doctors | 0:13:11 | 0:13:13

How are you feeling about the clinic, today, Cerys? | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
Erm, I'm feeling that I don't want to go. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
I'll probably get bored. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:24

So what have you got coming up? | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
Erm, I've got my Grade Five trombone coming up. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
-Trombone? -I thought you were doing the tenor... -Horn. -..horn. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
-Yeah. -And now you're doing the trombone as well? -Yeah. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:44

-do you think, all that blowing? -Yeah. -Yeah? | 0:13:46 | 0:13:48
'A crucial part of my checkup is the lung function test.' | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51

'and this could mean a stay in hospital for two weeks, | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
'so I'm hoping for a high score.' | 0:14:02 | 0:14:04
Brilliant. Your lung function is excellent. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:07
-99% predicted so... -Oh, yay. | 0:14:07 | 0:14:09
-Well done, Cerys. -..really, really, really excellent lung function. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:12

-That's the most you've ever done. -Excellent. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:17
-It is the biggest. -It's the best ever. All right. -Bye. -Take care. | 0:14:17 | 0:14:21

I've still got to remember all my Creon with my lunch | 0:18:06 | 0:18:08
