MUSIC: Lose Yourself by Eminem

0:00:160:00:18

I'm Grace, and I love running.

0:00:180:00:20

I'm about to take part in the most important race of my life,

0:00:200:00:24

but I'm facing an extra challenge.

0:00:240:00:27

I have a lung disease called cystic fibrosis.

0:00:270:00:29

I'm Cerys, and I love music.

0:00:310:00:33

I'm preparing for the most important exam of my life.

0:00:330:00:36

I have cystic fibrosis too...

0:00:360:00:38

-And breathe out.

-SHE EXHALES

0:00:380:00:40

..and have my own big challenge -

0:00:400:00:41

to take more responsibility for my medications.

0:00:410:00:45

It's hard for us to do the things that other kids do.

0:00:450:00:48

-We have loads of treatments.

-SHE EXHALES

0:00:480:00:50

We sometimes spend weeks in hospital.

0:00:500:00:53

And we take mountains of medicine.

0:00:530:00:56

But we are determined not to let cystic fibrosis get in our way.

0:00:560:01:00

-BOTH:

-So, to prepare for the challenge of our lives...

0:01:000:01:03

Come on, Grace, really give it everything!

0:01:030:01:05

..we take a deep breath.

0:01:050:01:07

MUSIC: Roar by Katy Perry

0:01:070:01:10

This is my family -

0:01:100:01:11

my mum, brother and dad.

0:01:110:01:14

He's a runner too.

0:01:140:01:16

I love running because there's always something to aim for -

0:01:160:01:19

to get a new PB or to try and win a race.

0:01:190:01:21

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE I've joined a running club.

0:01:210:01:24

We've been training really hard.

0:01:240:01:26

In the summer, we do track and 1,500m, 800m,

0:01:260:01:30

and, in the winter, we do seriously muddy cross-country, which is great.

0:01:300:01:35

This is my room and these are my trophies,

0:01:350:01:38

and I think this is the one that I'm most proud of

0:01:380:01:41

cos it's from the Brighton Mini Mile two years ago,

0:01:410:01:45

which was then.

0:01:450:01:47

I wasn't expecting to win it.

0:01:470:01:48

I had never done any running before,

0:01:480:01:50

and then I won and I was, like, flabbergasted,

0:01:500:01:53

and so, the next year, I entered it again, but I was a year older,

0:01:530:01:57

and therefore in a higher age group,

0:01:570:01:59

and came second, which I was really proud of.

0:01:590:02:02

This race inspired me to become a runner

0:02:020:02:04

and it's my last year at under-13.

0:02:040:02:07

I've got a lot to prove to myself.

0:02:070:02:09

MUSIC: Fight Song by Rachel Platten

0:02:090:02:11

This is the race I really want to win more than any other race.

0:02:110:02:15

Obviously, because of my cystic fibrosis

0:02:150:02:18

I have lots obstacles to overcome, but I always carry on with training

0:02:180:02:22

because I just don't want it to control my life.

0:02:220:02:24

I just want to forget about it and move on.

0:02:240:02:26

And...action!

0:02:260:02:29

I'm Cerys and I love music.

0:02:290:02:31

Come on, now, go to bed.

0:02:310:02:33

This is my mum...

0:02:330:02:34

A coiled spring!

0:02:340:02:35

..and this is my dad.

0:02:350:02:37

I play three instruments -

0:02:370:02:39

the tenor horn, the piano and the trombone -

0:02:390:02:42

and these are my music certificates.

0:02:420:02:45

Quite a lot of work has gone into all of these.

0:02:450:02:48

I've been playing music

0:02:480:02:50

since I was tiny

0:02:500:02:51

but I've got some big challenges ahead.

0:02:510:02:53

I've got my Grade Five trombone exam coming up.

0:02:530:02:57

Having CF, it's kind of like an extra obstacle for me to pass

0:02:570:03:00

because sometimes I can get out of breath quicker

0:03:000:03:04

playing my instruments than other people would,

0:03:040:03:06

especially if I'm not healthy and I'm not well.

0:03:060:03:10

On top of that, I've got a concert to prepare for,

0:03:100:03:13

and there's an added pressure.

0:03:130:03:15

On the concert day, I'll have to take quite a lot of medication,

0:03:150:03:18

and this is the very first time I'll be doing all of it on my own.

0:03:180:03:22

I have done bits of it before, but not for the whole day.

0:03:220:03:26

I kind of know what to do -

0:03:260:03:28

it's just that responsibility, as well.

0:03:280:03:32

So, as I prepare for the exam and concert...

0:03:320:03:35

..and I get ready for my race,

0:03:350:03:37

we can never escape our cystic fibrosis.

0:03:370:03:39

MUSIC: Pompeii by Bastille

0:03:390:03:41

We were born with this lung disease. You can't catch it.

0:03:410:03:44

People with Cystic Fibrosis - CF - look like everybody else,

0:03:440:03:48

even though we have a very serious condition.

0:03:480:03:51

It causes our bodies to create thick mucus in our lungs.

0:03:510:03:55

This can make it hard for us to breathe.

0:03:560:03:58

-HEAVY BREATHING

-It can make us sick and tired

0:03:580:04:01

and sometimes we have to stay in hospital.

0:04:010:04:04

There isn't a cure but there are lots of treatments we can do.

0:04:040:04:08

These treatments keep us alive.

0:04:080:04:10

If I'd, like, known what it was like without CF,

0:04:120:04:16

I'd probably feel a lot more, like, depressed all the time

0:04:160:04:19

but cos I, just, like... That's just how it is

0:04:190:04:22

and I don't really know what it's like not to have it,

0:04:220:04:25

it's just kind of, like, normal.

0:04:250:04:28

I don't like having CF, but I can't let it beat me,

0:04:280:04:31

and I want to life as normal a life as I can, as possible.

0:04:310:04:36

'There are lots of things we have to do every single day

0:04:370:04:40

'to fight our cystic fibrosis, including using a nebulizer.

0:04:400:04:44

'This machine turns my medicine into a mist

0:04:450:04:48

'which I breathe deep into my lungs.

0:04:480:04:51

'It helps loosen the mucus that's stuck inside.'

0:04:510:04:53

It's quite boring and repetitive.

0:04:550:04:58

'And that's just the start of it! Next, I do physio.

0:04:580:05:01

'This is a series of lung exercises that shakes up the mucus inside,

0:05:030:05:07

'and no, my mum's not hitting me -

0:05:070:05:10

'she's helping stop the mucus from settling and getting infected.'

0:05:100:05:13

Higher, higher. Good girl.

0:05:130:05:15

'By the time I've got to school,

0:05:150:05:17

'I've already done an hour and a half's worth of CF-related things.'

0:05:170:05:22

It wastes time and you can't, like, just be, like,

0:05:220:05:26

free like everyone else.

0:05:260:05:28

I'm really happy because I've done my two sessions of physio

0:05:280:05:32

so I won't have to do any more for today.

0:05:320:05:34

-Apart from this.

-SHE SCREAMS

0:05:340:05:36

I use nebulizers too, but my physio is a little bit different.

0:05:360:05:42

Well, this is my physio vest... MACHINE RUMBLES

0:05:420:05:45

..and, basically, it shakes a lot and it's really loud,

0:05:450:05:47

erm, so, erm... HER VOICE VIBRATES

0:05:470:05:49

..and it, basically, just, like.. getting up all the mucus

0:05:490:05:52

and stopping it from settling right at the bottom of my lungs.

0:05:520:05:55

It's really weird, and if I have it after I've eaten,

0:05:550:05:58

it makes me feel a bit sick, obviously.

0:05:580:06:00

I have to do it twice a day, normally for about 25 minutes.

0:06:000:06:03

It kind of, erm, aches,

0:06:030:06:06

and it makes your back a bit achy and stuff after a while.

0:06:060:06:09

I have to do some treatment before school

0:06:090:06:12

and then some after school, and it means I have to get up quite early.

0:06:120:06:16

It's quite hard to fit around homework and things.

0:06:160:06:19

We depend on a lot of other medicines too.

0:06:190:06:22

And this is my medicine cupboard.

0:06:220:06:25

# Yeah-eah-eah-eah Yo... #

0:06:250:06:27

This is my Salbutamol inhaler.

0:06:270:06:30

This one's my Creon tablets.

0:06:300:06:32

This is Gaviscon...

0:06:320:06:33

These are my Azithromycin tablets.

0:06:330:06:35

-..my Movicol...

-Salt tablets.

0:06:350:06:37

..antibiotics...

0:06:370:06:39

Omeprazole tablets.

0:06:390:06:40

..and this is my Montelukast...

0:06:400:06:42

Vitamin E tablets.

0:06:420:06:43

..and this is my other antibiotics.

0:06:430:06:46

Vitamin A and D capsules.

0:06:460:06:48

This is my Domperidome...

0:06:480:06:49

That goes in the nebulizer.

0:06:490:06:52

..and this is probably the biggest pill I have to take,

0:06:520:06:54

and it absolutely stinks.

0:06:540:06:56

The one I dislike the most is this one, which is my salt neb.

0:06:560:07:01

It makes me gag and cough a lot whilst I'm having my physio,

0:07:010:07:05

so I don't really like that.

0:07:050:07:07

That's about 2,700 pills a month between both of us.

0:07:070:07:11

Playing my brass instruments is like a treatment for my CF as well

0:07:160:07:20

because when I blow into the instruments,

0:07:200:07:23

it can help with my lungs and help it get any yuck off my chest,

0:07:230:07:27

a bit like physio.

0:07:270:07:28

I still need to do the physio treatment, just to make sure,

0:07:280:07:31

but the brass does help a lot.

0:07:310:07:34

I love brass anyway.

0:07:340:07:35

I still think I'd still play it if I didn't have CF.

0:07:350:07:38

It's kind of lucky that playing brass instruments does help as well.

0:07:380:07:41

'My best friend Evie is in my orchestra too.

0:07:430:07:46

'She knows all about my cystic fibrosis

0:07:460:07:48

'and how I want to do my own treatments on concert day.'

0:07:480:07:52

It's, like, a really big step

0:07:520:07:53

because I'll have to take my nebulizer

0:07:530:07:55

for the first time on my own.

0:07:550:07:57

Would you come and help me with that?

0:07:570:07:59

Yeah, sure, I'll always be there for you when you need.

0:07:590:08:02

As a friend, I need to know, like, correctly,

0:08:020:08:05

what I need to do with you, because I don't want to go wrong.

0:08:050:08:08

Erm, well, I've learnt how to put my nebulizer together

0:08:080:08:12

and do all the medicine and things,

0:08:120:08:14

but it would be really nice if you could just supervise me

0:08:140:08:17

-and make sure I don't feel lonely and just chat to me.

-Yeah.

0:08:170:08:21

OK, I'll just make sure that you don't feel nervous

0:08:210:08:23

about doing it on your own.

0:08:230:08:25

OK, thanks.

0:08:250:08:26

I haven't really told anybody at my running club about CF.

0:08:290:08:33

I didn't really tell them

0:08:330:08:34

because I just didn't want to make a big thing about it

0:08:340:08:36

and I just didn't really want to be, like, different from everybody else.

0:08:360:08:40

'But, as my big race approaches, I've decided it's time to

0:08:410:08:44

'tell my friend and running partner, Betty,

0:08:440:08:47

'so we're heading out for a pizza.'

0:08:470:08:49

Yeah, they've got better players but...

0:08:500:08:52

'OK, I've got to spit it out.'

0:08:520:08:54

-..there's something about the way they play.

-'Here goes nothing.'

0:08:540:08:57

-I have a chest condition called cystic fibrosis...

-Oh.

0:08:570:09:01

..and, if I get a cough or something,

0:09:010:09:03

it can get really bad really quickly.

0:09:030:09:05

Then, sometimes, I have to go into hospital to get...

0:09:050:09:07

To have, like, more... Erm, like...

0:09:070:09:09

-Attention and, just, yeah...

-Yeah, like more antibiotics and things.

0:09:090:09:13

How did you get the condition? Were you just born with it?

0:09:130:09:16

Yeah, it's genetic,

0:09:160:09:18

so, like, if one of my parents has one of the genes...

0:09:180:09:20

-Oh.

-..and then my other...

0:09:200:09:22

and then my other parent also has it, then it's quite likely that...

0:09:220:09:25

-You'll... OK.

-Yeah.

0:09:250:09:27

'I was really, really nervous before I told Betty about CF, but'

0:09:270:09:31

I think it went well.

0:09:310:09:32

I like the way she, kind of, didn't make a big deal about it.

0:09:320:09:36

Like, she was curious, but it wasn't like a huge thing.

0:09:360:09:39

'It feels good to have told Betty about my condition,

0:09:390:09:42

'but the one thing I'd love to do, but can't,

0:09:420:09:44

'is sit and chat with someone who actually has CF -

0:09:440:09:47

'someone who knows what it's really like.'

0:09:470:09:50

It's not a good idea for two people with CF to meet

0:09:500:09:53

because there's a risk of cross-infection.

0:09:530:09:56

This means we might pass bugs to each other,

0:09:560:09:58

which could make us ill,

0:09:580:10:00

so, no matter how much we want to meet...

0:10:000:10:03

..cystic fibrosis will always get in the way.

0:10:030:10:05

'But Cerys and I have found a solution -

0:10:060:10:09

'we'll chat through our computers!' COMPUTER BEEPS

0:10:090:10:11

Here we go!

0:10:110:10:13

Hello.

0:10:130:10:14

Hi. How are you?

0:10:140:10:16

I'm good. How about you?

0:10:160:10:18

Yeah, cool.

0:10:180:10:19

'It's great to speak to someone dealing with the stuff as me.'

0:10:190:10:23

Do you have to go into, erm, hospital that much?

0:10:230:10:26

Erm, well, the last time was about a year ago,

0:10:260:10:30

a year and a bit ago.

0:10:300:10:32

How about you?

0:10:320:10:33

Erm, well, I went in just before Christmas.

0:10:330:10:36

Were you in hospital over Christmas, then?

0:10:360:10:39

Erm, no, it was just before, luckily,

0:10:390:10:41

so I got back from hospital

0:10:410:10:42

just to have the last two weeks of school

0:10:420:10:44

before Christmas holidays.

0:10:440:10:45

Do you find it hard to go on sleepovers and stuff

0:10:450:10:48

and, like, fitting it around, like, treatments?

0:10:480:10:50

Yeah, last time I went on a sleepover,

0:10:500:10:53

I had to do physio,

0:10:530:10:55

and all my friends wanted to know,

0:10:550:10:57

like, what it was and why I was doing it

0:10:570:11:01

and yeah, it's quite hard to fit it in.

0:11:010:11:03

Does CF make you, like, determined to do better?

0:11:030:11:07

I think so, yeah. What about you?

0:11:070:11:08

Do you think that as well?

0:11:080:11:10

Yeah, like, cystic fibrosis isn't going to beat me.

0:11:100:11:12

'After speaking with Cerys, I feel more determined than ever.'

0:11:140:11:17

Are you ready to go, Dad?

0:11:190:11:20

Yeah, I'm ready.

0:11:200:11:21

'Dad is helping me prepare for my big Brighton race.

0:11:250:11:28

'In one way, cystic fibrosis really motivates me to go running -

0:11:310:11:35

'it's just such great treatment for my chest.'

0:11:350:11:39

So, we'll down there, around there, up the steep hill,

0:11:390:11:43

I'll time you, and then we'll do it again and again and again,

0:11:430:11:47

and we've got to keep the same time all the way.

0:11:470:11:49

Go!

0:11:490:11:50

'When I'm running, especially in the longer distances,

0:11:500:11:53

'my CF sometimes makes my chest hurt a bit'

0:11:530:11:56

but, erm, I just try to make that motivate me to go faster.

0:11:560:11:59

Good, you're on target. Keep going.

0:11:590:12:01

'The faster I run, the sooner the pain will be over.'

0:12:010:12:04

Push it! Attack!

0:12:040:12:05

50, 1, 2...

0:12:050:12:07

Bang.

0:12:070:12:09

So, have a quick breather, now.

0:12:090:12:10

-How was it?

-It was cool.

0:12:100:12:12

-Chest?

-A bit tight but..

0:12:120:12:14

Bit tight.

0:12:140:12:15

-It always is.

-Yeah.

0:12:150:12:17

Go!

0:12:170:12:19

'Dad pushes me quite hard and helps me do my best...'

0:12:190:12:21

24, 25... On target.

0:12:210:12:23

Right, attack it!

0:12:230:12:25

'..but he's very competitive.'

0:12:250:12:27

She's already better than me at swimming -

0:12:270:12:29

she can smash me in the pool -

0:12:290:12:30

and there is no way, being a very competitive dad,

0:12:300:12:33

that I'm going to allow her to beat me on the track as well.

'But can he beat my 52 seconds?' Three, two, one, go.

0:12:360:12:39

'It's payback time!'

0:12:390:12:41

Come on, Dad. Go faster!

0:12:410:12:42

He's doing OK.

0:12:440:12:45

Faster, Dad. Come on, you're nearly there.

0:12:450:12:48

HE GRUNTS 54.

0:12:480:12:50

54.

0:12:500:12:51

54 seconds.

0:12:510:12:53

So you beat me?

0:12:530:12:54

Wow! That's amazing, Grace.

0:12:540:12:56

Rock on, Brighton. Here we come.

-BELL RINGS

-Hello, Mrs Williams, is it possible

0:13:000:13:02

you can send Cerys down, please?

0:13:020:13:04

She's got a hospital appointment this morning. Thank you.

0:13:040:13:07

'Today, I've got to leave school and go to the hospital for clinic.

0:13:070:13:11

'Every eight weeks, I meet with my team of doctors

0:13:110:13:13

'who check up on my CF and see how my lungs are doing.'

0:13:130:13:16

How are you feeling about the clinic, today, Cerys?

0:13:160:13:19

Erm, I'm feeling that I don't want to go.

0:13:190:13:22

I'll probably get bored.

0:13:220:13:24

'Most kids would like any excuse to get out of school,

0:13:250:13:28

'but I'd rather be anywhere than here.'

0:13:280:13:31

-So, how's the old music going? How's it going?

-Good.

0:13:310:13:34

So what have you got coming up?

0:13:340:13:36

Erm, I've got my Grade Five trombone coming up.

0:13:360:13:39

-Trombone?

-I thought you were doing the tenor...

-Horn.

-..horn.

0:13:390:13:42

-Yeah.

-And now you're doing the trombone as well?

-Yeah.

0:13:420:13:44

And do you think that it's helped with your chest,

0:13:440:13:46

-do you think, all that blowing?

-Yeah.

-Yeah?

0:13:460:13:48

'A crucial part of my checkup is the lung function test.'

0:13:480:13:51

-SHE EXHALES

-'That's when they measure

0:13:510:13:53

'how much of lungs I'm able to use.

0:13:530:13:56

'A low score could be a sign of infection,

0:13:560:13:59

'and this could mean a stay in hospital for two weeks,

0:13:590:14:02

'so I'm hoping for a high score.'

0:14:020:14:04

Brilliant. Your lung function is excellent.

0:14:040:14:07

-99% predicted so...

-Oh, yay.

0:14:070:14:09

-Well done, Cerys.

-..really, really, really excellent lung function.

0:14:090:14:12

All this brass instrument playing is really helping, isn't it?

0:14:120:14:15

-That's the most you've ever done.

-Excellent.

0:14:150:14:17

-It is the biggest.

-It's the best ever. All right.

-Bye.

-Take care.

0:14:170:14:21

-THEY LAUGH

-Bye.

0:14:210:14:24

I got the highest lung function I've ever had before in my life.

0:14:250:14:30

0:14:300:14:33

-Hello.

-THEY CHUCKLE

0:14:500:14:53

'Nearly busted.'

0:14:530:14:55

WHISTLE BLOWS 'I've been training hard

0:14:550:14:58

'in preparation for the Brighton race,

0:14:580:15:00

'but I've had a bit of a set-back.

0:15:000:15:03

'When I'm running, sometimes it hurts a little bit.'

0:15:030:15:05

It didn't use to but, recently, it kind of aches a bit,

0:15:050:15:10

and I feel a bit more short of breath than I did before.

0:15:100:15:14

Yesterday, I coughed up a bit of blood, as well,

0:15:140:15:18

so it will be useful to know what's causing that.

0:15:180:15:21

'The doctors are concerned and need to know what's going on,

0:15:220:15:25

'so I'm going to the hospital.

0:15:250:15:27

'I'm having a CT scan,

0:15:270:15:29

0:15:290:15:32

'The doctors can look at the images and see what's going on inside me.'

All right, that's everything.

0:15:400:15:42

'But I also need an operation.'

0:15:420:15:44

-Yeah, of course you are.

0:15:440:15:46

'I'm having a bronchoscopy -'

0:15:460:15:49

that's when they put a camera into my lungs to see what's there.

0:15:490:15:52

They'll even take a sample of mucus, to see if it's infected.

0:15:520:15:56

'Well, I feel very hungry,

0:15:580:16:00

It's quite a big responsibility and it can be a bit scary

0:17:030:17:08

0:17:220:17:26

'There is another child here with CF - Samuel.

0:17:260:17:29

'We need to avoid each other in these busy hallways.

0:17:290:17:32

'If we meet, we could make each other ill.

0:17:320:17:35

'We have to be really careful,

0:17:350:17:36

'and even plan to sit on different-coloured chairs

0:17:360:17:39

'so we don't pass germs to each other.

0:17:390:17:40

'And it's my turn to rehearse.

0:17:420:17:44

'I'm glad Evie's here.'

0:17:440:17:46

-Thanks for helping me with this.

-That's OK.

0:17:490:17:52

'I've got to stay focused on my treatments.

0:17:540:17:56

'They can take ages and it's really boring.'

0:17:560:17:59

That's just, like, one of the first things I've got to do.

0:18:030:18:06

I've still got to remember all my Creon with my lunch

0:18:060:18:08

and things like that.

0:18:080:18:10

What happens if you do forget?

0:18:100:18:12

Erm, I'll get really bad stomach pains if I forget to have them.

0:18:120:18:15

'I take pills with my food

0:18:150:18:18

'because cystic fibrosis affects my tummy as well as my lungs.

0:18:180:18:21

'I have to work out how many tablets to take

0:18:210:18:23

'depending on the amount of fat in what I'm eating.'

0:18:230:18:26

So, this is, like - I don't know - about 13g of fat,

0:18:260:18:30

so I need one Creon for every 5g and 13 is closer to 15 than 10.

0:18:300:18:36

'It's an important calculation.'

0:18:360:18:38

I think that the reason that you're really good at maths is

0:18:380:18:41

because you have to do maths every single day.

0:18:410:18:44

You have to take pills and you have to work it out using your brain.

0:18:440:18:49

Do the tablets taste of anything?

0:18:510:18:53

Some of the medicines I have, there's, like, no coating on them,

0:18:530:18:56

so I put them in my mouth and they taste disgusting.

0:18:560:18:59

How disgusting is it?

0:18:590:19:00

Oh...

0:19:000:19:02

Well, I know this sounds a bit weird but it tastes a bit like soap

0:19:020:19:05

in your mouth, and it's just really weird. Oh, it's horrible.

0:19:050:19:08

0:20:140:20:16

Erm, so tell me about the pain,

0:20:170:20:20

0:20:200:20:22

A little bit, yeah, and sometimes, after I go running,

0:20:220:20:25

my chest feels tighter and it does hurt more when I breathe in.

0:20:250:20:28

Your chest is structurally normal.

0:20:520:20:55

0:21:000:21:01

I don't think we're quite on top of exactly what's happening,

but I think there are interventions to make today

0:21:040:21:06
