0:00:430:00:47

-Tonight, we meet the three poets

-on the shortlist.

0:00:470:00:52

-There's a definite sign

-that Christmas is nearing...

-..as the Christmas stamps

-have been launched today.

0:00:560:01:00

-The bard, Tudur Dylan Jones

-is my studio guest.

0:01:000:01:03

-Welcome to the programme.

0:01:030:01:05

-Thank you.

0:01:050:01:07

-You're looking ahead to Christmas.

0:01:070:01:17

-The book will be a Christmas gift

-for many.

0:01:270:01:29

-I hope it will be a success.

0:01:290:01:31

-Let's start tonight's programme by

-joining Yvonne at Llanerch Vineyard.

0:01:310:01:36

-Good evening, Yvonne.

0:01:360:01:37

-Welcome to Llanerch Vineyard.

0:01:380:01:40

-I'm here for the Welsh Vineyard

-Association's Awards.

0:01:400:01:44

-This is the highlight of the wine

-industry in Wales.

0:01:440:01:48

-Earlier today, I spoke a few experts

-associated with the awards.

0:01:480:01:53

-The Welsh Vineyard Association's

-Annual Awards was founded in 2013.

0:02:020:02:07

-The awards offer a great opportunity

-to award great quality Welsh wines.

0:02:070:02:14

-There are five categories,

-Best White, Rose, Red, Sparkling...

0:02:150:02:20

-..and there will also be

-one overall winner.

0:02:200:02:24

-Over the last decade, the Welsh

-wine industry has increased by 70%.

0:02:240:02:29

-The vineyards create around

-100,000 bottles of wine every year.

0:02:290:02:34

-There are 50 bottles of wine

-from nine different vineyards here.

0:02:340:02:40

-We established the vineyard in 2009

-and our son, Jack is the boss.

0:02:400:02:46

-He's the expert and studied

-how to run a vineyard at university.

0:02:460:02:55

-We're delighted to be here and

-it would be great to win an award.

0:02:550:02:59

-We're from the Pant Du vineyard

-in the Nantlle Valley.

0:03:000:03:03

-We started planting in 2007

-and we're celebrating a decade.

0:03:030:03:07

-as we depend on the weather.

0:03:080:03:11

-This year, we've experienced

-bad weather in July and August.

0:03:120:03:15

-However, it now seems warmer.

0:03:150:03:20

-In 2006, we thought global warming

-would help to grow grapes...

0:03:200:03:26

-..and we've experienced

-a lot of that weather since 2014.

0:03:260:03:30

-The wind and rain we experience in

-the Nantlle Valley is an obstacle.

0:03:310:03:35

-Slowly, we're getting through it.

0:03:350:03:38

-What do these awards mean to

-the vineyards and to the industry?

0:03:380:03:43

-These awards are very important.

0:03:430:03:48

-In the past 20 years, the industry

-has developed as has the standard.

0:03:490:03:55

-Wales produces more wines.

0:03:550:03:58

-We've had 50 different wine entries

-and that's absolutely fantastic.

0:03:590:04:04

-The judges are

-internationally acclaimed...

0:04:040:04:09

-..and are bringing the standard

-to the Welsh wines.

0:04:090:04:12

-The award winners

-can count themselves lucky.

0:04:130:04:16

-Seeing the results so far, it's very

-promising and positive for the wine.

0:04:160:04:21

-Around 20 years ago, we couldn't put

-Welsh wines on our menus.

0:04:210:04:26

-These days, we have plenty of choice

-and the standard is incredibly high.

0:04:260:04:30

-It's important that we celebrate in

-a traditional way with the awards.

0:04:310:04:35

-The ceremony will be held

-in this room.

0:04:560:04:58

-I'm joined by one of the judges,

-Dylan Rowlands.

0:04:590:05:08

-How did it feel to be a judge?

0:05:080:05:12

-It was a great experience to sample

-50 different wines.

0:05:120:05:15

-The standard was very high.

0:05:150:05:25

-I've thoroughly enjoyed myself.

0:05:280:05:32

-Is there a winner for each category?

0:05:320:05:38

-Yes, there's a winner

-in every category.

0:05:390:05:43

-The overall winner

-is of a very high quality.

0:05:430:05:46

-It could compete with any wine

-in the world.

0:05:470:05:50

-The future is bright

-for Welsh vineyards.

0:05:500:05:54

-They have something different

-to offer.

0:05:540:05:58

-I look forward to seeing

-what the future holds.

0:05:580:06:03

-We'll reveal the winners

-on tomorrow's Heno.

0:06:030:06:07

-Until then, cheers.

0:06:070:06:08

-Back to you, Angharad.

0:06:130:06:16

-Thank you, Yvonne.

0:06:160:06:17

-It's time to welcome my studio

-guest, the bard, Tudur Dylan Jones.

0:06:170:06:21

-Welcome to the programme.

0:06:210:06:23

-Thank you.

0:06:240:06:30

-Tell us more about the book.

0:06:310:06:36

-I was asked by Sioned Lleinau

-from Gwasg Gomer...

0:06:360:06:42

-..to write a book about

-Father Christmas and Christmas.

0:06:420:06:48

-I thought about this story

-that involves three children.

0:06:480:06:54

-They are from Carmarthen.

0:06:540:06:59

-They're really looking forward

-to Father Christmas' visit.

0:06:590:07:09

-The images in the book

-are fantastic.

0:07:110:07:21

-The images in the book

-are fantastic.

0:07:300:07:38

-Valeriane Leblond is responsible.

0:07:380:07:40

-The pictures look great.

0:07:400:07:43

-She's a talented artist

-than can bring a story to life.

0:07:430:07:46

-The story is written in the form

-of a poem.

0:07:470:07:50

-There's a couplet on every page.

0:07:500:07:53

-The characters in the book are

-inspired by real life children.

0:07:530:08:01

-I've targeted the poem towards them.

0:08:010:08:06

-We hear that many Welsh books

-are translated from English.

0:08:230:08:27

-However, this was written in Welsh.

0:08:270:08:30

-There's been complaints that too

-many Welsh books are translations.

0:08:310:08:35

-However, an English adaptation

-has been made of this book.

0:08:350:08:45

-I hope that non-Welsh speakers will

-buy the book for their children...

0:08:530:08:58

-..and learn the language by reading

-the English one too.

0:08:580:09:02

-The names of locations are in Welsh

-in the English version.

0:09:020:09:06

-The place names haven't been

-translated in the English book.

0:09:060:09:12

-Tell us more about the competition.

0:09:120:09:16

-There's a competition to write

-a letter to Father Christmas.

0:09:160:09:20

-It's open to primary school pupils.

0:09:200:09:22

-They can write about their wishes

-for Christmas...

0:09:230:09:26

-..or why they deserve a gift.

0:09:260:09:28

-It can be about anything.

0:09:290:09:38

-The competition will be judged

-by Father Christmas.

0:09:380:09:44

-If you know of any primary school

-children...

0:09:450:09:47

-..tell them to start writing.

0:09:470:09:49

-Recent statistics claim that one in

-four suffers with mental health...

0:09:490:09:53

-..at some point during their lives.

0:09:530:09:55

-Living with mental Health issues

-can be lonely and challenging.

0:09:550:09:59

-The new website, www.meddwl.org is

-available in the Welsh language...

0:09:590:10:03

-..for those who want support

-and to share their experiences.

0:10:030:10:07

-Meddwl.org is a website

-that was established to provide...

0:10:110:10:15

-..mental health information and

-support through the medium of Welsh.

0:10:150:10:19

-There's information about a variety

-of different conditions.

0:10:190:10:23

-There's also a blog section that

-provides support to young people.

0:10:240:10:33

-It makes them feel

-that they're not alone.

0:10:330:10:37

-It's also a place to read

-about the experiences of others.

0:10:380:10:42

-This year, I was diagnosed with OCD.

0:10:430:10:47

-It has been to blame for my dark

-periods over the past eight years.

0:10:470:10:52

-Many people misunderstand OCD and

-it's been very frustrating for me.

0:10:520:10:57

-It's made it more difficult

-to get a diagnosis...

0:10:570:11:02

-..and I couldn't share my feelings.

0:11:020:11:06

-I decided to create a vlog and I

-was asked to share it on meddwl.org

0:11:060:11:12

-You should look at meddwl.org

-and research your symptoms.

0:11:130:11:18

-There are stories from people

-who've overcome difficult times.

0:11:180:11:25

-I won't lie, it can be difficult.

0:11:250:11:29

-I find strength by hearing from

-others who've overcome the disorder.

0:11:290:11:36

-We're always looking for assistance

-in running and funding the website.

0:11:370:11:44

0:11:590:12:02

-That's it for part one.

0:12:070:12:09

-After the break, we take a look

-..that have reached the shortlist

-of Welsh Book of the Year.

0:12:320:12:35

-We'll find out more about the books

-that have reached the shortlist.

0:12:350:12:39

-We start tonight

-with the poetry category.

0:12:390:12:41

-The book is a poem in memory

-of my cousin...

0:12:420:12:47

-..who died of cancer in 2014...

0:12:470:12:50

-..and the Welsh greats we've lost

-over the past ten years.

0:12:500:12:54

-I return to the loss

-of Ray Gravell.

0:12:550:12:58

-We've lost many other greats since

-including Gerallt Lloyd Owen...

0:12:590:13:03

-..Hywel Teifi Edwards, Osi Osmond

-and many other individuals...

0:13:030:13:07

-..that have played essential roles

-in our culture.

0:13:070:13:12

-Where there are gaps,

-things come to fill them.

0:13:120:13:16

-The tone of the book explains that

-the circle of life is painful...

0:13:170:13:21

-..but can also fill us with hope.

0:13:210:13:24

-After winning the Eisteddfod Chair

-in 2015, Barddas approached me...

0:13:240:13:28

-..to write a poetry book,

-so I went for it.

0:13:280:13:31

-The book derives from my college

-days in Bangor.

0:13:310:13:35

-Most of the poetry was written in

-College Road and Melton Terrace.

0:13:350:13:40

-The poems are about my college days,

-going out with friends and love.

0:13:410:13:46

-Enjoying life and

-not taking life for granted...

0:13:470:13:50

-..and realizing that student life

-is not going to last forever.

0:13:500:13:54

-I usually collect poetry for five

-years, before publishing a book.

0:13:540:14:01

-This collection shows different

-periods and locations of my life.

0:14:010:14:09

-There are many themes, including

-language, belonging, love...

0:14:100:14:16

-..family and things that we want to

-let go and keep close to our hearts.

0:14:170:14:27

-I hope the poetry will appeal

-to a wide audience.

0:14:280:14:31

0:15:160:15:20

-Your contributions to Heno will be

-appearing on the Llen Natur website.

0:15:200:15:25

-Let's find out more from Gerallt.

0:15:250:15:28

-Since establishing in 1978,

-the Edward Llwyd Society...

0:15:340:15:37

-..has evolved as a main conservation

-and nature group in Wales.

0:15:380:15:42

-A popular activity among members are

-the field trips held most Saturdays.

0:15:420:15:47

-There are three trips...

0:15:500:15:52

-..comprising of two in the north

-and one in the south.

0:15:520:15:56

-It's an opportunity to study and

-learn more about the natural world.

0:15:560:16:02

-You're never too old

-to learn about nature.

0:16:020:16:05

-Another project by the Society

-is called Llen Natur.

0:16:050:16:09

-On the website, Llen Natur, people

-post photographs from their trips.

0:16:090:16:14

-Duncan Brown and Twm Elias have

-worked diligently on Llen Natur.

0:16:170:16:25

-The website is about

-to embark upon a new chapter.

0:16:250:16:29

-Everyone can use the website but

-contributing is much easier now.

0:16:310:16:39

-You can access

-the Llen Natur Facebook page.

0:16:390:16:47

-Upload your images here and they'll

-soon make their way to the website.

0:16:480:16:53

-This is the latest publication

-by Llen Natur, Twm.

0:16:530:16:58

-It discuses fungi, toadstools and

-variety of mushrooms around Wales.

0:16:580:17:02

-This is the fourth volume

-in the series.

0:17:030:17:08

-A sum of almost 17,000 names

-have already been coined.

0:17:080:17:12

-We enjoyed learning about these

-brown, small, obscure fungi.

0:17:120:17:19

-One of them is called 'gogorogo'.

0:17:190:17:23

-There aren't many

-Welsh primitive terms.

0:17:230:17:28

-What was considered as useful was

-named as toadstools were the rest.

0:17:290:17:34

-'Gogorogo' is the fungus that

-is found growing on birch trees.

0:17:340:17:40

-'Bechdan brenin' is another term.

0:17:400:17:43

-What is 'bechdan brenin'?

0:17:430:17:47

-It's a similar fungus that

-grows at the base of the birch.

0:17:470:17:53

-It was used for all sorts things.

0:17:530:17:59

-They were kept in sweet tins

-ready to be placed on fishing hooks.

0:17:590:18:03

-It was very useful hence the

-reason for giving it a name.

0:18:030:18:06

-The others are bracken fungi but

-'gogorogo' is worth documenting.

0:18:070:18:12

-Once you coin a term,

-you have to make it official.

0:18:120:18:19

-Few Welsh terms exist for fungi.

0:18:210:18:24

-If they were potent and not very

-edible they weren't given a name.

0:18:240:18:29

-Examples include 'clust yr Iddew'

-or Jew's ear...

0:18:300:18:33

-..and 'ambarel bwgan'

-or parasol mushroom.

0:18:340:18:40

-My contribution was 'caws Cesar'

-or Caesar mushroom, which is edible.

0:18:400:18:45

-I coined the name

-of this mushroom...

0:18:450:18:48

-..including 'ambarel bwgan'

-known as the parasol mushroom.

0:18:480:18:53

-How can viewers get involved

-with the Llen Natur website?

0:18:550:18:59

-They can get involved

-in all sorts of ways.

0:19:000:19:03

-Take photos of anything fascinating

-in nature and the environment...

0:19:030:19:08

-..and document the place and time.

0:19:080:19:12

-You can share your contributions to

-the nature series on Heno with us.

0:19:150:19:23

-to the Edward Llwyd Society.

0:19:230:19:28

-We might see you on one of our

-Saturday trips in the near future.

0:19:280:19:33

-The Llen Natur website

-does some incredible work.

0:19:500:19:53

-It's important to safeguard our

-Welsh terms for plants and animals.

0:19:530:19:58

-Blodeuwedd was created from flowers.

0:19:580:20:06

-It's wonderful to see the

-continuation of flower names.

0:20:060:20:10

-Today, the Christmas stamps

-were unveiled by Royal Mail.

0:20:100:20:14

-It signals the time when we should

-start thinking of sending our cards.

0:20:140:20:19

-Let's take a look

-at this year's designs.

0:20:190:20:21

-We know Christmas is looming as the

-Christmas stamps were issued today.

0:20:220:20:27

-Our current Christmas stamps

-have been in print since 1966.

0:20:340:20:39

-This year's stamps are classic

-images of the Madonna and Child.

0:20:390:20:43

-They are based on portraits by

-Raphael and Renaissance artists.

0:20:440:20:51

-There are also wonderful stamps

-from a children's competition.

0:20:550:21:00

-The last time it was held back in

-2015, there were 360,000 applicants.

0:21:010:21:08

-This year, there were two young

-winners so there are two stamps.

0:21:090:21:14

-One depicts a family of snowmen and

-the other displays Father Christmas.

0:21:140:21:21

-They are great and the child

-can see its name on a stamp.

0:21:230:21:32
