Hi, I'm Katy B and I love music.

0:00:020:00:04

And I'm taking a group of Londonderry kids

0:00:040:00:07

who all love music, too, and giving them an opportunity to perform

0:00:070:00:10

on the biggest stages I can find.

0:00:100:00:12

We take talented young musicians

0:00:180:00:20

more used to performing in their bedrooms

0:00:200:00:23

and put them in front of an audience of thousands.

0:00:230:00:26

Big names...

0:00:280:00:30

big performances...

0:00:300:00:32

-and plenty of passion.

-Woo!

0:00:320:00:33

This is Music City.

0:00:330:00:35

I'm in Derry, which this year is UK City of Culture.

0:00:410:00:44

This means its calendar is packed with world-class events.

0:00:440:00:48

The city is determined that Derry's young people

0:00:510:00:53

get a chance to be involved,

0:00:530:00:54

and have created an initiative called The Music Promise.

0:00:540:00:58

As part of that, we scoured Derry's schools

0:01:000:01:02

to find 13 keen young musicians

0:01:020:01:04

to give them the chance to up their game,

0:01:040:01:07

work with some of the artists visiting this year...

0:01:070:01:09

I'm already liking your hand position, that's very good.

0:01:090:01:12

-How are you? I'm Amelia.

-..and perform on the biggest stages

0:01:120:01:16

Hi!

0:01:160:01:17

MUSIC: "Lights On" by Katy B

0:01:190:01:21

'I love music myself,

0:01:210:01:22

'and as a recording artist, I've been lucky enough

0:01:220:01:24

'to be able to make a life out of it.'

0:01:240:01:27

# I keep on moving with the lights on

0:01:270:01:31

# So come and play me just one more song

0:01:310:01:34

# I keep on moving... # 'I can't wait to be involved.'

0:01:340:01:37

I'd love to be here all year, but I've got gigs and commitments

0:01:410:01:44

all over the world, so Derry musicians

0:01:440:01:46

Glenn Rosborough and Jenny Grant are here to help me out.

0:01:460:01:50

# And when you start to shake

0:01:500:01:53

# I'll be there for you... #

0:01:530:01:55

Glenn plays in Wyldling,

0:01:550:01:57

one of Northern Ireland's most promising bands...

0:01:570:01:59

The spark of creativity they have

0:01:590:02:01

really reignites the spark that you have,

0:02:010:02:03

so I'm really forward to seeing where this is going to go.

0:02:030:02:06

..and Jenny is a leading Derry harpist and music teacher.

0:02:080:02:11

It's really inspiring to think

0:02:110:02:13

that these kids really have so much potential,

0:02:130:02:15

so I'm really, really excited to see what they're going to come up with.

0:02:150:02:19

It's 14-year-old Darrel's turn to start his Music City journey.

0:02:200:02:24

Darrel loves playing piano and has dreams of making it big.

0:02:240:02:29

I'd love to become a famous composer, go around the world.

0:02:290:02:32

He spends at least two hours a day practising on the old family piano

0:02:360:02:40

under the stairs and loves nothing more than composing his own tunes.

0:02:400:02:44

Music's so important to me, cos it's in me blood.

0:02:440:02:47

But it's not a love shared by his ten-year-old brother Tyrese.

0:02:470:02:51

Hey, messing me!

0:02:530:02:54

Go to your room now.

0:02:540:02:56

Mum Sharon encourages his piano practice as much as she can,

0:02:560:02:59

but she thinks that he could be putting just as much effort

0:02:590:03:02

into his homework.

0:03:020:03:04

Well, I keep telling him, "You need to study, as well,"

0:03:040:03:07

and that's something he's not doing

0:03:070:03:08

I prefer to play piano instead of schoolwork and homework,

0:03:080:03:13

and go through music.

0:03:130:03:14

Darrel, I would think, is very obsessed with the piano.

0:03:140:03:18

You know, because when it comes to his school work,

0:03:180:03:21

even when I go to interviews with the teachers,

0:03:210:03:23

they're actually saying he's daydreaming in class.

0:03:230:03:25

And you don't realise it's me who's...

0:03:250:03:27

-You're just saying, "Oh, you don't revise," and...

-But you don't.

0:03:270:03:30

-But I'm starting to!

-Yes...

-You can't see that!

0:03:300:03:32

You've this weird idea that you can go into your exam

0:03:320:03:34

-and pass it without studying.

-I don't have that idea! I don't have!

0:03:340:03:37

So, what are you going to do about it?

0:03:370:03:39

Work harder.

0:03:390:03:40

Hmm...I dunno. He doesn't sound that interested to me -

0:03:400:03:44

I think I'd better go round and have a chat.

0:03:440:03:46

Hi!

0:03:510:03:53

Ahh, thanks for having me here.

0:03:550:03:57

Cool. So, how old is your piano?

0:03:570:04:00

It's about 70 years old, it's very old.

0:04:000:04:03

And did it belong to anyone before you?

0:04:030:04:05

Yeah, me greatpapa had this, then it came to me Papa, like, me, grandda.

0:04:050:04:10

It's a hard one to tune, like.

0:04:100:04:12

-Yeah.

-You know, you won't get it spot on.

0:04:120:04:14

It's been in the family, so it's not going to get dumped.

0:04:140:04:16

-No.

-Like, it's...

-It's sentimental value

0:04:160:04:19

-Yeah.

-So, would you play me something?

-Yeah.

0:04:190:04:22

I've writ a couple of songs now. They're...not too good.

0:04:220:04:26

-They're just a couple of melodies, like this...

-Yeah.

0:04:260:04:29

HE PLAYS MELODY

0:04:290:04:32

'It may be an old piano, but it still does the job

0:04:400:04:43

'when Darrel composes his very own music.'

0:04:430:04:46

-It's kind of...

-It's lovely.

-I got this...

0:04:500:04:52

What you talking about, "They're not too good"?

0:04:520:04:54

That's amazing.

0:04:540:04:56

'Darrel's own compositions sound great.

0:04:560:04:59

'It's obvious he puts the work in,

0:04:590:05:00

'but mum Sharon wants to talk about the work he's NOT doing.'

0:05:000:05:05

But you see, with your music and stuff,

0:05:050:05:07

you would have needed to study, as well?

0:05:070:05:09

-I always knew that music was, like, what I wanted to do.

-Yeah.

0:05:090:05:13

Definitely. And I remember I didn't do my, um, like, maths homework.

0:05:130:05:18

-I failed maths...

-Uh-huh.

-..and then I had to go back

0:05:180:05:22

to college when I was in sixth form,

0:05:220:05:24

-to go and do every evening to go and do my maths classes.

-Right, OK.

0:05:240:05:28

-Really, I should have done my maths.

-Do you hear that, Darrel?

0:05:280:05:31

Because Darrel has this love for music

0:05:310:05:33

and that he wants to go professional and everything,

0:05:330:05:35

but that's what I'm trying to get through to him -

0:05:350:05:38

you need to study, as well.

0:05:380:05:39

-if he doesn't get his maths, I'm going with him.

-Aww.

0:05:390:05:41

And we're going to nightclass together,

0:05:410:05:43

which I think he might find embarrassing.

0:05:430:05:45

-That's what my mum did!

-Is that right, did she go with you?

0:05:450:05:47

She used to give me a lift, yeah. So, just, like, yeah, so...

0:05:470:05:51

So, we'll do your maths together.

0:05:510:05:53

'If doing maths classes with your mum

0:05:530:05:54

'isn't enough to get you studying, I don't know what is.

0:05:540:05:58

'Darrel has enormous talent,

0:05:580:06:00

'but I think he needs someone to guide him to the next level.'

0:06:000:06:03

Another Music City kid starting her journey is 12-year-old Chloe.

0:06:090:06:13

Chloe loves to sing, but up until this year,

0:06:130:06:16

she has struggled to turn her passion for music into reality.

0:06:160:06:19

But that has all changed this year with Derry being City Of Culture.

0:06:220:06:26

A big part of it is all about getting as wide a range of people

0:06:260:06:29

involved in music as possible,

0:06:290:06:30

and Chloe has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

0:06:300:06:34

She's part of the city youth choir

0:06:340:06:36

that's been performing at major City Of Culture events all year.

0:06:360:06:40

It was amazing - I would do it again any day. I loved it.

0:06:400:06:43

It was really good.

0:06:430:06:44

-SINGS:

-Valerie...

0:06:440:06:45

'But Chloe has a very special reason for wanting to get up and sing.'

0:06:450:06:48

'My mammy played the violin, she sang.

0:06:480:06:51

'She was very musical, like.'

0:06:510:06:53

but she passed away in June.

0:06:530:06:55

Just June just past.

0:06:550:06:58

# Oh, if you could see me now... #

0:06:580:07:00

She inspires me, and I'd love to turn out like her,

0:07:000:07:03

in terms of education and stuff.

0:07:030:07:05

With no father on the scene as well, it has been a tough year for Chloe.

0:07:070:07:11

But she is being supported

0:07:110:07:12

both by the Western Health and Social Services Trust

0:07:120:07:15

and her friends.

0:07:150:07:17

Singing in the choir has meant a lot to her,

0:07:170:07:20

but I think the time is right for this girl to find her own voice.

0:07:200:07:24

# I've been thinking 'bout all the things I'm searching for

0:07:240:07:28

# 20 years from now... #

0:07:280:07:29

As a first step, I've organised for her to meet

0:07:290:07:31

one of her musical heroes, Amelia Lily.

0:07:310:07:35

I'm trying to figure out what to wear.

0:07:350:07:37

I don't want to look too dressy

0:07:370:07:38

and I don't want to look too causal, so...

0:07:380:07:40

I never thought in a million years I'd ever meet Amelia Lily.

0:07:400:07:43

Ever, even when I was watching X Factor. No!

0:07:430:07:47

# Oh, you bring me joy You bring me sadness

0:07:470:07:50

# So you bring the love So forget all the madness... #

0:07:500:07:52

You're on tour at the minute with Girls Aloud.

0:07:520:07:55

I am. I never thought it would have happened so quick.

0:07:550:07:57

-What age are you now?

-I'm 18.

-You're 18.

0:07:570:08:00

And you're on stage tonight in Belfast,

0:08:000:08:02

and tomorrow evening at 7:35, you're going along to the Odyssey.

0:08:020:08:06

Hello, Chloe. How are you?

0:08:090:08:12

-Nice to meet you. I'm Amelia.

-Hi!

-I've heard you're a big fan of me.

0:08:120:08:16

-Yeah.

-I like your jumper!

-Thank you!

0:08:160:08:18

-I like your jeans, as well, you've got style.

-Thank you.

0:08:180:08:21

Sit down and talk to me, yeah?

0:08:210:08:23

So, I've come to see you today, to give you a boost.

0:08:230:08:26

This is, like, one tip I'll tell you, and...

0:08:260:08:30

Never, ever give up on whatever you want to do.

0:08:300:08:32

Whether you want to be a singer, whether you want to play the violin

0:08:320:08:35

whether you want to be a doctor, whatever you want to do in life,

0:08:350:08:38

don't let anybody tell you what to do.

0:08:380:08:39

And if you want to do it, you stick at it,

0:08:390:08:41

cos one day, you know, you could be sat where I am.

0:08:410:08:44

So, give me a cuddle...

0:08:440:08:46

-And I hope that this little chat's helped you, yeah?

-Yeah.

0:08:460:08:49

# Oh, you bring me joy You bring me sadness... #

0:08:490:08:51

With that advice to set her on her way, I've got big plans for Chloe.

0:08:510:08:55

IRISH FOLK MUSIC PLAYS

0:08:550:08:59

Last time, I met 14-year-old fiddle player Conall.

0:08:590:09:03

More used to playing to his number one superfan...

0:09:050:09:08

That dog's dancing!

0:09:080:09:10

I've organised for him to take centre stage

0:09:130:09:16

at the All-Ireland Fleadh.

0:09:160:09:17

400,000 people are expected and he is one of the festival highlights -

0:09:200:09:25

playing alongside Cara Dillon.

0:09:250:09:27

He's been putting in some serious hours learning his piece.

0:09:290:09:33

I've been practising hard, and...

0:09:330:09:36

I'm really looking forward to it now, but I'm still a bit scared.

0:09:360:09:40

That's the poster.

0:09:420:09:44

18.50 for a ticket!

0:09:440:09:47

God, she must be really big.

0:09:470:09:49

I'm only realising how big it's going to be, because it's sold out.

0:09:500:09:54

But time for practise is over.

0:09:570:09:58

Conall heads to the concert hall, with grandad Tommy,

0:10:030:10:06

who is being supportive, as always.

0:10:060:10:08

Is that a Cara Dillon haircut you've got, eh?

0:10:080:10:12

Shut up!

0:10:120:10:14

You don't have hair to cut.

0:10:140:10:16

As night falls, with every last seat filled for Cara Dillon's concert,

0:10:220:10:26

the enormity of what he has taken on seems to be hitting home.

0:10:260:10:30

It's a big crowd.

0:10:300:10:31

APPLAUSE

0:10:340:10:36

The performance gets under way.

0:10:400:10:41

Waiting in the wings - things seem to be warming up.

0:10:440:10:48

There's a bit of an issue - it's too warm.

0:10:490:10:53

So your hands get sweaty and your fingers are slipping

0:10:530:10:56

when you're playing, so I hope that just doesn't happen.

0:10:560:11:00

My big performance and that happens? God.

0:11:000:11:02

Slippery fingers or not, Conall will just have to get on with the show.

0:11:070:11:11

This is it, ready to go.

0:11:130:11:16

We've got a very special guest here tonight. Um, he's a young lad

0:11:160:11:20

and he's a only 14. Do you want to come on out here, Conall?

0:11:200:11:24

Come on!

0:11:240:11:25

APPLAUSE

0:11:270:11:29

And tonight he's going to perform Eirigh suas a Stoirin with us.

0:11:340:11:37

So, there you go. Give it up for Conall. Woo!

0:11:370:11:41

SHE SINGS IN GAELIC

0:11:480:11:52

-Woo!

-APPLAUSE

0:12:410:12:44

Oh, it was brilliant! Class.

0:12:570:13:00

My God, never done something like that before. Amazing.

0:13:000:13:03

Got three rounds of applause.

0:13:030:13:05

I never knew it was going to be that good, actually.

0:13:070:13:10

I want to do that again.

0:13:100:13:12

And again and again

0:13:140:13:15

I think he was fantastic.

0:13:200:13:22

It was really brilliant and I think it just added

0:13:220:13:25

to the excitement of tonight, you know?

0:13:250:13:27

It's a real big deal here and for a young local lad to come out

0:13:270:13:32

and do that is just so brilliant.

0:13:320:13:34

I couldn't have done that when I was 14.

0:13:340:13:36

-We were nearly crying!

-Crying on the front row!

0:13:360:13:39

I could get used to this.

0:13:390:13:41

Oh!

0:13:410:13:43

Give us a hug, give us a hug! Brilliant.

0:13:430:13:46

I'm probably more excited than you are, you know?

0:13:460:13:49

Absolutely blew me away. It blew me away, that ending.

0:13:490:13:52

Blew me away.

0:13:520:13:53

I think Chloe is ready to step up to the next level

0:14:030:14:06

and find her own voice.

0:14:060:14:08

Jenny has some exciting news for her.

0:14:080:14:10

Chloe, I think you're ready, now, to step away from the choir,

0:14:100:14:13

move out on your own.

0:14:130:14:15

And we've got something really exciting lined up for you.

0:14:150:14:18

We've arranged that a Derry Band

0:14:180:14:20

called Paddy Nash and The Happy Enchiladas

0:14:200:14:22

are going to back you up and you're going to be singing

0:14:220:14:24

at a festival called Stendhal Festival,

0:14:240:14:27

and there's going to be a lot of people there,

0:14:270:14:29

-singing any song you want.

-Oh, my God!

0:14:290:14:31

5,000 people at the festival.

0:14:310:14:34

# Aaah! #

0:14:360:14:38

With their blend of folk, pop and rock,

0:14:380:14:40

Paddy Nash and the Happy Enchiladas are a popular live band

0:14:400:14:43

and they will be playing at the Stendhal Festival

0:14:430:14:46

in just three weeks.

0:14:460:14:48

-It's amazing isn't it?

-That's amazing.

0:14:480:14:50

Oh, Chloe! Honestly, it's just... I'm so excited for you.

0:14:500:14:53

-I want to cry!

-Aww!

0:14:530:14:55

Going from singing in a group to singing solo

0:14:550:14:58

is a definite step up and can be quite daunting,

0:14:580:15:02

so I'm sending Chloe to see Street Theatre Director Nicky Harley

0:15:020:15:07

-I'm relying on you to give me... confidence!

-OK.

0:15:070:15:10

Well, if you can do some of the things we do today,

0:15:100:15:12

you'll be able to do anything.

MUSIC: "Mahna Mahna" by The Muppets

0:15:140:15:17

-# Mahna mahna

-Doo doo doo-doo-doo... #

0:15:210:15:24

Confidence is the name of the game when you get up on your own

0:15:240:15:27

for the first time in front of an audience,

0:15:270:15:29

and Nicky's exercises are great

0:15:290:15:31

at helping her get rid of her inhibitions.

MUPPET SCATS

0:15:330:15:39

# Um-ah went the little green frog one day

0:15:390:15:42

# Um-ah went the little green frog... #

0:15:420:15:45

-# Mahna mahna

-Doo doo doo-doo-doo... #

0:15:450:15:47

Good skills!

0:15:470:15:50

-# Mahna mahna

-Doo doo doo-doo-doo

0:15:500:15:52

# Doo-doo-doo... #

0:15:520:15:53

But it's a workshop with a twist.

0:15:530:15:56

So, you've a young girl who is going to do some street theatre.

0:15:560:15:59

Chloe is going to have to try it all out for real.

0:15:590:16:02

We've got an audience here. We'll try and gather them round.

0:16:020:16:06

# Um-ah went the little green frog one day

0:16:070:16:10

# Um-ah went the little green frog

0:16:100:16:13

# Um-ah went the little green frog one day

0:16:130:16:16

# And the frog went Um-um-ahhh! #

0:16:160:16:19

Well, if you can do that, Chloe, Stendhal should be a breeze.

0:16:190:16:23

I think I've more confidence now,

0:16:230:16:24

cos it doesn't matter what people think, it's just - you're doing it,

0:16:240:16:27

and at least you have the guts to do it.

0:16:270:16:29

Chloe has to choose a song to sing at the Stendhal Festival,

0:16:310:16:35

and, luckily, hasn't gone for Little Green Frog!

0:16:350:16:37

I'll sing along beside you,

0:16:370:16:38

cos you need to get those two wee lines right here. Try it again.

0:16:380:16:42

Instead, she'll perform the smash hit, Beneath You're Beautiful,

0:16:420:16:45

by Emeli Sande and Labrinth.

0:16:450:16:47

She's taking it to rehearse with Paddy Nash and the Happy Enchiladas

0:16:470:16:50

for the very first time.

0:16:500:16:53

# See beneath you're perfect

0:16:530:16:55

# Take it off, now, boy

0:16:550:16:57

# Take it off, now... #

0:16:570:16:58

I just want to try the chorus,

0:16:580:16:59

cos there's just something not sounding right in that "Take it off."

0:16:590:17:02

OK, start again, now, at "You've carried on so long."

0:17:020:17:05

-OK.

-And you're just going to look at me

0:17:050:17:07

and you're going to trust yourself, right?

0:17:070:17:08

-HE CHUCKLES

-I know, I know.

0:17:080:17:10

I know, I'm laughing, cos it's true.

0:17:100:17:12

It's funny, cos it's true, then.

0:17:120:17:14

-OK.

-And we're going to get a wee groove on, here,

0:17:160:17:18

so we're going to forget about everything and just do it, right?

0:17:180:17:21

-Just going to look at you and no-one else.

-Right.

0:17:210:17:23

Go for it - three, four...

0:17:230:17:26

# You've built your wall so high

0:17:260:17:30

# That no-one could climb it

0:17:300:17:35

# But I'm going to try

0:17:350:17:38

# If you will let me... #

0:17:380:17:40

Chloe seems to be struggling with the original key the song is in.

0:17:400:17:44

Paddy has an idea that just might work.

0:17:440:17:46

-SHE PLAYS KAZOO

-Oh, my God!

0:17:460:17:48

-So you're going for the Enchilada version, then?

-Aye.

0:17:510:17:53

Good stuff.

0:17:530:17:55

# You tell all the boys "No"

0:18:040:18:08

# Makes you feel good, yeah

0:18:080:18:14

They were all Grumpy Burritos there, for a minute.

0:18:160:18:18

Now they all Happy Enchiladas again.

0:18:180:18:21

Good job.

0:18:210:18:22

The Paddy Nash spin on the song seems to be working.

0:18:220:18:25

Chloe has a week of hard practise ahead, to get her tune nailed.

0:18:250:18:29

There we go.

0:18:290:18:30

The last time we saw the Music City group all together,

0:18:350:18:37

they were getting creative to kick-start some fresh ideas

0:18:370:18:41

for a cover version of Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol.

0:18:410:18:44

They're going to record their version of the tune

0:18:490:18:51

and shoot a video, but first they need to work out

0:18:510:18:54

how all the different instruments and voices

0:18:540:18:56

are going to work together.

0:18:560:18:57

Glenn and Jenny have assembled the group over the weekend

0:18:580:19:01

to work on the arrangement, but time is ticking.

0:19:010:19:04

Cool!

0:19:040:19:05

We've only got one more set of practice to go through

0:19:050:19:08

before we go into the studio,

0:19:080:19:09

so really, now, what they need to do is start coming up with ideas,

0:19:090:19:12

because the last thing we can do is go into the studio

0:19:120:19:14

and start wasting time trying to come up with ideas.

0:19:140:19:17

All right?

0:19:170:19:18

Let's take it from that chorus, so it's after two...

0:19:180:19:22

# If I lay... #

0:19:220:19:23

Right?

0:19:230:19:24

# If I just lay here

0:19:240:19:28

# Would you lie with me... #

0:19:280:19:32

It's still a bit ropey. Every time we do it, it changes slightly,

0:19:320:19:36

and that's not good enough, you know?

0:19:360:19:38

Most of them haven't been in a recording studio before,

0:19:380:19:40

so that will throw them a bit,

0:19:400:19:42

so there is a lot of work that needs to be done before then.

0:19:420:19:45

So, does anyone have any questions, or any ideas?

0:19:450:19:48

Anything that they want to bring forward? Cos now's a good time.

0:19:480:19:51

Can we make the song a little bit faster, a little tiny bit faster?

0:19:510:19:55

Aye. Because that's...

0:19:550:19:57

-That's too slow.

-Yeah.

-Like this...

0:19:570:19:59

-HE PLAYS A FASTER BEAT

-Yeah.

0:19:590:20:02

Music City drummer Jason has made a suggestion

0:20:020:20:04

that starts to get the group owning the track.

0:20:040:20:07

I love the intro - like, the harp and the violin.

0:20:130:20:17

How it just comes in so softly, and then it builds up,

0:20:170:20:19

and you've got that amazing beat coming on -

0:20:190:20:21

it's really, like... gets you really pumped.

0:20:210:20:23

That tempo change and that stop - perfect ideas

0:20:230:20:27

I can't stop thinking about how great Darrel's piano playing is,

0:20:320:20:35

and the time feels right for him to step it up a notch

0:20:350:20:39

Jenny is taking him to meet Neil Cowley.

0:20:410:20:44

Neil is City of Culture's musician-in-residence.

0:20:440:20:46

Neil has played on some of the biggest hits

0:20:460:20:49

of this century, working with people like Emeli Sande and Adele.

0:20:490:20:52

# Could have had it all

0:20:520:20:56

# Rolling in the deep... #

0:20:560:21:00

I've heard about you. I've heard all about you. The word is out

0:21:000:21:03

in the city about you. So is it true to say you're classically trained?

0:21:030:21:07

Yeah.

0:21:070:21:08

There is no better person for Darrel to work with

0:21:080:21:11

and help him determine

0:21:110:21:12

whether his dream of making a life in music

0:21:120:21:14

is realistic. And for once,

0:21:140:21:16

Darrel has done his homework and knows exactly what to ask for.

0:21:160:21:20

I used to play Rolling In The Deep.

0:21:200:21:22

-Right.

-You played that one?

-I did play on that.

0:21:220:21:24

I was watching on YouTube.

0:21:240:21:26

Did you watch that clip of me

0:21:260:21:27

-filming it in the studio?

-Go on, play it.

0:21:270:21:30

-You want me to do it?

-Yeah.

-So, do you play that one?

0:21:300:21:33

-No, I used to.

-What do you mean, "You used to"?

0:21:330:21:35

Why don't we re-learn Rolling In The Deep?

0:21:360:21:38

-Yeah.

-Is that a good idea. Cos I think that's what I played on it.

0:21:380:21:41

-Something like that.

-Yeah, that's it.

0:21:410:21:44

Yeah, I'm glad you're here to tell me!

0:21:440:21:46

I'm already...

0:21:520:21:53

I'm already liking your hand position, that's very good.

0:21:530:21:55

So you play that part, I'll play this part.

0:21:550:21:58

Two, three, and...

0:21:580:22:01

THEY PLAY: "Rolling In The Deep"

0:22:010:22:03

A flat major.

0:22:040:22:06

If you can do that with the fourth finger, that'd be perfect.

0:22:060:22:09

Three and...

0:22:090:22:10

That's it.

0:22:110:22:12

-NEIL HUMS

-Perfect

0:22:120:22:14

Well done. Yeah, you got it, you got it straight away.

0:22:260:22:28

But what's amazing about you is your technique.

0:22:280:22:30

You know you've got that

0:22:300:22:32

and you've got that over 95% of people.

0:22:320:22:35

You've got a classical technique. You're very fluid,

0:22:350:22:38

you jump from one end of the piano

0:22:380:22:39

to the other, no bother at all. You...

0:22:390:22:41

You could... You've got everything within your grasp technically,

0:22:410:22:45

for you to do exactly what you want

0:22:450:22:47

for the rest of your life. I'm telling you, you really have,

0:22:470:22:50

you know, because it's just all there, it's all natural.

0:22:500:22:53

You know, it's been drilled into him or whatever,

0:22:530:22:55

but it's working beautifully. It's possible that the only area

0:22:550:22:59

that you need to think about and develop is your ear.

0:22:590:23:02

And if you start just, sort of, messing round, just playing...

0:23:020:23:05

If Neil is telling him he's good, he really must have something special.

0:23:060:23:11

Neil is a great teacher, and I know that Darrel wants to

0:23:110:23:14

compose his own tunes, so hopefully they can continue to work together.

0:23:140:23:18

He reminds me of myself at that age. I think he's, um...

0:23:180:23:22

It's his passion for it that completely overwhelms you, you know.

0:23:220:23:26

Anything you like, as long as it's those notes.

0:23:280:23:30

Keep going.

0:23:300:23:31

IMPROVISED MELODY

0:23:310:23:33

That's your voice.

0:23:390:23:40

Yeah.

0:23:490:23:50

That's beautiful. That's great. You know,

0:23:530:23:56

you made all that up, and it all made sense,

0:23:560:23:58

and it's beautiful, and melodic

0:23:580:23:59

and it's lovely. You're a jazz musician.

0:23:590:24:01

FOLK MUSIC PLAYS

0:24:010:24:03

The time has come for Chloe to take the stage

0:24:030:24:06

with Paddy Nash & The Happy Enchiladas.

0:24:060:24:09

ROCK MUSIC PLAYS

0:24:090:24:11

Her gig with the band is at the Stendhal Festival of Art,

0:24:170:24:20

which gathers all things creative from across Ireland

0:24:200:24:23

for a full and fun weekend of art,

0:24:230:24:26

performance and, of course, music.

0:24:260:24:28

With the festival in full swing, Chloe arrives for her gig.

0:24:300:24:34

I'm just backstage behind the Stendhal tent, where I'm performing.

0:24:340:24:38

And I've just spotted the artists' hospitality tent.

0:24:380:24:42

I think you can get, like, tea and stuff there.

0:24:420:24:44

I think it's special that I'm at festival and it's my first festival.

0:24:460:24:50

Unfortunately, my mum can't be here with us, but, um, everything I do

0:24:500:24:54

basically is for her and I'm sure she's looking down.

0:24:540:24:59

And I can't wait to just go on and make her proud so...

0:24:590:25:03

I'm very excited.

0:25:030:25:05

I choose Beneath Your Beautiful because, in school,

0:25:050:25:09

I was always bullied and I was never properly...

0:25:090:25:12

I was never... I was seen as invisible.

0:25:120:25:15

I was never seen as somebody.

0:25:150:25:17

So it says... It says like "beneath you are beautiful",

0:25:170:25:22

and everybody's beautiful in some way, so...

0:25:220:25:26

# I'll see you in the sun... #

0:25:260:25:28

The Paddy Nash gig is well under way.

0:25:280:25:30

In just a few moments,

0:25:300:25:31

she'll see if her three weeks of hard work have paid off.

0:25:310:25:34

She has never sung solo before in front of an audience.

0:25:340:25:38

The crowd is massive now.

0:25:380:25:41

I didn't know. I didn't expect it to be this big -

0:25:410:25:45

obviously a lot of people know Paddy Nash.

0:25:450:25:48

A very special guest today.

0:25:480:25:50

Folks put your hands together for young Chloe.

0:25:510:25:54

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:25:540:25:58

Hello everybody!

0:25:580:26:00

# You let all the girls go

0:26:020:26:05

# Makes you feel good, don't it?

0:26:050:26:11

# Behind your Broadway show

0:26:110:26:15

# I heard a voice say "Please don't hurt me"

0:26:150:26:20

# You've carried on so long

0:26:210:26:23

# You couldn't stop if you tried it

0:26:230:26:28

# Oo-ooh oo-hoo

0:26:280:26:31

# You've built your wall so high

0:26:310:26:34

# No-one could climb it

0:26:340:26:38

# But I'm going to try

0:26:380:26:40

# Would you let me see beneath your beautiful?

0:26:420:26:45

# Would you let me see beneath your perfect?

0:26:450:26:50

# Take it off now, girl Take it off now, girl

0:26:500:26:53

# I want to see inside

0:26:530:26:55

# Would you let me see beneath your beautiful tonight? #

0:26:550:27:02

CHEERING

0:27:060:27:09

Hi, everybody!

0:27:090:27:11

That was absolutely amazing. That was just... Oh, it was unreal.

0:27:210:27:25

I really didn't expect that big of a crowd.

0:27:250:27:27

Oh, it was absolutely amazing.

0:27:270:27:28

# You've carried on so long

0:27:280:27:31

# You couldn't stop if you tried it... #

0:27:310:27:35

I actually give all the credit to my mum, I think,

0:27:350:27:38

cos she's just, she's, kind of, like

0:27:380:27:40

my lucky charm, she's just always there.

0:27:400:27:43

Hope she's proud of me, like. I'm really proud of myself, as well.

0:27:430:27:47

# See beneath your beautiful?

0:27:470:27:49

# Would you let me see beneath... #

0:27:490:27:52

-Did you enjoy that?

-Yeah, brilliant. Oh, it was absolutely amazing.

0:27:520:27:56

You were fantastic

0:27:560:27:57

'I thought she was brilliant.'

0:27:570:27:59

It was a great feeling playing it on stage, buzzing off the crowd.

0:27:590:28:02

She... Fair play to her, she nailed it.

0:28:020:28:04

I don't think anybody has heard that song like that before.

0:28:040:28:07

We should record it. We should release it!

0:28:070:28:09

I know. I'm so grateful for the...

0:28:090:28:11

-50/50.

-All right.

-50/50.

-Definitely.

0:28:110:28:14

Next time... Will Connor pull off his lambeg dance track?

0:28:170:28:20

I'm kind of nervous, like, cos no-one's ever heard it.

0:28:200:28:23

I hope it's a good reaction.

0:28:230:28:24

Will Darrell make it to the stage?

0:28:240:28:26

I feel sick. I'm feeling nervous - really nervous.

0:28:260:28:30

-And the Music City kids say goodbye.

-Is this the end now?

-Is that it?
