Hi, I'm Katy B and I love music. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
And I'm taking a group of Londonderry kids | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
who all love music, too, and giving them an opportunity to perform | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
on the biggest stages I can find. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
We take talented young musicians | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
more used to performing in their bedrooms | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
and put them in front of an audience of thousands. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
Big names... | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
big performances... | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
-and plenty of passion. -Woo! | 0:00:32 | 0:00:33
This is Music City. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
I'm in Derry, which this year is UK City of Culture. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
This means its calendar is packed with world-class events. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:48
The city is determined that Derry's young people | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
get a chance to be involved, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
and have created an initiative called The Music Promise. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:58
As part of that, we scoured Derry's schools | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
to find 13 keen young musicians | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
to give them the chance to up their game, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
work with some of the artists visiting this year... | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
I'm already liking your hand position, that's very good. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
-How are you? I'm Amelia. -..and perform on the biggest stages | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
Hi! | 0:01:16 | 0:01:17 | |
MUSIC: "Lights On" by Katy B | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
'I love music myself, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:22
'and as a recording artist, I've been lucky enough | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
'to be able to make a life out of it.' | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
# I keep on moving with the lights on | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
# So come and play me just one more song | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
# I keep on moving... # 'I can't wait to be involved.' | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
I'd love to be here all year, but I've got gigs and commitments | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
all over the world, so Derry musicians | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
Glenn Rosborough and Jenny Grant are here to help me out. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
# And when you start to shake | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
# I'll be there for you... # | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
Glenn plays in Wyldling, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
one of Northern Ireland's most promising bands... | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
The spark of creativity they have | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
really reignites the spark that you have, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
so I'm really forward to seeing where this is going to go. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
..and Jenny is a leading Derry harpist and music teacher. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
It's really inspiring to think | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
that these kids really have so much potential, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
so I'm really, really excited to see what they're going to come up with. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
It's 14-year-old Darrel's turn to start his Music City journey. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
Darrel loves playing piano and has dreams of making it big. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:29
I'd love to become a famous composer, go around the world. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
He spends at least two hours a day practising on the old family piano | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
under the stairs and loves nothing more than composing his own tunes. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
Music's so important to me, cos it's in me blood. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
But it's not a love shared by his ten-year-old brother Tyrese. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
Hey, messing me! | 0:02:53 | 0:02:54
Go to your room now. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
Mum Sharon encourages his piano practice as much as she can, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
but she thinks that he could be putting just as much effort | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
into his homework. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
Well, I keep telling him, "You need to study, as well," | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
and that's something he's not doing | 0:03:07 | 0:03:08
I prefer to play piano instead of schoolwork and homework, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:13
and go through music. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:14
Darrel, I would think, is very obsessed with the piano. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
You know, because when it comes to his school work, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
even when I go to interviews with the teachers, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
they're actually saying he's daydreaming in class. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
And you don't realise it's me who's... | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
-You're just saying, "Oh, you don't revise," and... -But you don't. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
-But I'm starting to! -Yes... -You can't see that! | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
You've this weird idea that you can go into your exam | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
-and pass it without studying. -I don't have that idea! I don't have! | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
So, what are you going to do about it? | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
Work harder. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:40
Hmm...I dunno. He doesn't sound that interested to me - | 0:03:40 | 0:03:44
I think I'd better go round and have a chat. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
Hi! | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53 | |
Ahh, thanks for having me here. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
Cool. So, how old is your piano? | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
It's about 70 years old, it's very old. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
And did it belong to anyone before you? | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
Yeah, me greatpapa had this, then it came to me Papa, like, me, grandda. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:10
It's a hard one to tune, like. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
-Yeah. -You know, you won't get it spot on. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
It's been in the family, so it's not going to get dumped. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
-No. -Like, it's... -It's sentimental value | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
-Yeah. -So, would you play me something? -Yeah. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
I've writ a couple of songs now. They're...not too good. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:26
-They're just a couple of melodies, like this... -Yeah. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
HE PLAYS MELODY | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
'It may be an old piano, but it still does the job | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
'when Darrel composes his very own music.' | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
-It's kind of... -It's lovely. -I got this... | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
What you talking about, "They're not too good"? | 0:04:52 | 0:04:54
That's amazing. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:56
'Darrel's own compositions sound great. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
'It's obvious he puts the work in, | 0:04:59 | 0:05:00
'but mum Sharon wants to talk about the work he's NOT doing.' | 0:05:00 | 0:05:05
But you see, with your music and stuff, | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
you would have needed to study, as well? | 0:05:07 | 0:05:09
-I always knew that music was, like, what I wanted to do. -Yeah. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:13
Definitely. And I remember I didn't do my, um, like, maths homework. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:18
-I failed maths... -Uh-huh. -..and then I had to go back | 0:05:18 | 0:05:22
to college when I was in sixth form, | 0:05:22 | 0:05:24
-to go and do every evening to go and do my maths classes. -Right, OK. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
-Really, I should have done my maths. -Do you hear that, Darrel? | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
Because Darrel has this love for music | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
and that he wants to go professional and everything, | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
but that's what I'm trying to get through to him - | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
you need to study, as well. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:39
-if he doesn't get his maths, I'm going with him. -Aww. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41
And we're going to nightclass together, | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43
which I think he might find embarrassing. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
-That's what my mum did! -Is that right, did she go with you? | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
She used to give me a lift, yeah. So, just, like, yeah, so... | 0:05:47 | 0:05:51
So, we'll do your maths together. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
'If doing maths classes with your mum | 0:05:53 | 0:05:54
'isn't enough to get you studying, I don't know what is. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
'Darrel has enormous talent, | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
'but I think he needs someone to guide him to the next level.' | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
Another Music City kid starting her journey is 12-year-old Chloe. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:13
Chloe loves to sing, but up until this year, | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
she has struggled to turn her passion for music into reality. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
But that has all changed this year with Derry being City Of Culture. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
A big part of it is all about getting as wide a range of people | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
involved in music as possible, | 0:06:29 | 0:06:30
and Chloe has grabbed the opportunity with both hands. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:34
She's part of the city youth choir | 0:06:34 | 0:06:36
that's been performing at major City Of Culture events all year. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
It was amazing - I would do it again any day. I loved it. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
It was really good. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:44
-SINGS: -Valerie... | 0:06:44 | 0:06:45
'But Chloe has a very special reason for wanting to get up and sing.' | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
'My mammy played the violin, she sang. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
'She was very musical, like.' | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
but she passed away in June. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
Just June just past. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
# Oh, if you could see me now... # | 0:06:58 | 0:07:00
She inspires me, and I'd love to turn out like her, | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
in terms of education and stuff. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:05
With no father on the scene as well, it has been a tough year for Chloe. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
But she is being supported | 0:07:11 | 0:07:12
both by the Western Health and Social Services Trust | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
and her friends. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
Singing in the choir has meant a lot to her, | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
but I think the time is right for this girl to find her own voice. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:24
# I've been thinking 'bout all the things I'm searching for | 0:07:24 | 0:07:28
# 20 years from now... # | 0:07:28 | 0:07:29
As a first step, I've organised for her to meet | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
one of her musical heroes, Amelia Lily. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:35
I'm trying to figure out what to wear. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:37
I don't want to look too dressy | 0:07:37 | 0:07:38
and I don't want to look too causal, so... | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
I never thought in a million years I'd ever meet Amelia Lily. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
Ever, even when I was watching X Factor. No! | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
# Oh, you bring me joy You bring me sadness | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
# So you bring the love So forget all the madness... # | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
You're on tour at the minute with Girls Aloud. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
I am. I never thought it would have happened so quick. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
-What age are you now? -I'm 18. -You're 18. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
And you're on stage tonight in Belfast, | 0:08:00 | 0:08:02
and tomorrow evening at 7:35, you're going along to the Odyssey. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:06
Hello, Chloe. How are you? | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
-Nice to meet you. I'm Amelia. -Hi! -I've heard you're a big fan of me. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
-Yeah. -I like your jumper! -Thank you! | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
-I like your jeans, as well, you've got style. -Thank you. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
Sit down and talk to me, yeah? | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
So, I've come to see you today, to give you a boost. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
This is, like, one tip I'll tell you, and... | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
Never, ever give up on whatever you want to do. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
Whether you want to be a singer, whether you want to play the violin | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
whether you want to be a doctor, whatever you want to do in life, | 0:08:35 | 0:08:38
don't let anybody tell you what to do. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:39
And if you want to do it, you stick at it, | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
cos one day, you know, you could be sat where I am. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
So, give me a cuddle... | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
-And I hope that this little chat's helped you, yeah? -Yeah. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
# Oh, you bring me joy You bring me sadness... # | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
With that advice to set her on her way, I've got big plans for Chloe. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:55
IRISH FOLK MUSIC PLAYS | 0:08:55 | 0:08:59
Last time, I met 14-year-old fiddle player Conall. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
More used to playing to his number one superfan... | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
That dog's dancing! | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
I've organised for him to take centre stage | 0:09:13 | 0:09:16
at the All-Ireland Fleadh. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:17
400,000 people are expected and he is one of the festival highlights - | 0:09:20 | 0:09:25
playing alongside Cara Dillon. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
He's been putting in some serious hours learning his piece. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
I've been practising hard, and... | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
I'm really looking forward to it now, but I'm still a bit scared. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:40
That's the poster. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:44
18.50 for a ticket! | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
God, she must be really big. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:49
I'm only realising how big it's going to be, because it's sold out. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:54
But time for practise is over. | 0:09:57 | 0:09:58
Conall heads to the concert hall, with grandad Tommy, | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
who is being supportive, as always. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
Is that a Cara Dillon haircut you've got, eh? | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
Shut up! | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
You don't have hair to cut. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
As night falls, with every last seat filled for Cara Dillon's concert, | 0:10:22 | 0:10:26
the enormity of what he has taken on seems to be hitting home. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:30
It's a big crowd. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:31
APPLAUSE | 0:10:34 | 0:10:36
The performance gets under way. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:41
Waiting in the wings - things seem to be warming up. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:48
There's a bit of an issue - it's too warm. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:53
So your hands get sweaty and your fingers are slipping | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
when you're playing, so I hope that just doesn't happen. | 0:10:56 | 0:11:00
My big performance and that happens? God. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:02
Slippery fingers or not, Conall will just have to get on with the show. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:11
This is it, ready to go. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
We've got a very special guest here tonight. Um, he's a young lad | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
and he's a only 14. Do you want to come on out here, Conall? | 0:11:20 | 0:11:24
Come on! | 0:11:24 | 0:11:25
APPLAUSE | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
And tonight he's going to perform Eirigh suas a Stoirin with us. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
So, there you go. Give it up for Conall. Woo! | 0:11:37 | 0:11:41
SHE SINGS IN GAELIC | 0:11:48 | 0:11:52
-Woo! -APPLAUSE | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
Oh, it was brilliant! Class. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
My God, never done something like that before. Amazing. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:03
Got three rounds of applause. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:05
I never knew it was going to be that good, actually. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
I want to do that again. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:12
And again and again | 0:13:14 | 0:13:15
I think he was fantastic. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:22
It was really brilliant and I think it just added | 0:13:22 | 0:13:25
to the excitement of tonight, you know? | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
It's a real big deal here and for a young local lad to come out | 0:13:27 | 0:13:32
and do that is just so brilliant. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:34
I couldn't have done that when I was 14. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
-We were nearly crying! -Crying on the front row! | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
I could get used to this. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:41
Oh! | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43 | |
Give us a hug, give us a hug! Brilliant. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
I'm probably more excited than you are, you know? | 0:13:46 | 0:13:49
Absolutely blew me away. It blew me away, that ending. | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
Blew me away. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:53
I think Chloe is ready to step up to the next level | 0:14:03 | 0:14:06
and find her own voice. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:08
Jenny has some exciting news for her. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:10
Chloe, I think you're ready, now, to step away from the choir, | 0:14:10 | 0:14:13
move out on your own. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:15
And we've got something really exciting lined up for you. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:18
We've arranged that a Derry Band | 0:14:18 | 0:14:20
called Paddy Nash and The Happy Enchiladas | 0:14:20 | 0:14:22
are going to back you up and you're going to be singing | 0:14:22 | 0:14:24
at a festival called Stendhal Festival, | 0:14:24 | 0:14:27
and there's going to be a lot of people there, | 0:14:27 | 0:14:29
-singing any song you want. -Oh, my God! | 0:14:29 | 0:14:31
5,000 people at the festival. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:34
# Aaah! # | 0:14:36 | 0:14:38
With their blend of folk, pop and rock, | 0:14:38 | 0:14:40
Paddy Nash and the Happy Enchiladas are a popular live band | 0:14:40 | 0:14:43
and they will be playing at the Stendhal Festival | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
in just three weeks. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:48
-It's amazing isn't it? -That's amazing. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:50
Oh, Chloe! Honestly, it's just... I'm so excited for you. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
-I want to cry! -Aww! | 0:14:53 | 0:14:55
Going from singing in a group to singing solo | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
is a definite step up and can be quite daunting, | 0:14:58 | 0:15:02
so I'm sending Chloe to see Street Theatre Director Nicky Harley | 0:15:02 | 0:15:07
-I'm relying on you to give me... confidence! -OK. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
Well, if you can do some of the things we do today, | 0:15:10 | 0:15:12
you'll be able to do anything. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:14
MUSIC: "Mahna Mahna" by The Muppets | 0:15:14 | 0:15:17
-# Mahna mahna -Doo doo doo-doo-doo... # | 0:15:21 | 0:15:24
Confidence is the name of the game when you get up on your own | 0:15:24 | 0:15:27
for the first time in front of an audience, | 0:15:27 | 0:15:29
and Nicky's exercises are great | 0:15:29 | 0:15:31
at helping her get rid of her inhibitions. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:33
MUPPET SCATS | 0:15:33 | 0:15:39
# Um-ah went the little green frog one day | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
# Um-ah went the little green frog... # | 0:15:42 | 0:15:45
-# Mahna mahna -Doo doo doo-doo-doo... # | 0:15:45 | 0:15:47
Good skills! | 0:15:47 | 0:15:50
-# Mahna mahna -Doo doo doo-doo-doo | 0:15:50 | 0:15:52
# Doo-doo-doo... # | 0:15:52 | 0:15:53
But it's a workshop with a twist. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:56
So, you've a young girl who is going to do some street theatre. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
Chloe is going to have to try it all out for real. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:02
We've got an audience here. We'll try and gather them round. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:06
# Um-ah went the little green frog one day | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
# Um-ah went the little green frog | 0:16:10 | 0:16:13
# Um-ah went the little green frog one day | 0:16:13 | 0:16:16
# And the frog went Um-um-ahhh! # | 0:16:16 | 0:16:19
Well, if you can do that, Chloe, Stendhal should be a breeze. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:23
I think I've more confidence now, | 0:16:23 | 0:16:24
cos it doesn't matter what people think, it's just - you're doing it, | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
and at least you have the guts to do it. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:29
Chloe has to choose a song to sing at the Stendhal Festival, | 0:16:31 | 0:16:35
and, luckily, hasn't gone for Little Green Frog! | 0:16:35 | 0:16:37
I'll sing along beside you, | 0:16:37 | 0:16:38
cos you need to get those two wee lines right here. Try it again. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:42
Instead, she'll perform the smash hit, Beneath You're Beautiful, | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
by Emeli Sande and Labrinth. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:47
She's taking it to rehearse with Paddy Nash and the Happy Enchiladas | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
for the very first time. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:53
# See beneath you're perfect | 0:16:53 | 0:16:55
# Take it off, now, boy | 0:16:55 | 0:16:57
# Take it off, now... # | 0:16:57 | 0:16:58
I just want to try the chorus, | 0:16:58 | 0:16:59
cos there's just something not sounding right in that "Take it off." | 0:16:59 | 0:17:02
OK, start again, now, at "You've carried on so long." | 0:17:02 | 0:17:05
-OK. -And you're just going to look at me | 0:17:05 | 0:17:07
and you're going to trust yourself, right? | 0:17:07 | 0:17:08
-HE CHUCKLES -I know, I know. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
I know, I'm laughing, cos it's true. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:12
It's funny, cos it's true, then. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:14
-OK. -And we're going to get a wee groove on, here, | 0:17:16 | 0:17:18
so we're going to forget about everything and just do it, right? | 0:17:18 | 0:17:21
-Just going to look at you and no-one else. -Right. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:23
Go for it - three, four... | 0:17:23 | 0:17:26
# You've built your wall so high | 0:17:26 | 0:17:30
# That no-one could climb it | 0:17:30 | 0:17:35
# But I'm going to try | 0:17:35 | 0:17:38
# If you will let me... # | 0:17:38 | 0:17:40
Chloe seems to be struggling with the original key the song is in. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:44
Paddy has an idea that just might work. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:46
-SHE PLAYS KAZOO -Oh, my God! | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
-So you're going for the Enchilada version, then? -Aye. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:53
Good stuff. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:55
# You tell all the boys "No" | 0:18:04 | 0:18:08
# Makes you feel good, yeah | 0:18:08 | 0:18:14
They were all Grumpy Burritos there, for a minute. | 0:18:16 | 0:18:18
Now they all Happy Enchiladas again. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:21
Good job. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:22
The Paddy Nash spin on the song seems to be working. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:25
Chloe has a week of hard practise ahead, to get her tune nailed. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:29
There we go. | 0:18:29 | 0:18:30
The last time we saw the Music City group all together, | 0:18:35 | 0:18:37
they were getting creative to kick-start some fresh ideas | 0:18:37 | 0:18:41
for a cover version of Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
They're going to record their version of the tune | 0:18:49 | 0:18:51
and shoot a video, but first they need to work out | 0:18:51 | 0:18:54
how all the different instruments and voices | 0:18:54 | 0:18:56
are going to work together. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:57
Glenn and Jenny have assembled the group over the weekend | 0:18:58 | 0:19:01
to work on the arrangement, but time is ticking. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:04
Cool! | 0:19:04 | 0:19:05 | |
We've only got one more set of practice to go through | 0:19:05 | 0:19:08
before we go into the studio, | 0:19:08 | 0:19:09
so really, now, what they need to do is start coming up with ideas, | 0:19:09 | 0:19:12
because the last thing we can do is go into the studio | 0:19:12 | 0:19:14
and start wasting time trying to come up with ideas. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:17
All right? | 0:19:17 | 0:19:18
Let's take it from that chorus, so it's after two... | 0:19:18 | 0:19:22
# If I lay... # | 0:19:22 | 0:19:23
Right? | 0:19:23 | 0:19:24
# If I just lay here | 0:19:24 | 0:19:28
# Would you lie with me... # | 0:19:28 | 0:19:32
It's still a bit ropey. Every time we do it, it changes slightly, | 0:19:32 | 0:19:36
and that's not good enough, you know? | 0:19:36 | 0:19:38
Most of them haven't been in a recording studio before, | 0:19:38 | 0:19:40
so that will throw them a bit, | 0:19:40 | 0:19:42
so there is a lot of work that needs to be done before then. | 0:19:42 | 0:19:45
So, does anyone have any questions, or any ideas? | 0:19:45 | 0:19:48
Anything that they want to bring forward? Cos now's a good time. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
Can we make the song a little bit faster, a little tiny bit faster? | 0:19:51 | 0:19:55
Aye. Because that's... | 0:19:55 | 0:19:57
-That's too slow. -Yeah. -Like this... | 0:19:57 | 0:19:59
-HE PLAYS A FASTER BEAT -Yeah. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:02
Music City drummer Jason has made a suggestion | 0:20:02 | 0:20:04
that starts to get the group owning the track. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
I love the intro - like, the harp and the violin. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:17
How it just comes in so softly, and then it builds up, | 0:20:17 | 0:20:19
and you've got that amazing beat coming on - | 0:20:19 | 0:20:21
it's really, like... gets you really pumped. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:23
That tempo change and that stop - perfect ideas | 0:20:23 | 0:20:27
I can't stop thinking about how great Darrel's piano playing is, | 0:20:32 | 0:20:35
and the time feels right for him to step it up a notch | 0:20:35 | 0:20:39
Jenny is taking him to meet Neil Cowley. | 0:20:41 | 0:20:44
Neil is City of Culture's musician-in-residence. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:46
Neil has played on some of the biggest hits | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
of this century, working with people like Emeli Sande and Adele. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:52
# Could have had it all | 0:20:52 | 0:20:56
# Rolling in the deep... # | 0:20:56 | 0:21:00
I've heard about you. I've heard all about you. The word is out | 0:21:00 | 0:21:03
in the city about you. So is it true to say you're classically trained? | 0:21:03 | 0:21:07
Yeah. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:08 | |
There is no better person for Darrel to work with | 0:21:08 | 0:21:11
and help him determine | 0:21:11 | 0:21:12
whether his dream of making a life in music | 0:21:12 | 0:21:14
is realistic. And for once, | 0:21:14 | 0:21:16
Darrel has done his homework and knows exactly what to ask for. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:20
I used to play Rolling In The Deep. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
-Right. -You played that one? -I did play on that. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:24
I was watching on YouTube. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:26
Did you watch that clip of me | 0:21:26 | 0:21:27
-filming it in the studio? -Go on, play it. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
-You want me to do it? -Yeah. -So, do you play that one? | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
-No, I used to. -What do you mean, "You used to"? | 0:21:33 | 0:21:35
Why don't we re-learn Rolling In The Deep? | 0:21:36 | 0:21:38
-Yeah. -Is that a good idea. Cos I think that's what I played on it. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
-Something like that. -Yeah, that's it. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:44
Yeah, I'm glad you're here to tell me! | 0:21:44 | 0:21:46
I'm already... | 0:21:52 | 0:21:53
I'm already liking your hand position, that's very good. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:55
So you play that part, I'll play this part. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
Two, three, and... | 0:21:58 | 0:22:01
THEY PLAY: "Rolling In The Deep" | 0:22:01 | 0:22:03
A flat major. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:06
If you can do that with the fourth finger, that'd be perfect. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:09
Three and... | 0:22:09 | 0:22:10
That's it. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:12
-NEIL HUMS -Perfect | 0:22:12 | 0:22:14
Well done. Yeah, you got it, you got it straight away. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
But what's amazing about you is your technique. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:30
You know you've got that | 0:22:30 | 0:22:32
and you've got that over 95% of people. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:35
You've got a classical technique. You're very fluid, | 0:22:35 | 0:22:38
you jump from one end of the piano | 0:22:38 | 0:22:39
to the other, no bother at all. You... | 0:22:39 | 0:22:41
You could... You've got everything within your grasp technically, | 0:22:41 | 0:22:45
for you to do exactly what you want | 0:22:45 | 0:22:47
for the rest of your life. I'm telling you, you really have, | 0:22:47 | 0:22:50
you know, because it's just all there, it's all natural. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:53
You know, it's been drilled into him or whatever, | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
but it's working beautifully. It's possible that the only area | 0:22:55 | 0:22:59
that you need to think about and develop is your ear. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:02
And if you start just, sort of, messing round, just playing... | 0:23:02 | 0:23:05
If Neil is telling him he's good, he really must have something special. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:11
Neil is a great teacher, and I know that Darrel wants to | 0:23:11 | 0:23:14
compose his own tunes, so hopefully they can continue to work together. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:18
He reminds me of myself at that age. I think he's, um... | 0:23:18 | 0:23:22
It's his passion for it that completely overwhelms you, you know. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:26
Anything you like, as long as it's those notes. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
Keep going. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:31
IMPROVISED MELODY | 0:23:31 | 0:23:33
That's your voice. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:40
Yeah. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:50 | |
That's beautiful. That's great. You know, | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
you made all that up, and it all made sense, | 0:23:56 | 0:23:58
and it's beautiful, and melodic | 0:23:58 | 0:23:59
and it's lovely. You're a jazz musician. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:01
FOLK MUSIC PLAYS | 0:24:01 | 0:24:03
The time has come for Chloe to take the stage | 0:24:03 | 0:24:06
with Paddy Nash & The Happy Enchiladas. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:09
ROCK MUSIC PLAYS | 0:24:09 | 0:24:11
Her gig with the band is at the Stendhal Festival of Art, | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
which gathers all things creative from across Ireland | 0:24:20 | 0:24:23
for a full and fun weekend of art, | 0:24:23 | 0:24:26
performance and, of course, music. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:28
With the festival in full swing, Chloe arrives for her gig. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:34
I'm just backstage behind the Stendhal tent, where I'm performing. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:38
And I've just spotted the artists' hospitality tent. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:42
I think you can get, like, tea and stuff there. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:44
I think it's special that I'm at festival and it's my first festival. | 0:24:46 | 0:24:50
Unfortunately, my mum can't be here with us, but, um, everything I do | 0:24:50 | 0:24:54
basically is for her and I'm sure she's looking down. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:59
And I can't wait to just go on and make her proud so... | 0:24:59 | 0:25:03
I'm very excited. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:05
I choose Beneath Your Beautiful because, in school, | 0:25:05 | 0:25:09
I was always bullied and I was never properly... | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
I was never... I was seen as invisible. | 0:25:12 | 0:25:15
I was never seen as somebody. | 0:25:15 | 0:25:17
So it says... It says like "beneath you are beautiful", | 0:25:17 | 0:25:22
and everybody's beautiful in some way, so... | 0:25:22 | 0:25:26
# I'll see you in the sun... # | 0:25:26 | 0:25:28
The Paddy Nash gig is well under way. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:30
In just a few moments, | 0:25:30 | 0:25:31
she'll see if her three weeks of hard work have paid off. | 0:25:31 | 0:25:34
She has never sung solo before in front of an audience. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:38
The crowd is massive now. | 0:25:38 | 0:25:41
I didn't know. I didn't expect it to be this big - | 0:25:41 | 0:25:45
obviously a lot of people know Paddy Nash. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:48
A very special guest today. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:50
Folks put your hands together for young Chloe. | 0:25:51 | 0:25:54
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:25:54 | 0:25:58
Hello everybody! | 0:25:58 | 0:26:00
# You let all the girls go | 0:26:02 | 0:26:05
# Makes you feel good, don't it? | 0:26:05 | 0:26:11
# Behind your Broadway show | 0:26:11 | 0:26:15
# I heard a voice say "Please don't hurt me" | 0:26:15 | 0:26:20
# You've carried on so long | 0:26:21 | 0:26:23
# You couldn't stop if you tried it | 0:26:23 | 0:26:28
# Oo-ooh oo-hoo | 0:26:28 | 0:26:31
# You've built your wall so high | 0:26:31 | 0:26:34
# No-one could climb it | 0:26:34 | 0:26:38
# But I'm going to try | 0:26:38 | 0:26:40
# Would you let me see beneath your beautiful? | 0:26:42 | 0:26:45
# Would you let me see beneath your perfect? | 0:26:45 | 0:26:50
# Take it off now, girl Take it off now, girl | 0:26:50 | 0:26:53
# I want to see inside | 0:26:53 | 0:26:55
# Would you let me see beneath your beautiful tonight? # | 0:26:55 | 0:27:02
CHEERING | 0:27:06 | 0:27:09
Hi, everybody! | 0:27:09 | 0:27:11
