Hi, I'm Katy B and this is Hit The Stage

0:00:020:00:05

and I'm going to be taking a group of budding musicians and

0:00:050:00:08

giving them the chance to perform on the biggest stages we can find.

0:00:080:00:11

Budding DJ's go from playing their

0:00:170:00:19

mum and dad's parties to rocking the decks at major festivals.

0:00:190:00:22

Singers from singing hymns in church to performing to sell-out crowds.

0:00:220:00:27

And song writers from sharing their songs with no-one to playing

0:00:270:00:30

to an audience of thousands.

0:00:300:00:33

Are you ready to Hit The Stage! We are!

CHEERING

0:00:360:00:37

MUSIC: "Lights On" by Katy B

0:00:410:00:42

# I keep on moving with the lights on... #

0:00:420:00:46

I've been lucky enough to make a life out of doing something

0:00:460:00:49

that I love, singing and performing.

0:00:490:00:53

# So you won't scare me with the lights on. #

0:00:530:00:55

You may even know some of my hit singles.

0:00:550:00:59

And now I'm in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

0:00:590:01:02

Why am I here? Well, it's simple. This year the city is the UK's

0:01:020:01:06

first ever City Of Culture which means there's loads of massive

0:01:060:01:09

music events happening all year round.

0:01:090:01:12

And I'm going to help some local kids to Hit The Stage.

0:01:120:01:15

I won't be doing it alone, I've got two local musicians to help me

0:01:190:01:23

out when I'm not around.

0:01:230:01:25

Glenn, who loves hitting the stage himself

0:01:250:01:27

when he's rocking out with his band.

0:01:270:01:29

The spark of creativity that they have really reignites

0:01:290:01:32

the spark that you have so I'm really forward to the 8 months,

0:01:320:01:34

and seeing where this is going to go.

0:01:340:01:37

And Jenny who likes to take things a bit more slowly

0:01:370:01:40

when she's teaching students how to play the harp or sing.

0:01:400:01:43

It's really inspiring to think that these kids really have

0:01:430:01:46

so much potential so I'm really,

0:01:460:01:48

really excited to see what they're going to come up with.

0:01:480:01:52

Last time we saw two of our group Hit The Stage in style.

0:01:520:01:56

Eibhin singing in front of thousands at a City of Culture concert,

0:01:560:02:00

and Hannah going on tour to Leeds

0:02:000:02:01

and playing her brand new song in front of a great crowd.

0:02:010:02:04

Starting her Hit The Stage adventure today

0:02:090:02:11

is 12-year-old Chloe.

0:02:110:02:13

Chloe loves to sing but up until this year

0:02:130:02:15

she has struggled to turn her passion for music into reality.

0:02:150:02:18

City Of Culture is all about giving musical opportunity to anyone

0:02:210:02:25

who wants it and Chloe has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

0:02:250:02:30

She's part of the City Youth Choir that has been performing

0:02:300:02:33

at major City Of Culture events all year. And she's loving it.

0:02:330:02:37

It was amazing I would do it any day. I loved it.

0:02:370:02:41

# Valerie

0:02:410:02:44

# Valerie. #

0:02:440:02:46

But Chloe has a very special reason for wanting to get up and sing.

0:02:460:02:49

My mother played the violin, she sang. She was very musical like.

0:02:490:02:53

But she passed away in June.

0:02:530:02:55

MUSIC: "If You Could See Me Now" by The Script

0:02:550:02:58

And she inspires me

0:02:580:02:59

on an off day to turn out like her in terms of education and stuff.

0:02:590:03:03

I can see why singing is so important for her

0:03:030:03:06

and I love the fact she's getting involved in the City of Culture

0:03:060:03:09

choir and I think the time is right for this girl to find her own voice.

0:03:090:03:13

MUSIC: "You Bring Me Joy" by Amelia Lily

0:03:130:03:16

# I've been thinking bout all the things...

0:03:160:03:18

And as a first step on the road to singing solo I've

0:03:180:03:20

organised for her to meet one of her musical heroes, Amelia Lily.

0:03:200:03:25

I'm trying to figure out what to wear.

0:03:250:03:27

I don't want to look too dressy and I don't

0:03:270:03:30

want to look too causal so... Never thought in a million years I'd

0:03:300:03:33

ever meet Amelia Lily, ever, even when I was watching X Factor. Nope.

0:03:330:03:37

# Oh, you bring me joy

0:03:370:03:39

# Yeah, you bring me sadness

0:03:390:03:41

# So you bring the love

0:03:410:03:42

# So forget all the madness

0:03:420:03:44

# I'm done with all the pain

0:03:440:03:46

# I'm done with all the happenings

0:03:460:03:48

# So you bring me joy... #

0:03:480:03:50

Hello, Chloe. How are you?

0:03:500:03:54

Nice to meet you. I'm Amelia. I've heard you're a big fan of me.

0:03:540:03:58

-Yeah.

-I like your jumper.

-Thank you.

0:03:580:04:00

-I like your jeans as well, you've got style.

-Thank you.

0:04:000:04:02

Sit down and talk to me, yeah. So I've come to see you today to give

0:04:020:04:07

you a boost. This is, like, one tip I'll tell you

0:04:070:04:11

and never ever give up on whatever you want to do. Whether you

0:04:110:04:14

want to be a singer, whether you want to play the violin whether

0:04:140:04:17

you want to be a doctor, whatever you want to do in life, don't

0:04:170:04:20

let anybody tell you tell what to do and if you want to do it you stick

0:04:200:04:22

at it, cos one day, you know, you could be sat where I am. So give

0:04:220:04:26

me a cuddle and I'll hope that this little chat's helped you, yeah?

0:04:260:04:30

Yeah.

0:04:300:04:31

With that advice to set her on her way I'll have a

0:04:310:04:34

think about how Chloe can fulfil her dreams of singing solo.

0:04:340:04:37

Last time I told 14-year-old fiddle player Conal that he's going

0:04:390:04:43

to be centre stage at the world's largest Irish Music Festival,

0:04:430:04:47

the All-Ireland Fleadh.

0:04:470:04:49

Up till now, he's only ever played small events around the city,

0:04:500:04:54

or at home to his dog.

0:04:540:04:56

That dog's dancing.

0:04:570:04:58

But in just three weeks he'll be playing on the main

0:04:580:05:01

stage of the festival with the headline act, singer Cara Dillon

0:05:010:05:04

and her band. It's a big step up for him and if he's going to be ready

0:05:040:05:08

in time there's plenty of practice to be done. But what's this?

0:05:080:05:13

It looks like Conal is going somewhere.

0:05:130:05:16

I'm packing, going to the caravan.

0:05:160:05:19

Going to do a bit of fishing, bit of surfing and stuff.

0:05:190:05:23

A holiday to grandad's caravan before your big gig?

0:05:230:05:26

But what about all your practise?

0:05:260:05:29

Well that's a relief. Looks like he's packing his fiddle too.

0:05:290:05:32

The tune Conal has to learn is much faster than anything he's

0:05:350:05:39

ever done before.

0:05:390:05:40

You worry about this new tune Conal?

0:05:440:05:46

Well, it's just doing the standard and the speed of it.

0:05:460:05:49

The speed of it. The best way to learn a tune is to

0:05:490:05:51

whistle it. And whistle it at the speed that it's played.

0:05:510:05:55

So that will

0:05:550:05:56

give your wee brain a notion that here I have to play this

0:05:560:05:59

at a certain speed. Would you rather be playing tunes or washing dishes?

0:05:590:06:03

-Playing tunes.

-Would you?

0:06:030:06:05

That's good advice from grandad Tommy, whistle it.

0:06:060:06:09

But Conal knows best

0:06:090:06:10

and he's decided to listen to it on his tablet instead.

0:06:100:06:13

It looks like

0:06:140:06:16

a great day to get into the water but if you want to succeed in music

0:06:160:06:19

sometimes you have to sacrifice the things you'd rather be doing.

0:06:190:06:22

So I'm delighted Conal is choosing to focus on his practise instead.

0:06:220:06:26

I have to learn it on me own,

0:06:260:06:27

I have to learn it without the sheet music and stuff like that.

0:06:270:06:31

I have to learn it by ear so I'll have another listen to it now.

0:06:310:06:35

Like a lot of Irish traditional tunes there's no music

0:06:380:06:41

written down so Conal will have to rely on his ear.

0:06:410:06:44

It's going to be a tough couple of weeks for him

0:06:440:06:47

but I know he can do it!

0:06:470:06:49

But right now it's 14-year-old Darrell's turn to start his

0:06:490:06:52

Hit The Stage journey.

0:06:520:06:53

Darrell loves playing piano and has dreams of making it big.

0:06:590:07:02

I'd love to become a famous composer, go around the world.

0:07:040:07:08

He spends at least two hours a day practising on the old family piano

0:07:120:07:16

under the stairs, and loves nothing more than composing his own tunes.

0:07:160:07:20

Music's so important to me cos it's in me blood.

0:07:200:07:22

But, it's not a love shared by his 10 year old brother Tyrese.

0:07:230:07:27

Hey, missed me...

0:07:290:07:30

And it can be tough to fit practise in

0:07:300:07:32

when all your younger brother wants to do is wrestle.

0:07:320:07:34

Go to your room now.

0:07:340:07:35

Mum Sharon encourages his piano practise as much as she can but she

0:07:370:07:40

thinks that he could be putting just as much effort into his homework.

0:07:400:07:45

But I keep telling me you need to study as well

0:07:450:07:47

and that's something he's not doing.

0:07:470:07:49

I prefer to play piano instead of school work and homework

0:07:490:07:53

and go for music.

0:07:530:07:55

Darrell I would think is very obsessed with the piano you know

0:07:550:07:58

because when it comes to his school work even

0:07:580:08:01

when I go to interviews with the teachers they're actually saying

0:08:010:08:04

he's day dreaming in class,

0:08:040:08:05

and you don't realise it's me trying to...

0:08:050:08:07

But you're saying, "Oh, you know you don't revise," and all this..

0:08:070:08:10

-But you don't...

-But I'm starting to, you can't see that?

0:08:100:08:13

You've this weird idea that you can go into your exam

0:08:130:08:15

and pass it without studying.

0:08:150:08:17

I don't have it.

0:08:170:08:18

-So what are you going to do about it?

-Work harder.

0:08:180:08:21

Hmm. I dunno, he doesn't sound that interested to me. I think

0:08:220:08:26

I'd better go round and have a chat.

0:08:260:08:28

-So would you play me something?

-Yeah.

0:08:380:08:40

Do you ever, do you ever write them?

0:08:400:08:42

Um, I've wrote a couple of songs now, but they're

0:08:420:08:46

not too good, they're just a couple of melodies like all this.

0:08:460:08:50

Darrell told me that this

0:08:520:08:53

old piano has been in the family for generations. He loves

0:08:530:08:56

playing it even if it is getting harder to tune in its old age.

0:08:560:09:00

-It's kind of...

-It's lovely.

-I got this...

0:09:110:09:14

What you talking about "They're not too good," that's amazing.

0:09:140:09:17

Darrel's own compositions sound great. It's obvious he puts

0:09:170:09:20

the work in but mum Sharon wants to talk about the work he's not doing.

0:09:200:09:26

See my homework, say in form class,

0:09:260:09:30

if I don't have it done I just do it in form class.

0:09:300:09:32

-That's the first I've heard of that.

-Oh, really?

-Uh-huh.

0:09:320:09:35

-Well that's true.

-Keeping more track now on homework.

0:09:350:09:39

But you see with your music

0:09:390:09:40

and stuff you would have needed to study as well? Yes?

0:09:400:09:43

I failed maths. I had to go back to college when I was in 6th form,

0:09:430:09:48

to go and do every evening to go and do my math classes.

0:09:480:09:51

Right. OK.

0:09:510:09:52

Do you hear that, Darrell?

0:09:520:09:53

Because Darrell has this love for music

0:09:530:09:55

and that he wants to go professional and everything

0:09:550:09:58

but that's what I'm trying to get through to him. You need to

0:09:580:10:00

-study as well. If he doesn't get his maths I'm going with him.

-Ahh.

0:10:000:10:04

And we're going to night class together which I think...

0:10:040:10:06

Well, that's what my mum did.

0:10:060:10:08

Is that right did she go with you?

0:10:080:10:10

She used to give me a lift. Yeah.

0:10:100:10:11

So we'll do your maths together.

0:10:130:10:15

If doing maths classes

0:10:150:10:16

with your mum isn't enough to get you studying,

0:10:160:10:18

I don't know what is. I'll be keeping an eye on Darrel.

0:10:180:10:21

Chloe has had a tough year

0:10:270:10:28

and I know she dreams of making her mum proud by singing live on

0:10:280:10:31

stage so I've sent Jenny to let her know that she's going to be stepping

0:10:310:10:35

out from her choir and singing solo at a festival with a local band.

0:10:350:10:39

-Oh, my God.

-5,000 people at the festival, so the band

0:10:390:10:43

that are going to be playing with you they're a really, they're a

0:10:430:10:46

-massive band, there's loads of them on stage.

-That's amazing isn't it?

0:10:460:10:49

Oh, my God.

0:10:490:10:51

I'm giving Chloe the opportunity to sing any song

0:10:520:10:55

she wants at a City of Culture festival with one of Derry's

0:10:550:10:58

best live bands, Paddy Nash and The Happy Enchiladas.

0:10:580:11:02

I know just how hard it can be to step on stage and sing in front

0:11:050:11:09

of a crowd, especially if you've never done it before.

0:11:090:11:12

It's all about confidence

0:11:120:11:14

so I've got something a bit different in store for Chloe.

0:11:140:11:17

A workshop with Nicky Harley from Derry's circus school, that

0:11:170:11:20

should give her a great boost so she can Hit The Stage with confidence!

0:11:200:11:24

I'm relying on you to give me confidence.

0:11:240:11:27

OK. Well if you can do some of the things

0:11:270:11:29

we do today you'll be able to do anything.

0:11:290:11:32

Chloe is learning to be a clown.

0:11:320:11:34

Clowning is all about focus, like any performance.

0:11:340:11:38

All right go!

0:11:380:11:39

THEY LAUGH

0:11:430:11:44

SHE SCREAMS

0:11:460:11:47

Being a clown is not as easy as you might think!

0:11:490:11:52

A clown never gives up.

0:11:520:11:55

That's great advice. Never give up, Chloe!

0:11:550:11:58

# "Um, ah", went the little green frog one day

0:11:580:12:00

# "Um, ah", went the little green frog. #

0:12:000:12:03

Street theatre looks like a lot of fun and it's great to

0:12:080:12:11

see Chloe just letting herself go but it's not called street theatre

0:12:110:12:15

for nothing. It's time to take her new skills and hit the street.

0:12:150:12:18

This is super scary. If Chloe can do this

0:12:230:12:25

I reckon singing at a festival will be a breeze.

0:12:250:12:28

You've got an audience here.

0:12:280:12:30

Go for it, Chloe!

0:12:300:12:31

# "Um, ah", went the little green frog one day

0:12:310:12:34

# "Um, ah", went the little green frog

0:12:340:12:37

# "Um, ah", went the little green frog one day

0:12:370:12:41

# And the frog went, "Um, um, ahhh." #

0:12:410:12:44

That took some bottle

0:12:450:12:46

but I hope Chloe won't have to sing Little Green Frog at the festival.

0:12:460:12:49

I think I've more confidence now cos it doesn't matter what people think,

0:12:490:12:53

it's just, you're doing it, and at least you have the guts to do it.

0:12:530:12:56

Along with their own musical journeys our Hit The Stage

0:13:010:13:04

gang are also playing together as a City of Culture supergroup.

0:13:040:13:07

They're recording their very own cover version of Snow Patrol's

0:13:090:13:12

hit song Chasing Cars and making a music video to go with it.

0:13:120:13:16

Conal!

0:13:170:13:19

We've only got one more set of practice to go

0:13:190:13:21

through before we go into the studio because the last thing

0:13:210:13:24

we can do is go into the studio and start wasting time.

0:13:240:13:27

All right?

0:13:270:13:28

Let's take it from that chorus so it's after two...

0:13:280:13:31

# If I lay... # Right?

0:13:310:13:33

# If I just lay here

0:13:330:13:36

# Would you lie with me and just forget... #

0:13:380:13:42

Hmm, I dunno it's all sounding a bit flat.

0:13:420:13:45

So does anyone have any questions, or any ideas?

0:13:450:13:48

Anything that they want to bring forward, cos now's a good time.

0:13:480:13:51

Can we make the song a little bit faster a little tiny bit faster?

0:13:510:13:54

-Aye, because that's...

-That's too slow.

0:13:540:13:57

-Yeah.

-Like this.

0:13:570:13:58

That's a great suggestion from Hit The Stage drummer Jason.

0:14:010:14:05

..three, four.

0:14:050:14:06

# I don't quite know

0:14:080:14:12

# How to say... #

0:14:120:14:14

Yeah, that's starting to sound much better.

0:14:140:14:16

That tempo change and that stop, perfect ideas.

0:14:160:14:19

There still is a lot of individual practise they all need to do,

0:14:220:14:24

it's still a bit ropey.

0:14:240:14:26

Every time we do it it changes it slightly

0:14:260:14:28

and that's not good enough, you know, most of them

0:14:280:14:31

haven't been in a recording studio before so that will throw

0:14:310:14:34

them a bit. So there is a lot of work

0:14:340:14:35

that needs to be done before then.

0:14:350:14:37

One, two, three, four.

0:14:370:14:40

# Through it all... #

0:14:410:14:44

'I love the intro like the harp and the violin how it just'

0:14:440:14:48

comes in so softly and then it builds up and you got that

0:14:480:14:51

amazing beat coming in, it's really like, gets you really pumped.

0:14:510:14:54

Two, three, four.

0:14:540:14:56

I've seen so much progression, like, just today, like, it's

0:15:040:15:08

really starting to come together now, so it is.

0:15:080:15:10

That's pretty good.

0:15:130:15:15

If you've ever thought of forming a band with your mates, here's

0:15:180:15:21

some top tips.

0:15:210:15:23

I think when you're forming a band you know, it's important that

0:15:230:15:26

you have a mixture of you know different characters.

0:15:260:15:28

It's good that you've got good chemistry.

0:15:280:15:30

You've got to be friends. You know, everyone's got to get on well.

0:15:300:15:33

I think that's very important that you get on as friends.

0:15:330:15:35

Obviously you need to be good at your individual instrument, as well.

0:15:350:15:39

Hopefully you bring, sort of, different

0:15:430:15:45

skills to the table. You know, whether maybe someone's more

0:15:450:15:48

technically sort of gifted and

0:15:480:15:50

maybe someone else is

0:15:500:15:52

better at the business side of it,

0:15:520:15:53

there's so much you need

0:15:530:15:54

these days as a musician or

0:15:540:15:56

a producer, to be successful.

0:15:560:15:58

It really helps working in a team.

0:15:580:16:00

I had been in different bands with different friends.

0:16:020:16:05

And Alex had been in different bands

0:16:050:16:07

with different friends and we just

0:16:070:16:08

kind of all three of us play guitar,

0:16:080:16:10

we like the same music and we just kind of said, "Do you want to get in

0:16:100:16:14

"a garage and just play?"

0:16:140:16:15

I think we started off just doing covers and then

0:16:150:16:17

we just decided to write our own music

0:16:170:16:19

and it kind of just went from there.

0:16:190:16:21

Start your band with your friends, the people you know best.

0:16:260:16:30

Try to get a great balance of skills and abilities in your band.

0:16:300:16:35

Start with covers to practise then develop your own music.

0:16:350:16:38

And have loads of fun.

0:16:380:16:39

It's just two weeks before Chloe Hits The Stage

0:16:430:16:45

and she's in the studio with the band to rehearse her song.

0:16:450:16:49

I'll sing beside you because you need

0:16:490:16:50

to get those two wee lines right.

0:16:500:16:52

The song she's chosen to perform is the smash hit

0:16:520:16:55

"Beneath You're Beautiful" by Emeli Sande and Labrinth.

0:16:550:16:59

It's not an easy one to sing.

0:16:590:17:00

# Let me see beneath you're perfect

0:17:000:17:07

# Take it up now, boy, take it up. #

0:17:070:17:09

We'll try the chorus. There's just something not sound right

0:17:090:17:12

and let me take it off.

0:17:120:17:14

# But I'm going to try

0:17:150:17:19

# Let me... # Oh!

0:17:190:17:21

I'm going to crack up. Can't get it right.

0:17:210:17:24

I think Chloe's trying to sing this song in a key too high.

0:17:240:17:27

She can't reach the high notes so the band change the way

0:17:270:17:30

they play the song to see if it helps her voice.

0:17:300:17:32

# You tell all the boys no

0:17:430:17:46

# Makes you feel good, yeah. #

0:17:470:17:51

Finding the right key for your voice is the most important

0:17:550:17:58

thing for any new singer

0:17:580:18:00

and I think that new version suits Chloe's voice much better.

0:18:000:18:03

She now has two weeks to get it just right for the festival stage.

0:18:030:18:07

Now, I like to play the piano but Darrel is obsessed with it

0:18:160:18:19

and I think he needs to find out

0:18:190:18:21

if his dream of making a life out of music has any chance of succeeding.

0:18:210:18:25

Jenny is taking him to meet Neil Cowley, Neil is

0:18:270:18:30

City of Culture's musician in residence. He's a super

0:18:300:18:33

talented pianist and has played piano on some of the biggest

0:18:330:18:36

hits of this century working with people like Emeli Sande and Adele.

0:18:360:18:40

I've heard about you. I've heard all about you. The word is out in the

0:18:420:18:45

city at the minute, yeah. So it true to say you're classically trained?

0:18:450:18:49

-Yeah.

-Right and you're trying to make that transition...

0:18:490:18:52

There is no-one better for Darrel to work with to see

0:18:520:18:54

if he's got what it takes to make it as a full-time musician.

0:18:540:18:57

-I used to play Rolling In The Deep.

-Right.

0:18:570:19:00

-You played that one?

-I did play on that one.

0:19:000:19:02

I was watching on YouTube for...

0:19:020:19:03

Oh, did you watch that clip of me filming it in the studio?

0:19:030:19:05

-Go and do it.

-Huh?

-Go and do it.

-You want me to do it?

0:19:050:19:07

Yeah.

0:19:070:19:09

So, do you play that one?

0:19:090:19:10

No, I used to.

0:19:100:19:11

What do you mean you used to? Why don't

0:19:110:19:14

we re-learn Rolling in the Deep?

0:19:140:19:16

-Yeah.

-Yeah, is that a good idea?

-Yeah.

0:19:160:19:17

Cos I think that's what I played on it. Something like that.

0:19:170:19:20

Yeah, that is it.

0:19:200:19:21

I'm glad you're here to tell me.

0:19:210:19:23

I'm already liking your hand position. That's very good.

0:19:290:19:32

So you play that part, I'll play this part. Two, three and...

0:19:320:19:37

A flat major. If you can do that with the fourth finger

0:19:420:19:45

that would be perfect. Three and...

0:19:450:19:47

That's it. Perfect.

0:19:490:19:51

Well done. Yeah, you got it straight away

0:20:040:20:05

but what's amazing about you is your technique. You know you've

0:20:050:20:08

got that and you've got that over, 95% of people. You've got a classical

0:20:080:20:13

technique, you're very fluid, you jump from one end of the piano to

0:20:130:20:17

the other. No bother at all. You've got everything

0:20:170:20:19

within your grasp technically for you to do exactly what you want

0:20:190:20:24

for the rest of your life. I'm telling you, you really have,

0:20:240:20:27

you know, because it's just, it's all there it's all natural.

0:20:270:20:30

You know, it's been drilled into him or whatever it has,

0:20:300:20:32

but it's working beautifully so it's possible that the only area

0:20:320:20:36

that you need to think about developing is your ear.

0:20:360:20:40

If Neil is telling him that he's good,

0:20:400:20:42

then he really must have something special.

0:20:420:20:44

Neil is a great teacher, and I know that Darrell wants to

0:20:440:20:47

compose his own tunes so hopefully they can continue to work together.

0:20:470:20:51

Chloe's chance to sing solo has finally arrived.

0:20:550:20:58

She's at a family festival just outside Derry.

0:20:580:21:01

After three weeks of hard work she's finally got to grips with her

0:21:050:21:08

own unique version of the smash hit song "Beneath You're Beautiful" and

0:21:080:21:12

just before she Hits The Stage she's thinking of a very special person.

0:21:120:21:17

I think it's special that I'm at the festival

0:21:170:21:19

and it's my first festival. Unfortunately,

0:21:190:21:21

my mum can't be here with us but it's everything

0:21:210:21:24

I do musically is for her and I'm sure she's looking down and I can't

0:21:240:21:29

wait to just go on and make her proud so I'm very excited.

0:21:290:21:34

The gig is in full swing and Chloe's moment has come to

0:21:360:21:40

step into the spotlight. She has never sung on her

0:21:400:21:43

own in front of an audience before so best of luck, Chloe.

0:21:430:21:46

Hello, everybody!

0:21:500:21:52

# You let all the girls go

0:21:530:21:56

# Makes you feel good, don't it?

0:21:570:22:01

# Behind your Broadway show

0:22:020:22:06

# I heard a voice say, "Please, don't hurt me"

0:22:060:22:10

# You carried on so long

0:22:120:22:15

# You couldn't stop if you tried it

0:22:150:22:19

# Ohhhh hoo

0:22:200:22:22

# You've built your wall so high

0:22:220:22:25

# That no-one could climb it

0:22:250:22:28

# But I'm gonna try

0:22:290:22:31

# Would you let me see beneath you're beautiful?

0:22:320:22:37

# Would you let me see beneath you're perfect?

0:22:370:22:41

# Bring it up now, girl

0:22:410:22:43

# Bring it up now, girl

0:22:430:22:44

# I wanna see inside

0:22:440:22:47

# Would you let me see beneath you're beautiful tonight? #

0:22:470:22:53

Fantastic, Chloe. Well done!

0:23:030:23:05

That was absolutely amazing. That was just... It was unreal,

0:23:080:23:13

really didn't expected that big of a crowd. Oh, it was absolutely amazing.

0:23:130:23:17

I actually give all the credit to my mum, I think, cos she's just

0:23:170:23:22

kind of like my lucky charm. She's just always there. Hope she's

0:23:220:23:25

proud of me like so. I'm really proud of myself, as well.

0:23:250:23:28

MUSIC: "Glad You Came" by The Wanted

0:23:280:23:30

The biggest Irish music festival in the world has arrived in Derry

0:23:330:23:37

and tonight Conal will play on stage with the headline act,

0:23:370:23:40

Cara Dillon and her band.

0:23:400:23:42

Grandad Tommy is being supportive, as always.

0:23:470:23:50

Is that a Cara Dillon hair cut you've got, hey?

0:23:500:23:52

What kind of hair cut is that?

0:23:550:23:57

But Conal can give as good as he gets.

0:23:570:23:59

You don't even have hair to cut.

0:23:590:24:01

This is the first time Conal will ever have played on a big stage

0:24:040:24:08

and Tommy is keen to stress just how much it means.

0:24:080:24:11

-This is the biggest event in the...

-The Fleadh.

0:24:110:24:13

Fleadh Cheoil calendar do you know what I mean?

0:24:130:24:17

This is the headline event.

0:24:170:24:18

You have been fortunate enough to be part of it. It must blow you away.

0:24:180:24:23

It does, it just, I don't believe it.

0:24:230:24:26

As the venue starts to fill up for tonight's sold out concert,

0:24:310:24:34

Conal heads backstage to prepare for his performance which will

0:24:340:24:38

include playing with the band and a small solo.

0:24:380:24:41

As Cara Dillon and her band get under way Conal is trying to

0:24:470:24:50

overcome a problem.

0:24:500:24:52

If there's a bit of an issue too warm so your hands get sweaty

0:24:520:24:56

and your fingers start slipping when you're playing, so hope that

0:24:560:25:01

just doesn't happen.

0:25:010:25:03

Oh, no the heat from all the lights

0:25:030:25:05

and the huge audience is making things uncomfortably warm but

0:25:050:25:09

like a true professional, Conal will just have to get on with the show.

0:25:090:25:12

This is it. We're ready to go.

0:25:120:25:14

We've got a very special guest here tonight. Um, he's a young lad

0:25:150:25:19

and he's a only 14. Do you want to come on out here, Conal, come on!

0:25:190:25:24

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:25:270:25:28

This is it.

0:25:340:25:36

Wow! He's brought the house down. What a performance

0:26:450:26:48

and not a slip in sight.

0:26:480:26:49

Oh, it was brilliant, class.

0:26:560:26:59

My God. Never done something like that before, amazing.

0:27:000:27:03

-Excellent.

-Thanks.

-Did really well.

0:27:030:27:06

I think he was fantastic. It was really brilliant

0:27:070:27:10

and for a young local lad to come out and do that is just

0:27:100:27:14

so brilliant, I couldn't have done that when I was 14.

0:27:140:27:16

Congratulations.

0:27:160:27:17

Good job, big dog.

0:27:170:27:19

I could get used to this.

0:27:210:27:23

Give us a hug, give us a hug. Brilliant, brilliant.

0:27:250:27:29

and I love that I love that when you got up there

0:27:290:27:31

and you went diddly, diddly, diddly.

0:27:310:27:33

In the final episode of Hit The Stage I meet Brianna,

0:27:410:27:44

who's taking on the harp.

0:27:440:27:45

Darrell struggles with nerves before his gig.

0:27:490:27:52

I'm really nervous.

0:27:520:27:53

The group finally record their cover of Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars"

0:27:530:27:58

and it's time to say goodbye.

0:27:580:27:59

-This is the end now.

-Is that it?

-Aw!
