Hi, I'm Katy B and this is Hit The Stage | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
and I'm going to be taking a group of budding musicians and | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
giving them the chance to perform on the biggest stages we can find. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
Budding DJ's go from playing their | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
mum and dad's parties to rocking the decks at major festivals. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
Singers from singing hymns in church to performing to sell-out crowds. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:27
And song writers from sharing their songs with no-one to playing | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
to an audience of thousands. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
Are you ready to Hit The Stage! We are! | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
CHEERING | 0:00:36 | 0:00:37
MUSIC: "Lights On" by Katy B | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
# I keep on moving with the lights on... # | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
I've been lucky enough to make a life out of doing something | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
that I love, singing and performing. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
# So you won't scare me with the lights on. # | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
You may even know some of my hit singles. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
And now I'm in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
Why am I here? Well, it's simple. This year the city is the UK's | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
first ever City Of Culture which means there's loads of massive | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
music events happening all year round. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
And I'm going to help some local kids to Hit The Stage. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
I won't be doing it alone, I've got two local musicians to help me | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
out when I'm not around. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
Glenn, who loves hitting the stage himself | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
when he's rocking out with his band. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
The spark of creativity that they have really reignites | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
the spark that you have so I'm really forward to the 8 months, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
and seeing where this is going to go. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
And Jenny who likes to take things a bit more slowly | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
when she's teaching students how to play the harp or sing. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
It's really inspiring to think that these kids really have | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
so much potential so I'm really, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
really excited to see what they're going to come up with. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
Last time we saw two of our group Hit The Stage in style. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
Eibhin singing in front of thousands at a City of Culture concert, | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
and Hannah going on tour to Leeds | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
and playing her brand new song in front of a great crowd. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
Starting her Hit The Stage adventure today | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
is 12-year-old Chloe. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
Chloe loves to sing but up until this year | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
she has struggled to turn her passion for music into reality. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
City Of Culture is all about giving musical opportunity to anyone | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
who wants it and Chloe has grabbed the opportunity with both hands. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:30
She's part of the City Youth Choir that has been performing | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
at major City Of Culture events all year. And she's loving it. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
It was amazing I would do it any day. I loved it. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
# Valerie | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
# Valerie. # | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
But Chloe has a very special reason for wanting to get up and sing. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
My mother played the violin, she sang. She was very musical like. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
But she passed away in June. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
MUSIC: "If You Could See Me Now" by The Script | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
And she inspires me | 0:02:58 | 0:02:59
on an off day to turn out like her in terms of education and stuff. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
I can see why singing is so important for her | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
and I love the fact she's getting involved in the City of Culture | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
choir and I think the time is right for this girl to find her own voice. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
MUSIC: "You Bring Me Joy" by Amelia Lily | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
# I've been thinking bout all the things... | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
And as a first step on the road to singing solo I've | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
organised for her to meet one of her musical heroes, Amelia Lily. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:25
I'm trying to figure out what to wear. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
I don't want to look too dressy and I don't | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
want to look too causal so... Never thought in a million years I'd | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
ever meet Amelia Lily, ever, even when I was watching X Factor. Nope. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
# Oh, you bring me joy | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
# Yeah, you bring me sadness | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
# So you bring the love | 0:03:41 | 0:03:42
# So forget all the madness | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
# I'm done with all the pain | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
# I'm done with all the happenings | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
# So you bring me joy... # | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
Hello, Chloe. How are you? | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
Nice to meet you. I'm Amelia. I've heard you're a big fan of me. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
-Yeah. -I like your jumper. -Thank you. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
-I like your jeans as well, you've got style. -Thank you. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
Sit down and talk to me, yeah. So I've come to see you today to give | 0:04:02 | 0:04:07
you a boost. This is, like, one tip I'll tell you | 0:04:07 | 0:04:11
and never ever give up on whatever you want to do. Whether you | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
want to be a singer, whether you want to play the violin whether | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
you want to be a doctor, whatever you want to do in life, don't | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
let anybody tell you tell what to do and if you want to do it you stick | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
at it, cos one day, you know, you could be sat where I am. So give | 0:04:22 | 0:04:26
me a cuddle and I'll hope that this little chat's helped you, yeah? | 0:04:26 | 0:04:30
Yeah. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:31 | |
With that advice to set her on her way I'll have a | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
think about how Chloe can fulfil her dreams of singing solo. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
Last time I told 14-year-old fiddle player Conal that he's going | 0:04:39 | 0:04:43
to be centre stage at the world's largest Irish Music Festival, | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
the All-Ireland Fleadh. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
Up till now, he's only ever played small events around the city, | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
or at home to his dog. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:56
That dog's dancing. | 0:04:57 | 0:04:58
But in just three weeks he'll be playing on the main | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
stage of the festival with the headline act, singer Cara Dillon | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
and her band. It's a big step up for him and if he's going to be ready | 0:05:04 | 0:05:08
in time there's plenty of practice to be done. But what's this? | 0:05:08 | 0:05:13
It looks like Conal is going somewhere. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
I'm packing, going to the caravan. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
Going to do a bit of fishing, bit of surfing and stuff. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
A holiday to grandad's caravan before your big gig? | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
But what about all your practise? | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
Well that's a relief. Looks like he's packing his fiddle too. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
The tune Conal has to learn is much faster than anything he's | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
ever done before. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:40
You worry about this new tune Conal? | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
Well, it's just doing the standard and the speed of it. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
The speed of it. The best way to learn a tune is to | 0:05:49 | 0:05:51
whistle it. And whistle it at the speed that it's played. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:55
So that will | 0:05:55 | 0:05:56
give your wee brain a notion that here I have to play this | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
at a certain speed. Would you rather be playing tunes or washing dishes? | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
-Playing tunes. -Would you? | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
That's good advice from grandad Tommy, whistle it. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:09
But Conal knows best | 0:06:09 | 0:06:10
and he's decided to listen to it on his tablet instead. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
It looks like | 0:06:14 | 0:06:16
a great day to get into the water but if you want to succeed in music | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
sometimes you have to sacrifice the things you'd rather be doing. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
So I'm delighted Conal is choosing to focus on his practise instead. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
I have to learn it on me own, | 0:06:26 | 0:06:27
I have to learn it without the sheet music and stuff like that. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:31
I have to learn it by ear so I'll have another listen to it now. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:35
Like a lot of Irish traditional tunes there's no music | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
written down so Conal will have to rely on his ear. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
It's going to be a tough couple of weeks for him | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
but I know he can do it! | 0:06:47 | 0:06:49
But right now it's 14-year-old Darrell's turn to start his | 0:06:49 | 0:06:52
Hit The Stage journey. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:53
Darrell loves playing piano and has dreams of making it big. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
I'd love to become a famous composer, go around the world. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:08
He spends at least two hours a day practising on the old family piano | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
under the stairs, and loves nothing more than composing his own tunes. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
Music's so important to me cos it's in me blood. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
But, it's not a love shared by his 10 year old brother Tyrese. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:27
Hey, missed me... | 0:07:29 | 0:07:30
And it can be tough to fit practise in | 0:07:30 | 0:07:32
when all your younger brother wants to do is wrestle. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:34
Go to your room now. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:35
Mum Sharon encourages his piano practise as much as she can but she | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
thinks that he could be putting just as much effort into his homework. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:45
But I keep telling me you need to study as well | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
and that's something he's not doing. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
I prefer to play piano instead of school work and homework | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
and go for music. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:55
Darrell I would think is very obsessed with the piano you know | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
because when it comes to his school work even | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
when I go to interviews with the teachers they're actually saying | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
he's day dreaming in class, | 0:08:04 | 0:08:05
and you don't realise it's me trying to... | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
But you're saying, "Oh, you know you don't revise," and all this.. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
-But you don't... -But I'm starting to, you can't see that? | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
You've this weird idea that you can go into your exam | 0:08:13 | 0:08:15
and pass it without studying. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:17
I don't have it. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:18
-So what are you going to do about it? -Work harder. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
Hmm. I dunno, he doesn't sound that interested to me. I think | 0:08:22 | 0:08:26
I'd better go round and have a chat. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
-So would you play me something? -Yeah. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
Do you ever, do you ever write them? | 0:08:40 | 0:08:42
Um, I've wrote a couple of songs now, but they're | 0:08:42 | 0:08:46
not too good, they're just a couple of melodies like all this. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:50
Darrell told me that this | 0:08:52 | 0:08:53
old piano has been in the family for generations. He loves | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
playing it even if it is getting harder to tune in its old age. | 0:08:56 | 0:09:00
-It's kind of... -It's lovely. -I got this... | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
What you talking about "They're not too good," that's amazing. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
Darrel's own compositions sound great. It's obvious he puts | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
the work in but mum Sharon wants to talk about the work he's not doing. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:26
See my homework, say in form class, | 0:09:26 | 0:09:30
if I don't have it done I just do it in form class. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
-That's the first I've heard of that. -Oh, really? -Uh-huh. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:35
-Well that's true. -Keeping more track now on homework. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:39
But you see with your music | 0:09:39 | 0:09:40
and stuff you would have needed to study as well? Yes? | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
I failed maths. I had to go back to college when I was in 6th form, | 0:09:43 | 0:09:48
to go and do every evening to go and do my math classes. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
Right. OK. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:52
Do you hear that, Darrell? | 0:09:52 | 0:09:53
Because Darrell has this love for music | 0:09:53 | 0:09:55
and that he wants to go professional and everything | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
but that's what I'm trying to get through to him. You need to | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
-study as well. If he doesn't get his maths I'm going with him. -Ahh. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
And we're going to night class together which I think... | 0:10:04 | 0:10:06
Well, that's what my mum did. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
Is that right did she go with you? | 0:10:08 | 0:10:10
She used to give me a lift. Yeah. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:11
So we'll do your maths together. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:15
If doing maths classes | 0:10:15 | 0:10:16
with your mum isn't enough to get you studying, | 0:10:16 | 0:10:18
I don't know what is. I'll be keeping an eye on Darrel. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
Chloe has had a tough year | 0:10:27 | 0:10:28
and I know she dreams of making her mum proud by singing live on | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
stage so I've sent Jenny to let her know that she's going to be stepping | 0:10:31 | 0:10:35
out from her choir and singing solo at a festival with a local band. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:39
-Oh, my God. -5,000 people at the festival, so the band | 0:10:39 | 0:10:43
that are going to be playing with you they're a really, they're a | 0:10:43 | 0:10:46
-massive band, there's loads of them on stage. -That's amazing isn't it? | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
Oh, my God. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
I'm giving Chloe the opportunity to sing any song | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
she wants at a City of Culture festival with one of Derry's | 0:10:55 | 0:10:58
best live bands, Paddy Nash and The Happy Enchiladas. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:02
I know just how hard it can be to step on stage and sing in front | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
of a crowd, especially if you've never done it before. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
It's all about confidence | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
so I've got something a bit different in store for Chloe. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
A workshop with Nicky Harley from Derry's circus school, that | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
should give her a great boost so she can Hit The Stage with confidence! | 0:11:20 | 0:11:24
I'm relying on you to give me confidence. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
OK. Well if you can do some of the things | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
we do today you'll be able to do anything. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:32
Chloe is learning to be a clown. | 0:11:32 | 0:11:34
Clowning is all about focus, like any performance. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:38
All right go! | 0:11:38 | 0:11:39
THEY LAUGH | 0:11:43 | 0:11:44
SHE SCREAMS | 0:11:46 | 0:11:47
Being a clown is not as easy as you might think! | 0:11:49 | 0:11:52
A clown never gives up. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
That's great advice. Never give up, Chloe! | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
# "Um, ah", went the little green frog one day | 0:11:58 | 0:12:00
# "Um, ah", went the little green frog. # | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
Street theatre looks like a lot of fun and it's great to | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
see Chloe just letting herself go but it's not called street theatre | 0:12:11 | 0:12:15
for nothing. It's time to take her new skills and hit the street. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
This is super scary. If Chloe can do this | 0:12:23 | 0:12:25
I reckon singing at a festival will be a breeze. | 0:12:25 | 0:12:28
You've got an audience here. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
Go for it, Chloe! | 0:12:30 | 0:12:31
# "Um, ah", went the little green frog one day | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
# "Um, ah", went the little green frog | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
# "Um, ah", went the little green frog one day | 0:12:37 | 0:12:41
# And the frog went, "Um, um, ahhh." # | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
That took some bottle | 0:12:45 | 0:12:46
but I hope Chloe won't have to sing Little Green Frog at the festival. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
I think I've more confidence now cos it doesn't matter what people think, | 0:12:49 | 0:12:53
it's just, you're doing it, and at least you have the guts to do it. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
Along with their own musical journeys our Hit The Stage | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
gang are also playing together as a City of Culture supergroup. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:07
They're recording their very own cover version of Snow Patrol's | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
hit song Chasing Cars and making a music video to go with it. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:16
Conal! | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
We've only got one more set of practice to go | 0:13:19 | 0:13:21
through before we go into the studio because the last thing | 0:13:21 | 0:13:24
we can do is go into the studio and start wasting time. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
All right? | 0:13:27 | 0:13:28
Let's take it from that chorus so it's after two... | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
# If I lay... # Right? | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
# If I just lay here | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
# Would you lie with me and just forget... # | 0:13:38 | 0:13:42
Hmm, I dunno it's all sounding a bit flat. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:45
So does anyone have any questions, or any ideas? | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
Anything that they want to bring forward, cos now's a good time. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
Can we make the song a little bit faster a little tiny bit faster? | 0:13:51 | 0:13:54
-Aye, because that's... -That's too slow. | 0:13:54 | 0:13:57
-Yeah. -Like this. | 0:13:57 | 0:13:58
That's a great suggestion from Hit The Stage drummer Jason. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:05
..three, four. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:06
# I don't quite know | 0:14:08 | 0:14:12
# How to say... # | 0:14:12 | 0:14:14
Yeah, that's starting to sound much better. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:16
That tempo change and that stop, perfect ideas. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
There still is a lot of individual practise they all need to do, | 0:14:22 | 0:14:24
it's still a bit ropey. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:26
Every time we do it it changes it slightly | 0:14:26 | 0:14:28
and that's not good enough, you know, most of them | 0:14:28 | 0:14:31
haven't been in a recording studio before so that will throw | 0:14:31 | 0:14:34
them a bit. So there is a lot of work | 0:14:34 | 0:14:35
that needs to be done before then. | 0:14:35 | 0:14:37
One, two, three, four. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:40
# Through it all... # | 0:14:41 | 0:14:44
'I love the intro like the harp and the violin how it just' | 0:14:44 | 0:14:48
comes in so softly and then it builds up and you got that | 0:14:48 | 0:14:51
amazing beat coming in, it's really like, gets you really pumped. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
Two, three, four. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:56
I've seen so much progression, like, just today, like, it's | 0:15:04 | 0:15:08
really starting to come together now, so it is. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:10
That's pretty good. | 0:15:13 | 0:15:15
If you've ever thought of forming a band with your mates, here's | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
some top tips. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
I think when you're forming a band you know, it's important that | 0:15:23 | 0:15:26
you have a mixture of you know different characters. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:28
It's good that you've got good chemistry. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:30
You've got to be friends. You know, everyone's got to get on well. | 0:15:30 | 0:15:33
I think that's very important that you get on as friends. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:35
Obviously you need to be good at your individual instrument, as well. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:39
Hopefully you bring, sort of, different | 0:15:43 | 0:15:45
skills to the table. You know, whether maybe someone's more | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
technically sort of gifted and | 0:15:48 | 0:15:50
maybe someone else is | 0:15:50 | 0:15:52
better at the business side of it, | 0:15:52 | 0:15:53
there's so much you need | 0:15:53 | 0:15:54
these days as a musician or | 0:15:54 | 0:15:56
a producer, to be successful. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:58
It really helps working in a team. | 0:15:58 | 0:16:00
I had been in different bands with different friends. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
And Alex had been in different bands | 0:16:05 | 0:16:07
with different friends and we just | 0:16:07 | 0:16:08
kind of all three of us play guitar, | 0:16:08 | 0:16:10
we like the same music and we just kind of said, "Do you want to get in | 0:16:10 | 0:16:14
"a garage and just play?" | 0:16:14 | 0:16:15
I think we started off just doing covers and then | 0:16:15 | 0:16:17
we just decided to write our own music | 0:16:17 | 0:16:19
and it kind of just went from there. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:21
Start your band with your friends, the people you know best. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:30
Try to get a great balance of skills and abilities in your band. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:35
Start with covers to practise then develop your own music. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
And have loads of fun. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:39
It's just two weeks before Chloe Hits The Stage | 0:16:43 | 0:16:45
and she's in the studio with the band to rehearse her song. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:49
I'll sing beside you because you need | 0:16:49 | 0:16:50
to get those two wee lines right. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:52
The song she's chosen to perform is the smash hit | 0:16:52 | 0:16:55
"Beneath You're Beautiful" by Emeli Sande and Labrinth. | 0:16:55 | 0:16:59
It's not an easy one to sing. | 0:16:59 | 0:17:00
# Let me see beneath you're perfect | 0:17:00 | 0:17:07
# Take it up now, boy, take it up. # | 0:17:07 | 0:17:09
We'll try the chorus. There's just something not sound right | 0:17:09 | 0:17:12
and let me take it off. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:14
# But I'm going to try | 0:17:15 | 0:17:19
# Let me... # Oh! | 0:17:19 | 0:17:21
I'm going to crack up. Can't get it right. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
I think Chloe's trying to sing this song in a key too high. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
She can't reach the high notes so the band change the way | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
they play the song to see if it helps her voice. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:32
# You tell all the boys no | 0:17:43 | 0:17:46
# Makes you feel good, yeah. # | 0:17:47 | 0:17:51
Finding the right key for your voice is the most important | 0:17:55 | 0:17:58
thing for any new singer | 0:17:58 | 0:18:00
and I think that new version suits Chloe's voice much better. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
She now has two weeks to get it just right for the festival stage. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:07
Now, I like to play the piano but Darrel is obsessed with it | 0:18:16 | 0:18:19
and I think he needs to find out | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
if his dream of making a life out of music has any chance of succeeding. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:25
Jenny is taking him to meet Neil Cowley, Neil is | 0:18:27 | 0:18:30
City of Culture's musician in residence. He's a super | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
talented pianist and has played piano on some of the biggest | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
hits of this century working with people like Emeli Sande and Adele. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:40
I've heard about you. I've heard all about you. The word is out in the | 0:18:42 | 0:18:45
city at the minute, yeah. So it true to say you're classically trained? | 0:18:45 | 0:18:49
-Yeah. -Right and you're trying to make that transition... | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
There is no-one better for Darrel to work with to see | 0:18:52 | 0:18:54
if he's got what it takes to make it as a full-time musician. | 0:18:54 | 0:18:57
-I used to play Rolling In The Deep. -Right. | 0:18:57 | 0:19:00
-You played that one? -I did play on that one. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
I was watching on YouTube for... | 0:19:02 | 0:19:03
Oh, did you watch that clip of me filming it in the studio? | 0:19:03 | 0:19:05
-Go and do it. -Huh? -Go and do it. -You want me to do it? | 0:19:05 | 0:19:07
Yeah. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:09 | |
So, do you play that one? | 0:19:09 | 0:19:10
No, I used to. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:11
What do you mean you used to? Why don't | 0:19:11 | 0:19:14
we re-learn Rolling in the Deep? | 0:19:14 | 0:19:16
-Yeah. -Yeah, is that a good idea? -Yeah. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:17
Cos I think that's what I played on it. Something like that. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:20
Yeah, that is it. | 0:19:20 | 0:19:21
I'm glad you're here to tell me. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:23
I'm already liking your hand position. That's very good. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:32
So you play that part, I'll play this part. Two, three and... | 0:19:32 | 0:19:37
A flat major. If you can do that with the fourth finger | 0:19:42 | 0:19:45
that would be perfect. Three and... | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
That's it. Perfect. | 0:19:49 | 0:19:51
Well done. Yeah, you got it straight away | 0:20:04 | 0:20:05
but what's amazing about you is your technique. You know you've | 0:20:05 | 0:20:08
got that and you've got that over, 95% of people. You've got a classical | 0:20:08 | 0:20:13
technique, you're very fluid, you jump from one end of the piano to | 0:20:13 | 0:20:17
the other. No bother at all. You've got everything | 0:20:17 | 0:20:19
within your grasp technically for you to do exactly what you want | 0:20:19 | 0:20:24
for the rest of your life. I'm telling you, you really have, | 0:20:24 | 0:20:27
you know, because it's just, it's all there it's all natural. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:30
You know, it's been drilled into him or whatever it has, | 0:20:30 | 0:20:32
but it's working beautifully so it's possible that the only area | 0:20:32 | 0:20:36
that you need to think about developing is your ear. | 0:20:36 | 0:20:40
If Neil is telling him that he's good, | 0:20:40 | 0:20:42
then he really must have something special. | 0:20:42 | 0:20:44
Neil is a great teacher, and I know that Darrell wants to | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
compose his own tunes so hopefully they can continue to work together. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:51
Chloe's chance to sing solo has finally arrived. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
She's at a family festival just outside Derry. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:01
After three weeks of hard work she's finally got to grips with her | 0:21:05 | 0:21:08
own unique version of the smash hit song "Beneath You're Beautiful" and | 0:21:08 | 0:21:12
just before she Hits The Stage she's thinking of a very special person. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:17
I think it's special that I'm at the festival | 0:21:17 | 0:21:19
and it's my first festival. Unfortunately, | 0:21:19 | 0:21:21
my mum can't be here with us but it's everything | 0:21:21 | 0:21:24
I do musically is for her and I'm sure she's looking down and I can't | 0:21:24 | 0:21:29
wait to just go on and make her proud so I'm very excited. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:34
The gig is in full swing and Chloe's moment has come to | 0:21:36 | 0:21:40
step into the spotlight. She has never sung on her | 0:21:40 | 0:21:43
own in front of an audience before so best of luck, Chloe. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
Hello, everybody! | 0:21:50 | 0:21:52
# You let all the girls go | 0:21:53 | 0:21:56
# Makes you feel good, don't it? | 0:21:57 | 0:22:01
# Behind your Broadway show | 0:22:02 | 0:22:06
# I heard a voice say, "Please, don't hurt me" | 0:22:06 | 0:22:10
# You carried on so long | 0:22:12 | 0:22:15
# You couldn't stop if you tried it | 0:22:15 | 0:22:19
# Ohhhh hoo | 0:22:20 | 0:22:22
# You've built your wall so high | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
# That no-one could climb it | 0:22:25 | 0:22:28
# But I'm gonna try | 0:22:29 | 0:22:31
# Would you let me see beneath you're beautiful? | 0:22:32 | 0:22:37
# Would you let me see beneath you're perfect? | 0:22:37 | 0:22:41
# Bring it up now, girl | 0:22:41 | 0:22:43
# Bring it up now, girl | 0:22:43 | 0:22:44
# I wanna see inside | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
# Would you let me see beneath you're beautiful tonight? # | 0:22:47 | 0:22:53
Fantastic, Chloe. Well done! | 0:23:03 | 0:23:05
That was absolutely amazing. That was just... It was unreal, | 0:23:08 | 0:23:13
really didn't expected that big of a crowd. Oh, it was absolutely amazing. | 0:23:13 | 0:23:17
I actually give all the credit to my mum, I think, cos she's just | 0:23:17 | 0:23:22
kind of like my lucky charm. She's just always there. Hope she's | 0:23:22 | 0:23:25
proud of me like so. I'm really proud of myself, as well. | 0:23:25 | 0:23:28
MUSIC: "Glad You Came" by The Wanted | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
The biggest Irish music festival in the world has arrived in Derry | 0:23:33 | 0:23:37
and tonight Conal will play on stage with the headline act, | 0:23:37 | 0:23:40
Cara Dillon and her band. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:42
Grandad Tommy is being supportive, as always. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:50
Is that a Cara Dillon hair cut you've got, hey? | 0:23:50 | 0:23:52
What kind of hair cut is that? | 0:23:55 | 0:23:57
But Conal can give as good as he gets. | 0:23:57 | 0:23:59
You don't even have hair to cut. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:01
This is the first time Conal will ever have played on a big stage | 0:24:04 | 0:24:08
and Tommy is keen to stress just how much it means. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
-This is the biggest event in the... -The Fleadh. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:13
Fleadh Cheoil calendar do you know what I mean? | 0:24:13 | 0:24:17
This is the headline event. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:18
You have been fortunate enough to be part of it. It must blow you away. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:23
It does, it just, I don't believe it. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:26
As the venue starts to fill up for tonight's sold out concert, | 0:24:31 | 0:24:34
Conal heads backstage to prepare for his performance which will | 0:24:34 | 0:24:38
include playing with the band and a small solo. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:41
As Cara Dillon and her band get under way Conal is trying to | 0:24:47 | 0:24:50
overcome a problem. | 0:24:50 | 0:24:52
If there's a bit of an issue too warm so your hands get sweaty | 0:24:52 | 0:24:56
and your fingers start slipping when you're playing, so hope that | 0:24:56 | 0:25:01
just doesn't happen. | 0:25:01 | 0:25:03
Oh, no the heat from all the lights | 0:25:03 | 0:25:05
and the huge audience is making things uncomfortably warm but | 0:25:05 | 0:25:09
like a true professional, Conal will just have to get on with the show. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
This is it. We're ready to go. | 0:25:12 | 0:25:14
We've got a very special guest here tonight. Um, he's a young lad | 0:25:15 | 0:25:19
and he's a only 14. Do you want to come on out here, Conal, come on! | 0:25:19 | 0:25:24
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:25:27 | 0:25:28
This is it. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:36
Wow! He's brought the house down. What a performance | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
and not a slip in sight. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:49
Oh, it was brilliant, class. | 0:26:56 | 0:26:59
My God. Never done something like that before, amazing. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:03
-Excellent. -Thanks. -Did really well. | 0:27:03 | 0:27:06
I think he was fantastic. It was really brilliant | 0:27:07 | 0:27:10
and for a young local lad to come out and do that is just | 0:27:10 | 0:27:14
so brilliant, I couldn't have done that when I was 14. | 0:27:14 | 0:27:16
Congratulations. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:17
Good job, big dog. | 0:27:17 | 0:27:19
I could get used to this. | 0:27:21 | 0:27:23
Give us a hug, give us a hug. Brilliant, brilliant. | 0:27:25 | 0:27:29
and I love that I love that when you got up there | 0:27:29 | 0:27:31
and you went diddly, diddly, diddly. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:33
In the final episode of Hit The Stage I meet Brianna, | 0:27:41 | 0:27:44
who's taking on the harp. | 0:27:44 | 0:27:45
Darrell struggles with nerves before his gig. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:52
I'm really nervous. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:53
The group finally record their cover of Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" | 0:27:53 | 0:27:58
and it's time to say goodbye. | 0:27:58 | 0:27:59
-This is the end now. -Is that it? -Aw! | 0:27:59 | 0:28:02
