This is Priya and she is three years old.

Good morning, Priya. It's time to wake up.

We've got to brush our teeth.

Today is a big day for Priya,

she's starting nursery,

but that's not all.

Today, Priya is going to do something else for the first time,

but what will it be?

This is Priya's memory box - it helps her remember

the exciting things that've happened.

Priya's brushing Dad's hair to make it look smart for the day.

Daddy's hair's quite long, isn't it? I think I need to get mine cut.

-Yeah.

-And yours is quite long, too. I think we should get yours

cut ready for nursery, so you look all pretty going to nursery. Yeah?

Your first ever haircut, ready for your first ever day at nursery.

Our hair grows all the time and needs to be cut.

People have all different types and colours of hair,

from straight to wavy, curly to spiky.

We look after our hair by washing it regularly and cutting it.

I wonder what Priya's hair will look like.

Before they go to the hairdresser's,

Priya and her dad are trying out different hairstyles.

They've got lots of wigs to try on.

Do you know how I'm going to get my hair cut?

The first thing to go into Priya's memory box is a purple wig.

Priya is a little nervous about getting her hair cut later.

First, Dad has brought her to his barber's, so she can see

there's nothing to worry about.

-Hiya, mate. I'm here for a haircut.

-Hiya, mate, yeah.

-It's Taz.

Taz, yeah, no problem. If you'd like to come with me.

We'll squeeze you in in a bit.

You take your seat here, look.

And you can watch Daddy get his hair cut, OK?

CLIPPERS BUZZING

Those clippers make a strange sound.

Priya, see what he's doing? He's using the shaver to make the sides

really short and then he's going to cut the top bit with scissors.

Priya, look at me. I'm cutting Daddy's hair with the scissors.

Doesn't hurt. And when I cut Daddy's hair off,

he comes back again in three weeks' time and he'll have another haircut.

His hair will grow back, see?

Daddy, look!

-What's that?

-Hair.

-Some of my hair?

-Yeah.

The second thing to go into the memory box is a pair of scissors.

Before Priya gets her hair cut,

Dad wants to get her a few things that she'll need for nursery.

OK, Priya, we need to go and get a pencil case and a hairband

-ready for school. OK?

-So let's go. I'll grab the basket.

-You go that way and I'll follow you.

OK, Priya, you're going to be starting nursery soon,

so you need to pick a hairband.

The third thing to go into the memory box is a hairband.

Now Dad has had his hair cut, it's Priya's turn.

-Good morning, Priya. Are you Priya? Have you come for big girl hair?

-No.

Yes, you have, Priya. Remember, there's no need to be worried.

This lady over here, Natalie, is going to be doing your hair

this morning for you. Would you like to go and see her?

Priya has come to a special hairdresser's just for kids.

There are lots of fun things for her to do while she gets her hair cut.

Ready? Pop your head back for me. You comfy there?

And is that water OK? Yeah? It's not too hot? Good.

And we're going to wash your hair and it will smell nice,

and it will be nice and clean, ready to have your hair cut then.

-OK?

-Do you like having your hair washed?

-Yeah.

Now your hair is clean, what's next?

There you go. I'm just going to dry your hair now.

Dad will sit next to you while you have your hair trimmed, OK?

It's OK, Priya. You'll be fine.

OK, Priya, so we're going to give your hair a little trim,

but we'll only take a little bit off, OK. So, you don't need

to be nervous. There we go, brushed it all through nice,

so we've got no knots, no tangles. Just going to take those ends off.

OK? And you don't need to worry cos it'll grow back.

So what I need you to do, can you pop you head down

-just a little bit for me?

-That's it.

-Perfect, well done.

-Dad, I can't see you.

-Right there, Dad?

-Yeah, I'm right next to you.

-I can't see you.

-Shall we keep a lock of your hair for your first haircut, Priya?

-Yeah.

and then you can get the plait you wanted in it.

Say hiya. It's your big day of nursery today. Your first day.
